Well, i believe, as i read the article, i believe that rioting is actually an unNecessary Evil, even as the alleged comparison to the tea party for example. Of course tea was dumped into the harbor, but no lives for harmed and no stores were bombed or burned or fire bombs. Theres a lady in ferguson, an African American woman, her store was fire bombed and i think basically she asked the question, how would this get justice for michael. Am i supposed to be a sacrificial lamb in this thing . And so during my lifetime open during the times that i marched and went to jail or my father a. D. King or my uncle martin, we were asking people not to riot. But to use our words and to use peaceful protests. Thats not a luxury. Because my house was fire bomb, daddy and mommas house were fire bombed, Martin Luther king, jr. s house was fire bomb. We did not consider those luxurious days. Shes making the argument that these people you see here in the black and white images are, they are from the mainstream, that these arent people who were marginalized, dr. King. These are people who had the luxuries, they had the ability to go out and peacefully march, but they didnt suffer the same injustices that the people in ferguson did. Do you disagree . I would say in the 1950s and 60s there was an imbalance of luxury even in those days. And we were people who were oppressed were fire bombed, called names and all of that. But our response was never violence. There were rioters, of course. And many times, as in the case of ferguson, ive been there two or three times now. And as i was there, you could tell that most of the rioters were not even citizens of ferguson. Now, maybe some feel safe in ferguson, some do not. But those who are not choosing violence, i would not say theyre living in luxury but theyre using their prayers and their words, using peaceful resolution. And that is really sane and sensible. She makes the argument in her opinion piece that after 1992, the riots in los angeles, that violence was a Necessary Evil here because the Police Department in Southern California took notice. They changed after the violence that led to the upheaval and the beating of roddy king. What do you say to that in. In 1963 in birmingham, alabama, i was part of the childrens march experience, and what made the difference there was not the rioting but the thousands of little children who were peacefully marching, peacefully being put in jail. And there was no luxury there when the dogs were biting the children or the insults that were hurled or the water hoses that were blowing the little children down the street. I remember my daddy my mother and daddy had a discussion and my dad says no, al vie da is going. How can i ask other people to let their children go and my daughter will not go. What could happen to a plane and the passengers in it if a drone hits it . In that case a bunch of birds hit the engine. It doesnt have to be the engine. The windshield of the plane you could take the pilot out. Its not hard to do at the speed that airports are going. Theyre going 200 miles per hour. Even something very small can cause a great deal of damage. These are becoming much more come on obviously. In february of 2013 there were 327 drones that were certified by the faa. Theres an estimate that by 2018 that is going to jump up to 7500. I see this and i think certified by the faa. There are some drones that are certified for commercial use but you and i can get a drone and fly that without having any kind of certification at all. If youre a farmer and you fly your drone over your crops and you want to do loops for your personal pleasure. You can do that right now. If you want to fly over your crops and take pictures, youve now violated the faa because thats a commercial use. Youre saying that the faa needs to do something immediately about this rather than waiting on some comprehensive reform. Comprehensive is not necessarily the way to go. You dont need comprehensive laws. You need to take care of the Critical Issues first, keep them away from airports, keep them at a low altitude where the airplanes continue fly and keep them away from populated area. Weve had three secretaries of defense that have been there for a short amount of time. You might think this is a position that somebody would want, but maybe not in this case. You have some ideas as to why this is a problem. First you say the president has been leading from behind. Yeah. The next secretary is going to inherent the policies of the administration which have made america weaker. And theyve shown not just those policies but theyve been micromanaged to the second point from the white house. So theyve micromanaged the pentagon time and time again. The next secretary of defense, its not clear theyll be able to set their own defense policy. And then the third thing you say is the budget cuts in the pentagon, these have been extreme. It doesnt look like that is going to be changing anytime soon. So the person comes in with not that much money to work with. Theyre inheriting sequestration. Were not modernizing. Were not training and equipping the way we should. Why would the next defense secretary want to usher in more cuts and undermined our defenses. So jasonson from Homeland Security looks like may be one of the leading contenders. And he was voted in fairly easily. But now we have a different result of the midterm elections, republicans