this congestion westbound side of 580 at 14th avenue. a brand-new accident involving a motorcycle. take a look at the red that just awaits it. that's where we're seeing the bottleneck where all the freeways converge together as they meet the maze. that is where we're seeing most of the traffic. we're also looking at heavy delays here, as well, northbound 880 at winton avenue causing slowing in the northbound direction. southbound also seeing its fair share of delays as folks try to make it over to the san mateo bridge. that's also looking quite a bit slower as well. northbound along 238 out of castro valley, you can see bumper to bumper traffic as well. 580 no exception, several accidents on 580 this morning coming out of tracy into dublin, more than an hour's drive there. if we can go live outside, i want to show you the walnut creek commute, 680 down highway 4 to the junction a 20-minute commute. very busy conditions. we'll keep an eye on it. day two of the b.a.r.t. strike brings longer drive times especially at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's turning into a parking lot again. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard continues our live team coverage from the oakland side. how is it looking? >> reporter: not so good, kristen. after yesterday i thought a lot of drivers would be avoiding the bay bridge. not so. the commute is on. so is the traffic. folks, it's a mess out here. definitely worse than yesterday. cash paying lanes are backed up well into the maze, stop and go and only getting worse. this commute started early, traffic snarling about 4:30. chances are many just got stuck in monday's terrible traffic and decided they didn't want to deal with it so they jumped in their car extra early. fastrak is still your best bet. those lanes are open. they're moving slow, but they are moving. the metering lights are on. caltrans just told me over the phone a few minutes ago extra toll takers are on the job, as many as they could get to work today. but they're not even sure it's going to help because there are so many people converging on the toll plaza. if you have to get into the city, car pool if you can, no waiting in car pool lanes right now. but save out in force looking for car pool violators. the frustration is rampant here. motorists have been yelling their frustrations all morning. some of it we can't repeat. others are telling us how long it took to get here. one driver says it took 2 1/2 hours from pittsburgh, but she was smiling and said, you know what, what can i do. live at the toll plaza, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> thanks, cornell. this morning sbart expanding bus service across the bay as an alternative to its trains. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in pleasanton with more. amy? >> while we are working on getting amy's technical issue, want to pass along she's talking about the b.a.r.t. shuttle service. our vp of programming, david salinger, finally made it into san francisco, started at walnut creek and then to west oakland. took a total of 70 minutes for the trip and yesterday it took 50. it is anecdotal but, you know, adding everything else that we're seeing certainly more people are back on the roads. >> let's continue our live team coverage. abc7 news reporter katie marrzullo is live at jack london square to tell us what the ferry service looks like. >> reporter: looks pretty good out here, eric. what a difference a couple of boats and a few minutes makes. if you take a look, you can see there are no lines right now at jack london square. unbelievable. just a few seconds ago seemed like there were hundreds in line. that large ferry to the right can hold 700 people. it's the third ferry that's leaving for san francisco's embarcardero to the ferry building this morning and they've been kind of waiting and letting everyone run. we've seen a lot of people running and on their bikes to be the last few to fill that up, all the while the first ferry leaving for oyster point for south san francisco has come and gone. so all these hundreds of people that were waiting here have been able to leave for their destinations and we're actually seeing a ferry arrive and people get off here at jack london square. we have pictures from live sky 7-hd. not live. sky 7 hd this morning that shows you how packed the ferries are as they are leaving but they seem to be doing their job.