>> right. >> who provides the exile for him. >> dave: and back at home. politics and g.o.p. race for 2012. john huntsman, yes, the guy lagging at the bottom of the polls is the former ambassador to china and governor of of utah, trying to get in the game here, trying to get some attention and it's clear at this point his last hail mary, starting to criticize his opponents. >> and on twitter all week, publicly sort of attacking rick perry, michele bachmann and others, this week appearing on sunday morning talk show, this week today. and he really takes his opponents to task. here is one quote from that show. he says, well, i wouldn't necessarily trust any of my opponents right now. who are on the recent debate stage with me. when every single one would have allowed this country to default. so, i have to say there's zero leadership on display in terms of my opponents. now, he's referring to that vote. remember the question asked during the the fox debate. if given a 10-1 advantage, that is $1 of spending for $10 of cut. who here would support that? no one on the stage raised their hand, including him. he didn't raise his hand. so, no one would have supported that measure. he should have spoken up a little bit if he felt so, so passionate about that, but he also went after a guy who wasn't there at the debate. rick perry and here is what he had to say with regard to perry's global warming stance. when we take positions that basically runs counter to what 98 of 100 climate scientists have said. what the national academy of science has said. i think we find ourselves on the wrong side of science and therefore in a losing position. >> when talking about global warming and climate change, it's hard to imagine him getting any traction there. i don't know if that's what the voters are concerned at all about. >> i think, that may be last on the list. >> you mention the tweet though and he tweeted yesterday, $2 gas, treason, bus tours, it's time to get serious, so, in that tweet he's taking on michelle bockmann if she can lower taxes $2 a gallon and treason comment from rick perry and john huntsman going after everyone and he's taken on mitt romney in the past regarding job creation, will it work? >> yes, i don't get out of the house for an afternoon and i think it's weird. i want to know her impressions of like the world. >> juliet: well, call us, sister. >> clayton: she might not have physically seen an automobile, if you think about it. >> juliet: been there since 1927. >> a great story. a lot going on this morning, as you're waking up. it's warm across the south once again and we have a tropical storm to talk about and could have big many pacts for us. and as you're paking up. 87 in dallas, there you go, that story not changing at all. a lot of rain moving toward the eastern part of the country and see where that line of storms is and stretching out from memphis all the way up towards buffalo and towards rochester as well and anywhere to the east of that as the day moves on and showers and thunderstorms across the airport and some of the storms are going to be severe and we could be dealing with flooding like we have a seen the has couple of days and maybe some damage from wind. texas look at that. all of the moisture never makes its way into texas unfortunate and showers in and across new mexico and parts of oklahoma, good news today. here is your high temps and the heat in dallas. and kansas city, nice up around parts of the great lakes and we have tropical storm harvey yesterday and made landfall in belize. and now you see the other big storm around the lesser antilles and that's how tropical storm irene and it's going to have very big impacts for the u.s. as we move forward. take a look at this. five days out, friday, the center of this storm and this all holds together has a hurricane right around miami by friday, it could go either side of that and have an impact either in the gulf or the eastern part of the u.s. and lots to watch on this one. we'll talk about it all morning long, dave. >> yikes, thank you, rick. the road to 2012, already taking some twists and turns, but what will happen in the g.o.p. field if two more hats are thrown into the ring. will sarah palin and paul ryan shake things up? joining us for a fair and balanced debate. republican strategist ford o'connell and author "the end of anger, a new generation's take on race and rage", elliss, let me start with you, sarah palin the name we've heard about for months and months and months and more speculation after the iowa trip and speaking labor day weekend at a tea party rally. will she run? and whose position does it change the most if she does. >> it's not clear to me whether she's going to run or not and she will certainly be an exciting addition if she does. the fact of the matter she's yesterday's news and stylistically competes most with michele bachmann, she has a, you know, she has a tendency to say things that don't make a whole lot of sense upon examination and needs to be explained a lot. certainly popular with her republican base, but certainly the republican base, see the poll not too long ago and roughly half of the people say they want her to run and roughly half don't want her to run and she has real problems. >> any issues, yesterday's news, if she runs, weigh in whether you think she will or not. who does it help? who does it hurt? >> of course, i do think she is he' going to run. >> dave: of course, why, why? >> i thought for a very long time. >> i've had the sense the last year that she's going to run. our country is in a position where americans are completely and utterly fed up with government. we have a 13% congressional approval rating. sarah palin has a unique style, and a unique talent to foster cooperation, and i don't think anybody else in the g.o.p. field does. but that's fed up with government thing is already owned by rick perry who even talked about succession at one point and michele bachmann-- >> rick perry is not a solution and americans now are looking for solutions. there's two people i think that can deliver a solution, one is sarah palin because i think if she comes into the office, she's a different type of leader than anybody else in the g.o.p. field. based on what she did as governor, where she was able to explain to the people of her state what was needed, which is clearly something our leaders are not doing and then she was able to get both sides to work together. there's nobody else in the g.o.p. field that's been able to do that. >> and ford has background knowledge on this having worked on the mccain-palin ticket and you've seen her and how she works. will she run? does she have a chance? and one high profile governor said to me he thinks it sl solidifies if she gets in. >> she's a tireless campaigner and can do well in iowa. i think the entrance in the field could hurt perry and bachman and that said, i think she also helps mitt romney. any indication whether or not she's going to let her new video, iowa passion, and again with, sarah, you never know. >> dave: can she put together a national organization? does she need it? >> i think she does need a national organization, she's a tea party favorite, but has to get beyond fiscal and social conservatives and she has to hit independents and establishment republicans, for her that could be very hard unless she fine tunes her message. she is he' a tireless campaigner and smart and has to work on that. >> it's a threat. >> it's going to be a pitfall type of election and the american people have had it and they're looking for a total change and from the top to the bottom. this is a different type of leader the at a time when our country is looking for a different type of leader and i think that she uniquely, as well, among the g.o.p. field can be socially, actually libertarian, if you look at her governing record so i think that will appeal to people, who are independent. will appeal to people who voted for hillary clinton and are still disenfranchised with the democratic party and palin can bring those people in uniquely. >> and when the democrats start trumping up candidates, fyi, this worries me. >> dave: let's go-- >> and i'm not sure anybody can hear the solution outside of the debate. an interesting question. >> dave: let's move to