Of the predecessor to the Governors Office for the need to reclaim the lost opportunities of the past. Read the book. Firstever will refer you choose that. [laughter] republicans are not unscathed. Democrats the Supreme Court they all get on my radar and the torpedoes had been launched they have hit the targets there is nobody perfect and nobody walks away unscathed and appropriately so. Nobody has done that perfect what about Medicare Prescription Drug program . Read the book. [laughter] hello governor. I am a texan. Well come to washington d. C. Is great to be ranked in the top 25 for both polls. Of one to ask about the Health Care Bill were hoping Speaker Boehner will replace although it will not happen over night so what can you do to help slow them with the burden put any by the federal legislation and . One of the real aspects of the book is to talk about how the states can be engaged in a conversation as i said to my remarks there is a lot of political figures to talk about Social Security is a ponzi scheme my eldest child is 27 my baby is 24. Date no Social Security will not be there for them. So talk about the options that is one of the great roles the governors can play to the that conversation. Because many of us would like to me it in charge of those pension programs. Medicated say good example of just last week right after the election our texas house had a steady group how to better deliver the health care cost. We think we can save the government 40 billion in Health Care Delivery cost if they will let us do it in the state we will have more people covered in deliver health care better. We feel very comfortable we can do that. Saturday night i had every day and we talked about how the governors could be more in engaged with this process. The message from john boehner is very clear that he was listening to is tonight to find the solutions to the challenges that face to says the country emanate from the states and there will be a Real Partnership there like we have not seen possibly for decades and decades. Good morning i am of pressure and at George Washington and. Many friends and i have aspirations to enter politics with vice you give an aspiring leaders of integrity . Find some campaigns, ago actively involve yourself in Public Policy and find out if what you really think it is what you think it will be. Fine day campaign as well as an office somewhere whether you are the intern but find the places where you are passionate. I tell young people on a regular basis this is a great country. Were different from any other country because people who came before a scaledback. Gave back the peace corps or the marine corps, a gift back to our states, our country and community and you will find your place. Last question. And i. M. From massachusetts eye and an intern at heritage we know president bush proposed to reform Social Security to could not get a hearing in his own congress. How do you think that republicans can propose reforms . That is a good point and standing up basically telling the truth and not being a frayed afraid. I tell people if you need a reason why i am not running for the presidency of United States i wrote this book. [laughter] i love this country. I love texas i wanted to be a powerful and great place to live for my children and for that to be that way we have to address these issues and not be afraid and to do nothing more to be fear monsters they have to tell that to my children there will not be Social Security for them if we dont stand up to address the issue. For the twentysomething or the 30 yearold those that is economically sound a Solid Foundation washington has to stop spending money god b this week to nine former congressmen and says america has lost its value is it is up to individual citizens to reset their moral compass. He is trying on examples from business and religion and sports and education and culture. He is interviewed by the National Economic advisor to president clinton and senior fellow at the center for american progress. Host john we should start by lettie and the viewers know when you were the house budget person to put together the budget i was at the white house that was designed to knock down everything you said. We should let our viewers know that i am from an arbor michigan were vicious rivals in that regard but we turned out to Work Together in the balanced budget agreement and before i talk about us i want to raise the issue of bipartisanship and i would like to ask about Chapter Three story. It involves john kasich and a black liberal member of congress and day may be listening so tell how with it fits into bipartisanship. Is is the pleasure to be with you first of all,. But on the way to a man says river getting off a plane to give each other a great handshake. To reach a historic agreement to provide for the first balanced budget in the history of america to fight with people on the other side with different philosophies but that doesnt mean it has to be personal thatd it is blatant partisanship with bay i am a republican with my vehicle but not a master and jean is the same way but dick cheney is to an interesting debate we team up together to limit the production of the b2s Stealth Bomber because they were members of Day Dinner Party together not a bunch but eight or nine to get to know one another i dont agree but l. A. s he stood for something. Is something to be respected and admired. You go ladies b2 bombers and they came to the