-hd s you how packed the ferries are as they are leaving but they seem to be doing their job. new numbers this morning 18,000 people rode the ferry yesterday system-wide for san francisco, bay ferry. that number would normally be 6,000. what would be 6,000 on a monday, 18,000 yesterday to and from the east bay and san francisco, all the locations, actually. live in oakland, katie marrzullo, abc7 news. >> katie, thanks. so folkse had to of this sos g it's not clear when both sides will get back to the bargaining table. let's begin our live team coverage with abc7 news reporter, transportation reporter heather ishimaru live at lake mira bastation. heather, where is the union and management at right now? >> reporter: well, far apart still, and no talks are scheduled for today, kristen, but that could change. it is early, after all. and also more importantly, perhaps, the atu local 1555 president tells us that the state mediator did call the union last night and just has to follow up and find out what that call was about. while workers are out here on the picket line, these in particular right now taking a little bit of a break, but while the picketers are out, the union's lawyers and negotiating teams have been meeting and working behind the scenes. it's just they're not necessarily working together with the other side since the strike began yesterday morning. atu's negotiating team does have a meeting planned for 11:00 this morning. just to be clear, that is just the atu team meeting alone, not with the district. both sides say they are eager and waiting to get back to the table. it's just a question of what it will take to make that happen. >> we're waiting for the mediator to hopefully reach out to the unions and bring them to the bargaining table. we're ready to negotiate whenever. and as long as necessary. we want to get this started again and get back to service. >> i do know that the mediator called last night. i don't know what the gist of the conversation was. we'll find that out today. i am hope that feel b.a.r.t. will come back to the table. the unions have done everything they can to get a good and fair contract. >> reporter: from the get-go the unions have been saying their top priority, their number-one issue is improved security and safety on the system for both workers and passengers. b.a.r.t. is saying that it has a lot of big financial challenges in the coming years to upgrade and maintain the aging b.a.r.t. system. it's now 40 years old. live at the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station in oakland, heather ishimaru, abc7 news. now to sky 7-hd over oakland this morning. take a look at this. that's a b.a.r.t. train moving, but don't get your hopes up. this is an inspection train, part to of routine maintenance. according to transit agency, b.a.r.t. is running trains to keep tracks from rursing and to make sure the system is ready to go when the strike does come to an end. and this morning, b.a.r.t. is expanding bus service across the bay. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in pleasantson. amy? >> reporter: good morning, eric. i am on board one of your options. this is a bus here in the pleasanton dublin b.a.r.t. station and it's empty. it's waiting for people, waiting to take commuters to the city, if that's where they need to get to. and there are few buses here waiting to take off. i think -- were you going to pull off? don't wait on me. i need to scoot up. i have to be behind the white line. excuse us. we're going to move up in case more people want to ride. this option, though, the window on it is closing. you can only grab one of these buses until 8:00 this morning at the four suburban b.a.r.t. stations here in the east bay where they're available. that's walnut creek, fremont, el cerrito, delnor tay and here in the pleasantson dublin bart station. they did add more buses going into the city, a good thing. it seems to be gaining in popularity. we've met a lot of people today who said they worked from home yesterday but they need to get to the city today. or they drove yesterday and decided they wanted to try the bus today. it is an option. you can grab it at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. that is new today. that's available from 9:00 this morning. if you want to catch it up here in the suburbs, get cracking. you've only got until 8:00 until these buses will be done for the morning. reporting live in pleasanton, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy of course those tickets, some of the b.a.r.t. workers on strike. that's what we saw in the shot. leyla gulen is monitoring the road drive time. >> right now we'll be heading into the east bay. we did a bit of a calculation to see what would be best if you are coming down from highway 4. would it be best if you took the richmond san rafael bridge and brought that through marin county into san francisco in actually, that would take you almost 70 minutes as opposed to just heading from highway 4 all the way down through berkeley to the bay bridge. so even though we are seeing lots of red on this map, we are seeing a quicker drive, about five minutes quicker. so not by much. but if you feel like sitting in traffic while the richmond san rafael bridge is moving along pretty much at top speeds. