I felt like it was optimistic trump as opposed to someone who feels like they had their back against the wall. Rachel proud of himself. Listen, did i a good job this year. Thats the sentiment i got. Pete what are your predictions for 2019. This is what President Trump had to say yesterday. Well, i think were going to have a great form of wealth. We have created a lot of wealth for our country. And thats very important because that means jobs. That means prosperity. I really think we are going to have tremendous success with trade deals. I think we are going to have a tremendously rebuilt military for strength. Pete do you have any resolutions for 2019, sir . Any resolutions . Just success and prosperity and health for our country. Thats all i want. Dean you got no resolutions. Rachel he is a goal guy like you. Dean i like that. Thank you, mr. President. Pete he wasnt pinning anybody down in particular. He has a lot of big fights. The partial Government Shutdown still ongoing. Unclear where that will go. Nancy pelosi will likely become speaker here on january 3rd, a couple days away. Until then nothing is really moving. We did get a glimpse yesterday. We got a statement from chuck and nannies in response to the president. This is where they say they are in negotiations. They say while President Trump drags the nation into week two of what they call the trump shutdown, democrats are taking action to lead our country out of this mess. And that action includes, apparently still no money for the wall. Dean what action are they taking . What are they doing . Rachel nothing. Dean we get our way or nothing happens. Rachel listen, what they are going to do they have six year long spending bills. But the spending bills have nothing in it for the border wall. Thats the debate. The question then becomes with mitch mcconnell. Mitch mcconnell has said, listen, im not going to put forward any bill that the president is going to veto. If the president says im not going to sign anything without Border Security and funding for the wall in it, were going to be in this family for a while. Dean impasse. Pete i dont know where it ends. Democrats will say we are ready to end this shutdown we have spending bills ready to pass. Thats fine. This is not the trump shutdown or schumer shutdown. Its the border shutdown. If thats what its about Border Security. Somebody has to move. You can propose all the bills you want without wall funding. It doesnt mean its going to go anywhere. Rachel when you poll americans and ask them what do they think about the wall in the numbers arent that great. 56 say they dont like that idea. If you say Border Security, the number goes. Higher. So you know, i have been noticing that he and his spokes people keep saying Border Security, the slats, the wall, the bottom line is this the Border Patrol, the president met with the Border Patrol and the Border Patrol said this is what we need as part of Border Security we need a wall. Listen to the president right now talking about that. Fox news alert. If you dont have borders we dont have country. We dont want drug traffickers or human traffickers or illegal people with criminal records to come in. Our Border Patrol, our ice agents, our military, we have done great. You can never do it perfectly unless you have a wall. We have to have a wall as part of Border Security. Pete you know, i agree, obviously a lot of people who support the president do. Rachel every new year comes new laws. Last night hundreds of state and local measures which passed in 2018 went into effect. Deep dean joining us now to break down a few laws that stand out. Taxpayers union and center for a free economy maddy. What are we expecting in 2019 . Whats going on . Good morning, you guys. And happy new year. As you mentioned with a new year comes a lot of new laws on the books. 19 states have passed a new mandatory minimum wage which, of course, in a booming economy, you can understand how lawmakers want to make sure that workers arent left behind. But, of course, the problem with minimum wage and its proponents its never the Silver Bullet that most of proponents think it is. Rather than making labor arbitrarily more expensive. States should be adopting laws to remove barriers to employment. Employers say one of the Biggest Challenges they face is finding qualified workforce to fill open jobs. We have 7 million jobs open in this country right now. Thats a lot of work to be done. By making labor more expensive, you will see at love states try to phase out those jobs perhaps go to auto mailings because workers become too expensive. I would like to see how those states adjust as those minimum wage laws get phased in. A couple other laws. Rachel continue, go ahead. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A couple other laws interesting and play out. California always has interesting ideas. Dean there we go california, my state home state. Beautiful state but Public Policy could use a little bit work sometimes. They mandated every publicly held Company Needs to have a woman on its board by the end of 2019. There is no question that we need more women in corporate leadership. But this is, to me, demonstrates the lack of imagination on the left. What we need is support ecosystem that allows women executives to succeed. Mandating that a woman needs to be on a board is not the way to go about that. I think its really going to create disruption in some of these companies where have you leadership that in some cases have been there for years, has that Institutional Knowledge that is so important for some of these companies. And now its not to say that women arent in executive positions but data shows