controlling the senate and the house. What do you think about that . Thats right. Because republicans control the senate, it will be difficult to push along a left wing nominee. Jay johnson dount have any real credentials other than being the pentagon lawyer. He would be sort of a total yes man for the white house on their policies. Its not clear defense minded republicans in the senate would be eager to confirm him with the same latitude they did before and you say there is a short term problem. What do you mean by that . Yeah, this president is a lame duck. And whatever secretary comes in with him is not going to have the time or the runway to initiate real change or real independent thinking on defense thinking. Theyre probably going to have to default again to the white house and their belief about National Security policy. Who wants an 18month job where they cant really change anything. Certainly a tough one. You have some ideas of who you think could be some of the right picks. Tell me about some of your ideas. Im trying to think of who might be palletable to this administration. In a Perfect World i would pick some other folks as well. You got a joe lieberman, former senator from connecticut whereby would make a great secretary of defense. H. R. Mick masters, hes always been a forward thinking military leader and hes been put on some of the toughest ie signments and been to some of the toughest places in iraq. Mad dog mad disis legendary in the marine corps. I dont know if the administration would want to pick him because he would tell us like it is. This nation koubld use a guy like this who wants to defeat the enemy and would give honest feedback to the white house. Guys like this would do a fantastic job. O any idea when you think we might have a name thrown out there by the administration . In my mind they would probably want to do it sooner rather than later to try to squeak it in. I grew up learning football from my father. He was a football coach back in sleepy eye at st. Marys. I was around football and athletics. It worked out. The Young Players on the team accepted me as did all of the other assistant coaches. You joined the staff this year as a volunteer assistant coach. And i love that youre overseeing the kickers and the punters, which we all know they need the most help. They need divine intervention a lot. So how are the players responding to you working with them . They have been so gracious to me, so accepting of who and what i am to the football program. You know, our main kicker, mike thiesmann, is an all american, all conference kicker. So what i really did is i was supportive to him, there for him, helping him out in whatever he needed. You say before you were a nun, you were a teacher and you felt called to become a nun, but you ignored it for a little while. Then you were a nun. You felt called to the football field, and you ignored that for a while and then you did that. How has this changed you and your faith . Well, i think its just enriched it. Its made me realize that god is everywhere, and god can be involved in all different things, including football. So i find the blessings thats coming of this to be outstanding. I have to ask you this question. We have seen a number of stories about the pc police that have been out when you have players that want to get down on bended knee after a touchdown and honoring a fallen friend or something and praying and showing their faith on the football field. And then theyre getting the team is getting hit with a fine or slammed for it in the media. Whats your response to that . Well, you know, at scholastica, we are a catholic college. And so theres not really issues there. But when i see that happening on the national stage, it just really saddens me to think that people are not able to express themselves how they want to express their faith, their belief, and their trust in god. Are there any parallels you find from your job as coach and your job as nun . Definitely. It all relies on god. Its all about giving glory to god. And really the discipline that i learned through playing athletics through coaching is the same discipline that i have to use in my religious life being dedicated to prayer, getting up early, doing what you need to do, and just being the person that god calls you to be. Less than a week after the grand jury cleared him of wrongdoing, Darren Wilson has handed over his badge, but unrest continues in ferguson. Overnight, protesters burning an American Flag. Garrett, how bad did things get last night . Reporter well, you know, i guess its all really relative. Compared to monday night when we had all of these businesses that were loot theed and burned down last night was relatively calm. The hope was that news of the resignation would pacify a lot of the protesters, but really they felt this should have happened months ago. In his Resignation Letter, officer wilson says he was waiting until the grand jury decision to decide whether or not he was going to resign. And after that decision came down, he said he heard about plans and threats against the Ferguson Police department if he remained there. That is really what the Setting Point was for him to take that step and resign. In his letter released to the media last night, it reads in part, it was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other Police Officers and the community is