beverly hilton in california late yesterday afternoon in l.a. >> dave: we're going to kttv reporter hal eisner, been there all night. hal, what do we know, we've heard some reports and some whispers about a bathtub. good morning to you. >> reporter: right. good morning to you, and it was just a little over two hours ago that whitney houston's body was taken from the beverly hilton hotel where we are right now, and taken to the los angeles county coroner's office where there will be an autopsy and it will be determined exactly how she died. there were reports from tmz, specifically, that she was found dead in the bathtub, i personally haven't been able to confirm that and reporting and based on conversations they say they had with employees of the hotel. police though have said, they have he' said it to me there were no signs of foul play. the time line on all of this at 3:43. yesterday afternoon los angeles time beverly hills police got a call for medical help from someone in houston's entourage. when they got to her fourth floor room at beverly hills hotel, security was trying to resuscitate here, didn't have any luck, and she was pronounced dead. and they went through hotel him. four floors below some of the hollywood's ewalking the red carpet and preparing for the grammy party. whitney houston was here to attend that party which turned into a more of a memorial to wit whitney and share something else as well. this plaza where we're standing was just filled with whitney houston fans and brought a few flowers and a couple of candles, but brought their voices and then what we saw out here with the few tears were dozens and dozens of people singing whitney houston songs, a tremendous amount of motion here in beverly hills. we'll throw it it back to you in new york. >> dave: i'm struck by this and i'm sure you've covered the stories in the past. given los angeles that this happened in 3:55 in the afternoon and stars downstairs and no word later in evening. was it because of the cover of all the celebrities in the lobby that we didn't know about this until late? >> well, the time line, actually the time line is interesting. we were coming over here to report on this party gone on, 30 years, call it the hottest ticket in town before the grammys and coming here about five o'clock and it was just before four o'clock our time. remember the time difference, that she was pronounced dead. the news actually got out within about an hour or so afterwards and we came over here, instead of covering the party we were now covering the death of a major, major recording artist. >> alisyn: and hal, thanks so much for the update there. obviously, we'll check back in with you as the investigation progresses just what happened in that hotel room. and police say there were no illegal drugs found, the first reports out and people wonder abouted that she had a long public struggle with substance abuse. >> dave: he mentioned the grammys there, as they say the show must go on and well, it is tonight. and they do plan to pay tribute to wit whitney, jennifer hudson is being brought in for some sort of tribute. you see right there, a clip to me think this would have been a bigger loss for mitt romney than it is actually for a win. this is in his back yard, it's new england. had ron paul gone up there and won that would have been tough. >> clayton: you bring up the 190 votes and ron paul was upset, he thought because this is not wrapped up there are actually a couple of areas in maine that haven't completed their caucuses and so, while they were-- >> part of the issue, right. >> alisyn: always is. >> clayton: but they continue the caucusing in certain counties in maine for a little longer and knew they were going to deliver the results yesterday, but ron paul speaking in maine yesterday talked about that and he thinks actually he may have actually won if they count up the later ones. listen to him. >> one slightly discouraging announcement, i wish all the caucuses-- i think we would have done very, very well, but we lost by almost 200 votes, 190 votes, almost you could call it a tie, but anyway, the votes will be counted and all the caucuses will be, but a prediction, if i were a betting man and-- if i were a betting man i would bet that we would control the maine caucus. >> dave: there is his point they will be allocated later and he still could control those delegates. >> alisyn: he was in good humor last night making jokes, but possibly even a bigger victory, at least a psychic victory at cpac in washington d.c. because he won the straw poll and that's significance because he's been trying to prove his conservative credentials and that's a big endorsement for the conservatives there. >> dave: he's won this before. he's not a big straw poll guy. we expect ron paul to typically win straw polls, but he was not there, his army of people were not there, but this certainly continues or gets some momentum back on the side of mitt romney. it doesn't squash the insurgents of rick santorrum, but