you want to start things off with the news? >> definitely. the syria president making an emergency address to the nation and once again refusing to step down from power as violent government crackdowns continue in the streets of syria, the u.s. reportedly looking into whether war crimes could be filed against the president as an alternate way to stop the violence against anti-government protesters. estimates are more than 1300 dead in those crackdowns. the opposition leaders are talking about the numbers of people that have been killed at this point. numbers go as high as 14,000. 10,000 people arrested since the syrian government started crushing the protest movements in march. and also, nato now admitting that it likely bombed the libyan apartment on sunday. two children were among those who were killed in this blast. nato says the rocket was headed for another target and went astray. they will offer amendments to defund america's mission in libya. a weekend bloodbath on long island. police releasing surveillance images of the suspect that they say shot four people to death inside a medford, new york pharmacy during an apparent robbery yesterday. the youngest victim is a 17-year-old employee. this young girlfriend jennifer, the high school senior was supposed to graduate from high school this week. right now there's a massive man hunt under way for this guy. the defense resumed its case today in the casey anthony murder trial. on saturday, a forensics expert called the autopsy done on caylee anthony's body "shoddy." he also said that the duct tape found on caylee's mouth was not taped on until after her body decomposed. which raises a lot of questions about all of the timeline in this story. prosecutors believe that anthony killed her daughter by suffocating her with duct tape. anthony could get the death penalty if she's convicted in that crime. and the miss u.s.a. pageant came to the bff's. miss u.s.a. 2011 is miss california. >> the 21-year-old of los angeles crowned the winner. the auburn haired beauty was actually born and raised in new jersey, of course. wrfd all those beauties come from. four years ago, she went to california and will represent the united states in the miss universe pageant come september. >> that will be in brazil like the olympics and the world cup. just stay there and take it all in over in brazil. and drill for oil. let's talk about governor perry because i must have seen the poll, "the wall street journal", nbc poll that showed that only 45% of republicans are happy with the current g.o.p. field for president unlike four years ago where at this point, 73% were pleased with the field. he might be seeing opportunity. >> absolutely, brian, and in fact, there's a story in "the wall street journal" this morning that talks about how mr. perry's aides are quietly behind the scenes looking into filing deadlines in iowa, nevada, south carolina and new hampshire as well. >> not so quiet, i guess. >> i'm reading all about it in the paper today. apparently, they're trying to figure out whether or not he can get in on the straw poll in iowa in august. now, this past weekend, he was down in new orleans at the republican leadership conference and just listen to this. this sounds like a guy who is going to be running for president. >> that mix of arrogance and audacity that guys, the obama administration is an afront to every freedom loving american and a threat to every private sector job in this country. they clearly think that they know best and our loudest opponents on the left are never going to like us. let's stop trying to curry favor with them. let's stop this american downward spiral. we're doing this and it's happening because of too much spending, too much interfering and too much apologizing. >> ok. >> question is when? when will he decide? his folks are saying that it needs to happen sooner rather than later although some of the estimates go all the way into the fall, you know. >> this year or next year? >> of this year and dana perino is talking about it. we'll talk to her later about this as well basically saying that organization is important and he needs to get that in here. he needs for the rest of the nation to really get to know him as well. >> here's the problem, many people say, he's talking about succession. he wants to head up that and he was for al gore in 1988. >> he was a democrat. >> he was a democrat for a while and, you know, on the positive side, he added 200,000 jobs in this past year, second to no one in this country but the negative part is he's running at a deficit in texas, has to make some serious budget cuts. >> the question as to whether he'll tip the hat and throw his whole hat and i would imagine a couple of hats -- >> we get it. >> into the ring, whether or not they've got the money available because, you know, he's going to have to hit up a lot of donors. you can see where the crowd is chanting, "run, rick, run" and will there be time left to actually campaign? if you want to be president -- >> who does he impact, you know? clearly he has an impact on mitt romney and clearly an impact on sarah palin and on john huntsman when you look at the folks that have been able to get some enthusiasm out there. it will be very interesting. >> he talked about values and social issues which is something we have not heard of this time around. let's talk about the secretary of defense gates. he's on this truth telling tour called the end of a fabulous, incredible, maybe unparalleled career in terms of what he's done as president serving eight separate presidents. as he does that, he's revealing some other things, for example, what he'd like to see happen in afghanistan and who he's talking about right now, the u.s. is admitting to be talking to the taliban. listen. >> who represents mullah omar. who really represents the taliban? we don't want to end up having a conversation at some point with somebody who is basically a freelancer. i think that the taliban have to feel themselves under military pressure. and begin to believe that they can't win before they're willing to have a serious conversation. >> ok. so he's admitting that we're talking some level of taliban although we're not positive that this guy is a direct conduit to mullah omar. by the way, which is mullah omar 10 years later still out there somewhere. >> you mean still alive with his one eye? >> yeah. >> all right -- >> i think more of the still alive business. >> yeah. >> by the way, secretary gates, calm down, please. i mean, can you be more relaxed? >> what's that? >> he looks exhausted. >> he's talking a lot and he's saying some very interesting things. he was talking about, basically, do we know our role in the world? i've never been in this situation all my years in leadership where i felt that we didn't necessarily have the resources and the commitment to be the superpower of the world and it's very interesting, you know, he talked about republicans, not necessarily being 100% committed to taking on, you know, assertive american role in the world but also, he left the door open to having that be a criticism of this administration as well i thought which was very interesting. >> if you're looking -- you're flipping it over and seeing it goes beyond that because he's trying to straddle the fence and not have people say he's a republican or democrat. here's secretary gates. when everybody is saying pull out of afghanistan, we've done enough there. he says think about the other thing. think about the price of failure. listen. >> i know the american people are tired of war but look, the reality is the united states had a very limited commitment in afghanistan until well into 2008. and we didn't have the right strategy and the right resources for this conflict and a lot of resources, those needed to do the job until the late summer of 2010. but the reality is we won the first afghan war in 2001-2002. we were diverted by iraq. and we basically neglected afghanistan for several years. >> he also says the price of failure, remember, we left in 1989. remember what happened on 9/11. that's the price of failure. if we pull out too soon, he understands it. the price of failure could be extremely steep especially when you look at how close we are to achieving our goals. >> sure. one of the goals of chris wallace who hosts "fox news sunday" was once upon a time, about half a year ago, he crossed paths with jon stewart and got jon stewart say sure, i'll be on your sunday morning show. well, they made some calls. nope, busy. nope, busy. nope, busy. until this past weekend where mr. stewart sat down in one of the studios in washington, d.c. and taped an appearance on "fox news sunday" where extraordinarily enough, keep in mind, this guy, mr. stewart, a comedian with certainly some political leanings, was a big supporter of barack obama says that he is disappointed in the guy he helped get elected. >> are you disappointed