Smiled. He hes able to touch people across all religious lines. He is not just foe focused on the members of the catholic faith. A while ago i was to visit the hospital, i went to visit one of our hospitals, as i was going in through the revolving door there was a woman who was coming out, she stopped and waited, when i went through the door she said she identified the church of which she was a member and she said to me, you know, i just love this pope. I think he is doing such a great job. We chatted for a few minutes. When i came back out after visiting the priest, the security man at the hospital entrance said to me, my priest secretary had the car, im glad we had a chance to talk because you need to know, he identified the church that he belonged which was not catholic and he said, this pope, our pope is doing a great job. I find this not unusual to hear this type of response from people. I have a very dear jewish rabbi friend that reminded me that i need to be careful that im taking care of our pope. I think that he has the ability to reach across all kinds of lines and touch people on something that is fundamental, absolutely basic and that is humanity and desire to live together in harmony, peace, respecting one others faith convictions, respecting one anothers, thats an area, a demographic that is usually identified as having drifted away or not particularly interested in faith issues, and yet, im finding the largest number number of people who are showing an interest once again in the light of the church is demographic. Ill give you just a couple of examples. When i visit the camp minister program in campuses around washington, the number of young people at those meetings has increased dramatically and they have very good questions. One of the things that i find so particularly encouraging about all of this is, this is a generation that really searching, seeking, they dont come with baggage, they dont come with a lot of negative, this pope is for real. They are seeing in him, they are finding in him something extremely authentic, real, they would say he walk the walk. I think we would say that he he simply reflects in a credible way in his life the message that he announces in his words. And thats a beautiful, beautiful thing to say. Some of our young people, we opened a seminary four years ago. This month is the beginning of 50year. That seminary is filled with college age and postcollege age young men and when i asked them about the impression of the holy father is very much along those same lines. One of the young men said to me, he sounds like and he looks like meaning the way he acts, like the way i would envision jesus sounding, and somehow pope francis ability to cut down all stereotypes and baggage and all types of lenses and actually reach people in a way that he seems as real as credible as authentic. Weve done about ten minutes of open, if you can summarize at the end because ive got a lot of folks who are ready to do that. I would just conclude then because we do have to leave this open, thats part of the reason why we are here, i think we do have to recognize what we think he hopes to achieve. And im going to im not going to try to answer that now because that may very well be one of the questions that comes up, but the expectation of this visit that hes about to make. Having said that, i will following the wise and sage direction of the chair, im going to conclude and open to questions; is that right . Thats correct. Weve going to my colleagues to start, mark shields, mike, john, from the Dallas Morning News and demetri from the new york times. Im wondering how a new pope with new views changes the life of a cardinal, in this change it changes dramatically because one of the things that pope francis is trying to do is engage what we would call residential issues, bishops to engage them in the work of the roman, the only way is to go and be present for meetings. I find that the real impacts he had on my life is increaseing at meetings where the holey father is holy father is trying to hear the voice around the world and not just the world around the puria. But theres another element. I think hes made life a little easier because hes the one who seems to be engaging to world, and so when we are invited in to discussions, theres already a disposition to the message because theyve already, so many people find francis as i said earlier credible, inviting, and so our work is a little easier than now when you talk to someone who has already disposed to hear that message. Those would be two areas that i would find have impacted me very greatly. Mark shields. Catholic church in the United States and catholic universally has had human position on immigration, given the crisis in the world the failure to the United States to welcome any refugees specially given United States role unrest in the middle east do you look for the church to provide some leadership and calling upon the United States to meet its responsibility while germany and some many of the Northern European counties have opened their hearts to these poor souls . Thank you for raising the voice of the church in the United States is articulated on matters that touch public policies. The United States conference of catholic bishops has a voice that we utilize to address Public Policy issues, and for years we have been addressing the need for some some human way to deal with the issue of migrants, immigrant, and now displaced people in huge numbers because of the violence, of what we are experiencing, most of the people are coming from one particular part of the world, they are coming from the middle east where the violence particularly directed to minorities and cristian communities is horrendous. I find it shocking that there is so much silence about that, that were seeing the slaughter of people and there isnt that type of outcry that one would expect from parliaments, social media, thats one element and i believe violence is a big factor. There are those who remain silent while they are going on. Theres been a history recently of this level of atrocity that has cost people, people that are drowning are fleeing the situation. People that are not clogged on people that are trying to make their way to train stations to get out of, thats the result, thats the result of whats happening in land where they are and there doesnt seem to be the yet that worldwide commitment to do something about that and it means all of us finding a much more observant europe and much more observant north america to help receive the people who are who are fleeing for their lives. So part of the issue, i believe, is the church has spoken out over and over again for decades of the humane treatment, particularly those who come to our country because we all started that way, we all came here from some where else, were the only country in the world that was really founded by victims and not the victors, we should be aware and alert to the need of people struggling to share in all the promise that makes us a great country. Thank you. Im interested what wounds remain from the vaticans clash with the american nuns and what deeper challenges for the american whole as a church. Im not sure that there are re residual to use your word, wounds, i think what was happening was trying to get different perspectives on the same issue addressed by everybody around the table and one of the things that has emerged from all of it and, i think, its because pope francis has been supportive of the idea that theres much more to be gained by all of the parties involved, listening to each other and trying to see where there might be differences of perspective. My understanding is that the sisters made it very, very clear they had not doctrine at all and the congregation at the conclusion of its studies said that the issues today are essentially resolved, its a question of listening and hearing. Were going to emily wilkens. I wanted to ask about the vatican, priest will be forgiving abortions and one of the big stories in congress is discussion about planned parenthood and the videos that have come out where it appears that officials have admitted to selling tissue. Is this a prior prior priority e vatican to address or the pope to address . Long, long standing position of the Catholic Church going back all the way to the second century articulated is that the destruction of innocent life in the womb is wrong. Its innocent human life. Thats even more heinous when uses made of the remains of a child that has been destroyed in the womb, the churchs position is very clear that is not going to change. Human life is the great gift of god. We have all received so many fundamentals gifts, its the gift of life itself. Were stewarts on this, we really dont have the right to determine who lives and who dies when we are dealing with innocent. The church has been underlying recently that even in the case of someone who isnt innocent, for example, the dealt death penalty, the