Was president who happens to be his son, then i think theyre going to find an interesting book. Your dad never wrote a personal memoir. Right. Was this for him for that reason . Did you want to do it because you felt you wanted to well, theres a lot of reasons i wrote it. But yeah. I mean, i want people to first of all, he hadnt gotten a lot of attention. One reason is because he didnt write his own book. Hes a modest, humble man. Hes not a chest thumper. And therefore a lot of people havent analyzed his presidency. But theyre going to start. And i wanted to be a part of the initial wave. Youre in a special club. John quincy adams never wrote about his dad. Q and w. There you go. And that was part of your motivation. It was. David mcculloughs daughter told me her dad has always wished he had read a book by john q about his father. I said sounds like a good idea. So started a couple years ago. You talk in the book only two times in American History have both parents been there for their sons inauguration. Correct. And only one time have both parents been there when they finished the presidency. Exactly. John kennedys mother and dad were alive when he was swornin. Yeah. Basically its a loud shout out to how blessed i am. To be able to have your parents alive during the presidency. And of course have them to thrive after the presidency. After all this is a guy who jumped out of a helicopter on his 90th birthday. I saw the video. Unbelievable. You voted yes on that. Your mother was a little suspicious, some of the doctors didnt think it was a good idea. He said what do you think, i said jump. After all it had to have made him feel very young. Yeah. You had a tough go of it. You tell a story in the book, and i think it kind of describes how close the bush family is, back in november 2012. Your dad had a bad cough. Went in the hospital. Yeah. December he had pneumonia. So you, laura, the girls, your daughter jenna is expecting. Right. Going to the hospital, go to see your dad. Right. You write in the book, no crying. Yeah. I said i dont want the last image of us to be as weeping around him. His last image. Get over there its an icu unit at methodist hospital. Trying to comfort and he leans over and rubs jennas stomach and said theres death and then theres the beauty of life. And we all wept. I gave him a kiss. I thought it would be the last time id see him. I underestimated him. As well as misunderestimated him. Thank you for remembering some of my great we all have them. Dont worry. Ive been in the business for a long time. You tell the story in the book about you hold dad, shout out in the sky. This is interesting to me, he signed up for the navy on his 18th birthday signed up for the military on his 18th birthday. My father did the same thing, right from world war ii. It was that generation. He goes to war a fighter pilot, we have the video he was rescued, shot down. Two other men lost their lives. You tell a story he never forgot them. Correct. And thinks about them all the time. Thats true. What does that tell about him . Well, it tells hes a loyal man whos got a huge heart. And he rarely talked about his experience. Im sure your dad didnt either. Never. These are men who grew up very quickly and who, you know, if youd said youre a hero to your dad or my dad, a lot say i was just doing my duty. Sense of duty was powerful. It was an extraordinary experience for an 18yearold kid. It had to have been. And i think it speaks to a lot of the decisions he made in his life such as foregoing wall street to go to odessa, texas. Risk taker. Absolutely. And the truth of the matter is my brothers and sister and i benefitted from his example. Interesting anecdotes you use in the book. You were a pain in your dads neck a little bit. Yeah. You stole toy soldiers. Yes. Out of a store. And how did your father handle that . He handled it theres a line you dont cross, but he handled it with grace. Yeah, he saw me playing with some soldiers. I was 5 or 6 years old. He said whered you get those . Of course i balked. I didnt have a very good answer. It wasnt well scripted. The next thing i know im marching into the store, apologizing to the store owner and returning these pathetic little toy soldiers. And that was it. There was no yelling, screaming. Lesson taught. Yeah, lesson taught. And then you urinated in the hedges. Yes, i did that as well. And then you had a little too much to drink after a tennis match and knocked over a garbage you were a troublemaker. Well, i was, you know, testing his patience. Theres a line you use about his parenting. Yeah. And that is i love you. Nothing you can do to make me not love you. Stop trying. That one . Yeah, that one. Yeah, its the one i used on our girls a lot. Its not one of my favorite pieces of advice for parents. It basically says, look, just love your children. And if you love them, theres a good chance, better than even chance but in the case where you came home and youd been with one of your dads friends and you knocked over the garbage can. Yeah. He didnt yell at you. He didnt say a word to you. Thats right. So when you admire somebody he had earned