The campaign trail yesterday. We will show you what they are saying about Foreign Policy, but we want to ask you about your candidate and his or her foreignpolicy agenda and whether you disagree or agree with it. Here is how you can let us know. Host for democrats. Republicans. 2027488000 for democrats. 2027488001 four republicans. And for independence, 2027488002. Amongst alicy came up variety of topics when donald trump set down with editors from the Washington Post yesterday. One of the topics that came up was about Donald Trumps view of the world and a larger discussion about nato. The headline this morning reads trump questions the u. S. Role in the world. During a daylong tour of washington talking about the need of the north atlantic treaty. And its pressing skepticism about a u. S. Military presence in asia. The interview was posted on the Washington Post website. Here is a little bit of donald trump talking about the role of nato and the role of the u. S. And the world. Trump i see nato is a good think to have. I look at the ukraine situation and i say, so ukraine is a country that affects is far less than it affects other countries in nato and yet, we are doing all of the lifting. They are not doing anything. And i say, why is it that germany is not dealing with nato on ukraine . Countriesthat other that are in the vicinity of the ukraine, why are they doing anything . Why are we always the ones leading. Post that is audio from that video. The Washington Post writes about the foreignpolicy outlook of donald trump saying it this way. The views trump laid out monday echoed the sentiments of a more nor to faction of a minority faction. Stems in part from experience in iraq, which trump has consistently described as a major foreignpolicy blunder. They are heightened by his focus on what he sees as the damaging effects of International Trade on the financial standing and prestige of the United States. Specifically when it comes to the role of foreignpolicy, what do they advocate . Do you agree or disagree with that. If you want to let us know, 2027488000 for democrats. Four republicans. And for independence, 2027488002. Donald trump also release names of foreignpolicy advisers. They include counterterrorism Longtime Energy dopoulos,t george papa schmitz, retired general keith kellogg, and quite a few more. Lets start with grace this morning from indiana. Good morning, thanks for calling. Who is your candidate and what views do they hold on foreignpolicy . Caller Hillary Clinton is going to be my person and i have knowsing i i think she how to get along with people. Here is my problem. Im closer to 100 then i would like to be. I watched the rise and fall of adolf hitler. That look at all of the Republican Party wants the American People to do stuff with him. Donald trump once the party to side with him. Host back to Hillary Clinton for a second. As far as foreignpolicy, what do you like of hers . You said she likes to get along with other countries, but what do you mean by that . Caller she knows how to get along with them. She knows how to she can read them. Donald is doing his thing. He is going to tell them what to do. She is going to try and get along with them. He is going to dictate to them like adolf hitler did nine times. Host john from South Carolina, republican line. Your candidate and their foreignpolicy view . Caller yes, sir. I am supporting ted cruz. Unfortunately, your previous color is to clarify that Hillary Clintons foreignpolicy capitulation and basically, taking care of her and bill on the foundation through every means possible. But ted cruz understands that the world is neither place. The United States, we see what happens in the middle east and when it comes to isis, also we see one of the world perceives a eak president. We also see what happens when the world perceives a weak administration and the pacific area with the south china sea. Ted cruz, he has got enough knowledge of what is going on in of the world and our domestic the strength of america to where we are cooperating with our allies and a strengthening our allies, instead of apologizing to the United States and capitulating to regimes like iran. So, but your previous caller neglects to look at the last, she says with donald trump. She is 100 years old. I would recommend she brushes up on her history, even though she has lived it. The radical marxist socialists have been trying to destroy this country for 100 years. They finally achieved it by giving the educational system. Now, what we have is not an educational system. It is an indoctrination will system. Indoctrination system. Host what they do have will not been critical, but none of the candidates have a viable foreignpolicy stance. Go ahead. Caller how are you doing . Host thank you, go ahead. Caller i am a democrat, probably. All of these people are talking about how the United States is so great and so wonderful and th at we can capitulate the other people how they should live their lives. America is great when we allow people to be who they want to be. We cant tell people how to live. They were talking about born again christians, evangelicals. Host ronald, who is your candidate . Caller i am supporting bernie or hillary. Ast as far foreignpolicy, what do you like about Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders . Caller i like hillary because she is experienced. You have to have experience with your world leaders. You can go in there haphazardly. You have to know what you are doing. What is donald trump know about foreignpolicy . He is aaid often that businessman, not a politician. He cant run the nine states like that he cant run the United States like that. Host Hillary Clinton in arizona, leading up to the