same conclusion to take the savings of the many for not producing the bombers that could take the savings from what would cost billions more and what is interesting is what we saw the first iraq for so were on target their. After a 10 year fight to support that limited production the administration they said we could have 20 and id agree with that compromise but i said 20 would be fine going from 132 down at 28 considered to be an amazing victory by congresss ability to limit a major Weapon System that hasnt been done before. And then a letter comes out with the defense secretary including one signed by dick cheney who said there should be 40 her gore took to the house floor to criticize severely for breaking his word. I spent a long time with my colleagues and to break the commander in one year later and i dont appreciate that. But what has never been a good friendship they resented the fact that i called them on it but one side will release you you should stick to with. We do the best we can the battle was won we have a more effective military as the results and at the end of the day you have to move on. But it seems that john kasich said go into a deal but people go see that much now. Because you had a regular dinner with them there was a compound report that says there were those types of interactions to get to know each other. With that decline of bipartisanship. I was were with ralph nader and bill clinton but i never sold out my principles but at the end of the date to stay true to your principles to have a discussion with Pat Schroeder and some of the young republicans say how can you talk to that woman . In these people are not the enemy so i chastised and the essay was from the Budget Committee i used to you tell my colleagues we can fight all day long but we have to figure out a couple of things and when people got personal i made it a point to sit down and chastise them for doing that. Said those who could fix the country. And that is not mentally members of congress to be good will models that you could have bipartisan efforts and the other side doesnt have to be the enemy. I remember Ronald Reagan and tip oneill. Nobody fought harder but it did get personal and at the end of the day they could sit down to have heard a drink together. If were going to resolve the major problems of Social Security and the Health Care System whether a democrat or republican, if he think we can solve these problems of the consensus you are dead wrong because both have to define the problem once you know, that it is imperative to compromise a solution but without that you will not get any major things fixed. We have both experienced it is tough when you go out alone. Clinton did 1993 they accomplished it but it was a higholitical price to you were pretty much along with a tough budget and you were punished to some degree as well. What is the expression to hold idioms . Isnt that part of the rationale . Even beyond the budget he has the people that happen to be a republican but do we need cover . I never felt i needed cover because i was not down there to make friends but it should be a byproduct of doing things but it is more important than the cover if we could all agree that we need to balance the budget for our kids, once we all agreed we needed to get it done with the sincere commitment we know we have critical problems with the Health Care System. So many people are uninsured the you can i get it done. You cannot rally the people to get it done. With the political cost i just never look for cover i was thrilled but youre only there for a short period of time and nobody will remembers those swing for the fence. If you are not off base he will make a mark. Host both parties do this but i will never cut a Social Security benefits or raise attacks. Was sent to get down and the tables to do some compromise that is a good point. Ill think there is that many pledges that you have to sign but ive ridley had never thought about that before because of limits the ability of people to be flexible. Finally you have to keep your pledge if you sign it that is the bottom line. That is the better off you are. We could get in trouble but in 1983 and 94 democrats controlled all arms of government democrats controlled the house and senate now we see republicans. Now we see president bush with a lot of scandals and issues. For those that dont reach out is there something admirable but divided government or is that 2 percent even if you to control everything . There is a growing sense that divided government is not so bad. I tell a story of a lady that saudi the weekend of an election in she was scared about john kerry being elected president. What will happen to america . What will happen . I said america will be okay. Pharao be less spending because the republicans will turn down his programs. I think i was right to. The idea of divided government when parties lose their way is the good thing but if they inherit a platform or program then id like to see them have the wheels to get it through but i think there are real advantages to divided government and it does reduce the arrogance. The problem with anybody is elected there is a bubble i am not sure that all this and all that well. Were all guilty may be divided government keeps us on our toes to force us to reach out to if we may not always want to but i have the view i dont think gridlock is bad. I am not a fan of the government but there are Serious Problems then they have