Thats as long as its going to take to get the trough to the east of us to move on out and get back to our normal pattern. So from 11 00 tonight through 11 00 thursday morning, we have a fire weather watch for the hills of the north bay interior mountains. All these highlighted areas. Well see wind gusts from 30 to 40 miles an hour for the morning hours, 50s and 60s out there with gray sky. Well be back into hazy sunshine upper 60s downtown to mid 70s in san jose. If you stepped outside before you went to bed, you probably smelled and saw the haze of wildfire smoke that settled on top of the bay area. Its coming from all the way north almost to the oregon border and then filtering down here from the peninsula to the city. It was hard to see because of all that haze. Its become an almost annual occurrence during wildfire season here on the west coast. And it brings Serious Health and respiratory concerns with it. I checked the air quality tracker. Its showing an unhealthy level here in palo alto, where we are this morning. And i can smell the smoke. I know in San Mateo County this morning as well. I could also smell the smoke. So really throughout the bay area, were feeling the impacts. Theres been an air quality advisory that has been issued because of the smoke from the wildfires in Northern California and oregon. And we have some footage that we want to show you from yesterday. There was so much smoke in the bay area that you could hardly see the bay bridge and the smoke was so thick from the port of oakland that it was hard to see the San Francisco skyline. People were all around the bay area, were seeing and smelling the smoke in the east bay. Some high schools canceled, sports practice because of the bad air quality at coal hardware in north beach. People were stopping by and buying face masks. Ive had a couple come in, but i expect far more to come in shortly because its just been times when its just, you know, if youve ever smoked, its kind of like that truly bad. I mean, usually you can see east bay very smoky. It smells like a campfire. I started to feel it in my throat and now i have my mask on and air quality experts say we could expect to see impacts for the next couple of days. So if it is possible, they say its a good idea to stay indoors today. Keep your doors closed and your windows, your windows closed as well. Pgandes says it may now need to shut off some power to some homes this week to reduce the risk of wildfires. Security and safety was improved around San Franciscos Moscone Center during the Salesforce Dreamforce conference. Abc7 spoke with the mayor to discuss the challenges of making that change permanent. This is trying to get people into help. Mayor london breed says one major obstacle the city is facing is a federal injunction that puts restrictions on clearing homeless encampments. The unhoused crisis in the east bay is prompting Alameda County to declare a state of emergency on homelessness. This order was unanimously approved by the board of supervisors yesterday. It directs county staff at the office of homeless care and coordination to come up with a Response Plan in 60 days with specific steps to be taken to address the crisis. The number of unhoused people in Alameda County went up by 73 in the last five years. Second chance in newark runs a recovery shelter and they say a state of emergency is long overdue. I think were at the starting point of it with the state of emergency, but it will take a while for it to trickle down. Somebodys waiting on their next meal. Cant wait on red tape to eat. Declaring a state of emergency. Also sets the stage for the possibility of additional state and federal funding. In sacramento, the countys District Attorney is now suing the city for their alleged inaction on the issue of homelessness in the last seven years. Our unhoused population in sacramento has exploded. To over 250. We have more Homeless People in sacramento than in San Francisco. The da says he is suing the city of sacramento for not cleaning up homeless encampments and instead letting the issue escalate. The lawsuit also claims the situation has created a Public Safety crisis. The da has a list of demands, including more shelters and a ban on daytime camping. Sacramento mayor says the da lacks a basic understanding of the situation. And if the capital city is limited finances. Now to the war in ukraine. Many republican lawmakers on capitol hill are calling for the us to cut funding for ukraine as a Government Shutdown looms. We have an inversion with the smoke there, 58 in San Francisco, 62 in oakland, 60 in san jose. We also have the low clouds, the fog, and we will be looking at our air quality advisory lasting through thursday. Sfo right now 57 santa rosa, it is 59 in novato and concord. And as we look at our fire danger index, it goes up late tonight as we get into a stronger north wind. So this is 4 00 and youll notice the greens have turned blue, which is moderate for a fire danger index. That means that we could see some fires start and in fact it gets even drier as we get into your early thursday morning due to the low relative humidity dropping below 25 due to the system. Those strong north winds, the downsloping winds, and its the system thats going to take us through late thursday. And then once this moves out of here, then well see a return to some better air quality. Heres a look at the winds up in the north here. You can expect winds anywhere from 20 to 35 miles an hour. So this is interior north bay from portions of sonoma and napa, even vacaville is included in this. You can see by the overnight hours, we have wind gusts of 40 miles an hour. So yeah, i kept my windows closed as well. And right now were in palo alto and i was looking at the air quality tracker. Its showing an unhealthy level here. I can smell the smoke even this morning. And all of this haze throughout the bay area is prompting an air quality advisory right now. So we want to show you some footage from yesterday. An orange haze was hanging over cupertino in the south bay. And we also saw people buying masks at a San Francisco hardware store. People all around the bay area are seen smelling and really feeling that smoke. Air quality experts say we could expect to see the impacts for the next couple of days. Fires up north in california and in Southern Oregon have kind of picked up over the weekend. And unfortunately, the weather patterns have changed and its just bringing it right over us. Now, there might be sort of short term unhealthy patches of air quality, so people should