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza so we can see what we are dealing with. packed conditions out of emeryville. you'll need your sunglasses if you're heading eastbound. busy out there all across the bay area. now with a look at our weather, sun was wuz shining, ikme. going to be hotter today? >> i think so. good morning. still following scattered sprinkles on live doppler 7-hd. may come out of your car on the bay shore, even towards 37, sears point, over towards say novato, a few sprinkles, maybe a few drops still on the car from the earlier morning midlevel showers that moved through. they're gone now. you can see low clouds moving in as we look from future tower off to the east. the big story today, temperatures once again about 12 to 19 degrees above average. so our excessive heat will continue for day five in the north bay. the east bay hills and valleys, the santa clara valley, hills and mountains please be careful. day five means your body is starting to wear down. kristen, eric? >> thank you very much. one of the important services we've been giving you this morning is a traffic eye view of just how bad the delays are this morning without cell 7 technology, engineer dick eppinger driving in it. westbound 80 in the berkeley area. dick, what do you see right now? >> reporter: well, eric, the westbound 80 traffic going past university avenue and berkeley here is moving at about 40 miles an hour, although it is slowing up ahead here. so folks that are moving along here at 40 miles an hour that might think that they've kind of conquered the morning commute are about to slam sloo into a literal traffic wall up here as soon as they get to that final right-hand bend in the road as you approach the san francisco bay bridge toll plaza. the other thing i might add here is the west lanes, which split off and connect to southbound 880 and other routes south are backed up as well. so, you know, b.a.r.t. serves the entire east bay and there are some commuters here that do try to get to points south here in oakland, san leandro, fremont, et cetera. but i am moving along. i'm down to about 30, 35 miles an hour now. traffic is starting to build. but like i said, as soon as i passed emeryville, which is what i'm going to be coming up to here in the next few minutes, well, the traffic is already starting to slow. so i think we're kind of safe to say here as soon as you hit ashby avenue between ashby and powell street it's going to slow down and ultimately you're going to hit that wall as you get on that final curve to the bay bridge toll plaza. >> all right. dick, thanks so much. we'll check back with you in a little bit. abc morning news continues with complete coverage of the bath strike. sky 7-hd showing folks waiting for the ferries there at the ferry terminal. folks getting on and heading out this morning. we've seen the ferries leave like this one and coming in and that he ear frilled to the brim. we'll be 7:16. you'd normally be watching "good morning america," but the b.a.r.t. strike is on and we're covering it for you. the traffic is backed up and cell 7 keeps showing us just how slow things are out there. and as we take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza on one side and on the other side, one of the ferries leaving jack london square in the bay heading into the city, it is filled to the brim with people, as the ferries have been all morning. extra ferries and lots of people. >> it is sardine-like. look at that. westbound commute on cell 7 once again trying to get to the bay bridge toll plaza, going through the emeryville area on 80, and it is very slow. going about 35 miles per hour, looks to be more now more like 20. if you're car pool lanes, you're doing better. the bay bridge toll plaza on the right, the lanes on the left where the cars are moving swiftly, those are the car pool lanes. you need three people. if you don't have three, you will get a ticket and that's about $400 or so. the lines have been periodic at a.c. transit bus hubs in downtown oakland. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live with now a.c. transit officials are responding today. >> reporter: discouraging news. a bus just pulled up. people were excited to get on it and get to san francisco. but then the bus was full. you can see how far the line extend. all the way down 20th street here, all the way down to broadway, around the corner. this is a line as long as any line we saw yesterday. so, yes, it's busier earlier here this morning. many people i spoke with earlier told me that they were here yesterday and their experience was somewhat positive. the commute took a long time, less time than they expected, and so they came back. an a.c. transit worker said there were three buses an hour here instead of the normal two. we saw a vip shuttle bus come here as well, picked up a whole bunch of people and bring them about a half hour ago to san francisco. this last bus, disappointing, only a few people able to get on. many were giving themselveses two hours to get into work this morning bug as we've been hearing from the roads this morning, things are not going well out there and people will be less optimistic getting into work. they may be giving themselves a little extra time. matt keller, abc7 news. >> thanks a lot. this morning the city of san francisco is using city signs to help drivers find a place to park if they drove in. right now the signs are lit up along the embarcardero. each gives you information about the location of available parking garages in the city and the number of open spaces. normally the city uses the signs to update drivers about traffic on the embarcardero or to give giants games updates. 