to get to it. I know what will happen if there will be of major democratic gain to pick up the house but the question is the under current is it of vinegar and dissatisfaction for a variety of reasons . Are the republican in stable to reenergize their base not to call the democrats as an evil force but by standing up to be for something . It is too early to know. Six months is a long time in politics. I will resort to one more story between us because it is relevant. You and i decided we will work on something together with a debt relief for pour countries and we were stuck in 2000 as a you and i had lunch and i said we need to get everybody down to the white house and you said great call them my said if i do know we will trust us you call them they will say yes. You wrote a letter in the said mr. President call everybody down and i was getting people from the progressive side, we got people to fly in and do said Pat Robertson is coming. I thought that was great news and told everybody and sure enough there was some pullback in the white house. Not everybody was happy. I went to president clinton and said we agreed to do this now people dont want me to invite him to the white house and he said will he take our side . I said yes and he said why wouldnt anybody want to invite him . I said that is all i need to know. Sure enough we had a remarkable meeting. But that is my version but from your point of view that meeting was probably the most diverse political meeting ever held at the white house. [laughter] i always felt foreign aid was more corporate welfare we were not doing what we need to do to help the people who could not help themselves to show the face of the United States. I was wandering around and not of the blue i get that call from Arnold Schwarzenegger he says meet this friend of mine you have never heard of him he is a rock star. He said you have never heard of them he said bader no bono. I said i am not an austrian bricklayer i have heard of him. [laughter] so we talked and he blows me away because first of all, he is a man of deep faith and action and knew what he was talking about so i organized a series of meetings the most incredible is when i took bono to see jesse helms people but it is the greatest thing that ever happened in the story came out in this meeting jesse helms his eyes welled with tears and he said i wish i had done in my life you were doing because you are saving lives. He joined the coalition. And chris dodd and rick santorum, we put a Great Coalition together and the deal was i thought we needed Pat Robertson and he cared about the issue and he said i havent been in the white house since clinton was elected maybe i needed to do with for this cause. Once you got the clearance i said at the time if you cannot get Pat Robertson i am not coming. [laughter] we had a great meeting and reached an agreement on a number of issues and put the first down payment on debt relief to help people in africa the most amazing part at the end of the meeting up in the corner was bill clinton and Pat Robertson yucking it up by turned to the Staff Members and said you want to believe in miracles . Take a look at that. As a result we saved millions of lives in africa and i give the credit to bono. He is in my book as someone we can believe one as opposed to paris hilton for you explain to me where she is on the cover of a magazine because of a sex tape . , take a guy like bono sitting around in the south of france having a good old time to make a difference for people are around the world is what we should admire. I think it is one of our greatest accomplishments to be a part of that process. Host and left me with the memory the most unlikely partners can come together when you are willing to talk to look for common ground. I will go back. Can i interrupt for one second . Either day i saw a kid and dying in the delivery of sudan with malnutrition and how can we let this happen in the 21st century . The prosperous world is committing a great evil not to Pay Attention and to these people imagine your kid laying their dying and nobody comes to help. The u. N. , i guess we have to keep beating the drum and keep pushing a were betty bono to make a difference. I could not agree more universal education, giving people hope, but let me go back as i remembering that same conversational lunch price said you have been terrific on debt relief in 1995 you are focused on cutting that budget you had a change of heart and he said what really bothers you you did want other people to see a big military plane to think that is america but you want them to use the our heart and debt relief is not a way just to do good but to show our heart. Looking over the last five or six years, what should we be . Going forward our people receiving americas heart . What would president kasich diouf to show the rest of the world what america is about . Part of the problem were up against brainwashing with no education and. Array a big chunk dont even believe we went to the moon so we are writeup the problem that we are pure evil. Beecher a summer people we have relations with relationships with rare they teach fanaticism so on the other hand, even back in 1995 i feel the same way today i am opposed to more assistance in to the dictators or the Development Projects i think the model for all of this the peace corps is so great it is unjust sending money by get into the trenches and how i admire the people whose serve in the peace