A nurse in kansas is undergoing a blood transfusion to save her life hopefully. Were outside in dallas with the latest. Reporter were learning more about this nurse who has become infected with ebola here in texas. Shes 26 years old, just graduated from a texas Nursing School, t. C. U. , texas christian university, back in 2010 so shes only been on the job for about four years or so. Nina pham is her name. Were told she is stable at texas Presbyterian Health where she is employed as a critical nurse. Still unclear from Health Officials on how she contracted the disease despite wearing protective equipment like gloves and gowns. In all the hospital estimates around 70 Staff Members had exposure to Thomas Duncan during his care here. No one else is sick but they are being monitored closely and top Health Officials warned of even more infections at this point. I feel awful that a Health Care Worker became infected in the care of an ebola patient. She was this trying to help the first patient survive. We need to consider the possibility that there could be additional cases, particularly among the Health Care Workers who cared for the index patient when he was so ill. Not something you want to hear; right . Meantime, that nurse has been receiving mass plasma products donated by dr. Kent brantly. He is the american doctor who caught ebola while he was working in liberia but came back to the United States, was successfully treated and is doing much better, doing well. He donated plasma products to be given to this nurse. We understand he tried to donate that for Thomas Duncan but their blood types did not match. Hopefully that will help her beat this and be on the road to recovery. Thank you very much. Also, yesterday we told you there was some cryptic notes about this particular nurse, just 26 years old. She went to t. C. U. She graduated in 2010. But you know what there she is right there, nina pham with her spaniel dog bentley. She only got her certificate for Critical Care nursing on august 1. So she had only been in this particular job for a couple of months. Just one other note. We told you that one other person is in isolation down in fort worth, a Company Called alcon, an eye care company, sent out a news release saying that one of their associates was in isolation. Reportedly he is her boyfriend. Frieden comes out yesterday as you just saw and says essentially i didnt mean to blame her. Im sorry it came off like that. I feel terrible she came down with this but the only thing we can think of is somewhere along the line she violated protocol. And you have 70 other workers who did all sorts of things trying to help mr. Duncan survive and he didnt. They are going to be observed. The virus takes 21 days to show symptoms to have anything in you to test positive for it. Yesterday bill oreilly had enough. He watches frieden every single day. He listens to his explanation and says this guy is not telling the truth. Frieden should resign, as he well knows. Charter flights could carry medical and military personnel to the affected areas in africa, and thats the way they should be transported, by charter. So that monitoring can be very close. That does also include the city of atlanta with this line of storms youre also looking at areas of very heavy rain, so watch out again for Severe Weather coming up across parts of the southeast. In the Atlantic Ocean weve had a relatively quiet atlantic hurricane season but look at this next storm system. Its hurricane gonzolo, category 2. Right now maximum sustained winds at 110 Miles Per Hour. The forecast track is for it to stay away from the east coast of the u. S. On the other hand if they are going to prosecute him, this report likely evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of their own case against him and they dont want to reveal that unless and until they have to. So the procedure is pretty much the same in the military as in the civilian world, where civilian prosecutors prepare these all the time for their bosses when theyre deciding whether or nothto recommend an indictment against a particular defendant. Members of her church, including her family in fort worth, describe her as an extremely Passionate Care giver. She has received plasma from another ebola survivor, dr. Kent brantley, that american doctor who also got the virus while working in liberia. He apparently flew to dallas overt weekend to donate and help. He was successfully treated for ebola a few months ago. He tried to do so for Thomas Duncan. He tried donating plasma, but their blood types apparently did not match. At this point its not clear how pham became infected because she was wearing protective gear, gloves, mask, shields and the like. Those people that may have been near Nuclear Power plants or other petrochemical injuries used to dealing with Hazardous Waste and containment may be a little more prepared than other organizations that havent seen this much activity. From our perspective, all we hear about is Different Things theyre considering. Were considering doing this, were considering doing that. Theyre considering narrowing it down to the amount of hospitals that treat these people that might have or do have ebola, knocking it down to four or five, like the one youre at. I do understand the frustration and i do understand the concern. Every hospital is obligated today to activate plans to train their staff. We had the National Nurses organization just yesterday comment that there is a great concern that nurses are not adequately prepared to have the protective, the Personal Protective Equipment, how to use it, and the right equipment. And i believe all of this needs to be addressed at a very high level and rapidly. Surely. As we look at images of that hospital in texas where Thomas Duncan died last week and now apparently he has infected one of the nurses, thats not one of the hospitals you mentioned. You mentioned emory, the place innr nebraska, one in montana. Maybe this particular facility wasnt built for this. So should the nurse who has been infected now, nurse nina pham, should she be moved to one of the other centers or is it too dangerous right now . I think that that is definitely something to be considered. And i must say that this is a decision between the physicians presently caring for her and the patient herself. We have opportunities here. We want to educate all of our hospitals. Larger hospitals treat many different types of patients with Infectious Diseases every day. This is unprecedented for the United States7s to deal