The country here is sort of united in their anger and brutality of that video that showed him being burned alive. Were Hearing Support for wider military engagement by people of jordan for continued airstrikes to pound isis both in iraq and in syria. That is really the big news in the last 24 hours. Were hearing in addition to increased number about of airstrikes the jordanian military is conducting airstrikes, has been for several weeks now in iraq. That is an expansion of the military presence of jordan in both countries. That really is the only visible sign weve seen so far, jamie of the expansion of the fight against isis by jordan so far. I want to ask you about the reports of support of isis in jordan . How does the government deal with that . Reporter for the last year or so there have been visible and vocal displays very small and visible and vocal displays of support of isis in jordan. This country is very deeply religious and population of islamic extremism particularly with ties to al qaeda. Before the death of the pilot and the king in the and country seem to say theyre drawing a line between islamic extremist groups like Muslim Brotherhood and people with ties of al qaeda. Saying youre with us or with isis. Seeing with groups like Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda Linked people released from jordanian prisons last few months there is movement to say isis is too extreme even for us are generally considered islamic extremists of the government is trying to draw this line and say, you can be part of the state. You can be deeply conservative, you can be deeply religious but if youre part of our society a part of our government you have toantiisis. So far jamie we are seeing that work to some extent. The population support whether it would be small or very, very remote for isis has really disappeared in recent weeks and months of the government here is doing a masterful job of drawing a line and circling isis as out of the mainstream here. This is something that has been mandated by congress to brief congress on National Security and approach of National Security by the Administration Since 1986. George w. Bush substantially abandoned the practice. Only turned in two. President obama only turned in one, so why now, so why do one of these . It would seem to suggest that the administration is looking to cohere its Foreign Policy make some argument that there is some cohesion to what it is doing around the world. Bill specifically on isis isil daesh, Ashton Carter in this appearance from two days ago talking with senator john mccain about what the strategy is. This clip, chris, is getting a lot of attention and not for the right reasons. Watch it. I think the, u u, strategy connects ends and means and our respect to isil needs to be its lasting defeat. I say lasting, because it is important that when they get defeated they stay defeated. And, that is why it is important that we have, those on the ground there who will insure that they stay defeated once defeated. Bill so you got that . That is really smart guy. Senator mccain was shaking his head at the end of that. What you find is you find people doing flips to explain that. Why is that . It is awfully hard to explain especially when you have somebody like King Abdullah that comes out and says, we will fight until we are out of ammunition and out of fuel. We will fight and we will kill them. We will kill them wherever they are. They speak with that sort of certainty. Look, lets remember, in hour after hour of congressional testimony, even the best, even the smoothist will have unsmooth word salad kind of moments. The problem for the administration is, it is not what is in one sound bite. It is that the sound bite speaks to a larger confusion about Foreign Policy around the globe and what happens and what we continue to see happening with this administration is yemen is model for syria and iraq. Wait, never mind, yemen is a disaster and well have a new model. We say progress in ukraine is encouraging and russians are being pushed back. Now well start dumping ammunition and weapons into eastern europe. We see theser assaults and turns from the somer assaults and turns from the administration. Bill put libya in that. New cases reported at a Daycare Center outside of chicago. Five babies are diagnose with the highly contagious disease an less than a year old. The source of the infection not yet known. Health Officials Say we can expect even more cases. Garrett tenney joining us live from chicago. Tell me first about the situation at this particular Day Care Center. Reporter jamie, on sunday Health Officials received word that two infants were treated at local hospital with fever and rash they both attended the Kindercare Learning Center just outside of chicago. Then on tuesday dare care staff passed word three additional children had also come down with symptoms. Lab tests for the first child came back that afternoon positive for measles. In the second child came being bat next day as well. The daycare has received a precautionary deep clean. Even though unvaccinated children are being told to stay home at least next 21 days health Officials Say more cases are expected because of how highly contagious measles is. Lab results for the remaining three children, all under the age of one are expected to come back this morning jamie. One thing you didnt mention i have heard these babies are too young to be vaccinated. As you said they havent been. Is there any reason to believe there is connection to the outbreak at disneyland or is it not connected and because theyre not vaccinated . Officials have said there is no reason right now to believe that is the case but it is an Ongoing Investigation but that is really a key difference there, the age of the children. These children were all too young to be vaccinated. Doctors typically recommend children receive that 12 and 15 months years old. Officials believe likely the same case for a oneyearold baby in new jersey who is also suspected of contracting the disease. That child now recovered but investigators are looking into how that occurred and if any others were exposed ands nationwide, the cdc says there are now more than 100 cases of measles in 14 