of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. You may remember last month wilson married his girlfriend, who is also a ferguson Police Officer. In an interview with the st. Louis post dispatch, he says the department is also pushing his wife to resign, but so far she is refusing to do so. As news of his resignation spread last night, a crowd of about 150 folks did gather outside of the Ferguson Police department. They were loudly marching up and down the street harassing several folks that left businesses there. As two people were arrested, they were mostly peaceful protests. At one point, though, several protesters set an American Flag on fire and left it burning in the middle of the street. When the crowd moved back after about 20 minutes, members of the National Guard moved in to retrieve pieces of the flag that were still there. Even as the protests continue, though, Business Owners here are still beginning that process of rebuilding, and they are still frustrated. As you can see on the sign behind me, with governor jay nixon, who they say did not act quickly enough in sending the National Guard to protect their businesses here. It might be a sign of the times this morning. Because those protesters in ferguson right now are leading a Time Magazine poll. They do this once a year for their Time Magazine person of the year. And right now the Ferguson Protesters leading that online poll between facebook, twitter, and their website. They are coming in at about 10 , leading the pack right now for person of the year. What a contrast to last years winner being pope francis. Right. And they always say in Time Magazine in their defense, they always say its not the best person chosen as person of the year. Theres been a long line of people who have influenced stories, big news stories, during world war ii and others that werent exactly revered leaders. But they changed the National Dialogue and world dialogue around politics. And Time Magazine doesnt let readers choose the person of the year. This is just what the readers are putting out at this time. But we asked what you thought about who should be times person of the year. Catherine burke ayres says seal team 6 and rob oneal. And susan taylor frison says i voted for benjamin netanyahu. Such a difficult job he has. And another says i voted for reverend billy graham. Sometimes time does this where they have groups of people. A few years ago they did you, the Internet Users. They had a selfie on the front page. The arab spring protesters as well. Time magazine also stirring the pot this morning in a new opinion piece in the back of the magazine. And it calls itself in defense of rioting written by a free lance writer. She makes the argument that rioting is a natural part of our evolution. She says this. Unfortunately, we do not live in a universal utopia. We do not live in a universal utopia where people have the basic human rights they deserve simply for existing. Peaceful protesting is a luxury of those already in mainstream culture. Those who can be assured their voices will be heard without violence, those who can afford to wait for the change they want. So shes making the argument that its a luxury that people can go out and protest. And we need this as a natural evolution. So its ok for all of these Small Business owners, the convenience store, the fast food restaurants, for them to all be just their windows smashed and burned and their goods that they need to sell in order to make money are destroyed . Thats ok in the name of protesting something that has absolutely nothing to do with the cause . Some people point to the boston tea party. The boston tea partiers threw a whole shipment of tea into the Boston Harbor and destroyed all of that. Well, right or wrong, it was at least something that had to do with what they were protesting. They were worried about the tea tax. And they didnt burn down Peoples Stores or cause that kind of damage. Earlier on the show we had the niece of dr. Martin luther king on the show and this is what she had to say. During my lifetime and during the times that i marched and went to jail or my father or my uncle martin, we were asking people not to riot but to use our words and to use peaceful protest. Thats not a luxury because my house was firebombed. We were people who were oppressed, firebombed, called names, and all of that. But our response was never violence. Protesters flying into ferguson that have nothing to do with the community of ferguson trying to attach and raise money. Weve seen fundraising campaigns result of it. Opportunists. Yes. People trying to make money off of whats unfolding in ferguson this morning. Gregory clark is a u. C. Davis economics professor. He has raised a few eyebrows over comments about the American Dream. He claims its dead. He claims really it never was, that we america is basically like medieval england, and that no matter where you live, if you are raised in ferguson, you are raised in a lower socioeconomic status, you are never going to realize the American Dream. No amount of hard work will help you out. Listen to what he has to say. America has no higher rate of social mobility than medieval england. And to preach this to your students and to basically say, hey, you know, education isnt that important. Youre going to have to deal with the hand of cards youre dealt. There are certain zip codes you can be born in that might make things easier for you. But the american system is set up that if you work hard and study hard and you are disciplined, you can achieve anything you want. And thats the difference. Rightly or wrongly, there is a great mistrust of Police Forces in the plaque community. 