it should not ever be said in the sentence with a 6-year-old. >> reporter: both hunter and his mom jennifer admit he's had some trouble at school in the past. he's been suspended for roughhousing and for kissing the same girl on the cheek. >> we have been working with him with the classroom disruption. he's been grounded for a while. very big restrictions. >> have you been trying to be good at school? >> yeah, but i just have a lot of energy. 6-year-olds, they have a lot of energy. >> reporter: the superintendent at school district re-1 says that hunter's record will remain within the district and that hunter's actions fit the description of sexual harassment. >> how can you do this? >> pumpkin pie layer cake. we start the pumpkin pie layer cake with pumpkin cake. we add a ton of pumpkin puree, that's the secret. a little spice and ginger and cinnamon. i stamp my cake rounds out and to minimize the amount of cake and we line it with a piece of plastic that they call acetate. it helps to build the cake. i put my two half circles down on my bottom layer. i'm soaking it with a mixture of milk and heavy cream. that is reminiscent of the flavors of the pumpkin pie filling and then we layer our cake. all of our cakes have three layers of filling. first is a liquid cheesecake filling. like an underbakeed cheesecake, and we fold brown butter and graham crackers in it to. next is pumpkin seeds and we caramelize them with sugar and salt and roast them in the oven. once those are in place, we do our last spreadable filling which is my favorite, a pumpkin ganache. the first layer is down. and we will do the same thing all over again. ♪ we will decorate with pumpkin pie seeds and pie crumbs that is pumpkin pie crumbs that is like dough instead of rolling out. we whisk the cake away to the freezer and let it freeze two to three hours so that all of the filling will set. amanda, look at our layer cake. we did it. >> oh, my goodness. looks so beautiful. >> right for a holiday celebration. celebration. >> let's do it. ♪ >> patience, diana, patience. read the topic of the facebook question. >> we want to know what is your favorite holiday dessert. log on to wnnfans.com and let us know. >> ladies first. >> yes, please. thank you. >> you want me to take a piece and leave you the cake? let's get to it. >> good news from capitol hill no less. democrats and republicans joining together to prevent another government shutdown for a few more months. >> and it will allow other lawmakers to address health care and benefits programs. abc's karen travers has the story. >> reporter: a rare occurrence on capitol hill on tuesday. lawmakers announcing a budget deal before the deadline. >> senator murray and i have reached an agreement. >> because of this deal, the budget process can start approaching from crisis to crisis. >> reporter: the deal, if agreed to, would mean the government would not shut down for at least two years and eliminate $65 billion in domestic and defense spending cuts known as the sequester and not raise taxes. when it comes to the nuts and bolts, it's a modest proposal. the reason why this is the first budget agreement in two years. partisan bickering has bogged down the process. but it is not a done deal. the house and senate must vote on this agreement and ryan and murray have a tough sell. >> i'm confident we won't have 100% of the senate or house. >> reporter: some republicans don't like the spending increases. some democrats don't like it doesn't include an extension of unemployment benefits. >> i see this agreement as a step in the right direction. in divided government, you don't always get what you want. >> reporter: it was part of the deal that ended the government shutdown in october, but there's been little optimism in washington that murray and ryan would be able to come up with something that could get through the republican-controlled house and the democrat-controlled senate. in a statement, president obama said the agreement doesn't include everything he'd like. republicans feel the same way. the president said this was a good first step. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> there is encouraging news from washington about employment, as well. employers in october advertised the most jobs in more than five years, up 42,000 to near 4 million. more people quit their jobs that month than in five years. more than 2 million. both are signs of increased confidence in the economy. still, there are nearly three potential job seekers for every opening. brief encounter at the nelson mandela memorial service gathering a lot of attention. president obama greeted world leaders and shook the hand of castro. some critics say he shouldn't have done that and others are wondering if it is a signal of thawing relations with cuba. the white house said it was not planned. tens of thousands of people lined the route of nelson mandela's glass coffin