states. All reduction in Unemployment Rate has basically come from people desserting the labor force. They havent found jobs. They left the labor force. Look at areas like black teenage unemployment. It is crazy terrible. Black teenage employment as share of their population is 19 . That is down from 30 when Clinton Left Office this. Has been a very very long, deep recession, depression. And the recovery is the worst in the history of the u. S. Bill let me give you headline from app and you react to this. Sure. Bill u. S. Employers add 257,000 jobs wages rose and americans sought work in january. Is that good news or not . It is better than it has been for the last several months. It is. Then they revised last couple months where they raised number of jobs up past couple months, previous ones. That is good news compared to the history. But history of these employment numbers is terrible, bill. When we were in office in the 80s, we were creating way more jobs than this guy is creating. It was much better for the economy. This is really a terrible recovery but less terrible this month than it was last month before. How is that for putting it . Bill slightly better. All right. What clifton argues you need to create 10 million new jobs. Thats right. Bill in order to restore the middle class. Exactly. He is exactly right. His point is totally, totally correct. I just think he is brilliant on that. If you look at employment to population, which is what he did, that is exactly the correct way to look at it. And that number fell sharply in the great recession. Way down, it was 64 1 2 when Clinton Left Office t fell to 59 , 58 1 2 and now it is just a little bit over 59 for the last five, six years. This is a tragic nonrecovery. Clifton is exactly correct. Bill you say you dont like the use of the word lie. I dont. That is not a nice word. Bill used it in the piece once or twice. The reason he used that, art i think this is very important to understand, he thinks washington our politicians want americans to believe that things are getting better. And so does wall street so they stay in the market. Why is that a lie . Well, you know ive been in the white house myself back years ago and been involved with this, they all want to do that bill. They want to put sunny side the twist, spin on everything. If you called every politicians comments a lie you would only use the every other word talking about them. What happens here is what everyone else has done. They have looked at Unemployment Rate. There is no change in the way we calculate the Unemployment Rate to my knowledge and they always tout the best number they can. Bill, jim clifton is correct the correct number to use is employment as a share of population, which includes people that are so discouraged they leave the labor force. They should be included as part of the Unemployment Rate the way jim clifton does it. When you say lie, it just turns the conversation into a battle. Bill one more point on that. Bill he says the unemployment number in america without question, is the most important number you will find across the country because people need a job and they need to know they have a good job. A louisiana newspaper finding discrepancies in williamss posthurricane katrina reporting including his claim he saw a body floating by his hotel in the french quart. I switched to being journalist from being an attorney. In either profession i was under impression were held to the highest standard of truth. That were actually supposed to search for the truth. How significant is this, and now a new allegation for Brian Williams . Let me say first. I went to new orleans with Brian Williams in the wake of katrina while reporting on book. Showed me where he saw the first dead body. He told me seeing a body floating by. Spent night in superdome without power. Went to new orleans, eight or nine times. When you acknowledge essentially told a law. The story which he apologized for having his copter hit in iraq when in fact it was another helicopter that took the rocketpropelled grenade. It opens everything up so everybody looks back at our record and raise questions and scrutinized and youre never seen in the same light again. Jamie it is interesting, nbc sources, network is standing by him. Lets listen to one of the examples of him talking about his katrina experience. I want to get your take. When you look out of your hotel room, window in the French Quarter and watch a man float by face down, when, when you see bodies that you last saw in bandeache, indonesia, and swore to yourself you would never see in your country, i beat that storm the i was there before it arrived. I rode it out with people who later died in the superdome. That statement is pretty dramatic. So you said you were with him. You saw where he stayed. You believe the story about seeing a dead man floating at katrina . I have no way of knowing whether that particular anecdote is true or whether he embelled it. He told it to me. I was not there at the storm. He was treated like hero there, he went some times he was emotionally invested in that story. Some of this may be piling on by this new orleans newspaper that is raising discrepancy i dont think it is proven that he didnt have dysentery which he said he contracted on first trip after the storm. I do think nbc with its no comment stance almost has to stand behind Brian Williams because he is the face of the news division. He is the toprated anchor. He is a bankable star. Almost too big to fail. Jamie show me the money situation . What would it be like if it was anybody else . Well that is excellent question, jamie, if some other nbc correspondent told on air story about being hit in chopper and turned out that was not the chopper that person would be lucky to get off reprimand. That person would be lucky to keep his job. Brian williams, i do think we have to say in the last 10 years as anchor has a pretty solid track record. Not like there is a hit here. At the same time it is inexplicable to me hard to fathom why he would embellish and fabricate frankly the story about his copper being copter being hit it was enough to show that he went after invasion of iraq and was in an army chopper and grounded by a sandstorm. That is a pretty dramatic story. Why he felt the need or, he blames the fog of memory. I dont think many people are buying that. Why he felt the need to make the story even better does raise troubling question. Jamie he says he misremembered. Veterans have now spoken out. Well have more later in the show. How many were there in october 2000 when al qaeda bombed uss cole. Zero. What about 1998 when they bombed our embassies. The facility was not opened before 2 00 two, senator. 