my admiration over the years by being such a great father. And, yeah, i came in drunk. Mother gave me a scolding. And then said you need to go see your father. I defiantly charge in the room and hes reading a book and he kind of lowers the book and takes off his glasses and stares at me. Glasses back on. Book up. I mean, it was such a childish behavior didnt deserve a word of his. On the other hand his actions sent a clear message. And as i put in the book, i slunk out of the room. I felt terrible because i had i did make an ass out of myself. Its very interesting because you kind of compare and contrast parenting today. And i you know, i think the word helicopter parent would probably accurately describe me. Thats very different the way you describe your dad just the fact he wouldnt talk to you was enough to change your behavior. Had a big impact on you. Well, but you have to earn that respect to begin with. In other words, it wasnt just happenstance, it was that over the years, you know, he earned all our respect. Look, i wasnt around a lot of the time when my brothers were growing up. Im seven years older than jeb for starters. But im confident he handled them the same way he handled me, which was, you disappointed me. You said he didnt hug you. Never said he loved you. Didnt need to. Yeah. Well initially. Toward the end of his life of course hes always saying i love you. If he really wants to get you, he says i love you more than time can tell. Which are some of the last words you heard from robin before she died. You talk about that in your book no crying in front of robin. When you wrote that said that to you because she was 3 years old, had leukemia, kept going back and forth to new york, your mom and dad. Yeah. When i heard he said that and then no crying in front of dad, i saw a similarity. Well, were all from the same gene pool. That had to have been a very tough period for them. Their marriage became stronger because theyre two extraordinary people. And as i put in the book, they both went threequarters of the way. I asked mother one time, i said hows your marriage . Ive never seen mother and dad fight. Ever. Yell, scream, holler. They needle each other in a friendly and loving way, at times. But never a harsh word. And so i said howd this marriage happen . And she said we both went threequarters of the way. Good answer. Interesting answer. Willing to put self aside. At the george bush president ial library, when we come back more with p. George w. Bush, well talk about his brother jeb, isis, other news of the day and of course the great influence of his father. Dad had always been reticent to talk about himself. He struck just the right tone. I may not be the most eloquent, but i learned that early on eloquence wont draw oil from the ground. And i may sometimes be a little awkward, but theres nothing selfconscious in my love of country. Im a quiet man. But i hear the quiet people others dont, the ones who raise the family, pay the taxes, meet the mortgage. And i hear them, and i am moved. And their concerns are mine. He built to i will keep america moving forward. Keep america moving forward, always forward, for a better america. For an endless enduring dream and a thousand points of light. This is my mission and i will complete it. The crowd exploded. Poured on to the stage with the rest of our family join mother and dad for the balloon drop. I cant remember another speech so perfect for the moment. Dad had moved seamlessly to a candidate in his own right. Like many others who cared deeply for george bush, i was exuberant that night. Past my prime . Im a victim of a slowing metabolism . I dont think so. Great grains protein blend. Protein from Natural Ingredients like seeds and nuts. It helps support a healthy metabolism. [ gunfire ] dad first heard about the shooting shortly after air force two lifted off from ft. Worth. Dad took a moment to process what hed learned. Gathered on one of the flight cards. He thought first about the president as his friend. Then he turned to his responsibility. He scribbled a reminder. He wrote the word uncertainty, which he knew the country would be feeling. He knew how important it would be to present stability. I can reassure this nation and a watching world that the American Government is functioning fully and effectively. And we continue at the george bush president ial library. As you can see behind me that is a big piece of the berlin wall. We continue with george w. Bush talking about his brand new book 41, a portrait of my father. I was shocked to learn that your dad tried to set you up on a date with trisha nixon. Yes, i was a little shocked. I know. I was shocked he called me and asked me. So im at Moody Air Force base in georgia. And said youre not going to believe this, dad said he wants me to go have a date with trisha nixon. I was a little reluctant to do it at first. A lot of my pilot buddies heard about it and started needling me. Youre making it up. I said im going. Just to prove them wrong. And i go. And i went upstairs, trisha was very polite and very lovely. I was a little bit of a swash buck buckler. I spilled the