Fire crews responded to the 1500 block 17th street just after 3 00 this morning. Fire Officials Say a man inside the home was cooking. He was able to get out without any injuries. When crews arrived on the scene the home was fully engulfed, destroying the porch and charring a wall. Right now crews are working on assessing the damage. Well tell you what a neighbor heard just before the fire, coming up. Its finally game day. Tonight is the night where the Denver Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers. The two teams have been gearing up all week long from practices to media appearances. Blue and orange have taken santa clara by storm. Hurd died yesterday after a fall from the 22nd floor of the plaza condos downtown near cowles commons. Des Moines Police say it appears to be a suicide. No one on the ground was hurt. Residents at the plaza were informed of what happened by email this evening. Last night. Through the business and civic world pretty quickly. Hurd joined barkers life back in 1954. That Company Later become principal. And hurd was first named president in 1987 and then ceo in 1989. Where he remained until 1994 when he retired. Hurd then focused his attention to Community Projects. Like the Des Moines Development corporation, the downtown partnership, the des moines Arts Festival, and the Des Moines Chamber of commerce. This is the 99th annual iowa state bowling tournament. Dick welch its enjoyable to see and hopefully maybe well have someone shoot a 300, which is a perfect game. It is combined with the wind through the overnight hours tonight into monday that we could get in on whiteout conditions especially to the north and west. This should be over by the end of the day on monday. How much snow is generally less than an inch in central iowa. To the north they could get an inch or an inch and a half north of highway 20. The National Weather service has issued a blizzard warning that goes into effect at 7 00 tonight until monday at 6 00. Its a disease found in 96 of last month researchers confirmed former hawkeye and new york giants star tyler sash had the degenerative brain disease when he died at age 27 of an accidental Prescription Drug overdose. Sashs mother says her son, who played High School Football at oskaloosa, suffered from confusion, memory loss, and a short temper. She donated his brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation in boston. Another iowa family is donating their sons brain in the name of cte research. And they are doing so, at their sons request. Mark tauscheck has the story. Mark zac easters devotion to football started in 3rd grade. Hes a young man who loved the sport, who like any other athlete didnt want to take himself out of a game unless somebody made him. Mark zac played 10 years, until he was forced to stop in the middle of his senior year at indianola. Myles he had 3 confirmed concussions and he had to quit. Mark thats zac, 44, during not backing down from an ankeny lineman towering over him. I knew that last one was not good at ankeny, i could just see the look. Sue wilson im good sue, those were the words. Im good sue, im good to go. Mark sue wilson was the athletic trainer at indianola on the sidelines in 2009 for each of zacs concussions. Wilson back then they could return on the field 24 hours later, sometimes they were back sooner than an ankle sprain. Mark after high school, zac joined the National Guard and suffered what was likely another concussion during a training accident at age 21. He suffered another concussion when a driver plowed into the back of his car. She was going 65 Miles Per Hour, and he was at a dead stop. Mark in the fall of 2014, zac complained of severe headaches, problems with balance, his vision. Memory loss, im having a hard time remembering things, im having some slurred speech. Mark it was a des moines doctor who first mentioned cte. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Said, what exactly is cte . And he goes, its like brain dementia mom. Mark several professional Football Players were among the first diagnosed with cte after they died, and the issue is the subject of the hollywood movie concussion. I found a disease that no one has ever seen. Mark will smith plays dr. bennett omalu, who first identified cte in pro Football Player mike webster in 2002 and has since determined all autopsies of cte show the kind of brain damage previously seen in people with alzheimers disease or dementia. Myles i was in denial, you know were tough guys in this family. Well get through this, you know. Mark of course mom went looking for help, research, answers, but she discovered what her son already understood. He just looked at me and said mom, theres no hope for me. There are no treatment programs. Mark zac moved back home last it was very difficult to see a strong young man, very intelligent, really go downhill so quickly. Mark zac knew cte could only be diagnosed by direct tissue examination of the brain, after death. And he said to me mom, i want my brain donated to science. And i said nope, someday zac , ill find the right help for us. Dont give up for me. Mark just after midnight, on december 19th, zac drove to lake aquhabi