biased should be in favor of life because its the fundamental gift. A lot of the things i found attractive if he says at the very heart of all of creation its the human, you have to start to recognize the dignity and value of the person. You have to recognize that human person as a hole that our common home is this either and we need to care for this earth, but then he goes onto say development, whatever development is going to take case has to take case with the awareness that its the human being who needs to be the center of that development, and development has to be sustainable and has to be done in a way that the next generation and the generation after that will be able to enjoy the fruit of this planet. Oh how hard is the church going to work to get catholics to washington, d. C. For the visit, if you want to make he invited three spokes, why has pope traditionally shun the legislative branch in the United States . Well, let me start with the beginning of that multifaceted question. [laughs] what are we doing by inviting people and preparing, you have to remember the holey holy father is coming to the United States, hes going to visit three cities. Philadelphia is the place where he is going to be engaging the huge crowd. We were told the separation from the visit, that the idea of doing huge malltype mass was not really what the holy father was when he was visited washington, but thats going to take place in philadelphia because theyve been preparing for years with the world meeting with families. That hasnt stopped people from asking, this is part of the challenge we are facing. I dont have to encourage anybody to come to this city, to come to the events. I found that i have far more dear friends than i ever realized i had and for every seat we had remember, we only have 25,000 seats at that mass, for every seat we have, i would say we have ten requests, so the balancing act is how do you get equitable distribution of those seats so that representation of everybody is there, thats the first challenge. And youre right, the responsibility of security, traffic, crowd control, safety. I think are working wonderfully well to try to face the reality that when this pope comes theres going to be people everywhere who want to see him. Our problem is simply limitation of space. But thats a good problem to have. [inaudible] i dont know the history of other requests. I do know that this holy father seems to be comfortable taking any floor, podium, platform, he doesnt seem to be molded by the audience. He takes his message and presents it in the hope that that audience will hear his message. So i think when he speaks to congress, hes going to be bring message, spiritual message, and im pleased that he feels that comfortable speaking to any group, not just a religious forum. Let me do a quick followup. In new york recently announced plans to have to pope drive through central park and allow people to see him on either side, is there any such plan underway here in washington . We hope that when he is at the basilica at national mass, there would be some part of a route where people will be able to see him. Were also hoping that there will be some time when he is coming or going from the white house, that there will be an opportunity for people to see him, that and all together finalize, part of it is the concern of security that you dont announce too far in advance. One thing about central park, that area is going to be closed off, long in advance. But thats a venue that they have that we really dont have quite in that format. Religious liberties has become a hot topic in the church and capitol hill on marriage decision, suggested that the government might ask all religious institutions to comply, if that happened, what would it have to give up and how would it address it . The issue of religious liberty as you know predates that particular issues goes back basically to the ages of mandate where our objection primarily was the decision of the government to decide for us what constitutes religious practice and what constitutes religious works that are not part of our faith and practice. We went into court precisely because we thought we feel as much religious mandate, you shall not kill, you shall not bare false witness. Thats our argument right now that we really dont think government should be telling us how we should practice our faith and historically in our country, the practice of the faith has been a public thing. When you think of great institutions, health care, social service, charities, when you think of all of the areas have impact on this country, so much grew out of religious faith. These are religious institutions that established first hospitals, orphanages, charities, and were saying thats invalid for us today as it was centuries ago when we were getting started. So i think part of the concerning is going to be and why the bishops of our country have spoken up, religious freedom shouldnt be determine to affect someone else. Freedom of speech determined by somebody else. You legitimately object to ways who would say these are the thick things you can address because they dont come in the realm of freedom of speech. Dont say to us you cant be religious in this area. You can only be religious in your sanctuaries. Thats part of the challenge. But thats something that we have worked on from the beginning in our country, finding a balance to public order, the law of the land and how we live with them. Obviously i was interested in particularly that the pope is going to washington, here in the United States, what would an effect to washington policies. How much has it communicated, through expertise have you picked on what he will say regarding Public Policy of the policy matters in the United States, one area in particular of what, you know, a layperson like me might expect to Say Something would be on Climate Change a, given the letter in june and b the letter in december. Do you know how much he would say about Climate Change and treatment of the poor, immigrant in the u. S. . Thank you for the question because it allows a response that includes a very, very important distinction. Im very much aware that Public Policy is a big part of the interest everybody around this table. I think what our holy father will be doing is addressing issues, Public Policy is one way of responding to issues, but another way to address issues is to put them in a spiritual dimension, to remind us that these are real valid interests and that they require a response and that there has to be a way to deal as you point out, there has to be a way to deal with issues of environment with issues of human freedom, with issues of life and the flourishing of human life, but it false to the government to come up with a policy, the government to come up with ways of addressing that, particularly a associate where the voices of all are going to be heard, but to the pope and church to remind us that you need to address these and theres parameters to address the issues. He keeps reminding us that the human person is the center of whatever decision you make concerning any Public Policy, and the flourishing of the human person from conception to natural death, the flourishing of the person is at the heart of our appreciation of human life and development. I dont know what hes going to say because i havent seen the text, but i think hes going to call us to our own very real and, i think, positive history. This country is made up of so many groups, so many institutions and so many expressions of Community Whether it is religious, whether its community service, whether it is fraternities, unions, whether its made up of gatherings of people who Work Together to solve a problem in our local community, and thats one of the strengths of our country, we are multilayered, we are not mo nol ithic in which decisions are made and carried out by a system of government. Our responses to human problems reflect the complexity and the makeup of our country. Its something that the holy father will be speaking of, history of ours, free to take on respond to go responding to human problems. Thank you. Before we go back to subject abortion because that was the big news of vatican this week. There seems to be confusion about what this means, can you explain what the norm has been in terms of absolution in cases of abortion, how will that change this coming admin, and then can you talk about that in sort of context of pope francis where he seems to be presenting a more open merciful Forgiving Church in areas of divorce, homosexual . I believe thats the secret to the holy father ministry. He, as i said earlier, he does he proclaims the foolness of the gospel. Theres no change of the value and sacredness of life and that life cant be taken even when its in the womb, but what our holy father is saying, all that said, how do we deal now with someone who has had an a abortion and isnt the response of love, compassion, care, he keeps reminding us that