a big weekend. >> clayton: a look at actual numbers as they break down. marco rubio. >> alisyn: they asked about v p's, who they wanted for vp. >> dave: no surprise. >> clayton: take a look at this, this is marco rubio with 34% now and that's who would have, who most of the folks in that audience would like to see as vp. chris christie also with 9%, governor mcdonnell, 9% a romney supporter and representative paul ryan with 8%. >> dave: no matter how many times marco rubio says i'm not taking the vp slot, everybody wants him, even more than chris christie, who i think is emerging as more of a possibility. >> alisyn: interesting. so, sarah palin is a crowd favorite, a darling of cpac and him of hating the indian tribe. the senator has bruised ribs and his wife has a concussion and a possible broken nose and reports say one of the men and two women involved in the fight were arrested. the new york archbishop timothy dolan counting down the days until he becomes a cardinal. the second highest in the roman catholic church just under the pope n a matter of minutes, he is expected to arrive in rome and begin a week long spiritual journey and culminate at 21 other men and a ceremony at st. peters basilica and the pope will elevate him to that position and we'll cover that, if they >> reporter: good morning, we have been following this story all night and in fact, new video just in from beverly hills, california. this is the coroner van bearing the body of whitney houston. it's departing the beverly hilton hotel en route to the l.a. county coroner's office where an autopsy will be performed. the 48-year-old pop sensation was found dead in her hotel room in beverly hills late saturday afternoon. police say there are no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time, but there's still no word on the cause of her death. now, investigators were combing houston's hotel room well into the night and tmz reporting no illegal drug found, but there were prescription drug inside the room. the site says the icon's body was found in the bathtub and the possibility that she may have drown. as you know, she was born into a music cal family, the daughter of grammy winning gospel singer, sissy houston, and cousin, and god mother aretha franklin. and she was on stage, kevin costner and the preacher's wife denzel washington, but they are image wag drug use and tumultuous marriage to singer bobby brown. married 14 years before divorcing about six years ago. this video taken one night before houston died. she joined singer kelly price on stage for a pre-grammy concert to perform jesus loves me. and of course that would end up being her last performance. and houston likely to cast a heavy cloud over tonight's grammy awards celebration, but artists such as jennifer hudson and cha ka cannes plan to play a music tribute to the legend. she was the recipient of six grammys, one emmy and 22 american music awards. fellow singer mariah carey summing it up, saying houston will quote, unquote, never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth. goodness. how the weather is. >> not yet, well, the temperatures outside are very chilly today across not just the northeast, but pretty much all the way down into florida we're looking at temperatures below freezing and of course, it's a big concern because a lot of crops out there haven't been dealing with freezing temperatures recently and could produce problems. the reason it's so cold outside. yesterday's arctic front swept the piece coast and bringing snow for us in new york city, even though it doesn't accumulate late. we had some accumulating snow further off to the south and we to have some video from asheville, where some of the high elevations up to four inches of snow, you can see it coming down out there, a beautiful scene and many areas have not had a winter, or is been so mild out there this past winter season so that's nice weather out there to enjoy and i'm sure they had a good time. it looks like, out there. now, as far as the weather for today. we're looking at lake effect snow ending across portions of the northeast and lake ontario, you can produce another foot of snow out there to the west of syracuse and well below averages temps from texas all the way up through maine and it's chilly out across portions of texas, oklahoma could be looking at the next system producing across texas. not a whole lot. an inch to three inches of snow out there. today's forecast across the northeast and boston's high of only 27 degrees, 34 in philadelphia and those breezy conditions, guys, going to feel at least 5 to 10 degrees cooler as we head out the door and southeast is sunny and chilly side. 54 degrees will be the high temperature and orlando is well below average for florida. if you're headed out to the parks, portions of the upper midwest and sunshine, high temperature in indianapolis, 31 degrees and portions of the central rockies and stay as well and some additional snow, guys, head into monday and have another system arriving