this year show 22 percent of iowa third graders are substantially deficient. an additional eight percent are considered at-risk. and 68 percent are adequately progressing. 2-percent are unknown. lawmakers passed the iowa reading and retention law in 2012 kcrg t-v nine s dave franzman joins us. you ve been looking into how schools are getting ready to meet the requirements. bruce, cedar rapids schools are testing students for reading skills three times a year and intervening sooner than state rules require. parents with students who don t read at grade level are being encouraged to do more reading time at home. the hope is it s enough to let those who are substantially deficient readers now catch up with their classmates next year. second graders in brooke speraw s classroom are some of the iowa kids who must meet the reading requirements next held back a grade.sot/nat so reading has an even higher priority than years before. many classes, like this one, have cut back on ....

with just a wave of a hand, brain surgeons can get some help in the opeting room. that s all thanks a pair of university of iowa undergraduate students. live in the newsroom this morning. forrest, what did these students do to help surgeons? they built a robot. three ui students coded and assembled the thing for a senior project. take a look. currently, doctors often use microscopes to do brain surgery. they have to spend up to ten hours looking into the device, often hunched over. the robot replaces all that. it uses cameras to lock on to an area of the brain, like a tumor. video is sent back to a headset, which the surgeon can wear. the doctor can even use a special hands free controller to move the camera. though the robot is a prototype, creators have high hopes for the future. we re happy with our result. t, i think that in the future, new technology is coming out all the time, i think they ll be able to modify or change little things about this and make it even ....