1992 First World Trade Center bombing. Same answer. 1983 when hezbollah bombed our embassy and Marine Barracks in lebanon . Answer is zero. Correct. Islamic terrorists dont need an excuse to attack the United States. They dont attack us for what they do. They attack us for who we are. It is not a security decision. It is political decision based on promise president made on his campaign. To say that its a security decision based on propaganda value our enemies get from us is pretext t to justify a political decision. It was tremendously effective if his goal was headlines and airtime obviously were giving attention to it. Weighs giving i think words to a sentiment Many Americans feel about wanting to be sure that anyone that is not at, released from Guantanamo Bay is not going back to the theater of war and there is great concern were seeing that recently we saw a situation where one person who had been released was in contact with some of the terrorists. But i think that his goal was the theatrics. Jamie really . Youre saying it is words and not facts . That is common knowledge. Well the facts are that if you talk to the Supreme Court they say you cant have unlimited detention of anybody. Obviously it is in violation of the geneva convention. Obviously you have a situation where we dont try people and people who have been tried, in the civilian courts in this country, terrorists, we have a better record of conviction there. We can, also house people more cheaply than we do than at Guantanamo Bay and as Defense Intelligence departments pointed out, it is recruiting tool for jihadists. Jamie i will come back to you whether or not you want them in your neighborhood. Guy, what did you think . Three quick points on this. First of all, seems to me that successful terrorist attacks against the west are a far more potent recruiting tool than effective american counterterrorism policies. Secondly, as we just heard from the senator i think very wellstated, by senator cotton the terrorists, jihadists did not node an excuse on 9 11 to kill 3,000 americans. Guantanamo bay was not open on 9 11. And i think that really is the transition into my final point which is the broader suggestion that we ought to really pay close attention to terrorists propaganda about what their most recent justification might be i think that is such a mistake because before 9 11, it was what . Our support for israel. Our presence in the middle east. Then it became gitmo and enhanced interrogation techniques. Now it is the Drone Program an killing al qaeda leadership. And cartoons, for crying out loud . We should not be manipulated by the evershifting pretexts of killers. Jamie let me go back to you for a second juan. You said its a recruiting tool Guantanamo Bay. Why is it a recruiting tool . What is the difference between that and any other location where we might house terrorists . Well, first thing is, clearly we would have trials and we would put them in jail under our laws, our constitution, our laws that say that people who committees kind of crimes, these terrorist acts, deserve to be punished. Jamie has it worked . We have got convictions which you point out but i think we have not failed so far in convicting terrorists in our civilian courts. Jamie how how is that deterrent, juan . Bless help me understand how its a deterrent. What do you mean, put somebody in max security forever . Obviously we put them away forever. I guess you could execute them. Im saying we have a great record there. On the contrary, when you look at guantanamo, when youre looking at is a situation where people say, exactly what are you doing there . Youre just Holding People for an unlimited amount of time without charges, without trials. You know, it is, guy was talking about you know there are other reasons that bad people do, terrorists do these things. I would agree. They dont need it but what were saying is, i think that is what the intelligence and the defense people are saying is, why give them another reason, why give them another tool in terms of their social Media Campaign to recruit young people. Jamie well, let me ask you guy, what do you think about the performance of the undersecretary . His responses. They were accurate, right. Tom cotton had a point to make. There is no response he could have given zero zero zero. Juan can call it theatrics i think it was very effective making the point very forcefully the senator wanted to. I really think it is such a mistake to approach the International War against terrorists as a Law Enforcement proposition. I dont think that works. I know juan says it has been very effective but does know just two weeks ago the Obama Administration released early by the way, from federal prison, a terrorist, an al qaeda sleeper operative who was convicted in federal court, sent to prison. They released him early two weeks ago. A few years back, there was a jury that convicted a very hardened al qaeda bomber on just one of nearly of 100 counts brought against him in federal court because of our rules of evidence in federal court. Unless we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the crusades and inquisition, people committed terrible deed in the name of christ. President is as weak a historian as a president and as weak a theologian. The crusades did not follow word of jesus christ. They were in totally contrary to the word of jesus christ. What they are doing some of it is contrary to the word of mohammed, like burning people. Some of it is isnt. Killing in the fame of faith going to heaven if you kill in the fame name of the faith. Early mohammed was very, very peaceful. Late mohammed was a warrior, led wars. Jesus christ said forgive those who kill you. So when we see christian atrocities of a thousand years