"fox & friends" begins right now. >> it's "fox & friends". >> there is one day a year where you say i wear a snuggy to work, today would be the day. it is similar. it is cozy. it is like a bath robe. >>clayton: in nome, it is freezing, up there, they cannot get heating fuel. a writer was walking through in a full eskimo outfit. >>dave: we start with the heat of politics down there in south carolina. we are a week out from the south carolina primary and a new direction, now, for newt gingrich. he is calling on all of the inaccurate ads run by the super pac's to be taken off the air to have the false points taken out. perhaps is because he was underfire from all angles on his bain attack. >>clayton: a big problem is the super pac put up a 28 meant film about bain capital and new there have been quite a few people coming out from the film that said i was inaccurately represented and i didn't actually loss my job. and i was promoted when bain came in to our town and i was only laid off later when another company took over so i should be thanking mitt romney for actually giving me a promotion. >>alisyn: newt gingrich is asking them to take out the inaccuracies, at least four major ones and he is asking them to reed it out but not backing down from attacks or criticism from mitt romney's time at bain and wants mitt romney to explain better what he did there. >> the idea that a candidate can make a claim and yell foul the meant you ask him to prove it is just silly. if he can't stand up today and defend his claim how is he going to stand up to obama in the fall? michael to the governor is simple: the only place he worked was bain. he claims he created 100,000 jobs. release the records. show us the facts. you cannot run for president, have half your campaign be about your great achievement and hide them. >>dave: he is talking about the 100,000 jobs created claim that romney made. some say that is not true but there are just in numbers to show how many were created or killed. could it tree? it could but we don't know. as for the super pac ad on bain county, look, it was torn apart and the "washington post" gave it four pinocchios on newt gingrich's attack ads. super pac. >>clayton: have you ever heard of the holson photo albums plant in south carolina? ever heard of it? >>alisyn: i had. >>clayton: many folks in gaston, south carolina, say they have never heard of it but this is at the heart of the bain capital argument that the plant was closed as a result of bain capital taking it over. rick perry among the individuals saying that the residents are in pain because of the closing. >> you go to georgetown, south carolina, a couple of cities where bain capital did come in and destruct the companies. people lost their jobs. i will tell you there is a sensitive issue there. >>alisyn: reporters went to the town of 12,000 people and they started, reporters, asking, and what they found was as you said people don't remember this photo album company. and even if they did remember it they did not see when the plant closed and 150 people lost their job so they did not see that as making a big dent. >>clayton: so rick perry is talking to the individuals and the reports, a number of reporters could not find the individuals. >>dave: john roberts tried to find out how bad the pain was from the closing of the plant. >> i am sure it was painful for those that lost the jobs short-term and had to look for work but looking at the records of what happened 25 years ago it was not a significant economic county. >> he may have come in and tried to streamline it and if it was not feasible to keep it open plants will close. that is how capitalism works. >>clayton: so maybe the bain accusations are not carrying weight. or are they? my guest from young american organization joins us this morning with his perspective. you have created a youth misery index. that sounds positive. explain this. >>guest: well, the youths misery index puts together three variables that hurt young people who take the economy beating. youth unemployment at 17.4 percent. average graduating college at $26,000,300 and national debt each at $46,900, with a massive terrible effect on young people and all three are connected to big government policies so we are trying to do that, work with that. >>clayton: let's be specific on that. critics will say that is not president obama's facility you take out a student loan and you lean college, that is not the administration's part. what do you say? >>guest: for youth unemployment, youth unemployment in the last fur years since the government spending binge has gone up precipitously and that is because of big government because when the government spends ton the industry does not create jobs because they are unionized, seniority-based jobs and a lot of government spending it does thought work. with college debt, the government has now nationalized college debt and has been subsidizing it for years. so it is compared to fannie mae and freddie mac compared to the federal government for student loans, they have been highly subsidized and encouraging young people to get involved in the loans and leaving them out to dry when they graduate. they cannot fine jobs and they are going bankrupt. who is to blame? the easy loan