70 of blacks feel they are treated less fairly than whites are by the police. 37 of whites feel the same way. So whether its perception or reality, its something that has to be dealt with. And, you know, anything that can stop the tension or relieve the tension and violence in streets across the country is a good thing. You are on your show today will be speaking to Darren Wilsons attorney. Of course the news overnight breaking that wilson has resigned from the Ferguson Police department. This hour it appears from our own reporting that his wife is also being asked to resign or being pushed out. At this hour, it seems that shes being remaining defiant and not going to be doing that. Youll be talking to his attorney today. What will you ask him . I want to ask him clearly about that. And also were going to have a joint interview as you justice with judge jeanine as you just had on the screen with the attorney for Darren Wilson but also the attorney for the brown family. And also get a sense of the trial that were never going to see. What does daryl parks feel is the stron Darren Wilson, the strongest reason that the grand jury should have indicted him. And well obviously give his attorney an opportunity to respond to that. There are different sides to this argument, the way people interpret this case. And the evidence, the forensic evidence. So we want to get into all of that with them. And then also this isnt the end of it, because the brown family is seriously considering a civil lawsuit against Darren Wilson and against the Ferguson Police department. So well talk about that as well with both of them. And what kind of sense are you getting from i know your producers do preinterviews. What kind of a sense are you getting from them about what the civil suit could possibly entail . Well, i have done some reporting on this myself. And, you know, obviously it would be a belief that this is a wrongful death, that Darren Wilson shouldnt have shot and killed michael brown. And they havent firmly decided. Well see if we get some news today as to whether they have decided to go ahead with the civil lawsuit. Well also take a look at the bigger picture. Obviously, this has awakened as we talked about at the beginning in terms of eric holders tour, feelings of mistrust in the community. And were going to talk about that with mayor rudy giuliani, the former mayor of new york city, and the head of the National Urban league, mark morial, as to whether giuliani believes that the biggest problem in black communities is blackonblack crime. I think morial would agree theres a problem there but also believes that racism in the enforcement of the laws by the police in black communities is also a problem. So whats the stance from the freedom from Religion Foundation . Its hard to understand, because over 2,500 different School Districts across the country have elective courses like this. And its not a religion course. Its teaching the bible as literature and history. When you look at the english language, few things have had more impact in shaping our language than the King James Bible, shakespeare, the oxford dictionary. They are fundamental. And its hard to understand the meaning of a lot of the phrases you hear every day unless you have an understanding of the bible. Well, heres what the copresident says of the freedom from Religion Foundation. She says its not a victory not only for reason and the law, but the sack row sanct audience of students to be free from indoctrination in a Public School setting. She says kids shouldnt have to be subjected to this even if it is an elective. They are a wolf in sheeps clothing. The idea here is that this has been upheld by the Supreme Court, and that the bible can be taught as literature and history. For instance, take the constitution, article, i think, one, section seven, talks about the exemption for sundays on the pocket veto. Why is that . Well, its because of the understanding of the sabbath. You wouldnt understand that completely unless you understood the connection between our history as a nation and the teachings of the bible. So its again not teaching as a religion. Its not teaching it as anything other than literature and history, and its shaping of western civilization, in particular the united states. I helped get it in louisiana schools when i was in office about 15 years ago, and its been successfully taught. No problems, no challenges. Im a little troubled as to why this school in oklahoma would back away. I think in part its because of the false claims of these atheists organizations. But i think theres folks like the greens who had this curriculum put forward understand this is our cross to bear. Theyll continue walking the straight and narrow and try to get these options out there for students. Some parents want to expose their kids to the bible not just as church but on a more consistent basis, and some students do as well. Do you see any issues with this at all . I mean, if it was another religion, do you think that would be banned too according to the freedom from Religion Foundation . I dont think they would have an issue with it. I