red wine on the oak table, fired up a lucky strike. Anyway, didnt work out well. Looking at your dad, the one thing that struck me as you read the book in total is all of the things he did. Yeah. He ran for congress, lost congress, became a congressman, then was urged to run for senate. U. N. Ambassador at the time Richard Nixon appointed him. Head of the rnc when Richard Nixon had to resign. He wrote him a really fascinating letter the day before he resigned on august 7th, he resigned on august 8th. Correct. Saying for the good of the country and the presidency. Yeah. He was there for watergate. He was there for almost every big moment in the last two generations of history. Yeah, he was. You know, prepared him to be president. Yeah. I tell people george bush was the best oneterm president weve ever had. Nobody knows it. This book is a way to start letting people know that. We often hear the story the day president reagan was shot by hinkley. Your dad approached differently. He said no. The next Cabinet Meeting the next day he would not sit in the president s seat. Right. Even though he was sort of filling in. What does that tell you about him . That hes got good perspective. I mean he knew his job. And he wasnt going to try to change it. That hes a humble man. Didnt need people thinking he was something he wasnt. Im confident those decisions you mentioned were never in doubt. Theres no question in my mind he wasnt going to ever think about landing it. And they became best of friends. Yes. A very close friendship. Im not surprised. Theyre both funny men. They both love the country. You know, it wasnt necessarily deemed, you know, that that was going to be the case. But dad worked hard as did president reagan. President reagan an easy guy to like. It was funny because you would think when your dads president i would have thought that you would have sought out his council and his advice. Yeah. You tell a story in the book where you say that, well, if i would have asked him a policy question, he would have asked to be briefed on something so he can give a strong opinion. But when he offered you something very different because he knew the pressures of the office. He offered me love and humor. He would call me and say, son, you did a great job. Wonderful speech. And it was so uplifting to hear somebody you admire and love say that to you. He would interject humor. In other words, he would send an email to andy or josh and read this is from your dad. And all of a sudden theyd read some funny story or Something Like that. Theres a lot of psycho babble about my relationship with dad. This book helps people understand it better. But also people have real trouble understanding that i wasnt on the phone constantly seeking, you know, advice, what do you do . One reason why is because he had made president ial decisions. And he knows how important it is to be fully briefed by people who have been studied the issue. Yeah. So hed have said, hey, send your briefers down. One thing i gleaned, you thought that your father decided to leave a safe congressional seat to run for senate. And you said maybe because his dad had been senator. Could have been. Well, then that would lead the question, did you run for president theres no question he paved the way for jeb and me by showing us that you can go into politics and not sacrifice that which is important. Being a good husband or fatherhood. Its hard to tell. You know, the tug and pull. Look, the first threshold question for my run for the presidency is why do you run against anne richards. She wasnt on board. Seems to be repeating herself these days. When we come back we continue from the george bush president ial library on the campus of a m university. When we come back well talk to george w. Bush about isis, jeb bush maybe running for president and much more on this special edition of hannity. Huh, fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. Everybody knows that. Well, did you know genies can be really literal . No. What is your wish . No. Ok. A million bucks oh no. Geico. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. Its a bigger, better reason to celebrate. So hurry in and sea food differently. Ben well, that was close you aint lying let quicken loans help you save your money. And we continue on the campus of a m university at the george bush president ial library. More with president george w. Bush about his father. His book is called 41, a portrait of my father. You said something that was really interesting to me. The reality of every twoterm president is towards the end americans grow weary of a president. Yeah. Do you feel people grew weary of you . And heres president obama in the final two years of his or Ronald Reagan when they lost eight seats in the senate in 86. I think sure they were. Doesnt mean they dislike you. Growing weary is different from, you know, approval or disapproval. But its almost as if people say surely we can do better than this guy. Does that have a psychological impact . Not really actually. As far as i was concerned, you know, i was dealing in those two yearsith how to win in iraq and the