in barack obama as president? >> yes. i think i am. >> do you think he's lived up to his promise to fix the economy? >> no, i don't know the kind of sway that a president can have on the economy but do i believe that he's lived up to the promises? no. he came in and said, you can't expect to have a different result with the same people. that was in many ways his seminole campaign focus and all i see as far as economic stewardship are the guys that got us into this mess in the first place. >> i don't know -- what he says there really makes no sense because first of all, he basically says i'm not happy with the job the president is doing. but i don't know how much any president can affect the economy which is a legitimate question about how much control the president has over any economy but he says all i see is the same folks are driving the bus which is not true. he lost several of the economic advisors. >> everybody has left. >> orchestrated the first initial attempts of the obama administration are all gone. so i'm want sure who he's talking about that he feels like the same people are at the helm unless he's talking about goldman-sachs and wall street but it's interesting. >> chris wallace was great because jon stewart was getting ticked off and chris wallace would keep moving and changing the subject just saying look what you said about fox. compared with what you said about "the new york times." look what they're doing. and at one point, he just said i think you're insane and the other thing that was to chris wallace which we know is true. and the other thing is i thought it was interesting, when is the last republican you voted for? bush 41. why? i'm against little people in helmets. >> meaning dukakis. i thought it was really interesting, intriguing and well researched. i was very proud of chris wallace. >> he did a good job. straight ahead on this monday program, did you know the administration announced the end to obama care waivers? washington insiders want to weigh in on this. a democratic strategist and tyler is here, the name of his group is called the prosper group. how strong of a candidate is governor perry? >> he is a strong candidate. republican primary voters are really looking for a candidate that meet two criteria. do they share values and do they have viability? right now, they're looking at a fill that viable candidates don't necessarily share their values and a viable candidate are not necessarily viable. rick perry meets both criteria. he's a strong conservative and he has 10 years of history of pushing tort reform and he has a national network that he can tap into. he'll be an immediate contender for the republican primary. >> it might be interesting knowing that he was a democrat for a while and even supported al gore for president in 1998. does that mean he'll get democratic support? >> i don't know about that. i agree, he's a strong candidate for the republican primary. we have to remember that this isn't just about the republican primary but about voters overall and i think voters overall are going to disagree with a lot that rick pry stands for. he may have this swagger that is attractive to republican primary voters but this hot dogging attitude is not what the people around the country want to see going forward in terms of leading and really unifying the country. i mean, you're talking about a governor who said that texas should succeed from the country. while that may play in texas and some primary voters may find that attractive, what do people in the other 49 states going to think about electing somebody who feels that way about their state? >> i'm sure he'll be against succession if he becomes president. >> he'll flip-flop. >> when we talk about economy, the economy, tyler, this is a pretty strong move. he can say in my state, i added 265,000 jobs. all other states combined over the last year, 266,000, that's something to run on. >> absolutely. perry has presided over one of the strongest economies in the united states during the downturn. and i think that is -- pardon me, i think that's a record he can run on and like i said before, it's about values and viability and i think that his economic record and some of the other records that he has for tort reform and other things will allow him to run in a very strong position. it's really hard to say anything bad about this guy. >> i'll tell you, it's going to come down to july 15th when everybody reveals how much money they earned. if it looks like romney has destroyed the field in terms of money they've gotten from donors, he might stay out but if everyone is kind of close, they say governor perry might say i got a shot at this and would immediately become a number two according to some. >> i think when we talk about rick perry's strength, we also have to put in the context of the weakness of the field. i mean, you were talking about this earlier about how many people -- how many republicans are dissatisfied with the field now versus in previous elections and it's the first time in 40 years that there's no clear republican frontrunner so it's no surprise that there are people still trying to think about whether or not they want to jump in even though it is a little bit late. perry seems to be doing the right thing by thinking about the logistics but nonetheless, this is the sign of a weak field as much if not more of a sign about rick perry. >> possibly. we know that. 45% say i'm excited about the field as opposed to four years ago when 73% were excited about the g.o.p. field. we'll see if it gets more exciting after that great speech over the weekend by rick perry. thanks for the debate. >> thank you. >> i'll move ahead. while you were out partying friday night and i'm talking to martha and steve directly, the administration quietly announced the end to obama care waivers. what's the deal with that? [ female announcer ] only flood insurance covers floods. for a free brochure, call the number on your screen. >> all right. some quick headlines now beginning with the fox news alert. new video coming into us right now from st. louis, missouri. firefighters battling an intense chemical fire on the city's west side. several nearby homes have been evacuated. and interstate 44 shut down. no word yet on any injuries. and four days after he said he was quitting congress because of his sexting scandal, new york democrat anthony weiner hasn't submitted his letter of resignation yet to house speaker john boehner. weiner's spokesman says his offices in new york and washington will be open and fully staffed today. that's weird. >> all right. meanwhile, speaking of unusual, listen to this brian and tv audience, he is convicted felon who served two prison sentences for robbery. but now, robert smith is heading back to court. he's suing red lobster for discrimination. he claims the times square red lobster location refused to hire him back because of his past criminal record which is illegal technically in new york state. here with both sides, defense attorney joey jackson and former prosecutor david schwartz. joey, let's start with you. they wanted a cook, not a crook. why should they hire him? >> the answer is they should not hire him. look, the point is that new york state is an employment at will and that means you could be hired or fired for any reason or no reason as long as it's not discriminatory. to suggest at all that he deserved having a job is not a property right. you apply like everybody else applies and if the red lobster sees fit that you should be hired, that's one thing. now, this particular manager did indicate to him that we don't hire convict ted felons. was it inappropriate language? yes. however, you predicate a lawsuit against that? no way. the suit is not meritorous. >> you say he has a good case based on the law. >> yeah, joey you have to read section 296 of the executive law. >> i have -- >> the bottom line is you cannot discriminate on the basis of a prior conviction. you just cannot do that. there's no reason to do that. we have a policy of rehabilitation when you do your jail time, you're rehabilitated and you cannot discriminate in new york state based on that fact. >> let me ask you this. if red lobster knowingly hires this convicted robber, right, and he's there at red lobster and he freaks out, wouldn't red lobster be liable for that? >> that's the other problem, you also expose yourself to something called negligent hiring and what happens. in the event, you say, that he acts inappropriately and acts untoward towards the staff and goodness forbids to the patron, there's liability on the hook there. we have an executive law and a correction law. it's the policy of this state to allow people to be employed. it has to be balanced against common sense. there's exceptions in there. it says if it imposes on reasonable risk to the health and public safety of everyone else, you're not entitled to it. >> where's