He will continue to share the strong message we cant let this dominate us and we cant give up and surrender like joe biden is saying. We have to stay strong to see this virus together. I think the president at the end of the day were getting closer to a vaccine. At the end of the day hospitalizations are down. At the end of the day fatalities are down. The president took bold action from day one by basically insuring we would stop travel to china, something that joe biden didnt agree with. And i think donald trump has a spotty record of speaking the truth about this virus and acting on the truth. I think now that he has experienced the virus himself, unfortunately he is making it all about him. It is about his experience with the virus when millions of americans have been experiencing this virus for a very long time. And i say that because the other critical quality of any leader is a leader serves. A leader serves others. It is never about the leader, it is always about those they serve. Sandra carley, our viewers will hear you say all of that and say wait, she is a republican. You were on the Republican Debate stage in 2016 fighting for your party. Youve already said on the record you are going to vote for joe biden. Why is joe biden a better choice for you than donald trump . Well, let me say first that and i posted this in 2019. As citizens, we do not pledge allegiance to a party. We do not pledge allegiance to a person, even the president. We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america and we are faithful to the constitution and actually in our nation citizens are sovereign. Our Founding Fathers didnt want Political Parties. George washington said in 1789 the trouble with Political Parties is they will come to care only about winning. And so i do not think our job is to be loyal to a party. And i dont think that we are supposed to pledge loyalty to the leader of any party, either party. Actually, politicians work for us. Parties should work for us. President s should work for us. While i dont agree with everything joe biden believes, i dont agree with all the policies of his party. I have been a republican for all my life. I think joe biden is a stronger leader because he has demonstrated humility, empathy, the willingness to collaborate with others and the character that i think matters in a leader. Sandra what about Foreign Policy, the economy, the courts, safety in our streets . Is joe biden the right candidate for all those issues . Lets start with Foreign Policy. Actually i think from a Foreign Policy perspective, something i know a fair amount about, we are worse off in every respect. China is not humble or weaker, they are stronger, same is true of russia and north korea. Kim jongun is closer to china, our allies in south korea and japan are confused by our behavior and meanwhile he continues to build more weapons. Nato allies do not believe they can count on us. I think there are a host of things that say that actually we are not progressing in Foreign Policy. With regard to the economy, i think donald trump has done a relatively good job with the economy but he also has run up our deficits to an unmanageable level on his watch. And just yesterday when the Federal Reserve chairman said that more stimulus was necessary to keep the economy growing, donald trump inex politicably yanked to rug from his negotiator and said we wont play on another stimulus package. He has done a very good job with the courts. I agree he has done a good job with the courts and Mitch Mcconnell deserves a huge amount of credit for that. Sandra he seems to be softening on the stimulus talks. The dow is up 460 points this morning. Something you watch closely as a former ceo of hewlettpackard being the first female leading a Major Company like that. I hear you talking about truth when it pertains to the Trump Administration and leadership. How have democrats done on the issue of truth where you have the president authorizing the declassification on the Hillary Clinton email documents. How do they rate on that . Not good in all cases, absolutely. And look, im not here to defend the democrat party. Not at all. And im not a democrat. But president ial elections are a binary choice between two people. Donald trump and joe biden in this case. And in this case i believe joe biden, through his lifetime, has demonstrated the ability to collaborate. I stress that because collaboration is critical to problem solving. He has demonstrated that he is both humble and empathetic. Critical for leaders serving others. I coach the importance of humility and empathy and on those characteristics of leadership donald trump unfortunately has not exhibited those characteristics through his lifetime and i do not believe he has exhibited those characteristics during his presidency. Sandra go back to the issues that affect women. You look what is happening with the gender gap right now. Monmouth university 2020 female vote taken before the first president ial debate. Joe biden with a sizeable lead. You see the gender gap there. Ill ask you, you just gave the president credit when it comes to the economy. We obviously saw regulations rolled back under the presidency that benefited many and did lead to a thriving economy. I dont know if you would argue that or not. Prepandemic things were pretty good. I agree with that. Sandra women say pocketbook issues are important to them. Safety in our streets. Makes the case why is joe biden leading over donald trump by such a wide margin . And can the Republican Party turn things around 28 days to election day and win over more of those female voters . Well, first i think what is becoming more and more clear on the law and order issue is the disorder and disruption that is going on in too Many American cities. Actually is happening on Donald Trumps watch, not joe bidens watch. And so i just think we have to bear that in mind. Having said that, women are Problem Solvers. Thats what women do. It is what we do in our families and what we do in our communities and what we do in our places of work and worship. People look to women to solve problems and