as it made its way to lie in state the next three days. south africans were asked to form a guard of honor for the country's first black president. mandela was honored by world leaders and ordinary citizens at the stadium. the mood was joyous despite steady rain. and there was rejoicing in nevada after a missing family was found alive and well two days after they vanished in the mountains. the couple, their two kids and niece and nephew was going to play in the snow when their jeep overturned. they survived in sub zero temperatures by burning a spare tire for heat. rescuers found tire tracks in the snow after picking up a faint cell phone signal. a group of strangers came to the rescue of a group of soldiers risking their lives to pull him from a burning car. several drivers pulled over when they saw a pickup truck engulfed in flames. they could see the national guardsman inside wearing military fatigues. they managed to get the door open, cut his seat belt and drag him to safety. just moments later, the truck exploded. another dramatic scene caught on camera in new hampshire. a police officer saved the day. a woman's car caught fire. they were in a gas station right after she pulled up to the pumps and that's when officer kevin baron intervened. he pushed the car away from the pumps. he said he was just doing his job. >> not heroic, more of an instinct that kicked in and got the vehicle out of there. >> baron and his partner grabbed fire extinguishers from their trucks and firefighters arrived just in time to finish the job. all is well that ends well. >> oh, yeah. he was on a routine patrol when he heard the call and decided to go. common sense really if you think about it but a lot of people would have not thought to do that. >> and would have been scared in the process of doing it because you are worried about explosions and this and that. really fantastic. everyone said it could have been worse. >> nobody was hurt. also wonderful. about a dozen people have been given the all clear to colorado, after they were evacuated from flooding worries after an ice dam break. clear creek rose about three feet in just 15 minutes, but a feared four-foot wall of water hitting the canyon never happened. ice dams have been breaking as temperatures continue to rise. it is quite a different story here in the northeast, however, which is bracing for its first sub zero windchills and even more snow. it comes after yesterday's blast that shut down schools, cancelled flights and triggered countless accidents. abc's marci gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: a white slushy mess across much of the northeast. virginia to new england getting a wallop of winter-like weather with as much as seven inches of snow falling in some areas. >> i worked in it 35 years in the show, in the airport. so it was horrible. >> reporter: fred schmitt knows the headaches they were feeling in places like la guardia and kennedy airports all too well. with delays up to an hour and a half there and elsewhere according to flightaware.com. more than 1300 flights cancelled. getting around not much easier on the roads. >> it was like this basically the whole way. as you get closer to new jersey, the roads got worse, so nothing's plowed. >> reporter: from slipping and sliding. >> it's very hard to stop, even with anti-lock brakes. >> reporter: to snow piles blocking traffic. >> by looking it looked fine. after i got up here and stopped i wasn't able to continue. >> reporter: you are stuck? >> so i'm stuck. >> reporter: just the reason government offices in washington, d.c., were closed and so many schools in northeast canceled classes. >> the number one is student safety and staff safety. >> reporter: in chicago, the safety concern was about the extreme cold. the temperature dropping to one below. the coldest it's been this early in the season there in 18 years. >> i used to live in canada and i wonder why i don't live there anymore. >> reporter: oh, i can relate. especially with temperatures dropping here and that could mean an icy dangerous commute for a lot of people later this morning. john and diana, through southern new england, just a little to up to a half foot of snow fell. the burst of beautiful winter transforming tuesday in to a frustrating commute. >> i drove all the way from philadelphia and it was like this basically the whole way. as you get closer to new jersey the roads got worse. nothing's plowed. >> reporter: more than 80 car accidents just in connecticut. hundreds of schools closed. in massachusetts, the slick roads sending this plow crashing through a pole and in to a pond. at dulles international, the parade of plows trying to clear just over two inches. weather has family where the missing family was found alive. they vanished in the mountains after they went out to play in the snow. and after two days of bone-chilling cold hope was fading. amazingly