the health and public safety? this person is being hired in the kitchen and not hired as a cash register person. they're not being hired as a security person. that's ridiculous. and also, you can be sued for negligent hiring no matter what. it's based on the employee's performance. >> let's read the statement from red lobster they sent to us. first, our hiring standards will always follow the law. second, we have no record of ever receiving this gentleman's application. that's what red lobster says. exit question and it's a short one. will he win this case, charlie? >> absolutely not. david? >> he could absolutely win this case. i don't know what the damages are but he could win the case on liability. >> all right. he might be working here in times square before nighttime. joey jackson and david schwartz, thank you, gentlemen, for a spirited debate. what do you think in tv land? should that guy get the job? e-mail us, friends at foxnews.com. meanwhile, taking on boeing, suing to keep the company from moving to another state where they don't have to use union workers. some union people say the lawsuit is bad for the country. we'll talk to one next. and forget radical islam. shouldn't we be on the lookout for radical christians? >> are you familiar with the christian militants? >> can one say that they might possibly want to undermine this country? >> should we really be looking into that or is it just a distraction? we report, you decide on this monday. yotake any surce, and place it between the earth's justice down upon it. oh. please sign that card for carl. ♪call 1-800-steemer. and my dog bailey and i love to hang out in the kitchen. you love the aroma of beef tenderloin, don't you? you inspired a very special dog food. [ female announcer ] chef michael's canine creations. chef inspired. dog desired. >> all right. despite growing political pressure, the national labor relations board refuses to end its battle with boeing. it claims that boeing's new south carolina plant is an attack on union workers. the nlrb is now suing and while republicans want this case dropped, some democrats say boeing is to blame. listen to this from karen malony. >> i support creating great jobs and reducing unemployment across the united states. but i also believe that boeing is not above the law and as members of congress, we should not set aside the law to give preferred treatment to any one company. >> we're going to talk about what she means by that. a former chairman of the nlrb, good to have you here this morning. so the basic issue here is that they want to open this south carolina plant for boeing. it would be a huge boom to jobs in south carolina and because it's a right to work state, the contention is boeing is somehow trying to punish their workers in washington state who are unionized by moving this boeing plant or opening a boeing plant, i should say, in south carolina. why would carolyn maloney be saying that they wouldn't think they're above the law? don't they have every right to do that? >> they certainly have every right to do it and the congresswoman really should not have said that. it doesn't further debate. it doesn't help resolve the matter. members of congress should not be accusing boeing of violating the law and simply adopting a union position because it's a union position. they should avoid doing so because the union's position is inconsistent with the law. it's wisely so inconsistent with the law and it's going to chill investment in the united states. >> you know, i mean, there's been a lot of criticism of this current nlrb that they're very -- you know, that they're two sort of -- their relationship with the union puts them in position where they're making a judgment about this that is wrong in your opinion as well. so talk to me a little bit about what's going to happen from here and whether or not there's any substantiation that says boeing doesn't have the right to open a plant anywhere they want. >> boeing has a right to open their plant and augment the production anywhere it wants. the acting general counsel tried to avoidancing congressman scott's question as to how open this plant was a transfer at work. and he finally said his definition of transfer is different than the dictionary definition of transfer and merely because boeing could have expanded its unionized facility in washington state but failed to do so, that that was a transfer. and it was retaliatory because boeing wanted to protect its production against future strikes. there's simply no support in the law for what the acting general counsel has done. >> a company has the right to act in its own best interest and shareholders' best interest and in the best interest of their employees to keep their business growing and thriving. does it not? that's an outstanding picture of dana perino. look at that. >> very nice. >> looks fantastic and -- >> pictures of both of them, too. >> they're appearing together? >> on our show. >> martha will kick things off with the fox news alert. >> let's do that. new videos coming in from st. louis, missouri. right now, firefighters are battling an intense chemical fire on the city's west side. so far, more than 500 people have been forced from their nearby homes and interstate 44 remains shut down in both directions thanks to this fiery situation. no word yet on any injuries as a result of that and battling that. now, this is a terrible, terrible story. a bloodbath on long island this weekend. police have just released these surveillance images now of the suspect. who shot four people inside a medford, new york pharmacy. the youngest victim was a 17-year-old girl who was an employee there. she was a high school senior and supposed to graduate this week. right now, there is a massive man hunt under way for that gunman. and new video of massive flames in arizona forcing thousands of evacuations near the town of sierra vista. 7,000 families have already fled. 44 homes have been destroyed already. firefighters are backpeddling against a monument fire where high winds drove flames against containment lines. a fire near sante fe, new mexico is burning 3,000 acres. as of last night, that fire was 0% contained. so much of that was the last couple of weeks. they are as small as birds and bugs but they're powerful enough to spy on the taliban. what? >> right now, military scientists are perfecting the microdrones at a research facility in ohio. according to "the new york times," the drones are designed to mimic the flight patterns of birds and bugs so they can remain hidden from the enemy. wow. pentagon has some 7,000 aerial drones in service. au . >> that is cool. >> they're working around where the wright brothers came up with the idea of planes. i forgot that air base. meanwhile, dana perino is here and dana wants to talk about all things important. you did an outstanding job on the sunday show. >> thank you very much. thank for watching. >> what do you think about there's a lot of excitement and interest building in rick perry, the current governor of texas, whether or not he's going to be in it. he spoke at an event in new orleans this weekend. we'll play a little soundbite montage of him taking shots at this administration. and then see what you think. >> that mix of arrogance and audacity that guides the obama administration is an afront to every freedom loving american and a threat to every private sector job in this country. they clearly think that they know best. and our loudest opponents on the left are never going to like us so let's quit trying to curry favor with them. let's stop this american downward spiral. we're doing this. and it's happening because of too much spending, too much interfering, and too much apologizing. >> what do you think? is he running? >> well, wow, he did that without a teleprompter and everything. >> yep. >> he did. >> couple of things. there's a great saying that if you don't expect to accept an invitation, don't encourage one. in the last three weeks, i think that governor perry has been putting his toe in the water and the further he gets his foot in the water, the more people expect him to run. there's a story in t"the wall street journal" this morning talking about how people who work for him are putting out feelers to find out what it would take to be competitive in iowa and how can set up an organization that would have to spring up pretty quickly in order to take advantage of the next six weeks before the iowa straw poll. >> what are his hurdles? he brought up social issues many we haven't heard much about social issues, dana. we know, too, there was a democrat for a while and we know that the problem is he was talking about succession, he was so dissatisfied with the direction of the federal government. so these things make him somewhat vulnerable. >> i actually -- i don't think they're necessarily vulnerable. let's take those one by one. social issues, they're