policies and they are college costs going up, twice the rate of inflation, and the government has done nothing about that they give out the loans and funding colleges. national debt it is really clear. >>clayton: many colleges are private and some public what can the government do is say your rates are going up? many argue that is capitalism. >>guest: well, sure, like i said the whole government loan industry is fueling this. and there are no standards with the loans and a lot of the costs are coming because it is easy loan policies and young people can wrack the loans up. if you cannot find a job they going behalf to college. young people are giving up looking for work and going back to graduate school coming from big government spending and the obama administration poor job quality. >>clayton: we heard reports at christmas, 17 percent unemployment, very high among the youth but the white house hoping to get some of the youth vote become because of obamacare. many of the folks who are 26 and under who did not have health care before the white house is hoping because now they now have health care they may, in fact, could come to the polls for president obama. how does that measure up? >>guest: well, the obama administration support has dropped more precipitously as far as the polls go up and 30 percent after the inauguration at 77 percent and now at 48 percent youth approval so obviously the obamacare did not work out well and it will not work out well for young people because they are subsidizing the whole system for those who are not on our parents' plan. we are expected to relow on our parents? "product of the usa." >>alisyn: and hopefully it is good. where does honey come from? >>guest: a lot coming in from asia. they banned honey coming from china because they found heavy metals and antibiotics that have been used to treat disease in honey bee so we don't allow honey from china but they ship it to other countries and it is transshipped. and we get it. allegation it says number one america's choice so does that mean it comes from america? >>guest: like i said before, out of the 50 film i have done in my life nothing has gained this amount of attention and i sat before george h. bush a couple of days ago and we watched it together with barbara and she was crying at the end of it, so, it literally feels so much bigger than what we expected it to be. especially with george being involved, we thought it would be just be a little nice film but it has exploded on to the world scene. >>alisyn: how did you get the part? >>guest: i talked on george at an award academy in 2006, george lucas, mr. lie -- lucas and he said he was doing the roth and i waited six months and i didn't hear, and i had my agent call in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009 it came into being. >>clayton: for students history with may not be aware of the tuskegee airmen, how important is the tuskegee airmen important to history and world war ii? >>guest: the person i depicted in the film, he spearheaded the move toward designature griggs -- desegregation of the military loading to the desegregation of the south and of most of the businesses. so we would not have the equality we have today without their accomplishments but the "red tails," they were responsible for clearing the benches of normandy so the troops could get on and invade. >>clayton: on a foggy morning when no one could see the ground flying intoing for, rain and mist to clear the beeps. >>guest: and one of the good things as they had about two years of practice before they would get into the fight and the white pilots had three months and were shipped out so by the time they got into the fight, they were aces and they were so discipline asked they would never leave the sight of the bombers which made the difference in the war and gave the allies the opportunity to be confident about what they were about to accomplish. >>dave: was had a special bond? inaccuracies and we can talk about that. >>dave: the "washington post" and another labeled the ad very, very misleading to say the very least. here is newt gingrich calling for truth in the super pac ads. >> the idea that a candidate can make a claim and yell foul the minute you ask him to prove it, is just silly. to he cannot stand up today and defend his claim how does he stand up to obama in the fall? so my challenge to the governor is simple: the only place he worked was bane. he claims he created 100,000 jobs. release the records. show us the facts. you can't run for president, have half your campaign be about your great achievements and hide them. >>alisyn: there are no records. the amount of jobs created, those numbers are fudgible and all over place and mitt romney says 100,000 and at time he had said 10,000. but what is continue any, people have called newt gingrich and rick perry have called for mitt romney to come out and tell us the truth but he has not had to because reporters have fact checked all of this including fact checking what he really did at bain and it turns out reporters are doing his job and he is come willing out looking good as a result. rick perry has gone down in south carolina. so, this is just the latest poll. >>dave: most have rick santorum higher than that and rick