The Black Hawk CountySheriffs Office had to wait for toxicology results before arresting 18 year old shye johnston. They did that yesterday on charges of driving left of center causing a death, and failure to have control of a Motor Vehicle causing death. Johnstons car crashed headon into a vehicle on west reinbeck road near hudson on september 25th. The crash killed 34 year old Holly Paradine of lincoln, iowa, who was driving the second car. Jury selection began today for a man whos on trial for the fatal stabbing of his ex girlfriend in the marion hyvee parking lot last spring. The charge against 32 year old nicholas is first degree murder. Authorities allege that he had been following 29 year old Lynnsey Donald for months before he ambushed her in april. After the attack, police say donald tried to kill himself. Lynnsey donalds seven year old son was with her when the stabbing happened. The defense plans to claim leurkens had diminished capacity and was intoxicated at the time. The state has tentatively agreed to pay 235thousand dollars to settle a lawsuit by a former resident at the iowa juvenile home. Jessica turner claimed in her suit that the cells for 280 days between 2011 and 2012. She claims she would cry and tell employees she was in pain and wanted out, but they would only let her out to use the bathroom. Governor branstad closed the juvenile home in toledo last year, partially over concerns about the treatment of residents. A judge has upheld the murder conviction of a woman who shot and killed her 20 year old neighbor in 2001. Tracey richter argued there were errors by her defense attorney, the prosecutor, and the judge in her 2011 trial. Richter is serving a life sentence for the death of dustin wehde. Prosecutors say she shot him after making him write a note saying that her exhusband hired him to kill her and her son. They say it was a plot to frame him during a custody battle. Richter claims she shot him in selfdefense. Voting officials in Johnson County will be extra watchful during tomorrows city elections. Theyll try to make sure poll watchers are following state law. Johnson county auditor Travis Weipert says hes heard some candidates in University Heights and iowa city will have poll watchers at voting locations. These people can contest a ballot, if they believe the person who filled it out is not eligible to vote. To further complicate things, weipert says some of those poll watchers will actually be writein candidates for mayor and city council. We have not received paperwork yet that would allow them to be, but we are being told by candidates who are on the ballot that they are going to file the paperwork, and the people theyre requesting to be their poll watchers will be writein candidates. Weipert checked with the secretary of states office, and it is legal for a writein candidate to be a poll watcher. It is illegal, however, for a writein candidate to have his or her own poll watchers at voting locations. Landlords are frustrated with the Sheriffs Department to serve iction notices to their tenants. Landlords say after they receive a court order, it usually takes about a week for someone from the Sheriffs Office to serve an eviction notice. Now they say the process is taking more than double that amount of time because a sergeant is on extended medical leave. Landlords say they understand they have to be patient, but its costing them a lot. You are asking me as a landlord to go another month without collecting a rent, because you dont have enough man power or somebody scheduled that can help you remove the person you need to go, and that hurts.
