New this morning. Someone hit a house with gunfire this morning around 3 am in waterloo. Police responded to a house in the 200 block of reed street. No one was hurt, and police are still investigating. A man faces a first degree murder charge this morning after he fatally stabbed another man. This all happened at a motel on the outskirts of cedar rapids. The Linn County Sheriffs Office says 47 year old Michael Lehman stabbed 23 year old jimmi jon lint several times during a fight. It happened at the cedrel motel, which is a few miles west of cedar rapids on highway 30. Around 12 30 am yesterday, law officers found lint lying on the floor of a room with several stab wounds. He died later at a hospital. Sheriffs deputies arrested lehman in another room at the motel. A man is in Police Custody after Authorities Say he broke into a home and severely beat a woman in elkader last week. Police say 24yearold Brandon Thoma broke into the home after the womans husband left for work last tuesday. They say he then repeatedly punched and kicked the woman. Police say she went to the hospital but have not released her condition. Thoma is in custody in wisconsin and is awaiting extradition to iowa on an attempted murder charge. Police believe the attack was not random. This raymond man is awaiting sentencing for driving under the influence of prescription drugs in a deadly crash last year. The waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports 30yearold joshua dunt pleaded guilty to a vehicular homicide charge yesterday. Dunt was driving in the 66hundred block of la porte road near washburn last october when he crossed the center line. He crashed head on into another vehicle. 20yearold warren van wie of cedar falls and his passenger went to the hospital. Van wie later a company in dyersville is looking at tens of thousands of dollars in damage after a semi truck crashed into the building. The business says a driver nearby forgot to set the brake on his semi, and the truck rolled into the faust showroom yesterday morning. No one was hurt, and faust is still open for business. Starting today, the Cedar Rapids School district will hold Community Conversation s about new grading practices. The district is implementing standards based grading. It eliminates traditional grades in favor of measuring students based on specific skills they should know for each class. This week, the three member board will listen to representatives from dakota access. Thats the company that wants to build an oil pipeline that would stretch from north dakota to illinois. The board also plans to hear from landowners the pipeline would affect. Last week, more than 200 people, both for and against the project, spoke before the board. Marion is preparing for a potential new hotel in the heart of the community. While its still a work in progress, the city says the plan is to build a multi Million Dollar hotel. Gld properties owns and will develop the land at 2823 seventh avenue. The city just got the results back from a market study saying it could support a 100room hotel. The study also looked at the hotel having a meeting space and a restaurant. What theyve concluded is with the growth in the metro area that it would take only a couple of years to rooms based on a 100 room facility.