7:19. time for a check on traffic. leyla gulen has been monitoring the entire bay area. what do you have for us? >> first of all, shuttle buses at four b.a.r.t. stations are no longer able to transport passengers this morning. that would be el se reto, del nortee, fremont, because they were supposed to run until 8:00 this morning, but those are no longer available. west oakland will run until 8:00 a.m. hopefully they'll still be able to take some passengers. we have some accidents causing some insult to injury. as we take you into oakland, west bound 508 at 14th avenue, an accident involvinging a motorcycle. 12 miles per hour making that merge at the maze. here's mike nicco with the weather. good morning. >> good morning to you, leyla. all the work you've been putting in this morning. i'm going to do the same weather-wise. visibilities still a half-mile, half moon bay, a lot of cloud cover along the coast and low levels. the rest are mid and upper levels. a hazy di dey but not a spare the air day. the air conditioners ran all night in some areas. low 70s except for san ramon at 69, concord at 64. so you go up in elevation, we have temperatures hanging out in the 70s. it's even in the 80s in the higher elevations of los gatos right now. low to mid-60s along the bay shore. cool 59, san francisco, 55 at half moon bay. you can see from our east bay hills cam the sun is out and it's going to be hazy sunshine with more heat today. dangerous heat through at least thursday. i think we'll have a couple more days of triple digits in our east bay valleys, probably seven in a row. but it will become more manageable, the warmth, this weekend. temperatures in the south bay over 100 morgan hill, 102, 102 los gatos, mid to upper 90s elsewhere like 96 in san jose. all these 90s on the peninsula today. 85 in millbrae, low 70s along the coast, a little more cloud cover than yesterday. near 80 in downtown and south san francisco. sausalito, 85. you head up to your beaches, low 70s. head inland, almost 30 degrees warmer, upper 90s to near 100 degrees. quite a spread on the east bay shore from 85 at berkeley to about 93 in fremont, castro valley, 96 in hercules. check out all the 100-degree temperatures in the east bay valley. tonight we'll be in the 60s again and some 70s hanging on in the east bay valleys. 50s along the coast in san francisco with low clouds again. your accuweather seven-day forecast, thur, independence day, day seven of 100 degrees, final day. we'll be in the 80s that day, 60s at the coast. look at the temperatures finally taper back to normal for saturday and sunday. here's kristen and eric. >> thanks, mike. 7:21. >> continuing coverage as the b.a.r.t. strike here. but first as we go to break, live pictures of folks lining up for the ferry on the alameda side. look at this. it is incredible. look how farther backed up. >> oh, my gosh. they're trying to avoid having to drive cross the bay. that is a long line. the reason they're trying to avoid is it is look at this, the bay bridge toll plaza is so backed up today, even worse than yesterday. on the left, a shot of the cash-paying lanes and on the right our cell 7 dick epstein, our engineer who's been bringing you these traveling live reports trying to make his way to the bay br good morning. it's. :24. you are looking at a live picture of the huge line waiting to get on a ferry. this is in alameda. okay. we're going to pull out just so you can see that snake of people winding it way to the dock to where that ssa ferry is going to take some of the lucky people over to san francisco. but, yeah, even though they tripled the capacity, 18,000 passengers they plan to carry today, you can see those spots may be precious and hard to get because of what's happening with the b.a.r.t. strike. >> and the reason people are lined up at the ferry is because of the backup on the roads. let's go right now to cell 7, our engineer dick epstein in the bay bridge toll plaza traffic, which is stop and go, especially in the cash-paying lanes. dick, you must be the most patient man behind the wheel because you've been in this several times this morning. >> yes. i'm getting used it to now, eric. i can tell you one thing, i just came in on highway 80 from the berkeley area, and that wasn't too bad of a ride. we were doing about 30 miles an hour, until we get to that last curve just before you come onto the approach going to the toll plaza here, that last three quarters of a mile to a mile which is what i'm in right now, probably about 1,000 feet or so prior to the toll plaza. it looks