The feds say they can spy on our cars, take pictures and track where were going and how, and they want to expand the Program Throughout the United States. Thanks so much to you, the federal government, from the bottom of our hearts. This is all according to the reporting of the wall street journal which report this Justice Department already has a database tracking millions of cars on major u. S. Highways. The Drug Enforcement administration started the program in 2008. Always about Drug Enforcement. They did it to monitor drug traffickers along the border with mexico, what they expanded as the government tends to do the database used license plate readers that collect dat at that time a cars moms in realtime. Cameras can tick photos of drivers drivers and passengers and the images are clear enough for investigators to identify suspects or innocents. The paper reports more and more Law Enforcement agencies are now using the dea system, and that investigators have tapped into the it tapped into to track suspects in cases that have nothing to do with drugs like kidnappings and rapes. A Justice Department Spokesman Says the feds quote limit who can access the database and all of the license information is deleted after 90 days. Isnt it . Lets bring in john bussey, the associate editor of the wall street journal which broke the story. They watch us everyone. You look skeptical. What do we have . The dea set this up to track drug cases, to try to get forfeiture of assets people found guilty of a drug crime, had to give over the cash and cars and homes. That expanded just as you said, to include searching and for other crimes kidnappings other times searching for sides who were kidnapped. That was appealing to local Law Enforcement officials. But the question is, how much is society going to give up its privacy in an effort to track crime and to bust criminals . Well in the past, we bet judges decide that. And that system seemed to work. Thats a point made in the article today, which is that the concern is that it kind of in a zone of secrecy, not something that was openly debated. I suspect youll be able to go back and find where there was some debate that occurred but its not something that you and i knew about before driving down i95, and theres a lot of these cameras around now. Aexpanded to a lot of the major interstates that were being tracked. Its reading our license plate. They know where we are when were going of. If you have gone throw times to the 7eleven to get cheetos, thats known. They would say this is worth serious crime. Get real we need this in the day and age of hightech to deploy the hightech to catch criminals. They want to expand it to every nook and cranie of the nation. If youre a law. Agent, you want to be able to use every device at your disposal. The question now is going to be, is the public going to say thats okay, look, i dont care if im going to the hamptons or driving down to baltimore doesnt bother me if somebody tracks me or will they say i dont want to be tracked itch its one more intrusion into my privacy i just dope like. The idea hip it from the very beginning was, you never know what kind of government youre going to end up having you. Might be just fine with the kind of government we have right now. Once they have all of this by the way nothing sacred, nothing is secure. Ask edward snowden. Thats thats right. A lot of people feel that way. This could be used may be just the exact government we have but might be a Political Party in office that raids an office in the watergate hotel, or uses this in some sort of malicious way. The other debate that is going on is this whole asset forfeiture, seizure, that whole thing where its been done arguably sometimes when the person has not yet been convicted. Thats in itself a whole area of controversy. Now this tech is being used to forward that goal. Careful when you give away a little privacy, theyll eventually take it all. Thats a possibility here and thats the concern, the core of the debate. The article is great at wsj. Com, up there right now. I. Lawmakers pushing for new sanks against iran. The massive northeast blizzard has crushed some parts of the region but in others it was little more than your average winter storm. Now meteorologists are apologizing for predicting a snow disaster here in new york city. Officials shut down the tristate area after forecasters warned of potential catastrophic weather event that never came. New yorkers can be a tough crowd. The past they would leave the subways open and you know the dangers and of you want to risk it, you risk it and thats how it worked. Not this time. They nanny stated us and some people are angry. And sarcastic, a lot of sarcasm. Todd, a regular here at fox said ive seen worse snowstorms president in a snow blow. Somebody else said even the weather things the patriots did it. And another one, more like blasard. There was one tragedy the back street boys were unable to travel to new york city so they are looking on an alternative. I hope they fly their fans out to wherever they are next. Maybe l. A. . The conversation has been you know you shut the subways down. We can save our own butts. No,underrers complain new yorkers complain. Were good at it. The National Weather service is evaluating their mistake. A lot of talk today about whether officials near the city of new york overreacted in the face of a forecast that turned out to be in error. In fact the meteorologists in charge at the National Weather Service Regional office went so far as to take the twitter to apologize for getting it wrong. He tweeted out quote, my deepest apologies to many key decisionmakes and so many member 0 the general public you. Made a lot of tough decisions expecting to us get it right and we didnt. Once again im sorry. For the first time the city shut done the entire subway system because of snow. All the rail systems in and out of the city were shut down as well. A lot of businesses had to close today because their employees could not get into work. The mayor defended the actions that officials took saying back in 2010, the city was totally unpresent for a huge snowstorm that hit back then. Would you rather be ahead of the action or behind . Would you rather be prepared or unprepared . Rather be safe or unsafe . My job as leader is to make decisions, and i will always err on the side of safety and caution. A lot of poem complaining today about the Economic Impact of virtually shutting down the entire city for almost an entire day, but mayor de blasio said had the weather system not shifted to the east we could have had the same snow here in dont new york city they had on the eastern end of long island and he said that would have been an Economic Disaster for new york if every was up and running. I watched his News Conference and he was like, look given the information i had id do it exactly the same next time. He was unapologetic saying, obviously, theres