the job that they all want. the president after labor day will unveil the new plan with a speech. don't know everything in it and infrastructure bank and propose ways to stimulate, to incentivize hiring, but how does the president, elliss, come out and say, we need to shrink the deficit long-term, but we need to spend in the short-term. how is he going to accomplish that and get this economy moving again? >> i think it's really the argument to make intellectually. basically every respectable economist is it making that already and it's a very interesting and-- >> well, politically can he accomplish that? >> it's dead on arrival, but i think he has to make his case. i think he has to make his case and i think the problem, even with the-- with the debt ceiling debate, was that he was very shy about making his case and people are waiting for na obama. >> dave: you're looking for more back bohn regarding his plan. >> and generally taking on what has been an obstructionist-- he has spoken to it, and inspect spoken to it more clearly this week and doing his barn storming campaign. >> well aring, considering that, considering the divisive environment. does he have a chance at any additional spending through? please. only kidding (laughter) >> all right. why, what's he saying. >> you would know the answer if he's excited about football. >> gotcha. >> thank you, rick. >> juliet: i only follow you, rick. >> take a look at the weather maps, a lot is going on for us, here we go. first of all, we've got some severe weather threat, rather remember the storms with the four you fatalities in pittsburgh and covering power outages and we could look anywhere we he see the yellow. that's where the threat is. could see a tornado or two out of this across eastern pennsylvania and upstate new york, so, everybody certainly very cognizant of this. and take a look forward and the temps, heat continues to be it across oklahoma and texas and by tomorrow, you're noticing the healed builds, one more map there and the heat builds into the mid 90's, and phoenix back up to 110. the heat is a big story, but potentially, first really big story for us, hurricane-wise of the season and that's what's now tropical storm irene, it's right across parts of the lesser antilles, and take a look what the tropical models are doing. first of all, we're going to be seeing this in puerto rico and dealing with this across hispanola. and one more map for us there and see what the models do. a lot of land mass and when it does that, it doesn't strengthen as much and depending exactly on how much it's over land versus water and big implications that all of those models bring in very close to florida and some of them pointing to the gulf and of course we know that has implications for areas farther off to the west and if a majority of the models trying to verify we are going to be talking about a storm in the area and potential had i could be hurricanes, none of them, a record, never seen that happen. and it's thursday into friday and we continue to watch this. if you live in florida, pay attention to this. all right, back to you inside. >> all right, rick, one of those and look at the map. for florida, it's like a bullet path to florida, all of them. >> yep, you said it. >> a couple of outlighters, it means it could switch into another direction. >> all right, thanks, rick. >> you bet. >> well, talking about getting away, a lot of people going on vacation to get to the beach. heading off and relaxing and maybe going up to the lake or something like that. now, there's a new, there's he a new trend that's happening. and i've heard of this among kids, right? >> no, it really wasn't surprising, it conforms anecdotally what we've heard from the tea party. michele bachmann has support and rick perry has support and something of a pretty strong faultline in the tea party movement when it concerns rick perry and people need to love him or hate him. >> juliet: he still came out with 28%, that's pretty decent. >> oh, a very good showing for him and we've done a straw poll back in june, bachman had actually slipped little bit and she had 43% back then and perry, unannounced back then, only had 15%, so, clearly, he's taken a little support away from her. >> juliet: i want your thoughts on comments that dick armey made recently and basically the tea party is, it's not a lock at this point for any of these candidates, do you agree with that? >> it is not a lock. it's clear that the tea party is showing some preference for michele bachmann, she had supported the tea party movement since she's been up there, since this movement began. and again, rick perry gets a lot of support and what's interesting is the establishment candidates get virtually none. mitt romney got 3% on the recent poll and 2% on a previous poll and we are he' currently running a poll right now, is a that says based on the results as of this morning, a third of our people say they would not vote for mitt romney in a general election. >> juliet: that's what i was going to ask you. who would they then vote for. what would they do? they would not show up to the polls and the tea partiers are active and passionate. >> absolutely. well, part of it, we are he' 14 months out from the election, so, it's easy for somebody to stand up and say, today, hey, i'm not going to go to the poll and support that guy if he's the nominee. when it comes up to election day, at that decision becomes much harder and some of those people will simply stay home if romney is the nominee, some will stay home, a repeat of 2008. some might look for a third party candidate and some would belly up to the buzz saw, romney is terrible, but better than obama. >> juliet: and another quick comment on dick armey's comment. and sarah palin jumps into the race the palin effect, it shakes things up. your response to that. >> i don't think she shakes things up that much. >> juliet: for the tea party? >> we are concerned about the growing instability in sinai. and the bed owen population, close to 400,000 bedouins have been blowing up major gas pipelines through egypt and we get 40% of natural gas through that. and blown in the last months and we've seen increasing infiltrations into sinai and a massive amount of smuggling of arms, from sinai into gaza and we're seeing some of the results of that smuggling now as these rockets continue to rain down on our civilian population. >> clayton: also, let's talk about the continuing violence in syria this morning, and this week of course, the u.s. secretary of state, hillary clinton calling for assad to step down, take a listen. >> the transition to democracy in syria has begun, and it's time for assad to get out of the way. and as president obama said this morning, no outside power can or should impose on this transition. >> now, that that has been said, there appears, the blowback of course from the syrian regime, he's he not going anywhere, what should the u.s. do? >> well, we are he' not going to dictate to the united states. we've long said that assad should go and he's one of the architects or the pillars of the strategic relationship between iran and syria and involved in murders in lebanon. he he supports hezbollah and 50,000 rockets and hezbollah the terrorist organization and 10,000 to hamas and we certainly do not prefer the devil we know to anybody we don't know. we think that his departure will be a great improvement to the entire region and that's very much a contrast to egypt. we are closely in contact with the egyptian transitional government and we're working, we're in close communication and closely coordinating and hope to have good relationships with egypt in the future. >> do you think that president obama has been forceful enough? he's been criticized here in the united states for taking a lesser tact than we perhaps took in libya and other countries in not speaking out, unfortunately, on assad and the departure is there in and now we see this from secretary of state hillary clinton. what's your take? >> well, i'm not going to second guess the president's decision making. it will lead to a complex and tough neighborhood as you know, clayton, my guess is that president obama wanted to work together with the u.s. allies, and calling in for assad's departure and we hope that that call will be heeded by mr. assad and we can look for more peaceful and democratic middle east in the future. >> and finely get you out of here on this, as we go, where does he lead? 