you know? that's what the army does. we have values and we stand and live for those values. >> soldiers work fast, yes. >> there's no way we could've done all of this. no way. >> yesterday was the first day a lot of the flood victims in clarksville were allowed back in their homes. now, to find out what you can do, how you can make a difference and help people in tennessee, go to impact your world at our website cnn.com/impact. bp workers are putting this oil containment dome over a gushing well head in the gulf of mexico. they lowered the dome 5,000 feet to the sea floor. that happened yesterday. well, now they're waiting for it to settle to make sure that it's stable. the idea here is to cover the leaking well head, then funnel the oil to a surface ship. that will keep the oil from spilling into the gulf. the coast guard says there are no guarantees, though, this plan will work. >> this is the first time this has been tried in this depth of water. and there's lots of firsts we're seeing here, and we have to allow it to -- there's a lot of steps before it can actually be activated. so i want to let you know that this is going to take a few days. this is not going to be something instantaneous. and it may or may not work. >> the coast guard is trying to minimize the damage from oil that's already spilled. it says it has already burned thousands of gallons of oil and will do more this weekend. you see it there. it is also dropping oil-dispersing chemicals and skilling oil from the water. despite all that, the massive oil slick has reached louisiana's barrier islands. time square was evacuated yesterday a while again, but in the end, it was a false alarm. the evacuation came when a suspicious package was found near 45th street and broadway. it turned out to be a green cooler with bottles of water inside. the area where it was found was only a few blocks from where a car bomb failed to explode last weekend, you may recall. celebrating mom on wall street yesterday, but it's really been a roller coaster week ending with stocks down for the year. not much celebrating. they bounced up and down all day yesterday in the three major indices ended up substantially lower. they've been sliding for about four straight days. investors are pretty concerned the financial crisis in greece can spread to other countries. they're also worried about the outcome of british elections where no party won a straight majority. police have arrested two teenagers who were allegedly planning a school attack in long island. police say the teens wanted to kill faculty and students at this high school. the suspects are a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. police say they were texting each other about buying guns and killing someone. and also searched for info about bomb-making online. two other teenagers were charged with planning a similar attack at the same school back in 2007. this huge apartment fire in florida burned at least 40 families out of their homes. take a look at the flames there. it's pretty bad. it started in one unit, raced to the attic, then spread throughout the 3-story building. some people escaped with just the clothes they were wearing. >> i couldn't breathe at all. my eyes were getting blurry. i couldn't smell anything. i couldn't see. but we ran out and ran to the corner, it wasn't as bad yet. it started getting worse, worse, worse -- >> i had to hold my granddaughter -- put my hand over her face and run down. >> they were able to get out. but look here in atlanta. people who live in this apartment complex got a scare, as well. fire destroyed seven units and damaged two more yesterday. one man said he grabbed his keys, phone, and a bible, and was about to jump from a third-floor window when rescuers came to his aid with a ladder. there were no reports of any injuries here. the cause of this fire is under investigation. some people in north dakota may have trouble believing it is springtime. take a look at this. it is snow on the ground in marion. that was yesterday. snowfall turned into rain. it didn't last long, but still, it's may 8th. the temperature did dip below freezing last night. things are expected to get a bit better today. first lady michelle obama nearly broke down in tears before an audience yesterday. she was hosting a gathering in honor of mother's day and got choked up talking about how much her own mother means to her. >> and raising our girls in the white house with my mom -- not going to do this. -- is a beautiful experience. and the opportunity to have three generations living in the white house is beautiful. and i'm pretty sure the president's happy about it too. >> well, aside from her own mother, guests included former first lady rosalind carter, trisha cox, and young women from mrs. obama's mentoring program. you never really know what is lurking around in a mississippi bayou. >> have you seen big ones like that? famous grand ole opry house. this is some of the first video of the devastation inside the building. look at how bad it is. at the peak of the floods the opry stage was under two feet of water. last sunday workers scrambled to move some of the music hall's most precious memorabilia to higher ground as water rushed over a nearby levee. the opry staff is promising the show will eventually go on, despite the flood. >> you walk in here right now and it's just very depressing, but the good news is the soul, the soul of the grand ole opry is intact. >> some of the great technology that