ago,hundred years ago, were seeing people acting contrary to the word of their founders. When we see muslim atrocities today, theyre are word in the koran, nobody wants to face this, that support some of what theyre doing, not burning but beheading. So, what he is missing as a historian is, the protestant reformation, catholic counter reformation, the emergence of reform jude dayism. There are Orthodox Jews that conflict with the other jews but they dont kill them. There are strict catholics that conflict with less strict catholics but they dont stone them or behead them. There is no stoning for adult terry in christianity or judaism. Bill i know youre not a doctor. I will spare you the psychoanalysis. A little bit of a historian and theologian. Bill why are you comparing christianity to isis . Of 800 years ago. How about the crusades in part were reaction to similar atrocities on part of muslims who invaded spain invaded europe, took over a good deal of the middle east. Sometimes for the better. A gathering on the holy day for people to remember and unite around the cause which is stamping out isis. They call it something else. An acronym dash they call it because that is the word for Islamic State in syria in arabic. If they tip their hand on the government side about how long they can maintain the offensive posture against targets in iraq and syria . They have not been specific about that. They need american support and they have gotten it. I mention there were 12 jordan f16s and supported by almost the same number of american jets and refueling and awax planes. We are getting a lot of veterans to weigh in on this. What is your view based on what you heard . I respect the work Brian Williams made for that. I commend him. Everybody deserves Second Chances but in 2004 his Second Chance came when he could have stopped the story in the track but instead he kept it going and went on the David Letterman in 2013 even saying he was in the helicopter that was hit and did a hard landing and felt his life was in danger and he almost died. That is embellishing and stealing another soldiers story. The event happened but Brian Williams wasnt a part of it he talked about the fog of war. You admit it is real. It absolutely is. Is it possible to confuse them . Some my perspective, you have the friendly situation and enemy situation and you are flying and talking on a handful of radios and when you add enemy fire in the mix it is a high stress environment and that can cause the details to be muddled. But when your aircraft is hit by enemy fire and someone is trying to take your life and kill you you dont forget it. There is no aftermath of you and the pilot saying did that happen . Did he get hit by enemy fire . No you remember it. And as a passenger in the back of the helicopter, unless he was plugged into the cockpit, he likely never knew unless the pilot did an invasive maneuver. An rpg you would know but not a small air craft. Williams said you were absolutely right and i was wrong. Based on this first two answers you dont accept his apology, do you . I think he deserves the give the American People more than that. They trusted him as a journalist and it is part of the characteristics to have integrity. Do you report the truth in stories on job applications . That is something you have to have as integrity and i think it is lost. This isnt a fog of war story. This is at the time as a combat journalist who stole another soldiers story for a Career Advancement or bragging rights or whatever it doesnt matter. He used someone elses story for another benefit. This was the early days and hours of the war in iraq. And he reported on the ground we learned the plane ahead of us was almost blown out of the sky. I guess it is no surprise the defense is going to try to get the client acquitted, but a change of venue who wouldnt know about the movie . Of course it is a national movie. Change of venue is usually intense reporting in a particular location. As you said the judge denied it and now all they have is they can raise it on appeal. They moved for an adjournment as well. It was denied and they are picking the jury now. Chad is this a case where you would advise a client to take a plea . It depends. Ptsd is real. Both the veterans instruction and the psychoe atric community started believing it in about 30 years ago. You cannot sell the client down the line if there is a ptsd defense here and i think they are making a good case for worked hard to provide that. What does it take to prove that chad . Ptsd they will have to show because of the stress he went through as a veteran of the war that at the time he committed this murder he was not aware what he was doing and didnt understand it was wrong. That is the tough verdict. In texas we have one of the tough toughest burdens in the country. It is a very, very real defense. And people disregard it because they think they are gaming the system but it isnt. This is a real deal. There are many many people coming back from the military duty abroad that have problems and some are this severe and result in these criminal acts. I will just weigh in an as opportunity and someone who covers the military. There is no question it exist. How could you go and not be affected . But the facts are both of them were killed. Could his prior history be relevant to the case . What can the defense have excluded where their suspect is concern . What they did, you know they are fighting hard to keep out a video of an interview done by a member of the texas rangers. And in that video, it is interesting because to chads point at first the defense was raising issues like i didnt understand right from wrong, i thought if i didnt kill these two people i would be kill. That is classic insanity clauses but then the sheriff said wait a minute, isnt it true this is later in the interview, you knew right from wrong and he admitted yes so that is a big thing. It is an open question whether that is ruled ad misciblemissable. What is the right ruling . I am saying it is admissible. Unless they can show a Fourth Amendment violation it is ad ms. Missable. Do you have a ruling the movie will not interfere with where it is being held . What do you think . The trial is moving forward.
