He says he made that choice after learning that there are threats of violence against the department if he stayed there. They had some information that suggested there were going to be acts taken against either members of the department or the department itself related to his continued employment. When darrell was told that, he simply said thats enough and it was time to resign. On sunday a protest carried over on to the football field when several members of the st. Louis rams walked out during pregame introductions with their hands raised and their hands up dont shoot gesture. That has st. Louis Police Officers association calling on the nfl to take disciplinarian action against the players. They call it the display, one that Police Officers around the nation found tasteless, offensive and inflammatory. Today he is selfmade. 23 million quit their jobs because they think there is upward mobility and theyre starting to see it. You can focus on the outliars but if you look at the population as a whole we see the latino population in the United States is poor now and it is predictable it will be poor 200 years from now. If you look at the black population, you see tremendous continuity in staying at the bottom of society. Even groups as obscure as people with french yearnings have remained at the bottom of the social distribution for the last hundred years or more. Professor how do you respond to living the American Dream is something that i think a lot of people feel they are achieving. 66 according to a recent study, own a home. 78 have a good education, they believe. 74 have a decent job. 81 feel they are giving their children a better life than they had. How do you respond to that . Its absolutely the case that america is a relatively rich society, though there are plenty of other european societies that are also very rich. But i think an important thing for people is what their relative social position is, and the news there is that its very hard for groups in society to change their relative social mobility except in a very large number of generations. Charles, do you believe youre an outlieer with your success or do you believe youre like everyone else trying to make it work . I dont believe im an outliar but i will say those groups the professor talked about, the irony here is they are being held back more than anything else by this giant welfare system that encourages them to stay at the bottom. It is a frightening thing because if the American Dream is fading it is because of progressive policies that makes things like the Professors College extraordinarily expensive to go to and encourages people to stay at the bottom of the rung. That is the only problem we have in this country right now. Final word, professor . It turns out Government Policies dont seem to have any effect on the rate of social mobility. Good morning to you. The conversation seems to be centered on the relationship between Law Enforcement and citizens here. Do you believe that the message coming from the white house and the administration and eric holder here is really, hey, look, its demonizing Law Enforcement, according to many. Do you believe that theyre being too hard on Law Enforcement . I think theyre being very hard on Law Enforcement. At the same time, theyre really inciting people to go out and do what theyre doing. You look at ferguson. Its a very sad situation. I knew somebody who lived and actually know somebody who lives in ferguson and they cant believe whats happening. They had a community that really worked or seemed to have worked and now all this hatred is coming out. Its a tremendous hatred. And the police are on one side and other people are on the other side. You have so many other people inciting and trying to get their own two cents in and theyre trying to incite problems. You know who the people are and theyre the same people that always incite problems. It is a real difficult situation. We need leadership at the White House Level and in all fairness, africanamericans have faired very, very poorly. You look at the statistics, very, very poorly under president obama. You would have thought it would have been the opposite. But their numbers are horrible under president obama. Theyve done very poorly, worse than every other group. You really would have thought it would have been the other. The dream that president obama was focusing on when he first got elected, it hasnt turned out to be. What do you think his chances for becoming a team member of another nfl team are this season . You know, the interesting thing with ray rice, he was really an example of a lot of good things. He was a fantastic guy, everything was good. Then he had this devastating incident and it has hurt him so badly and hurt his wife and his family and it was horrible and what did he was horrible. But i also believe in Second Chances. I think that he will be given a Second Chance. Hes got to play great, but he will be given a Second Chance by somebody and i believe that he should be at some point given a Second Chance. He has made a lot of decisions that worked out to be not so good. This is one of them. This whole situation has been amazing. At the same time, every time you see him, he stands up and apologizes and at some point you have to stop apologizing. He was not in the elevator. He didnt do the hitting, but i will say it has not been handled properly by anybody, frankly. Whether its ray rice or its the commissioner, its been hammed badly by everybody. They bargained to give the commissioner all say on all these suspensions. If im the commissioner, i dont even want that. I want a collaborative process. Thats right. No matter what he does, there is no question about it. But at some point you have to get back and you have to make your statement and not keep making it. Have to just dooger was like what you have to do. Look, this is a national problem. This is a world problem. You look at whats going on throughout the world and the world is turning out to be an evil place. You dont judge the fight on one round, even if we get knocked down, we get up and go to the corner and come out fighting the next round you won the first round, mr. Prosecutor, but dont cut your gloves off cause the fights not over justice will come to ferguson you have the president and the white house trying to make things better and you have al sharpton seeming to inflame, according to many. Whats your take on that, crystal . Isnt it interesting, elisabeth, that justice indeed was served and here we have al sharpton on sunday, a at this of worship for christians all over this country, inciting more lawlessness . And i think black americans need to really ask themselves, who benefits when al sharpton comes in to an environment and a city with trumped up racist charges . Id rather see the president come out, give a speech to the American People and talk about this transformative healing that he ran on in 2008. Every time we turn around, we have more people within his administration pitting whites against blacks. And i think its got to stop. He needs to rebuke al sharpton who is not a revere end. And its really being instigated