we have invested in over the years is still intact, and so we'll be able to utilize that again when we open back up. >> that is good news. plans meanwhile are under way to perform opry shows in other nashville venues, while repairs to the opry house are now under way. it's estimated those repairs will take months, though. the death toll from the floods in tennessee, mississippi, and kentucky, is now at 31. nashville's mayor estimates his city alone has suffered at least $1.5 billion in damage. but despite the devastation, the floods are also bringing people together, in clarksville, tennessee, some flood victims got help from an army of volunteers, literally an army. soldiers from nearby ft. campbell were given a day off to help people clean up their homes. >> why be in the immediate area and not help, you know? that's what the army does. we have values and we stand, we live for those values. >> soldiers work fast, yes. >> it was amazing. there's no way we could have 5,000 feet to the sea floor, that happened yesterday. now they're waiting for it to settle to make sure that it's stable. now the idea here is to cover the leaking wellhead and funnel the oil to a surface ship, that will keep the oil from spilling into the gulf. the coast guard says there are no guarantees this plan will work. >> this is the first time this has been tried in this depth of water and there's lots of firsts we're seeing here and we have to allow it to, there's a lot of steps before it actually can be activated, so i want to let you know that this is going to take a few days. this is not going to be something instantaneously and it may or may not work. >> the coast guard is trying to minimize the damage from oil that's already spilled. it says it has already burned thousands of gallons of oil, and will do more this weekend. you see it there. it is also dropping oil dispersing chemicals and skimming oil from the water. despite all that the massive oil slick has reached louisiana's barrier islands. times square was evacuated for awhile yesterday again, but in the end, it was a false alarm. the evacuation came when a suspicious package was found on 45th street and broadway. it turned out to be a green cooler with bottles of water inside. the area where it was found is a few blocks from where a car bomb failed to explode last weekend, you may recall. celebrating mom on wall street yesterday, but it's really been a roller coaster week ending with stocks down for the year, not much celebrating. they bounced up and down all day yesterday, the three major indices ended up substantially lower. they've been sliding for about four straight days. investors are pretty concerned the financial crisis in greece can spread to other countries. they are also worried about the outcome of british elections, where no party won a straight majority. police have arrested two teenagers who were allegedly planning school attack in long island. police say the teens wanted to kill faculty and students at this high school. the suspects are a 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl. police say they were texting each other about buying guns and killing someone, and also searched for info about bomb-making online. two other teenagers were charged with planning a similar attack at the same school back in 2007. this huge apartment fire in florida burned at least 40 families out of their homes. take a look at the flames there, it's pretty bad. it started in one unit, raced to the attic, then spread throughout the three-story building. some people escaped from a third floor window, when rescuers came to his aid with a ladder. there were no reports of any injuries here. the cause of this fire is under investigation. police in california say they have >> so far, so good but in parts of michigan we're talking about rain and of course northern michigan some snowfall, one to two, maybe three inches of snowfall before some of it switches over to rain. plenty of rainfall in parts of the northeast. when you follow this frontal boundary down in the southeast, perhaps scattered showers along parts of i-10 corridor but fairly nice for much of the gulf coast, nation's mid section looks good. scattered snow showers across parts of the central rockies and cascades also. plenty of sub shine for the west coast of california. for your efforts in parts of the gulf coast in terms of trying to harness the oil flow, temperatures mainly in the 80s, waves one to two feet as that frontal boundary comes through wind to the northeast 10 to 15 miles an hour. what about temperatures, what can you expect on your saturday? devastation inside the building. look at how bad it is. at the peak of the floods, the opry stage was under two feet of water. last sunday, workers scrambled to move some of the music hall's most precious memorabilia to higher ground as water rushed over a nearby levee. now, despite the flood, the opry staff is promising the show will eventually go on. >> you walk in here right now, and it's just very depressing. but the good news is the soul of the grand ole opry is intact. >> some of the great technology that we have invested in over the years is still intact. and so we'll be able to -- we'll be able to utilize that again when we open back up. >> well, that is good news. plans, meanwhile, are under way to perform opry shows and other venues while repairs to the opry house are under way. it's estimated those repairs will take months, though. the death toll from the floods in