Out on interstate 80 in altoona, drivers are moving cautiously with minimal traffic around the 9 0010 00 hour tonight. Also, a few stalled vehicles on the interstate. We spotted one car that had spun around completely facing , eastbound in the westbound lane, near exit 141. Vehicles that havent been moved now buried under a thick blanket of snow. We caught up with one driver, just before venturing out into the first snow storm in a new car. Rich ive never had a frontwheel drive car before. Ryan this is frontwheel drive . Good luck to you. Rich tell me about it. And ive been hearing from all the drivers coming in. Things are not improving at all, the east or the west, so its pretty bad out there. Roy wet and slippery. Thats about it. Take a look at the dark purple in the middle of the screen. That means travel not advised in the des moines metro, up interstate 35, and points north and east. The areas you see in pink are roads that are 100 snow and ice covered. Roads in blue are partially covered. And you can see just a couple of them. The roads in green are rated as clear. And heres a live look at the roads here in the metro. It looks like the roads and wet at this point. But dot says travel is not advised. Kevin situations like that all around iowa lots of accidents , around central iowa tonight. Our crews were there right after a car slid off the road into a creek near adel. The car wound up partially submerged. The man inside had to be extricated by fire crews. Were told he was conscious and taken to the hospital with nonlifethreatening injuries. Meanwhile, at the other end of the metro, dramatic new video of a water rescue in berwick, just west of altoona, as a car slid ing into a creek there. In fact, standing here for about 10 minutes, i counted nine clouds that went down grand avenue and locust, i could see them up on ingersoll. Many of the city streets are still snowcovered. We had trouble driving down a small hill, on which our brakes did not work at all. Plow drivers out tonight tell us they always enjoy the first snow fall. And theyre not the only ones. The Iowa High School Athletic Association postponed the 1a, 2a, and 4a games moving them to monday. Dowling catholic and cedar rapidskennedy now play monday night in cedar falls at 7 06. The game will go on in iowa city tomorrow. We are talking about the hawkeyes, of course. Crews will be working all through the night to get the snow out of Kinnick Stadium. A group of tap dancers greeted visitors, amidst strong winds and heavy snowfall. The holiday promenade is the kickoff to the Holiday Shopping season. The wind is softer, the snow is what as you can see, this is a popular, heavily used parking lot. Even in these conditions, they have two different plows working the parking lot. And they are moving a lot of snow. The snow mound that they are bumping all of the snow into, theyre at least four feet high and the moment. We talked to some truckers and drivers in the area. They tell us that Road Conditions here in altoona not all that bad. I have to say, driving east around 9 00, it was more passable and more free to move then through i235 near the down town area.