corps to go and spend time when we went over to asia that was the first decadeslong animosity because we were right there helping them we have to change the nature of foreign assistance to make sure it is effective and furthermore as angry as i get every european friends and allies for what we did for them basically 100 years , i was always uncomfortable with the notion of Freedom Prize rather than french fries. When you are a big powerful country, if you dont make an effort to listen or maintain objectivity and you want to yell and scream at those who have less than you will be the loser in the and. We all get frustrated when people dont think us and respect as but one of my old friends told me dont lose our objective of the. We have to do a better job of listening and every once in awhile we have to give to let them have a when otherwise the resentment and the painter builds like your not we both know the Security Apparatus of these countries are so critical of fable not working in concert with us or on our values then we will have holes in the ability to protect ourselves. Is a combination to get tough with some and reform the foreign aid it at the same time do a better listening and one more thing. United nations is not working when George Clooney looks at the sudan to say the un cannot declare genocide vided different organization. Not saying get rid of them but they need to have shared values to attack what is happening in the sudan or iran right now Nuclear Weapons is the greatest threat for your kids and mine we need to have some common thinking and not the big rock period bureaucracy. Host with that we will take a pause but when we come back we will talk about standing up on business and popular culture. John, one of the chapters in your book is about American Business because you are a republican and one of the things that uc a coal miner in West Virginia that was not treated very well how does that personal experience to deal with globalization. You can never moved far away with the wind blew the of wrong way i read a book from Michael Novak to say the business is a calling in hope that the votes come in business your job well to make money but to deliver product and the byproduct of all of that is money and you have to have a conscience if you look at enron to see the cfo that he end his life to a pleabargain so they dont go to jail at the same time because they have young kids. Letter they thinking . Look at where they died and ripped off people not to get eight new car but maybe that therefore the house and the fifth car. I would like to think if they can go back they would change their way because they cannot get their reputations back but then you look at bill gates to has given billions of dollars to inoculate kids around the world have given back end is a hero to many of us for cartelists story about a man who was running a company headed toward bankruptcy better provision in the contract provided for a 1 million payment. He is not a wealthy man but he got the Million Dollars and went home and wrote to 1 million check back to the company because we cannot live with ourselves. So i believe there is the battle between those people who want to stand up for something to make tons of money for such as those who take the short cut if you mention in globalization globalization, and what i notice is that people that used to make 71,000 per year those jobs dont exist anymore bending steel. So we need an educational system looking at k through 12 as a monopoly but the Higher Education encourages the recruitment of scholars like they recruit Football Players and bake for the chance to educate our children. The monopoly system with k12 leads to a bureaucracy and red tape and dysfunction. By and large what we see in our schools across the country one of the points i make a with the d. C. Teachers and principals stand outside of the school that they have struggled with tuesdays shutdown to say shut it down. It is education and also business with a conscience. Host really one of the law hardest questions officials are dealing with right now were you have a situation the ceo says i have to do so that is the way of the world but we are losing everything had to wrestle with that one has to be the most excruciating things to think about and he walks in the door to sell lost my job today not even because i did a bad job but was eliminated. But to stay locked the door and pulled down the blinds we sit with the Auto Industry today to have compete better to put people out of fort that is why they figure of how to deal with it we dont like things that cost more but cost less so what has to happen companies have to get severance pay, help the people to find work and get them into a Community Colleges with business is training them. They are not throwaway people. I wish i had a magic want but there are things we can do to let the family survived to put them in a position to help them that is why we have to have an environment to create new jobs as well to give them the tools so they have value whether computers or whatever for cry have seen that happen for for i have seen ceos believe over this to do everything they could to help the families. Most Business Leaders are not the unethical people we have seen from enron for those type of things. There is a question, your book is about excess, its about standing up against access is there something more systemic in the business, wall street environment. About people