[indistinct announcement on p.a. system] so same time next week? well, of course. announcer: put away a few bucks. feel like a million bucks. for free tips to help you save, go to ♪ feed the pig ♪ this morning on "world news now," deadly raid. police go after a dangerous terror cell about to be on the verge of a major terror attack the frightening takedown, the gunfire and why the crackdown in europe is far from over. terror sting, the takedown never seen before. the fbi operation to arrest a homegrown radical who wanted to bomb the capitol. his frightening plot and how he got busted. medical marvel, surgeons use a 3-d printer to make a model of a girl's broken heart. how the technology made a difference and may have saved her life. and in "the skinny" who is up for an academy award and who was left off the list. the controversial snubs and outrage that is spreading far from hollywood. it is friday, january 16th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all on this friday. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. let's get to the top story. the vigilance and nervousness in europe about terrorism officials in belgium saying they have broken up a major plot to kill police with a series of raids. >> officers were greeted with gun fire. this is near the german border. >> alexander marquardt has the details. >> reporter: the crackle of gun fire. the glow of flames, piercing the darkness in this tiny belgium town of verviers, 80 miles southeast of brussels. >> this group was about to commit terrorist attacks in belgium. >> police were executing search warrants when they were met with a storm of bullets. >> certain suspects immediately opened fire with automatic weapons. >> reporter: terrified residents watching helplessly. i heard three explosions, this man says. two of the suspects were shot dead. a third wounded and captured. prosecutors say they were investigating extremists, some of whom had recently returned from fighting in syria. the gun battle is one of at least ten anti-terror operations carried out across belgium. officials say terrorists were preparing to carry out major and imminent attacks. this as europe recovers from last week's terror attacks in paris. the hunt for accomplices in those killings goes on. this operation is highlighting the growing fears of officials in europe and the u.s. that this could be the beginning of a new wave of terror. alexander marquardt, abc news, brussels. >> now for an exclusive look at how the u.s. prevents terror here. abc news obtained video of a similar fbi sting three years ago that also prevented an attack on the u.s. capitol building. undercover fbi agents stayed with a man they believed was a terrorist as he went to test a bomb with men he thought were al quade i'm going to put everything on my body and i'm going to go inside like a real place, maybe the capitol. >> i'm done. i'm done. my work is done in this life. >> this would be terrorist was arrested just two blocks from the capitol. he's now in prison. the fbi official tells abc news the agency doesn't begin a sting until it is certain the suspect intends to go ahead with his attack. now to another american charged with plotting to attack the u.s. capitol packed with lawmakers. new information is surfacing about the quiet young man from ohio accused of stockpiling weapons and ammunition. here's more from abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: from his hometown of cincinnati to capitol hill, there's nothing but shock. how did this 20-year-old so-called mama's boy go from this, the clean-cut wrestler, the home body who loved his cat to this, a man the fbi accuses of preparing to bomb the capitol in support of isis and al qaeda terror groups? >> he's not a terrorist and i don't appreciate him being painted as a terrorist. >> reporter: but fbi officials who acknowledge they ran a sting on christopher cornell say his plans involved not only detonating bombs at the capitol but then mowing down members of congress with assault rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition he purchased at a gun store moments before his arrest. cornell's parents said the boy was just trying to figure himself out, described as a quiet student who converted to islam last summer. that's when he first appeared on fbi radar after they say he pledged his support to isis on social media under an assumed name. officials believe cornell was the classic lone wolf, but the fbi does believe he was trying to communicate with radicals overseas. although in the end, no one from overseas apparently had anything to do with this. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. the second phase of jury selection is now underway in the terror trial of the boston marathon suspect. and the challenges of seating the jury are quickly emerging. at least six jurors say they already believe dzhokhar tsarnaev is guilty. the first man questioned said he would sentence dzhokhar tsarnaev to death and couldn't imagine hearing evidence that would change his mind. first of what will no doubt be many lawsuits to be filed in in the accident in the metro system accident. dozens of passengers were on a train. a woman died from respiratory failure. the plaintiff in the suit rich thought he was going to die and sent a text message to his family. >> i told my mother that i loved being her son and i told my kids i loved being their dad. >> reporter: he