three main things, one, last week jobs numbers and most jobs created in nine months, 240,000, unemployment rate lowest in three years, and state of the union speech for the president had a chance to craft his accomplishments and propose an optimistic plan for the future and three, i think the republicans with the thousands of debates, negative attacks against each other, i think it sort of turned off, i think, maybe independent voters. >> dave: let's take those in two, one, is it simply the jobs numbers and two, have the republican attacks hurt the party and helped the president? >> well, it's certainly possible, but i want to say, there's only a 3% rise and that was within the margin of error and we should be careful about interpreting these. if the train comes into the station five minutes late. if obama goes up in the polls it doesn't mean that the public opinion changed. >> the head to head where i get interested in this. it was close and we've seen romney in the lead and now the head to head you see on the screen now, did not look good for any of the republican candidates and what do you make of that? >> i don't think it's really going to matter the. i think once the republicans have settled on the candidates of their choice, you're going to start seeing the focus. and the polls are going to look like a braxton hicks contraction and the just like the jobs number. >> why have the republican candidates fallen relative to the president if it's about choosing one, why have they all fallen? >> well, quite frankly, i don't believe the polls, i think a lot of the polling is done with heavy liberal lean and coming off the job numbers, you would expect him to sort of take a bit of a bump. and what people aren't discussing, the number of people that fell off looking for jobs in january and again, when we start focusing on those issues, as it pertains to obama and getting away from the supposed infighting from republicans, it's going to shift back. >> and this is a fox news poll and one other troubling number for romney in another poll, more than one out of two people say that the more they know about romney, the less they like. and you know, i really-- the polls will fluctuate and people had three years to get to know president obama and he needs to channel the late admiral who famously said, who am i? why am i here? romney needs to do that and people need to know him better. >> it's true they know president obama, a lot of people don't know the other republican candidates especially in nonprimary states, they aren't paying attention yet. i've been travelling promoting my book and a lot of people don't know who santorum is, don't know his policy and god help him if they google him. >> dave: let's not get into the google problem this morning. one of the interesting developments yesterday was not just romney's win cpac in maine. he needed one or both. suddenly, i heard the question, should newt gingrich get out of the field when a week ago we were talking about rick santorrum getting out and now that newt's biggest fundraiser is out, where can he gather back momentum? we have no debate until the 22nd. newt is like a pit bull in this race and he always comes back. >> he does. >> and i think that people have counted him out so many times, i think what happens with newt, when he gets into the debate time, that's when people really get a chance to see him shine and they see the depth of his knowledge of politics so he'll swing back a little bit. ultimately i'll tell you he's probably got a difficult time winning the nomination because you aren't debating all the time. >> dave: especially in the heart of the debates is in the pack, they are spars. >> just as we know, we think we know what it's going to be, it changes. a big night, and week for santorum. a big night for the cpac for romney much better than four years ago, and definitely a bump up. and maine, head to head, romney 38-36 and certainly romney is not running away with it and playing out. santorum was clearly the main rival right now. >> dave: i think the disturbing pattern for the romney folks, he's receiving less votes in states than he "fox & friends" hour two starts. ♪ >> ♪ well, if you're just waking up and out last night and missed this news, it's certainly shocking news that whitney houston obviously iconic singer, she died last night at the age of 48. she's a legend, she was found in her hotel room at the beverly hilton in california. the timing is just so poignant because of the grammys tonight and so many of her friends and her proteges and her loved ones were there to celebrate at the grammys. >> dave: and the news media was headed to hotel for a party by clive davis himself. and kttv reporter hal eisner has been there all morning, what's the latest? >> a little over three hours ago that whitney houston's body was taken from the beverly hilton hotel here in beverly hills, california to the los angeles county coroner's office near downtown l.a. they will be the ones who will determine why the 48-year-old singer died. we're told there will be an autopsy. there were reports from tmz she was found dead in the bathtub. they say they got their information from hotel workers and police said there's no signs of foul play and the time line on all of this, at 3:43 yesterday afternoon an l.a. time, west coast time, beverly hilton police got call from medical help from someone in houston's entourage and she had a very large one from what we're told, when they got to her fourth floor room here at beverly hilton, hotel security was trying to resuscitate her, it didn't work and paramedics took over and tried for 20 minutes to no avail and pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. 