we all need the embrace of gods mercy. We all need who can say, i i dont need, im perfect, maybe Mother Teresa could have, but there are a few others who could say that. In fact, when the pope was asked to identify himself, he said im a sinner, but arent we all but a sinner embraced by the love of god, and thats what hes trying to say. This year of mercy is a time when all of us should be looking at one another with compassion and forgiveness, mindful of gods mercy, but that mercy is also shared through us. Were supposed to we pray to be forgiven as we forgive. It has always been the practice of the church that gives them the particular violence of this action, the destruction of a life and its a life in the womb that required absolution from that that remind us all of us of how that sin is, theyre required special permission. The holy father is saying every priest across the world during this time of mercy should just simply have that faculty, the power to do that without checking with the bishop for so in the past, permission has had to come from you . No, we had granted the faculty many, many places have already granted that faculty, that power, authority to a bishop, to a priest to do that because the idea is that the mercy should be as readily available as possible. The holy father is just saying, why dont we make it universal. This to be clear this was already [inaudible] it will not change anything. As a technical matter, every the faculty to do this is part of what our priests are able to do, but what i think that piece is only as important as is the bigger message, merciful and generous with the mercy. John who has provided me daily encouragement to set up the breakfast can ask you a question. Thank you. Youre certainly aware of current litigation involving the sisters of the poor, very simply, when hobby lobby case came up the family that owned hobby lobby said that the court ruled against them, they would close their company down rather than comply with the abortion to be using drugs under the Healthcare Plan for their employees. We dont know how Little Sisters of the poor will eventually come out. If it does go indeed against this catholic charity. Will the church urge them to follow the promise that the greenes made and simply close rather than provide abortioninducing drugs . The answer is going to fend depend on what the Supreme Court eventually rules. A lot of that, we will just have to wait to see what the court will finally rule because theres there are indications coming out of the court that they do make a distinction between those are those that are for profit and those that are really just accommodation thats been made in the case of one that wasnt made in the case of the other. I think were just going to have to wait and see how the Supreme Court through those issues. Michael from the Dallas Morning News. Good morning. [inaudible] the tone had been used before, particularly on gay marriage, abortion that had come up. Im just wondering you felt sort of in the sense of a way the church had made clear the positions a change in the way you go about your business, ministry people. I felt greatly affirmed by this pope and i felt encouraged, the affirmation was, again, he keeps saying to us the gospel message is what we need to keep proclaiming and thats what youve been doing and keep doing it. But the positive encouraging effect that i also felt was, let us emphasize the mercy of god, the compassion of god. Its a question of emphasis rather than dock expression. I felt encouraged by this father. When youve been at this a long time, this january will be 30 years as bishop, youve had an opportunity to do a lot of teaching and a lot of writing and instruction, and i didnt find anything that i would have to change in what i thought. I also found that its very, very encouraging to be told keep focusing on the mercy, keep focusing on the compassion aspect as well. There was a significant change. If you accept the idea that theres a significant change thats not subject the emphasis before he sent the message . It depends on theres always compassion and mercy in the teaching of the bishops in our country, but this time the holy father is highlighting it in his actions in a way that, i think, people are hearing it much more clearly. The the fact that none of the teaching has changes, means the only area that theres shading of emphasis is on the pastural apresident application. People are seeing in him that theres a strong focus, maybe all of us bishop and layperson in the church are saying, lets see how well we are doing that. Demetri. Try again on your name. Irish name. To what extent has the popes views on Climate Change to what extent has it brought in for liberal members, i know hes trying to reach out to prison in harlem but hes not going to iowa, hes not going to mexican border, hes not going to kansas, is there a sense that hes not seeing the real america . Let me start with the last part of that. I just watched this morning early this morning because it was sent to me last night the holy father is videoing in conversation with three different parts of the country. I think this is the first time that we have a pope who is trying to be present without necessarily being physically present. Its very, very taxing to have to fly all over the world to try to be with a flock that is spread throughout the world. This is the first time that i have been an effort to utilize Electronic Media to be in different parts of our country. Coming coming to the United States clearly, at least this was my position, clearly you have to stop at washington. I keep saying, if you visit the capital, in a sense youre visiting representationally the entire country, and then, of course, he is going to new york because of un and the philadelphia because of the gathering of families. We talked about this. It would simply be physically to get to the other places that are asking for his presence in a country this huge. I had i had one of the members not that long ago that it took five hours from new york to los angeles. I said, welcome to the United States. The challenge of what i think the holy father is facing. Your question i think provides us an occasion to reflect on how do you today do that. I think it can be done electronically as well as physically. Could i ask one question . Its going to be in spanish; is that right . The mass is going to be in spanish and well, i think the significance to that, first of all, its one of the holy fathers mother tongues. I think he grow grew up with spanish and italian. Hes most comfortable in spanish, but also its its a recognition of how large the hispanic population in the United States is and what a significant part of the church they are here in so much and other parts of the country. And also because he is can caninizing and coming as a first pope from the new world and the language in this hemisphere is spanish. It will not be soley spanish. Hes going to have some things in english. We do intend to have the jumbo trons with english. What does the hope plan to achieve specifically in washington . Thank you for that question. I dont know so im just projecting because i want to make that very clear. I havent been in any of the talks. He did say some time ago that he was working on his talk for the United States for congress but he didnt say to me, do you have any pointers. [laughs] but i would think that among the things he hopes to achieve would be a rebelling in recognition by all of us in this country that we really can if we Work Together make a difference, that it is possible to Work Together and that working together we need to care for people who have needs. We also need to be able to welcome the less fortunate and to revere all human life, and i think hes going to try to from all of us the understanding that we do have a responsibility for each other and also for our common home, this planet. What format that will take, i dont know. I dont think its going to be by proposing policy. I think it will be by calling us to understand that each one of us has a responsibility to one another and to our common home and that we have to find ways to Work Together to make that an achievable reality. We have about three minutes left. We have a number of people that have questions, we are probably not going to get to all of them. Thanks for coming. The pope talks to the president , they talk about the Common Ground was the pope basically said, i dont agree with your position on abortion and samesex marriage and try to find things that they agree on and try to achieve goals together . One of those reasons those meetings are always in private [laughs] and then there are the statements, this is what we talked about. So i just as you do, i have to rely on what comes out of those of those meetings by way of followup speaker. In the back. A few things. Very short. One of them was the pope is meeting with the president and obviously this president has a lot of affectionate