Martha new york pda president mike omara joins us exclusively tonight on the story and moments we will talk to him. That after al sharpton went back on tv today at the floyd memorial in houston calling for someone to pay for what happened. Until these people pay for what they did, then we are going to be there with them, because lives like george will not matter until somebody pays the cost for taking their lives. Martha the Memorial Service today also included a video address for Presumptive Democratic nominee joe biden for his message for George Floyds children. And looking through your eyes, we should also be asking ourselves, why the answer is so often to cruel and painful, why in this nation due too many black americans wake up knowing that they could lose their life in the course of just living their life . Why does justice not roll like a river or like a mighty stream, why . Martha so that was joe biden, he went on to say that we cant turn away from racism, and he talked about systemic abuse as he sees it as a national problem. Shelby steele is a senior fellow at Stanford University hoover institution, the author of shame, how america has passed spins have polarized our country. And finishing a documentary that says what killed michael brown. He has been talking about race in america for decades, he has said that black america has been twice per trade, first by slavery, and then by white guilt efforts to appease it. One of the manifestations may be the latest push to now Defund Police departments across this country. Joining me now. Thank you very much. Its great to have you with us this evening. Thank you for joining me. Thank you for having me. Martha when you listen to those comments today, both by al sharpton, and also by the former Vice President joe biden at George Floyds service in houston today, what goes through your mind . Well, that we live in for a lack of a better term, a white guilt world. What is mr. Biden doing . Does he really deeply care about black america and the problems that we have . Or is he using our pain as a kind of advertisement of his own moral vanity . And he hopes that he is looking for the moral vanity that he thinks will translate into votes and get him elected and so forth, does he know anything at all really about the difficulty is that black face now . Many of which have nothing in the world to do with racism. Well, it is that sort of white guilt exploitation of black pain. Its not to do similar to what segregation did. It also exploited lax, and a much more obvious way. In either case, we end up as blacks dependent on what people like joe biden, the democratic party, american liberalism, what those things do. We in a sentence are dependent on them, and we are trained and encouraged to see our opportunity through them. We have to pressure them and get them to make our lives better. Its not something we do ourselves. Martha what would be the message that you would want to hear from al sharpton, for example, and from joe biden . What would be a better message in your mind . I would want to hear something positive. Black americans, we come from a great people. After all, we endured for cocenturies of the worst oppression known to mankind. We are a great people. This, what happened they minneapolis is an obvious tragedy. But it is not something that is going to interrupt our greatness, and that it is all the more message tells us all the more clearly that we have to be the engineers of our fate. We have to take and be the agents of our fate in america. And we have earned again over the centuries, we have earned the respect of other americans, and we need to go with that, to like ourselves, to respect ourselves, and stopped continually trying to elicit to the joe bidens of the world and that corrupt symbiosis with white guilt, thinking that that is our way ahead, it is not our way ahead, we are our own best resource. And we have to focus on that. Bret martha you say theres never been a better opportunity for africanamericans in the United States . Yes, absolutely. I grew up in segregation in the 50 is 60s in chicago. I know it segregation and racism is like. It is over with. It pops up here or there, it is an impulse in the human condition, but what is different between when i was a young person and today is that there is opportunities absolutely everywhere, everybody from around the world wants to get here and take advantage of our opportunities. We have got to get past the dwelling in our history of victimization, and we have to move into freedom. And sees it. Make something out of it. It breaks my heart to see young people, black lives matter, angry and still going over this victimization as though that is the truth of who we are as a people. Is that we have been victims. What a sad thing to think, what a sad way to think of yourself. And this has gone on to the point where its just painful to see. I want to see young people embracing freedom. Your contribution to your race is what you make of yourself. Its not what your identity gives to you. Its what you give to your identity. And things in the last few days here come a few weeks kind of blur that truth. But it does not obliterate it. Martha you talk about the government, you know, you talk about expanding the territory of entitlements, and i thought today that the Kentucky Governor came out and said this. Watch his comment today if you would. The results of inequality ad health care have been shown, death. My commitment today as we are going to be get an effort to cover 100 of our individuals and are black and africanamerican communities. Martha what is your reaction to that . White guilt, it operates by the arm that is always deference. Where whites win their innocence and their power by deferring to some difficulty that minorities have. Well, we have had 60 years of deference, the Great Society programs, warren property, affirmative action, school