pushing to access profit the extra bonus money over some of the values you talk about in your book. I have talked about the Compensation Committee of the company that has been sold, they used to call me the director from that represented all the mailman in america. What i always stressed, and i stress anytime around, its not about what we do at the top its also about people that dont have the highest position in this company, if we ignore them we have a morale problem. The bottom line is if you want to have a Good Business you have to have people happy. There has to be a sense of fairness. I dont think people are on unreasonable by a large and their demands. The real good leadership in the business is one where the head folks are considered to be a people who have morality, a a sense of justice, and they have to work to communicate that. I tell you i think they they do, thats where my family comes from. And if it was a good one the boss was a good person they could do well, this game as you know is the finest system of the world. In other countries if they want to get where we are they will have to adopt a lot of these principles and they know it. Back to Michael Novak, business is a calling. It is not just about making a buck, it is about making a better product and making a better way of life. The beauty of it, we can take an idea from the back of her head and transform the way people live. I mentioned in the book, im on the board of a company who makes wheelchairs, when i take a look of how people have been able to get out of their homes, people who who we used to call shutins, through the power of innovation and profit, prophet leading the prophet innovation. I try to bring that sense of moral purpose and people love it. You mention compensation, one of the issues that bothers a lot of people is that a generation ago they made 40 times more than the typical worker now that has gone on through the ruth. Are you work worried about compensation of workers, the value people at the top or is there cleverness that might need to be reformed. The Board Structure is ending, i think what people object to is when the profits of the company go down and the pay goes up. I think that is a big problem. I have to tell you as much as we run around and complain about the ceo, i was very hard to be a ceo, the heat is on every minute, every quarter you have to do reports, if things dont happen like they say people want to take her head off. Take compare that to barry bonds who has a 90 milliondollar contract, we ought to be more worked up about these knuckleheads in sports and pop culture who make more than almost all the ceos in the world and they dont even have any value. I think if you are on a Compensation Committee you should reward people when they produce, they shouldnt be rewarded when they dont. I think i think its a simple rule to follow. The basic part of this book is about the things that they do that involve corruption. We can debate what salary should be in income levels but one thing thats most important is that we dont destroy the system by a series of unethical acts that are designed to enrich you and as up ripping out the shareholders. We still have those problems. We sought with Computer Associates a few weeks ago. And ill say one other thing. The Business Community when they steal, guess whats interesting they go to jail. Its the one parent place in our society where it seems as though there where it seems as though there is accountability in a society where accountability is lost. Your book gets into the popular culture, talks about her tama, sports, im, im going to mention one thing that my wife really bothers her and my guesses with a few daughters you might have some thoughts on it too. Shes bothered by the fact that theres a glorification of young women, at almost all levels, tends to be about often how they look, risk a, sexual behavior and not on achievement, accomplishment. You mention this in your book when you talk about paris hilton. I know you have nothing personal against her but when you look at this paris hilton effect, you have a few daughters are you in agreement with my wife . Is is a sears problem sears problem cosmic. There is no question about it. My daughters are six years old, theyre twins and i know people people are looking at me saying. Shes awfully young to have the six yearolds, but anyway the thing is im glad i dont have to explain to them why paris hilton is on the cover. Id like you to explain to me why Britney Spears announces pregnant on the David Letterman show, who cares. Or the actresses running around and this guy 50cent who said he been shot 70 times its amazing he doesnt leak when he drinks water. Or how about Michael Jackson who dresses up like capn crunch and dances on an suv when he was to trial and these are people that kids look up to. You wonder why theres problems with eating disorders that we read about all the time, look im an mtv fan, i like green day, pearl jam, but when i watch i watch mtv and i see what amounts to the denigration of times of women, i wonder where the National Organization of women is. Women are not there to be used and abused. Of course i worked about it, im wo thats a choice that gets set up in this book. What would you ask, and i know as he told me this many times, democrats like me the first thing we start thinking about is what kind of Government Programs there are, and im not going to dignify that is true or not true but i want to