a lot of women are brought in after downturn in an economy to fix problems that have happened in publicly held companies. I would like to see more women to grow organically to scale businesses than to argue they need to start right at the top. Rachel where does that end other groups of people that can be added. Dean add this person here. Rachel tell us whats going on in illinois with goldible parachutes. Its not all bad. I should say that right away. I want to be optimistic in new year. Illinois they have made it more difficult for Public Employees to get severance after being fired for a fireable offense. You know, this is common sense here. Illinois especially where the liability for Public Employees have been out of control. They are trying to create transparency in public employment. But also save taxpayer dollars. Making sure that Public Employees cant continue to drink at the taxpayer trough after they have been fired from malfeasance. Dean mattie, i have a family of hunters in my family. They do wear their orange hunting clothes. What is changing in 2019 . This is another good example of where illinois finally got something right. Im from wisconsin. A lot of hunting going on there. It almost kind of reminds me, its almost likes a if you, pete, this is the person you interviewed last night in times square. Rachel charlie, there was pressure on her to do. This because one of the things that alexandria ocasiocortez has done very effectively is do these. She was making mac and cheese shortly after her election. And she was live instagraming this. And it was very effective. Also beto orourke he was making slime with his kids and that went viral as well. She is trying to figure out how do i do this . And it just didnt work at all. You know, some people they may not know anything that they are talking about. At least they are very natural at this sort of stuff. The problem with somebody like Elizabeth Warren and lets be clear about this, you know, her campaign her entire political career has been sort of based on this sort of class warfare which does not do well in american politics. When you look back at, say, john kerry and john edwards, their campaign was a disaster because it was all this class warfare nonsense. You look back at 2008 with somebody like president obama, he ran a very Unifying Campaign in 2008. All bets were off when he ran for reelection. But, these class warfare things dont do very well under any circumstances. They particularly arent going to do well in a time like right now where you have the first uptick in wages in nearly a decade. Pete yeah. You have the lowest unemployment in history. And you have a guy in donald trump who, you can say what you want to about the guy, but, man, he really does have a pulse of the people and he is somebody who is not afraid to stand up for those people. And he will make any, you know, he will fight any fight he needs to fight on their behalf. Pete and be who he is. This guy flew to the iowa state fair in his own chopper in a suit. This is ohio am elect me or not. Exactly. Pete i had a chance to ask the president yesterday about Elizabeth Warren as his first perspective opponent. This is what he said. Im happy about it. I think its wonderful. I hope she gets the nomination that would be a wonderful thing for me. Pete do you really think she believes she can win. Well, that, i dont know. You would have to ask her psychiatrist. But, honestly, i just, you know, if its her or somebody else, when you look at what we have done, i dont think, if you go just based on the record, i dont see how anybody wins. Pete ask her psychiatrist. We got a request in psychiatrist, no answer yet. That authenticity donald trump spits this stuff out 10 times a minute. Its all very natural and obviously very offensive to some people. People get all upset about it its very natural. You compare that authenticity to im going to go get a beer. Its the juxtaposition is only to trumps advantage. Dean grab me a beer. Charles, real quick, what will your top political predictions for 2019. First one will be the Government Shutdown will end and donald trump will claim credit for it another prediction will be that donald trump will come up with new nicknames. Might come up with new nicknames for Elizabeth Warren and those people will not like that. But probably the most important prediction is Chuck Schumer is going to be driven up the wall by Elizabeth Warren and all the other democrats in the senate. Running for president , jockeying to stakeout territory as far as left as they can go. Basically mean that democrats are not going to be able to get anything done. Nothing is going to happen in the next year out of washington. And but voters will be reminded of what it is like to have nancy pelosi at this ate top of the house assuming she can get the votes she needs to be speaker. And i think two years of being reminded of who nancy pelosi is will probably be a very good thing for republicans and donald trump running for reelection. Rachel you are predicting a win in the election cycle for the congress. I do. And i think things are going very favorably for trump. Despite what you hear out of washington. I think some things he does are great. I love the tax cut. I think some things he does are not great. I do not like the tariffs. So, its made me less partisan because i dont feel like i have to defend my party or my team because is he kind of his own thing. Is he something totally different that it challenges the way we behaved previously. Pete if your party was your compass or your team before. Right. Pete what are you learning from trump based on what his compass. I think its to really check what