for this pope, in terms of messaging, how, how far can the president go in, for lack of a better word, capitalizing without seeming like its going too far . How if the president went too far or capitalizing on the visit . I think just because we are short on time, lets do one with you. I was wondering how to say buy partisanship in latin. Years of practice, i dont think i would ever be offended by anyone including the president praising this holly holy father is that going to be used and understood is being used. I think thats a fact thats just a fact of life. Almost anything the pope says is going to be interpreted by somebody in presence of the holy father, maybe the speakers says by thanking the pope, its going to be interpreted by people in different ways. Thats maybe thats one of the things that this holy father is getting us can we find some Common Ground without having to start immediately within interpreting from the vintage point. You have a 30second question. Will the popes address be in spanish like the mass . The answer to the first question, my understanding is he will speak in english at congress. He will be reading a text because im not sure anybody gets into that without the text. And so hell be using a text and he will be speaking in english at that event. And the second part of your question . [inaudible] he has asked for im just saying he didnt ask me when he told me he was working on the text, he didnt ask me personally what i thought should be, but he has he has solicited from the conference of bishops thoughts, whatever that means. I want to thank you for coming very much, sir, we appreciate it. Look forward for your return. [laughs] david, thank you very much. Thank all of you. [inaudible conversations] tonight on book tv prime time books by 2016 president ial candidates. We begin with Ohio Governor on his book stand for something, the battle for americas soul. And we are back continuing our conversation about the selfemployed, the onethird of americans who are stringing together two to three jobs to make amp living, hoping us to continue that conversation is kelliei joining us from new yor, Vice President of Government Relations with public air force for the selfemployed. You heard from the senator talking about this, he is someone who has focused on having listening sessions, hes, you know focusing on it, in the work that he does in capitol hill. Do you think that this is this growing part of our economy needs attention from capitol hill . Guest absolutely. You know, he was joking there were several names, but whats really important is the conversation of how these individuals making money the way they want to do it, how are they being incorporated in our system. One of the issues that has to be addressed is how they are being equated in our tax code. The opportunity here for some real tax reforms because of this Huge Population of people that have p started, you know, if it, you know, theyre gravitating towards this kind of environment. We really have to look at our tax code, you know, labor laws, its a very complex issue and applaud senator warner for taking the time to learn about this economy and put forth solutions and not rush to judgment as he said at the end of the conversation with you. Host lets just talk about the selfemployed in general. How does it work for them . Its very complicated. Its very time consuming for an individual who is taking steps to be selfemployed. You know, senator warner mentioned your tax filing, when youre selfemployed individually, youre filing taxes four times a year. Most americans are rushing to the april 15th deadline, selfemployed are filing every quarter, theyre paying their taxes, theyre paying their state taxes, local, unemployment, and its just in that nature of having to do that. One of the changes is your business as selfemployed individual can change year to year. You are basing your quarterly taxing on last years business, youre having a rough year, thats more money out of your pocket. So wed love to see reform advocate for some significant tax reform to make it easier to those individuals that are selfemployed, running a business, that dont have the 100 hours, about 100 hours a year of filing taxes, that could be great use to Business Plan marketing, to really grow their business. What do they have to file and how is it different from the w2 . So you as a 1099, you file a 1099. So every quarter youre actually making a payment to the treasury on estimated income, so what you are looking at is what you paid last year, kind of your 5year payment and your estimating how much money youre making in a area. The reason why we recommend for the selfemployees to do this is because it allows them to taxing every quarter as opposed to april 15th deadline. The 1099 employee all of the income receiving doesnt have your taxes taken out. So you have to be proactive in paying taxes. Host who are the selfemployed and what are they doing and how much are they making . Guest very diverse individuals talking from your dentist all the way to your pharmacist. 23 Million People in the United States, professional services, it personnel, and then you have now the emerging market with the, now drivers, 60,000 a year. A solid income thats allowing them to purchase homes across america, send their kids to college, find the rewards of owning their own business. Theyre contributing about a billion dollars to the economy and we are only seeing that grow as we are seeing entrepreneurs come through and it adds to that economy. Divided the lines. Democrats, 202 7488000, republicans 202 7488001, independents, 202 7488002, and a fourth line for the selfemployed, 202 7488003. Katie vlietstra is president of the National Association for the selfemployed. We will hear from bob in long beach. An independent. Good morning. Caller on this economy, there is only one way to fix our economy. All these imports coming into the United States. We should tax them. High enough to when they are put on the shelf, it will be the same price as made in the usa. Then you will see the economy pickup and our jobs come back from overseas. Greta wodele brawner richard in austin, texas. Democrat. Fact is theres more americans here that would like to go to work tomorrow, but the Republican Congress keeps keeping them out of work. Aboutur them hollering gambling. Thats what youre talking about. People out there gambling on making a bigger percentage of the pie here in the United States wanting a tax cut for that. Want to gamble, they dont want to hold down an hourly job, let them pay the price. Greta wodele brawner ok. Your reaction to that . Are these people gambling . I dont thinka they are gambling. Theyre looking for opportunities that are different from past generations. There is a little bit of a rub between the traditional job market where you are working with full benefits and this new emerging economy where people are deciding if they want to work 40 hours a week or 20 hours a week or 60 hours a week. Is tryinglot of this to figure out who these people are. Why are they doing this . There is a great buzz feed about how there are six friends in San Francisco all living together and they are all jackrabbit contractors. Days doingtheir tasks for people. They enjoy it. One of the things that came across in this article is that this is not a longterm job for them, but they are experiencing having fun after college, living in one of the greatest cities in america, and finding value in learning new tasks. I think as we are talking about this gig economy, it is very different to get our heads around it. I have a friend whos dad dad retired after 40 years of the same company, enjoyed his professional life, and decided to become an over uber driver. Way into this freelance economy. These are the stories were going to continue to hear. It allows people to do things differently. I think one of the challenges with this more International Economy and how are we being competitive we are talking about manufacturing and i. T. This is one of the unique things coming out of the United States and i think should be supported. This idea that we can do anything outside of the very traditional jobs that generations previous and i think generations future are always going to enjoy. Greta wodele brawner greg is next in california. A democrat. Caller yes. Good morning greta and katie. Greta wodele brawner good morning greg. Katie vlietstra good morning greg. You said there was like 23 million in this gig economy. Are you referring to the 2340 million illegal immigrants. Case, my question is, is there a pamphlet you are putting out to instruct american citizens how to get into this undocumented economy so they can avoid taxes like the illegals . I know there are sanctuary cities that will provide help for the illegals. Is there any sanctuary city where americans can perform this new type of economy . Greg, youle brawner are breaking up there. Katie vlietstra so the 23 million are selfemployed