primaries that will take place. One of the things she spoke about in a rally there was Foreign Policy and the experience she brings, if she were to become president of the united rates. I served as you know, for eight years as a senator from new york during the 9 11 attack. And of course, i served as a secretary of state. [cheers and applause] Hillary Clinton i will tell you, only the hard choices get to the president s desk. Only the hard choices and up in the situation room. If it is easy, it gets made somewhere along that path. But when you are faced with making those tough decisions, like we wear when i was one of these small groups to advise the president about whether or not to go after bin laden [cheers and applause] clinton it takes experience and it takes temperament. And weve got to make sure our next president and commander in chief can fulfill those responsibilities in a responsible way, in a thoughtful way, in a prudent way. And i pledge to you that is exactly what i will do if i am honored enough to be the next president of the United States. Om simiere is terrt fr valley, california. Caller i am going to ask you or i am going to do something that has not happened on cspan. And i see it as a form of prejudice not happening. Nobody is vetting Bernie Sanders. He is getting a free pass. As far as Foreign Policy, he has none. This man is a slick politician. He has been one for 35 years. I am an independent. I am for hillary because she has walked the walk and talked the talk. Anybody can criticize somebody that is in office and trying to do the job, but when you are on the outside looking in and all you do is complain and criticize and you havent been there, it is a different story. This man has gotten away with so much. He has been around for 35 years and the commentator asked him, if you havent done any of these things and 35 years, bernie, how do you expect them t to them now . And he evaded the question. He has no foreignpolicy experience. He talks about her as being beholden to super pacs. You had a panel on cspan of people who were bipartisan discussing what to do about money for campaigns. And he came across very clearly that they believe it was not in bipartisan fashion, that it was not a negative thing to have super pacs giving you money. You were not beholden to them. If she is beholden to them, he is beholden to the nra. And he talks like he is going to do these marvelous things. At the same time, he is discussing his love for castro. And we saw that years ago. And his medicare one payment for all was tried in vermont and a failed because as strategist for the Obama Campaign, they stated very clearly that he is copying the Obama Campaign strategy, but the difference between the two is obamas ideas were doable. Bernies ideas will be dead on arrival. Host i want to keep it to Foreign Policy and what the candidates bring to the table as far as their foreignpolicy positions. The colored did mention president obama in cuba meeting with raul castro. The headline from the New York Times this morning, accompanied by a photo, a new day of open is taxed by old grievances. Leaders traded criticism of each others countries. They both said they were committed to normalizing relations. Give me a list of the Political Prisoners and i will release them immediately, rebel castro aul castro said. Obama said he pressed the president over their meeting and reaffirmed they could meet with some of them on tuesday. He also told mr. Castro that the United States had no intention on dictating their countrys future. Destiny that cubas will not be decided by the United States or any other nation, mr. Obama said. Cuba is sovereign and rightly has great pride and the future of cuba will be decided by the cuban people. How are you . Go ahead. Caller i wanted to talk about who i am not for. I wanted to give specific examples why i think Hillary Clintons foreign policies as secretary of state for a complete disaster and we cannot have this person running our foreignpolicy as president. She was an advocate of regime change, throughout the middle east, which was a complete failure. I ypt, obama then they went ahead with regime change in libya and got rid of goo kadalfi. A bloodbath has taken place in the country. They then had an obsession with assad ansd sryia. Opinion, has, in my kristin genocide christian genocide. Blood onmmeasurable her hands. I do not believe and of course, the email scandal is National Security because she is either completely stupid, or she purposely put in a private email server in her home that our enemies hacked. She is not qualified to run foreignpolicy. Host who are you supporting and what is their foreignpolicy stance . Caller i am supporting donald trump and the reason i am supporting him is donald trump was america first. I support his policy on building a wall. I support his policy on deporting illegal aliens. I support his policy on temporarily banning islamic immigration into this country. I mean, look at what happened this morning with the bombings in belgium. Rb stupid and suicidal . Stupid and suicidal . There is a serious problem within the religion of islam. Of theber one job president is to protect the country and the lives of citizens and Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have come out and said they have open borders, they will admit syrian refugees. Host joe, you put out a lot of the information. Lets go to west virginia. On the democrats line, ted. Caller very simply, i like the idea that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have had. The idea that as opposed to cruz, lets not go in with anger and lets not go in and start wars, like George W Bush did twice. This thing barack obama has done so well through all of