3:55 los angeles time that's just five minutes over 12 hours ago. and exactly 12 hours ago, and it's been a dizzying 12 hours for all of the night police were going through her hotel room, trying to determine what had happened in the hours prior to her death. while four floors below, almost in a very eerie thing, they were partying, a pre-grammy party, a big one, hottest ticket in town, the clive davis party, she was supposed to be there instead that became more after memorial service and outside this hotel, in this plaza area, groups of people gathered and they were singing whitney houston songs. it was a-- it was very emotional. we'll throw it back to you. >> i'm curious, you were there, in fact, the pre-grammy party and were you there when people started to learn the news. what was the mood in the room, suddenly, did you get to see it as a wave of emotion? >> well, we have these two magic words, please and thank you. they have two more, hello and goodbye. hello, the french parents are religious about making them say hell he low. french parents told me again and again, make them to realize there are other people in the world out of their own selfish bubble. and that it changes the whole tone of interaction. >> alisyn: you talk about french parents not really disciplining their children. however, they have nonverbal cues, including big eyes. can can can you demonstrate for us what french parents do when their children misbehave. >> they talk about the big eyes. i'm not sure i can do it very well on television. but my kids, you know, it's a look. the look comes out of this relationship that french parents try to cultivate with their children, complicity. they say you can have authority with your kids, but also, listen to them and it's just a balance between being strict about key things, please and thank you, politeness and actually giving the children freedom with everything else and i think it's that combination that french kids really respond to. and here is another fascinating difference, and you know, american kids taxol obesity of course, the french don't so much. allow only one snack a day. how does that work? >> well, whitney houston died 13 hours ago. it was a little over four hours ago that her body was taken from the beverly hilton here in beverly hills to the los angeles coroner's office near downtown l.a. there have been reports specifically tmz that she was found unresponsive in her bathtub that she may have drowned. some of those reports attributed to hotel workers it will be up to the coroner to determine by the 48-year-old singer died. police told me there were no obvious signs of foul play. time line on all of this at 3:43 in the afternoon west coast time yesterday, beverly hills police got a call from medical help from someone in houston's entourage. when they got to her fourth floor room here at the beverly hilton. hotel security workers were trying to resuscitate her. paramedics took over. that didn't work either. for 20 minutes they tried. she was pronounced dead 3:55 p.m. west coast time yesterday afternoon. just 13 hours ago. all right. investigators throughout the night combed through her hotel room. they were looking for clues why she died. while her body was up in the room the detectives did their work four fours below some of hollywood's most famous celebrities were walking the red carpet talking to us about their shock and preparing for what unarguably has been the hottest ticket pregrammy party around. a party, that turned into more of a memorial service as celebrity after celebrity got up to the podium and had something to say about whitney houston. we'll go back to you in new york now. >> alisyn: hal, thank you so much for the update there if you are just waking up, this is shocking news. reminds people of michael jackson because she was the sound track to all of our lives. there are so few people who everybody knows from my mother to my husband to the person on the street. to the guy who drives the taxy. everybody listens to whitney. she crossed all demographics. >> to have seven consecutive number one hits by an artist not rivaled since the beatles were the ones that managed to pull that of o. then comes whitney houston who is able to pull that off. that's a remarkable thing. >> that really is one of them "i will always love you" the love song