The forecast calls for 100 point 5 feet. Heres what the Iowa Flood Center says a crest at that level would look like. Water from the cedar river and lakes in that area would flood the city as far north as lone tree road. It would also cover sturgis and river front parks along the river. Volunteers were out overnight trying to falls. That area is normally busy on a friday night, but was eerily quiet with so many people preparing for flooding. Kcrgtv9s Samantha Myers shows us some of the other sandbagging efforts in the city. Groups of volunteers are stationed all around cedar falls, theyre building walls out of sandbags and helping out in any way they can. The city sent out a call for help at five on friday for people to help with the sand faster than anticipated. Volunteer lynn hoth spent her day filling sand bags. 9 38 15 last time we were an island for three days and we couldnt get in or out you know so just have to be ready, weve had notice so thats good and people help each other and the help from all ages, adults, uni students, and children. Touch cedar falls the city blocked off highway 57 near downtown due to flooding late last night. Flooding has also shut down traffic on parts of and to the east. Touch manchester. Flooding on the wapsi forced the city of manchester to close off part of highway 13 north of 20. Here in cedar rapids, the city has already closed several streets to prepare for this weekends flooding. Crews shut down 3rd Street Southeast at 8th and 16th avenues yesterday afternoon. The city is encouraging everyone to avoid all of as is ellis road west of edgewood. The city is also asking that the drivers remove all of their vehicles from the downtown area by 7 00 this morning. Thats to make room for any Construction Equipment that needs to get downtown for flood protection. Hesco barriers are already up in cedar rapids along the river. The plan is to deploy four thousand feet of those barriers with earthen levees and berms. The city is hoping that will protect cedar rapids for a crest of up to 26 feet. Newbo district, czech village, the time check neighborhood, and downtown have also started taking precautions. The City Engineer says cedar rapids learned a lot from the 2008 flood and feels better prepared. When the crest forecast increased today, we had to change our plans a little bit, so weve been working all day to adapt those, the measures that we put in place. We did so we could add to those, so thats the part that we are working on original crest prediction of 24point1 feet meant the flood could affect 389 commercial properties, and slightly more than 13hundred residential properties. Of course, that area has expanded a bit with the higher crest prediction. Cedar rapids is suspending bus service through tuesday because of the predicted flooding. At that time, the city will reassess when to start running busses. Cedar rapids is warning wholl need to evacuate and who have pets to try to find alternative housing before taking them to the animal shelter. But cedar rapids animal care and control says pet owners can use that facility, if they have to. Itll start accepting those pets at noon today. The Downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library is also shutting down through tuesday. The library says the safety of the community is a higher priority. Current projections library.