this is not get us more involved, not get us to the point where we are going to start putting more troops in here and mor eine in there. You said, what my candidate is . Host who your candidate is and the foreignpolicy views they hold and if you agree with them. Caller Bernie Sanders says, everything i have believed in all of my life. The idea that domestically we have to end corruption and get government to work properly. And in foreignpolicy, we have to stop going out and starting in anand taking things irrational way. Take a look at trump. He is already starting the war drums. Take a look at ted cruz. He is saying how big shot he is going to be when he becomes president. If that doesnt scare you, i dont know what you need to be scared of. Host that is ted in west virginia. Ryan this morning on the Washington Post talks about the topic of troops in iraq. The headline says there are more people in iraq than it has been saying. They have many more than previously reported. The Obama Administration quietly expands ground operations against the a Islamic State. The number of american troops in iraq have come under increased scrutiny. Operationsyour u. S. In iraq. Officials of knowledge privately that the total troop number, while it varies day today, stands at 5000, more than 1000 personnel above the official cap. That includes other defense cooperation matters. If the obama missed ration were to classify personnel as permanent, they would be increase the official force level reported in its monthly boots on the ground notification to congress. In marylandrom sue on the independent line. Your candidates Foreign Policy and you agree or disagree with it . Caller my candidate is donald trump. Im going to do something that i have never done in my entire life, register as a republican this afternoon. That is so i can vote for him in the primary because the primaries in maryland are close. I believe in every, single thing trump is saying about our foreignpolicy. In particular, making this thesey so strong that terrorist groups and places like that wouldnt even think to mess with us. I just came back from dropping my son off at the metro station. I am worried and scared until i hear from him because of what happened in brussels. This is the United States of america. We can save the world from tyranny and i have to worry about my son can get to the metro. Why . Because we have weak leaders and weak foreignpolicy. It will get worse under Hillary Clinton. It is already a disaster under obama, who is clearly not qualified. I am going to vote for donald trump and campaign for donald trump and work the polls for donald trump. I want this country to be restored to the great country di it once was. I want my children and grandchildren to live in a country where people be heading will not mess with us anymore. Host we are talking about candidates and their foreignpolicy agenda. The topic of foreignpolicy was brought up along the campaign trail in washington dc. People have been calling us this morning. Theyou have to specify who your candidate is, the Foreign Policy they hold, and if you agree with it. For democrats. 2027488001 four republicans. And for independence, 2027488002. Meeting withhad a d. C. Republicans and washington to talk about a variety of things. One of the people talking about it is a reporter. He joins us on the phone now to talk about this meeting. Good morning. What wasttle bit the goal of this meeting. Why was it set up . Wong it was an attempt by donald trump and his team, who like to remind us that he is still very new to politics, to appear more president ial. His team wanted us to see what it would look like for trumps motorcade to be driving to the nations capitol, driving to meetings on capitol hill. He met with the Washington PostEditorial Board before that. After the meeting with lawmakers and some d. C. Establishment folks he held a News Conference at his new Hotel Project on pennsylvania avenue, just blocks from the white house. He later gave a National Security speech. It really was you know, sort of a day when mr. Trump comes to washington and acts the role of president. Host when it comes to the meeting with gop lawmakers, what was the agenda . Scott wong i am not sure there was a specific agenda. It was originally billed as a unity meeting to bring republicans together, but at the tail end of the meeting that was not the message that was being conveyed by some of the participants. It really was a hodgepodge of republicans who were there. There were some people who had previously endorsed him, like senator Jeff Sessions from alabama and Chris Collins of new york. Jim demint was there, the former senator from South Carolina who now runs the Heritage Foundation. They discussed possible Supreme Court nominations and the Heritage Foundation apparently, it will be advising mr. Trump on topics. Sible and then there were some new faces, like Newt Gingrich and his wife. Wea bob livingston, who saw bob livingston, who made the biggest news of the day. He resigned from the house floor back in 1999 over an extramarital affair. He came down the steps were the meeting was being held and basically said he was endorsing donald trump after that meeting. I am not sure there was one specific agenda. It was a discussion that covered a broad number of issues. Host as far as house or gop leadership, did anybody from the Leadership Teams attend . Scott wong there was not a Single Member of house or senate gop leadership. I reached out to speaker ryans Office Yesterday as the meeting was taking place and they said they were not aware of the meeting. Later, donald trump at the press conference was asked about that very fact, that not a Single Member of leadership was present. The