[ laughter ] >> you have the most beautiful head of hair in the world. >> keep on digging, lara. >> oh! i am crying already. >> she only meant that this the nicest way, george. >> yeah, i know. >> i love you, george. >> oh, no. >> okay. >> we will transition. >> yes, you're going to leave the set. we're going to turn to the murder trial that's been going on in phoenix, the jodi arias murder trial. the prosecutor has been using a bizarre strategy using a fairy tale "snow white and the seven dwarfs" and different interpretations to try to discredit an expert witness for jodi arias on the stand. we'll talk with dan abrams and nancy grace all live in a moment but first ryan owens with the latest that's going on in court. >> reporter: "snow white and the seven dwarfs." it might be the last thing you would expect to hear about in a brutal murder trial. but this is the jodi arias case. and nothing, it seems, is off limits. prosecutor juan martinez is using the fairy tale to try to discredit the witness. >> you have a bias just by this minor example, don't you? >> no, i do not. >> reporter: alyce laviolette is a domestic violence expert whether snow white showed symptoms of being an abused woman. >> even though you never spoke to anybody involved in the "snow white tale," correct? >> i didn't speak to the snow white or seven dwarfs. >> reporter: laf owe -- laviolette says arias was abused by travis alexander. the man she shot and repeatedly stabbed in june 2008. this is vital to arias. martinez says she is making it up and accuses the expert of trusting of word of an admitted liar along with text e-mails. >> ultimately what you're saying is that you are a human lie detector, right? >> gosh, i didn't think i was saying that, mr. martinez. >> reporter: juror number 5 who was thrown off the jury last week for misconduct was not in court monday, but she was still front and center. she caused a stir on thursday after showing up just to watch, which prompted the judge to ask the remaining jurors this on monday morning. >> has juror number 5 contacted any of you since she was excused? please raise your hand. i see no responses. >> reporter: laviolette will be back on the stand this morning. later this week she'll face the questions that might matter most, those from the jurors who could decide if jodi arias lives or dies. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, phoenix. >> more now from our legal team nancy grace host of hln's "nancy grace" joins us again and our abc legal analyst dan abrams. thank you both for joining us. what is the prosecutor martinez trying to do being so tough? >> i'm having a hard time making out what you're saying, i think you asked what is martinez trying to do with laviolette on the stand? i would like to point out that i have been watching the jury questions piling up and piling up. they're going to have their way with laviolette before it's over. something very disturbing came out yesterday at the very end of trial. we found out yesterday that jodi arias has written a manifesto of sorts and has been signing it to cash in on her notoriety, quote, if she should become famous. we also learned that jodi arias was very excited about her i.q. test behind bars because she thinks that it equals the i.q. of albert einstein. i've got a problem with that. >> well, look, the prosecutor has a ton of ammunition here to use with this witness, which to go to your question, begs the question, why is he often yelling at this witness? [ cheers and applause ] >> all right. let's go back inside to george. >> thank you, elizabeth. we turn to jane fonda's adopted daughter, a daughter most of us didn't even know about. mary williams is telling her story in "the last daughter" and later a famous family and finding success on her own. juju chang sat down with mary and jane for a rare interview. >> reporter: she's a hollywood legend from an acting dynasty. >> it seems like you and me have been mad at each other for so long. >> i didn't think we were mad. i thought we just didn't like each other. >> i want to be your friend. 46 >> reporter: who won one of her two oscars for "coming home." >> it's very scary for me. >> not going to like the fact that i've changed. i have changed. >> reporter: she was known for her radical politics then evolved into an exercise empress. >> three, four, five, six. >> reporter: but if you think you know all there is to know about jane fonda, you're wrong. in addition to her two biological children, she has another daughter, mary williams. >> last time we walked, it was the first time you walked since surgery. >> reporter: theirs is a complicated mother/daughter relationship, one that began as a friendship, one that mary williams lays out in her new memoir "the last daughter." the two first met at a summer camp in santa barbara, california, that jane jane ran with her then husband politician and activist tom hayden. >> when she showed up at camp you could tell that she was a special