>> no, it wasn't. it was also disingenuous. he was handed a trillion dollar deficit, actually, it was about for this fiscal year was about $250 billion when he came into office. he passed a $787 billion stimulus bill, a only new bus bill, $30 billion expansion of the s-chip and spent $350 billion that had been authorized last fall in the bank rescue package, so it's disingenuous, and it was unnecessary. he had a chance to transsent partisanship and he didn't do it. and the five concerns that people had about the bill, like will illegal aliens get benefits, he started off by saying, these are lies, distortions and completely untrue and it was a gra tuous attack. people have concerned about whether illegal aliens will get benefits. but it has no process for verification. and they proposed an amendment in the committee that said you have to show proof of citizenship in order to get the benefits and it was voted down on a party line vote with the democrats opposing it and republicans supporting it. of course there are legitimate concerns if you say they're not going to get it but no verification process. >> and the latest pew pole showing only 30% of seniors supporting health care reform and 54% are opposed to it. and the president talked about a $900 billion price tag over ten years, calling out the afghanistan war and the war in iraq for these bills. and he says he'll have to cut from medicaid to pay for that, that's not going to fly with seniors. >> $177 billion, a 20% cut in what's call medicare advantage, a insurance program in which seniors can put in some of their own money with the federal government and get supplemental coverage. basic medicare provides a benefit of value about 85% of what a private benefit would provide, so this is a way for people to get additional coverage, particularly preventive care and early screening and a 20% cut in the program guts it. that's why the president had a clever change of language. if you like what you've got, you get to keep it. and on wednesday night he said, you're not gonna be forced or required to change your coverage. of course, if the program goes away, you won't have that coverage and so you're right, you won't be able to keep it. so very artful language, but it was a missed hunt. he had -- a missed opportunity. a instead, particularly in the chamber, he aimed angry and bitter comments at the republicans in a way that was almost calculated to provoke them and to discourage them from working with him. i took this speech as a message of, i'm gonna get a bill and with democrats only and that's my message to the democrats side, don't worry about the republicans, i'll give them rhetorical lip service, but forget it republicans, you're not part of this process. >> i'm going to ask you to take off your political hat and put on your advisory hat and pretent -- pretend that you're his advisor that night. putting politics aside, did the president do what he needed to do on president wednesday night to try to sell the american people on health care? what would you have said to him when he came off stage? >> that's not the right moment. the right moment is when you're staffing that speech. it was seen by every senior advisor in the white house, they probably saw several drafts. and that's the point when they should say, mr. president, shouldn't we have a tone that is one of bipartisanship and reconciliation? this language where we call these lies and distortions, can't we say i've heard the concerns of americans and rather than taking the tone, by god, it's my way or the highway, which is exactly what we got. >> that's karl rove, he knows the white house just about better than anyone. and could the president's renewed fight against al qaeda put him at odds with his own party? [coughing] excuse me. >> two interesting developments happened there on campus. one is that she birdie the lab at 10:00, at 1:00, someone set off the fire alarm. we don't know anything more. that evacuates the building. and number two, a professor before this girl was ever reported missing, canceled a glass that she was supposed to attend. he now understand suspicion. >> and the one person who is not under suspicion is her fiance. often when someone goes missing they look at the husband, the boyfriend, the fiance. he was in manhattan and very, very alarmed when he couldn't get ahold of her and raced to new haven to try to find her. he has been part of leading the search for her all around campus. he is said to be devastated. the wedding is supposed to happen tomorrow morning. so this is very mysterious what has happened to annie le and hopefully they'll make in developments and headway there. >> excuse me, i was choking there. and she wrote a paper about crime in new haven and how to protect yourself against the possibility of abduction or kidnapping or perpetrators. and the signs to look out for should you be attacked. and one of the things she talks about is look at shoes, be aware of little elements you can later tell investigators. sad if this ends up being more tragic than we know right now, how fortuitous that could have been. >> and avoid portraying yourself as a potential victim. she wrote about dangerous confrontation that is still happen in the new haven community. we all hope it has a happy ending. the 4'11", 90-pound annie le still missing a day before her wedding. >> and we begin with afghanistan's presidential elections. today, election officials are set to release the preliminary results. and it could determine whether afghani president hamid karzai has enough votes to avoid a runoff. an u.n.-backed commission looks into hundreds of complaints of election fraud. results will not be certified until the investigation is complete. a march to protest big government is under way in washington. people are gathering at the nation's capital to protest big government and high taxes. including members of the tea party express. the bus tour is making its final stop in d.c. as part of the 35-city tour. china is blasting president obama for slapping tariffs on chinese tires. beijing called it an act of protectionism. and the cheap chinese tires are hurting the tire industry. and tires from china cost more. let's go over to dave for sports. >> a big night in hoops. he may be the greatest basketball player of all time, at least in my opinion. now, michael jordan has taken his place in the hall of fame, the six-time nba champion laughed and cried during his speech and praised his teammates and adversaries and talked about everybody in that crowd. he talked about those who challenged him over the years, as well. >> my