of our generation number one for 14 straight weeks. you could not have a song do that today. it's a different era musically. but 14 straight weeks. six grammys she won. 26 nominations, the grammys tonight obviously will be a lot about whitney houston, jennifer hudson will perform. will l cool jay. the host will speak about whitney houston's life as well. >> most watched grammys for years. ratings down for years. >> ratings were well last year. went they up to 26 million people. >> alisyn: the times -- timing of this. she was there for the grammy. her last known performance videotape was thursday night. because she was working with a singer, a young singer, sort of singing along with her in a duet, but so many young singers have come out and via twitter or facebook expressed their sadness today. christine aguilar are a is one of them. she said whitney's voice so special to me. her voice soared to places most singers wish. she'll be missed. >> condolences to her family. she will never are forgotten. of course, dolly parton. the song made even more famous by whitney houston, mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of whitney houston. i will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song. can i truly say from the bottom of my heart, i will always love you you will be missed. >> she leaves behind the one daughter bobbi christina we should mention as well. a lot is happening in the political world. a big weekend for mitt romney. the biggest take away i think is that we are not sitting here this morning talking about more mitt romney no, loss. they may not be huge wins. they do not so as maine goes so does the country. he does win the maine caucus albeit a a very narrow margin over ron paul. >> not all the precincts have reported in yet. he did get 39% of plurality not the 50% he was looking for. he did eke it out. good day for mitt romney after he lost as you remember those three caucus states in minnesota, missouri, and colorado to rick santorum. the bigger news is he won the cpac straw poll. >> this was a pretty big number. the crowd is not really moved by mitt romney and watching her report on the 5. here we go. 38% gave the straw poll results to mitt romney. rick santorum 31% there. newt gingrich 15%. a question that andrea an tear rose wanted to ask after the speech is have you given up with this crowd and you see those numbers there? >> alisyn: let's ask chris wallace. is he goings to join us now. hi,chris. >> good morning. >> is this more of the romney roller coaster? he is up? he is down, he wins, he loses? what's going on. >> what's going on is this republic electorate doesn't seem to be sold any of these four candidates and almost as if when one of them is like whack a mole when one of them gets his head above water the give them a whack. >> romney needed a victory. cpac it's a straw poll. maine nonbinding caucus and not many delegates involved. he needed us to be on the air saying romney scores two victories after suffering three big defeats on thursday in colorado, minnesota and missouri. >> wouldn't it be something if wield be talking about a loss in maine and loss at the cpac conference. i don't think anyone is saying as maine goes so goes the country. if we were talking about a loss it would really hurt romney going forward, right? >> yeah. you can argue it's the positive he won or the negative that he didn't lose. in either case, he is very happy with it. i think it's important for him he won the straw -- -- straw poll. conservative activist, that's the group that romney has failed to excite and to mobilize. he won there. now, some would say, look, it's only 3,000 people and apparently romney encouraged, you know, and i put that in quotes, a bunch of kids, college kids on the east coast to come down and vote. anybody who was at the conference could vote. so it's hardly a scientific poll again it's better to have bon the cpac than have lost it. >> they were asked is there excitement in here for mitt romney. she is saying no not really among the crowd of folks she was speaking to. people weren't really invoking his name. you heard rick santorum talking. he was referring to the guy from massachusetts. sarah palin speaking yesterday from the conference. it was interesting. did she talk about mitt romney in these words? let's listen and have you respond. >> our candidate must be someone who can instinctively turn right to constitutional conservative principles. it's too late in the game to teach it or to spin it at this point. it's either there or it isn't. >> chris, who is she referring to. >> pretty clear to me. >> i have to say i had the same reaction that you did when i heard it fortunately, we have an exclusive interview with sarah palin at the top of the hour. and i guess i can say i'm going to ask her exactly that it sure did seem. i had the same reaction you did that's what she was talking about. it was so interesting watching palin who just blew the lid off that conference in her keynote speech last night. you know, romney