'cause we might be having our first hurricane of the season, at least the tropical storm and tropical storm irene out here across the lesser antilles and it's going to continue to pull off to the west, northwest and puerto rico, and parts of the dominican republic has a hurricane warning in effect and this is the official track. and the center verifies, miami friday morning, with a hurricane on your doorstep and could go to the right, and the peninsula has differences could be an east coast storm could be a gulf storm. at this point, right now, best guess, center of it across parts of south florida on friday. somebody is getting it, a matter who gets it and how strong it is. >> thanks, rick. >> let's turn our attention now to 2012 and a tough question. if you're the moderate republican candidate in this very divisive time, if you're the one who use today work for the obama administration, how do you you gain traction in this field, with michele bachmann and rick perry and mitt romney. how does john huntsman make nose running up to 2012. >> you jump upon twitter because no one is putting you in the headlines lately and that's exactly what happened. john huntsman taking to twitter the first time and people were noticing it before the first time he's seen the twitter account and pushing out different links to his appearance, and different speeches he was giving and might be be occasional tweet about his daughter, that sort of thing. this week, like he was taking a twitter and making things more rambunctious. and also on this week this morning. he tweeted about the debt ceiling and this is what he writes. i wouldn't necessarily trust any of my opponents and on the debate stage with me. remember in? he writes when every single one would have allowed it country to default and zero d displ display-- zero leadership on display in terms my opponents. >> didn't he raise his hand. it's like a photographic memory. >> clayton: let's take a look at this, this was the the debate. >> and had a real spending cuts deal, 10-1, spending cuts to tax increases, but who on this stage would walk away from that deal? you raise your hand if you feel so strongly about not raising taxes you had he' walk away on the 10-1 deal? the worst criminals that many law enforcement are concerned it will make their jobs a lot more complicated and some are calling it, a quote, law enforcement nightmare. >> dave: cab county sheriff let's talk about border safety. like california and texas, arizona not to mention states like yours, in the state of georgia. >> that's terrible. all of these gives the word out to foreign born individuals and citizens of the united states that the obama administration and the homeland security secretary of state does not want to enforce the rule of law. it's a situation where it's been going on for years. we've got a great partnership with ice, who are some of the most dedicated law enforcement officers on the border. and here that he we partnership with and i think again, it's just an example of obama administration and the folks in washington not doing what they're supposed to be doing. >> well, you know, a lot of folks say that the president's sending out mixed messages, you mentioned, for example, ice and the border agents and local police officials who are trying to, you know, who are trying to execute these federal regulations. and jan brewer has a quote on this, the department of homeland security plan and she says this plan announced back door amnesty for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of illegal aliens. ill he will legal aliens. we need to remind president obama that we he elected a president that served beneath the law and did not appoint a king that is above the law. so essentially, specifically with your area there, calb county. you may not only see illegal immigrants out of jail, but getting out of jail with work visas. >> again, it's amnesty. you call it what it is, what you want. but it's a-- in my opinion, it's just an example of congress, they're responsible for creating, passing laws and i think this is something the obama administration and the homeland security director, who was a former governor of arizona and the region, saying in israel all it takes is a rocket to hit a school and we are at war. and that's exactly what happened today. we're on the top of a gymnasium and see the damage from the rocket and head along as you walk down here, the rocket went through the roof and down into a restroom and you can imagine how many casualty if they had a pe session or something like that going on. thankfully today. no school and summer break in israel, but the people were not as lucky last night. the warning sirens went off just as people in this neighborhood were breaking the sabbath, and where the missile came in. the car parked and destroyed and see what it did to the side of that house there. these truly are weapons of terror and they're destruction and killing and random as instantous and not only do they have razor sharp strap nell. inside they've taken the technology they're used and they're packing the missiles with ball bearings. the man who died in this attack was standing where i am and witnesses say he was actually lifted off the ground by the force of the explosion and doing what he's supposed to do and take cover right behind this wall. and you can see what the schrapnel did to this wall and incredible amount of damage and one ball bearing imbedded itself and another pulverized that right there. and that's exactly what happened to the man that was killed. >> and next to him and i decided, it was another guy that was quite obviously conscious and i sort of had to make a decision. >> the people who were in the house were able to take cover. had they been in their kitchen you can see what would have happened to them. the gijrator torn apart by the shrapnel as they headed up the stairs would have been cut down by the same schrapnel coming in. this started with a militant attack, and eight israelis dead and others injured and since then, a trading of rocket fire from gaza and the israeli forces hitting targets inside of gaza. right now though, it seems the israelis are showing a lot of restraint and the school starts days from now and do not want to start a war and leaving it up to hamas inside gaza, whether they want to continue launching the missiles t-shirt with a derrogatory comment about the 49ers. the other victim expected to survive, police have one suspect in custody. and san francisco fans said they've been dealing with a slew of violence this year as you know. back in april. giants fan, ryan stowe was nearly beaten to death by fans outside dodger stadium. people relax, this is sports and you are ruining it out there in california. >> and terrifying moments at a soccer match in mexico. that's gunfire, players and referees ran for their lives as you can see, after a gun battle erupted outside the stadium in mexico. and fans ducked for cover on the scene and others the gunfire. the gun battle was between police and a suspected drug cartel members and at least one police officer was hurt. >> dave: back to work, verizon employees ending the strike, back in office tuesday and a new you contract was finalized and a decision to bring tension to make works contribute to their health premiums, both sides are reportedly close to a progressive and the great outdoors. we make a great pair. right, totally. uh... that's what i was thinking. hmm. covering the things that make the outdoors great. now that's progressive. call or click today. >> women back to "fox & friends." a well, new environmental protection agency regulations, mainly to coal plants shutting down across the country in an effort to curb pollution, should we be implementing job killing measures right now in this tough economy. >> joining us is project 21 fellow and fox news contributor, janine. >> good morning. explain a little about what's happening. >> well, this is an outrageous obama energy policy. you remember when he was campaigning in 2008. under my cap and trade plan, electricity rates are necessarily skyrocket