like it could be moving a little better than it was a half hour or 45 minutes ago, but it's still bumper to bumper. the other thing i can tell you is all the other feeders, the highway 880, the highway 24, that all merge in here going to the toll plaza, i'm looking up at those ramps, the overpasses. they're just a parking lot. the traffic is barely moving if it's moving at all. the other thing interesting i'm seeing here, it's kind of a spin-off of people being stuck in traffic. a lot of people are using their cell phones, texting and maybe sending emails to work, letting them know they're going to be late, that type of thing. but save is out here in force with motorcycle officers going between the cars. it's still a mess here at the toll plaza. eric? >> all right, dick. thank you very much. 7:27. >> in addition to the car pool violations we might see some cell phone tickets as well. right? let's check things out with leyla gulen. you're looking at that backup and the drive time extending farther and farther. >> unless of course they're hands free. we want to make sure they're hands free. we are seeing lots of backup and a few accidents that really don't make things any better. if you look at our drive time traffic right now, westbound 580 out of tracy to dublin, 73 minutes will get you there, 24 is a parking lot, as well, 50 minutes out of walnut creek to 580. 80 to the maze, a 36-minute drive. we have mass transit delays. b.a.r.t.'s not working but the train 527 from sacramento to san jose about a 30-minute delay there. >> thank you. >> and abc morning news will be right back with our breaking news coverage of b.a.r.t.'s strike, day two. of course that breaking news revolves around the b.a.r.t. strike. you're looking live in the east bay. this incredible line of people waiting to catch a ferry because, well, the roads are just so backed up. i believe wayne freedman said yesterday he saw a quarter mile backup of people waiting for the ferry. this could be bad today. >> all right. well, it is getting worse as folks decide they can't stay home a second day. right now we want to check in with leyla gulen, who's monitoring stall road conditions. there's some bad news coming from b.a.r.t., too, for passengers hoping to use their shuttles. >> absolutely right, kristen. in fact, let me tell you exactly what's going on with that. shuttle buses at four b.a.r.t. stations no longer able to transport passengers. that would include el cerrito, walnut creek, dublin, and fremont. they were filled to capacity before 7:00. supposed to run until 8:00 a.m. this morning. that is not going to be an option for a lot of people who are depending on a way to get to work this morning. besides that, we're seeing lots of traffic, so if you're heading along 80, anything along the east bay is absolutely packed out there. kristen, eric? >> thank you very much, leyla. a live look from the bay bridge toll plaza. actually, it's not. >> it looks like picketers are out there this morning all over the place, including on oakland on this day two of the strike. with no new talks scheduled at this point. that is bad news for commuters who are hoping there will be a quick resolution to this. that is not the case right now. you'll see live pictures of the bay bridge toll plaza, cash-paying lanes very slow, just a crawl. closer to us, on the lower side of the screen, that's the car pool, and those lanes are still zipping by. you do need three people for that. >> even the fastrak lanes are slow right now. right now, cell 7, abc7 news engineer dick ep speen has been on the road all morning long, been in this traffic jam several times this morning and it is stop-and-go traffic there. this is cell 7 technology showing you live with's going on. a few minutes ago he said he might be a thousand feet from the toll plaza. he might have inched a few feet closer. >> right now a live look from the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. station where many people boarded shuttle because busts this morning to try to take that. the west oakland station and from there to san francisco. due to overwhelming demand, the shuttle stopped carrying passengers. we were hearing that from leyla gulen a few minutes ago. now you see a bus pulling away. dublin pleasanton is one of the place where is they're just at capacity. service was scheduled to continue until 8:00. and this is a live look at 28th and broadway in oakland where people are waiting to get onto a.c. transit buses for the ride into san francisco. abc7 news reporter matt keller tells us lines are longer today than yesterday, but there is more frequent service. however, last time we heard from matt, a bus had pulled up and it was near capacity. they only took a couple more riders on before leaving. they put on extra buses, three an hour instead of the normal two. unlike b.a.r.t., a.c. transit buss are still running even though no new contract was forged. >> a bit of a wait for the ferries. that would be an understatement. take