teams of investigators invaded the home of wade michael page late sunday, searching for any clues to explain his deadly rampage. authorities tell abc news, page was a hawk missile system repairman in the army and then a psychological operations specialist may have been a white supremacist. police say the shooting began at 10:30 sunday morning as many inside the temple were gathering for worship. the first shots came from outside as page enter the building and opened fire. inside, mayhem, as horrified members of the temple, hitting closets. sheltering the children from spraying bullets. that's when this man got a call from inside the temple. >> they called me from my dad's phone. my dad's shot on the ground. and my mom is hiding in the closet right now. she's hyper scared and saying the people are still in there. >> reporter: he later learned his father, the temple president, was among the four killed inside. >> he died defending the rest of the people. so he lives to his words. >> reporter: wade michael page was also killed by a police officer outside after he ambushed another officer trying to help a victim. >> because of the heroic actions of our officer, they stopped this from being worse than it could have been. >> reporter: in and outside of the temple, however, confusion continued. police received so many calls for help, they initially feared there was a second gunman. >> it's believed that the reports of multiple shooters were likely reports of the same shooter from different perspectives. >> reporter: when it was finally over, those inside were brought to this local bowling alley. to grieve and meet with investigators. >> they are so scared. still, i can tell the fear on the face, and they just said thank god we're just alive. >> reporter: the sikh faith is not connected to islam. but the two are often confused. the sikhs have been targeted since september 11th. authorities on the ground here now are trying to figure out if all of this was motivated by hate. george. >> thanks, alex. >> for more, we turn to oak creek chief of police and the mayor. thank you both for joining us this morning. i know this is a hectic and harrowing time. chief edward, let me begin with u-we heard alex say you're investigating whether or not this is a hate crime. what more can you tell us about the motive of the killer? >> that, i'm not aware of. that mate be accurate, but i'm not aware of that myself. i don't have that information. >> no information on the tattoos. how about the weapon? >> we're dealing with a handgun. we're not dealing with a rifle. a handgun had been recovered at the scene and it had been turned over to evidence techs from the fbi who have that in their possession at this time. >> do you know how much planning went into it? >> that, i have no idea. we're doing interviews of neighbors and what not. we're trying to piece together his whereabouts and what happened in the last 24 hours prior to that. we don't have all of that information, hopefully we'll have more of that later this morning. >> and what more can you tell us about the police officers and the condition of the injured officer? >> the injured officer, the last status that i got, was he was in two surgeries. he had his last surgery last night. got out of surgery about 11:30 our time. he's resting comfortably with his family. he received between eight and nine gunshot wounds to his extremities, and also to the cheek area and the neck. >> eight or nine?