and more than 80 other people were taken to the hospital. investigators believe an electrical malfunction was the problem. the lawsuit claims negligence and maintenance and a slow response to the emergency. michigan man has died after his parachute failed to deploy during a jump from a tv broadcast tower. police say josh sheppard was an experienced skydiver and jump instructor, but they add he did not have permission to climb the 1,000 foot tower he jumped 5:30 wednesday evening and landed on a snowy field below. a man in canada got the fright of his life driving down the highway. before the individual video we should say, he's fine. he was traveling near toronto and a tire that had broken loose from another car came right at him. it happened so fast all he could do is duck. the tire struck the top of the windshield and broke the car's sunroof. as we said, the guy is fine. >> new 3-d printing technology may have saved a 4-year-old south florida girl's life. she had already had three open heart surgeries. there she is. doctors in miami were having trouble visualizing what they needed to do in a fourth operation. roiz otherwise, she wasn't going to live much longer. a model of her damaged heart was created which allowed the surgeons to picture the next >> there was a lot of buzz when 3-d printers came out, would they be helpful, could people print out guns but the medical technology alone that comes from this. >> you're right. this has been talked about. i think we saw a car the other day but to see this paying off in such a way, this is fantastic. >> saving a little girl's heart. well, let's check the friday forecast. powerful storm system with rain and mountain snow pounds the northwest, winds may top 70 miles an hour in montana and the first of two storm systems. snow showers in the great lakes. milder in the middle of the country with a january thaw. >> 50s in kansas city, memphis and atlanta. 40s in seattle and washington, d.c. 62 in denver. 20s minneapolis to detroit. 30s in new york and boston. some rug makers in florida are working to replace a rug at the pinellas county sheriffs office because they made a mistake the first time around. just a minor, a little thing. >> take a look. there it is. it seems fine but little closer in the middle, in dog we trust instead of god. >> the rug was put away when the error was noticed. police are embracing the mistake putting the rug up for auction. it starts at $100 and already up to 1100. how long was it down before anyone noticed? >> critics would say it is entrapment. >> at the end of the day all we can say is watch that tape. >> he was arrested two blocks from the u.s. capitol on february 17, 2012. he had a machine gun and attempting to put on what he thought was a suicide vest. he pled guilty and is serving 30 years in jail. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. other european countries are on edge after last week's terrorist attacks in paris. belgium police were met by gun fire while executing a search warrant in a small town. when it was over, two suspects were dead and a third wounded and under arrest. no police injured. the belgium investigation began before the attacks in paris and may have no connection to them. new terror concerns at home after the arrest of an ohio man accused of plotting an assault on the u.s. capitol. the fbi says christopher cornell was planning to take direct aim at members of congress using bombs and assault rifles. the 20-year-old is accused of acting in support of isis and al qaeda. but authorities describe him as a lone wolf. meanwhile, president obama and british prime minister david cameron will discuss counterterrorism efforts at the white house today. they search for bodies from the airasia crash. this morning they are making another attempt to get to the main part of the jet after giving up yesterday. only 50 bodies have been recovered from the java sea. divers hope to find 100 still missing now the weather is improving. the plane crashed last month off of indonesia. for the first time we are hearing recordings of a pilot in distress that got lost in foggy weather across the coast. her chilling comments with air traffic control are raising concerns about inexperienced pilots. abc's jim avila reports. >> hello. >> hello. >> i don't know where i am. >> reporter: a small, frightened voice begging for help. >> i can't see airport. >> lost in the night sky 600 feet over florida's central coast. >> okay. stay calm. stay calm. maintain your present altitude. >> reporter: the 38-year-old. mihoko tabata is at the controls in full panic. >> calm down. calm down. >> reporter: the calming voice of the daytona control tower attempting to talk the pilot down, the airport a mile away but the single-engine cessna is too low. >> are you climbing, ma'am? >> once we panic it's over. >> reporter: too often inexperienced pilots stall while climbing as this instructor showed me over california. >> try to relax when that happened. >> reporter: but she was inexperienced and piloting a plane she was not certified to fly alone, according to the plane's owner. >> if you can hear me please contact me. please say something. >> reporter: there would be no answer. mihoko tabata died on impact. the wreckage found the five foot deep waters of the atlantic ocean. jim avila, abc news, washington. southwest airlines is learning a very expensive lesson about the passenger bill of