financial meltdown. And those decisions i made had nothing to do with whether people were, you know, kind of looking forward to the next guy. What are the things i liked about the way you wrote the book is you talked about your dads presidency, decisions he made and also explained in similar circumstances. One of them obviously had to do with iraq. And you sent him a letter, you gave launch Operation Iraqi freedom. You said i know im taking the right action and do pray we will lose we wont lose life, few will lose life. You said iraq will be free, the world will be safer. Emotion of the moment is pass. Now i await word on the covert action thats taking place. And i know what you went through. Then he wrote you back, your handwritten note, just received, touched my heart. Youre doing the right thing. Remember robins words. I love you more than time can tell. Thankfully you read that letter. If id try to read it did you dismantle my book . I do that a lot. That will double sales. See, i just bought two. This is typical of george bush. I mean, its a sweet letter that evokes emotion. I mean, hes encourages emotion. Hes a great letter writer. It took time to write it. It meant a lot to me. Those are the toughest decisions of a presidency. No question. And if youre in, you got to go all in to win. 4,000 americans lost their lives in iraq. And you talked about, i think, 23 lost their lives in the kuwait conflict that your dad had pursued. Every one of those cities that we watched being conquered, ramala, fallujah, tikrit, sinjar mountains, mosul, in a a short period of time have now been taken over by isis. You talk about isis a little bit in the book. Yeah. As you watch that and think about those 4,000 americans, what does that mean to you . It means that it means we better achieve the goal of degrade and defeat isis, which is the president s stated goal. Can you do that with 1,500 troops . Well, thats what were about to find out. Its going to be the key thing is that we achieve the goal and adjust the strategy to meet the goal. Mean the surge . Yeah. So if the surge worked in those cities and conquered and the war was won and then those cities end up in the hands of isis. If im one of the parents of the 4,000 that lost their son, what am i thinking of those cities they fought for . First of all think of how particularly proud they are on veterans day. I hope when they read my books realize that the decisions i made was aimed to keep america safe in a post9 11 environment. I hope they realize the decisions i made were aimed at securing a victory so any sacrifice would not be in vain. I think most people realize that this is a long struggle. My post9 11 comments were just that, its going to be a long struggle. Comments in 2007 though and you said very clearly theyve now been played a lot, if we are not wise, and if we leave too early. Yeah. We will be facing a worse enemy. You turned out to be 100 accurate. Sadly. You wish you were wrong. I do wish i was wrong. Coming up, when we come back well walk through the president ial library with both bush president 41 and 43 as this special edition of hannity continues. Three days after the september 11th attacks, laura and i attended a Church Service at the national cathedral. Former president s, clinton, carter and ford were there along with Supreme Court justices and members of congress and laura and my parents. Our responsibility to history is already clear. To answer these attacks and rid the world of evil. Delivering this speech without breaking down was challenging. Many people in the cathedral has tears streaming down their cheeks including some military personnel. My strategy was not to look at laura or my parents because i knew they would push me over the edge. Fortunately, i made my speech and returned to my pugh. Just after i sat down dad reached over laura and gently squeezed my arm. His simple loving gesture brought my comfort. Helps you be Ready Anytime the moment is right. No. Even more impressive was the play made at first base. A great picture. Every person that ive ever talked to you on the boat says you drive a hundred miles an hour. Is that true . Not quite. You still like to drive it . Oh, yeah. As we continue at the george bush president ial library, more of my interview with george bush 43 on his book 41, a portrait or my father. Let me ask you about your brother jeb. Ive heard of him. You tell a lot of the stories about you actually talk about the night you became governor of texas. Yeah. That your parents were obviously very happy, but your father was more concerned about your brother. Well, typical george h. W. Bush. He cares deeply for people who hurt. One reason he was a great diplomat for example is because he could think about the other person. And so jeb had lost. Theyre in florida. And i called over there to let them know i was going to give a victory statement. And he was exuberant i won. He was like good going, son. But it was clear that he was worried about jeb. Which thats why we all love him so much. If he were trying to make something out of that my attitude is, wow, what a father. That goes back to the