and didn't get cap and trade and now he's going through the environmental protection agency. which is unleashing a slew of regulations on the whole industry, which will result in job losses. and the last thing we need to do in this economy. >> the congressional research service which has conducted research on all of this, says this about these facilities, they say many of the plants are insufficient and are being replaced by more efficient combined gas plants, a development likely to be encouraged if the price of competing fuel natural gas continues to be low regardless of epa rules. they're saying these things are old, a health hazard anyway and they're going to close. >> here is the thing, we need to focus on health and keep in mind the last 30 years there have been significant changes where our emissions have gone down or our air emissions have gone down approximately 60%. which is a substantial effort on our part, so, it's not like we're not focused on health. but we're looking at the closure of these facilities, and you have companies already that are making announcements that they're even going to close or they are he' going to scale back, american electric power and they're closing five facilities and closing back on six and duke energy. >> one of the concerns was my gosh, we're going to have blackouts because of this. >> absolutely. listen, texas is concerned about blackouts. you see how hat it was there this past summer and concerned about blackouts and brownouts. so they are he' looking at something like 81 giga watts to come off line because of the regulations and that's 8% of our electricity. coal provides 46% of our electricity. that's huge. >> and critics say that look, the epa reports here, the air transport rule that they would actually pre 21,000 cases of bronchitis as a result of shutting down the power plants and save 36,000 lives and say that the the epa would estimate 290 billion dollars in health benefits compared to 2.8 billion a year in costs by 2014. they say the health benefits, excuse me, outweigh the down side. >> here is the thing, there are five new regulations and they call it the train wreck, epa train wreck regulations and these regulations are going to put people out of jobs, they're going to increase our energy costs, as i said before, we need to be focused on health and not looking at the economic consequences of what the regulations are going to cause, which is substantial, we have jobs moving overseas in china already, unemployment is through the roof and we can't be putting these regulations in place when you're not looking at the other side of the equation, and they're not doing that. >> thank you very much for joining us. >> thank for coming in, the rest of your weekend. >> and coming up on the show, a hail mary, sounding a lot like a democrat. o discredit republicans. >> aeteran pilot makes a tragic mistake, chaos after an air stunt show goes horribly wrong. >> welcome back. military vets in texas are trading in their armor for arithmetic. that's because a new program is giving service members college credit for skills they mastered in the military. adrian vasquez was enrolled at tech college. john hunt deputy chancellor of distance learning operations at the ctc. good morning to he both of you. >> good morning. >> this program seems long overdue. i'm surprised that texas is the only one thus far to get on board, but john, give us the basics how it works for our military servicemen? >> sure, the texas college credit for heroes program seeks to maximize the awarding of college credit by institutions of higher education to service members and veterans for the training and experience they received in the military. many military friendly institutions have been awarding credit to veterans and service members for decades, however, this program seeks to standardize the evaluation process in texas. >> all right. adrian, this is, i know it's a champion, a program that governor perry championed for you, and for servicemen like yourself. tell us how it helps you. >> well, it helps with giving credit that i wouldn't, i wouldn't normally have, just coming straight into college. . >> dave: how frustrating can it be for servicemen, you're going through such serious training and then, to not have that translate to college credit. how frustrating is that for fellow servicemen? >> not too sure, sir. >> dave: all right. john, let me ask you, why haven't other states taken the same steps that texas has? >> i believe, first, because central texas and texas in general has such a huge military population, perhaps not as high profile a program. texas is home to a 1.8 million veterans and of course, many, many tens of thousands of active duty service members and so, it's more high profile in texas than perhaps it would be in other states with smaller populations of veterans and military service members. >> yeah, and a serious problem facing this country is the difficulty that veterans are facing with coming back from say, iraq and afghanistan and now, unemployment rate of 12%, far higher than the national average. adrian, why is it so difficult in your opinion for returning troops to find jobs? >> because the training that they have for overseas, going over to iraq or afghanistan, i mean, really doesn't relate to saving lives. it's not every day you're going to be running around towns in the u.s. with a rifle. >> dave: and again, this is college credit for heroes, john, do we see this going national? >> i think we had he' like to see it going national, but it's an issue that initially will be collaboration of seven institutions across texas and each institution has a different role to play. the program focuses initially on the allied health program, however, service members and veterans that have training in any job specialty can have their credit evaluated, their training evaluated for college credit. >> dave: texas home to 1.8 million vets, served in iraq and afghanistan and hopefully college credit for heroes will help. thank you for joining us this morning. adrian, thanks for your service. >> thank you. >> dave: coming up, can we add sarah palin and paul ryan to the presidential ticket? trying to get traction? don't you think he's just trying to sort of a-- >> sorry, i think. >> juliet: both do it. >> clayton: i was going to say he had on his twitter page, had been doing sort of boring things, linking to speeches he'd been giving or throwing up photos of his family. wasn't getting a lot of traction. finally tweets something interesting or controversial and suddenly, all the news reports were about huntsman's twitter page and all of these followers started following over to see, what is huntsman seeing on twitter and suddenly being more and more outspoken on twitter and there was a lot of traction there. . >> dave: in the beginning he tried to focus on the jobs record and impressive. did well creating jobs as governor of utah. it didn't work and seemed like that didn't get a lot of traction, let's try something else. >> juliet: here is one of the things he was talking about. he is he' covered a slew of subjects, rick perry being one of them, but he also talks essentially about the debt ceiling and referred back to the debate. this is what he wrote. well, i wouldn't necessarily trust any of my opponents right now who are on the recent stage with me, when every single one would have allowed the country to default so i have to say there was zero leadership on display in terms of my opponents. remember what he's talking about? let's look. >> had a real spending cuts deal, 10-1 as byron says, 10-1, who on the this stage would walk away from that deal. raise your hand if you feel so strongly about not raising taxes you'd walk away on the 10-1 deal? every hand is raised there. so, it's an odd statement to come out on that and he also has been taking on governor rick perry on global warming, which is one of the issues right now, not really on the top of everyone's radar this election season. take a look at what he said. he said when we take a position at that basically runs counter to what 98 of 100 climate scientists have said, the national economy of science has said what's causing climate change and man's contribution to it, i think we should find ourselves on the wrong side