islamic extremists are conquering large parts of this country. president obama said the u.s. will provide some aid to the iraqi government. >> reports say that may include air strikes by drones or u.s. jets, but won't include sending u.s. troops. iran, however, is sending troops to aid the shiite-iraqi government and as it loses ground to extremists there maybe more troops from iraq heading in there. terry moran has more from iraq. >> ferocious fighting in northern iraq. iraqi soldiers desperately trying to hold off the jihadist onslaught sweeping down toward baghdad but the iraqi troops are losing. these incredible scenes posted on you-tube by the militants show thousands of iraqi soldiers who surrendered and are now prisoners, the militants claimed. they have wracked up victory after victory. vast territory, major cities falling under this black flag an these fighters threaten baghdad, 11 years after u.s. troops toppled saddam hussein. all of that is now crumbling. the triumphant fighters from the islamic state of iraq and syria, as they are called, isis. a track record of brutality, executions, mass beheadings, massacres. even al qaeda disavowed them. their goal, a new nation straddling two countries and pure islam as they define it, strict, intolerant puritanical. you can sense the fear here past this long line of cars an hour away the city of mosul under control of militants. people fleeing for their lives with their families and possessions and every car searched for weapons and explosives. a wounded child, whole families with nowhere to go. and anger at the government and army that failed them. >> the army just left. they just left you alone. >> reporter: president obama resisting pleas from the iraqi government for immediate u.s. air strikes to turn the tide tread cautiously. >> i don't rule out anything because we have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold. >> reporter: here in iraq, antonio, texas, this morning for their first visit since his release from taliban captivity. his new home is the brooke army medical center. he will continue to recuperate and be out of the public spotlight. he was held five years the longest of any american soldier since the vietnam war. now to a shocking and brutal attack inside of a catholic church in phoenix. a young priest is dead and another in critical condition and police don't know who did it or why. abc's mary bruce has the details. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. the phoenix police are on the hunt for those who perpetrated this unimaginable crime, trying to determine what could have priest. it's an unthinkable act of violence against two peaceful men. a horrific attack inside of this phoenix catholic church, leaving one priest dead and another fighting for his life. >> the catholic church suffered a great loss today. >> reporter: it was shortly after 9:00 p.m. on wednesday when police responded to the 911 call of a burglary at the mother of mercy mission church. they found the man that placed the call father joseph beaten within an inch of his life and father kenneth walker shot. amid his own suffering, he offered walker his last rites. walker later died at the hospital. he was just 28 years old. >> just willing, loving, good, holy priest. >> reporter: this community in a state of shock. >> why would someone come in and do this kind of thing? here these two priests will go out of their way to help anybody and everybody. >> reporter: the victims were found in a residential portion of the church, not in the sanctuary. a few blocks away, police discovered one of the priest's cars, which had been stolen from the church. the appalling crime remauns a mystery. police have no suspects or motive. >> we catholics are people of faith. we place trust, hope in the lord who will bring healing and comfort to the family and the community. >> reporter: authorities are urging eyewitnesses or toward baghdad, iraqi soldiers are desperate to tamp down the onslaught. the al qaeda linked fighters wreaking havoc in city after city. mosul, tikrit, a vast territory falling under their black flag as they sweep toward the capital. these scenes posted on you-tube by the militants show thousands of iraqi soldiers who surrendered the militants claim. in crisis mode, iraq's government has asked the to it. first in the news -- we begin in iraq. islamic militants seized large portions of iraq and heading toward bagdad. the u.s. trained government security forces disintegrating laying down their american-made weapons and fleeing. the militants say they will impose strict muslim law. the violence pits them against the extremists. some allied with islamic jihad and anti-american groups. abc's martha raddatz says that has washington concerned. >> reporter: president obama says himself that these fighters could be a significant threat to our homeland. the fear, the chaos gives this terror group time and space to plot against america. the white house has made clear there will be no u.s. boots on the ground. and so far no word that we would conduct air strikes, but there is word the u.s. is flying surveillance drones over iraq and a report also that iran is actually sending forces in to help the iraqi government. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. the u.s. is weighing various military options to help iraq. as we heard from martha raddatz sending american troops isn't one of them. president obama said that the u.s. must deal with what he calls an emergency situation in iraq. drones and air strikes are mentioned but the president isn't saying what he will do. >> i don't rule out anything because we do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold. >> republicans say the white house was caught napping by the increasing violence and should have kept a greater military presence in iraq. the withdrawal from iraq two and a half years ago. stay with abc news. for all the developments on this unfolding story, we will have coverage on air and on-line. new this morning word that u.s. fighters were scrambled this week as several russian bombers neared air space near -- penetrated a 200-mile zone near alaska. it is international air space but close enough to trigger u.s. fighters. two bombers came 50 miles from the northern california coast. the russian planes never entered u.s. air