obviously doesn't seem quite at ease with conservative activists. even gingrich and santorum failed to sort of light the fire cracker the way she did. i mean, she just had that crowd fired up. and she has an ability and i'm sure when some people look at that they think, gee, what might have been. because she has an ability to ignite conservative activists. i'm not anybody else in america does. >> might have been or what some say could be. she told the "new york times" that she thinks a brokered convention could actually be a good thing for the party. a brokered convention in no one gets the 1144 delegates and someone could come off the bench for the nomination. one, do you think that that could be a good thing for the republic party and could someone actually come out of left field? [ laughter ] >> i was intrigued by some of the technologies i had read up the fact that you could track a space shuttle with an s band radar. it happens to be part of the weapons system for the u.s. navy. i asked a couple of friends to do some math for me and found out that this could track a reentry vehicle and wrote a paper on how that might benefit the u.s. navy in terms of missile theater defense. gave it to a congressman friend of mine who gave it to vice cham of the armed services committee who called him back and said is this guy from boeing or something? he said no is he a guitar player for doobie brothers. next thing i knew i was an opportunity to be involved with the armed services committee and reported to the pentagon. >> that's incredible. we are curious how a rock and roll guy passes a background check for the department of defense. >> tell the truth. >> tell the truth. i have never considered that one, actually. >> very simple. >> keep that in mind next time you years old. >> yeah. we should let you know that she died at the beverly hilton hotel. she was declared dead just before 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon local time there apparently one of her "entourages" called hotel security. they tried administering cpr and tried calling paramedics. by the time they got to the hotel room they couldn't do anything to revive her. still very mysterious exactly why she died. >> she was declared about 4:00 pacific time. reports from tmz are that whitney houston was found in a bathtub. there was no illegal drugs in her hotel room. though there were >> the universal service fund funds the lifeline and link-up program. the entire fund collects $7.7 billion. it was originally intend just to provide basic telephone service for poor individuals. they expanded that to cover cell phones in 2008. now they are talking about it to cover broad band. so they will buy computers for people. we're not sure where it's going. doing that without any additional authority from congress. they can just decide that they can provide this at the taxpayer's expense. >> look at this number from 2008, $772 million is what that program cost. it cost the lifeline back then. take a look in 2011, jumps up to $1.6 billion. and even our own dave briggs walking right through there it says he actually was curious about some of his cell phone bill numbers. why the big jump up in the numbers on our cell phone bill. $1.6 billion. why does that program have to expand that big? >> that's when they started adding cell phones back in 2008. prior to that it was simply a land line and it was intended literally as a lifeline to be used in the case of an emergency. if you go on the internet and look up free cell phone web sites, they tell you you can get 250 free minutes. you can get a free cell phone. you can call your friends, your family. certainly it's not being used for its intended purpose. a lot of people are getting multiple cell phones and reselling them on ebay and craigslist. there is hundreds of millions of dollars in fraud in this case. >> no surprise. i remember when cell phones came out the idea was you would keep it your car for an emergency. the idea behind this program. it is being taken to a different level, right? >> well, because it is assemble that represents all the rights we have. in other people in other countries might wish they have that and stuff like that. yeah, sure, of course. you are getting a real civics lesson here. you testified in front of the state legislature, i believe, this past week. what's 'been like working on. there is video of you. what's that like? >> it was kind of scary. i was kind of nervous about it. >> it seems like did you a good job. andrew, is it cool to be proud of your country at your age? what do the other kids think of you and your pride in our pledge of allegiance? >> well, i think it is. i'm not sure about other kids most of the kids at my school are proud of belief. >> i don't want to rain on your parade, some lawyers say it is unconstitutional to force kids to say the pledge of allegiance every day because of freedom of speech. how are you going to get past that? you were headed to the hotel for coverage of the big party. and you found