busing. Public housing. We have had all of that. We are further behind now that we were back then. Back in the 50s in the early 60s. Because it is not about us. It is about this governor winning power for himself. Appeasing what he thinks his voters want to hear. We are just a tool that he uses in that sense. Martha one of the things that i know you would like to see more focused on based on what i have read of your writing is the element of fathers missing from so many africanamerican families. There are numbers as high as 70 of children growing up without father figures in their home, is that something missing from the dialogue that you would like to hear more up . You say that the government will not read your child a book at night. Thats right. Thats absolutely right. We are sitting here talking about what is going on in minneapolis, and as horrible as that is, and i have nothing against that. We are right to take note of it. But, excuse me. It is not the central problem that black america has. Our central problem is the breakdown of the family. 75 of all black children are born out of wedlock. They dont have a father. They are very few men around in the community. When i was growing up, men were everywhere. Everybody had a dad. A good one or a bad one, but they had one. They perform a great service, irreplaceable. There is no social program, Government Intervention that is going to take the place of that. We as black people need to put more focus and use our imagination to reinforce the institution of marriage and family. Right there, think of the kind of improvement that would make. And that is i would much rather see us talk about that then again the police. Martha dr. Shelby steele, great to have you gone tonight. Good to talk to you. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. Martha so a very powerful defense of the men in blue tonight. Watch this. This is someone in minneapolis, it still has a shine on it, and so do theirs. Martha Police Officers across the United States on the defensive for two weeks bearing the brunt of threatening rhetoric, violent riots, and endless looting. 16 officers shot and hundreds more injured across the country, and they now face calls to defund their departments. Today the president of th the new York State Association of pda said enough is enough. Good afternoon. I am the president of the new York State Association of pda, and i just want to talk to the community and Police Officers. 375 million interactions with the public, 375 million interactions. Overwhelmingly positive responses. Overwhelmingly positive responses, but i read in the papers all week, we all read in the paper that in the black community, mothers are worried about their children getting home from School Without being killed by a cop. What world are we living in . That does not happen. I am not Derek Chauvin, they are not him. He killed someone. We did not. We are restrained. And you know it, i am saying this to all the cops here, because you know what, everybody has tried to shame us. Of the legislation, the press, everybody is trying to shame us. Into being embarrassed about our profession. But you know what, this is insane and is a stain by someone in minneapolis, and so do theirs. Stop treating us like animals and thugs, and start treating us with some respect. Thats what we are here to say. We have been left out of the conversation, we have been vilified. And it is disgusting. It is disgusting. Trying to make us embarrassed of our profession, 375 million interactions, overwhelmingly, overwhelmingly positive. Nobody talks about all the Police Officers that are killed in the last week in the United States of america, and there were a number of them. We dont condone minneapolis. We roundly reject what he did and disgusting, disgusting, that is not what we do. Thats not what Police Officers do. Our legislatures have abandoned us. The press is vilifying us. You know what . I am proud to be a cop. I will continue to be proud to be a cop until the day or retire. And thats all i have. [applause] s bill and joining, new york Police President mike omeara, thank you for being with us tonight. How did this come about . Did you plan to speak out, how did it come about . I did not plan on what i was going to say today, it just kind of was an emotional thing. Based on what you have been seeing, hearing, reading, what is being reported, what is being legislated about our profession over the last week or two, and i am just completely, you know, i come from the other side. Im a Police Officer. I have been a Police Officer for 35 years, and that is not us. You know, i am reading things that dont happen in the real world, and they are becoming a part of this urban lure that does not exist. And we get emotional about it. We try to do a good job. Martha i think that there are more people in this country who understand that today and we are hearing from today, who understand that most Police Officers are there to protect to the public, that every day they take their life into their hands to do so. And we respect and admire Police Officers across the country for what they do. On the other hand, you hear from absolutely. I want to make that very clear. Do you hear from others, i hear from young black men who say that ever since they were children, they were taught to be very careful when they left the house, dont put your hands in your pocket, dont reach for the glove compartment in your car, if anyone approaches you, put your hands where they can see them, that they have this fear, what is that telling you . What do you make of that . Why is that still so pervasive . I think it is because, you know, and like i said, what happened in minneapolis is disgusting. And it is something that the police community, i dont know of any police professional, any Police Officer, any police union that condones that behavior. We find it to be disgusting. And he will go to jail for the rest of his life. However, that becomes the conversation that thats all that the police do. I said it four times today. There are 375 million interactions. Which i think is a lowball number in the United States last year with members of the pull public and Police Officers. Over the last couple of years we have done billions of interactions. 