know is what do you want to ask where the positive role models for young women and what would you ask of everybody. What would would you ask of the entertainment industry, of government, of these companies and particularly on this issue which oprah has oprah quite well. The right way to set the role models for your daughters in my 40 day old daughter. How about this oprah she sometimes knocks it out of the park. I wrote two names down Reese Witherspoon and mandy moore. They seem to be two women who are beautiful, they carry themselves, they have character, talent, thats what we watch when we watch movies. Were looking for stuff that will teach kids our lesson, thats entertaining. What we can do about is first of all if youre producing this stuff, knock it off. Youre going to have to answer for someday. Secondly if you are these people, clean it up. Charles barkley. Charles barkley says ten years ago the basketball star says were not your kids role model, then wanted to go hide new cave somewhere because you are a role model. When the cameras on you your presence is magnified, its not just you on there anymore, its an x nacht jewel magnification of who you are and people watch you and learn from you. Remember when Jan John Mcenroe used to throw his racket and every kid decided to throw their racket. What they do and say really matters. The other thing other thing is parents have to monitor more. We have to tell her kids whats right, whats wrong, in terms of what some sort of censorship, i dont like that. I dont i dont trust the government to get that right. With a little bit of conscious on the people who come this, the people people who produce it, and parents being engaged and also looking up to some of these people that are people we can admire and learn from. Im just hearing these unbelievable terrible statistics about the internet and our kids and how they can be very seriously harmed. I saw john wash the other day talking about the fact that to take a computer out of the bedroom and put it in the living room so that we can all know whats going on in that computer. We lock our doors at night to keep people from coming in, we better start paying attention to that computer for our kids because they get into some serious trouble and we better be careful. I think that the next one idea we abide by that as well. Computers in the main rooms. Now one of the things i did like about your book was that you talk about the excess but you dont come off as being too preachy and too righteous. Thats difficult. We have to lit live without their kids. For example in the video games, you acknowledge that if every video game videogame was about love and peace nobody would do it. Does that mean you have to go along with granddaughter theft, those are the types of tensions you face, and you do that in a way that acknowledges no one has a lock on all virtue but let me ask you, on the right people would say when these messages come out they come out as to absolute is. Too preachy, too. Send then while we find out happens as some people giving them were guilty of far worse since then what theyre preaching against. How do you walk that balance and what to say to some of the folks on your side, and im being slightly political here, i apologize but people traditionally on the right in terms of expressing these values without stepping over the line into preachiness. I cant believe you even asked that because it allows me to say something. Republicans did not feed the beast of their base by dividing people on moral issues. Using it as a substitute for a lot of things they should be doing and expect to do. I find them using these wedge issues in such a way that motivate their base to make up for things they are not doing and that is not right. Secondly, in terms of being a preacher, i dont like this role. I dont like it, im uncomfortable being here because im not some perfect soul here. I dont think i have to be perfect to save us and im not calling on anybody to be perfect, one of the things i talked about in the book is a religion. I think its a very important part of our culture, i think by and large, and i have talked to people in the religious business about this, by and large, we have a situation where we havent explained what religion is. Religion is not a big finger coming out of the sky telling you about all the things you have done wrong, religion, by religion, by and large is about our potential as human beings to have a good heart, good judgment, humility, respect other people. That means that there may be some rules, and rules are part of religion but it is not there to divide us. Religion is not there to try to make people feel smaller, religion is there to make people feel better. Philip yancey talks about a woman who was a prostitute who couldnt make any more money who put her daughter in the street and realize what she was doing and she said to someone, i need help. And they said will you want to go to church and she said church thats the last place i could ever go. Well as they point out life is about grace, its about a spiritual mall again and at the heart of this game, thats where conscious comes from. Thats where you and i learned to respect one another. Thats where we get a sense of where conscious is a business, politics, sports, and, sports, and the pop culture. Its the thing that gives us our gps system about whats right, is the thing that when we look at it and study the great lessons out of the Old