love story. So theres only been two sons of president s that went on to the presidency. You made history. Correct. Theres never been a case where Second Brother has become president. Thats true. You said the other day you think its a 50 50 chance. Correct. Youre always outspoken mom, you were joking about earlier in the speech you were giving i was watching saying maybe weve had enough of the bushes. Correct. You do not agree. I do not agree. You know, one way to look at it someone said in a speech the other day, you know, jeb nobody likes a Political Class in america. I mean, were a nation thats more e gal train than that. So clinton, bush, obama, bush, sticks in peoples craws. Obviously mothers. And then of course you get a look at it in context of reality. How about bush, clinton, bush, obama, clinton. In other words society isnt perfect. Thats not a reason for jeb to run or not to run. Jeb knows what its like. Hes watched it up close. Twice. And you talk about being on the campaign trail with your dad. Yeah. And the hard times, the good times, the reelection. 19 2 was really hard for you. Very hard. For all of us. Then you describe how you appointed former president clinton and your dad and they became the best of friends. Yeah, they became good friends. Which speaks volumes about both. What does that mean about a potential Jeb Bush Hillary clinton showdown . It means that bill and i are going to have to have some interesting things to talk about. Youre not going out on the campaign ill still like him when jeb beats henry. Are you betting on that . If jeb runs, look, i dont know if hes going to run. I really dont. I hope he does because hed be a great president. But, you know, hes weighing out the hes weighing it out. Hes going to take a very deliberate decision. The idea of being a second, you know, one of two brothers and being president is not going to weigh in his decision. Its not important to him. Whats important to him is, you know, as he said publicly, hes going to make sure this is okay with his family. Yeah. You talk about an after life, life after the presidency. You use the analogy you go from 100 miles an hour to 5 miles an hour. You talk about that being really, really hard. You said it was even hard for you. Yeah. I wouldnt say really, really hard. I would say its an interesting adjustment. And theres a certain level of kind of a decembspondency that in when youre not going a hundred miles an hour. Its an abrupt change in your life. Thats why writing a book was important to me. Laura and i working on our library there at smu is important to me. You stay busy. I do. Yeah, i got to stay busy. I saw you with the students here at the college today. You seem to enjoy the give and take. I do. I like it. I mean, as i tell people, you know, when i go give a speech i just say, look, my area of expertise whats it like to be president. Why did you make the decision . I could sit here all day and get you to comment on president obama, and im not going to get anywhere. Correct. Because i know you very well. Yes, you do. Why did you make that decision . Because im sure you have a lot to say. Weve talked politics before we came in here. Youre very engaged in whats going on. Im very aware whats going on. I dont think its good for the country to have a former president undermine a current president. I think its bad for the presidency for that matter. Secondly, i really have had all the fame i want. Now im trying to be famous on your show in order to sell this great and mighty book. But i really dont long for publicity. And the truth of the matter is in order for me to generate publicity apart from this id have to either attack the republican party, which i dont want to do, or attack the president , which i dont want to do. So im perfectly content to be out of the limelight. When you brought in the final days of your presidency you brought all the former president s in. Yes. And you said president obama was very deferential to your dad. Correct. Seemed to have great admiration for your dad. Has he i know he called you about bin laden. Does he call you at any other points . Never. Does he ever reach out to your dad . I dont know. I know this however, president obamas very unpopular in texas. He comes to texas and dads there at the foot of the stairs to meet him in his wheelchair. Typical 41. You wouldnt do it. Well, i dont know. Thats a good question. Hadnt yet so far. Thank you for bringing that up by the way. Im asking if you would. I know, but you didnt ever mention it. When you think back throughout the history throughout your presidency and obviously pt the post9 11 think of what your dad went through, the fall of berlin wall. I think he went through, what, four soviet leaders at the time . Correct. Which is amazing. All the other history well, he went through four as Vice President and president. Vice president and president. Right. And you had a great relationship. He got criticized for not wanting to be, you know, stick it to gorbachev when asked to go to the berlin wall he said no. Yeah, he did. It was because he understood that in Public Service its not important to