perry lower than that and that could be, something to do with rick santorum and where he stands. some thought had could be a truce between newt gingrich and rick santorum to take on mitt romney and that not what is happening in the palmetto stake because rick santorum taking on newt saying "when newt was in leadership in the united states house of representatives as speaker three years into the term conservatives tried to throw him out." conservative officials knew of the plan of solyndra to fire workers according to newly released e-mails. >>dave: peter has the details. always friday evening on a holiday weekend. >>peter: on october 27th, the white house knew that solyndra who they gave $353 million to was having major issues but they kept the news quiet and now we have an e-mail from a white house aide to the director of energy and climate change policy that says here is the deal: solyndra will announce they are laying off 200 of the 1,200 workers. that is not good. the chairman of the house energy and commerce committee have responded saying that the sad truth is solyndra loan was tainted by stimulus politics from the out set rushed owe the door over the roasts of the administration's top expert, layoffs delayed until after the elections indefensible loan restructuring that left taxpayers on the hook for half a billion. but in a letter to the committees the white house counsel made clear they think there is no support for the allegations of political favoritism and improper white house interference that was the noble focus of the committee concerns. the chairman of the house oversight committee disagrees. >> one thing that bothers me the most is they were more concerned about whether news of solyndra's layoffs would come out before the midterm elections than about whether their plan to finance valid signatures to get on the ballot for the march 6 primary. will others later joined the lawsuit and only ron paul and mitt romney qualify with this word on if they will appeal. >> former mississippi governor is stirring up controversy in the final days in office. he granted pardons or clemency to more than 200 convicts some freed or convicted killers. family members of the victims are the election because a lot of people are saying, is there anyway that anyone can overtake romney, and the question is, if the choice is between mitt romney and someone other than romney but the someone other than mitt romney ends up being three or four people where the vote is splintered then million will win not just south carolina but, probably, florida and the nomination. so, the question is, is there aniest, ability, or desire to coalesce around one candidate who provides the contrast or the comparison to mitt romney and that is even what is going on in a lost conservative circles, a lot of people who for whatever republican, maybe say, gee, we don't want mitt romney, that's where the issue is, do they pick newt? do they pick santorum? huntsman? ron paul? rick perry? those are the obligations. >>dave: you will speak to the candidates and they will interact with undecided voters because this are so many undecided in all of states. what is the most important thing from the voters? is it the elect billed or what is the one factor? >>guest: well, that is one of the reasons we think the forum is so important because the questions are being raised by voters in south carolina, who have designated themselves as undecided. they will come with the questions that will help them decide we think it will be very instructive to other south carolina voters and to voters around the country so they can see the candidates in a very different for mat, that the candidates do not appear together and they cannot attack each other or mention each other they have to address the questions posed. they are not given a clock in terms you have to answer this question in 30 seconds but, all of them have exactly the same amount of time to respond to questions that will be posed bird the undecided voters. congressman scott representing this district has regular townhalls and we are come boyneing our -- combining our show with the beautiful ton hall in the college of anger and hate. what does that say about our country? >>governor huckabee: well, for 2th years -- 2,000 years people have been hating an expression of love of jesus. but what i find amazing why would people have a problem with a young man who promotes something that every parent who want if his children? that is, deep sense of love of family, faith in god, commitment and discipline to be a sense of humility. i would think that would be a parents' dream to raise a young man as much like tim tebow not because he wins but because he competes with his heart and he does not call attention to himself and his ability but he calls his attention to god. it is refreshing. i would love do see a poeter of him in every child's room opposed to a guy who is bothering children out of wedlock and being busted for drugs. this is a nice thing to be controversial. >>alisyn: all thing he does off the field, he cares for people who are suffering, or sick and gives them this v.i.p. treatment, flies them in, and that is also very beautiful. governor, we want to ask you about the evangelical leaders that