Alliant is charging customers for energy they used during the summer months that they have not paid for. The company says its new billing system based estimates for those months on what a customer used in the summer of 2015. But the estimates came up short because this years hotter weather caused people to use more electricity. Alliant says it couldnt notify customers about it is short staffed. It will gather at the City Services Center Building on 6th street sw from 10 to 11 am today, to talk about the citys flood response process. City leaders say there was minimal damage to the properties it inspected after the flood. The city didnt inspect a home unless the owner called or asked for a utility re connection. Staffers inspected about 60 homes. The flood caused mino the city inspected 33 commercial properties. The flood minimally impacted 13 of those. Most of the damage was to heating and cooling equipment. The city has also issued 57 permits as of sunday, primarily for utility reconnections. Red cross kits are available for anyone who needs to clean up after flooding in their homes. The kits include bleach, mops, tarps, and trash bags. In cedar falls, kits are at supplies are available at the civic Center Starting thursday through friday. Outside of cedar rapids but in linn county, people can find the kits at the palo city hall. Last night, dozens of West Des Moines Police Officers gathered for a powerful promotion ceremony for late officer shawn miller. Dozens applauded as West Des Moines police chief shaun ladue presented Millers Family with his sergeant badge. Miller was scheduled to be promoted to sergeant weeks after he died in a motorcycle cras to still honor that promotion, and Millers Family says theyre touched by the outpouring of love and support. I was very honored to have it handed to me. He loved the community. He loved the police department. He always wanted to me a Police Officer West Des Moines city leaders also presented Millers Family with a key to the city. Iowa prison Officials Say a man serving a life sentence for his role in a notorious atwell conner, jr. , was 71 when he died sunday. He was an inmate at the anamosa state penitentiary. In 1974, conner and 2 friends in cedar rapids planned to commit an armed robbery. They picked up 2 teenagers, Maureen Connolly and michael servey, whose car had run out of gas on 6th street sw in cedar rapids. 1 of conners friends later raped the girl and then shot and killed both teenagers in different locations. Skimmers can give criminals access to a victims bank account. Police suggest looking for any unusual or loose attachments on the atm. Police also suggest monitoring your bank account for any purchases you didnt make. If you do see that an atm has been tampered with, call police immediately. Dubuque Police Issued a similar warning last week after a report of a skimmer at a bank atm in a nearby city. City workers and private contractors began clearing bridges and key streets last week. Now, many workers are trying to reopen ellis boulevard nw. The city is giving priority to barriers that block streets, driveways, railroad crossings, and business entrances.
