Obama team, joe biden is going all land that president obama will help him at won, whether he wants to or not. Watch this brandnew iowa ad. We have to beat donald trump. Dont he pulls agree joe biden is the strongest democrat . No one is more qualified. For eight years president obama and Vice President biden where the Administration America could be proud of. Our allies could trust and our kids could look up to. Martha that is the theme and he hit on again. Watch. When barack obama and i got elected, the bottom had fallen out of the economy. Donald trump inherited a growing economy from the obama joe Biden Administration just like he inherited everything. Martha now joe bidens wife has telling voters they should put aside their reservations about her husband. The key selling point is beating President Trump. Health care. You have to look at who was going to win back the selection and may be you have to swallow a little bit to say okay, i like soandso better, but the bottom line has to be that we have to beat donald trump. Martha in a moment Katie Pavlich and Juan Williams joined me here, but first up the senator and friend, good to see you. Thank you for being here. Part of that story that says back then when joe biden washed out before iowa he said, you were smart to get out of this thing. I never should have run and i never had a chance. Do you remember that story . It was a very gracious and endearing thing for him to say. It was in the senate gym, so those conversations are mostly off the record. He was saying i gave it a shot and you have a superstar like barack obama and Hillary Clinton and john edwards, nobody else had a chance. He was saying Something Like that to be nice to me. Martha what do you make of the fact that the obama team is so reticent and expressed on a pretty regular basis, David Axelrod has had a number of things on twitter that are not encouraging to joe biden. What you make of that . Im sure they have mixed feelings. On one hand there is a personal fondness that the times article pointed out. They have served together for eight years at the same time they may be afraid of David Axelrod or others, they may be afraid of joe biden does not do well in this campaign then that could tarnish the obama legacy which is ironic because in these debates some of the other candidates are attacking the policies on immigration where they arrested a Record Number of Illegal Immigrants and joe biden was defending the former president s record, but im sure that as some cognitive dissonance that is going on. Martha we look at the latest fox news poll, joe biden at 29 , Bernie Sanders at 15 , Elizabeth Warren draw the biggest crowds. She is picking up a head of steam. When you look at the next one that show joe biden versus tromp, this latest poll shows joe biden handily beating the president with a National Poll early in the game. Elizabeth warren versus president rouhani. Do you think that joe biden is the only candidate who has the potential to beat President Trump . No. A lot of things can change. I think at this moment he has the best chance. Take these National Polls with a grain of salt and as he pointed out, take it with several grants of assault and focus on iowa where Elizabeth Warren seems to be surging and have bypassed Bernie Sanders. If you were to beat sanders you might see the liberal vote consolidate behind her and that had to head matchup to be much closer. My own personal view is that the more moderate candidate that the democrats nominate the better chance we have of winning, but its not unknown for the Democratic Party to sometimes go off in a fairly aggressive direction with some adverse consequences. Martha harry reid who we havent heard from in a while has been typing up and talking about that. He said there are so many more important things to do. Decriminalizing border crossings is not something that should be on top of the list. It should be down by the bottom. Do you agree with him . Surely candidates listen to his experience . I do. Coming into the country illegally ought to be more serious than basically jaywalking. There has to be a consequence for that. There has to be an orderly process that people follow. Another example, joe biden is defending obamacare. It wasnt perfect, but he is not all the way they are for medicare for all which should be a government takeover. Martha even joe biden has talked about decriminalizing a lot of elements of this. Are you shocked at what you hear on this front when you look at that debate stage . The debate has definitely moved. I know he has been attacked by some of the others for the record of the Obama Administration where they were apprehending Illegal Immigrants. There is no question the debate has moved that may come back to haunt whoever the nominee is because these elections tend to be one in the center. The left will vote for the democratic nominee no matter what. Its the moderates in the center who are looking for something stable and dependable and if we go off too far, i will take the devil i know rather than the devil i dont. Martha thank you very much. Good to see you. Always a pleasure. As the shovel and jockeying within the democratic primary continues, one headline got some interest. The American Spectator saying why tromps Approval Rating is up among minorities. We have some other numbers to look at as well but lets talk about it with Katie Pavlich and a Fox News Contributor and Juan Williams, cohost of the five great to have you guys with us. Katie let me start with you. What did you think about that piece . We try to find numbers that mirror that. If you look at the way that president tromp has gone after minority groups he doesnt believe they are minorities. He believes they are american they have had some trouble when it comes to unemployment and crime and so he has tried to implement policies that benefit them economically and criminal Justice Reform is not something he ran on but its something he brought on to have the agenda of the white house so far. When it comes to the campaign