get together and they are getting together to try to see if they can zero in on a candidate they like best. are they still casting about for someone other than romney or getting more comfortable with romney? >>guest: well this meeting is probably not going to result in sort of the great road to damascus moment. i don't see it. in large measure because there is a lost christian organizations who are already invested in a candidate. some are with perry, some with santorum, some are ron paul and some are ron paul and why see them abandoning the guy they committed to and if they did here is the problem. they have waited so late to make this decision their state wednesday will not necessarily follow them because their constituents have already invested in candidates and decided they will support someone, and they will not change just because the leaders of an organization they support has said, well i have decided i will support newt gingrich or rick santorum or rick perry or mitt romney. >>clayton: get a calendar. it is late in the election season right now. i agree. get a >> well, we did, we went and we beinged liao-- we looked at the plant and pictures of it. it's been a bic pen plant since it was closed employs 80 people. who wholesome burns that made photo albums and scrap books. people said there was little economic impact from that plant can closing and the economy was better then than it is now and most if not all of those jobs were reabsorbed for other companies and they think the most part it's a dead issue and a major article in newspaper and people in the town are saying, huh? what issue, nobody's remembering anything about it, and apparently back at the time, there was not even one drop of earning, according to another publication, that was spent on talking about that they think closing down. so for the folks in gaffney, it does seem to be a nonissue so a lot of people fairly puzzled exactly what rick perry was going after for that line of attack. >> alisyn: that explains why he's retired it since then. >> reporter: if it don't work, put it back in your pocket. >> alisyn: thanks for the info, john. >> clayton: thanks, john. mitt romney, who is sharing that lead statistically if you look at one new poll we showed you earlier with newt gingrich at 29% is bringing out the big guns. he's gotten endorsement of nicky haley the governor, and ambassador bolten 0en his behalf and senator john mccain and throwing support and pulling out in south carolina to show support for him. >> dave: the big question, do the endorsements really help? there's been a new research, a new study from pew research, that shows that there's not a huge difference maker out there, because, chris christie was thought to be the one that really would move the political needle for mitt romney, and his campaigning may make a difference, but the endorsements alone don't seem to be making much of a deference. here is a look at the numbers. from pew, there is a couple of endorsements that appear to mean an awful lot. the numbers are-- >> george w. bush and sarah palin are the two on the top of the charts that would make you more likely to vote for a candidate, but look at the bottom. those are small pictures, but they are john mccain, herman cain, and donald trump at the very bottom in terms of-- >> well, look at the numbers. >> dave: swaying. >> alisyn: even at the top, george bush and sarah palin not that different and notice that they're significance. most people say it makes no difference in how they vote. 59%, 64%, makes no deference. you don't know if people are being honest, if subliminally, i like this candidate, i can't put my finger on it, but i like this candidate. if that's what it does or people aren't registering. >> like in certain poll questions, do you read a book a week and people go, you know, i do and like aspirationally answer certain poll questions and you're right, according to the research they think they may be overstated numbers, people like to think that they're independent minded. if president george w. bush comes out and makes an endorsement, that's not going to sway my opinion i'm an independent minded individual. >> alisyn: and pull the lever. >> dave: one coveted endorsement despite the numbers is jeb bush as we move toward the florida primary on the 31st. that will be interesting. thought to be a supporter of mitt romney, and we'll see, see if that makes a difference. does it matter to you, the these endorsements? let's ask steven hays, senior writers for the weekly standard. steven, nice to see you. >> good, clayton, how are you. >> clayton: looks like newt gingrich is tricking up a little bit in the poll. are they have an effect? here is the latest poll. >> too early to tell whether there's a cause-effect with the polls? the broader argument doesn't help mitt romney. we've had a series of attacks and criticisms from newt gingrich and rick perry and huntsman and others, and unresponded. i think the romney campaign found their footing and found a way to respond that tells a different side of the story and put out the add, talks about the jobs created with staples, which is a company that people are familiar with, or sports authority, and people can understand, if you make these initial