by people like al sharpton, who, by the way, has a platform on another network that im not going to mention. Well, isnt it interesting that eric holder was one of the first people along with president obama, to weigh in on the Trayvon Martin shooting, weigh in on the side of Trayvon Martin and his family before the facts were in, same thing we saw with eric holder and the Michael Brown case. I think hes the absolute wrong person to go down and try to have any real, honest discussion on Race Relations and isnt it interesting that eric holder is going down to atlanta. Hes going to speak tonight at an i think an all black church, elisabeth, and how is that going to heal things . Okay. Again, were dividing whites against blacks. If hes really interested in an honest discussion about race and really whats going on, i think white people need to be at the table. I think hispanic people need to be at the table. But more importantly, all this is doing is this is just placating the majority of black americans who voted for president obama. And in fact, many of these immigrants, up to 3 million, already pay payroll taxes, and paying into the system for years through the irs taxpayer system. But as far as detailed credible intelligence that backs up this report of five planes, christmas, europe, we dont have that as of yet. Not out of the realm of possibility. Brian, you were speaking with walid earlier on what the threat means and why the competition between isil and alqaeda is extremely important. Alqaeda is competing with isis. Its like the terrorists have a market they want to win over the isis jihaddists who are seizing syria and iraq. Alqaeda has tried to do this in the past. Remember they began with 911. And before that in 1999, they wanted to bring down five jets over the pacific. In 2006, they also tried to bring down jets with liquid explosives over the atlantic. And while these bombings have slowed some of their efforts, it has not stopped them. Shes already struck out in two lower courts. But employees and women across the country will be watching this decision very closely. Joining me for debate, Trial Attorney who will be taking the side of the former ups driver and employment attorney, who will be taking the side, i believe, of ups. So this is set to be heard by the Supreme Court this week, december 3. So all eyes are on it, for great reason. We saw that the photo there, peggy, her daughter now 7. This has been hanging for a long time. Two courts did not rule in her favor thus far. This is why were look at it now. Was there discrimination involved . David, you think . Absolute discrimination because its not only the ability to work that the act looks at, its the ability to work. Here she was not treated like other employees who had an inability to work who got modified duty. Those that fall off a tree or whatever who were injured in the line of duty. So she should be treated the same as those employees. But according to the civil disabilities act, employees disabilities, there was an amendment that changed. In 2006, was she covered . Its two different aspects. First is the pregnancy discrimination act. And under that, ups was only required to treat her the same as everybody else. There is no specific accommodation that has tool made for a pregnant woman. The americans are disabilities act, heavy lifting injuries or when she couldnt lift a box over 70 pounds would have been covered under the americans with disabilities act in 2008 and it wasnt in 2006. A pregnant woman is not subject to the americans with disabilities act for the reason that shes just because shes pregnant. There is some other condition at play, then she could be covered and have the benefits of that act. Interestingly enough, ups changed its policy. They believed it was appropriate to update its workplace policies so that we can attract and retain the best work force that we can. How will this play, david, if you have to say . I think the Supreme Court will certainly rule that there was discrimination on the part of ups and theyll rule in her favor. Absolutely in this case. You know, ups was not what they did was within the confines of the law. They did not violate the pregnancy discrimination act. And to speak to their new policy, now there is a trend among the states to provide protections for women specifically relating to pregnancy. So states might require a company give these employees accommodations. So for a company like ups to have this blanket policy that works on a national level, this change is likely due to the fact that will help them comply with state and local is it an olive branch or indication they may be fearing that something may come down on them . I think theyre going to fear it because its discriminatory. The fact is they had a policy and the policy discriminated against pregnant women. Its as clear as day. I think this is a clear cut case. Were moved by it. Tell us what led to it. Good morning. You know, it was part of our free speech event. We were having a rally here in portland, oregon. And we were trying to keep a minimum police presence, but still provide an area of safety for the folks to have their avenue to talk about the issue at hand, to vent as a community, and myself and my colleague and mine got dispatched to an area where we were helping control some traffic and block the street for them. And i noticed about ten or 15 feet away from me, brian and i both noticed, davonte. He was holding a sign that said free hugs. We kind of laughd about it and had a nice smile about it and thought it was cute that the young child had this sign. Then as we looked closer, we noticed he was crying. And itwas very perplexing. So i looked at brian and i said, im going to call him over. And i motioned to him. He decided to come on over and we just engaged in a really nice conversation and it was pretty heartfelt. Then i noticed through ourn, wet talking about life. We were talking about school. We were talking about travel. I asked him the things he likes to do. He really told me he likes to do art. And so it kind of broke down some barriers between the two of us and stopped the tears that he had flowing. It was really heartfelt. I could tell that we had a connection and it just kind of evolved from there. Before you left, you said hey, can you give do i get a hug . Then he hugged you, right . Yeah. He approached me, he set his sign down on the ground and we had this intent conversation and i could really tell he was a pretty important kid, a pretty special kid, intelligent for his age through our conversation. And the conversation had a natural break in it. It was ending. I could sense that his mom was over on the side taking some photos of us and i looked down at the sign and i pointed to it and i said, hey, do i get one of those . And the tears started flowing again. My eyes welled up when he grabbed me, cause he really did grab pretty tight. It wasnt just a tensecond hug. This was a meaningful hug. Here is what his mom wrote and i could see the emotion on both of you there. It was one of the most emotionally charged experiences ive had as a mom. She adopted davonte. Yes.