person and she came back for several years, and then she didn't come back. >> reporter: mary grew up poor in oakland, california. her family belonged to the black panthers. politically active, but in such a tough neighborhood eventually began to swallow her up a victim of sexual assault at age 14. >> this is a hugely smart person but she was failing. i said if you bring your grades up by the end of the year and live your mother permits you, i'll make sure you go to school in santa monica and live with us. >> i literally felt like i was dying. irreally did, and when i saw that opportunity, i ran. i ran for it. >> reporter: the inner city kid from oakland took the life line and suddenly found herself living in a beautiful home in santa monica, the child of a screen legend, culture shock. >> i had no idea. i had no idea that at the time i was going to end up married to ted turner and my black daughter would end up sitting at a table in the black plantation, the only black person at the table. >> reporter: mary was a quick study merging her old family values to new ones. in her book she eloquently explains how these vastly different worlds were not so dissimilar after all. >> the black panthers, the fondas and turners are as different as families can be, but there was one thing in common. they were not shy of acting on their beliefs. all in the spirit of trying to make the world a better place. >> reporter: but mary could never shed her tortured past and it was threatening her present mother/daughter relationship. >> i was slowly realizing i was alienating myself from people and the fact that i did it to the person who i loved the most in the world wide world made me realize i was in crisis. >> she just said the person she loved the most in the world wild world. >> don't say that again, i'll start crying. isn't that beautiful? >> well, you are. >> reporter: what makes you emotional about that? >> love. i mean, is there anything else that matters in life? >> reporter: mary threw herself into work helping others. she taught english and worked for the u.n. in morocco and lent a hand in rural tanzania and helped lost boys in the sudan and hiked the appalachian trail and biked across the u.s. and conducted research in apartment arca conquering her fears but running away also. she was running away from the anger she felt towards her biological mother, and jane was by her side when she went in search of her. >> it was a wild experience. the three of us went to lunch and me, white, privileged, movie star and this woman who has had a really rough life. she didn't seem to be angry or she didn't seem to be resentful. she has a good sense of humor. i found out where mary gets her laugh. >> is it an overstatement to say jane fonda saved your life? >> it is not an overstatement at all. she doesn't know how amazing she has been and what she has done. >> reporter: for "good morning america," i'm juju chang in hollywood, california. >> what a fascinating and beautiful story. now, sam has a final check on the weather. >> george, i just want to make sure if you come to times square to hang out with us on "good morning america," we want to get you on tv. gentlemen, we've been hanging out during those past couple of stories. tell me your name. >> nick. >> and? >> rohan. >> where are you from? >> from washington. >> i love the sign. i saw you out busy this morning just drawing on it. there's too much on that sign to read. we only have a little bit of time left. we'll get to the boards and start with your twitter and facebook pictures, nebraska, hailstones on the ground and also what do we have, d.c. cherry blossoms, yep, looking good. how long will they last when the temperatures are going near 90 degrees and concerned about that hot red zone and long line storms lining up from des moines all the way to austin, but it looks like in those supercell storms, they can deliver thunderstorms. they move eastern during the day tomorrow. >> we live in >> we are live in times square going back inside to -- >> all: george. >> thank you, guys. we have a lot coming up right here. >> there they are. jason bateman and paula patton here live. ♪ ♪ great shot outside and inside we have -- it is so much better because jason bateman and paula patton is here to tell us about "disconnect." it's a film about staying connected in the wired world. here's a look. >> all you would have had to do is click on a link and he would have installed a trojan virus on to your system. now, once he does this, he can do anything he wants with your computer. you log on, you punch in your passwords. it comes up on his screen. everything you do, he can see. he can turn on your camera. he can watch you. >> so happy to have them here. jason and paula, two of the stars of the film and there are so many different story lines. you guys actually don't intersect and i don't want to give too much away. this feels like a thriller. i want to start with you, paula. your character is going