trail he is going to be accused of racism, all of these things that we have seen from democrats as a superficial argument. He can point to his record and say if you will accuse me of these things, why would i take the very significant time and energy and resources within my administration to go after these issues which have proven results. Republicans have been accused for a very long time of ignoring certain parts of the country, nobody groups in the fight that some of them have faced and he said, we are going after this demographic and we have results. Martha here are some other numbers. These are from recent president ial elections. We have president clinton getting 89 of the africanamerican vote. President tromp got a present, there was a lot at the time of the upward movement and that is still very small, but some of the other was that we looked at, it showed that it has been declining over recent months and i wonder if that isnt partly due to all of this talk about racist, racist. Is that eroding some of his support from people that may have been supportive . You are talking about a guy who rode a book about President Trumps racism a year ago. Trump has been making a big push on Jewish Voters and today he says if you are jewish and you dont vote for republicans, its almost like he was on the offensive with ilhan omar and Rashida Tlaib and now he has stepped in it again because i think his words could be interpreted as antisemitic. Martha i think he is pointing out how that voting bloc has voted before. You look at the catholic vote and you say, are you prochoice or prolife . People say how could you possibly vote democrat if you are prolife and to me its a symbol or discussion. I think this is a little dicier and i understand your point, but when you start to go down that path you put the Jewish Community in a very sensitive position and my thought on the black vote is quite similar, its not so much that people say racism because its a race card, its his own behavior and when people stop and have conversations about how he has dealt with White Nationalism and the increase and hate crimes in the country. People are discomforted if not alarmed. I think this is a big distraction from how antisemitic the Democratic Party has become, two democratic woman who wanted to go on a trip that condones suicide bombings. The jewish issue is one thing, but when it comes to the minority vote in the africanamerican vote you saw the numbers and yes they are small, President Trump got more of the africanamerican vote and the two previous democratic contenders and if you look at how he is approaching this from policy, the reason they are so worried about him going into communities, they change that vote they would make the election again. Martha if you stop dealing in what many people refer to and rightfully so as identity politics, if that goes away and if you start treating everybody like a person and not a black boater or a jewish boater or a catholic voter, which i think is the way people arent moving anyway and i do think that is why you have this voter basis shifting a little bit. You bluecollar voters who are democratic voters who voted for President Trump so we have to be careful about speaking in those terms as we look at this election and also to some extent, looking at these polls, im not sure they accurately reflect and thats why i think these numbers are all over the place. If you look at the most recent fox poll, 58 of americans of all colors including the majority of white sand President Trump is tearing the country to parts. In the context of people saying we are worried about the polarization in the product nation of america if that is the case, you understand people who are not locked into any identito believe in america as a number one identity are saying something is wrong here. We are concerned, the big point we go back to joe biden. Joe biden right now is leading because moderate and conservative democrats overwhelmingly say he is the guy that can get us back to normal. Its like dorothy going back to kansas. Martha why do you think that is . What is he seeing when he says, i dont know if this will work . I dont think he is saying that at all. He had lunch with joe biden last month. I think what he has said to joe biden and use ideas in the New York Times piece, you dont have to do this. His age, the death of his son, the fact that he has lost previously. That is what president obama saw, but its not the case. Back to the voting issue i think we dont give people enough credit for being pragmatic. The Virginia Governor was caught in a kkk garb and they said we want to move on, so on that issue we should assume everyone will be so offended. The problem with joe biden is that he is running on Barack Obamas legacy. People want him to move on with that and that is why they elected donald trump and if he cant run on his own policies on his own two feet against Elizabeth Warren then he is not going to win that primary. Martha he has to present his own positive vision for the future. We dont have to have a constant division and static that President Trump has brought. Brought. For a lot of people. It comes from both sides. Martha that is apparent. Thank you. As that u. S. Negotiates a peace deal with the taliban including the withdrawal of u. S. We are not supposed to be a police force and if i have said and i will say it a number of times and this is not using nuclear, we could wind that were in a week if we wanted to fight it, but im not looking to kill 10 million people. Im not looking to kill 10 million afghans because that is what would have to happen. Martha all of this is coming to a head as the United States is reportedly close to peace talks with the tallow band, those talks have continued tonight and President Trump said he will scale back troops, but perhaps keep some presence there. That is part of the discussion. Growing concerns about isis regaining strength in the area. This weekend they claimed responsibility for a deadly attack at a wedding that killed 63 