rights. the airline has been hit with a record $1.6 million fine after stranding passengers for hours on the tarmac at chicago's midway airport during a wintry storm last year. southwest said it was short staffed and couldn't handle grounded passengers. the fine is the largest assessed for a tarmac delay. mystery illness is sickening guests at the opryland hotel. health investigators in nashville are investigating after an increase in the number of guests suffering from flu-like is symptoms as they look for a cause and trying to stop it from spreading. opryland is taking it seriously and following the strict standards of sanitation. time for your friday forecast now. first of two major storms bringing heavy snow and rain. 70 mile an hour winds across montana today. lake-effect snow showers around the great lakes. milder in the middle of the country. 50s and 60s denver to atlanta. 70s los angeles and miami. 40s in salt lake city and washington, d.c. 30s in boston and new york. 20s from minneapolis to detroit. how about some furniture and football fun? course. i'm t.j. holmes and it is friday but we have a nervous europe right now. we have to start with this terrorism news. france is hunting for accomplices of the paris terrorists but now belgium police staged a raid near the border with germany that is getting a lot of attention. >> they say they prevented what would have been a major attack. alexander marquardt is there. >> reporter: as night fell, bullets flying in this small belgium town, dozens of gunshots, flames filling the windows as police descended on this building in verviers. you can see the flash lights as they went in. the drama unfolding as police tried to serve warrants to terror suspects who recently returned from syria. >> suspects opened fire with automatic weapons at special forces of the police. >> reporter: by the end, two suspects were dead, a third arrested. that assault, one of at least ten anti-terror operations across belgium. officials said terrorists were preparing to carry out major and imminent attacks. brussels, less than two hours from paris, which is of course on high alert. >> you can see the increased security presence in the belgium capital. authorities raised the terror alert level to the second highest for police stations and sensitive buildings like here at the justice ministry. this tiny country now fertile ground for breeding jihadists. security officials say more than 350 young men from here have traveled to syria to fight. the concern now, they are coming home. there's no known link between the terror cells in belgium and france and to a large extent that's the worry. this operation's highlighting the growing fears of officials across europe and in the u.s. that this could be the beginning of a new wave of terror. alex marquardt, abc news, brussels. >> five of the paris victims were tlied rest yesterday. two of them were cartoonists at "charlie hebdo". the coffin of one was decorated with cartoons drawn by his friends. speakers of the funeral vow the ideals of the magazine would continue despite the attack on its offices. concerns about home grown terrorists are looming large as we learn more about the several failed plots to unleash death and destruction on american soil. the ohio man arrested on terror charges this week isn't the only one accused of setting his sights on the u.s. capitol. abc news obtained video of an fbi sting that ended in the arrest of a would be suicide bomber. here's abc's karen travers. >> reporter: house speaker john boehner says government surveillance program stopped a potential attack on the u.s. capitol. >> it was our law enforcement officials and those programs that helped us top this person before he committed a heinous crime in our nation's capitol. >> reporter: 20-year-old christopher cornell, accused of preparing to storm the capitol with guns and bombs in support of isis and al qaeda. he was arrested moments after he purchased assault rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition at an ohio gun store. abc news got an exclusive inside look at another fbi under cover sting operation. this one targeting a man the bureau believes was a homegrown radical. amine el-khalifi wanted to massacre lawmakers at the u.s. capitol. here he is driving to test a bomb, unaware the men he's with are undercover fbi agents. he thinks they are al qaeda. >> i am going to put everything on my body and go inside like a real place, maybe capitol. >> reporter: amine el-khalifi, was arrested two blocks from the u.s. capitol on february 17th, 2012. he had a machine gun and was attempting to put on what he thought was a suicide vest. he pled guilty and is serving 30 years in prison. karen travers, abc news, washington. new overnight, u.s. troops are heading to the middle east to help the syrian opposition the 400 personnel will train the moderate forces. the mission will begin in early spring and will be based in saudi arabia, turkey and qatar. hundreds of additional support personnel are likely. coalition partners are expected to contribute forces to the training program. the u.s. freed five suspected al qaeda fighters. the five men at been at guantanamo military prison in cuba for at least a dozen years. they are down to 122 prisoners at guantanamo bay now. the obama administration wants to close the prison but some republican senators want a moratorium on further releases from the