with sh an aggressive virus such as ebola. The texas people i believe have given it their best shot. We are learning tremendously from what they are doing. Now they have a Health Care Provider who is a true hero that we are going to support and i believe that she should be offered every opportunity available. And there are 70 others that could have had the same exposure and were going to see to the 21day incubation period whether they will be infected as well. Saying well consider all these other options. Absolutely. Absolutely. We must continue to train every hospital, must assume the responsibility to educate their staff, to regularly drill, regularly train. The reason why some of these organizations are specialty organizations is we Different Levels of hospitals have isolation rooms, have negative pressure rooms. We know how to don protective equipment, but the people who practice it every day, they practice it several times a week, these are the people who are going to be the best at it. According to the statement that we just received, it was an al con associate that worked here in north texas who had contact with this nurse and that associate is now in the hospital here at Texas Health Presbyterian being monitored and tested for ebola because he had contact with the nurse once she started showing the symptoms. However, were told that this associate is not sick and they do not believe anyone else in the office where this person worked is at risk. This comes as were learning more information about that nurse who became infected with the ebola virus here. 26 years old, just graduated from Nursing School in 2010. Nina pham. Shes stable. Where she used to be or still is employed as a Critical Care nurse, still unclear, however, from Health Officials on just how she contracted the disease despite wearing Personal Protective Equipment like gloves and gowns while treating Thomas Duncan. In all, the hospital estimates around 70 Staff Members had exposure to duncan during his inpatient care. No one else reporting symptoms. But they are now being monitored closely. This as top Health Officials warn of more infections at this point. I feel awful that a Health Care Worker became infected in the care of an ebola patient. She was there trying to help the first patient survive. We need to consider the possibility that there could bec additional cases, particularly among the Health Care Workers who cared for the index patient when he was so ill. Reporter meantime, the nurse has received plasma products that were donated by dr. Kent brantley. Remember, hes the american doctor that caught ebola while working in liberia on a missionary trip. Yesterday he said, you know what . Maybe we need to rethink this whole thing. Thats a little scary when you think about it. I mean, first of all, im infectious, but its not ebola. So take a breath. And then we always have to backtrack and edit our comments. In the beginning it seems like hes just trying to minimize concern and shrug off any common sense understanding about how to stop this. When i heard him say that a week ago, i thought to myself, is this a Health Care Expert or is this someone who is in the obama spin room trying to minimize the economic damage . I didnt like any of that. Im sorry. And im sure hes a nice person, but this is deadly serious. We need a common sense medical professional. Not someone who is talking to the Business Community or to politicians about any of this. I mean, im so bothered by this and i think the American People have to make their voices heard. Rogers and its got to stop because all he talks about is potential, what could happen, whats not going to happen and it always happens and he never takes action. This is effective spot . Because yesterday, she used people to double down and she used people in wheelchairs as props. Mr. Abbott was on with hannity last night and he had this to say about her. If she wants to attack a guy in a heel chair, thats her prerogative. As for me, im running a different type of campaign. Im running a campaign thats focused on solving the problems of texans, like securing the border, keeping texas number one for jobs, continue fighting against barak obamas epa crushing jobs in texas. So i will focus on the future of texas while my opponent continues to attack me. What do you think about wendy davis idea . Let me get this straight. So wendy davis rises to fame, has all this hollywood support, right, because she stands against this socalled gop war against women, and the way she wants to do that is to start a war against the disabled, at least one disabled man in this hideous campaign commercial im sorry we didnt have it. But i think every democrat should be pressured to disown and disavow what wendy davis did in that ad, which is to use people who arent disabled, as actors sitting in wheelchairs in her spot. During my term as Surgeon General, we looked at this issue of restricting travel as it related to sars and some other diseases we dealt with and at the time we felt it would be counter productive for a whole host of reasons. I think its important that we look at everything now because clearly patients are slipping through and we have to do everything we can to prevent this disease from reaching our shores. So doctor, are we being hurt now because we dont have a Surgeon General . Absolutely we are. And we should do everything we can to get an appropriately vetted Surgeon General in. The current nominee i think, young man who has great potential, but just a few years out of training with no Public Health training or experience and a resume that only stands out for the fact that he was the cofounder for doctors for obama. I dont think thats the person we need now. We need a person who merits consideration, who has worked, come up through the ranks and serving as a Surgeon General of the United States. With the qualifications would be good. One of the things you would consider now is banning flights from west africa. Correct . Absolutely we should have that on the table. I applaud dr. Frieden for stepping out from the tried doctrine and saying we have to look at everything. I think that needs to be on the table as well. We recognize that our potential down sides to that, but i think we should get the thought leaders together and make another informed decision. Is there a medical reason not to do it . When we discussed this years ago during my term, the problem we were worried about was that people would seek other ways out of the country. Theyd go to the next airport that wasnt closed.