everyone ordered in to therapy. the judge said the teen would not get the help he needs in prison. a georgia woman wants answers after a prank at a home depot store. someone put glue on the toilet seat she used at the store and she was stuck there more than an hour. paramedics eventually freed her but the rescue left her with painful injuries, including ripped skin. she now says she is spending all of hoping for. all six family members are doing well and managed to survive the freezing conditions by burning a tire on their car. celebration and relief in the snowy nevada mountains where two adults and four children under the age of 10 have been found alive after their car overturned, exposing the family to sub-zero temperatures for three days. >> we just followed some tracks going up a road and we found their footprints. >> reporter: 44-year-old james glanton, his girlfriend christina mcintee and their two children and their niece and nephew headed up to the mountains for a fun day in the snow on sunday when their car went down an embankment. rescue teams say they built a fire with a spare tire to stay warm until help arrived. >> they're all great, warm. all the kids are in good spirits. mop and dad were happy to see us. >> reporter: search teams searched the area known for steep ravines by ground and air finding these tire tracks and a cell phone ping which helped them narrow their search. >> the patients are stable. they are doing well. no evidence of frostbite. the father did a good job keeping everybody safe. >> we are happy for the family and glad they have been found and everybody's prayers have been answered. it has been a wonderful thing. the family told one rescuer they could hear search teams blowing whistles at night and hear choppers overhead. a sense of comfort knowing people were looking for them. >> thank you. by the way, 100 well wishers at the hospital. everyone is so relieved to know they are okay. >> a lot of people don't do a thing right. he stayed with the vehicle and that was key. didn't wander off. interesting thing, get this in the back of your head, he heated rocks and brought the rocks in the car and the rocks got so hot it relieved they are okay. >> absolutely. >> a lot of little kids. moving on to this now. a young hunter in central pennsylvania is hospitalized in fair condition this morning. she's recovering from a bear attack. 18-year-old camille bomboy accidentally got between a black bear and her three cubs. the bear bit her on both arms and chest and scratched her head before her father fired shots in the air and was able to scare off the bear. >> heard sister screaming and so i went running, and by the time i got there i heard a couple of gunshots. >> my buddy called and said he needed help. his sister got attacked by a bear. so we grabbed our gun and went up after it. >> reporter: they never did find the bear. while this type of attack is rare, wildlife experts say it is normal behavior for a black bear to attack if someone gets between a mother and her cub. texas woman pleading guilty to sending ricin-laced letters to president obama and new york mayor michael bloomberg. then blaming it on her husband. shannon richardson was facing life in prison, but her attorney says a plea deal would cap her sentence to 18 years. shannon richardson is the mother of six, former actress. she had minor roles in "the walking dead" and "blind side." a budget deal on capitol hill this morning avoiding a government shutdown. the bipartisan compromise restores $63 billion in programs ranging from parks to defense. house and senate negotiators say it will fund the government in to next year and cuts the national debt a little. both the house and senate are expected to vote on it by the end of the week. washington is buzzing about an encounter at the nelson mandela memorial service. president obama's handshake with cuban president raul castro. it happened as he moved down a line of world leaders. the u.s. and cuban leaders have been at odds more than 50 years. during the president's speech where he praised mandela, he also took a sharp jab at dictators like castro. >> there are too many leaders that claim solidarity when madiba struggled for freedom but do not tolerate dissent in their own people. >> some are calling the handshake a propaganda cue for castro. the white house said it was not planned. analysts are not sure if it was more than politeness. the handshake came across the backdrop of the emotional farewell to nelson mandela. his body will lie in state today through friday. it arrived this morning at the union building in pretoria this morning. crowds filled the soweto stadium despite the pouring rain and transportation problem. byron pitts reports the it should not ever be said in the sentence with a 6-year-old. >> reporter: both hunter and his mom jennifer admit he's had some trouble at school in the past. he's been suspended for roughhousing and for kissing the same girl on the cheek. >> we have been working with him with the classroom disruption. he's been grounded for a while. very big restrictions. >> have you been trying to be good at school? >> yeah, but i just have a lot of energy. 