Now seeking to drop the criminal case against president trumps First National security adviser michael flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi during the russia investigation. What weve learned tonight. Good evening and its great to have you with us here on a thursday night. And we begin tonight with concern at the white house this evening for one of the president s military valets, who has tested positive for coronavirus. And of course, the next question, how much contact did he have with the president , was he wearing a mask . That valet, we have learned, often serving the president meals and diet cokes in the office. The white house says the president and Vice President have been tested again, and the results were negative. And across the country tonight, the new job numbers, another 3. 2 million americans filing for unemployment. More than 33 million jobs lost since this began. And tonight, as we do every night here, the numbers. The american lives lost. The death toll now rising above 75,000. Nearly 3,000 more lives lost since yesterday. 1. 2 million confirmed cases. President trump responding today to news of his military valet coming down with the virus. Someone who works in the west wing. What he said when asked, is this scary . And the president also saying hed actually had, quote, very little contact with the valet. The president reiterating today what he told me this week in phoenix, that it is time for parts of this country to open up. 39 states have already eased restrictions, even as cases continue to rise in 19 of those states. And tonight, with those new unemployment numbers, the lines at food banks across this country. Parents struggling to feed their children. We have new reporting on that condition believed to be connected to the virus now being seen in children. We have just learned of new cases in boston and in l. A. Tonight. Reporter a coronavirus scare for the president. For the first time, somebody who has been with him in the oval office has tested positive. Does it spook you . It can be scary for some people. Yeah, its a little bit strange, but its one of those things. Reporter its one of the president s personal valets who tested positive, a military servicemember on the team that serves his lunch and diet cokes in the oval office. Ive had very little contact, personal contact with this gentleman. Know who he is, good person, but ive had very little contact. Reporter but the president revealed he is now going to be tested for coronavirus every day. No matter what you do, testing is not a perfect art, so we test once a week. Now were going to go testing once a day. Reporter while there will be testing every day at the white house, Testing Capacity for the rest of the country is still short of where most experts say it needs to be for people to get back to work safely. Just yesterday, the White House Press secretary dismissed the idea of making tests available for all. So the notion that Everyone Needs to be tested is just simply nonsensical. The people who need to be tested are vulnerable populations. Reporter today, the president was asked if he is concerned that many states are moving forward with plans to partially reopen, even though they have not met the white houses guidelines for reopening. We give leeway to the governors and these are governors that have done a good job. We rely on them. We trust them. And hopefully theyre making the right decisions. Reporter the president met today with the governor of texas, who is reopening his state even though the number of cases there are on the rise. We created these surge forces that will go out to regions where there are flareups, and its like putting out a fire. Reporter as the president urges states to reopen, the cdc has prepared a draft roadmap to help restaurants, churches, schools and others to do it safely. But today, we learned the white house has rejected that draft. A senior official telling abc news it is, quote, unnecessary and duplicative. All right, so, lets bring in jon karl, hes live with us in washington tonight. And jon, the president told me this week in phoenix that this is an invisible enemy, its tough, and he said to me that it could happen to me. The president was very clear that he knew of the dangers of this virus. You reported there, hes now tested negative, but of course, immediate questions, jon. The president was asked today, whether his valet wore a mask when they were together. Reporter and the president said that his valets do wear masks, but ive got to tell you, david, i have been in and out of the white house regularly throughout this crisis and i have almost never seen any member of the white house staff Wearing Masks wearing a has income the west wing. All right, jon karl with us from washington. Jon, thank you. We have new reporting tonight on that dangerous condition being seen in children, possibly linked to the virus. Governor cuomo warning parents to be on the lookout for symptoms. That was just 24 hours ago. And now tonight, new cases being reported now here in new york and boston and in l. A. , as well. Tonight here, we hear from the family of an 8yearold boy who went into cardiac arrest. His brother jumping in to perform cpr, saving him. Heres abcs stephanie ramos. Reporter tonight, new cases of a Mysterious Illness possibly linked