But officials hope by spreading the word that they are looking for a place someone will come forward with some space. For the past two years officials in iowa city hav transformed an old grocery store, and Old Office Building into an emergency homeless shelters, during the cold winter months. The efforts have kept Homeless People refusing to go to shelter house. Out of the cold, and out of city hall where many men slept years ago. I wont freeze to death, but if i did it would be an easy nice way to go. But today, past locations are no longer available. Anybody in the community that was experiencing homelessness could come in there whether they were intoxicated, whatever reason it house. Officials at shelter house, who have spear headed the project in the past say two years ago 120 different people stayed at the emergency shelter. And 175 different people stayed there last year. During that same time period they say Emergency Rooms reported a decrease in frost bite cases, and no one died from the extreme cold. Thats why they say finding a spot soon is a must. This year what we really need is some bathrooms in it, an empty space that is warm where we can put some cots on the floor, and thats re can make about anything work. All in all Officials Say it will cost about 60 thousand dollars to run this shelter for three months. But theyre not worried about the finances. The developers who want to are willing to pay investors who tried and failed to get a casino a couple of years ago. Steve emerson has announced the creation of a 1point5 Million Dollar fund. That would help reimburse members of the Cedar Rapids Development group. That group wanted to bring a casino to the city but the state denied them a license, citing the effect it would have on nearby casinos. Paying those investors would make them supporters of emersons plan. Inestors could get up to half of their money back, up to 50thousan from the Doubletree Hotel it would not have a restaurant or hotel and would be much smaller then the previous casino plan. Now identified the driver who crashed into a Springville School bus late yesterday afternoon. 26yearold Molly Zelinskas of dubuque remains hospitalized with life threatening injuries. The crash happened shortly after 3 30 yesterday afternoon near highway 151 and stone road. Linn county investigators say the springville bus driver followed state law in stopping on the highway and letting a student off. The same direction as a school bus must stop when the driver lowers the bus stop arm. Springville superintenden t pat hocking says the district will review procedures for stopping on higherspeed highways. But he thinks alternatives arent any safer. The Iowa Public Health department has confirmed that one person has died from the west nile virus. Its the states first death from the disease since 2010. Public health wont release an identify, and says only that the person was 81 years old has confirmed 33 cases of west nile virus so far this year, more than twice the number at this time last year. And its investigating several other possible cases. The cooler weather means kids will soon need winter coats to stay warm. Families in need can stop until 1 30 to pick out a coat. The Salvation Army says the need is great each year. Kids are always the hardest and most requested item. Kids continue to grow out of their coats whereas an adult will wear a coat for a few years. And so having all of these extra coats is a wonderful thing. Cedar rapids businesses will not face any fines for still having sandbags. The Metro Economic Alliance initially said businesses could face fines, but the city says that is not the case. While the city did remove sandbags from residential areas after last months floodig dispose of their sandbags on their own. Many helicopter pilots are reaching retirement age. So one university in eastern iowa is starting a program to train the next generation of chopper pilots. Thats next here on tv nine. University of dubuque students a new option in the aviation program. Starting in january, the university will offer a program. The University Says the addition is a response to the current helicopter Pilot Shortage in the united states. Kcrgtv9s Katie Wiedemann is live in the dubuque tonight. Katie, why do professors there say theres a shortage of people sitting in the cockpit . Like many other professions, baby boomer aged pilots are retiring and there are no younger pilots to replace them. Director steve acceneulli says theres a high demand for jobs that require a helicopter license and flight hours. Some of those jobs include medical flight pilots, crop dusting, survey work and photography. The university has been training airplane pilots for more than 40 years. They say adding Helicopter Training to the program will be a natural transition. When you learn about air space, you have to learn about it all. Whether you are in a helicopter or in an airplane you he says there are certain helicopter maneuvers a pilot needs to learn that are much different than flying and landing a plane. Enrollment for the new Program Starts next month. Ud says they already have several students planning to sign up.