Testament and the new testament, its the thing that allows us to listen to that little voice inside herself that tells us what to do. Thats on trying to say. Im not going to get it right all the time but im going to do the best i cant because this is what i need to do for my kids in my country. Were getting to the end of our time, i want to give you a chance for a more reflective moment which is, one of the things you talk about in the book the sum of the moral values get shed because of a win at all cost attitude. Thats a tough thing to say because we all know theres a particular way of accusing mena being wimpy if you are being anything of coming in first and you take that on a little bit here and what you say page eight as you say, lets face it, too many of us embrace these core values and fear loan because when the gun goes off and the race begins, we see how easy it is to shed these values to lighten our moral load. What do you tell your daughters about how, when you are wanting to win, wanting to get the best school, how do you keep in mind this tendency to sacrifice these values when you are really going after the thing you want the most . I think what im going to do is im going to tell them about my mother who always stood for things even though when it cost her. Im going to tell them about my dad who was a great man he had a great personality and knew it principle was all about. Im going to tell them about my fatherinlaw, who is a very successful man but it wasnt win at all costs. I have to tell you it was not too long ago, a few months ago i went out to florida with my wife and our family to put the ashes of my fatherinlaw in the florida golf. I ask the people who are there, there is about 40 people on the boat and i said to them, i want to pick about three or four words that describe craig. You know jean jean at the end of our lives, thats all we got right. Three or four words about us and what we want is we want kind, compassionate, and honest. We dont want the other ones and no sense in ruining this and bringing up those other ugly words. We all know what they are. What im going to try to tell my daughters is at the end of the day we are judged by whats inside of us, not by the plaques jean you and i are overachievers and frankly we havent always followed this, and i know that i still cant get it right but i guess at the end of the day we just do the best we can, and if we keep it in mind in the end that is not what weve accumulated its what were made of i think thats what we can teach our kids. I think thats what we all need to remember and if we do we will build up that her country, we will solve these problems if we raise the bar and remember what her parents taught us. John thank you, that is a pretty inspirational and inane. Im going to have to end it with a bitter partisan note which is to say. I went back say. I went back and did some checking that during the clinton administration, michigan beat ohio state six out of eight times, since bush has been there ohio state has won four out of five times, i need a Democratic Administration because my family, my brother rick and i we just cant take the heartbreak of these ohio state losses anymore. All i can stay say is go box. s what we will and on that. A signature feature book tv is our all day coverage of book fairs and festivals from across the country with top nonfiction authors. Nue in 2010 bobby jindal spoke a] the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara california, was about his expenses and office including Hurricane Katrina and the bp oil spill. He wrote about his tenure as governor in his book leadership in crisis. This in crisis. This is one hour ten minutes. [applause]. Thank you all very much. I ha thank you for that generous introduction, thank you for thev warm reset reception even beforh start my remarks. Pr what a privilege to be here. Goor to give you an idea of how much, pres. Reagan meant to me not only as a young student and aily man and governor, i occupy the fourth floor of the capital and the famous building that he we long built in baton rougesuprem louisiana. Theres exactly is exactly one painting, one portrait, one decoration in my office. Hi in this for floor office a beautiful Historic Office in a beautiful building, there is the original painting of pres. S evey ronald bragging sitting upright on his horse as a consteantnd reminder of everyday why were here, and what were here to accomplish as we try to turn our state around. It is it is a great honor to be here, and trdoliation with the Ronald Reagan ranch, thank you for was to me. Two weeks ago our country had ae tremendous election. A lot of people remarked about what the selection meant. Last week i release my book leadership in crisis and there has been a lot of Media Attention about the openings anecdote in that book. I described in the book how the president obama came down to louisiana for his first visit after the oil spill, about two weeks after the explosion, air force air force one landed on the tarmac in the new orleans airport. He he came down therea. Steps and clearly, this is not a usual interaction. Usually when ce one youff air for briefly talked to them at the gd foot of the steps and lea md too get to the meeting. This is not a normal interaction he actually grabbed my arm and n pulled me aside. Re now they clearly tipped awesomen washington reporters, they saidk their president is going to be t angry, mad at the governor. This