point ofwasnt the meeting. He said there will be many more meetings in the future and that this was a meeting that was organized by Jeff Sessions and was specifically directed at a small number of participants. Host scott wong with the hill. He is talking about the meeting donald trump held with gop lawmakers. Mr. Wong, thank you. Scott wong thank you very much. Calls onk to your foreignpolicy. Your candidate and the views they hold on it. Lets hear from harry. Thanks for holding on. You are from pittsburgh, building on the republican line. Caller i am for trump. These people called in and say he wants a war. The other thing is, as killer clinton to go into the speech she made about immigrants coming in. For w what, trump is everything he is saying is coming true. He is like nostradamus. Hillary clinton has made a career out of making money. By givingmoney speeches. I dont think the clintons care anything about the country. They want to keep making money. They keep giving speeches in these countries. 600,000 muslims are in brussels. 13 Million People. This guy was in a part of the city with 8000 480,000 muslims, i dont know what it was, and nobody turned him in. He tried to get information off the people at the mosque and start throwing them out of the country. Yes, they should stop bringing muslims in here until we get this straightened out. There is nothing wrong with putting a wall up. Is all because of obama and Hillary Clintons position on everything and this sanders, he comes off like a nut case when he talks. Host that is harry from pittsburgh, pennsylvania. He is referring to the events in brussels that took place this morning. A series of explosions took place at an airport there. According to the reporting being done, 15 people are dead, 55 more blended after the explosions struck there during the Tuesday Morning rushhour. Two blasts at the international airport. Another struck a metro station. The belgians issued a double four alert, indicating a serious and eminent attack. What we feared was happen, we were hit by blind attacks, Prime MinisterCharles Michel said. Can lead this into the conversation about foreignpolicy. I am talking about where your candidate stands on that. 2027488000 for democrats. 2027488001 four republicans. And 2027488002 for independence. Caller hello, yes Bernie Sanders is my candidate. I have been a candidate for 4050 years. I watched the address to apac last night. I watched hillary and trump address them. I saw the pandering and the hawklike rhetoric that trump and hillary were dishing out. You could most here the war drums beating in the background. Many israeli, officials, most of them, were encouraging and supported going into iraq. Now, Bernie Sanders, even though he is a jewish american, he did not address apac. He is smart enough to know what a disaster iraq was. Are in florida, we had senator before we went into iraq, senator bob graham, he was on the intelligence committee. He had an Intelligence Report about Hillary Clinton and a lot of the democrats had never seen. He went to them and he wanted to show them this intelligence before they voted. They would not look at it. This intelligence disputed the wmd evidence. Chris matthews, about one week ago, he interviewed hillary. She is very, very slick. He interviewed her about her vote to go into iraq and she started out talking about how the u. N. Inspectors werent allowed to go and investigate, to look at all of the sites, that two minutes later, she said george bush stopped of the inspections. That was the end of that and then they went right in. Hillary is very slick. People, you better take a good look at what youre getting here. Host several president ial candidates spoke at the aipac meeting yesterday. Benjamin netanyahu is set to address the group today but john kasich who spoke to the group talked about his approach to Foreign Policy. There is a little bit from his speech from yesterday. [video clip] shored you to be up to be assured of a case it administration, there will be no from selfdeclared. As a candidate with the deepest and most far reaching Foreign Policy and National Security experience, ladies and gentlemen, i dont need onthejob training. I will not have to learn about the dangers facing this country and their allies. I have lived these matters for decades. On day one in the oval office, i will have a solid team of experienced and dedicated people who will implement a longterm Strategic Program to ensure the security and safety of this country and that of its allies such as israel. Host go to our website for more information and we and you can watch those speeches in their entirety. Rockford, illinois, mike on our independent line. Good morning. Caller good morning. The two candidates im looking at for Foreign Policy, donald trump, i wish he would talk about mexico and how rich the country is and how poor the people are. They are saudi arabia rich and people are living in shacks. Those people should be outraged. Number two, Hillary Clinton im looking at also. Clintonfound that the foundation bought a huge parcel of three towns that were leveled andwill put up a new town supposed be the headquarters for the new order. Anddy is talking about this they are going to buy this new town. People should talk more about that. Tennessee, ville, democrat, hi. Trump. Iell, i am for think he is honest and he may be rough around the edges but the man is not stupid. He made his own living. Hes rich. He is not a stupid man. He sees whats going on the country. Weve people on Social Security. They are barely making it. I know a bunch of them. They can barely feed themselves. They can barely shelter themselves. We worry about all these other countries. What about our country . What