tennessee, mississippi and kentucky is now at 31. nashville's mayor estimates his city alone has suffered at least $1.5 billion in damage. but despite the devastation, the floods are also bringing people together. in clarksville, tennessee, some flood victims got help from an army of volunteers, literally an army. soldiers from nearby ft. campbell were given a day off to help people clean up their homes. >> why be in the immediate area and not help, you know? that's what the army does. we have values, and we live for those values. >> soldiers work fast, yes. >> it's been amazing. there's no way we could've done all this. no way. >> yesterday was the first day a lot of the flood victims in workers are putting this oil containment dome over a gushing wellhead in the gulf of mexico. they lowered the dome 5,000 feet to the sea floor. that happened yesterday. well, now they're waiting for it to settle to make sure that it's stable. now, the idea here is to cover the leaking wellhead and then funnel the oil to a surface ship. that will keep the oil from spilling into the gulf. the coast guard says there are no guarantees, though, this plan will work. >> this is the first time this has been tried in this depth of water. and there's lots of firsts we're seeing here. and we have to allow it to -- there's a lot of steps before it actually can be activated so i want to let you know that this is going to take a few days. this is not going to be something instantaneous. and may or may not work. >> the coast guard is trying to minimize the damage from the oil that's already spilled. it says it has already burned thousands of gallons of oil and will do more this weekend. you see it there. it is also dropping oil-dispersing chemicals and skimming oil from the water. despite all that, the massive oil slick has reached louisiana's barrier islands. times square was evacuated for a while yesterday again. but in the end, it was a false alarm. the evacuation came when a suspicious package was found near 45th street and broadway. it turned out to be a green cooler with bottles of water inside. the area where it was found is only a few blocks from where a car bomb failed to explode last weekend, you may recall. celebrating mom on wall street yesterday, but it's really been a roller coaster week ending with stocks down for the year. not much celebrating. they bounced up and down all day yesterday in the three major indices ended up substantially lower. they've been sliding for about four straight days. investors are pretty concerned the financial crisis in greece can spread to other countries. they're also worried about the outcome of british elections where no party won a straight majority. police have arrested two teenagers who were allegedly planning a school attack in long island. police say the teens wanted to kill faculty and students at this high school. other teenagers were charged with planning a similar attack at the same school back in 2007. this huge apartment fire in florida burned at least 40 families out of their homes. take a look at the damaged two more yesterday. one man said he grabbed his keys, phone and a bible and was about to jump from a third-floor window when rescuers came to his aid with a ladder. there were no reports of any injuries here. the cause of this fire is under investigation. police in california say they have nabbed a man who had tens of thousands of child porn pictures inside of his home. 57-year-old derrick petrie is behind bars. police in the town of clovis got two tips that led them to him. the investigation took about four months but after they finally arrested him in late april, police say they found a huge amount of evidence. >> we found ten boxes, file boxes, hundreds if not thousands per box and six garbage bags, large, plastic, garbage bags full of these printed image's i i'm concerned as a parent because i do have two boys and for somebody to live so close to us, you know, it's very, very disturbing. >> in all, police say he has more than 130,000 photos with sexual images so does drinking beer on the pitcher's mound. the events that ended with a minor league pitcher being chased off the field. well, it is saturday morning. you're watching hln. so glad you are on this mother's day weekend. i'm susan hendricks. well, our top story takes us to nashville where floods that ravaged the city have also seriously damaged the world famous grand ole opry house. this is some of the first video of the devastation inside the building. look at how bad it is. at the peak of the floods, the opry stage was under two feet of water. last sunday, workers scrambled to move some of the music hall's most precious memorabilia to higher ground as water rushed over a nearby levee. now, despite the flood, the opry staff is promising the show will eventually go on. >> you walk in here right now, and it's just very depressing. but the good news is the soul of the grand ole opry is intact. >> some of the great technology that we have invested in over the years is still intact. and so we'll be able to -- we'll be able to utilize that again when we open back up. >> well, that is good news. plans, meanwhile, are under way to perform opry shows and other venues while repairs to the opry house are under way. it's estimated those repairs will take months, though. the death toll from the floods in tennessee, mississippi and kentucky is now at 31. nashville's mayor estimates his city alone has suffered at least $1.5 billion in damage. but