so as women, we know that problem solving requires collaboration. It requires us to work with others. Sometimes people we dont always agree with. There are a lot of democrats who dont collaborate, okay . But joe biden has collaborated. Donald trump has not collaborated well. And when you have a situation where cities are experiencing disruption, i dont think a Problem Solver takes the opportunity to throw gasoline on that fire by lashing out at anyone who is a democrat while people are burning in the streets. Sandra President Trump said it is happening in democraticled cities and offered federal help to step in. Moving on final topic. I want to put up on the street an elle magazine cover featuring Kamala Harris going up against Vice President mike pence and you look at the cover of a magazine like elle and Kamala Harris featured on there and what justice means to her. Freedom, quality, dignity. Its not because i grant it to you, it is because you fought for it because it is your right. You ever get this kind of attention as a female so prominently featured in the president ial politics of your time in 2016 . What are you watching for when Kamala Harris takes that stage tonight . Well, first i must say in fairness when i became the first woman to lead a fortune 50 company i was on many magazine covers and having been on magazine covers i can tell you it is a mixed blessing because that kind of visibility over your gender creates a level of criticism and scrutiny that is not always fair. Secondly, i think i was on a magazine cover when i was a president ial candidate along with several other president ial candidates. And again thats a mixed blessing. What Kamala Harris needs to do and what mike pence needs to do, they both need to be respectful and calm. They need to talk about the plans, the objectives, the goals, the aspirations of their respective president ial candidates. They need each to give the American People a sense of how joe biden and donald trump will govern going forward. Sandra finally, would you say your vote for joe biden is more a vote against President Trump, carley . Or are you specifically pro joe biden . Any policies you are specifically embracing of his campaign . Well, some of his policies i do agree with. So, for example, i agree with his push to buy american. Donald trump said that during his 2016 campaign. I believe that while our economy was doing well precovid, that covid has revealed a whole set of structural issues in our economy which we must solve. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, that is a fact. Education is unequal. We must deal with that and also healthcare. Those are economic issues. They have low oxygen and working to breathe. They come in the hospital and you put them on oxygen and go through the whole regimen. Sometimes that will be a little hard to apply to somebody like the president because he did receive remdesivir, he did receive dexamethasone and experimental therapy. Tell us what is happening at the Justice Department this is a complication, sandra, that comes up a lot when we either obtain the custody of people overseas or more generally if were dealing with the nationals of another country particularly an allied country. Very often there is a difference between our criminal laws particularly with respect to European Countries because we have the Death Penalty and they dont. And that ends up being a real Sticking Point in extradition situations. There is a doctrine called the rule of specialality which says if we make a deal with a foreign country to limit the potential penalty in a criminal case to what would be the maximum penalty in that country we have to honor that when the person is brought to the United States. So i take it what happened is because they dont have the Death Penalty in britain and we do, attorney general barr agreed to take that off the table and the brits agreed to transfer these guys to us. Sandra they will appear in federal court this afternoon and then what . Well, sandra, this is very similar to what happened in connection in 1998 with the Embassy Bombings in kenya and tanzania. We obtained the custody of these people. Bring them into the u. S. Justice system and theyre treated just like american criminal defendants. They will get all the Due Process Rights under the constitution. If they have been indicted already, which i assume they probably have been, well hear more about that from d. O. J. Today, the case will be assigned to a judge and they will be arraigned on the indictment and schedule a trial. I think because they take the Death Penalty off the table a trial is highly likely. If the Death Penalty is on the table sometimes you can negotiate to get plead guilty to a life sentence to get rid of the Death Penalty. If there is no Death Penalty whats the incentive these guys have to plead guilty . Theyll look at a zillion years in jail and probably roll the dice and go to trial. Well, it looks like in the last debate President Trumps team took a few steps backward. It will be the job of his Vice President , mike pence, to bring their team a few steps forward tonight. I think one of the things that will be helpful for either side tonight is to be grounded, to come across as confident. To come across as an individual that the American People would see as president ial. I also think one of the things that was completely absent in the last debate and which weve seen historically to be very effective in these debates is a little bit of wellplaced humor. I think that there might be the opportunity for that tonight. The last interchange that we saw between joe biden and President Trump was very angry, very full of attack and it left a lot of people feeling that they didnt learn a lot. A lot of really important issues that need to be addressed. Everyone needs to shift their game forward to look at the next four years, the post covid years in the United States and talk a little bit about what they think that should and could look like for the American People, bill. There has been no real answer yet from the bidenharris team on whether or not they would turn around and pack