space but there have been 50 such incidents in the last five years. after five years in taliban captivity, bowe bergdahl's time in afghanistan is over. he's arriving this morning at his new home in san antonio, texas, where he will continue medical treatment at the brooke army medical center. army doctors say bergdahl has a long way to go before he is fully reintegrated and expected to be reunited with his family in texas. texas congressman pete sessions dropping his bid to replace eric cantor. sessions says he doesn't want to add more turmoil to the already divided republican party. it clears the way for kevin mccarthy who's been favored over sessions. the election for the majority leader is set to take place on june 19th. now to the world cup. one match in the books and plenty of controversy and criticism already. controversy about a referee's decision to award the home team a penalty kick against croatia and i don't think i have cried since i was 12 years old but i can give you a long face. >> we have some serious news and begin with the crisis in iraq. islamic extremists are conquering large parts of this country. president obama said the u.s. will provide some aid to the iraqi government. >> reports say that may include air strikes by drones or u.s. jets, but won't include sending u.s. troops. iran, however, is sending troops to aid the shiite-iraqi government and as it loses ground to extremists there maybe more troops from iraq heading in there. terry moran has more from iraq. >> ferocious fighting in northern iraq. iraqi soldiers desperately trying to hold off the jihadist onslaught sweeping down toward baghdad but the iraqi troops are losing. these incredible scenes posted on you-tube by the militants show thousands of iraqi soldiers who surrendered and are now prisoners, the militants claimed. they have wracked up victory after victory. vast territory, major cities falling under this black flag an these fighters threaten baghdad, 11 years after u.s. troops toppled saddam hussein. all of that is now crumbling. the triumphant fighters from the islamic state of iraq and syria, as they are called, isis. a track record of brutality, executions, mass beheadings, massacres. even al qaeda disavowed them. their goal, a new nation straddling two countries and pure islam as they define it, strict, intolerant puritanical. you can sense the fear here past this long line of cars an hour away the city of mosul under control of militants. people fleeing for their lives with their families and possessions and every car searched for weapons and explosives. a wounded child, whole families with nowhere to go. and anger at the government and army that failed them. >> the army just left. they just left you alone. >> reporter: president obama resisting pleas from the iraqi government for immediate u.s. air strikes to turn the tide tread cautiously. >> i don't rule out anything because we have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold. >> reporter: here in iraq, many people fear it may be too late. there's a widespread sense this country, which has suffered so much for so many years has reached a turning point and is about to disintegrate altogether. terry moran, abc news. >> at one point president obama called iraq the dumb war. remember, at the time, secretary of state colin powell called it the pottery barn rule. you break you it, you bought it. you can't return it and all these years later you see it come back at you. some republicans are accusing the obama administration of taking a nap with iraq. >> so many skeptics about the idea you can train the forces to be vigilant once we pull out. this is definitely not a good testimony to that. >> it's going to be -- >> some laid their arms down and put their hands on their head without firing a shot. >> yeah. >> it's going to be interesting. the crisis in iraq will likely have an impact on your wallet as well. oil prices are rising because iraq is a major supplier of oil. other oil producing countries are close to capacity. the average price of a regular gallon of gas is 3.64 the problem in iraq could add five to ten cents in the next few days. family of bowe bergdahl is in san antonio, texas, this morning for their first visit since his release from taliban captivity. his new home is the brooke army medical center. he will continue to recuperate and be out of the public spotlight. he was held five years the longest of any american soldier since the vietnam war. now to a shocking and brutal attack inside of a catholic church in phoenix. a young priest is dead and another in critical condition and police don't know who did it or why. abc's mary bruce has the details. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. the phoenix police are on the hunt for those who perpetrated this unimaginable crime, trying to determine what could have motivated someone to kill a priest. it's an unthinkable act of violence against two peaceful men. a horrific attack inside of this phoenix catholic church, leaving one priest dead and another fighting for his life. >> the catholic church suffered a great loss today. >> reporter: it was shortly after 9:00 p.m. on wednesday when police responded to the 911 call of a burglary at the mother of mercy mission church. they found the man that placed the call father joseph beaten within an inch of his life and father kenneth walker shot. amid his own suffering, he offered walker his last rites. walker later died at the hospital. he was just 28 years old. >> just willing, loving, good, holy priest. >> reporter: this community in a state of shock. >> why would someone come in and do this kind of thing? here these two priests will go out of their way to help anybody and everybody. >> reporter: the victims were found in a residential portion of the church, not in the sanctuary. a few blocks away, police discovered one of the priest's cars, which had been stolen from the church. the appalling crime remains a mystery. police have no suspects or motive. >> we catholics are people of faith. we place trust, hope in the lord who will bring healing and comfort to the family and the community. >> reporter: authorities are urging eyewitnesses or anyone who may know anything about this heinous crime to come forward as they try to determine who might be responsible. john and rina?
