Reporter Koichi Watanabe is taking a journey with his wife. He recently turned 80 and hes been reflecting back on his life. Translator i remember a lot of things, regrettable things, painful things. Reporter watanabe lives in beijing and has a chinese name. He has come to the province where he lived with his japanese family during the war. This is the first time he has returned. It was formerly a part of manchuria. Watanabe was 5 years old when he arrived with a group of settlers from japan. His parents worked very hard to create their land. They finally saved enough money to buy horses and cows, then their lives took a devastating turn. His father was drafted into the japanese army. He later went missing. Soon after, russian soldiers killed his mother. He and his siblings were separated. A chinese couple took watanabe in and later adopted him. He says they raised him as if he was their own child. They helped me when i had nowhere to go. They took very good care of me. I remember everything. Japan and china restored diplomatic relations in 1972. Cat n watanabe could have returned to his home country, but he couldnt leave his foster mother who had been disabled by a stroke and he decided to remain in china. Now hes back where it all started. Hes heading where he and his family suffered such hardship. The fields are filled with corn. Long hills can be seen in the distance. It looks just like it did 70 years ago. A path lands through the field. Its the same path watanabe took to school every day. Translator its been 70 years. It brings back memories of my childhood. I walked on this path when i was young. Its changed a bit. But the old houses are gone and so are the japanese families who lived in them. These days there are only Chinese People in this area. Translator we japanese should not have come here, but chinas land and people made it possible for me to live. I pray for my heart there will never again be fighting between japan and china. People in northern japan are getting to work this morning against strong gusts. Meteorologist robert speta joins us with more. What we have going on is actually once a tropical system, a severe tropical storm, actually, but were really seeing that transition as this does move off toward the north and what i mean by all that is take a look at the satellite imagery and look at hokkaido and definitely the winds continue to kick up and down toward the south is a fairly organized system neartyphoon intensity and you see it disperses out and it interacts with the upper level jets over the westerly to the northern latitude and this is just a big stream of air and you can see it right here it kind of blows it out luke a candle and it expands up the wind field. By no means does that weaken a storm system, but it makes that wind field much longer. Right now in the center of this and expanding out from it are 108 kilometerperhour sustained wins and the galeforce winds are here and this expands out. You are seeing breezy conditions and where people are really being impacted and traveling at the very least and at least 100 flights have been cancel side out here toward hokkaido and lets go to video that we have of northeastern hokkaido. Look at that. The Winds Continuing to kick up these blinding rains and extremely strong gusts. Poor bird right there just trying to fly toward the coast and in this area, winds upward of 184 Kilometers Per Hour have been observed. Theyre advising residents to be aware of high waves and high tide which is going to occur in the afternoon due to the threat of the incoming winds and high tide there could be the threat of storm surge. We see that in the same location last year from a strong winter storm that came through. So very potent indeed, as this does continue to track off here and actually across most of hokkai hokkaido, we can see winds upwards of 162 Kilometers Per Hour and not to mention the waves and 9 meters high and very well possible toward the coast and weve been seeing waves upward of 8 meters down near the tohoku region and 108 Kilometers Per Hour and not a fullblown typhoon and at the very least its a potent storm system that will not be venturing around outside and if i can help it off there. Back toward the west we do have a storm moving through northeastern china. This one is more winterlike, actually and it has snowfall across parts of mongolia extending toward northeastern china and with that well see a cold surge set up by the end of the week and bring some breezy conditions down toward taiwan and Northern Areas of the philippines. Temperatures definitely dropping and ulan bator just 6 there for your high and sunny skies at the very least on your thursday. Meanwhile, back toward here. I did mention tokyo, and i mentioned they have breezy condition, but there will be sunny weather throughout the day and the dry air wrapping around the storm system. Over towards europe we do have a low pressure area just off the coast of the British Isles and thats moving into the Scandinavian Peninsula and well bring rough weather for you as we go through the next 24 hours and very windy conditions coming near there and down toward the south, i want to key in on this because every time we talk about a storm in the Eastern Mediterranean well take the factor, as well. The refugee crisis outdoors and in unsheltered areas and the storm brought severe flooding to france earlier this week and strong wind gusts 50 to 70 millimeters as possible and also water spouts have been reported from this across the areas. Something to keep in mind as we go ahead through the next several days. Ill leave you now with your extended outlook. We have one more story to share with you before we go.