the court in Amy Coney Barrett is approved in the senate in the coming weeks. I think youll hear a lot about that from mike pence. Working hard to bring back the womens vote in the suburbs in midwestern areas in particular. She is sort of a strong card for them in that discussion and when they get into that tonight, bill. Bill one more thing here. Joe biden is 77, a lot of people question his health. Donald trump 74. Now covid positive. I just wonder if people tune in with a different ear for this debate tonight because of those two factors . I think so. Mike pence is 61. Kamala harris is in her late 50s. They do represent the younger aspect and the Younger Generation of these two tickets. I think everyone looks at them with an eye to what they would look like as president. Both of them are potential future president s and would be using the role of the next four years to try to take that to get people to see them that way or potentially to take over. We have never had a president as old as joe biden. He would be 86 at the end of his second term and there have been polls that show a lot of americans believe, a majority of americans believe he might not go through the first term and into the second term. These two individuals have to be evaluated on the basis of that. Do the American People see them as a president of the United States in this case, bill . On Coronavirus Relief the president is urging nancy pelosi to pass piecemeal legislation to handle some of the most important issues. We should point out that there is still some unspent money, a little more than 140 billion left over from the first cares bill that could go towards the urgently needed items but it would take legislation for the money to be freed up and allocated to things like ppp, the 1200 check and relief for the airlines as well and the president tweeted last night the house and senate should immediately approve 25 billion for Airline Payroll support and 135 billion for Paycheck Protection Program for Small Business. Both of these will be fully paid for with unused funds from the cares act. Have this money, i will sign now. Negotiations between the white house and nancy pelosi are off according to the president at least for another month. Here is what else mark meadows said about that this morning. The stimulus negotiations are off. Were looking at the potential for stand alone bills. There are 10 things we agree on. If the speaker is willing to look at those things on a piece by piece basis, then were willing to look at it. Bill nancy pelosi rejected the idea of a skinny bill last month so bill no reason to believe she would want to take a piece by piece approach. You never know. Sandra doctors treating President Trump are continuing to treat President Trump at the white house this morning after being released from the hospital. The powerful steroid he is now using is usually reserved for the most severe cases of covid and can cause some side effects such as aggression, anxiety, mood changes and weight gain. Joining us now is dr. Katie passaretti, medical director of Infection Prevention and a member of the society of healthcare. Thank you for joining us this morning, doctor. What can you tell us about the president s treatment, how long he will be on it and sort of the course of events that we will see play out over the next few days . So typically steroids are used in more severe cases of covid. People that need oxygen, have more severe symptoms and issues with breathing. The typical course is about 10 days. It is a fairly high a number of different steroids out there. The one used for this purpose is a highdose steroid. There can be a number of side particularly we worry about people on it for very prolonged periods of time. But even in the short term there can be significant side effects. Feelings of euphoria, impact on mood, irritability, significant shortterm impact of the medication. Sandra you say sometimes. How frequently would one using this steroid experience those side effects . It depends a lot on the person. Some studies have shown up to 50 of people have some degree of side effects. Other studies show 10 to 15 . Either way it is pretty common. Sandra as far as looking ahead to the president s recovery here, we all hope he is improving and doing better. You look at the debate that is scheduled next week, the timeline since he was diagnosed with covid19. What is the outlook for the president and when will he know he is out of the woods as doctors suggested after releasing him from the hospital he wasnt just yet . Typically the time frame we worry about kind of getting beyond is that 7 to 10 days after diagnosis time frame. How long he remains contagious really depends on how severe his illness is. It can be anywhere from 10 days up to many longer weeks if more severe symptoms. It will be a little bit of a see how the president s clinical condition goes along, how he is feeling clinically. And how long he is considered contagious. Sandra there seems to be a lot of speculation over how the president is doing, of course. Some of that is because of the privacy of a patient. You dont release all the details. Then there are some who say there has been mixed messaging coming from the doctors and the white house and the president himself. Here is a New York Times headline why doctors arent so sure he is feeling better. Mr. Trumps physician giving an incomplete upbeat picture of his health. Warn the president is entering an unpredictable phase. Take what you will from that. What do you make of the messaging weve heard so far about the president s diagnosis and his recovery . So it is very challenging when you are not directly taking care of the patient knowing exactly whats going on in that situation. Things that would be helpful for me and more meaningful mri to weigh in on that is exactly how his respiratory status is doing. Imaging studies, chest xrays and cts, has he required oxygen in the past 24 hours, does he have a fever . A number of objective findings to help all of us have a better picture of whats going on and what the condition is and what to expect over the coming days.