matter to you personally. One thing i say in my column i used to follow the Republican Partys lead on different issues. When an issue mattered to them, it mattered to me and then when it didnt matter to them anymore it didnt matter to me. Enough to i think im much more grounded in what matters to me personally. Pete there is this idea of america first. Not just parties. If you are putting the Country First or workers first, you might come at issue like immigration or trade which you say you differ on tariffs. If your belief we are getting screwed in trade deals maybe you use tariffs as a vehicle for a balanced playing field. I would argue you dont yes. Absolutely. Definitely outlines of the mainstream position. Pete do you think the Republican Party is forever changed. Folks that support trump see his view us more in him or the Republican Party . I do think they see it more aligned with him maybe he is reshaping what the party will represent going forward. For the time being he is donald trump and the party is Something Else entirely. Pete what is the Democrat Party today then . Interesting. I see them as very reactive to him. I have written a lot they dont have any idea ideas. They cant verbalize their own ideas say on immigration. Are they for open borders . They can never ever say that they sort of just imply it or behave in a way that would lead you to believe they are for open borders. If you are for open borders, you lose. They are in a tough position where they are just like we are not donald trump. We oppose what he stands for. But we will never verbalize what we stand for ourselves. Pete i dont want to put words in your mouth. You dont strike me as someone who is protrump from the beginning. Im not, no. Again, i have a lot of problems with him. I think one of the things i really hate his tweeting. I hate the way he lashes out at people. Thats made me check my own behavior to say i cant blame donald trump for my own behavior when i yell at somebody on twitter. Its not because of donald trump. A lot of the people blame him for their bad behavior. If we drank every time somebody blamed trump for their bad behavior we would be drunk for all of 2019. Pete you are saying on balance were learning more as a country from him than we are explaining away. I think its different. He is just unknown. He is really different kind of person to be president. You must have had finals for high school and harvard at the same time. How did you manage it all . Did you ever feel like giving up . Well, i never necessarily felt like giving up but thats just because i had a really good support team. High school has been very nice to me. They really helped and i appreciate that. Dean i have an 18yearold who is taking a gap year right now. Going to college this year. What advice can you give my son so he can be more like you . Just be yourself. Make sure your education is yours. Dont use any cookie cutter approach. Individualize it. Rachel that is very, very good advice. So, you are very smart and you are a genius. With certain figures, you know, they are really high on one partys rating or really low on anothers. Well, i would really like to go to harvard law school. I think thats an achievable goal and see if i can make that a reality. The fact that the support among latinos remains strong showing that the president is delivering on his promises. If you actually die sent who these voters are, who the supporters are, it tends to be evangelicals and veterans. President trump, he has delivered conservative judges. He has shown he is a strong supporter of our military, when it came to funding, just in general, his speech in the way that he respects our military, proves again that people voted for the right president. Rachel a lot of hispanics enter the military. My dad was one of then. By the way, evangelical voters hispanics is a very fastgrowing demographic within the Hispanic Community. So that makes sense. Unemployment rates for hispanics have never been lower. These are historic numbers. One, Hispanic Community is feeling it. Is donald trump getting credit he deserves . You say you watch a lot of hispanic television. I dont see him on there . He is is not getting credit he deserves. What we hear over and over again is that President Trump is a racist. His administration is full of racists but they really have no facts to back this up. The idea he is a racist for wanting to enforce the immigration laws already on the books is totally ridiculous. If you think about it, legal immigrants in this country, they appreciate Border Security because legal immigrants came here the right way. Illegal immigration hurts the latino community, it lowers wages, brings crimes into communities, overwhelms schools and hospitals. The list goes on and on. Over all look what the administration has done, he is not just helping latinos, he is is helping all americans. The economy is strong. A lot of his policies removing individual mandate on obamacare, that helped a lot of families. That was an expense latino families werent expecting. Just a stronger military, National Security, all of these things help latinos and everyone. What democrats hate this idea that the gop continues to hold this 30 of support among latinos. They think they own latinos and hispanics but they dont. What really, really is frustrating to me, i feel like my fellow latinos and latinas are being duped by democrats. Democrats continue to say the policies help the Hispanic Community. But i havent seen one policy as of lately that would help the hispanic latino community. Rachel thats a good point of the my question is, what would you, if you were advising President Trump, what would you