detention camps. starting today travel and trade with cuba is easier than the past half century. special permits from the treasury department are no longer required and americans can use their credit cards in cuba and bring back small amounts of rum and cigars. u.s. airlines can fly scheduled routes to cuba. however, there are some restrictions. ordinary tourism is banned. you have to have a specific reason, like sports or journalism or something like that to go but the restrictions have eased a bit. pope francis is urging filipinos to put an end to corruption, poverty and social injustice inflicting their country. tens of thousands of people greeted the pope as he arrived in the philippines and smiled as he made his way around the capital city in his pope-mobile. it's the first papal visit in 20 years to the catholic nation. the pope also made a big announcement regarding his upcoming trip to the u.s. he plans to name a saint when he visits in september. he was a franciscan priest who brought christianity to the u.s. in the 1700s. he was known as the apostle of california. counterterrorism and cybersecurity will be at the top of the agenda at the white house today. president obama and british prime minister david cameron are set to meet in the oval office after a less formal working dinner last night. cameron says the two leaders will work on a joint effort to "stay one step ahead of those who seek to attack us." republicans have tapped joni ernst of iowa to deliver the formal response to the state of the union address. she's behind those microphones there. ernst was newly elected in november. first woman to represent her state in congress. she is an iraq war veteran and a lieutenant colonel in the iowa national guard. more importantly, analysts say, she is a fresh face on the national political scene. >> she may need a stepping stool for that speech for the big day. i know. new details about the flu vaccine and the inability to protect people from the virus. the cdc says this year's vaccine is only 23% effective. normally 60% or more. production of each year's vaccine starts months in advance and the virus strains mutate. this year it was more than usual. experts say you should still get the shot because 23% is better than no percent. google is going to stop selling its google eye glass device on monday. it is discontinuing it to develop a more affordable version. the explorer edition has been on the market for nearly two years, costing $1500. no word on when it will be back on sale. i never understood what the google glass was. >> i didn't know it was 1500 bucks. >> neither did i. >> i understand why it didn't take off. google glass is coming off the market and a new smart light bulb is about to go on the market. it is designed by cree and it is a 60-watt replacement bulb. here's the thing. it can be controlled by a smartphone app that allows you to turn it on anywhere and do other cool stuff like set up a schedule for when it turns this morning on "world news now," deadly raid. police go after a dangerous terror cell about to be on the verge of a major terror attack the frightening takedown, the gunfire and why the crackdown in europe is far from over. terror sting, the takedown never seen before. the fbi operation to arrest a homegrown radical who wanted to bomb the capitol. his frightening plot and how he got busted. medical marvel, surgeons use a 3-d printer to make a model of a girl's broken heart. how the technology made a difference and may have saved her life. and in "the skinny" who is up for an academy award and who was left off the list. the controversial snubs and outrage that is spreading far from hollywood. it is friday, january 16th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all on this friday. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. let's get to the top story. the vigilance and nervousness in europe about terrorism officials in belgium saying they have broken up a major plot to kill police with a series of raids. >> officers were greeted with gunfire at one location. this is near the german border. alex marquardt has the details. >> reporter: the crackle of gun fire. the glow of flames, piercing the darkness in this tiny belgium town of verviers, 80 miles southeast of brussels. >> this group was about to commit terrorist attacks in belgium. >> police were executing search warrants when they were met with a storm of bullets. >> certain suspects immediately opened fire with automatic weapons. >> reporter: terrified residents watching helplessly. i heard three explosions, this man says. two of the suspects were shot dead. a third wounded and captured. prosecutors say they were investigating extremists, some of whom had recently returned from fighting in syria. the gun battle is one of at least ten anti-terror operations carried out across belgium. officials say terrorists were preparing to carry out major and imminent attacks. this as europe recovers from last week's terror attacks in paris. the hunt for accomplices in those killings goes on. this operation is highlighting the growing fears of officials across europe and in the u.s. that this could be the beginning of a new wave of terror. alex marquardt, abc news, brussels. >> now for an exclusive look at how the u.s. prevents terror here. abc news obtained video of a similar fbi sting three years ago that also prevented an attack on the u.s. capitol