americans. Is your dentist, your tax accountant, the person who is filling your prescription drugs. To my knowledge, and to the research that has been done, i cant speak to the number of individuals who may be here undocumented at our participating in the selfemployment or gig economy. They are two different things. We consider those who are uber drivers as selfemployed emerging entrepreneurs. The 23 million americans out working hard, contributing, paying their taxes is who i refer to when i use the number 23 million. Greta wodele brawner what is the biggest challenge government presents to starting a business in this country . Katie vlietstra thats a great question. One of the things we have been working on is eliminating those roadblocks that the selfemployed have when they are starting their business. Some of that is really easy. How do you get your business license . Selfemployedto a friend in d. C. He is a communications specialist. It was for different permits, dc at the in the Regulatory Affairs bureau trying to get his business license. We look at opportunities states have to make it easier to make be selfemployed. Everyone who starts a business wants to do it right. When youre talking on a local or state level and of course federal compliance, it can be confusing and contradictory sometimes. Regulationhink the as it relates to how you get a business license and set yourself up and incorporate yourself huge conversations are you an llc, are you a sole proprietorship. I have friends who just decided to become consultants and they set themselves up completely differently for different reasons. Cumbersome for an individual to figure out what is right for them. Naic is here to help. I think organizations like rotary provide a really good opportunity. Your local u. S. Chamber of commerce. For thosegreat places looking to become selfemployed to really learn how to avoid those pitfalls that we see people fall into when they are setting up their own business. Greta wodele brawner tie this back to the socalled gig economy. Those people considered independent contractors, do they have to jump through the same hopes that someone who is starting a consulting business would have to do . Katie vlietstra this is one of the things we have been focusing on, is how are those individuals being educated through the platform they are using and then setting themselves up to ensure that they are meeting all their legal obligations . If its insurance or if its tax. Up,nding on how you are set are you a 1099 employee. What does that mean . What can you do as it relates to insurance. I know the comment about airbnb providing extra insurance. Tonow the uber situation ensure you have the proper level of insurance. Those individuals that you are transacting with as well. This is where tax reform can really come into play is how are these people being set up. There are big issues about 1099. A lot of the transactions are now credit card related. I dont know if you remember, but when. Frank came into effect it was called the 1099 k. That is how the treasury thought that they would be able to collect more of the taxes. By credit card reporting, youre submitting to the treasury how much money a company took in via credit card swipe. Now that we have all these emerging markets that are using credit card platforms, it is really on the onus of the individual interacting with them to selfreport. There is a lot that has to be done here. It relates to Liability Insurance and ensuring you are meeting your tax requirements, we are trying to educate those who are participating in the freelance economy to ensure they are meeting all of their requirements. Greta wodele brawner here is a tweet from one of our viewers saying, paying quarterly is inconvenient. Talking about selfemployed in this company. There should be no penalty to pay at the end of the year. In california. You are selfemployed. Go ahead. Guest your last sounded like he was trying to get selfemployed people to pay an additional tax or fee or whatnot for your retirement. Im wondering, does she agree with that . They are trying to get us to pay more . Because they are not able to tap into our income is much as they want, now they want us to pay more . Greta wodele brawner let me ask you as a selfemployed person, talk about how much you have to pay for medicare and Social Security. Caller i have to pay 15. 3 of my income because i dont have an employer. And thes pay 7. 65 employer pays the other part. I pay the whole amount and i dont have a problem with that. But now they want me to pay more . Greta wodele brawner im not sure which part of what she was referring to with senator mark moran. He was not proposing things, he was saying there were ideas like for an hourly bank. Selfemployed are paying both sides of medicare and Social Security. Katie vlietstra she is absolutely correct. They pay all of their taxes. Where is if you are in a traditional Work Environment with an employer, you are splitting it. The selfemployed get the whole bill for that. And they dont mind paying that. We dont think its necessarily fair, but part of being selfemployed and i think the pride that comes with that. You have 23 million americans who are working their butts off everything will day to make a living and they are paying 15. 3 in taxes. Senatorle to hear what warner was talking about and i do disagree with him. I think part of the issue with retirement he was talking about if someone is in the gig economy for their entire work life, what are the opportunities for them to save but i feel like Retirement Savings has changed in this country. There are so many opportunities for an individual to make a decision. It is not just the 401k, it is not the pension. You have your oira. The selfemployed need to determine how they are saving. We advocate strongly for the selfemployed to immediately start saving their money as they are making it. But im not sure that is where the federal government should be playing in mandating Retirement Savings. Greta wodele brawner president obama has a proposal that has not been fleshed out. Is auto enrolled into a Retirement Fund and you determine as the individual how much you are contributed. That is been something he is proposed the last couple years in his president ial budget, but we have not seen the plan fleshed out. We are withholding our judgment until we see what they are talking about. Right now, there are plenty of opportunities for the selfemployed to save for that retirement and ensure that they have Economic Security for their lives. Greta wodele brawner how much can the selfemployed give to an ira versus those who have a traditional job . Your annualtra limit, which i believe this year was 2600 dollars, and then from a 401 k match perspective, it varies widely depending on how much your employer is matching. I would say that a 401 k , you are probably longterm able to save money, because again, you have that employer contributing to your plan. I think there is opportunity with an ira for the selfemployed to make just as savings. Im going to correct myself. I believe the annual limit for a traditional ira is 5,000. Greta wodele brawner got it. A republican in virginia. Caller high. About 1099. Ints i own a business. Business, in the order to be considered a separate entity, you have to have insurance, a license, billing every week. Wrap that into the uber thing, im not sure how that person can be treated as a subcontractor when they are using uber assets. Words, just from a layperson, i would think that person is like a taxicab driver. He really is an employee of the company. A lot of people are getting in trouble. I think it was fedex that had a fine placed on them because they were treating their drivers as subs and giving them 1099s. Slope. Ly is a slippery on as a 1099 employee. I understand everybody is trying to go that way, but i am not sure at some point the people that are doing this are trying to work for themselves are going to get themselves in trouble with the federal government and they are not even going to realize it. You are hitting something that is very timely. I was hoping we would be able to talk about it. The department of labor is expected within the next couple release an administrative interpretation as it relates to independent contractors and how that relationship is defined between the employer and employee. I anticipate that it is going to a traditional employee relationship, and so those companies that are set up for independent contractors are going to have to review that and decide from a Business Model perspective, are they meeting the threshold. For about 10 years, we have been working on this issue. Fromessman paulson minnesota has introduced legislation to ensure that that relationship as it is defined between the employer and independent contractor is a little bit more clear. That it is clear from the end and a contractor perspective what they are responsible for as it relates to their tax filings