investments and you create a company like that, it's going to lead to job and they've done an effective jobs leading to attacks. >> clayton: there's been criticism, as you well know, whether or not he's answered the bain krit searches effectively and weem want to see the records, the tax records and critics argue there's a murky practice what private equity is and does the romney campaign need to be more effective in dealing with the issues? >> i don't think so. i mean, i think the way that they've answered them thus far is adequate for now. maybe they have to provide more details some point down the road and careful not to get sucked into a line by line discussion of what happened in the 1990's, over you know, some-- whether it's sports authority that has been successful or a company that hasn't been successful. the romney campaign has no interested in getting sucked into that debate. they need a big picture debate. who do you want to choose for the next leader of the country. a guy who had a successful career in private equity and private sector and they would argue creating jobs, knows how the economy works or somebody like president obama, who's worked his entire life in government. had three years of what they would say are failed government policies, a stimulus plan that plainly didn't work or do the obama administration has done and i think that's the way that the romney campaign wants to frame it. >> clayton: on the special report panel, and charles krauthammer basically declaring ron paul in many ways the most authentic of the candidates, say what you want about him. he's more than a candidate and probably has an effective message that goes beyond the campaign. and you look at what happening in south carolina right now against president obama, at least in the new poll. 33%, put this poll up on the screen here and 33% against president obama and he appears to be the weakest among going up against president obama. if the polls in south carolina have him riding darn high. what do you make of the ron paul candidacy going forward? >> i think the short take, he's crazy, but his supporters aren't. it's not crazy to think if you're a republican and you want to vote for a candidate who is speaking to the problems in the way that you see these problems, these are huge problems, we're 15 trillion dollars in debt and ron paul is talking about basically coming to washington and blowing everything up and starting from scratch. shutting down five cabinet agencies, cutting a trillion dollars from the budget in the first year. and these are things that are probably not realistic, but for many republican primary voters, that sound like what washington needs. i mean, to me that sounds like what washington needs. >> clayton: and leave it on this, but hear some tea party folks saying he's the one true tea party candidate? >> yeah, i think he's spoken to these issues consistently and effectively. when pollsters ask voters what issues matter to you. the size and scope of government and the size of the economy. ron paul has been talking about these things incessantly and talking in a way he think speaks to the people's understanding of the size of the problems. and that's important. that's what separated him to a certain extent from the other candidates. >> clayton: all right, packers favored by eight. how confident are you going into the game? >> i don't think so, but you know, sometimes you wonder, don't you? this is the most unique story ever in football. there's never been a tim tebow. i mean, he's not a prototype type quarterback, he's a college quarterback, a runner, he doesn't throw leak quarterbacks do and all about the passing game. and he comes from a very religious family, and these people are evangelists and he's been a great christian role model from ledge to pro and says the right things ands' to be enjoyed. and this whole run is unbelievable. and after the things he's done this year, to bring the team back from the throes of defeat to win. we start thinking, is there a devean intervention here, something going on that we don't know? what's the mystery. i will assure you if he beats the new england patriots tonight and it will be most watched playoff game of the weekend by far, if he wins, and the denver broncos win, that 43% may go to 93%. we turn now to the host of justin with jeanine pirro. how common for a judge to postpone a trial when the attorneys say my client is not healthy. the judge, what you're going to say is, okay, we'll adjourn it. but this is the third ajournment, this case was adjourned in september through john edwards' daughter's wedding and the attorneys needed more time to prepare. it was adjourned last month because he had a medical issue and needed more time to prepare. and it is adjourned yesterday for at least another two months because he has a medical issue again, arrhythmia, which may require a pacemaker. my question is this, alisyn, if you had a medical condition last night and if it's life threatening, why haven't you dealt with it already? why are you walking around coming in court? get it on. >> we don't know exactly the details of the condition although it's been released it's arrhythmia and may require a pace lake maker. do we assume that the judge knows more