still important to a lot of people in america. the jobs are a number one issue but, you know, the moral direction of the country does matter and it matters to a lot of the voters that he would care about in the primary. secondly is the point about succession, i think that there are many people in the country who could understand the sentiment. i don't think he wanted texas not to be a part of the united states. you can see that in his speech, he's quite passionate about america but what he was saying is there's an economic sinking ship happening at the federal level and at the state level, we know how to manage ourselves better and we could do it better on our own. i don't think he really meant he was going to succeed from the union. >> yeah, when you talk about jobs, just look at texas. they have in the last -- in 2011, between now and back in june, 2009, texas created more jobs than almost all the other states combined. if it's all about jobs, that is pretty impressive at the top of his resume. >> right. and it doesn't just happen by magic. texas has lower regulations and has a different tax structure. some people say you could add it up and it gets to be about the same. certainly there are many businesses that have decided to flee california, for example, for texas. one example they give is carl jr.'s hamburger joint decided to leave california, move to texas and headquarter there and he spends time every day calling up businesses and trying to get them to texas so he's been a tireless advocate on behalf of the citizens of texas. now he's in his third term and his polling numbers, popularity slightly down. i think that would happen to anybody when they're in the middle of their third term. >> right. longest serving chief executive of the state. dana, do you do this? we tweet a lot. >> we're locked in a competition to see who can get more followers but president obama has millions. 8.9 million followers, i think i saw, he's going to start writing his own tweets, sending his own messages to tell everybody what he's up to. what do you think about that, dana? >> you know, fine if he he has the time, maybe we should re-examine the roles and responsibilities of the president of the united states if you have time to do that. i mean, i do agree that inauthentic tweets are really annoying and almost not even worth reading, you know, to me. >> there are a lot of them. >> yeah, there are and sometimes i just decide to unfollow those because they're not interesting. so maybe he thinks he's going to make it a little interesting. i don't think he'll probably do it that often i would assume and i'm sure people will be delighted if they get what they think is a personal message from president obama unlike when they might get from congressman weiner. >> right. yeah. >> probably different -- we're talking a totally different tweet. >> a week after a congressman lost his job over, you know, anything connected with tweeting, i think i would have waited a couple of weeks to -- >> i think because they had that big -- because of the twit pics that we've been inundated with, unfortunately. >> they had that big technology conference last week that really helped president obama become president because they utilized the internet so well and they had their finger on the pulse of social media so i think this is maybe their next step to get them to realize he's still on the cutting edge of technology but i would imagine -- i can't imagine having been at the white house and in the oval office all day long that a president would want to worry about twitter. >> be right with her. i'm just finishing up my 140 characters. >> yeah, exactly. >> meanwhile, last week, peter king of new york state kicked off hearings on capitol hill about the radicalization of some muslims in prison. and at some point during the hearings, congresswoman sheila jackson-lee talked a little bit about how christian militants might bring down the country. christian militants. dana, listen to this. >> mr. dunleavy, are you familiar with the christian militant? >> yes, i am. >> can one say that they might possibly want to undermine this country? >> we should include an analysis of how christian militants or others might bring down the country. we have to look forward, do we not? >> it starts off as a question and answer period about radicalization of muslims in prison and turns into christian militants. you got a problem with that? >> well, i think that she's right and he's right because he agreed with her that radicalization and concern about extremism and violence should be taken seriously no matter where it's coming from. >> surely. >> what the chairman is saying is we should take a look at the problem that is staring us right in the face. steve, just last friday, the pentagon, whole area around the pentagon was shut down not because of a militant christian but because somebody who appeared to be a radical muslim. now, i don't know what the case will finally bear out. i guess he's in jail and we'll find on and he'll go through his due process so she wants to spend time working on that and have her staff assigned to that, fine. but i'm glad that the chairman is focused on real problem at hand. >> and it is a problem. >> yeah, chairman king and he takes a lot of heat because of that. just because he wants to address it and debate, he's getting a lot of heat for it. as long as sheila jackson-lee is there, we'll have something exciting to talk about. >> the question of whether or not it should be broadened out and i think we can all understand addressing some -- you can address one issue in a hearing and then you can address something else down the road if that becomes necessary but, you know, to just -- it makes congress, it seems like they do that so often in terms of throwing in, you know, every single thing and try to deal with it and then nothing at all gets done. >> we have three hours we need to fill up every day. thank you, congress, for giving us plenty to talk about. >> that's for sure. >> dana, thank you very much. have a fantastic week. see you back here next monday. >> presidential advisors think the united states should take the back seat when it comes to foreign relations. is this really a good idea? joining us now is a senior fellow at the hoover institute. is that a problem, victor? >> i think it is because we haven't seen that since the 1930's. we know where it leads to. it leads to a world in chaos. as it did in the 1930's when the united states was isolationist, and for an ascendant china and japan in the 1930's and for corrupt and impotent u.n., remember the league of nations and united strong germany felt put upon so we have a lot of the examples from the 1930's, i don't think anybody in their right mind would want to go back to that paradigm. >> well, victor, then you must find it curious the fact that some have characterized our role in libya as leading from behind. and you look now projecting -- well, if that's the tact we're going to take, are we no longer a superpower? the only superpower left? >> yeah, but that's a choice on our part. if you look at any historical indicator, demography, our constitution is the most stable in the world and we don't have any of the unrest in the middle east or europe. the united states is very innovative or we have the best universities but it's a choice if we choose not to play an active role and we've made those choices in our past but it's not something that we have to do. it's a choice that retired or exhausted or it's amoral to lead but it's not something that we have to do. it's a choice on the part of this administration. >> you watch the republicans debate and talk about pulling back and not getting involved and being somewhat isolationist to the chagrin of them and others. he said i've spent the entire life with the united states as a superpower and one that had no compunction in doing what it takes to get that position. i can't imagine being part of a government that is being forced scale back our engagement with the rest of the world. he's seeing those signs now. >> absolutely. as a young boy, he saw what the world was like in world war ii before the united states exercised power and he's wise enough to know that the choice is not between bad and good but between, you know, less and good and good. so we can't be perfect. just because we're not perfect doesn't mean we're not good so we understand that if the united states doesn't lead, there will be other people in russia and turkey and china that will be regional leaders and the national order of things is chaos, not stability without the united states. >> right. and you mentioned china. we've got a graphic from the imf that shows within the next five years, it looks like china is going to surpass our gdp. >> yeah. they will in some ways but they have a rendezvous with environmental problems, with unionism, with suburban blues. their military is a