say to him to grow that number from 30 up . Believe me if that number grows any higher, suddenly the latino vote is really, really competitive and game changer in 2020 . President trump and his administration, republicans in general are up against the Misinformation Campaign out there. So they need to try harder to reach out to latinos, get their message out there and explain to them why their policies will help them and better their lives. I dont see a big enough effort from republicans. They say that they are doing a good job in that area, but i havent seen it. Rachel they dont show up. They dont. Would the president be better off if he talked less about the wall and more about the idea of Border Security, which is a lot more comprehensive . I dont know why the wall is so divisive. If he wants to focus on Border Security, use that language more, maybe that will help him. Professor, thank you for being here. Those numbers are jarring. How do we get there . Its remarkable how little history people know and the result is these false analogies all over the place. Everybody is compared to hitler. Everybody is compared to the holocaust. Israel defending itself against gaza rockets. Theyre nazis. Anybody who compares trump or anybody else to hitler essentially is a holocaust denier because what theyre saying well, there were no gas chambers, no auschwitz, no plan to kill six million jews. They minimize it. One million babies and children were killed. People were brought in from the isle of rhodes on boats to auschwitz to kill them. Not enough to kill the people in the way, they had to bring them in because the goal was a massive genocide of everybody who had any kind of jewish blood to say that anything that happened since then is comparable to the holocaust and certainly to compare the american political system to anything that happened in the holocaust is outrageous. Rachel the american taxpayer invices a lot of money in public education. What is happening . Who do you think is to blame for this kind of cultural ignorance, historical ignorance . There are all kinds of programs that people are promoting to teach the holocaust in schools. Not only to teach the holocaust but to teach the holocaust and other forms of horrible experiences that people had. That should be encouraged. That should be encouraged in schools all over the country. Look, the Friends School in new york invited a holocaust denier to come and play his saxophone or whatever he was playing. We see it happening all over. Holocaust denial is minimized today and analogies that people draw is the cruelest form of minimization of the holocaust. Pete how much impact does this terrible education have on the political debates on the state of israel and Israeli Palestinian peace process. If you dont know the past its hard to make a critical judgment about the current. You can disagree with israel or the United States and what they did. The immediate goto is nazis. The immediate goto is apartheid or genocide or the holocaust. And, you know, what it does it not only shows ignorance of the past, it precludes us from being subtle and nuanced. You can criticize israel and other countries are doing without making those kinds of false analogies. The false analogy is so historically inaccurate and so clearly affecting the current debate, and it has to stop. And students have to know what happened only 70 something years ago. Dean my son was a 17yearold senior at the time. Once you go and visit the museum and you see the room full of hair or eyeglasses or the shoes or anything like that, it is so clear what took place. I was a history major in college. For my son seeing it that sort of drove it home. What do we need to do . There was one brave palestinian who built a museum of the holocaust in palestinian territory to teach palestinians that there is no comparison between what they are experiencing and what happened in auschwitz and other places. I made a point of taking each of my three children to the death camps and showing them a where our family came from, our whole family aside from my grandfathers branch of the family was killed. We went to the town where they were killed. We saw the story of a 16yearold girl and a 15yearold boy who were murdered in cold blood. It has an impact and makes you want to prevent anything like that from happening in the future. And it is so important for young people to be exposed to this. Rachel you dont have to go to auschwitz. You can watch a documentary and go to the holocaust museum. You need to make an effort. It is not being taught in school. 9 11 isnt being taught enough in school. They arent learning about stalin. A lot of things going on in public schools. It is incumbent on parents to take the lead on this. Parents are the key to a childs education. If it isnt being done in the school it has to be done at home. History is prologue. What happened in the past is prologue to the future. If we really want never again to become a reality we have to teach our students what actually happened and how american democracy, no matter where you stand on the current president , bears no relationship to what happened in germany in the 1930s. Pete you wrote the case against impeaching trump. Your prediction in 2019 on that front. I think there will be some democrats trying to move toward impeachment. Unless dramatic new evidence comes out, which i dont see happening, i dont think there will be an impeachment of this president or removal of him. He will end his term. Does he get reelected. Thats a political issue. The law shouldnt be abused to use the impeachment mechanism against a person who doesnt qualify under the constitutional criteria.