and for the employer, it is ensuring that they are not using the end a role that really is should have been an employee. It is a very gray area. There is a lot happening. The state of california right before the fourth of july ruled that over drivers are employees. Drivers are employees. Uber drivers are employees. It is going to cause some consternation with the Business Community. I think it is a real opportunity at how theook workforce is materializing in the 21st century. Greta wodele brawner explain why you think this ruling would favor the traditional workforce. In may 2014,ra they released new guidelines related to how an employer can identify and and and contractor. For thee six parameters employers to work through to determine should this person be an employee or an independent contractor. With this followup as it relates it is called administrative interpretation. It is not rulemaking. There is some assumption within the world of d. C. That it is going to even be more strict with how you interpret the relation between an employee and independent contractor. I think this is an opportunity for the Business Community to have some real tough conversations. And i think, how do we ensure generations, we have a free capitalist system that doesnt take advantage of individuals, that ensures that the tax requirements are being met, that everyone can be successful across the board. Hear vlietstra we will from katie, who is selfemployed. Caller hi. I was just wondering if there is some way that selfemployed people can have Disability Insurance without having to buy it on their own . We do pay taxes, both my husband and i are selfemployed. We pay taxes, but if my husband falls off a ladder and breaks his leg, we have to go through insurance that we pay on our own. It usually doesnt kick in until 6090 days. Is there some way selfemployed people can be covered under the National Health insurance . Because we do pay taxes. That is a great question. I hope you never have to deal with the situation where you or your husband is injured on the job. There are some states that have actually implemented a Group Disability plan. It is not nationwide. This is an interesting spin off of the aca. Now that we have health care across the board, are there other programs that would benefit from a more collective purchase . Because i know Disability Insurance is incredibly expensive or the selfemployed. And of course you are always trying to look at the bottom line and you are never planning for anything to go wrong, but if something does, it is really important that you have that coverage. I dont believe virginia is one of the states that has a group state plan for the selfemployed to buy into, but it is something you should talk to your local representative about. And your congressional representative as an idea that they should be looking into to really help you as a selfemployed and of course all of the rest of the virginians who are probably equally concerned about the issue of disability. Greta wodele brawner going back to the gig economy or those jobs, ans who have 23 this is a tweet from roger green sba shouldhe fda expand its mission. Think itetstra i would be a great opportunity for the sba. The Small Business definition is so broad. 1499 it tends to be very focused on credit and loans. Employees. It tends to be very focused on credit and loans. Selfemployed people are actually constituents of the sba and that is something that the administrator, who is fantastic and very savvy in seeing the future, im sure that she is six exploring. A tweetdele brawner the gig economy is a response to the limitation of pensions, guaranteed Employee Benefits and disloyal employers. Katie . Katie vlietstra i dont think thats entirely true. There is a change in our workforce. I cant even say if it is a good or bad change, it is just a change we are experiencing. I do think that there are people who are always going to be in the traditional workforce. Even the selfemployed, who are going to run a business out of their home or have an office space and work nine to 540 hours a week. I think we have always experienced the freelance economy. Even those who babysit fulltime, and those are similar things. We are just evolving as technology is becoming a more accessible platform. As the world is changing. I think the United States, as we are looking at the declines in key business sectors, this is filling a void. I think there is great opportunity here. There are things we need to address tax reform, Retirement Savings, even education is becoming an issue. Access to advanced degrees or degree areyear aa becoming more challenging and cost privative for many americans. Greta wodele brawner our topic is the selfemployed and americans in the gig economy. Were taking your questions. Katie vlietstra, she is Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs at the National Association for the selfemployed. We have a fourth line for the selfemployed, 202 7488003. We want to hear from you. ,emocrats, 202 7488000 republicans, 202 7488001, independence, 202 7488002. Dave, you are on the air. Caller i have family. A lot of them are independent, due to losing their jobs in manufacturing or whatever. Continually go down this path of bad trade bills that we the biggestlly employers will be selfemployed. But the problem with that is biggest selfemployed consumers are coming from these factories. They are coming from these manufacturing jobs. The selfemployed are going to be the ones who will be taxed higher to take care of those that were working in the factory jobs. As far as taxes go, i have a cousin in dallas who has done very well for himself to be quite honest with you, and he will tell you we have to be able to do this and this and have the freedom to do this. He will tell you he doesnt have to pay Health Insurance because he has enough money to take care of that. But the thing is we collectively have to come together and make sure that we save the manufacturing jobs so the selfemployed can do what they want to do and follow their dreams. He does not everybody because not everybody has that capability to do with their doing. Greta wodele brawner all right. I think we got your point. Katie vlietstra i love the sentiment. This is really about coming together and figuring out how we can ensure that every american has a job, that they feel Economic Security that we hope lasts for generations. This is where the conversations have to start. We have to be proactive in this space. How are we setting ourselves up to ensure that the United States is thriving economically, that people that want jobs have jobs . The point that dave was making is that not everyone is going to go to college and get a ba or abs. There are lots of opportunities in trades that we need to be exploring and we all could be doing more to encourage Economic Development if it is manufacturing, farming there is so much we can be doing. Daves sentiment that we are all in this together. We are going to succeed together and we need to do more. Ista wodele brawner glenn selfemployed and a republican. Good morning. Caller good morning. Greta wodele brawner go ahead. Caller im selfemployed. I am 56. I have been selfemployed virtually my whole life. I was in construction for like seven years. I have been in software about 25 years working remotely from my home. I dont believe there are very many percentage of selfemployed vote democrat,t because the government is really not your friend and that is a wide broad sort of statement. The irs, for selfemployed individuals that dont have bank accounts, we are not on w2, so the irs cant immediately take our income and control us. We are like the wild west to them. We are the inversion of the government worker who retires at 58 on an me, at average of 62,000 a year. I dont have any requirement retirement. There is not enough emphasis put selfemployment and people who make their own way. Steve jobs, bill gates, thomas edison. All of which didnt have a college degree. Look at how they have contributed to the economy. I admire your guest and everything that she is doing and i hope we will survive in the 21st century. Tanks. Thanks. Katie vlietstra this is actually a challenge on capitol hill across the states. For lawmakers to understand the impact that the 23 million selfemployed contribute. Is always you are always talking about big business, emerging economies as far as highgrowth economies. Continualou have growth in selfemployment. These are people who really like what they do. Theyre just doing it in a different way. This is our big issue. These people are amazing. They are out there, working hard. You should be paying attention to them. You should be making it easier for people to become selfemployed about that is the choice they want to make. Has spent ayone who career selfemployed, because it is challenging. You have the tax challenge of quarterly filing. You have the 50. 