It was a busy day yesterday as storms turned into severe weather. Several funnel clouds and tornadoes were spotted across eastern iowa. The National Weather Service Reports a brief tornado touchdown that happened in Hardin County triggering warnings in grundy, butler, tama, bremer and marshall counties. A tornado was also reported near Grundy Center in grundy county. While it does sound strange to talk about tornado touchdowns in november, they happen in iowa more often than you think. The National Weather Service Tells Us 41 tornados have touched down in november here in iowa over the last 35 years. But more than half of those fell on just two days. Last year, 19 touched d iowa on november 11th. And another dozen hit iowa during an outbreak in 2005. One tornado touched down near iowa states campus in ames, forcing an evacuation of the cyclones football game. And a deadly f3 tornado struck the town of woodward. One person was killed and three others injured when this tornado ripped through the tiny town of stratford. And dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed in nearby woodward. Breaking overnight dozens are presumed dead including nearly an entire team of johnson is at the breaking news desk with the story. Stephanie what happened . A judge is now considering the evidence in the trial of a former cedar rapids substitute teacher accused of sexually exploiting a student. Mary beth haglins trial began yesterday morning but there is no testimony in this case because both sides agreed to whats called a means a judge will review all the facts and render a verdict. Yesterday, the judge reduced the charge against haglin back to an aggravated misdemeanor. Thats likely due to the fact that nothing from haglins appearance on the doctor phil show will factor into the ruling. Instead, judge Kevin Mckeever will take into account only the Child Protection Center Interview with the victim and haglins interview with police. I will proceed in that fashion, i will consider the evidence that has been agreed upon by the parties, i will whether or not you are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt based on that evidence. Haglin told us that the relationship with a 17yearold was consensual. If found guilty, she faces a maximum of two years behind bars. We should have a verdict in this case in the next month. New information right now about a a deadly car crash over the weekend. Cedar Rapids Police tell us 21yearold Martell Watson and 22yearold kaitlyn hallstougartboth of cedar on i380 downtown. Two officers were injured and taken to the hospital but they have been released. Those officers were responding to an earlier crash that was blocking the southbound lanes of 380 near the 1st avenue exit when watson lost control and slammed into their car. The states Chronic Absenteeism Advisory Council have now finished their recommendations to the governor. Educators and state officials are planning to recommend to the legislature a standard definition of what chronic absenteeism is. They decided it should mean missing ten percent or more of the school days in a year. They also hope the state will create a campaign to promote good attendance. Aligning on common definition was a foundational component that we heard throughout the chronic absenteeism council so getting clarity on the issue and what we mean when we talk will really be the bedrock of this work moving ahead. Other recommendations include creating an Advisory Group to study how iowa schools can better communicate with families on combatting repeated absences. Students in Johnson County are preparing for their peace gathering tomorrow. At 4 30 in the afternoon parking lots at kirkwood elementary and north west junior high will be full of students, staff and community members. Theyre hoping hot chocolate and conversation can spread the message of peace and unity communities. An initiative in Johnson County thats harvesting thousands of pounds of food for people in need is asking for your help. Grow Johnson County used the countys historical poor farm to help local hunger relief organizations last summer. Volunteers grew 12 thousand pounds of fruits and vegetables there in the first growing season. And we put that into kind of a big database and we donors with the families who have applied. Ackman says there are between 500 to 600 families in need and so far only 162 donors. I know sometimes a lot of donors think, you know, is this in my budget for the Holiday Season . and you know, if you go online, there is a, you know, question, how many families would you like to adopt . and then what is the maximum size of individuals per family that youd like to adopt . ackman estimates donors spend between 100 and 200 dollars on gifts when experience the outcome is worth a little income. Just the fact that youre kind of making that effort and adopting them and providing them with something for the Holiday Season its a really big, you know, its a really big deal for those families. Friends and family of the victim jeremie mitchell, are demanding that Police Release the dash cam video of the traffic stop and shooting that they say left mitchell paralyzed. State regulators say agencies . Can release video during an the way linn county attorney Jerry Vander Sanden reads the rules. He believes the law requires him to keep the footage private while the investigation is underway. Now, governor branstad says lawmakers should review that policy. But if theres ambiguity or if theres areas that need to be clarified then it may require legislative action. We now know it was a teen who was shot in waterloo sunday night. Police say it happened on kern street sunday night. The waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports 17yearold Tyran Collins was shot multiple times. An hour after the shooting police surrounded a suspects were found. Last year, lawmakers gave the okay for First Responders to carry the drug so they could stop an overdose while out on a call. It also allows those at risk for an opiod overdose to be prescribed the drug and family members or friends to assist in giving it. Naloxone is given as a nasal spray or department is once again asking state leaders for money to better prepare for potential animal diseases like bird flu. Bill northey says his request for half a Million Dollars would go toward training for livestock farmers. He made this same request one year ago.