of science and therefore in a losing position. >> so we are he' talking about global warming, why? >> and the voters are concerned about are jobs and getting a job and getting na unemployment rate and just to finish up the talk on the debt talk, when he was criticizing the leadership he was saying he did not want to default. he was saying his opponents were willing to default. and that's where he says, he separates himself. and he's taking on michele bachmann over assertions that he could bring gas down to $2 a gallon and criticized rick perry and talking about the treasonist comments and trying to distance himself in that. >> clayton: and meanwhile, governor rick perry taking on huntsman now over global warming, take a listen. >> john is going to make his own decisions and i just happen to believe that, you know, the earth's temperature has been moving up and down for millenniums now and there are of enough scientists out there, that are skeptical about the region for it. and i happen to be one of those that are skeptical, that for us to spend billions of dollars on a theory that is not proven and that you have skeptical science against that, is not in america's best intere interest. >> juliet: and he's-- >> speed bumps on the long road to nomination. >> juliet: he headed back to texas he was in south carolina, with david wilkins, former ambassador to canada, and a huge fundraiser for george w. bush when convicted of espionage in iran. and shane bauer and josh fattel were sentenced to eight years in prison after crossing into iran in 2009 and said they mistakenly crossed into the territory and iranian officials also say the case against the third hiker, sarah shourd, remains open, interestingly. she was on bail for medical reasons last september. and she is back in the united states guessing that she's probably the not going to be headed back there. and the kansas city air show back open this morning after a horrifying accident that left a stunt pilot dead. we are h going to warn you. video is dollars that chinese investors placed into america's struggling economy are safe. >> so the chinese people should take solace, in order for us not to make good on china's debt, we would have to headed across the east and scared with storms that moved across the northeast and a repeat today. some of them severe, and big storms this morning across kentucky and tennessee and see that spreading across parts of the ohio valley as the day heats up and the front pulls to the east and see the severe storms fire especially across the northeast. and texas needs the rain and you can kind of see the general emotion. and there's high pressure there and everything goes around that and we've the got the moisture across the four corners, especially into new mexico, nothing penetrating into texas and it's going to be hot again today there. 105 in dallas, 107 in arizona, in phoenix, that is, the temps are going to warm up actually a little bit over the next few days and tropics getting active and tropical storm harvey that made landfall in belize and irene across the lesser antilles and this one potentially the first big impact and be the next four or five days and this is the models and see them consistently around the florida area and a lot of interaction with land. they keep them weaker and depends over hispanola and cuba that can weak and bit and the track that brings it dangerously close to florida and the official track, a category one hurricane in miami and friday morning. if you're in that area the panhandle of florida, need to be watching this closely and move forward this text and there was posting a picture accompanied the post and removed by facebook and she says this about it. she says after i posted the following statement and photo yesterday, facebook sensored the photo and it violated the facebook community standards and before it was removed it received over 10,000 likes and comments. regardless i'm reposting the photo and statement and many of you will agree with me. the amnesty plan followed the rule of law and the u.s. constitution now. >> i think she jumped the gun there, a little on when she said the photo apparently violated the facebook community standards. because, facebook, facebook issued an apology, they manager of public communications. it was removed in error, we apologize for any inconvenience. clayton being the nerd, the tech here. flagged a certain way, and therefore, automatically gets pulled down. and very often though that we find that this sort of stuff happens to sort of anti-obama things and end up popping up on facebook. it seems like there's a, a tendency for more conservative-based things like this to be yanked down off of these sites as a result of other people. >> dave: what the pattern, is this technology, the political idling in play. so it's a fair question to ask. of course, taking it down generated ten times the publicity that it did in the fairs place and we'd have to check now and the likes on that thing has tripled or quadrupled or more. >> juliet: and now the situation when the websites are hijacked and i'm not suggesting that's the case here, when they're hijacked at times and there's an automatic response at that goes in about the organizer of that website and they take it off temporarily and look at the situation and put it back on. >> see if it violates some sort of thing and they make that decision by the end of next week, he had a phone call with new jersey governor chris christie and according to this reporting, there is a pact that essentially one of the two of them must run, to talk about the big issues of entitlement reform in the way to steer the country forward. that said, there's this video out from governor palin and she's put out a video and most people are saying it looks more and more like she's going to be a candidate. so, the field might not be set. >> and anytime, bret, you roll out a video that has a grizzly bear in it it's going to raise eyebrows, are we in the dog days of summer now? we've got candidates and debates right now, and global warming, there's the grizzly bear. are we awaiting what president obama is going to say, he's on vacation right now and congress out of session right now. are we awaiting what's going to happen on jobs until after the labor day break? >> yeah, there are a lot of critics on the president, obviously, saying, why did this take until after the vacation to get the plan? >> you know, put it down on the piece of paper and show it to us, that's what the word is here in washington. and the folks who are critical of the president. and, yes, congress is out. but, this economy is in the dire situation. if you talk to economists on both ideological spectrums and something has to be done quickly, we'll wait and see what the president's plan is. we've heard some leaks about it. and so far there aren't real blockbusters in there from what we've heard so far. >> i haven't had a chance to talk with you for a while, actually. >> i know, you did a great job debate and wonderful job, we go way back. and you're going to have karl rove, right. >> karl rove and bill burke and senator rick santorum today chance to live and it was your mom at that pushed you. gave you tough love. tell what yous she did for you. >> there was a moment after a doctor's appointment and i wish you'd let me die rather than survive this, waist getting more and more depressed. and i remember her reaching across the table and put her foot down, enough is enough. this happens to a lot of people and you should to pick up the pieces and make your life the best you can. >> juliet: is it still a struggle every day mentally? >> at times, i mean, my daily routines aren't normal and i can't-- >> in what way? >> well, my digestive system was completely compromised. getting up early and getting my bodily function moving like everyone else does is different not to mention the pain and stiffness and routine and endure before i can get up and going. >> dave: we see the scars, but tell us what you endured in the hospital. how you long were you there? what types of surgery did you have to undergo. >> i spent five months at new york presbyterian and had 42 different surgeries in a 16 month period. >> dave: 42 surgeries. >> i lot 55 pounds. >> dave: you were ready to give up. >> i