was clearly because they told reporters in washington to . Watch for this. I can see that he was angry. I thought walt may be, he is angry at bp. Maybe bpu maybe he is angry at that oil, maybe he his oil angry about th bureaucracy and red tape. I was stunned, he was angrye t because of a routine bureaucratic letter we had sentt getday before about food stamps. Of he says to me, careful governorl this is going to get bad for all wa us. At the same time he was mad at me, his cheesse of staff was chewing out my chief of staff on the tarmac except tore. Use words i wont repeat. Later as we got my car, and what i said i said to the president s and with all due respect when it criticize about food stamps werg upset about the lack of a plan to fight the soil. When i got into the car with my chief of staff is that itsamazn amazingg. To me that they are a disconnected from the facts on. The ground. They are mad about dayingong things, i dont min the pres. Be mad i want him to be mad. I want him to be mad about the right things. I think that was the message of. We had the election two weeks ago. Theyre basically saying of congress and the Obama Administration you have been focused on the wrong thing. People of america had wanted the private sector economy to be growing again, they went good y can paybs so the their bills and they want their children to inherit more opportunities than we inherited from her parents. Look at what haser been going on in washington in the last two years. We have had governor bailouts,fe obama care, we have had federal government debate issues such as cap and trade, it seems likeabo. There focused on everything butg the priorities and the shoesr vn voters care the most about. As back in louisiana when i was running for governor, i made a promise to the people of ourno state. For 25 years we have exported our great asset, we have greatest export center crawfish, shrimp or mardi gras. For 25 years are raters export has been our children. We are the only state in the south for 25 years that more people have been moving out of our state rather than moving into our state. I promised our people we we would create a new louisiana to create opportunities for children and grandchildren. Et i want to tell you how we have accomplish that. January 14, 2008 on Inauguration Day ire promised by waging a war on m corruption and incompetence. Our first incompetence. Lyr first 30 days was a special session on ethics. Why is that important . Ac i know you aree polite, and louisily people, i also note you may not be read enough to say this to my face but every one of you probably has your own favorite or joke about louisiana politicians. [laughter] the congressman used to go to washington d. C. He was a back home in louisiana at any given moment in time, he would say half my people are under water, the other half are under indictment, at any given time. People would laugh and say thats just the louisiana way of doing business. Heres the problem. Those jokes werent funny anymore. Theres a study done and we werd tied for first place and what would you do to a tracked investment of jobs was to crackdown on corruption. Business leaders leaders told us as long as we know is more part than what you know we want to invest in your state. We had aba session on ethics and critics that we could get it done. Lo i said during the campaign, we g passed some of the toughest bills, i will go through all of them you have to disclose your income assets and liabilities. And i said than we dont need you there. They said you have to choose it you either have to serve us orlh yourself and you can try to doen both. Can theres two numbers we were ranked 44th worst for rk n legislative disclosure, today we rank number one. [applause]. Ve o better Governors Association used to rank us in the bottom five of their integrity indexab and now we are in theou top fivd it is not about ranking, it was about created the condition for the private sector could grow and create good paying job so we had a Second Special section. Weeks later we got rid of taxesm on debt, new equipment andidnt utilities. Later that year we be enacted the largest income tax cut in our states history. Why was that import . Our neighboring states didnt have those taxes by the way. Heres somethingmi even if youre not a phd icsnnd economics its easy to phd india economics its easy to understand. If you want to discourage not get tivoli, tax it. If. If you want to encourage an activity dont tax it. You can do much summarize my economic philosophy right there. Why would we want to tax businesses who want to borrow and invest, expand and moderniz th our state. Their newest equipment in louisiana was older than their oldest equipment anywhere else. We got rid rid of their taxes and we didnt more. I made it clear that we are not raising any taxes in the statete of louisiana ,. There were were no loopholes in that. Weve done more than cut taxes, we cut spending by 26 . We have eliminate thousands of governor precisions, we privatize services, setting reaz priorities about what stateese government should or should not be doing. Ovsh the third throwing, ould o and tr reason i was so important, our Credit Ratings have gone up not down the lesser use. The reason thats important we want businesses to know that we welcome and invest and grow in our state. We are predictable, progrowth environment. We have improved workforce training. 70 of theth Companies Want to move or expand in