99. 9 percent are positive. Martha yes. And i think that it is a very important. 2 that needs to be made. And what people look at, Derek Chauvin, and i thought it was very powerful when you said i am not Derek Chauvin, none of these people behind you are either. Because if anybody has any feelings at all, was appalled by what they saw when his neck was under that officers need. But i think one of the things people want to know is why, this is an officer who has 17 complaints against him, why was he still on the street . And do you think that is something that needs to be addressed . In your career have you seen people that you thought, you know what, he should not be a cop . He is here for the wrong reason and he is excessive . Yes, and we have had Police Officers involved for many, many years with my police union and members that were terminated. We told members, you should think about resigning. But thats not the majority. Thats not the conversation. The conversation is why does everybody think that we are out killing people, and people cant get to their homes . As an aside, last year we watched, i stood next to pat lynch and we watch videos of people dumping water on the cops as they walked around new york city. Do not look like they were very scandalous. All im saying is that we interact with the community in a very high level with social workers, with marriage counselors, we do everything that everybody feels that. We can involved in peoples lives at a very high level. Sometimes it gets emotional and sometimes it gets dangerous. And sometimes it is a bad situation. But that is the overwhelming majority of Police Officers and their interactions with the public are positive. And we cant keep saying that the police have a systemic racist thugs that are out there. We are not. We are not. We are your friends. We are your neighbors, we are your coaches of your children and we come to your homes. And we come to your problems, and we come when you are sick. And we come when you are having an issue, and we try to be the good person and try to be an answer in that situation, and 99. 99 of the time it comes out. And then you have Derek Chauvin. And Derek Chauvin will go to jail for the rest of his life for what he did, and he should. Theres nobody that condones that. Martha i want to play, i hear you. This from mayor de blasio, and there is also some sound in here from mayor frey from minneapolis. So just listen to this. And i want to your reaction on the other side if i could. George floyd cannot be allowed to die in vain. We have to make a change in this country. All right [bleep] martha mayor de blasio was booed in brooklyn because he would not come out strongly enough against the police and Excessive Force cases, the mayor of minneapolis was booed out of that square, because he refused to say that he wanted to abolish the police. You have obviously more experience with mayor de blasio, what would you say to him tonight in terms of the support for the police force in new york . I got to say, when mayor de blasio is not progressive enough for the progressives, then we are living in an alternate universe, because i dont know anybody more progressive than him. All i can say is that we are here. We told our legislators, we have told our police commanders, we have told the community. We want to be a partner. We want to talk about it. Do you want to talk about reforms, we will sit at the table and talk about reforms. Want to talk about how we can do our job better, we would love to hear it. We want to do our job better. And we dont want the situations where we have these tense atmospheres that bothered the members of the public and police. We want to fix it. No one is talking to us. All they are doing is throwing stones at us. And it is hard. It is hard for us. It really is. And i know that i know people are going to say oh, the poor cop. Its not, but we have to be part of the conversation. Martha that seems fair enough. Michael omeara, Police Officer for many years in new york, thank you for speaking with us in moving the conversation forward. Thanks, martha. Martha you bet. It has been hard to keep up with the changing narrative on covid19, its where a some dramatic carriers to transmit the virus, brit hume on keeping up with all of this next. We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed Contract Tracing following asymptomatic cases, contacts, and not finding secondary transmission onward, it is very rare. Martha then the same doctor today walked that back a bit. Watch this. We do know that some people who are asymptomatic or people who do not have symptoms can transmit the virus on. What we need to better understand is how many other people in the population dont have symptoms. Martha so that got a ton of attention. The whole reason essentially for the shutdown of on the economy and businesses and schools and colleges and churches was that the virus was being spread by young people who had no symptoms. It was easier to track those sick, but masks and stay at home was due to the fear that there were silent transmitters in large numbers out there. We are asking the Younger Generation to stop going out in public places, to bars and restaurants and spreading asymptomatic virus on to countertops and knobs and Grocery Stores and grocery carts. So many people are asymptomatic, and people literally dont know they have the coronavirus but have the ability to infect others. When we came out with the cdc guidelines of face masks or what we called face coverings was in recognition of the