a look at the picture from the lake merit area. actually, this is jack london square, where we have that sfa terminal. another long line forming there. people saying it takes about 30 minutes to get onto a ferry. no free parking for the ferries during the duration of the b.a.r.t. strike. be sure to buy your ticket before you get in line to board the ferry. >> 6,000 passengers today, 18,000. live at lake merit b.a.r.t. station. you see some workers picket eing there. no negotiations scheduled at this time between the union and b.a.r.t. the union rep says they are waiting for to present a better offer before they return to the table. >> we'll have updates on the strike throughout the morning for you. you can also find all of this the information you need on strike on our website, abc7news.com. >> and be sure to follow us on twitter @abc7newsbayarea to get the latest on the b.a.r.t. talks. >> also follow the breaking news on our abc7 news app and the latest traffic information with our exclusive waze traffic app to help you navigate the freeways during this difficult time. >> we'll be back here in about 20 minutes with news, weather, and traffic during "good morning america." >> b.a.r.t. strike. >> a wit of a wait getting on. been on the bus since 6:30. it's 8 croc right now. >> plan ahead with abc7 news. service update, commuter tips and and the day after. >> i want to ask you about chris serino, again, the lead investigator. back on the stand today. could he still help the prosecution's case? >> well, this is now the cross-examination of serino. it's hard to figure out exactly how he is suddenly going to change and help the prosecution's case. i mean, look. parts of what he says are helpful. the problem is, when you look at the big picture and you look at him in conjunction with the other witnesses who have testified, he does seem to help the defense more than he does the prosecution. >> the day to watch. dan abrams, in sanford, as well. thank you, dan. >> he'll be there anchoring for "nightline," as well. now, to the brazen heist straight out of a hollywood blockbuster. this one, armed bandits, hijacking a boat, making off with $1.5 million. nick watt has more on this made for the movies caper. >> reporter: the 1,600-year-old city of venice has never seen anything like it. apart from "the italian job." but that was a movie. this brazen heist played out on those same, beautiful canals. 7:00 a.m. monday morning, armed men on a vessel pulled up to a small boat just loaded with three boxes of money. one robber pulls out a rifle, telling a security guard that a robbery is under way. a masked accomplice who was hiding under a tarp, jumps onboard the money boat and opens all three cases. grabs the two cases of the bank notes and puts them on the speedboat. leaving behind one case full of coins. the men disappeared with $1.7 million in cash that was supposed to pay the pensions of elderly venetians. >> robbers do watch movies. and they do get ideas about how to do things. >> reporter: just last week, in a "goodfellas"-esque, escapade, money disappeared from a cargo container. and one that will inspire a movie, this high-stakes smash and grab in a london mall last november. motorcycle bandits disappeared with 3 million bucks worth of rolex and cartier watches. they're still on the run. and late last night, smash and grab thieves stole $500,000 worth of jewelry from the borgata hotel and casino in new jersey. >> a lot of times they spend the money in a fashion to get caught. >> reporter: back in venice, the cops are still scratching their heads. those robbers left no trace, or a tire mark. and they're not robbers, they're pirates. for "good morning america," nick watt, abc news, los angeles. >> are they pirates? they must be. we're going to go back to the east coast. this has been a season of stuck weather patterns. when you get into the east coast of wet and flooding, it doesn't seem to want to go away. other pictures came out of the carolinas, showing how much rain had fallen there. 14 states, from florida to new hampshire. it's really a problem. it continues again today. the idea that we'll back drier air in for the end of the week and hopefully start to get a drier pattern for the coastline. it's an idea right now. look at boston friday. we're taking you up to the 90s. philly, as well. that's a good sign we're getting sunshine in here. new york city, into the 90s. washington, d.c., as well. in the four-day plan, trying to break up that rainy pattern on the eastern seaboard, not much is going to happen with the dry block on the west, until we get moisture moving from the east texas area to new mexico and back into the desert. hopefully we'll good morning. i'm mike nicco. we'll hazy sunshine once again but not a spare-the-air day. temperatures stretch from 72 at half moon bay, 86 in san francisco, 86 in oakland, 96 in san jose, near 100 >> all that weather was brought to you by target. i like sea-tac, at about 80 degrees. a little cooler in