to the coronavirus now flaring up in children. In new york city, 8yearold Jayden Hardowar became critically ill and was rushed to the hospital after his mild fever worsened, sending him into cardiac arrest. We saw him there. We check for a pulse, no pulse at all. Immediately, my older boy, he got on the bed and he starts to pump the chest. Reporter jaydens older brother, a boy scout, administering cpr as they waited for help to arrive. Doctors later testing jayden for covid19. He was negative, but tested positive for antibodies. Hes conscious. Hes listening to us, but his voice is not there yet. Hes not able to say much. Reporter jayden is one of at least 64 children in new york affected by whats being called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. And tonight, doctors reporting three cases in los angeles, at least two cases in boston, as well as cases popping up in several other states, louisiana and michigan. Doctors say symptoms include fever, rash, eye irritation, swollen lymph nodes and stomach illness, similar to a rare condition called kawasaki disease, which causes the inflammation of blood vessels and can lead to heart problems. Whats important for these children when theyre coming in, because their cardiovascular system is so compromised, theyre in shock. Jay, can you say one thing more . Can you say, good night, mommy . Good night, mommy. Reporter its been one week since jayden was admitted to the hospital. Hes now off a ventilator and his family is seeing him for the first time tonight since he was taken to the e. R. Off the ventilator, that is good news. The parents going to the hospital. Stephanie with us from Cohen Childrens Medical Center on long island tonight. Thats where jayden is recovering. And i know the parents are there this evening. What more have you learned . How is he doing tonight . Reporter well, david, jaydens family tells me hes doing much better and could be released as early as this weekend. Now, the chief of pediatric Critical Care here at the hospital says a lot of these kids that are being admitted with kawasakilike symptoms are recovering, but theyll need to followup with a cardiologist. David . All right, were all pulling for jayden tonight. Stephanie, thank you. There are new numbers here this evening, the toll on american families. 3. 2 Million People filing unemployment claims last week alone. More than 33 million americans now out of work since this all began. Many of those families say they now have to choose between paying bills and feeding their families. Heres eva pilgrim. Reporter tonight, lines stretching longer. The food harder to come by. And desperation growing. I have three kids at my house. I have my wife. Two weeks for two weeks, we were waiting for some food. We dont get nothing. Reporter more than 33 million americans now out of work. In new york, lines snaking through the streets. At this brooklyn food pantry, organizers seeing people facing painful dilemmas. Your choice is, do i pay my rent . Do i pay my bills . Do i feed my children . Reporter 9 million children 12 and under are now not getting enough food, according to a new survey released by the brookings institution. Way more empty shelves. Reporter with so many in need, this Salvation Army in ft. Lauderdale nearly running out of food. Hundreds lining up before dawn in north carolina. Yoon marshall is a taxi driver. Shes been out of work for weeks and is just trying to feed her 10yearold son. I do really need the help. My bank account is getting negative. Ive basically run out of options. Reporter david pressing the president about the very real possibility of 19 unemployment. Let me ask you about the tremendous hurt in this country. There are 30 million americans who are unemployed. You dont need me to tell you that. Were expecting the new Unemployment Rate this week. There have been forecasts, 15 , 16 , 17 . One of your advisers projected an Unemployment Rate of 19 . Thats nearly 1 in 5 americans without a job. How bad is this going to get . Well, that is what it is. And you know, its very interesting. Even the democrats arent blaming me for that. We had to close it up and we saved millions of lives and we did the right thing. Now were getting back to work. The president earlier this week in phoenix. And eva, we know there are still Many Americans waiting for stimulus money and Unemployment Benefits . Reporter thats right, david. Up to 10 Million People could still be waiting for those stimulus checks. As for that extra 600 a week in unemployment, the system so overwhelmed by new claims, were hearing from many people they have yet to see any Unemployment Benefits. David . Of course well stay on it. Eva, thank you. Next here tonight, major news in the race for a vaccine. The first vaccine in human trials now approved to enter phase two, thats good news. Testing not just its safety now, but also how well it works. We could get results as soon as this summer, authorities say. And what scientists are also now learning about the virus and mutations. What theyre seeing in different parts of the country. Heres kaylee hartung. Reporter tonight, a new clue in the war against the coronavirus, as scientists race to develop a vaccine. Fortunately, it doesnt mutate the way influenza does, so we dont think that well have this very rapid seasonal change