fraction of our size so if they surpass us economically and then they translate that into military clout that again is a decision on the part of the united states that we should spend our capital on redistributetive mechanisms. it's in our hands and our fate to do what we want. it's written after 1946 or rome in the fifth century. >> we have to lead from the front, not the back. thank you for joining us today from princeton, new jersey. >> thank you. >> meanwhile, well done. straight ahead, the memorial at ground zero trying to raise money by charging admission. up next, the victims' families fire back. >> she was the star of "transformers" 1 and 2 but megan fox was fired from the third movie by steven spielberg himself. we know why and it ain't pretty. >> i got to get those two back together. a lot of times, things are right underneath our feet, and all we need to do is change the way we're thinking about them. a couple decades ago, we didn't even realize just how much natural gas was trapped irocks thounds of feet below us. technology has made it possible to safely unlock this cleanly burning natural gas. this deposits can provide us with fuel for a hundred years, providing energy security and economic growth all across this country. it just takes somebody having thidea, and that's where the discovery comes from. >> news by the numbers now. first 30,000, that's how many people were kicked out of beautiful people"com for being too ugly. the denmark dating site was hacked last night allowing more people to sign up. they've now been dumped. next $4.6 million, how many marilyn monroe's famous white dress sold for in an auction in southern california. the costume worn by charlie chaplain and elizabeth taylor were also auction off. that's how much the 3d action flick "green lantern" pulled in this weekend. congratulations, green people. you won the top spot. >> thanks, brian. >> the memorial museum at ground zero raising a lot of controversy over plans to charge admission while victims' families can enter free of charge, everyone else will end up paying about $20 according to the new plan. >> but there's more hope. details of the group's latest tax filings shows it has more than a half a billion dollars in the bank and 150 million in cash. why the extra fee? retired deputy of new york lost his son jimmy in the 9/11 attacks. he was part of engine 4 and he joins us live this morning. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> what do you think about this plan? >> i think it's outrageous. $60 million a year to run the museum when they took donations from young kids doing bake sales and collecting pennies and everything else and they have these high exorbitant salaries down there of everybody running it. they're making $350,000 a year to run it. that's not what a usual curator would make and i think a lot of nonprofits from 9/11 have been making money off 9/11. and i think it's outrageous. this is 95% museum down there and 5% memorial. we thought it was going to be more of a memorial and have a gift shop in there as soon as you walk in. they're selling t-shirts and everything. >> on the way in the door. >> on the way in the door. gift shops are planned in there. just like the vendors outside, they're doing the same thing as they did right now. i think it's atrocious and this isn't something the families are looking for. >> let's take look at the response from the memorial. they say while it's not our preference to charge admission to the 9/11 memorial, we must generate funding for ongoing maintenance and operations. their statement is, you know, in terms of long term, they need to keep feeding into this fund so when the initial money they've got runs out, they'll have long term way to maintain it. >> that's fine, too. just think $60 million a year for maintenance and suthat's absurd. this is the sign of a national tragedy of american history. pearl harbor doesn't charge and i think the civil war memorials don't charge. >> good point. they should be on the same model as those and what about just having, you know, suggested donation as some of the museums here in new york have, if you want to contribute something, you can. >> that would be fine if they wanted to suggest a donation. we just feel that they're pressuring these people into making it more like the museum and compared themselves to museum of natural history and metropolitan museum and it's not. it's a place where 3,000 people were murdered that day. they're coming to pay our respects. we're going to have our human remains down in the basement, human remains in the basement of this museum. we're trying to get the families to get a say in that. we have no say. the ranks aren't going to be on the wall. and it's going to be a father, michael judge is going to be the judge. we feel they haven't include the families in any of the process. they'll say they have and i'll say they're liars. >> we'll find out whether or not they do indeed charge $20, $25 a head to get into the museum. jim richards, thanks very much for joining us. >> thank you. >> all right. meanwhile -- >> senator john mccain has been blasting his fellow republicans over the weekend. listen to this. >> wonder what ronald reagan would be saying today. it's not the republican party of the 21st century. >> is this a good move politically? [ male announcer ] so don't blame it on aging. talk to your doctor and go to isitlowt.com to find out more. >> gun holders in ohio about to have the right to be locked and loaded. ohio governor fresh off his golf tournament set to sign a bill that would let people with concealed carry permits bring their guns into bars and restaurants serving alcohol. but some believe it or not say this is a dangerous idea. here to debate it, the director of federal affairs for gun owners of america and paul who is the president of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. paul, you're against this. why? >> it's, i think, putting more loaded guns in more places and mixing that with liquor like in football stadiums and baseball stadiums and then forcing private business owners to have to accept this or at least have to take affirmative action to stop it, i think that's ridiculous. it's more guns that don't make us safer. loaded guns don't make us safer. i was the mayor for 12 years and i've seen police make mistakes. when you let people that haven't had the training and don't have the responsibility necessarily to do this, i think it puts us all at risk. the rest of us ought to know when these sort of things are happening. >> has he persuaded you? >> no, it's a good idea any time you eliminate a so-called gun-free zone, put the law abiding citizen on equal footing with the criminal because criminals already carry guns into these places. it's only the law abiding citizens who prevent it. what we're talking about here in ohio, truly -- it should be called guns in applebee's and chili's, the restaurants. people who carry concealed can't consume alcohol. we're talking about people going to the family restaurant and having the ability to defend themselves. we can't predict and neither can lawmakers when the next criminal attack is going to occur. it's immoral to deny people the right to defend themselves and their loved ones. >> all right. so if you have a concealed carry permit, they want to be able to carry it. >> part of the problem here is a lot of states don't do a good job in issuing concealed carry permits. in the last four years, concealed carry permit holders have murdered at least 309 people in this country including 11 police officers, 18 mass shootings and what we're talking about here is not just applebee's, we're talking about go to the browns game and go to the bengals game and maybe folks don't get upset when they're playing the steelers and maybe they don't get upset at the referees but when you combine alcohol in this setting with people with loaded guns, i think you're -- >> in a country this big, we will say only eight states don't allow it and 22 states directly allow guns in bars and restaurants and, you know, you don't hear a ton of these incidents, do you, john? >> no and paul must get tired of singing the same tune. every time they try to relax carry laws, we hear the chicken littles of america say blood is going to come to the streets. crime doesn't go up. crime goes down because criminals doesn't know who is carrying a firearm to defend them. >> the governor says you get it to me, i will sign it. the republican governor of ohio. >> this is the first state to do it in the stadiums and i think it's a mistake and the families that have been concealed by carry permits. >> respectful debate. well done. thanks. >> thank you. >> straight ahead, what's got these three governors sitting on the same side of the table? you're about to see them. republicans scott walker, bob mcdonald along with the democratic governor are all together next for one cause. but