had given up until that moment with my mom and things started to turn around and took my attitude from what i normally thought i had he' be able to do in life to hey, i'm doing the best i can. >> juliet: you ran the new york city marathon. i mean, tell us what that was happening there. were you feeling you could actually do that or what did i get myself into? >> they gave me a three hour head start, okay, so talk about athletes have to do two things, prepare themselves physically and mentally. so they gave me a three and a half hour head start and i started with the achilles track club before the 40,000 runners came by, i was passed by 39,000 people, but mentally challenging, unbelievable. >> dave: you'll be back and riding a bicycle. >> you've been named one of the 25 fittest men by men's fitness magazine. what is the take away from people at home. physical and mental and s setbacks and the message? >> the human spirit is unbelievable, powerful. underutilized tool and if you're one of the people saying i can never run a marathon. guess what you're never going to do. you have to start saying you will and check the results and you'll get some things accomplished. >> juliet: the book is called the long run. >> reporter: clayton, 100 attacks to avenge the death of one usama bin laden, what al-qaeda in mesopotamia are in the midst of they said. they posted online the enenemies of god should know we do not forget and pure blood will not go in vain. an exact start date for the attacks, they say they're underway and kick things off in the middle of the month and presume that 40 attacks in one day in iraq, that killed 90 people was part of this coordinated effort and those dozens of attacks on monday by the way made that the deadliest day in iraq thus far in year. now, al-qaeda in mesopotamia has been around for years, iraqi sunnis as well as foreign militants and reportedly said in the statements. revng for usama bin laden and other senior leaders and not not going to stop seeking revenge, so it's tied directly to the may raid where navy seals of got usama bin laden. >> and let's take a look at other headlines, a fox news alert. rebels closing in on muammar gaddafi. battles are raging around the country. including tripoli. rebels claim they're now in control of parts of that city. reports say dozens of gaddafi forces have been killed and dozens more taken prisoner in overnight fighting in the capital and however, the gaddafi regime, they remain defiant. it remains defiant, rather, calling for a seas fire and as if the regime is not on the brink of collapse. take a look at this, folks, smith jersey, yeah, yeah, cheer him on. >> oh, in a separate incident, a man was beaten unconscious in the men's bathroom. this is the same place and same stadium, same game and he has life threatening injuries. and the suspect is on the list on that one. of the parking lot after they were shot, one victim has life threatening centers, wearing a t-shirt with a derrogatory comment supposedly about the 49ers, the other victim is expected to survive and they have one in custody and expected to survive. and san francisco fans have been dealing with a slew of violence this year, back in march. giants fan brian stowe was nearly beaten to death by fans outside of dodgers stadium. more than two months after her disappearance, police continue their search for a missing indiana student. the and excuse me landfill and no new evidence has turned up and vanished june third after a night out with friends and looks like jerry lewis might be hosting the muscular dystrophy. lewis fox news contributor jonathan morris joining us. >> good morning, father. >> dave: and to be clear michele bachmann and rick perry doesn't necessarily represent the tea party movement. >> no. >> dave: is there a connection between their fiscally conservative views that found that had movement and religion? >> well, this is the whole conversation that comes off as an article written in the daily beast, and said not only are these two candidates ditied in with the religious right, but in favor of something that michelle woolford said dominionism that these candidates would replace, deep roots, ties to this theology that would replace constitutional law for old testament law. >> where does she get her information. >> and this is to your point, dave, to the tea party movement, saying, really, it's a whole conspiracy of the tea party movement to try to put their christianity on the-- >> where does that come from? again, you remember how the tea party movement was founded, again, on fiscal conservativism and government. >> you cannot say-- >> it's not a religious movement. >> it still isn't. this is true, this is perhaps what they're scared of. the 2004, 2008 values voters, that we all remember so well that had a huge impact. well, those voters have very much lined up with another value that they hold, which is the fiscal conservativism. conservativis conservativism. and make a very strong vote for a certain type of government that includes social values and also, financial responsibility. >> a recent study, 47% of those said they consider themselves tea party movement folks, and also consider themselves part of the conservative christian movement. and you know, there's been a lot written about this, as though there's something wrong with that. do you feel there's some sort of indictment against the-- >> refreshing to hear candidates speak openly about their beliefs that include religion. and-- separation of church and state, separation of church and state. >> what that has to do with the government not-- not passing any law that's going to prohibit us from exercising our religion. or else, establishing one religion over another. it has nothing to do with us being able to publicly express what we believe and i would say that, if there was a mormon candidate or an atheist candidate they should be able to say publicly this is what i believe and not this ambiguous, oh, aim he not going to talk about it because of church and state. it's bogus and old and doesn't work anymore. >> you heard it here first before you head out to church. father jonathan morris, thank you. >> thank you. >> coming up, all summer long, lemonade stands across the country. >> juliet: for a serious segue. >> dave: for not having the proper license or permit. what happened when protesters took their lemonade to d.c.? no. he insists the trillions of dollars of chinese investors placed in america's struggling economy are safe. >> in order to not make good of china's debt we'd have to disappoint tens of millions of americans who own 85% of that debt. >> travel to a city damaged by china's massive earthquake in 2008, the tragedy as you recall killed nearly 90,000 people and those are your headlines. >> dave: let's check in with rick reichmuth. what did you have for breakfast. hey, ricky. >> rick: across the south, hot again, a little bit of a break-up towards oklahoma city, 98, warm and dallas, 105, 101 san antonio and 1101 as well an big storms are firing, we're seeing storms move through the d.c. area, just to the east of the d.c. area, as the day goes on these storms will become severe and we'll see wind, hail and maybe an isolated tornado or two. nothing going in texas, no rain, it all stays to the west and the north of it. unfortunately. here's the highs across the rest of the country for the day. a big story will be this week, a tropical storm potentially, hurricane force, it is irene, and we had harvey yesterday and it is getting into the active season and this is tropical storm irene across the western antilles and will continue to track towards the west, affecting puerto rico and hispaniola and haiti and keep in mind a storm like this has devastating effects in haiti and potentially by friday emerges somewhere on the eastern side of florida, or western side of florida, or maybe right smack in the middle of florida and we're talking about potentially a hurricane there. and folks in the florida area, as well as i would say, georgia, and south carolina, and maybe as far west as the panhandle of florida, need to be watching it closely as we move forward the next few days, we'll track it. >> chris: let's talk about the 2012 race, the gloves are off. the dog days of summer. what do you want to