6-year-olds, they have a lot of energy. >> reporter: the superintendent at school district re-1 says that hunter's record will remain within the district and that hunter's actions fit the description of sexual harassment. >> how can you do this? >> pumpkin pie layered cake. we start the pumpkin pie layered cake with pumpkin cake. it's super standard cake with cream, butter, sugar, eggs. we add a ton of pumpkin puree. that's the secret. spice, cinnamon, ginger. i stamp my cake rounds out and to minimize the amount of cake scrap we make two half circles and we line it with a piece of plastic that they call acetate. it helps to build the cake. i put my two half circles down on my bottom layer. i'm soaking it with a mixture of milk and heavy cream. that is reminiscent of the flavors of the pumpkin pie filling and then we layer our cake. all of our cakes have three layers of filling. first is a liquid cheesecake filling. wye we start to layer up the cake. all of our takes have three layers of filling. the first filling is like an under baked cheesecake. and we fold brown butter and graham crackers in it to. next is pumpkin seeds and we caramelize them with sugar and salt and roast them in the oven. once those are in place, we do our last spreadable filling which is my favorite, a pumpkin ganache. the first layer is down. and we will do the same thing all over again. ♪ we will decorate with pumpkin pie seeds and pie crumbs that is pumpkin pie crumbs that is like dough instead of rolling out. we whisk the cake away to the freezer and let it freeze two to three hours so that all of the filling will set. amanda, look at our layer cake. we did it. >> oh, my goodness. looks so beautiful. >> right for a holiday celebration. celebration. >> let's do it. ♪ >> patience, diana, patience. read the topic of the facebook question. >> we want to know what is your favorite holiday dessert. log on to wnnfans.com and let us know. >> ladies first. >> yes, please. thank you. >> you want me to take a piece and leave you the cake? >> it happens only on the weekends for us. >> pretty much. shall we get to it? >> let's get to it. >> good news from capitol hill no less. democrats and republicans joining together to prevent another government shutdown for a few more months. >> and it will allow other lawmakers to address health care and benefits programs. abc's karen travers has the story. >> reporter: a rare occurrence on capitol hill on tuesday. lawmakers announcing a budget deal before the deadline. >> senator murray and i have reached an agreement. >> because of this deal, the budget process can start approaching from crisis to crisis. >> reporter: the deal, if agreed to, would mean the government would not shut down for at least two years and eliminate $65 billion in domestic and defense spending cuts known as the sequester and not raise taxes. when it comes to the nuts and bolts, it's a modest proposal. the reason why this is the first budget agreement in two years. partisan bickering has bogged down the process. but it is not a done deal. the house and senate must vote on this agreement and ryan and murray have a tough sell. >> i'm confident we won't have 100% of the senate or house. >> reporter: some republicans don't like the spending increases. some democrats don't like it doesn't include an extension of unemployment benefits. >> i see this agreement as a step in the right direction. in divided government, you don't always get what you want. >> reporter: it was part of the deal that ended the government shutdown in october, but there's been little optimism in washington that murray and ryan would be able to come up with something that could get through the republican-controlled house and the democrat-controlled senate. in a statement, president obama said the agreement doesn't include everything he'd like. republicans feel the same way. the president said this was a good first step. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> there is encouraging news from washington about employment, as well. employers in october advertised the most jobs in more than five years, up 42,000 to near 4 million. more people quit their jobs that month than in five years. more than 2 million. both are signs of increased confidence in the economy. still, there are nearly three potential job seekers for every opening. brief encounter at the nelson mandela memorial service gathering a lot of attention. president obama greeted world leaders and shook the hand of castro. some critics say he shouldn't have done that and others are wondering if it is a signal of thawing relations with cuba. the white house said it was not planned. tens of thousands of people lined the route of nelson mandela's glass coffin as it made its way to lie in state the next three days. south africans were asked to form a guard of honor for the country's first black president. mandela was honored by world leaders and ordinary citizens at the stadium. the mood was joyous despite steady rain. and there was rejoicing in nevada after a missing family was found alive and well two days after they vanished in the mountains. the couple, their two kids and niece and nephew was going to play in the snow when their jeep overturned. they survived in sub zero temperatures by burning a spare tire for heat. rescuers found tire tracks in the snow after picking up a faint cell phone signal. a group of strangers came to the rescue of a group of soldiers risking their lives to pull him from a burning car. several drivers pulled over when they saw a pickup truck engulfed in flames. they could see the national guardsman inside wearing military fatigues. they managed to get the door open, cut his seat belt and drag him to safety. just moments later, the truck exploded. another dramatic scene caught on camera in new hampshire. a police officer saved the day. a woman's car caught fire. they were in a gas station right after she pulled up to the pumps and that's when officer kevin baron intervened. he pushed the car away from the pumps. he said he was just doing his job. >> not heroic, more of an instinct that kicked in and got the vehicle out of there. >> baron and his partner grabbed fire extinguishers from their trucks and firefighters arrived just in time to finish the job. all is well that ends well. >> oh, yeah. he was on a routine patrol when he heard the call and decided to go. common sense really if you think about it but a lot of people would have not thought to do that. >> and would have been scared in the process of doing it because you are worried about explosions and this and that. really fantastic. everyone said it could have been worse. >> nobody was hurt. also wonderful. about a dozen people have been given the all clear to colorado, after they were evacuated from flooding worries after an ice dam break. clear creek rose about three feet in just 15 minutes, but a feared four-foot wall of water hitting the canyon never happened. ice dams have been breaking as temperatures continue to rise. it is quite a different story here in the northeast, however, which is bracing for its first sub zero windchills and even more snow. it comes after yesterday's blast that shut down schools, cancelled flights and triggered countless accidents. abc's marci gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: a white slushy mess across much of the northeast. virginia to new england getting a wallop of winter-like weather with as much as seven inches of snow falling in some areas. >> i worked in it 35 years in the show, in the airport. so it was horrible. >> reporter: fred schmitt knows the headaches they were feeling in places like la guardia and kennedy airports all too well. with delays up to an hour and a half there and elsewhere according to flightaware.com. more than 1300 flights cancelled. getting around not much easier on the roads. >> it was like this basically the whole way. as you get closer to new jersey, the roads got worse, so nothing's plowed. >> reporter: from slipping and sliding. >> it's very hard to stop, even with anti-lock brakes. >> reporter: to snow piles blocking traffic. >> by looking it looked fine. after i got up here and stopped i wasn't able to continue. >> reporter: you are stuck? >> so i'm stuck. >> reporter: just the reason government offices in washington, d.c., were closed and so many schools in northeast canceled classes. >> the number one is student safety and staff safety. >> reporter: in chicago, the safety concern was about the extreme cold. the temperature dropping to one below. the coldest it's been this early in the season there in 18 years. >> i used to live in canada and i wonder why i don't live there anymore. >> reporter: oh, i can relate. especially with temperatures dropping here and that could mean an icy dangerous commute for a lot of people later this morning. john and diana, back to you. >> all right. black ice here in the northeast, the snow yesterday. i'm no meteorologist, but they talk about these patterns that sometimes you get locked in to. it is early in the season and the country is getting hammered with all kinds of stuff. >> this kind of thing when it happens in march we can see the the end of it. oh, spring is coming soon. but we haven't even gotten into winter yet. >> it is not officially started. you are right. >> it hasn't started yet. maybe we will have a white winter. we haven't one of those in sometime in this part of the country. but i can give it up as long as i'm not stuck in my driveway. >> i will go to miami in a heart beat. take manhattan down to