people and wounded nearly 200 and secretary of state mike pompeo declared today that isis still has resources, loyal fighters and is fighting for a comeback. Joining me now, retired general and chairman of the institute of the study of war and a fox news senior strategic analyst. Good to see you. What concerns you about this potential deal . What concerns me the most is at the taliban put on the table the only thing that we will discuss is a complete u. S. Withdrawal and we have exceeded to that. Eventually i believe that if everything goes as planned they will be an announcement made that the United States as a deal with the tele band that we will withdraw all of our troops by the end of 2020 based on the conditions that are established inside the country in terms of the potential threat to the American People at home. That and other factors of the deal between the taliban and the afghan government. The conditions that therell be no threat from afghanistan to the homeland are flawed. Its the al qaeda that we are concerned about. We drove them out of there because of 9 11 and we kept our foot on the throat, if we pull out of their they will kill again. What is the taliban doing right now . They are telling the al qaeda guys to lay low, to increase your activity or your fighters, wait for the americans to leave. They will be gone by 2020. Come out of your hiding places and pakistan and reestablish. Martha the president looks at these numbers. 18 years, 2200 u. S. Service members killed, 850 billion. He made it clear he wants to have a much smaller payment footprint. He feels like this money has not provided us with the security that it was supposed to provide us with an secretary mike pompeo talks about how, isis is expanding in different places. My focus all the strength . Why not split up these groups that are watching them and move them around. First of all lets talk about the 18 years. What did we get from that . We went in there to destroy al qaedas base and make certain we never have them reattached to the United States so for 18 years we have prevented that. That was our goal. Martha if we leave, thats over . Its guaranteed they will reestablish a base with the potential to attack. We are the number one strategic martha how many people do you need there . The numbers we are talking about are eight or 9,000. Thats modest. Martha till 2024 . Thats modest. The threat of al qaeda. In terms of the money, the money is exaggerated. The actual money according to the dob is 23,000,000,000. 6 billion of that goes to the afghans. We can zero that out. Some creativity, that can be done. The afghans can get the interest for 30 years based on a goal they have and give billions of dollars. We can zero that 6 billion out. Now we are in the teens. Is that worth security for the American People . I say yes. Martha we will see where that goes. There is an agreement that is supposed to be announced fairly soon. That is our understanding. I think its likely to be announced sometime next week. Martha i want to ask you a quick question. The groundbased missile launch. The first since we pulled out of the treaty that we were in with a long time with russia and obviously they were violating it. Now you have russia saying, we are not going to get into a big expensive arms race with the United States. China is saying, the same thing. What do you say . Its in absurdity what they are saying. Lets review what the facts are. The treaty, 1987, Tactical Nuclear weapons ranging from 50. Nobody will possess that. Thats what we did. Who was the first one to violate that . Russia. They deployed it on their border. Not too surprising. What have we done . We came out of the treaty because of that. We asked them to give up those weapons, back to the subscription and they said no. The chinese are not a part of that treaty. They have thousands of these. If not hundreds, thousands. That is the absurdity from the comment of theirs to go and what the United States is doing is frankly trying to build the capability to have credible deterrence. The australians just came out with a report that said, it echoed what the commissioner on the defense of National Security said, if the United States had to fight a war in the western pacific today against china, we are outgunned and they have more ships than weve got. We would be challenged. Martha thank you. Its about deterrence. Martha good to see you. Thank you. Martha President Trump addressing fears of a looming recession at the white house today calling warnings that we might be heading to one. When asked about reports at the white house is prepping for an economic slow down, particularly with plans with payroll tax cuts. This is what the president said. We are looking at various tax reductions, but im looking at that all the time anyway. Payroll taxes, something we think about and people would like to see that. That very much affects the workers of our country. Martha also breaking tonight, a phone call between President Trump on the head of the nra over the ongoing push to do something about these horrific done episodes, violence, killings we have seen. What would happen . We have had two Mass Shootings in recent weeks, what was discussed between the two men remains unclear. According to the nra the president agreed to take universal background checks off the table, but the white house says the context is not correct. Christian fisher live in washington with what we know about all of this tonight. Its a little confusing. The nra says President Trump called it ceo this afternoon and assured him that universal background checks are off the table, but the white house is saying this is not new. The president never supported universal background checks. Either way, heres the president and the oval office sounding a lot less enthusiastic about any kind of background check. We have very strong background checks right now. We have missing areas and areas that dont complete the whole circle. We are looking at different things. Here is the president less than two weeks ago a few