Theyre helping with all of the pieces that are part of the publishing process. So editorial is what we are doing today. We are publishing the anthology of essays written by women. Lookout was found in 2009 but we published our first book in 2011. Its called binocular vision. We published a title each year. So envious since then weve been putting out story selections, debut novels, essay collections, poetry collections. This will be our second anthology thats coming out in 2018. And though the mission is that small is to represent authors, debut authors and those overlooked. So the students are part of our staff, and every week get together to help to contribute to one of those pieces of the publishing process. Lookout books is one of several entities that fall under the auspices of something we called the Publishing Laboratory, part of the department of creative library. It was found in 2000 under the visionary guidance of my predecessor Stanley Colbert who retired to this end was a former cfo harper collins. An interesting background with a lot of experience and expertise. He founded the lab. The idea of this being to pull back the curtain on the publishing process for our writers in the bachelors and Fine Arts Program d also the Masters Program in creative writing so that they would have the tools to pitch their work to publishers, to put together book proposals, query letters so that they can understand a little bit about the typesetting process, the book design process, marketing and promotion and distribution. So what he brought in was an inhouse bindery. So the small perfect binder, student started making their own small run books, whether chapbooks or limited samples if you will of their longer theses project. Which is a fine artistic tradition in its own right, producing chapbooks. So that was sounded like i said in 2001, and it is going overtime to it is now a 16 station desktop publishing facility. Under the auspices of the Publishing Laboratory we have a magazine which is a complement to the institute in new york. All 12 a magazine i mention that was that 2005 by the chair of the creative writing department. We also like ascent founded lookout in 2009 and have brought out now seven titles under the literary imprint lookout books. Youve got a small press inhouse, 2a magazines inhouse and students i in the voucher programs and Masters Program can participate fully in the publishing process and all the different aspects that it takes to bring a book and magazines into the world. I imagined you design it, it goes like, topography would be best represented. When we send them when i write to other freelancers where they are working as a cover designer or for a military or writing specificay, we wod like to use this, igivingou an example spirit of the courses meet once a week for three hours and they function as a staff meeting. People reporting on various things that theyve been working on in the class, and once a week and there also some meetings so you will have the group of editors will meet independently during the week. Same thing the design team would get together. Heard me in class today saying between now and this time next week i what all the interior designers to get together and put together some samples that we can review as a group next week. Students start off very intimidated by the idea publishing, or publisher is a big scary evil, they are the ones say no so i think that having students learn about publishers and what we do, what we bring to a manuscript, that were making a Financial Investment in a manuscript of the will bring all of our design resources come on editorial sources and capabilities to make the book the best they can possibly be competent help it find its readership. A book and my microsoft finished until it find its audience. Thats really what im trying to help them see the publishing process is an artistic process, and publishers and editors and book designers, even marketers as artis who are part of this larger publishing entity. One of the things thats the most exciting is that students are now going out and growing. They are finding the places where we really need a publisher for just this, and then out all the tools and resources to be able to do that. Also from my writers they are learning the publishing process, how to find the right home for the work. They are learning about all of these Small Independent Presses around the country, alongside the big five publishers. Really i think finding a better complement for the work, learning how to find the right agent pick and also learning something behind the scenes process. I think they will have, they will have Great Respect for the publishing process and for all of the artists within the work as part of bringing the book into the world