competitive nature has gone a long ways from the first time i picked up any sport, baseball, football, ran track, basketball, anything in this class, i played it. when you think about -- they started inspiring me. that fire started with my parents. as i moved on in my career, people added wood to that fire. >> and some say they should retire 23 across the league. >> and rutgers women's coach and former jazz guard john stockton and congratulations to derek jeter, 2723 hits, he passes lou gehrig for the all-time yankees record for hits, that's been there 72 years. quite a record! >> and i don't know if anyone watched the ceremony. michael jordan, there's video of him schooling someone else on the court. he's still got it. >> he looks good. >> and you know what else he has, he has your suit. >> he wears it a little better than i do, though. >> and michael has far more style than i'll ever have. i think it was more of a gray silver. >> you might be on to something. >> a very nice start, especially around the south, at least temperaturewise. and there's rain across the south, cool back across the rockies, temps well below average for your day today. look at the satellite radar picture, the northeast after a miserable day yesterday, today will be improved, heavy rain in the boston area will clear out. but it's gonna be spotty for your day today. tomorrow will improve a lot across much of the northeast. so good end to the weekend. across the south is where all the problems are. a big disturbance in across parts of central gulf will continue to bring heavy rain across much of florida, in around the southern halves of alabama and mississippi, maybe into southern georgia. atlanta, i think you're fine. across texas, that's where we have the heavier rain, across the red river valley today and tomorrow. and that will bring a little bit of flooding, unfortunately. southern texas desperately needs the rain, northern texas not so much. heavy rain in oklahoma and kansas, and rain across western south dakota. and that much, it could be severe as the day heats up. across areas of the west, rain showers across northern california and this afternoon could be seeing some thunderstorms bringing some dry thunderstorms and dry lightning could cause some fires in across northern california and southern oregon. all right, dave, looks like you have exciting home depot stuff going on. >> oh, rick, i do! i know you want to come in here and get right in here. thank you, chief. what we're talking about is dryer plug-ins today. what we're doing is going from a three-prong to a four-prong plug. and i've got to ask you, plain and simple, why does it matter to me? i got a dryer and plugged it in. >> and that's most people. they haven't paid much attention to the plug they have. if you're moving from a house, if you've got a three-plug like this... >> this is older? >> yes. and if you're moving into a house built after 1999 or rewired, code requires that you have a four-prong. so you have to remove the three-prong and replace it with one of these four-prongs. >> why four prongs? >> it's safer. they've added an extra ground this makes it a little bit safer. so let's talk about how you do that. first off, when you come to the back of the dryer, you'll find one of these, a cover plate, take it off. and then also, real quick, i'll mention what else you'll find is this stress-relief bracket. let me show you on here. >> i'm worried about getting electrocuted. >> just unplug the dryer. >> obviously you have to do that. >> and these little prongs go into this hole and hold this in place, so the weight of the court doesn't pull on the connections and if you move the dryer, you don't have to worry about any damage in there. and i took some of the screws off. you have three cords, three connections. the black and red, the active ones, and the neutral in the middle. up here in the corner, this is installed at the factory, this is a neutral-to-ground connection. this will move. i'll show you on the other dryer. it's going to move and connect in the the middle. this is actually the new cord. you can see i've already installed it. you would slide it into that hole. let me turn it around. the green is actually going to go into the place of where that other cable was that i just told you about. the black is gonna go to the left, right here. the white goes in the middle, along with that neutra neutral-to-ground wire in the corner before. so you're going to detach it from here, move it and add it to the white. they both connect in the middle, and then the red connects on the right. and then you would simply add the bracket back in. and these slip in there and screw on you to the cord and you replace the cover plate. it's a very simple project. so take the other one out and replace it with this one. >> and most importantly, you don't have to buy a new dryer. people might move in and think i need a new dryer. >> absolutely not. and dryers don't even come with one of these. so if you're moving into a house, you have to install one of these. >> i do remember buying one of those from home depot. >> and you have to connect it in the back. >> all you need is this part? >> that's all you need. and it's very, very easy. and they're color-coded so you can't go wrong. >> it sounds simple and i thought it would be confusing. can you go look for blago for us? >> he could be in the dryer! are you seeing increased casualties? overall, describe how this war has progressed in the last couple of weeks. >> clayton, there's no doubt that there's an increase in casualties over the time we were here last year. obviously for the reason they're going into the taliban strongholds that have been theirs to control ever since 2002. what you're now seeing is taking the fight to the taliban literally across the full length of the country from -- all the way to the pakistani border. and at the same time the taliban is being pressured inside pakistan in places like waziristan and the tribal areas. and the casualty rates will probably go up a little bit more because they're being pressed. but they don't want to have a gunfight with any of the u.s. conventional forces out here. the big challenge continues to be training sufficient numbers of afghans to take responsibility for their own future. >> absolutely one of the most important points and getting rid of the opium fields as well. colonel north, live in kabul, unbelievable footage this morning. colonel, stay safe, thanks so much. should you praise your children as much as possible because it helps boost the self-esteem, or are you doing them a disservice? >> absolutely.