despite the devastation, the floods are also bringing people together. in clarksville, tennessee, some flood victims got help from an army of volunteers, literally an army. soldiers from nearby ft. campbell were given a day off to help people clean up their homes. >> why be in the immediate area and not help, you know? that's what the army does. we have values, and we live for those values. >> soldiers work fast, yes. >> it's been amazing. there's no way we could've done all this. no way. >> yesterday was the first day a lot of the flood victims in clarksville were allowed back in their homes. now, to find out what you can do, how you can make a difference and help people in tennessee, go to impact your world at our website cnn.com/impact. bp workers are putting this oil containment dome over a gushing wellhead in the gulf of mexico. they lowered the dome 5,000 feet to the sea floor. that happened yesterday. well, now they're waiting for it to settle to make sure that it's stable. now, the idea here is to cover the leaking wellhead and then funnel the oil to a surface ship. that will keep the oil from spilling into the gulf. the coast guard says there are no guarantees, though, this plan will work. >> this is the first time this has been tried in this depth of water. and there's lots of firsts we're seeing here. and we have to allow it to -- there's a lot of steps before it actually can be activated so i want to let you know that this is going to take a few days. this is not going to be something instantaneous. and may or may not work. >> the coast guard is trying to minimize the damage from the oil that's already spilled. it says it has already burned thousands of gallons of oil and will do more this weekend. you see it there. it is also dropping oil-dispersing chemicals and skimming oil from the water. despite all that, the massive oil slick has reached louisiana's barrier islands. times square was evacuated for a while yesterday again. but in the end, it was a false alarm. the evacuation came when a suspicious package was found near 45th street and broadway. it turned out to be a green cooler with bottles of water inside. the area where it was found is only a few blocks from where a car bomb failed to explode last weekend, you may recall. celebrating mom on wall street yesterday, but it's really been a roller coaster week ending with stocks down for the year. not much celebrating. they bounced up and down all day yesterday in the three major indices ended up substantially lower. they've been sliding for about four straight days. investors are pretty concerned the financial crisis in greece can spread to other countries. they're also worried about the outcome of british elections where no party won a straight majority. police have arrested two teenagers who were allegedly planning a school attack in long island. police say the teens wanted to kill faculty and students at this high school. the suspects are a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. police say they were texting each other about buying guns and killing someone. and also, searched for info about bomb making online. two other teenagers were charged with planning a similar attack at the same school back in 2007. this huge apartment fire in florida burned at least 40 families out of their homes. take a look at the flames there. it's pretty bad. it started in one unit, raced to the attic and then spread throughout the three-story building. some people escaped with just the clothes they were wearing. >> couldn't breathe at all. it really stunk. my eyes were getting blurry, i couldn't smell anything. i couldn't see. and we ran out to the corner, it wasn't bad yet. then it started getting worse, worse, worse. >> i had to put my hand over her face and run down the stairs. >> they were able to get out. look at here in atlanta. people who live in this apartment complex got a scare, as well. fire destroyed seven units and damaged two more yesterday. one man said he grabbed his keys, phone and a bible and was about to jump from a third-floor window when rescuers came to his aid with a ladder. there were no reports of any injuries here. the cause of this fire is under investigation. police in california say they have nabbed a man who had tens of thousands of child porn pictures inside of his home. 57-year-old derrick petrie is behind bars. police in the town of clovis got two tips that led them to him. the investigation took about four months but after they finally arrested him in late april, police say they found a huge amount of evidence. >> we found ten boxes, file boxes, hundreds if not thousands per box and six garbage bags, large, plastic, garbage bags full of these printed image's i i'm concerned as a parent because i do have two boys and for somebody to live so close to us, you know, it's very, very disturbing. >> in all, police say he has more than 130,000 photos with sexual images of young girls and 4,000 graphic videos on his computers. you never what's lurking around in a mississippi buy you. >> you seen big ones back here like that? this fire is under investigation. police in california say they have nabbed a man who had tens of thousands of child porn pictures inside of his home. 57-year-old derrick petrie is now behind bars. police in the town of clovis got two tips that led them to him. the investigation took about four months but after they finally arrested him in late april, police say they found a huge amount of evidence. >> we found ten