first on this date in history, 1964, brian kilmeade was born to this song. number one song "chapel of love" by the dixie cups. that is on my ipod and my eight track player. >> well, you know, there's real competition between us governors for jobs. i mean, i think that's the way the founders expected these laboratories of democracies to be. we try to do some of the basics, keep taxes, litigation low. keep good right to work laws. strengthen our universities and create the incentives such as tax credits for companies that come to virginia, governor's opportunity to provide cash for assistance and relocating to our state, trade offices abroad and just do everything you can to promote job creation and get the bureaucracy out of the way. that's worked in virginia and i think a lot of other governors are doing the same thing. >> sure. speaking of a lot of other governors, i know a lot of governors it sounds like are running for president right now and some people have been talking about rick perry. governor walker, when you look at what they're doing in texas, apparently texas has added, i think the most -- they have added as many jobs there as the other 49 states combined. when you look at what you're doing in wisconsin, what do you -- what are you going to suggest is the best idea you've got? >> well, in fact, i take both bob and rick. in fact, i use their slogan, in our case we say wisconsin is open for business. i know bob has put that up on his state line but it's more than just a sign or symbolism. it's about changing the business climate so in our case, we went from being ranked 41 a year ago to ranked 24. we're moving up, trying to get to the level where virginia and texas and some of the other top states are. it's the business climate. taxes, regulation litigation. make sure you have strong infrastructure and a great education system and it makes a good place for employers. we have a long ways to go. we're hoping to learn from some of the other governors. >> you're in the restaurant business and i understand when you would go into a restaurant, sir, you would go in and you would talk to, you know, take over -- or turn around business, you would say to the employees, ok ok, we got to cut costs. how can you help us, right? >> right. absolutely. the whole trick here is we can't do it by ourselves. we have to make sure our work force is with us. we have to -- we're going to cut red tape and the size of government, we can't do that in isolation, we have to get everybody working together. >> isn't that what governor walker was doing up in wisconsin where they've got that, you know, the law which was found absolutely legal and should go forward in wisconsin which had stripped public employees of their collective bargaining rights. governor hickenlooper, wouldn't you say that's what governor walker was trying to do with that? >> there are different approaches to these issues and each us have our own separate culture to deal with and our own separate approaches. we've been trying to focus on how do we get everybody working together and maybe make some of these significant changes a little more incrementally. >> governor walker, that's really -- you want things to work in wisconsin but, you know, you had these great big pensions and other things going forward, you had to make some changes. >> well, that's exactly right and for us long term to make an appeal to investors, to job creators in our state, we had a structural deficit, largest ever two years ago. we've wiped that out and we'll have a surplus at the end of this budget cycle and long term, i think investors want stability. they want to come into a state whether it's wisconsin, virginia, colorado, texas, you name it, they want some sense of stability and they want to know if they come and do business in that state, they'll have the kind of support that they need and i think today, that's why democrats and republican governors alike we're coming together to figure out ways to promote economic growth at the state level because it's not happening here in washington. >> sure. and governor mcdonald, the problem with unemployment is it's a bipartisan thing. you got people on both sides of the aisle and right down the middle of the aisle who are looking for work and so far, the federal government has not been able to really get a handle on this. >> no. but i think that's why governors are being so aggressive. i think that we understand that it's the private sector that creates wealth and opportunity. it's not the government. washington seems to have just the opposite view with so much of this spending and excesses and mandates on states and, you know, what we're doing in the states is to say we need to reduce all that bureaucracy that gets in the way of the job creators, the entrepreneur, the capitalist, the people that create all the opportunities and let them do what they do best and, you know, washington hasn't quite got it yet but we're working at it at the state level. >> well, we could use the advice. we certainly need to create jobs. i mentioned a moment ago a bunch of governors are running for president. any of the three of you interested in throwing your hat in the ring? >> i nominate hickenlooper. >> we're new guys. we have our hands full, right? we're just happy getting people to work in our states. >> exactly. >> we'll cut the red tape and get people back to work first. >> that's a good idea. thank you very much. you got an hour and four minutes to get across town over to the chamber. governors walker, mcdonald and hickenlooper, thanks for joining us live. >> thank, steve. appreciate it. >> terrific. straight ahead, pointing lasers at planes? >> no question. we've got a bipartisan effort by senators john mccain and john kerry. also one proposed bay close ally of this white house, dirk durbin. but he would limit it to the end of the year. one key republican senator said he's not crazy about the way the administration handled libya, but victory is important. take a listen. >> the president's done a lousy job of communicating and managing our involvement in libya, but i will be no part of an effort to defund libya or to try to cut off our efforts to bring gadhafi down. if we fail against gadhafi, that's the end of nato. >> while the military effort continues in libya, the war of words here in washington continues. i can tell you as a news guy, it is pouring here in the mid atlantic region. back to you. >> steve: thank you very much. it's a pretty nice day on saturday. how did that golf outing with speaker boehner and the president go? hour days into this, he said he was quitting congress because of the sexting scandal. new york democrat anthony wiener has not submitted an official letter to be removed from the office. his spokesman says the offices in new york and washington are open and fully staffed today. what are they doing? >> steve: what's the hold up? >> i don't know. miss usa pageant came down to a battle of the bff's apparently. miss california versus her blond best friend, miss tennessee. check it out. >> miss usa 2011 is california! >> they seems so shocked! she's totally shocked. i thought it was alisyn when i looked at the name. >> brian: she could win. >> she was born and raised in new jersey, where all beautiful women originate and moved to california four years ago, which happens sometimes. she's going to represent the united states in the miss universe pageant in september. looks like she's got some assets there. >> brian: i guess she was going swimming. >> steve: sure. so donald trump has a new employee. meanwhile, let's talk about this, we've been talking about it for about a week or so. it sounds like the governor of great state of texas, rick perry, right there, it sounds like his aides behind the scenes are looking into the filing deadlines for iowa, new hampshire, also south carolina and nevada. also trying to figure out how to get him into that straw poll in iowa in august. this past weekend he was down in new orleans. he spoke at the republican leadership conference. listen to this. does it sound like he's running? >> that mix of arrogance and audacity that guides the obama administration is an affront to every freedom-loving american and a threat to every private sector job in this country. they clearly think that they know best. our loudest opponents on the left are never going to like us, so let's quit trying to curry favor with them! let's stop this american downward spiral! we're doing this and it's happening because of too much spending, too much interfering and too much apologizing. >> brian: he also basically his staff says 50/50 about running. he's trying to assess also how much money he would need and what are the chances he would need. what are some of the positives? economy, he's done a good job in texas. number one, over 200,000 jobs added this year in texas. in terms of unemployment, it's still there and he does