going to be a review that take place in the aftermath of this, a little afteraction report to apply lessons the future help said he is going to treat weather threats conservatively and will be forceful in communicating his concerns to the people of new york and at the region. John roberts, thank you. New england got exactly what was predicted and still going. Still notion across the region. Look at this. Thats a town along the coast in massachusetts, 30 miles southeast of boston and, again, the storm isnt over. They have serious serious coastal flooding problems there. Were about less than an hour away from another high tide and this is supposed to be bad. Peter jung is on the line with us. How is this high tide looking . We are really concerned shep. It was pretty big this morning in the a. M. Hours, this afternoon, as predicted to be a little more forceful. So were prepared for potentially major impacts of this high tide. A lot of people trapped . No. Really, that wasnt the case. A lot of people theyve been down this road before. They know which place is susceptible to flooding. A lot of people selfevacuated. A handful of folks this morning changed their minds and local officials had to save them. But they werent in harms way. They just made a decision that their car was not going to be able to drive in that deep water. You must be having an ice problem you. Dont get above 32 for as long as the forecast goes. No. Matter of fact, the temperatures are supposed to dip really into Single Digits over the next couple of days. I notice the Power Outages werent as bad and im guessing thats because it was colder and the snow was lighter and fluffier instead of heavy and wet. One in the few times we were happy to have cold temperatures. No heavy snow and no outages. High number was 36,000, and that number is going down. How are the roads looking . Can people get around . Theres still a travel ban for the eastern twothirds of the state. Western twothirds western third, things have improved and that opened up. The governor will make decisions 5 00 tonight whether to lift it in other areas of the state. Still a lot of snow coming down. Peter judge on the line with us from the massachusetts management agency. Good job well done, appreciate it. Thank you much, shep, be safe. The boston mayor is holding the News Conference and has just begun. Lets listen. Until 1 00 a. M. Coastal flooding warnings will remain in effect until 8 00 p. M. Tonight. The states ordered travel ban remains in effect in the city of boston. In the city of boston emergency remains in effect as does the parking ban until tomorrow when we decide when its safe to be able to travel in the city of boston. Tomorrow, city hall will be closed for anyone except for Emergency Personnel. In part of that reason is to keep the roads clear as we continue to battle the storm. In other words, still very much in the middle of the storm here in the city of boston, and safe concerns remain a very serious concern of all of ours. Its not easy to stay ahead of a storm this size, but we have been able to use all the city resoursresources to do the best we can. Our Emergency Operations Center Remains open and will continue to too so through the recovery. We still have out in at the street right now 700 laws and 700 plows. Were using snow farms and i ask all the residents of boston to be parent with us as we get out there. We were ahead of the storm pretty well and then around 11 00 when the storm picked up our roads got hammered again particularly the side roads. So were asking you to be patient and well get to your roads. The next stage were working on is snow removal. Were working in our Priority Areas inaround schools, and holding open the possibility of closing schools on thursday, depending on progress through the night tonight and tomorrow. As of 3 00 today the mayors hotline has received 1328 phone calls. Weve got 100 answering of the phone calls with under 30 second average, making sure that people get a chance to call in. For anyone seeing nip please call 911 so we can get them because the storm is still going on and its not over. Some of the Emergency Services are also remaining very active but with everyones cooperation to meet this challenge, its note the time for anyone to relax or be complacent and were not doing that here in the city of boston. People should not drive, and if theyre not Emergency Personnel or have emergency circumstance so im asking you not to drive your car. Some streets are unplowed. I saw myself going through city today, people being trapped in the street because their car couldnt pass. People should be careful and should not be walking on the streets unless for emergency reasons. We have had reports from snow plow drivers that have had close call with pedestrians walking in the street. People wearing hats and head phones and not paying attention to the circumstances around you. You need to Pay Attention when youre on at the streets. We have seen a lot of people walking on main artery0s are ski only main arteries. Plows cant stop. Im also asking people not to shovel snow into the street. We have had circumstances where we have had plow goes down streets and then we have had people shoveling the snow into the street. Its difficult. Not maybe places to shovel the snow but im asking you not to put snow back on the street because that will cause a problem for us, Public Safety problem and issue trying to get plows around the city of boston. The boston mayor with updates for people across new england. Still some very difficult times ahead. The snow is scheduled to continue into the nighttime hours, 0 to the not real late. Two places of major concern, sit situate a lot of floating floating and evacuations. The other area of concern is nantucket. 12,000 yearround residents on the island. No power, no phone service. It is cut off from the rest of the world, and frankly dont have any information, and that lack of knowledge is quieting and disturbing. So hopefully everything is okay on nantucket but at this moment no way to know. Historic storm . Without any question for boston and the number area, absolutely one for and the new england area, one for the hoyt books. How difficult a prosecution would this be . Well, i think that props in way this has been handled from the beginning. They didnt do the whole premature, charge with murder and get publicity. They waited to get positive identification of the victims. They have probably had a long interrogation of this gentleman. I would not be surprised if he has either made a confession or made such inconsistent statements that when they compare them to the known facts and that is there was telephonic communication between him and the purchasers, they knew he was lying, and if they knew he was lying, and the car was found on a pond near his property with their identified bodies, two plus two is obviously going to be four in this instance.