3 tax that you pay. You did not have Affordable Health care. As we look forward, we are trying to collaborate with other organizations to say how can we ensure that the selfemployed continue to thrive in this economy. Greta wodele brawner do those uber and are driving renting out their apartment on a b, do they have to file quarterly . Katie vlietstra airbnb is a little bit of a difficult situation. Different situation. Quarterly tax filing, paying their 15. 3 taxes. About where the opportunities are to ensure that this emerging economy understands their responsibility back to their business, it is important that that education continues. I think theres a lot of great work out there. I want to plug the American University school of his list. Caroline bruckner is really leading the charge on the tax code. Academic conversation about how we include thiese people in the economy. So they are not this gray space in the economy, so they feel like they are part of the economy. So theres more pride to the individual that is selfemployed. So they are contributive, making a difference. What they are doing is providing a salary to be successful for years to come. Greta wodele brawner michael is a selfemployed democrat. Good morning. Caller good morning. Before asked my question, to answer something she mentioned about great changes in the economy and also the last colors aller, it might have started in 1975 by the recession caused by the yom kippur war which of course started the Energy Crisis and also the theual closure and automation of factories by 1980. But are a 11 in 1975, lot of this on the cbs evening news. One breadwinner up till pearl harbor could still bring a thousand children into the economic middle class with a factory job or being of being a selfemployed farmer. Here is my question. How do i put it. I am glad you mentioned the legal and business problems a selfemployed person will run into. Taxes, business insurance, personal insurance, and i would add a need for a slightly different living will, Living Revocable trust and power of attorney. For those of us who are hand handicapped and earn little. I earn about 1005 annually and live with family members. Those of us with high functioning autism we are naive about Credit Card Companies and cant trust them because of the hidden fees and penalties but it leaves us out of so much in the economy and makes us nonpersons. Susie orman mentioned a legislation on our behalf. A bill in congress. Would you give ad vavice for homebased businesses, which no one mentioned, would you give us a advice about taxes, personal insurance, medicaid medicare, and all of that stuff and i will hang up and listen. Thanks big time thank you so much for your question. Interesting and of course this has been happening for generations as you were sharing your own disability situation. Coming out of the iraq and Afghanistan War and so many veterans returning with physical or Mental Illness there has been a huge effort, and i think great awareness, about those individuals who are unable to work in a traditional work place. It is either because you are handicapped and the mobility issue or unfortunately if it is ptsd or audio illness how can we make sure people are not being locked in the system. I know the Veterans Affair department has done great work but to your point about being a home hp based business and the majority of selfemployed are home based. And this is about compliance. To you have a rental insurance paolicy that covers the equipmet you are required to do. If you own your home, home owners insurance. And depending on the state and county and city there are other requirements for business license that you may need to operate your business out of your home. So it is very complicated. You know, one thing is there are Center Developments across america and i am confident if you reach out they will do a consultation over the phone and talk about your disability and making sure you are receiving of the aid like Business Plan development, opportunities to network and grow your business. I applaud compro fr continuing on this path and i know there are challenging and hopefully maybe one of my suggestions insure you ton to be self rely bizance and your Economic Freedom is there for years to come. Steve from South Carolina. Selfemployed. Go ahead. Caller i think the point missing here is that to big economy is not a choice. It is a forcedmy forced economy. The reason i say that is we have been sold out. There is no manufacturing left in the country. You have big tech companies. Ibm has been cell selling out. And tops on bottom manufacturing. Look at the steel. We buy everything from china. Host host is this a forced economy . Guest i dont think so. I think people are having to evolve in their desire to work. There are companies downsizing or going over see overseas and the opportunity might require them to become an independent contractor or free lancer. But i believe especially talking about the economy. A little separate. The 23 million and adding in individuals coming into the economy. People are making a choice to do that. They are making a choice and seeing this is an opportunity for them. If it is a fulltime job, or parttime job, i have a colleague who used air b and b. They lived in South Carolina and had a great attic apartment and they rent it out. In the first year, it was something staggering. They made about 15,000 just renting out oneroom in their house. It was people coming through South Carolina who needed a place to stay and moved on with their day after. It is diverse, complicated, and i think the issues around overseas jobs is something outside of my expertise. Host katie, it looks like the markets are responding to this gig economy and the people that want to be in. You see people helping a free lance photographer that allows them to organize accounting, how much they will owe in taxes and etc. Guest there is almost a gig economy spinning off of the gig economy. When you start realizing you are having 15,000 uber drivers across north america the things i am thinking about is i am sitting at my desk and thunk thinking about things that are cool for them to use. I think this is an evolving working place. I think this is where the conversations are really important that we are talking about it, figure area out ow how to make it work for those americans making the choice to move into this big economy and how we continue to support the overall selfemployed individuals in america. Host here is a tweet how can kids carrying College Loans save to start a business . Guest i think we need to talk about the cost of education as it relates to the debt that is placed on an individual who is looking to start their own business out of college. You see seeing so many entrepreneurs who are younger and walking out of college with a great business idea but they are burdened by Significant College debt. I think it is a challenge. And again, i think part of this interesting conversation is the cost of amoeducation, the degre you are receiving. There are a lot of opportunities for funding. It is a business loan. You are looking at your credit score and your ability to take on that loan. There are great programs to explore and Community Banks are a great place to go and work out your Business Plan, to hopefully secure a line of credit, but interestingly enough, the majority of the selfemployed start their business from personal loans from their friends or family or unfortunately something we are trying to change is credit card debt. They are taking outlines of credit that they can secure because Business Loans can sometimes be a little more challenging for the selfemployed to secure. Host and i want to add what you are saying about Student Loans is the headline in the wall street journal. Pay plan is opening up and the Obama Administration will propose to expand eligibility for pay view earn which sets the barrowss payment as a small share of their income. Jim you are on the air. Caller we have taken a lesser mansion of a house and used a cheaper car that is just as good of transportation in order to pay our 300,000 worth of Student Loans off. You can adjust and still i am totally selfemployed. All of my life. Through high school. Through college. Through seminary. And i want to ask this question from your guest who seems fau l knowledgeable. Give me three specific things for a selfemployed person like me i am a writer, singer and entertainment and i have a book published. I have nine different income ways and my wife is a college professor. Guest you have been part of the community always. Caller my grandma had a boarding house and i saw her and she was so happy and wonderful with her selfemployment and i went into music and had a thousand employers in the past 50 years. What are three or four specifics for a person to keep themselves free in their selfemployment . And a quick comment about senator warren. I spent years in individual. He has evolved in 1520 years as a politician into somebody that almost sounds like he