have a definite sit this year. that will come up. >> people have been saying they're looking for energy and passion on the gop side. he certainly answers that. i always try to picture what the debates would look like, it would be fascinating to see rick perry debating president obama. there is just so much contrast in their style. >> brian: by the way, it doesn't seem like they got along. remember the one time they got a chance to meet, he wanted to hand him something about how bad illegal immigration was in texas, the president didn't want any part of it. >> steve: it sounds like huntsman will get in tomorrow. secretary of defense gates is son his victory lap. he's on at least two of the talk shows yesterday, indicated that apparently on a diplomatic level, the united states government is talking directly to the taliban. but listen carefully, we don't know for sure whether or not the taliban diplomat, if you will, that we're talking to, is actually the road to mullah omar who is ultimately who we need to be talking to. >> brian: or killing. >> who represents mullah omar, who represents the taliban, we don't want to end up having a conversation at some point with somebody who is basically a freelancer. i think that the taliban have to feel themselves under military pressure and begin to believe that they can't win before they're willing to have a serious conversation. >> brian: goes on to say he's concerned to pull out of afghanistan because they're war weary, but others say we have to finish because you have to ask yourself, what is the price of failure? we left in 1989, he was part of that decision process. and ten years later, we had 9-11 and that was a haven for al-qaeda. so what is the short-term answer? a lot of people say, let's call it a day. what's the long-term answer? one, perhaps the competence of mr. beaz. i'm not so sure about that, although that argument will be made. the smellavision testimony we had earlier about being able to smell death and pick up on chemical associated with death; the duct tape, the disappearing heart testimony, is all this junk science or real? >> martha: it's very interesting. you can sort of feel jose beaza closing argument, how he's trying to put this together in putting doubt in the jurors' mind and they put forward this whole notion that the baby drowned in the pool and that the family tried to cover it up, the father and casey tried to cover it up. on friday, you had the testimony that said there was never a body in the trunk, that the decomposition fluids found inside the trunk were not, that they didn't match up with any typical decomposition fluid. if you can say the baby was never in the trunk and then you can say, there was no suffocation with duct tape or raise doubt about the possibility that the child was suffocated with duct tape, then you're building a case where you can see, the baby drowned in the pool. then they buried the body in the woods. >> you're absolutely woods. but the question becomes and everybody is asking, and most legal analysts are ducking it. is she going to testify? it appears now that based upon some of the so-called junk science, based on the distaste that this particular judge has for the defense counsel, based on the fact that there is not a cause of death and motive is not something you necessarily have a prove, but a lot of juries like to hear motive, what is the motive in this case, is this case being built for a conviction at the time of trial and then three years from now an appellate decision throws it out and we have a second trial and then she actually testifies with regard to what she says happened? if she testifies as to what she says happened here and then the jury hears it and then she's convicted, the appellate issues that appear to be strong at this point may, in fact, go out the window because an appellate court says no, we heard from the defendant. she gave her story and the jury didn't believe it. maybe holding their fire on that. >> martha: if you think your client is guilty, the best thing you can do is buy them time and process. >> because the alternative is death. >> martha: exactly. >> america is watching. >> martha: indeed they are. thank you very much. good to see you, too. coming up right here, jon stewart losing his love for president obama? >> first and foremost, we're normally flying at night. when you get hit with a laser, it's very distracting. you can get flash blindness. you're flying along and all of a sudden you can't see. it's a bad situation. >> steve: absolutely. now, sergeant, are we talking about the little laser pointers like we're looking at right here that people use in presentations or on chalk boards or what? >> no. these are more powerful. green lasers. they use over 5 milla watts. if you shine them in the sky, it looks like a light saber. the power of them, you can pop balloons from across the room. back in the 1990s i had both my corneas burned by these types of lasers when i was flying. it can have disasterous effects. >> brian: it happens, it's dangerous. what happens if you're caught doing this to a pilot like you? what are the ramifications? >> state of california has a statute on the books that makes it a felony to shine lasers at aircraft. the most recent tool that we have in our arsenal is the faa has come out with an opinion on a civil sanction of $11,000 per incident and we are going after the first one in the country for that for an arrest we made about three weeks ago in glendale. >> steve: here is one of the ways the federal government is screwed up, in my estimation. i understand that we're talking about lasers pointed in the eyes of pilots flying airplanes. you would think that that would be regulated. lasers would be regulated by the faa. however, they're currently being regulated by the f.d.a. does that make sense to you? >> the f.d.a. is the one that sets the standards for the lasers. the faa has actually been very cooperative with us, the department of -- secretary lahood has been cooperative. with this opinion, we tried the education side. we tried to go to the public and say, look, it's unsafe to be doing this, it's illegal in california to be doing this. but now we have a civil sanction we can go after $11,000 and we're hoping after that first check is written that the word will truly get out there and a lot of folks think it's just teen-agers doing this. the f.b.i. has profiled it and it's actually either male teen-agers or men in their 30s. the last two arrests we've made in the last month, one was a 31-year-old male and the other was a 30-year-old male. >> brian: i don't know how you possibly find somebody on the ground shooting a plane. >> steve: yet, they do catch these guys all the time, although it is looking like looking for a needle in a hay stick, isn't it? >> we've been very successful. we have the highest arrest rate out of the country in burbank and glendale. we got cameras and infrared technology on board and it makes it very easy for us and we're in the business of catching crooks. we're in the business of searching for criminals and this is no different. this is a criminal act. it's not an interference. it's a crime. this is not a video game. >> brian: you have a physical injury, too. >> that's correct. >> steve: it's not a video game. you're right. let's hope that the word gets out that it is a dumb thing to do and now it can cost you $11,000 perhaps. sergeant steve robertson, we thank you for joining us today from the city of angels. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> brian: thanks. straight ahead, senator john mccain ripping into his own party. is this really a good idea? holy cow. >> martha: it's just hanging out there in the air, like one nation. you could have probably done it in a way that you wouldn't have noticed so clearly. but you're just waiting for that. >> brian: everyone called the hot line and they eventually apologized. here is the apology. >> martha: it says, it was our intent to begin our coverage of the u.s. open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being here in the nation's capitol for the third time. regretly, a portion of the pledge that was in the feature was edited out. it was not done to upset anyone and we would like to apologize for those offended. >> steve: a portion. that's how they apologized. a portion. they don't say we left out the "under god" part. >> brian: barbara says, i believe nbc is against christians and god. i believe they took the in god we trust out with intent. >> martha: how do you really feel, barbara? >> steve: wally from new jersey said between the white house and these other outfits, this problem with god is not a coincidence. it is obvious, sad, and extremely sad. i personally will not be giving nbc any ratings. i am editing them out of my line - up. >> brian: here is the other side. >> martha: nbc deserves criticism for omitting under god from the pledge of allegiance. it