growing understanding of asymptomatic infection, or presymptomatic infection. Martha you remember all of that, senior political analyst brit hume, thank you for coming on tonight. What is your reaction, when you watch that to recap of how all over the place this discussion has been . My first thought goes to School Children, because we know that School Children themselves are not much affected by this virus. So the thought was that you close the schools not so much to protect them from getting it, but to protect the asymptomatic children, from going to school and infecting the teachers. That was the only rationale that made any sense for closing down the schools. Now that whole question is up in the air as to whether these little kids, and i dont think there had been any studies except for one in australia that suggested that the children do not spread the disease. So that is one whole big piece of this that has been so taxing to families and two kids themselves based on a myth of asymptomatic transition by children. And now of course the whole question of asymptomatic transmission throughout the population is up in the air. And the World Health Association cannot seem to figure out daytoday what it thinks. Martha obviously there is a big policy investment from the highest office in this country into this idea. And this locked down, and saying that it had to happen, because if it had not, millions of people would have gotten sick, now we lost 100,000, more than that americans, and that is obviously a tragic loss for all of those families, but from a policy perspective, there is a big investment in making sure that this narrative holds on. Yes, there sure is, martha. And it is troubling, because we have known from the beginning about the disease that it primarily affects the elderly and those with preexisting conditions of a certain nature. Particularly respiratory problems. And when we got on this path of lockdown, we imposed this on everybody. And on top of that, in many places, new york and new jersey, we did a terrible job of protecting the elderly. And thats why they have been so many deaths in these Nursing Homes is that we did not deal with that properly, so it turned out that the governors who targeted for protection, the elderly, such as in florida did very well and were able to open up sooner than new york which has had a terrible outcome with countless people dying in Nursing Homes. So i think that we reacted improperly to what we already knew, and we acted on things we do not really know, such as how much asymptomatic transmission there is. So thats why were paying a terrible price. And martha, the economy did a great jobs report. I would advise people to not get very excited about that. Because there is always going to be a surge of hiring when things open up by businesses that were Strong Enough to stay in business. But down the road we will find out about the businesses who are not Strong Enough, and the job loss from that. And my fear about that is that it will not be a pretty picture. Martha i think you are right about that, there are a lot of jobs that Companies Say they do not need to rehire, and that will leave a portion of people out of luck in a tough way. Or they cant rehire. Thank you, martha. Martha thank you. Coming up, mayor de blasio promises to paint black lives matter on the streets of all five boroughs in manhattan, Marc Thiessen and Richard Fowler coming up next. Martha in a similar move to what we saw in d. C. Where the street leading to the white house was painted black lives matter in a nearby applause renamed new york city bill de blasio announced today that a street in each of the five boroughs will be named in honor of the black lives matter movement. What will be clear is the street name, on the streets for the city is that message that now the city must fully, fully, deeply feel, and the nation must as well that black lives matter. Martha this comes as a movement to Defund Police continuous, bill de blasio saying he will reallocate police funds to the youth social services, head of the police union fought back against the narrative, shaming their profession. Nobody talks about all of the Police Officers that were killed in the last week in the United States of america, and there were a number of them. The legislatures abandon us. The press and vilifying us. Do you know what, guys . I am proud to be a cop. Martha joining me now, Marc Thiessen, scholar and cohost of the American Enterprise institute podcast. And Richard Fowler, National Podcast host. Both are fox news contributors, gentlemen, thank you for being here. Richard, let me start with you coming your reaction to good to see you, your reaction to the police union had michael omearas very impassioned statement about his profession and the way that he approaches his work on the way that he believes 99 of cops do as well. I also got a chance to listen to the entire interview, and i am happy that he is willing to work with people in the community, talking about how we need change. We saw that was introduced this week by the black caucus is just that. Can we Work Together to abandon the toe hold that killed eric gardner and killed george floyd. Lets be very real here, Police Department have n no more responsibility. When you get a badge and you are paid by taxpayers to serve the community, you are given a gun to serve the community, you should be given more responsibility. You should be given more accountability. There should be more transparency. Thats what the protesters in the communitys are asking for it. We just want some transparency. Martha i hear you, but let me ask you something, what do you say to him. What do you say to him when you see him speaking the way that he was . He has devoted his whole life to taking care of people in new york city. He gets up every morning like all of those Police Officers do when they put on the badge and their families