out the story had changed dramatically. good morning. >> reporter: oh, absolutely. good morning, and good morning, everybody, it was -- we were on our way to the pre-grammy party and the news broke that whitney houston died, 14 hours ago. a little over 5 hours ago, her body was taken from the beverly hilton hotel, to the los angeles county coroner's office which is near downtown los angeles. there were reports from tmz according to hotel workers her body was found in her bathtub, in the bathtub in her hotel room. but, that is not verified, from us at this point. and, it all will be up to the coroner who will don autopsy and determine the cause of death of the 48-year-old singer. police told me, though, there were no obvious signs of foul play. 3:43, yesterday afternoon, west coast time, beverly hills police got a call for medical help from someone in houston's entourage and they got to the 4th floor room, hotel security workers tried to resuscitate her and paramedics tried and there was no success with that and she was pronounced dead 3:55 p.m., west coast time, 14 hours ago. all night investigators combed the room, and while the body was still thinly radio and detectives did the work, four floors below, in a ballroom celebrities were trying to deal with the news that a party that has been a celebration, over three decades, tonight the kinks were playing, ray davies from the kinks and he was playing with elvis costello and jackson browne and it was supposed to be fun and exciting and yet it was overshadowed by the death of whitney houston and the investigation continuing here in beverly hills, this morning. we'll throw it back to you in new york. >> alisyn: thanks so much for the update there. from outside of the hotel where whitney died. we appreciate it and we should say, tmz, we haven't been able to confirm it. they report there were prescription pill bottles, no illegal drugs found in her hotel room, but prescription pill bottles and that jumps to people's minds, because whitney in the later years was seen as having a substance abuse problem, and, she has been in and out of rehab, the first thing people think and there is no official word of what caused her death. >> clayton: she went on oprah to declare she was free of drugs a few years ago and slipped back in, again, to drug use, over the past few years. and, just a tragic loss, and we should mention, hal talked about the celebration there last night, pre-grammy and everyone thought it would be a big celebration and tonight the grammy awards are tonight and, jennifer hudson will perform, shaka chan, a lot of big performances and they'll pay tribute to her. >> dave: you think of the super bowl, 1991, when she did that amazing national anthem with the back drop of the persian gulf war and you think of the lows, too, and the interview she did with diane sawyer in which she said, cute, the biggest devil is me, i'm my best friend or my worst enemy and we saw the highs and the lows, and, up to you, what you remember but to remember her at her peak. unrivaled, in terms of a model, a singer and a performer that captured your imagination. >> alisyn: and i don't know in we have the video, from two nights ago, thursday night, the last known performance that she gave. there it is. she was with kelly price, a young singer, singing "jesus loves me" and everybody said that whitney is such a show woman, such a performer, you can see there, she is -- the crowd is eating her up. and flash bulbs and her voice quality had changed so much. her voice was much lower and wasn't the booming voice that she had in the '80s and '90s. >> clayton: much more on the story that's morning unfolds, keep it here at fox news channel for the latest on the police investigation. meanwhile, let's turn our attention to politics. because there was big political news last night, if you were keeping track the week-long caucuses came to an end in maine, at least in part, there are system a few cities tabulating votes and enough, so they can come out and announce a winner. a lot of people thought ron paul would walk away with this and it turns out mitt romney came in at tops, in the maine caucuses. >> dave: look at the numbers, folks, a very narrow margin, as clayton mentioned, there are still numbers, system out there and we're talking about a margin of 194 votes. most of thou, though, we are not sitting talking about bad news, for mitt romney. this is not a tremendously influential state, but good news, good momentum, he also winning the cpac straw poll and that is one he was not expected to win. 38% to 31%, for rick santorum, amazing, i think the strangest thing i heard yesterday was dissecting all of the coverage, some said, well, if newt gingrich gets out of this thing, boy, mitt romney could have trouble with rick santorum. what a difference a week makes, right? we talked about santorum getting out a week ago. >> alisyn: right. >> dave: clearly, no one is getting out of this and the talk is too early. none of these four are getting out. >> alisyn: the cpac results are interesting, because mitt romney really tried to prove his conservative credentials there, and we told you yesterday, he said the word conservative, some form of it, 29 separate times, so it was a bit of a surprise that he won the straw poll, there, and -- ann coulter said he was going over really well with the crowd and got a rousing response and we heard other reports previously. >> clayton: governor huckabee said he needed to cut back on the talk, trying to prove his conservative credentials and yesterday he said similar things and sarah palin, at cpac, really riled up the crowd. i guess, they blew the roof off the dumpster? i don't know if the place was a dump. i don't want to speak out of turn, listen to her comments. >> we aren't red americans, we are not blue americans, we are red, why and blue, and president obama, we are through with you. from parts of texas up in through maine and that is all thanks to an arctic front that pushed through yesterday, leaving behind snow across parts of ohio and north carolina and here in new york, new york city, we didn't see accumulation but the temperatures are chilly. right now, 24°, and, the other problem is when you factor in the wind it feels colder, windchills will be in the single to teens across parts of the northeast and will be gusting over 20 miles per hour, today. something to keep in mind, otherwise, we have a new storm system we're tracking, exiting the four corners now and it will be producing some snow across parts of texas and oklahoma. so, you have the cold air in place and you'll get the moisture and that will produce some snow, now, as far as high temperatures, in the northeast, we expect them to climb en to the low 30s, for new york city an 33 philadelphia and 25 buffalo and a little bit of lake-effect snow will continue and some of the localized bands could produce up to a foot of snow, especially off lake ontario, and that is just outside of syracuse, to the west of it. drive carefully, otherwise, southeast a lot of sunshine, but, it's not going to be >> dave: we are doing good. digital books, and i've downloaded "the cherry tree" app onto my ipad and am ready to show them to the kids, tell us first, what you did not like about some of the books you were seeing, available for kids. >> it wasn't what i didn't like. it was what i didn't find. there is not a lot of books teaching about our country, and kind of our history, and, in a fun, child-like way. when i was growing up the first time i heard about our constitution was watching saturday cartoons and i learned about a bill getting through congress, watching school house rock and i felt those things were not out there and if parents want to teach their kids about our country and the ways they were raised, we wanted to provide them a tool they could use to do that. >> clayton: being involved, with the adam sandler movies and the entertainment industry so long, we saw apple's big education announcement a few weeks ago on digital textbooks, trying to get kids to be engaged with this kind of material. how important is that? >> alisyn: we're doing well, you were on your regular route and driving the six kids home on the bus on wednesday, and what did you start to notice happening? >> as i was proceeding on the route to take the kids home, i kind of like had a burning smell, and i stopped the bus and tried to investigate the smell because i know i shouldn't be smelling it. and, basically, just trying to see where the smell was coming from and started to see smoke coming from the steering column of the bus. >> alisyn: oh, boy and when you start to see the smoke from the steering column you realized it was time to get the kids off. how did you evacuate the kids so well? >> upon seeing the smoke, i did ask the kids to go to the very rear of the bus and i basically made sure that the because was parked and secured and i basically told the kids, i think it was time for us to make the big exit out the back. >> alisyn: well you were correct about that, because you got the kids all safely out the back of the bus and then went down the block, you got the kids secured on the sidewalk and turned around and what did you see? >> i saw a big cloud of black smoke, filling up the bus and then, later i saw the bus burst into flames. >> alisyn: have you not gotten the kids out when you did, it would have been the scene and you look at the video of the bus engulfed in flames, what do you think? >> i'm just very grateful for the basic training we have to go through, to have the knowledge to make the decision to do the job we do. and, the kids were safe and myself were safe. >> alisyn: we know those kids' parents and those kids are grateful you paid attention to the safety training an executed it so well. thanks so much for coming in, and sharing your story, we were just stunned when we saw the video. and heard the story behind it. lindora richardson, thanks for coming in today. >> thank you. >> alisyn: more fox and friends in just two minutes.