was done on purpose and someone should be fired. that would be on the same side of that one. >> brian: i don't think we can get anybody on the other side. nbc left out under god on purpose. the apology was weak and insincere. >> steve: actually we didn't get anybody who thought that it was just a coincidence or a mistake. everybody -- >> martha: there are some things that you just can't edit. that you don't take any license with at all. because it's a bad idea. >> steve: keep the e-mails coming. we'll read them through the end of the program. >> martha: all right. so now the rest of your headlines this morning. you're taking a live look at the governor's conference in washington, d.c. where they're milling around and having coffee. in less than an hour from now, a bipartisan group of governors from six states getting together in washington for a summit on reviving the economy. there is a good yes. governor walker of wisconsin says curbing taxes and regulations on businesses are key to creating jobs. >> long-term, i think investors want stability. they want to come into a state whether it's wisconsin, colorado, virginia, texas, you name it, they want some sense of stability and they want to know if they come and do business in that state, they'll have the kind of support they need and i think today, that's why democrats and republicans governors are coming together to figure out ways to promote economic growth at the state level 'cause it's not happening here in washington. >> brian: which one wasn't the governor there? >> martha: which one doesn't belong? all right. the governors were brought together by the u.s. chamber of commerce and the national chamber foundation. >> steve: meanwhile, the search will resume later today for missing indiana university student lauren speier and it comes a day after a new tip turned out to be a dead end. crews spent the day combing the woods after getting a tip about a suspicious odor. but nothing was found. she's been missing for more than two weeks. >> brian: a family says hair 12-year-old son died after a doctor wrote the wrong prescription and the pharmacy filled that prescription. his family now suing walgreens and the doctor, according to court documents. the doctor wrote two prescriptions for the same drug at different strengths. the suit claims walgreen's should have caught the error. he was being treated for depression and aggressive behavior when he died of an overdose. >> brian: did you see this? jon stewart -- >> martha: jon stewart falling out of love with president obama. he talked about his disappointment with the commander in chief. listen to this. >> are you disappointed in barak obama as president? >> yes. i think i am. >> do you think he's lived up to his promise to fix the economy? >> no. i don't know the kind of sway that a president can have on the economy, but do i believe that he's lived up to the promises, no. he came in and said, you can't expect to have a different result with the same people. that was in many ways, his seminal campaign focus. and all i see, as far as economic stewardship, are the guys that got us into this mess in the first place. >> steve: in addition to his opinion on the current president of the united states, he also spent a good portion of his time, the formerly funny comedian did, bashing fox. >> brian: that's what chris wallace's questions were about. it was pretty much exactly what he wanted. i thought it was a great segment. >> martha: very interesting. and a lot of back and forth. i thought what he said about the economy -- the same people are not in charge. haven't been for 2 1/2 years, and they've already gone through a number of -- >> brian: geithner is the only one left. >> martha: exactly. i'm not sure what he meant by that. >> brian: he loss voted for bush 41. people across the country drafting rick perry for president. will he throw his hat into the ring? >> i think he ranks high among our base and obviously i think he's been a strong governor. >> brian: and the response from the audience, you think it was as high as anybody that was up there? >> yeah. obviously the crowd was pumped up and the reason they're pumped up, obviously, is that we've got a president here that's tone deaf to the economy and the trouble that we're having. we're off the rails in this country and we've got a president who is whistling past the graveyard. the base there in new orleans, they were excited for 2 1/2 days. i mean, the roof was blown off mullet pull times and i expect we'll continue to see excitement. >> martha: a lot of people were surprised to see the very positive reaction to michelle bachman at the last debate. but is he going to infuse more enthusiasm into things? >> i think there is a lot of enthusiasm right now. i mean, these guys -- >> martha: was he interested in running was the question. >> i think the more people talking about what we need to do to get this country back on track, the more republicans, different kinds of republicans, in the field, in iowa, in new hampshire, i think that's good for our party. it's good for our chances in defeating this president. >> brian: mitt romney, ron paul, john huntsman, michelle bachman, all picking a war and saying we're against it, libya, john mccain, among many people who are disturbed by this new trend among the candidates who are on the stage a week ago. let's listen. >> i wonder what ronald reagan would be saying today. >> what would he be saying today? for instance about michelle bachman or mitt romney? >> that's not the republican party of the 20th century and now the 21st century. that's not the republican party that has been willing to stand up for freedom, for people for all over the world, whether it be from granada that ronald egg houston a quick operation about, or enduring commitment to countering the soviet union. >> i'm not going to get in the weeds on this issue. >> brian: is it the weeds? this is a big issue, though. >> i mean, i have a lot of respect for senator mccain. obviously i think that speaker boehner and the president and all of the joint chiefs and our military leaders, they have to sit down and make these determinations. as the party chairman, i'm not privy to any of the inside and confidential information that our leaders are. so an issue like this, i really have to defer to speaker boehner and the president and decisions that they make. i have to do that as chairman of the party. >> brian: would you recommend to mitt romney and others, back off because you don't know enough? >> no. i think these are issues of national security and i think that these are issues that require a tremendous amount of confidential information that i just have as the chairman of the national party. so i'm not going to criticize one or two particular candidates for their opinions. i'm not going to criticize an american hero like john mccain. i think these are things that folks there have special information. >> steve: one thing that the republicans have criticized is the health care bill that was championed by the president of the united states and the republicans have offered as proof that it's a stink bomb and not going to work is the fact that something like 1400 different health care waivers have been -- there it is. 1433 -- have been granted to businesses and unions and things like that and now the news is this morning, chairman, that apparently they're going to stop the program as of september. >> isn't it ironic, because it was president obama who continually said, this is what americans want. this is what they're clamoring for, and then the policies came through and obamacare came through and all of a sudden, people don't want it. health care isn't getting cheaper and companies don't want to be part of the program and the reaction to the president is holy cow, this is making us look really bad. >> steve: was that a political decision? >> i'm sure there is a bit of politics in all of these decisions. when companies left hand over fist to get out of this program that the president said was a panacea, it highlights it's not the economy, stupid, it's the policies, stupid. and president obama's policies l it be health care, whether it be our debt and our deficit in creating all these jobs, he said he was going to create, they're not working. it's obama's policies that aren't working. that's going to be his undoing. >> martha: he did say they were going to end that program before -- it was going to run out before 2012, that they wouldn't be offering a those. but you do question the timing of it. the later they did it. >> they're getting hammered on the fact that companies and businesses that hire americans don't want this program. >> steve: all right. chairman, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> brian: coming up straight ahead, i hope you're watching. >> steve: there are rumors the end of the road is near for "desperate housewives." is that true?