boxes, file boxes, hundreds if not thousands per box and six garbage bags, large, plastic garbage bags full of these printed images. >> i'm concerned as a parent because i do southeast, perhaps scattered showers along the i-10 corridor and fairly nice for much of the gulf coast. mid section looks good. scattered snow showers in the central rockies and into the cascades. for your efforts in parts of the gulf coast in terms of trying to harness that oil flow, looks like temperatures mainly in the 80s. waves of one to two feet as that frontal boundary comes through. music hall's most precious memorabilia to higher ground as water rushed over a nearby levee. now, despite the flood, the opry staff is promising the show will eventually go on. >> you walk in here they're waiting for it to settle to make sure that it's stable. now, the idea here is to cover the leaking wellhead and then funnel the oil to a surface ship. that will keep the oil from spilling into the gulf. the coast guard says there are no guarantees, though, this plan will work. >> this is the first time this has been tried in this depth of water. and there's lots of firsts we're seeing here. and we have to allow it to -- there's a lot of steps before it actually can be activated so i want to let you know that this is going to take a few days. this is not going to be something game. that's what they're saying. the news organizations can appeal the decision through the defense department. pakistan's military says it test fired two ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. today's test will likely aggravate pakistan's arch rival india, which is also a nuclear power. now, those two countries have fought three wars since 1947. the new test came just a week after the two sides took steps to improve their relations. well, here's incredible video of an airport cart careening out of control in a busy terminal. it happened in march in houston, the video was released this week. look at that. you can see the cart plow right into a passenger. the driver ended up underneath the car. two other people on the cart were also hurt. apparently someone's bag was on the gas pedal. folks in texas were wondering what a duck was walking back and forth for 12 hours. it turns out she was worried about her ducklings that got stuck in the grate. trying to let someone in clarksville, tennessee, some flood victims got help from an army of volunteers, literally an army. soldiers from nearby ft. campbell were given a day off to help people clean up their homes. >> why could have done all this. no way. >> they got the help they needed. yesterday was the first day a lot of the flood victims in clarksville were allowed back in their homes. times square was evacuated for a while yesterday again. but in the end, it was a false alarm. the evacuation came when a suspicious package was found near 45th street and broadway. it turned out to be a green cooler with bottles of water inside. the area where it was found is only a few blocks from where a car bomb failed to explode last weekend, you may recall. police in california say they have nabbed a man who had tens of thousands of child porn pictures inside of his home. 57-year-old derrick pitre is behind bars. police in the town of clovis got two tips that led them to him. the investigation took about four months but after they finally arrested him in late april, police say they found a huge amount of evidence. >> we found ten boxes, file boxes, hundreds if not thousands per box and six garbage bags, large, plastic, garbage bags full of these printed images. >> i'm concerned as a parent because i do have two boys and for somebody to live so close to us, you know, it's very, very disturbing. >> in all, police say he had more than 130,000 photos with sexual images of young girls and 4,000 graphic videos on his computers. some people in north dakota may have trouble believing it is springtime. take a look at this. it is snow on the ground in marion. that was yesterday. snowfall turned to rain, it didn't last that long, but still, it's may 8th. the temperature dipped below freezing last night. things are expected to get a bit better today. not a whole lot of people will see that snow. a lot of places are in for cool weather, considering it's may. reynolds wolf joins us. how is it looking on this mother's day weekend for all those moms out there? >> so far, so good. in parts of michigan, we're talking about rain. of course, northern michigan, some snowfall, one to two, maybe three inches of snowfall before it switches over to rain. plenty of rainfall in parts of the northeast. follow this frontal boundary down to the southeast, scattered showers along parts of the i-10 corridor. fairly nice for much of the gulf coast. nation's midsection looks good. into the cascades also, plenty of sunshine for the west coast of california. now for your efforts in parts of the gulf coast in terms of trying to harness that oil flow, looks like temperatures will mainly be in the 80s, waves of one to two feet as that frontal boundary comes through at 10 to 15 miles an hour. what about temperatures? what can you expect on your saturday? well, high temperatures across the nation, as you can imagine, little warmer in parts of the southeast where we'll warm up to 84 degrees in new orleans, 89 in tampa. miami with 89 degrees. 75 in new york. 75 in washington. back to denver and salt lake city, 60s and 70s, 58 in san francisco and 89 in las vegas. that is a look at your