dont know whether or not they will come home that night either. So what do you say to him about to that part of the story . He is interested in talking about reform and i think that is a pretty clear unanimous statement across the country when it comes to that. But as a man to a man, when you watch what he says, what do you feel . I will tell you one thing that stood out for me, he said that cop serve as social workers and they serve in all these different roles, he has absolutely right. We need to ensure that our system meets the needs of communities, all different types. We need to hire more social workers to deal with issues that involve Mental Health. More Mental Health care professionals so that cops are not responding to Mental Health calls, currently that does not exist in the current system, and as a result of that, Police Respond to Mental Health instead of deescalating, they actually escalate situations. Martha he is saying that we are doing everything we are called upon to do and we get the gamut of responsibilities when we go out there every day. Mark, what are your thoughts . He has absolutely right to the 99. 99 of the cops are good cops that are doing the best. They are doing everything for the community. They are the people that you call when you really need help. And he is right about that. What we need to do is figure out a way to get rid of the bad cops. The biggest problem we have, and richard is right that we should get some legislation on capitol hill, there are limited things you can do from washington, but it is a local issue that comes down to unions, so why is it so hard to fire a bad teacher . Because of the teachers union. It makes it impossible to get rid of bad teachers, its the same thing with the police union at the local level, this is why the democrats will have a big problem what you need is collective bargaining reform coming in eight a state and local Community Get rid of these rules that make it impossible to get rid of bad cops, and thats going to take some of something that the democrats dont want to do, which is the challenge to unions. Martha we have to leave it there, thank you very much, gentlemen. If so coming up, former nfl star ben watson on what it means to kneel in this fight. As more and more players suggest that they will do so when the league returns, we will talk about that and also his Prayer Initiative in boston coming up next. Martha so the backlash was swift for new Orleans Saints quarterback drew brees after those comments from fellow nfl players. He quickly apologized and vowed to do better. His team is using the anthem when the saints go marching in to show support for the protest going live. When the saints go marching in when the saints go marching in oh how i want to be in that number when the saints go marching in martha joining me now, ben watson, former nfl player and author of under our skin, getting free from fears and frustration that bind us. Thank you for being on the program. I guess i want to start with your reaction to the drew brees situation. I know that he has a friend and someone that you have played with for quite some time. What exactly does he need to do better . He said that he pledged to do better, what do you think that he needs to do better . I think doing better all circles around empathy. Ive talked to drew. Many people know him as you mention. He apologized for what he said. His stance has been his stance for a very long time, but within that there is some nuance. M right now especially with what the country is going through, it is about how you phrase your statements and about empathy and listening. All the things that makes drew a great leader, and all of the things that he plans to end has done since and things that he will be focused on going forward. This is going to be one of those rallying cries for that team, especially. But also around the league when you see people go through this kind of transformation of having certain conventions which are fine, but being able to speak to and to listen to the opinions in the views of others. Martha what he said was that he would never he did not want anyone to disrespect to the flag. And i think when a lot of people listen to that they dont see anything wrong with that statement, what is wrong with that statement . In it of itself, there is nothing wrong with that statement. It is about timing, it is about listening and feeling the tone of what is going on in the country. Speaking to drew, and he said this in his apology, he would love to come back and steer it another way and presented in a different way than how it came out and how it was represented. But since we are here and people are protesting and really hurt, and struggling over years of injustice, not just george floyd, the reaction was an outcry that matched the moment. We need to have differing views on things like this and still respect each other stance. Martha this is Roger Goodell statement after he said that he thinks everyone should stand for the national anthem, now he says this. We had the National Football league admit that we were wrong for not listening to nfl players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully prote protest. We the National Football league believe black lives matter. I personally protest martha ben, what do you think will happen when football starts again . Do you think entire teams will kneel . The owners, the coaches . What do you expect to happen . Im not sure, but i am proud of our players. They have always been at the forefront of bringing injustices of all types, not just Police Brutality or things like racism, but sex trafficking or sexual abuse, you see a change happening not only in the nfl, but around the country. So i am looking forward to seeing what is going to happen. I cant tell you that guys will kneel, but i know that they will be involved like never before. Martha i have to leave it there.