was in the bureau in russia in the 20s. He seems like he is antiopen selfemployment. Host jim, i am going to have katie jump in and give you answers suggestions there. Guest back to your question asking about suggestions for insuring a long life of selfemployment. Number one is you have a very different path. It sounds like your grandmother. I dont know if either of you have been able to sit down with all of your multiple jobs and develop a Business Plan. Some of this is about laying the foundation for success. People fall into self employment and some are intentional about it. I recommend a plan. Mapping out what you want to do and how you want to do it. And i mention find the people in the community that are selfemployed and have been successful and sit down and talk with them about what they were able to accomplish with a realistic income level and plan for that. I think you have to have a nice little cushion. Eggs nest. There are times when you are going to have good years and bad years. You should always be planning ahead. Five years ahead which is incredibly challenging because there is flux in that. Is the ability you will travel across the country important . Or you will take the summers off . Or just personal development . About the Business Plan, saving for the future and defining success and insuring you are checking in every six months and meeting all of those goals. I think the last one is is you should have a good tax accountant. Someone who can insure you are saving and meeting your Tax Liability and have the proper insurance and you are really insuring that success longterm for your business. Host mary ann says running your own business is a labor of love and those 18 hour days are a thrill. Er eric selfemployed in utah. Hi, eric. Caller my question is, i have a couple, after they lowered the Corporate Tax rates, big corporations can end up having a lower marginal tax rate than i do as a selfemployed person. When you look at the Corporate Tax rates, the gdp of america declined, the growth rate of the gdp declined but the dow jones took off. America is suffering scheie are talking about lowering tax rates even more which confuses me. Host lets talk it up. Katie . Guest we oppose any tax reform that doesnt include substantial tax reform. Lowering the tax rate is short sided of any congressional action or action at all by the president , house or senate that would try to push forward a decline or decrease in Corporate Tax rates without dressing the individual tax rate. It is something i am passionate about and get blue in the face talking about how important it is to address individual tax reform. 80 of the selfemployed because of how they are setup are individual tax filers. So it is just essential to our economic success that any effort of tax reform, which we certainly hope will happen the former means and ways chairman, dave camp, spent four years working on a comprehensive tax bill, introducing it, understanding the balance needed between essential tax reform and i hope chairman ryan and his great team over in the house are looking toward that again. Host here is another tweet from our viewer saying that is why he has never started his own business. Huge amounts of regulations and taxes. John from new york. Hi. Caller good morning, cspan and thank you for taking my call. A comment and question i have. I am a retired facility engineer and looking to become a fr freelance Consulting Engineer and i understand the Resources Available to help someone get in the business similarly would be the Small Business administration, maybe a great resource to help guide you in becoming a freelance engineer. But i heard in new york city there is a Freelance Union. Do you have opinions or comments on what they would offer to me . Host host okay. Katie vlietstra . Guest i think definitely looking at new york city as the place you want to start yourself hp employment is key. I think the Freelance Union senator warren referenced is specific to on demand economy. But i know there are great resources. The Small Business association is great to reach out to figure out what you need to become a Consulting Engineer i believe is what you said you will do. You can never have enough information. Doing the research, figuring out the organization and where you live and tune it up to what happens. And this is a great resource for you to touch in with and figure out how you can set yourself up to be successful. And up to massachusetts, troy, a republican. Caller hello, first of all, your comments are Getting Better all of the time. But the previous guest would you please, once again, reiterate how much taxes or benefits Social Security med kate and so forth are paid in total by a selfemployed person to the federal government compared to the same things that are paid between the employer and the employee with the company . Host Katie Vlietstra . Guest i am always happy to reiterate this stat. Selfemployed individuals pay 15. 3 of taxes inclusive of the withdraws that we as some of us who are w2 employees. As a w2 employee you say 7 expect and the employer picks up the other part. So is the selfemployer double taxed because they are picking up the individual contribution and the individual contribution. Host fred, selfemployed, welcome to the conversation. Caller hi. Yeah, my comment is about dealing with Internal Revenue and mileage. I have been charged a huge amount of money because i said this is how far i drove and that you put it out where that standard deduction where they tell us how much you can deduct for mileage. But then they dont wleefb blee believe it. Guest as a selfemployed individual there are deductions you can take as it relates to operating your business and one is mileage. C consultant traveling to clients and such can deduct. This is another place where they have been a strong adcocate. You have gas receipt and have to do a mileage log. But on the back side it is are these issues of red flags and tax fraud and someone inaccurately filing. I definitely feel your pain i have conversations with department of treasury and Internal Revenue service. This is a big area we think is important for the selfemployed. Lets make it easier to file taxes and if we have a standard deduction it should not trigger an audit. The Home Office Deduction was a big thing we were successful in changing. It was 15 pages of instructions before if you ran your business from home. Two years ago we offered a standard deduction for those individuals. You fill out how much square footage, times two, take up to 15 hn jo00 jo h0 150000 and you are 1500 and you are done. Having to pay a penalty for improperly filing the deduction is what we are limiting. Host lets try to get two more in. Chris. Caller thanks for taking my call. Enjoyed your show. I have been selfemployed over the years and worked for the government and lived around the world. I have been on panels in washington, d. C. Many times. It is frustrating to watch what is going on. It seems the people in washington are on another planet. They all make grade money and can support their families. In the south we are looking at no standardized wages, people are working two and three jobs, everyone i know. And the big corporations are not hiring Fulltime Positions. They are hiring two or three people to take on a Fulltime Position and no body can afford it. T they are getting desperate. Host lets hear from stephanie in pennsylvania who is also selfemployed and you can respond to both. Caller about the selfemployed person you dont make much money. You know, they really benefit from Social Security and medicare in their older ages. It comes pretty fast because they get lots more out than what they put in. So please always pay your Social Security and medicaid. And a suggestion about an ultimate retirement system is to go as far as reasonable possible out of town, by acreage and start a farm. By the time you retire that land will be worth more money. Host Katie Vlietstra, for the first caller who talked about the companies are not hiring fulltime workers but hiring three people to do a fulltime workers job so are they selfemployed . Guest depending on how the arrangement is setup. A little different when you manufacture and work in a prila with cycles. It may be reduced scheduled and some may independent contractors but again that relationship is between the employer and the independent contract needs to be clear cut. I do want to point out, i eco and hear the frustration about what is happening in washington. 90 pbte of our members when polled and we ask about opinions and thoughts about washington are frustrated. We annually have to deal with the situation of even the tax cuts and programs that are setup to support the selfemployed and the Small Businesses are on a one year continuation. It is incredibly frustrating to deal with the uncertainty in the market place. We thehear it a lot. And many selfemployed are throwing up their hands not voting and are apathetic.