wouldnt have an issue with learning other religions. If someone wants to take that as an elective course. Again, this is not a religion course. It is a literature and history course, understanding how the King James Bible has shaped our language in this country, and how its influenced the laws and our customs in our country. You cannot be a complete citizen and understand our language, our customs, our laws unless you have some understanding of the influence that the bible, the King James Version of the bible, had in shaping our culture. And tick off opponents to this move and to get basically an internet parlance to control the republicans, to get them to freak out, to make him seem more reasonable. And so far, it hasnt quite worked, not because republicans arent really mad but because republicans cant get around one simple and clearcut way to respond. Its very clear that this White House Leaks blockbuster news to fox news, and yet fox news got the reason he did that. They wanted to enrage people that watch fox news and blow up washington, in effect. Did it work . The republicans leaving for thanksgiving break were all befuddled. Reporters were asking republicans as they were getting on airplanes to fly home, whats the response . And they didnt have a clear answer. Do you think when they come back theyll have a clear answer . My guess is no. And to be honest, i think what hes doing is constitutionally dubious. I think it is politically and morally irresponsible, even on his own terms, the things that obama is doing tonight really make a lot of sense. The distinctions he draws between the people hes going to carve in and carve out of this policy are completely arbitrary. And what he is doing on a constitutional level is terrible. That said, im not sure its in the republicans or in the countrys best interests to freak out, because obamas policy doesnt really work unless the republicans freak out and make it look really reasonable. And if instead they sort of bide their time in how to respond, that might be better for republicans and it might drive the white house nuts. That said, there are lots of republicans who really want to punish him for this. And im sympathetic in principle. What hes doing is outrageous. But the proposals that people are talking about, disinviting him from the state of the union, you know i mean, burning bags of dog poop on the white house lawn, none of that stuff will really work and it will make the gop seem to be overreacting. Well be in the heat of the election cycle in 2015. For the republicans to come out and slam the president on Immigration Reform or blanket amnesty could really hurt them. What the republicans should do in my view, if i had to propose something, i dont really get into that business, is take the high road and reject the whole comprehensive Immigration Reform approach, and do what theyve been doing, offer piecemeal solutions to specific problems. Make the president the one who vetoes and blocks it and refuses to do anything about fixing these small specific common sense problems, and put the lie to obamas statement that all he needs is an immigration bill to fix the problem. Those protests last night, they look like they were bad, but these shelled out businesses stands as a reminder of just how awful things were on monday and by that standard, things last night werent that bad. The hope was that they would be better with the announcement of Darren Wilsons resignation. But for the most part, protesters said that should have happened months ago. In his letter of resignation, Darren Wilson said that he was waiting until the grand jurys decision before deciding his future. And after that announcement came, he said it was because of threats to the Ferguson Police department if he did not resign that he then chose to do so. In his letter that reads in part, it was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other Police Officers and the community is of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. Last month, wilson married his girlfriend, who is a ferguson Police Officer. In an interview with the st. Louis post dispatch, he says the Ferguson Police department is now asking her to resign, as well, but so far she is refusing to do so. As news of his resignation spread last night, a crowd of about 150 folks gathered outside the Police Department. They were loudly marching up and down the street, harassing a few while they left businesses there. The protests were mostly peaceful. At one point, several protesters sent an American Flag on fire and left it burning in the middle of the street. When the crowd left, National Guard troops rushed in to pick up the pieces. Businesses here are now stuck deciding what they are going to do with their own futures. Are they going to rebuild in the community that did this or are they going to move on elsewhere . That is something theyre coming back today as the treat is opening again to decide. The irs has abused powers by turning over private taxpayer data. Thats a federal crime. Its a federal law that was passed in response to what the democrats thought Richard Nixon was doing. Now, its become the Standard Operating Procedure at the irs. There was a pro family group, for example, that was in favor of traditional marriage. And irs officials leaked their private taxpayer information to a gay group that was opposinged to traditional marriage. Its a federal