than we do. you doesn't believe the attorney. >> no, especially in a case such as this. the judge apparently spoke with the cardiologist of john edwards and made a decision that, you know, she's going to grant this third delay. meanwhile, alisyn, the federal prosecutors are opposing all of these delays, saying that it will prejudice them. but make no mistake, every defendant wants a delay in the trial, because as time goes on, witnesses memories fade, people get less interested in it, one of the main witnesses here died, that's one of the contributors, who gave edwards this money to cover up the affair with his mistress while he was running for president on a family values platform. >> alisyn: platform, yes, that's right. now, let's talk about this case. six felony and misdemeanor claims that he violated campaign contribution laws, with this contribution, he said that from a friend, as a judge, how will the judge ever get to the bottom of whether or not a friend gave him some cash so he could cover up his affair or if it was a campaign contribution, officially? >> look, look, i checked it out. you've got, you're right. six counts, conspiracy, illegal use of contributions and false statement. the issue the defense says it's a novel issue, they say, look, these contributions were from friends $925,000 from two people not given to the campaign. but the feds are using the statute, which is an unusual interpretation, to say, it was in effect, to effect and election and therefore, it was essentially a campaign contribution. it's unique, novel application of the law. did it affect the campaign, yes, because his platform was family values. his mistress is pregnant and he's hiding her, so the money that went from his friends from his mistress was to in effect to impact the campaign. an interesting issue, 30 years by the way he faces. >> alisyn: wow. quickly tonight on your show? >> well, i think everyone agrees that what the marines did was wrong and they should be disciplined for it, but i think it's really important to put it in the context of the environment we're asking young men and women to go into. they're tired, they're cold, tired of living in the shadows, they're afraid and witnessing horrific acts and fighting an enemy that has no problems cutting the heads off innocent aid workers and using children and toddlers to blow up innocent people in markets to make a point and what you saw was marines who had an inexcusable, wrong, but emotional reaction to a traumatic environment and i think some people have gotten carried away in making comparisons and saw one person talking about the marines need to be brought to justice using the same language used to describe osama bin laden. but what they did was wrong and they're going to be disciplined for it and needs to be a teach and teaching lesson for the rest of the marine corps, but let's not call into question the character of these brave brave men who put their life on the line, who leave their families to fight a violent war against a brutal enemy, and they do it for our protection and safety. >> indeed, perspective is important here. leon panetta called it utter deplorable. do you agree with that character sae characterization. >> i think what was done was wrong, but emotional reaction to the environment if you've never been there is hard to understand. you know, it's really hard to put in context the fear and the danger and the things that go through these-- i mean, we're talking about teenagers, at times, who have never been in a fist fight in their life. and volunteer, and get sent to a horrific environment. i think it's wrong and they should be disciplined for it, and the marine corps and military will handle that, but to watch people who live a climate controlled life, who at times the greatest worry is maybe their latte is not the right temperature, cast disparaging comments on marines who did the wrong they think, but aren't inherently bad people, i think-- >> you in fact served and i think it helps for folks to hear what you've been through. what you've seen, things you've had to endure, friends and family, so tell the folks out there the things that you've been forced to endure. >> well, so many tens of thousands of great men and women have stepped up in this war to serve and i'm just one who only did two deployments. so many have done so much more, seen so many more difficult things and go into the context environment of combat and warfare and doing it to protect your country and family and sacrifices the families are making are intense and they're real and they're lasting. and i think it's really important that our overriding concern or effort be to thank the families and thank those who are serving and say we appreciate your service, when mistakes are made, and if they have a mistake, they'll correct it, but we're not going to call it to question their question. >> and you, sir had a cousin killed, and another both legs amputated at the knee. and thank you for your service, and thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me on. >> dave: more "fox & friends" in two minutes. stick around. that's good morning, veggie style. hmmm. for half the calories plus veggie nutrition. could've had a v8. why settle for a one-note cereal?
