Dave, what are educators doing to get these now second graders ready to pass their reading tests next year in third grade . Beth, cedar rapids schools began working on ways to improve reading a year ago last fall. Some of it seems rather simple. For instance second graders who, will be in 3rd grade next year when the rule begins, had recess time cut just a bit so they could spend more time on reading. Reading aloud cedar rapids schools test students for reading proficiency three times a year. A score at the substantial deficiency level will result in a letter like this to parents. Schools will create an intervention plan both for parents and for the teacher to use in the classroom. Twenty four percent of 3rd graders in cedar rapids were deficient last year but administrators believe that we saw good results from fall to spring that our kids did make nice growth so i anticipate that 24 percent of third graders not proficiency last spring will be lower this spring. 3rd graders who dont meet the reading standards in spring of 2017 can stay with their class if they take part in a Summer School reading program. We got to see them upclose, and its easy to see the counterfeiters printed them on regular paper. But police say there are even easier ways for businesses to protect themselves from fake money.