days after the mass shooting in el paso and dayton. I think we can do meaningful, very meaningful background checks. I want to see it happen. I have a lot of support and they also have the support of other people from the other side. I think the democrats and republicans have a chance to come together. A spokesperson for joe manchin, the tom said theyt been told to stand down, but it would not be surprising if the president told him that because he has in it before. After a shooting in parkland, florida, President Trump supported background checks but backed down after the pressure with the nra, now that appears to be happening all over again. The question is, what happens when Congress Returns in september after the august recess because guncontrol is going to be front and center on capitol hill. Martha you are right about that. When everybody gets back it will be a big issue and god forbid we have another shooting, but unfortunately it seems to keep happening and there is always this push to do something. We will see what the meaning of meaningful is, will talk to somebody tomorrow night. Thank you very much. Martha classic scene from animal house pointing out the value of higher education, but it turns out that a lot of americans are questioning the value of college and there is a partisan divide on this issue. Take a look at these new findings, in the past few years theres been a big increase in the number of republicans who say colleges and universities have a negative impact on the contrary, but among democrats thats not the case. What is going on here . Lets bring in Marc Thiessen and robin bureau, former Campaign Director for president obama. Robin come i will start with you. What is going on here . There is a lot to unpack here. What was interesting to me was that 20 of democrats thought that way. If we were to look at that it has to do with the rising cost of education. When textbooks cost you 200 a piece and you come out with his huge student debt and colleges are basically a checkbox and it doesnt have the value it once did. I also think it comes to people like Rush Limbaugh was talking since the 80s about colleges and dr. Rating liberals. Martha we know that most professors all across the country, an overwhelming majority of them are liberal. Id like to think that they teach Critical Thinking and how to analyze these situations. Martha i hope so. Let me bring you in here. Your thoughts on the big picture . First of all, there is a difference between most people recognize that College Degree is incredible valuable and if you earned a College Degree you will have 25,000 a year more than a High School Degree over a lifetime working, thats a milliondollar indifference. Everyone agrees that college is worth it if you can afford it and go, the difference is that they disagree over whether colleges are hasbeens joe said are a doctor a indoctrinating. In the 1960s, bill buckley said i would rather be governed by the first 2,000 names in the directory than the faculty of harvard college. That has intensified in recent years because what you are seeing on the right and the left is a change in the two institutions. Workingclass voters are leaving the Democratic Party for the Republican Party all suburban elites in the last couple of elections have moved and conservatives are becoming a movement of the working class and democrats were always a party of the urban elites, but now the suburban elites. Martha i want to show you an interesting chart here. Its a little confusing but we will show it to you. Those who say that race should not be a factor in admission are the red parts, asian, hispanic, black, white all say race should not be a factor in admission and robin, that is not the case. Its not the case and i agree with those in the red. I dont think it should be as much as a factor. I have to talk about some of this, the antiintellectualism. It bothers me that there is a mindset that your ignorance is as good as my education, a famous quote by isaac asimov. I hope that is not what we are seeing. Martha nobody wants people to not be intellectuals. People want to have all kinds of thoughts so that by the time you graduate you have a good grasp on different political theories and different ways of thinking so that you can be exposed to a lot of different ideas and you come out saying, heres what i think. That has a big difference between republicans and democrats on their views of college. 0. 75 up republicans say college dis incentivizes exposure to different ideas only 31 of democrats feel that way and 79 of republicans a professors bring their political ideology into the classroom and also republicans by large majority think that 67 say that bias in the colleges is a major problem. What is happening is that people on the right, people value a College Education and think its a good thing and they want their kids to learn, but they feel that instead what they are getting in a lot of cases at the elite institutions is indoctrination. Martha good to see you. The next story, investigating the crisis in our society. This is so disgusting. Have you seen this . Its lying out in the streets of San Francisco. The latest Homeless Count reached a thousand people and they say 35 of unsheltered homeless citizens live in vehicles. While the number cant be precise, theres a chance its beyond 30. Claudia count has been missed speaking with travelers and she joins us now good evening, its catching passengers by surprise and those who wanted to buy a bottle of water, starbucks on the other restaurants here at San Francisco international these bottles off their shelf and sending them back to suppliers. Airport officials trying to change peoples behavior in the name of saving the environment and they are encouraging flyers to bring their own reusable bottles and fill up with tapwater. We we have over 100 points where you can fill up with water and that gets you out of having to buy something every time you are at airport. I think its a really positive move and im proud of the city of San