building. undercover fbi agents stayed with a man they believed was a homegrown terrorist even as he went to test a bomb with men he thought were al qaeda. i'm going to put everything on my body and i'm going to go inside like a real place, maybe the capitol. >> i'm done. i'm done. my work is done in this life. >> this would be terrorist was arrested just two blocks from the capitol. he's now in prison. the fbi official tells abc news the agency doesn't begin a sting until it is certain the suspect intends to go ahead with his attack. now to another american charged with plotting to attack the u.s. capitol packed with lawmakers. new information is surfacing about the quiet young man from ohio accused of stockpiling weapons and ammunition. here's more from abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: from his hometown of cincinnati to capitol hill, there's nothing but shock. how did this 20-year-old so-called mama's boy go from this, the clean-cut wrestler, the home body who loved his cat to this, a man the fbi accuses of preparing to bomb the capitol in support of isis and al qaeda terror groups? >> he's not a terrorist and i don't appreciate him being painted as a terrorist. >> reporter: but fbi officials who acknowledge they ran a sting on christopher cornell say his plans involved not only detonating bombs at the capitol but then mowing down members of congress with assault rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition he purchased at a gun store moments before his arrest. cornell's parents said the boy was just trying to figure himself out, described as a quiet student who converted to islam last summer. that's when he first appeared on fbi radar after they say he pledged his support to isis on social media under an assumed name. officials believe cornell was the classic lone wolf, but the fbi does believe he was trying to communicate with radicals overseas. although in the end, no one from overseas apparently had anything to do with this. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. the second phase of jury selection is now underway in the terror trial of the boston marathon suspect. and the challenges of seating the jury are quickly emerging. at least six jurors say they already believe dzhokhar tsarnaev is guilty. the first man questioned said he would sentence dzhokhar tsarnaev to death and couldn't imagine hearing evidence that would change his mind. first of what will no doubt be many lawsuits to be filed in in the accident in the metro system accident. dozens of passengers were on a train. a woman died from respiratory failure. the plaintiff in the suit rich thought he was going to die and sent a text message to his family. >> i told my mother that i loved being her son and i told my kids i loved being their dad. >> reporter: he and more than 80 other people were taken to the hospital. investigators believe an electrical malfunction was the problem. the lawsuit claims negligence and maintenance and a slow response to the emergency. a michigan man has died after his parachute failed to deploy during a jump from a tv broadcast tower. police say josh sheppard was an experienced skydiver and jump instructor, but they add he did not have permission to climb the 1,000-foot tower. he jumped at 5:30 wednesday evening and landed on a snowy field below. a man in canada got the fright of his life driving down the highway. before the video, we should say he's fine. he was traveling near toronto and a tire that had broken loose from another car came right at him. it happened so fast all he could do is duck. the tire struck the top of the windshield and broke the car's sunroof. as we said, the guy is fine. >> new 3-d printing technology may have saved a 4-year-old south florida girl's life. she had already had three open heart surgeries. there she is. doctors in miami were having trouble visualizing what they needed to do in a fourth operation. otherwise, she wasn't going to live much longer. a model of her damaged heart was created which allowed the surgeons to picture the next operation. >> what's beautiful about this model is i can position it as though i was standing at the operating table. if i'm at an operating table this is how her heart would be. >> since the operation, the little girl has made good progress. her parents are getting ready to take her home. she is able to walk around and play. her father calls it a blessing. >> there was a lot of buzz when 3-d printers came out, would they be helpful, could people print out guns but the medical technology alone that comes from this. >> you're right. this has been talked about. we see 3-d printing -- i think we saw a car the other day but to see this paying off in such a way, this is fantastic. >> saving a little girl's heart. well, let's check the friday forecast. powerful storm system with rain and mountain snow pounds the northwest, winds may top 70 miles an hour in montana and the first of two storm systems. snow showers in the great lakes. milder in the middle of the country with a january thaw. >> 50s in kansas city, memphis and atlanta. 40s in seattle and washington, d.c. 62 in denver. 20s minneapolis to detroit. 30s in new york and boston. some rug makers in florida are working to replace a rug at the pinellas county sheriffs office because they made a mistake the first time around. just a minor, a little thing. >> take a look. there it is. >> can you see it?
