>> i agree with both your assessments. i think that there were two very different responses yesterday from the administration. first i have to say i was pleasantly surprised when eric holder, in no uncertain terms came out and condemned the assassination attempt on those two officers. in the parlance of the street when you call someone a punk you really do diminish their manhood or any kind of righteous justification they may have. you absolutely paint them with the proper brush. they are lower than low-lifes. they are punks. they are not worthy of consideration. the crime was a heinous crime. holder really surprised me. i did not expect it particularly in light of the scathing justice department report on ferguson and the police department. >> that's a low bar, if you'd expect the attorney general to condemn brutally -- >> be that as it may, i was pleasantly surprised, brian. i thought okay, now he's laid it out. because, why? because there are two things going on. there are the -- you know the legitimate grievance the president alluded to. that's true. and the justice department has issued this scathing report, et cetera, et cetera. but this hideous attack against police officers cannot be put in the context of the demonstrations. this wasn't a slight excess in an otherwise righteous protest. this was a horrible crime that goes right against the soul of civilization. if the police can't be safe, then none of us can be. and i think that what happens with the president is, he's too cool for school. first of all, he's in the kimmel context. you want to see this? >> let's listen to last night. >> they're not the majority and in the same way that you can't generalize about police officers who do an extraordinarily tough job overwhelmingly they do it professional. you can't generalize about protesters who it turns out had some very legitimate grievances. the justice department shows that they were being stopped -- african-americans were being stopped disproportionately. >> my beef is you can't put the legitimate grievance in the same sentence as the cop shooting. they aren't part of the same continuum. when you are declaring war on people whose job is to keep law and order you are challenging civilization itself. it's got to be much more firm, much more equivocal. >> what should he say? what's the script? >> all right. i'll give it to you. "put aside whatever legitimate grievance may exist in ferguson and other cities. put that aside. this crime cannot stand. this assault on our officers cannot stand. this is an assault on --" you use the language of isis. when you are condemning someone attacking our cops you have to be -- use war language. "we must stop this." "we must hunt them down." "this cannot stand." "we will not abide it." "i stand shoulder to shoulder with every man and woman in blue" and that would be great. >> is the danger in connecting those two that someone will be morally justified in taking action in this case against the officers when you put both together? >> you are absolutely right that's exactly what it is. what you do is you say, little johnny ran off a little too much. we'll reel him back in. he only tried to kill the cop. it may be that holder now as he is thinking of leg siz and 11 1acyies and 1 1th hour1 -- 11th hour. >> he's always in the 11th hour. >> eric holder got it right. we criticize him -- >> holder got it right and the president got it wrong. >> the president was way too cool for school. >> again, i didn't spend enough time in the streets. massapequa is not the streets of any inner city. i give you that. but i actually thought those words were not appropriate. >> you're not allowed back. literally just say this. eric holder, this was an assassination attempt. the last time they were successful, the ambush -- the police chief said this is exactly like new york city. it was an ambush. it was a push to kill. "punk" is like somebody who steals your wallet. >> when the officers in brooklyn were shot dead, assassinated here in new york over the christmas holidays, it was clear to everyone that what had happened was this this sloppy fiery language of anti-police rhetoric helped fuel a mentally unstable person to then take the horrible act of trying to murder and in fact succeeding in murdering two new york city cops. the people who protest police excess have to be careful that they don't give the language of inspiration to people who ultimately become urban terrorists and commit murder. i think that the president has to be very unequivocal. whether or not the context of jimmy kimmel was correct i think that's just packaging. >> even there he could have used very strong language and put these two issues as very very -- >> instead he said they had legitimate grievances and that could haunt him. should not be in the same sentence. >> thank you. it is about ten minutes after the top of the