through a lot and the victim of identity theft. >> yes. >> what drew you to this. >> it was the script. a script i could not put down because it is a thriller and as you watch the movie, you do not foe what's going to happen. >> no. >> and there's a surprise at every turn. that's what the first thing, you always want to be in a good film and like the challenge of playing cindy. like nobody i played before. she's grieving, in love with her husband but her husband is detached from her. >> disconnected. >> well done. >> i get that. >> i heard what you did. >> you'll hear it a couple more times. i'll get it in there almost every sentence. >> it runs in threes. we have two more left. >> a challenge. >> then it was my desire to connect with alex skarsgard so i tried -- oh, well, then our director was somebody that already had watched this film and got nominated for an oscar. >> this is his first -- >> yeah, narrative, fiction. >> into fiction. was that appealing to you? >> it's appealing to be asked -- it's appealing to be -- to work, period, okay. let's -- the fact that -- >> made a really good movie ace bonus. >> this gig this morning is paying pretty well too. i get free water. you know, it's a drama. i don't get asked to do dramas that often and the fact that she was in it. >> yeah. >> henry was directing and that the script was so great was all sort of gravy. >> your character is a disconnected lawyer. >> you're at two. >> thank you very much. >> you don't piggy back on. >> all right. >> there's room for all of us but, seriously, this is such a departure. your last role in "identity thief" same topic -- >> this one is less funny. >> but you can't look away from the film. do you like going from the comedy -- >> in a perfect world you get to do a little of each but again you need to be asked so hopefully people like this and i'll get asked for. >> the concept of this picture and just the fact, do you ever really know who you're communicating with online? that was something i kept thinking about as the movie -- even though there are all these stories that are all connected, were disconnected in -- >> you're good now. >> i got it? but it is really a terrifying concept. parents, was that something that you wanted to explory >> that's tough. something that i'm going to need to kind of work on my speech. i have my birds and bees speech down ten years earlier than i need it but now i need to get into technology speech. >> this is riveting and fantastic and you're both great in it. thanks for coming in and connecting with us. >> that was good. i liked that one. >> thanks very much. everybody, "disconnect" is out in select theaters on friday, and it is terrific. coming up master chef daniel humm is here with his magic. ♪ everyone is here. we're back with daniel humm, master chef of 11 madison. you know him as well. he's here to bring a few select dishes from his new cookbook "i love new york ingredients and recipes." happy to have you back. as we prepare a delicious breakfast sandwich, i want to ask, this is a great book because it's actually about the traditions of the urban gardens and really the ingredients we can get right here. >> you know, it's called "i love new york" and it's really focused on the farmers and products of new york, but it's really more about the spirit that the book is. it's about really paying attention when you buy the ideas and also luxury is not just, you know, the expensive things like caviar and wild salmon but can be carrots or asparagus. >> it's a really good egg. it's a really good piece of cheese. the this is beautiful. >> egg in a hole. basically a crook. what we have is country ham, gre gruyere cheese. >> ham and cheese sandwich and something you can kind of do with your kids. >> it's kind of fun. >> we'll let that cook until -- >> for about two minutes. >> want the egg still to be runny so it runs out. >> sam, elizabeth, so, tell me again. they're not talking. they're doing something else -- >> it's so good. >> perfect for breakfast. i know it can be a great lunch. we have it here with an asparagus salad and quinoa. >> and heirloom -- >> he grows about 50 different ones and when you taste them they're so sweet and earthy and just incredible. >> you're a master chef, we mentioned. what did you learn putting this book together? >> i learned that, you know, we as chefs, we train all about the technique, i guess that's one part but it's just as much about the ingredients than about the technique and the really -- it starts with the farmer. it's the full circle and really have to pay attention to the full circle and can't start when it's in the kitchen. >> the quinoa and the carrots. >> they've ruined or you ruined car yachts for me. that's not the carrot you get in the grocery store and just sweet and -- >> oh, that -- >> it doesn't sound like air and -- >> yes. you got to try this here. >> so amazing. >> yeah, that -- you see the egg there. >> oh, daniel. >> so is this polite to do on tv?