talk about. >> global warming. >> chris: what jon huntsman is doing, the former governor of utah on twitter and talk shows and such the past weak, a, taking governor rick perry on his global warming stance, look at what he had to say about this. he says we take a position that basically runs counter to what 98% of climate scientists have said, what the national academy of science has said. about what is causing climate change and man's contributions to it and i think we find ourselves on the wrong side of science and therefore in a losing position. that is what he said. >> here's what rick perry had to safe. because, of course, this was in response to comments that he had made and here's what he said to huntsman's comments, about his comments. >> chris: back and forth. >> john will make his own decisions, i happen to believe that you know, the earth's temperature has been moving up and down, for millenniums now and there are enough scientists out there, that are skeptical about the reasons for it. and, i happen to be one of those that are skeptical, that, for us to spend billions of dollars on a theory that is not proven and that you have skeptical science, against that, is not in america's best interest. >> dave: the fact is there was a time that jon huntsman maybe a year or so ago people thought he was the one who could step forward and get the republican nomination because he could get thes -- "the independent"s. >> clayton: mitt romney also believes in man made climate change and believes in evolution, some of the things that came out and jon huntsman saying the same and are they playing to the new hampshire independent voter that may actually get the votes. >> dave: jon huntsman is playing very much in the state of new hampshire and the campaign depends upon that and he's criticizing michelle bachmann, taking on the assertion, she could lower the price of gas to $2 and challenged mitt romney's jobs record. >> clayton: got it back in the headlines and there is this. over the next 18 months, we should talk about this. . the environmental protection agency is about to finalize a flurry of new rules, that would basically shut down some of these older coal plants in the country and a lot of poem say is it the right to do this, in the economic downturn? a lot of companies have to lay off a number of individuals. >> and they say there will be blackouts and all sorts of problems. your rates will be increased. the other side says, hold on, a lot of these plants will be closed down anyway. and, they will be phased out. >> dave: earlier we had a fellow with the project 21, and she was here and hers here take on what the epa regulations will do to jobs. >> this is an outrageous obama energy policy. remember when he was campaigning, in 2008, under my cap-and-trade plan, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket and he didn't get cap-and-trade and now is going through the environmental protection agency, which is unleashing a slew of regulations on the whole industry, which will result in job losses. the last thing we need to do in this economy. >> the reality is a lot of the regulations, it will take a long time to get through the system and, you know... >> clayton: no, governments moves quickly. >> what planet do you live on? >> clayton: i don't know, the utopia i have of a government working efficiently is up here somewhere en my head and they say 45% of the energy, power we rely on in the u.s. comes from these coal power plants and you would be hurting or disrupting that as you pointed out, blackouts and, the congressional national research service came out and said, the reason for all of this, they said many of these plants are insufficient and are being replaced by more efficient combined cycle natural gas plants. a development likely to be encouraged in the price of competing fuel, natural gas continues to be low, almost regardless of epa rules and the epa says, look, we'll cut down on bronchitis problems in this country and save 36,000 lives as a result of that. and, daneen says we have to be concerned about health and we have to find a healthy balance. >> you know what the health department is concerned about? lemonade. >> dave: lemonade! what does it is have to do with your freedom? >> collective sigh of... >> dave: yesterday was lemonade freedom day, if you didn't join that facebook group, that had over 5,000 members, it was a big day to protest, the recent shut downs of all of these lemonade stands, more than 9 shut down, over the last couple of months, because they didn't have the proper permit. >> clayton: because of health violations. >> more than nine? former speechwriter for president george w. bush, mark theisen joins us. good to see you on a sunday. >> good morning, how are you? >> juliett: i'm wonderful. how did he do? >> he did a great job and i got to follow him around the state of new hampshire and he's a very impressive retail politician. >> alisyn: in what way. >> the way he engages people and looks them in the eye and talks to him and i followed him around in a bunch of campaign stops and talk to people afterwards and they were very impressed with him. >> clayton: when he was in new hampshire and got yells at one of those cafes, have 'em eat cake and he was feeling -- new hampshire folks are not impressed with anyone, you know? show me your politics, prove yourself to me. how did he handle those folks. >> he handled them well and ignored the critics when the awful woman who pushed her child up there to ask, why don't you believe in -- ask why he doesn't believe in science and looked at the young boy in the eye and answered his questions respectfully and made a good impression on whoever was watching. >> clayton: there it is, the video now, answering, the kid was being used as a prop by his mom to feed questions about evolution, why he doesn't believe in certain skins and one of the big... i think it was a big speed bump along the bus tour, which was the ben bernanke comments, of course, calling him treasonus, and, punishable by death an karl rove and others who worked for former president george w. bush coming out and saying it was unpresidential and a mistake, how did he handle that. >> first of all, the issue, it was a gaffe, definitely and his team would acknowledge that. but, i think, also, the issue he raised about printing money is one that is important and, two, he turned the gaffe into an opportunity and you remember, president obama went out and engaged him and said, you have to be careful about what you say. and, he returned that and responded and said, mr. president, actions speak louder than words and my actions as governor are creating jobs and your actions are killing them. that is a win for rick perry when -- on the first week on the trail, engaging the man he'll try and take on in the fall. >> juliett: he seems to be a darling of the tea party behind michelle bachmann at least according to polls, did you get the sense while you were out there with him? >> i'll tell you, if you recall, this was supposed to be michelle bachmann's week when she came out of the iowa straw poll, no one is talking about her. he stole her thunder and talking about rick perry, rasmussen has him leading the pack nationally and he's in second place after a few days on the campaign trail on the polls and his message, of the -- saying he wants to make washington back as inconsequential in your life as possible, really, resonates with sort of live free or die republicans here in the state of new hampshire. >> clayton: you know, let's get into the george w. bush side of all of this, because it has been floated out there this week as well, the texas swagger idea has come up, and, the question of whether... is it going to be george w. bush part 2, does he need to abandon some of that texas cowboy swagger to appeal to independents after all, your former boss didn't leave office with a very high approval rating. what do you say? >> i think he has to be who he is. he's from texas, paints creek and that is who he is and shouldn't pretend to be someone he is not and i'll tell you, he got good news this week on friday, the bureau of labor statistics found texas last month created 30,000 jobs, ten straight months of job creation, and, the democratic head of the dallas federal reserve