Governor Terry Branstad is now the longestserving governor in us history. History. He earned that distinction yesterday. And during his time in office, hes seen a lot happen in iowa politics. Politics. Cbs 2 News Reporter kevin barry reports on whats the same and whats different. Different. When Terry Branstad first became governor in 1983, he was the youngest in iowas history at 36 years old. He says back then setting records for being in office a combined 21 years was the farthest thing from his mind. Was that the plan back in 1982 . No. I had no clue this would happen. In fact i didnt even know what the record was when i ran the first time back then, branstad was the Lieutenant Governor and was just as surprised as everyone else when robert ray decided to not run for governor again. He says he wanted to be in in eighth grade he majored in Political Science at iowa and became the Lieutenant Governor at 31. But as soon as he won the states top Office Challenges he ever would. The farm crisis in the 80s. And we closed 38 banks. Land values dropped 63 percent but we worked to diversify the economy. Over time he says thats worked and helped turn a 90 Million Dollar deficit that he inherited in 1983 into a huge surplus by the time he left in 1999. Its important because businesses look to invest in states that are well managed. He says other states right now have issues like large unfounded pension systems making the outlook for the whole state bleak. In iowa i like to say things are good and theyre getting better. Funeral arrangements are now set for the High School Senior visitation for mod sed will take place at Waterloo First United Methodist Church this sunday from 1 to 4. An official cause of death has not been determined. A marengo man is dead following a headon crash with a semi late this morning near amana. The iowa state patrol says 43yearold johnny wayne bagwell, junior, crossed the center line on highway 151. The roadway had to be shut down for several hours following the crash. And those struggling with sleep apnea who cant use the proper treatment could have another take vo sleep apnea starts out with symptoms like chronic snoring or uncontrolled breathing. Dr. Scott geisler with the physicians clinic of iowa says the traditional treatment is the cpap machine or a dental device. But now the hospital has a minnesotabased sleep therapy. Its called the inspire therapy and patients can ask about it if the cpap or any other traditional treatment fails. The company says a patients body mass index needs to be below 32 and Insurance Companies are still reviewing this on a case bycase basis. Sot sot this is a pacemaker like battery that is under the skin, surgically placed there, and instead of wires going down to the heart muscle, the wires go up towards the neck and are wrapped around the nerves.