use the should take precautions. In the east bay. Some high schools even canceled sports practices because of the bad air quality. And if youre able to stay indoors today, that is what air quality experts are recommending. Also, keep those windows and your doors closed. And another very important thing, the San FranciscoFire Department is reminding everybody, do not call 911 if you are just smelling the smoke, unless you actually see flames from a physical location or you see smoke coming from a physical location, then you can call 911. A group of activists, including a civil rights attorney, are criticizing oaklands naacp chapter, claiming it works against the local black community. Some of these activists include former members of the oakland naacp chapter and a letter to the national naacp. They accused the local chapter of using tough on crime rhetoric, which they say targets black people. They also say it evokes stereotypes and narratives of the black community. Now, this group is calling on the national naacp to look into oaklands chapter. The Oakland Branch is currently using its position to hijack the legacy of the Historic Organization and using it as a weapon. A weapon in a statement to abc seven news, terry wiley, a member of the oakland naacp, says, i have no comment to accusations that are intended to distract everyones attention from the rising number of retail thefts, robberies, carjackings, murders , business closures and overall lawlessness that has affected has everyone feeling unsafe in the city of oakland and the city of oakland is still looking for a new police chief. An independent investigation cleared former police chief Leronne Armstrong of any wrongdoing following his firing earlier this year. Mayor shengtao fired him without cause in february. Armstrong sat down with abc7 news to provide an update. My hope is that, you know, we acknowledge the fact that, you know, ive been vindicated and we acknowledge the fact that i do have a passion for the city of oakland and well see what decisions are made after that. The oakland and the oakland naacp is now joining the call for armstrong to be reinstated. And the Police Commission has hinted he could end up on the short list of candidates that is being sent to the mayor. Some oakland businesses are also criticizing the city for missing a deadline that would have given them funds to fight retail crime. That issue came up at last nights city council meeting. Thats where the money needs to go because they create jobs for the community, for Small Businesses are now preparing to fight back on their own with a one day strike. The date of that has yet to be announced. Dozens rally on the steps of San Francisco city hall in support of the city, paying reparations to its black residents. But thats just one of several proposals being considered in sonoma. Contra costa and san mateo counties. Health care workers will be mandated to wear masks again. A Health Official in Sonoma County says this is because of a higher rate of severe cases of respiratory illnesses between the fall and spring. Cruise and waymos Autonomous Vehicles have federal lawmakers servicing more safety concerns. As congressman kevin mullen and House Speaker nancy pelosi sent a letter to the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration requesting more sufficient data be collected from the companies they are concerned with the rise of incidents involving Autonomous Vehicles around San Francisco. Officials say there were more than 120 selfdriving car related incidents in june, which is an increase from about 30 a month in prior months. A caravan of truckers rolled into the State Capitol with a loud message for governor gavin newsom. The truckers rally yesterday to pressure the governor to sign ab 316. The bill would require a trained human operator on autonomous trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds. Drivers say self driving trucks are not safe and they are also fearful of a massive loss of jobs. These big corporations want to use Autonomous Vehicle technology for one reason only, and thats to eliminate jobs. They want to eliminate jobs because they want to lower their labor costs and increase profits. Governor newsom has not indicated if he would sign the bill into law. Several states, including texas and florida, already allow selfdriving trucks on their freeways. Yesterday was a National Voter registration day. Experts say registering people to vote is only part of the battle in election participation. Getting those registered voters to turn out is the challenge. In the november 2022 general election, 50. 7 of registered voters participated statewide. The primaries in june of 2022 saw just 33. 1 turnout. The 2024 general election is more than a year away. And the result of that is that the smaller elections, local elections, state elections, primary elections tend to have lower turnout. Jobina thank you, carmassi. 53 year old dale mooney was at Gillette Stadium in massachusetts for a patriots versus dolphins game on sunday. Video shows mooney in a patriots jersey and hat getting into a row of seats as a fight broke out. His friends who were also at the game claim they were verbally taunted by other fans. Witnesses say mooney was punched twice and never regained consciousness. I just saw a guy in a dolphins jersey come over. He delivered two punches and at that point everybody kind of let go of the guy and he fell back into his seat and he unfortunately never, never woke up. Witnesses also say people were trying to do cpr on mooney for about 10 to 15 minutes. He was eventually taken to the hospital where he later died. His wife says he did not have any medical conditions that she was aware of. Gillette stadium officials said theyre heartbroken by the death of mooney. This will erode back to the coast and then well get into the hazy conditions again due to the northerly winds that are ramping up in the upper levels of the atmosphere. You can see saint helena here over at 24 miles an hour. So as long as those winds are out of the north, they kind of cut off that onshore flow. And we need that to clean out the air. So the northerly winds dominating our weather today, tomorrow and allowing for the poor air quality, the hazy conditions. And youll probably certainly smell the smoke as well. A couple of systems want to point out here, one to the north of us that will be bringing down the northerly winds and another one that will move in behind it. And as we look outside, once again, temperatures from the upper 50s to near 60. So its cool.