Francisco for being aware and taking action to save our planet. The band does not apply to soft drinks, tea, juice and that has some shaking their law and worrying this could do more harm than good. The Vice President of the bottled Water Association says if consumers cant get a bottled water product in the preferred plastic container they are likely to purchase a less Healthy Beverage which will increase the amount of weight generated. Still airport Officials Say 10,000 Water Bottles are sold here every day, the airports goal is to send a zero waste to landfills by 2021 and San Francisco leaders say this is a step in the right direction. They have already taken a step against banning straws and plastic bags and they will go after those sugary drinks eventually. Martha heads up. Thank you very much. The other big story out of San Francisco which has been taking a lot of news over the last news and months. The homeless crisis that continues to grow as residents are struggling to find concern for their own safety and their quality of life. The problem is only getting worse and the city. Some businesses are now being forced to shatter their doors and move out. Fox news went there for a deep dive investigation. Watch this. Why do the police let it go on . Is it because of that bill they passed that makes everything a misdemeanor so its not worth the cops time. The Supreme Court gave a rule like that of the overcrowding any californians prison was cruel and unusual punishment. We are finding that homelessness is increasing, drug addiction and people, the numbers are increasing. This is like a homeless camp. They are building too many condominiums. High cost of living which pushes Affordable Housing and shelters. The government is enforcing and promoting. The more you give almost people to help them, the byproduct of that is more homeless people. At one point to the logos los here say weve had enough . Martha ben carson, secretary, good to see why thank you for coming back. What is your reaction to that piece . What we need to be talking about is common sense. We seem to have lost common sense and what we are seeing across the country, the places that have the most regulatory barriers are the places that drive the costs up for people can afford things and also we have lost our understanding of what real compassion is. People who are incapable of taking care of themselves and leaving them on the street, sleeping in their feces, thats not compassionate. That exposes them to all kinds of germs and diseases. We really need to stop and take a deep breath and say, what makes sense and those are the things we should do. Bear in mind this only seems to occur in places that have massive amounts of regulation. Martha thats fascinating. Give me a couple of things that you think could fix San Franciscos problem . If they were so inclined to do so, right now they are doing building apartments that cost 70 million and that obviously will only help 72 people and who knows what happens after they move in, what would you advise him to do . The president s counsel on eliminating barriers for Affordable Housing and that is what i would start doing. Its mostly the local regulations, the restrictions and the density restrictions. The water, the firemen, all of these things. We can do these in a reasonable way so we dont drive the prices. The National Association of homebuilders says more than 25 of the cost of a singlefamily home is regulations and for multifamilies its up to 42 . Youll never get a hold of it. You have to deal with those things. Martha you heard one of those people in other folks as well blaming Companies Like twitter and other companies that have moved into the area. That young man who said, they have built all these condominiums and that forced people out into the street. Does that make sense to you . In San Francisco in particular a single individual can voice opposition to development of something that is affordable and stop it. That doesnt make any sense. Martha they dont want it on their own backyard . They dont want Affordable Housing in their neighborhood. They have billionaires and San Francisco. I want to play this for you. A woman sent a message on her way to her business. Watch this. This video is for gavin newsom. I want to tell you what happens when i get to work. I have to clean him up the poop and the pee, i have to clean up the syringes, i care for these people and i have to ask them to move their tents. We have tried her hardest and now we have to change that because of your lives. What are you going to do for us . Martha talk about common sense. Those are common sense complaints complaints as a business order. That is what common sense is all about. We have to start listening to everybody. Not just take a certain segment and say we have to do everything for them. 700,000 for an apartment, how many people could you take care of . It doesnt mean they have to live in squalor, there are wonderful innovative techniques that have come to bear for singlefamily and multifamily. We cannot use them. We need to get rid of those or modify them and a logical and intelligent way. That is what we are doing and hopefully in california as well. Martha have they reached out and said lets get together and lower these regulations . Find places where they can live and sleep. There are some concessions. It would be funny to do a pulse on time and asked people who live in washington, d. C. , have you ever met joe biden personally . Question mike i bet a strikingly large percentage would say yes. He has been in washington for it forever. How long . Here some perspective. Joe biden first ran for president more than 30 years ago. Didnt go well, to put it mildly. At the time, biden was caught stealing details from another mans biography, neil connect. Of course, he dropped out in a humiliating scandal. People who knew him always thought he would try again for the presidency and of course, he is. This year seems a pretty strange time to do it. Its hard to imagine a candidate more out of step with