came out, and said that 50% of the -- as of last month, 50% of the new jobs since 2009 were created in texas, and they are not low-paying jobs, and they are because of the policies that rick perry put in place, that is a democratic head of the texas federal reserve and hfocuses on jobs and against his record and obama's record he'll do well. >> juliett: correct me if i'm wrong but you spent a significant amount of time watching him. give us a sense of the man, not just the campaigner but the man. >> he's very genuine and looks you straight in the eye and, shakeser hand, and he makes a very good impression and i talked to a lot of people who met minimum in thim in portsmou hampshire and they were impressed with him and i met a young democrat, who was and obama supporter and, he thinks he's sold on him. >> clayton: sarah palin may be throwing her hat into the ring, we are hearing. are they concerned, about that and the tea party votes he seems to have locked up at the moment. >> i haven't talked about sarah palin and i have a lot of respect foreher and he does and his response will be if sarah palin is in the race, he's the longest serving governor of texas and has a ten-year record creating jobs in texas and will probably point out she left office after two years, halfway into her first term. >> clayton: you can count on that. might come up. marc theisen, thanks for joining us on "fox & friends." >> thank you. >> juliett: we showed you the video this morning and we'll show you again, fistfighting in the grandstands and gun shots in the parking lot at the 49ers game. what the heck is going on there? >> he'll propose the infrastructures bank, let's spends more money to get the economy going and he knows the house of representatives will never go along with it, it is republican dominated and he can turn around and say, see i tried and wanted to get the economy going and those wicked republicans wouldn't let me do it. >> juliett: this is a strategy to blame republicans? >> i think so. >> juliett: under a ruse of... >> but does the president have an alternative to the policies which have already failed? we have already had a trillion dollars worth of stimulus in the stimulus plan and record government spending and it really hasn't worked. >> juliett: don't you think he knows -- he knows the spotlight is hard and it is bold on him right now? he knows he has to come up with the plan, or is it the same old, aim sold and not the shell game at this point, really? >> if he came up with a plan, that really changed course, that went back to private enterprise, that -- private enterprise, get us out of the mess and that would be repudiating his presidency and he'd have to say, obamacare, we'll, we'll edge back on that. financial reform, we'll edge back on that, epa regulations, we'll edge back on that. tax cuts, yeah, i'm all for that. he's not going to do that. it will be a reversal of his presidency, no way it will happen. >> dave: one thing you understand that may be different, not sure if it will work is incentivizing, hiring an offering tax breaks to companies that higher and i'm curious, what do you see ahead in the markets? [laughter]. >> clayton: i stopped myself. >> juliett: ouch. oh, that is... that is hard. >> clayton: empire state building. it always hurts. >> dave: a couple weeks of summer left, get out and get tacky tourist photos, taken, send 'em our way, i promise i'll send you guys one next weekend, i'll be off for vacation. down to the beach, ocean city, maryland. >> juliett: what is the address? >> dave: paparazzi will be there! meanwhile, "fox news alert," at least one person dead, dozens injured as palestinian militants continue a relentless mortar barrage on southern israel. >> clayton: leland vittert is live from a town that endured one of the worst attacks hours ago. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, guys, there is an old saying in israel, the only thing needed to start a war is a rocket landing at a school and that is exactly what happened, we're on the top of a gymnasium here and you can see where the rocket came in and also where the rocket ended up which was through the roof, and down there, inside this gymnasium and you can imagine how many casualties there would have been, had there been kids inside and school is not on today and this is still summer vacation here in israel and still the down endured a barrage of rockets, hundreds fired here over the past 4 or 5 days and, inside gaza, where they make these things, they pulled a page out of the suicide bombing book and put in ball bearings and the only purpose is to kill as many people as they can when the rockets land and israel has a defense system against the rockets, but, system, we had a number of casualties over the past couple of days. each missile interceptor fired by israel's iron dome costs $40,000. and the system was specifically designed to counter the short range off a home built rocket used by gaza militant against southern israel and the current kill ratio is 60%, which is good, but, far from perfect. militants fire rockets at the same time, aimed for the same targets and some get through. like last night, at a small neighborhood, broke the sabbath, the sirens went off and a man didn't make it to the shelter in time. >>... >> that's a good question. i think neither will make a huge impact, as huge as rick perry. and by the way, speaking of media vetting, there is a huge ad in an austin newspaper asking for anyone who has had sex with rick perry. can we get the ad to find, you know, obama's cocaine dearly now that he is two years into his presidency? but sarah palin and ryan, ryan, like bachman, is a fantastic candidate but he's from the house and it is irresponsible for people to keep pushing hip. we have not had a house member become president since james garfield and he has executive experience having been, i don't know, a lieutenant general in the civil war. and, sarah palin -- we'll see, she obviously has huge supporters, but, i mean, we all ahead have michelle bachmann in the race. >> juliett: are you holding out for christie? a study sponsored by the pentagon says military pensions are unaffordable and the secretary of defense considering cutting them. is that fair? joining me is fox news military analyst colonel david hunt, nice to see you this morning. what do you make of this? the current retirement plan, let me put it up on the screen for our viewers, lifetime benefits after 20 plus years of service, pension worth half of your base salary, no pension if you serve less than 20 years, begin collecting benefits immediately and it costs 55 billion in 2010. and the new plan, though, currently, turns this on its ear. what do you make of it? >> i think, if panetta the is serious and i think -- i'm hoping what he's trying to do is scare the administration and congress into not screwing around with the defense budget. but, if he is serious, i think he gets fired, and what we -- it's not just outrageous, they need to double the amount of money these guys are getting and double the pension, and, what it takes, for -- what it has taken, what it will continue to take, for our country to go to war with volunteers, the loss of life and limb and to the times... to families, we have a generation of children, growing up in the army and the marine corps and the air force, and the intelligence community without fathers and mothers, because of this ten-year war. it is outrageous to be talking about it. they don't get paid enough as it is. we have sergeants in the army and marine corps, barely above the poverty line. and, people have the audacity to talk about anything, anything put increasing a pension, or increasing a salary, is ridiculous. >> clayton: let's put up specifics and i'll get you to comments on these, these are the plans, that would be the plan as you say, if these changes do come through this pentagon. they'd get a 401(k)-style plan with government contributions and wouldn't be able to collect the retirement until the age of 60, and in those serving less than 20 years, would be eligible for benefits, estimated savings, would equal $250 billion over 20 years. and some say, critics who maybe disagree with you, say it is belt-tightening and we ned to tighten our belt. what do you say to that?