that we have to deal with with influenza. Reporter researchers say here in the u. S. , we have a west coast and an east coast version of the virus, but these minor differences wont hinder the quest for a vaccine. And tonight, drug maker moderna moving at record speed, receiving fda approval to advance to phase two of its vaccine study. We need to bring forward every potential vaccine that has the opportunity to help because time is of the essence. Reporter scientists evaluating the vaccines safety during phase one. Neal browning was among the first 45 participants. Hopefully this is the first time that this type of vaccine can be successful. Reporter next, theyll test the vaccines effectiveness, with 600 healthy americans. So many volunteers on that front. And kaylee, news tonight from the nih, as well. Director collins now weighing in on how long immunity might last if youve been exposed to the virus . Reporter thats right, david. Director collins saying he hopes immunity lasts more than a year. But he cautions, it may take tracking someone with antibodies for years to determine how long that immunity may last and if they can get reinfected. David . All right, kaylee hartung, our thanks to you tonight. And now to that other major headline this evening. The department of justice seeking to withdraw all criminal charges against michael flynn, president trumps First National security adviser, who had pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. Heres our chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas tonight. Reporter tonight, the department of justice announcing a bombshell, seeking to drop the case against michael flynn. Lock him up reporter it was 29 months ago he left the courthouse in shame, after pleading guilty to lying to the fbi. The day after that plea, the president tweeting he dismissed his National Security adviser because he lied to the Vice President. I fired him because of what he said to mike pence, very simple. Reporter flynns guilty plea centered around lying about his contact with them Russian Ambassador sergey kislyak. But today, the Justice Department concluded that flynns prosecution was unjustifed and that his statements were not material to any viable counterintelligence investigation concerning the russians. Today, the president praising flynn as a hero. He was an innocent man. He is a great gentleman. Reporter then the president directed his fire at the fbi for an investigation into russian interference that he believes should never have been started. Theyre dishonest, crooked people. Theyre scum, and i say it a lot, theyre scum. Theyre human scum. Reporter but tonight, weve not heard from fbi officials, who have been adamant that lying to them compromises the entire criminal justice system. David, were unsure how the judge in the case is going to react. In the past, hes been very critical of flynn. David . Pierre thomas tonight. Thank you. Our fees are structured so we do better when our clients do better. At Fisher Investments were clearly different. We turn now to the deadly shooting of a young black jogger in georgia, killed during an altercation with a white father and son. Fueling the outrage now, a letter from a prosecutor who removed himself from the case, explaining why he would not have the two men arrested. Heres abcs Steve Osunsami. Reporter state investigators are going over this cell phone video frame by frame, looking at the last moments of Ahmaud Arberys life. The 25yearold is seen jogging through a neighborhood near his home, when he runs into this white pickup truck. The two men waiting for him with their guns told police that they believed he was same person seen on security cameras breaking into homes and had chased him here. Theres a black male running down the street. Reporter they claim that they were trying to make a citizens arrest. You see and hear the violent end. [ gunshot ] police say the gunmen are Gregory Mcmichael and his son, travis, seen here in a photo online powed by the naacp. The father is a former Police Officer and a former investigator for a county prosecutor. Neither have been charged tonight. I think that no arrests have been made basically because because of the title that he carried as a retired Police Officer. Reporter because of their apparent connections to the father and son, two prosecutors have recused themselves from the case. And in this letter, one of them, who has seen this same video, says he sees it differently, saying that arbery initiated the fight, grabbed the shotgun and under georgia law, mcmichael was allowed to use deadly force to protect himself. He blames the man who died, saying that his aggressive nature led him to attack an armed man. He also says it was perfectly legal to stop arbery in the first place. Attorneys for the victims family strongly disagree. The important reason why it could not be a citizens arrest is that under that statute, a citizen would actually have to observe a crime taking place. Ahmaud arbery was only observed running down the road. Reporter the president is speaking out on this tonight, saying that his heart goes out to the young mans family. They would have celebrated their sons birthday tomorrow. The president says hes expecting a full report on this this evening. David . All right, Steve Osunsami tonight. Steve, thank you.