crime. Has there been a prosecution . Of course not. Because this Administration Using prosecutorial discretion to help their friends and hurt their enemies. Thats anyone lost their job over this . No. Thats the last part of the last six years. Whenever somebody abuses power, whether its the doj, the irs, wherever, nobody is ever held accountable. Joining me now is retired Sergeant William cole and your beautiful dog, hank. Thanks so much for joining us this morning. Thank you for having me. You know, you served in iraq and afghanistan. You lost one of your closest friends in battle. And from what i understand, you got hank when he was 10 weeks old and he made a huge difference in your life. Yeah. When i first got hank, yeah, he was a puppy and the intention was to, you know, have a service dog and somebody who could be there because after, you know, quite a while in the military, you know, after four deployments, it took its toll on me. And, you know, medication and therapy just, you know, wasnt working like it was supposed to. A and, you know, so i went the service dog route and it ended up being the best decision ive ever made. How long did it take until hank began to make a difference in your life . Oh, hank, even when you know, before he started doing the majority of his training and the majority of his work, he started making a very Significant Impact in my life. You know, he kind of from the getgo, he understood, you know, why he was there and what he needed to do. And so sorry about that. Hes he just hes pretty uncomfortable in a certain spot just because of the surgery that he had. And maybe a little camera shy. So tell us, what happened to hank . He had a bad accident. He got out of the backyard and was hit by a car. Tell me about what happened. Well, when he was when we were living in college station, hank was in the backyard for a couple minutes because he goes out for a potty break. And when i went back outside, he wasnt there and the gate was cracked open. And so when we went outside, i grabbed my neighbor and we were looking for him. And sadly, whenever someone saw me, they said, hey, is hank your dog . I said yeah. They said he was hit by a car. Luckily, he was taken to, you know, a veterinary hospital fairley quickly. And, you know, that was luckily the saving factor because much longer, i dont know how much longer he would have made it. Yeah. So now i hear you have a vet appointment on wednesday and thats going to determine how hes going to do, if he needs more surgery. Is that right . Yes, sir. So hank fractured his c4 in his spine. He both both scapulas and he had a significant portion of his lung removed on his left side. So hes pretty uncomfortable and its pretty hard getting him, you know, to sit still. But the doctor appointment on wednesday is really going to determine, you know, where we go next. Hes going to have hesitate repeat radiograph and the doctor is going to look and make sure hes doing okay and then, you know, wile kind of go from there. Yeah. And i would imagine him but the veterinary hospital has been great. I would imagine this has cost you a lot of money. Yes, sir, yes, sir. Right now, were right at around 11,000. And then, you know, after the repeat radiographs and, you know, future primary care appointments, it could, you know, be an ongoing, you know, lifetime of care, depending on his fractures and, you know sure. And hank is 2 1 2 years old, is that right . Yes, sir, yeah. Hank is 2 1 2 years old and he is you know, hes a young dog, so he definitely has the will and the drive to get better. So i hope he does. Thank you for having me. When this initially happened to your business, i imagine your heart was in your stomach after saving up money to put your heart and soul into this. What was your initial reaction . I cried. I cried and i was in a state of grief for few days. Shortly thereafter, that grief turned to shock and joy. Not only in ferguson, but across the country. I have so many people to donate to might see my business, so myself and my children, and i just absolutely appreciate everything that everyone has done for me. So donations poured in from all over the place. When did you find out that money was coming your way to help your business rebuild . What did that feel like . It was pretty amazing. Christine, when she called from new orleans and said hey, i want to help you. She said im not in a position where i can help the entire community of ferguson, but i want to help you keep the bakery doors open. And she said, let me start a go fund me page. She said have you ever heard of that . I said not at all. I was totally clueless to what dofundme was all about. She asked me for my necessary information, you know, some of my personal information to get the site started. Before i knew it, an hour later she called me back and said hey b, were at 8,000. I was so busy trying to get orders, continuing to be processed in the kitchen because the kitchen wasnt damaged and just trying to get the orders out for thanksgiving that i never really had time to just sit and monitor that page. And i went from 8,000 to 40,000 and then she called me a few hours later and it was at 160,000. And it just kept going. So im just amazingly grateful for everything, absolutely. So often, we see this outpouring of support after National Disasters and things. This was something that other humans destroyed. Just destruction.