talk about yourself and to promote yourself. Its important to achieve results. And he knew that if he incited hardliners inside the old soviet, gorbachev would be it would make it much harder for gorbachev to make the decisions for the young democracies to peel off and for the wall to come down. Last question. What is the one thing i read the book covertocover, what do you want people to take away from this love story that you have for your dad who became a leader at a moment in history that i dont know if we could ever duplicate in terms of things that happened . I want them to know that the nation was very fortunate to have a man of george bushs character as their leader. I want them to know that those of us who know him are very fortunate to call him dad and friend. You, my friend are a master of diversification. Do you miss being there . No, not at all. Not really. You know, eight years is plenty. I enjoyed it. I love the action and the team around me. I miss a lot of people i served with. But, you know, im still in touch with condi and hadly and josh and andy and dana. And karl. Karl, absolutely. I see Margaret Spellings is running our deal there in dallas, bush library or bush institute. I stay in touch, but i really dont miss the daytoday. Its just, you know, its one of these things where i gave it my all. And thats all you can do. And you have a sense that historys going to judge everybody fairly. Yeah, i do. Its hard to tell it right now. Sure. Because, you know, its impossible for a historian who lived through a persons period persons presidency for example to be objective. Historians can have prejudices about the decisions made for or against. It will be hard to record accurately record that. Plus there needs to be time for the decision to show its worth or not. How surreal is it youre the son of the president , youve been in the oval office, first time in the white house youre there to meet trisha, next thing then you get that office and your dads in there with you. Yeah, its awesome. Its a great moment, right . Well, such a touching moment. Im not that i can just tell you it was serene, and very sweet. Its hard to understand when you talk about not, your dad didnt want to give you advice every day. He might give you an opinion on someone you might hire. Other support is only something somebody in that job could offer. Exactly. That is one of the things that makes this book unique. Is that you have a father comforting a son, but what makes it more profound is that he had been president himself so he knows what youre going through. I knew what he was going through, too, however. He would agonize over what people said about me and the criticism. I would call him and say look. Im doing fine. Dont worry about me. Didnt bother you . You didnt read a lot of it . You know what bothered me is the harsh rhetoric. Its gotten harsher. I dont want people to be turned off to our system. Its the fairest system by far. The idea of saying why would i want to be involved in that troubles me. The age of the internet, blogs, commentary . Its harsher than its been. Hopefully, good people will run this. Hopefully this book sends a message you can be a good person, good values and dont have to sacrifice those. How do you explain. You talked about your dads loss and talked about conditions that werent working in his favor and cat wineberger had gotten elected and we have a big mid term like weve had. Its a repudiation of obama. How do you explain . The country moving back and forth . Its good. Why . Because it means change is possible. I didnt think 2006 was all that great. But never theless it was an indication democracy was functioning. People are pretty wise. Not pretty wise, wise. And if you take them for granted or dont, you know dont listen to the kind of rumblings, you get, you know, they let you know their feelings in the polls youre thinking about that. You have a different ideology. President reagan so different than jimmy carter. Yes. Okay. Bill clinton so different from your dad. Obama, very different from you. Yes. Now, the country seems to be swinging back. Do you think its good . Yes. People get to say, get to have a say in their government. And standing in contrast to parts of the world where people dont have a say in their government which is rad, promoting radicalism, enabling thugs to recruit. You know . That is the biggest threat we face in your view . Yes, sir. Bigger than you know . Its hard to tell how big it is because you dont know. Certainly, you know people say al qaeda was a threat. You dont know how big a threat. And you know so my worry after september 11th was chemical, biological or dirty bomb in the hands of these people. These people are more vicious than al qaeda . You see the beheadings well, al qaeda slit danny pearls throat. Its true. Its hard to argue about the level of evil, but evil is what it is. The point is that theyll kill again. Weve got to succeed. When we come back, only two president s have witnessed their own sons go on to be president s themselves. Final reflections from the Bush National museum as this special edition of hannity continues.
