Friday night around 10 30, officers responded to the intersection of 13th street and jefferson avenue. When they arrived they found an adult male victim, deceased as a result of apparent gunshot injury. Police are currently interviewing witnesses, and a suspect description is being developed. Taking a look at some more big stories this morning, Downtown Des Moines is expanding south, and rapidly. The latest evidence, two new restaurants opening south of mlk next week. Guru bbq and fuzzys taco shop both open monday in the latest century old building to be the Downtown Community Alliance Lists 441 Housing Units now under construction or proposed just south of mlk between southwest 8th to principal park. This has started to take off, especially this corridor with all these lofts and apartments and things. Alyx the renovated warehouse also includes a jimmy johns and anytime fitness. President obama rejects the keystone x. L. Pipeline project, that would have stretched from canada to texas. The controversial decision is drawing some heated reaction from local lawmakers and president ial candidates. Kccis ryan smith has their responses. Ryan the pipelines path would not have crossed into the hawkeye state. Am i disappointed . Yeah. These are jobs. Ryan but congressman david young says the project meant opportunity for iowa workers. They would have been working on this pipeline. The drivers and truckers out there, they would have been hauling pipeline. This would be money in the pockets of iowans. Ryan the pipeline would have shipped roughly 830,000 barrels a day of heavy crude oil from fields in canada to gulf coast refineries. Texas senator ted cruz in des moines today vowing to revive the controversial project. Mr. Cruz if im elected president , i will approve the keystone pipeline. Ryan off stage, he was quick to accuse president obama and washington democrats of cozying up to environmental donors. Mr. Cruz they just made the calculation, i assume, that theres more money they can get from the california billionaires and the Union Members jobs are not that important. I think that is cold and cynical. Ryan keystone x. L. Became a political fight about jobs and oil revenue versus the environmental impact. The Iowa Environmental Council applauding the white house tonight for backing renewable fuels. We recognize there are pros and cons to all the pipeline issues but its the overall threat, the nature of the production, the threat to the land and water across these two countries. Here in iowa, officials continue to debate the bakken oil pipeline, not related to the xl pipeline. This pipeline would run through 18 iowa counties. A public hearing is set for thursday in boone. The demand to participate is so high the iowa utilities board capped the number of speakers to 210. The board says it wont make a decision on the project until after a november 16 evidence hearing. New charges for gabriel coco. Police say he shot two teenagers outside an ankeny mcdonalds two weeks ago. Authorities originally charged him with two counts of willful injury. Now investigators say security footage from the restaurant and witness interviews led them to add one attempted murder charge. Condition. Investigators say makuey used a metal spatula to kill 97yearold Rupert Anderson and beat his wife, harriett in their des moines home. After his arrest, makuey was recorded talking to himself. He denied ever being there despite video showing him outside the home. Early on in the monologue hes quoted as saying i dont even know what happened. I dont even know what happened. If there was a fight, if there was a robbery, if someone got beat. Kcci 8 news alyx makuey is using the insanity defense, but witnesses say they saw no signs of mental illness. Now to an update in johnston. The School District is in the process of getting more cameras for their school buses. This, in the midst of an incident last week when students shot cell phone video of a bus driver assaulting a special needs student on a bus. A spokeswoman says the district had ordered eight cameras before the incident happened. Each camera costs about 2000. There are 80 buses in the district. For the safety of the students and drivers its good to have some kind of Monitoring System in place. Alyx a School Official says the 8 new cameras should be in place by the end of this year. Geological survey says Central Chile has been hit by a 6. 8 magnitude the quake struck early this morning, northwest of the capital. No immediate damages have been reported. And two officers have been arrested in louisiana in the shooting death of a 6yearold boy earlier this week, and the boy father was also wounded in the incident. The officers are now booked on charges of seconddegree murder and attempted murder. The boy was in a vehicle with his father when pursuing officers opened fire. An investigation is ongoing. U. S. Vanessa Harold Ridpheh of gilbert says now that hes moved off the farm, he locks his doors. Deadbolts on the two main doors, the front door and then the door from the garage to the kitchen. Vanessa wednesday, we spoke to ames police about five burglaries that happened over the halloween weekend. All the victims didnt lock their doors. Wyatt davis say he and his roommates lost their keys. Lesson to keep our doors locked. Vanessa jane larson owns a business called funky roost. Its right next to her ames home. Shes dealt with some burglaries. We take every step, i guess, we could think to prevent people from coming in but it does make you feel kind of vulnerbale. Vulnerable. Annual walks and runs raise awareness for the disease, but a group in chicago is taking a different approach, a Breast Cancer comedy show. Adriana diaz sat down with the woman known as the cancer queen of comedy. Its my first time doing comedy. Adriana this was nikki martinezs standup debut five years ago. And im trying not to die. Adriana you werent a comedian your whole life . No. Adriana how did this start . Cancer. Adriana the Chicago Office manager was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer in 2010, on a wednesday. By monday, doctors had removed her left breast. Thats when i decided id make cancer my career. Adriana and the jokes started flowing. Doesnt cancer equal skinny . What the hell do i have . Adriana youre going on a stage and cracking jokes about it. Thats the way of me giving it the finger if i can say that on camera adriana comedy producer mike oquendo gave nikki her first shot. He hosts an annual Breast Cancer charity show. Maybe 10 to 15 of our regular audience members at some point or another are dealing with it. Adriana nikki underwent 12 rounds of chemo and 33 radiation treatments. At this years show, she shared some news. Unfortunately, my cancer came back in 2012 and i currently have tumors from my scalp, down my neck, down my spine, in my hips. Adriana where do you find your strength . My daughter, definitely my daughter. I cannot leave her. Im not ready. Adriana doctors say its terminal. But nikki plans to keep them laughing. She says shes cornered the market. Youre not gonna find too many healthy women thats gonna whip off a wig and a fake boob, so thats probably the only advantage is, you cant really steal my jokes.