and shot himself. He left a note in his car apologizing to the First Responders and called the sheriffs dispatch to tell them where he was. Myles they heard the gunshot go off on the phone. We drove out there as fast as we could. Mark zac took care not to damage his brain, preserving it for research. He left two notebooks in the family room, including a journal, documenting his daily over his body, his thoughts, his life. As it turns out, zach was way ahead of all of us. Mark mike hadden is a professor and just finished a sabbatical studying cte. Mike hadden through his journaling, we have so much material, and information from this. That its almost as if, i mean, its a first hand experience. And so we can tell that story. Mark zac writes in detail about concussion. Protocol has changed. Trainer sue wilson says these days any symptom, even a headache, means the player is done for the game and wont come back until doctors clear them. Wilson i feel a little responsible, because he was in our care. As an athletic trainer, our ultimate goal is to keep kids safe. Thats why you go into athletic training. Expresses his desire to tell Young Athletes its ok to tell coaches if youre dizzy, or have a headache. Ok to take yourself off the field, wanting to tell everyone that all those concussions changed him. That helmets need to be safer. That more Research Needs to be done on cte. I think if we can make some of these things happen, its our gift back to our son. And thats all we can give him right now. Alyx that was Mark Tauscheck reporting. Zacs brain has been sent to dr. Omalu in california. If he does discover cte, the detailed notes zac kept will be very valuable for his research. Right now, case reports on cte largely feature 2nd hand accounts from friends and family. The easters are adamant they are not against the game of football. They are speaking out at the request of their son and to done to prevent and detect concussions, including the development of rapid result blood tests for concussions that can be administered right on the sidelines and give instant results. Concussions are a hot topic during this years super bowl. Childserve in johnston opened a concussion clinic last fall. The location is dedicated to young people showing signs of concussions. There they are monitored and tested to ensure that they dont return to activities and sports before their brains are symptom free. Dr. Fred klinbeil kids were put back into play quickly, and now we are appreciating there are symptoms that last a longer period of time, they can be subtle. Hurd died yesterday after a fall from the 22nd floor of the plaza condos downtown near cowles commons. Des Moines Police say it appears to be a suicide. No one on the ground was hurt. Residents at the plaza were informed of what happened by email saturday evening. News of hurds death spread through the business and civic world pretty quickly. Hurd joined barkers life back in 1954. That Company Later become principal. And hurd was first named president in 1987 and then ceo in 1989. Where he remained until 1994 when he retired. Hurd then focused his attention to Community Projects. Like the Des Moines Development corporation, the downtown partnership, the des moines Arts Festival, and the Des Moines Chamber of commerce. Mark zac easters devotion to football started in 3rd grade. Hes a young man who loved the sport, who like any other athlete didnt want to take himself out of a game unless somebody made him. Mark zac played 10 years until he was forced to stop in the middle of his senior year at indianola. He had three confirmed concussions his senior year and he had to quit. Mark thats zac 44 during his final game, not backing down from an ankeny lineman towering over him. I knew that last one was not good, at ankeny, i could just see the look. Go. Mark sue wilson was the athletic trainer at indianola on the sidelines in 2009 for each of zacs concussions. Back then they could return on the field 24 hours later sometimes they were back sooner than an ankle sprain. Mark after high school zac joined the National Guard and suffered what was likely another concussion during a training accident. At age 21, he suffered another concussion when a driver plowed into the back of his car. She was going 65 Miles Per Hour, and he was at a dead stop. Mark in the fall of 2014 zac complained of severe headaches problems with balance, his , vision. Memory loss, im having a hard time remembering things, im having some slurred speech. In his car apologizing to the First Responders and called the sheriffs dispatch to tell them where he was. They heard the gunshot go off on the phone. We drove out there as fast as we could and it was too late. Mark zac took care not to damage his brain, preserving it for research. He left two notebooks in the family room including a journal, documenting his daily battle with whatever had taken over his as it turns out, zach was way ahead of all of us. Mark mike hadden is a professor in Sports Sciences at simpson and just finished a sabbatical studying cte. Through his journaling we have so much material, and information from this that its almost as if, i mean its a firsthand experience.