about our people . Host what do you think donald trump brings as far as Foreign Policy . Caller i think hes got it right. He says weve got hate. We trade with them. Actually buy more from them than they buy from us. We are not getting ahead. Host ok, lets hear from clyde in vermont, democrats line. Caller good morning, cspan. I support bernie. Is trying messages he to get across to the American People seems to go everybodys head that this is an oligarchy. He is trying to get that message across to the American People and they dont seem to understand. We have always had Global Economics and global war. We have had war since weve been walking on the planet. I wish the American People would wake up and get earning an office so we can start in the right direction. Michigan, this is ralph on our independent line, good morning. Caller good morning, appreciate you taking my call. My candidate would be john kasich. He is the only adult left running in either field. He is conservative i nature. He will not give away American Interest just to be able to say i made an agreement. I cannot support Hillary Clinton. She touts her experience as secretary of state. She had communication on private phones and never received any classified communications. How can you be a secretary of state and never receive any classified comedic nations . Any classified communications . She said the hard decisions are made in a situation room. Apparently, the decision to not send support to benghazi was an easy decision. Thats all ive not and i appreciate you taking my call. Is next oklahoma city, oklahoma, republican line. Caller it sounds like the guy for john kasich and i have a lot on in common but he will not it up there in the general and say the same thing that he needs to win. A lot of that happened to mitt romney when he choked. To the man in vermont, nothing is free. I am 62 and i figured it out a long time ago. All of the chaos in the world is because one person had something in mind that he did not want to get involved and look what is happening. Somebodys got to come along now and clean this up. We cannot have somebody in there thats letting us get run over. Do you know how hard it is . We have been mad for a long time. Kidsd to work and raise and our kids are raised and were thinking about our grandkids. There wasnt enough of us so we went to our heads. Do you know how hard it is to convince a 36yearold day care owner to be for donald trump . All i had to do was have her watch him a little bit. Five atay at friday night Football Games and everyone said merry christmas. We had a christmas tree. We celebrate the birthday of christ. Why are we supposed to feel sorry about that . Talking about Donald TrumpsForeign Policy. We are asking you about your candidates Foreign Policy agenda. Elizabeth warren took to twitter yesterday in a series of tweets critically going after donald trump and specifically, here is a write up in hope of the Washington Post. Some of those tweets from yesterday included this 1 thats only three of the eight tweets she sent out yesterday talking about donald trump. Bill is next in columbus, ohio, democrats line. Caller i dont know what these republicans are thinking about it they have to remember that bush put us in the position we are in in the middle east. He invaded a country he should never have invaded are you you when after a person he should have never went after. But whenas a bad man asked about Osama Bin Laden, he said hes not worried. He is the one who did it, you idiot. And they want to blame everything on obama. Obama is not to blame for this. Bush and cheney are. Cheney wanted oil and bush wanted revenge for his old man. They put us in a situation that we are in. And theyns sit there say this is obamas fault. No, its not. If we had not invaded iraq and put it into chaos, there would still be a problem but not like it is now. Host who are you supporting . Caller Hillary Clinton. I would not vote for donald trump if he was walking across the street with my dog. To foreignit comes policy, what do like about Hillary Clinton . Caller everything, she has worked with the dignitaries over there and they know her and they what she thinks and she knows a lot of them and how they think. Trump is an idiot. St. Paul, minnesota, independent line. Go ahead. Day, whats most important is for people to recognize that the first role of the president is commander in chief. I have not decided who i am totally going to be poor but one of the things that concerns me is candidate clintons decisionmaking ability when she went before the u. S. And stated that the issue of the rumors about her husband were due to a vast rightwing conspiracy. He had to admit that he lied and with a teenage daughter, this is just my opinion, she basically did nothing. You get embarrassed and laughed in the face and when someone embarrasses your child, you have to do something. People like Vladimir Putin and the president of north korea and will recognize that decisionmaking ability that she demonstrated that in a tough situation, she could not make a call. Thatt people to realize pro or con, you have to look at how people make decisions and if they have a demonstrated ability of not making the right decision at the right time, think about that when you vote. Thank you. Host chattanooga, tennessee, democrats line. You are on. Im voting for Hillary Clinton. Host what do like about her Foreign Policy . Caller experience. Host specifically, how . A lot of lies have been put out about her. If you know anything, its a lot different then you hear on tv. What people put out. Host one of the other candidates that spoke at the aipac meeting in washington yesterday was ted cruz. Policy,d about foreign specifically middle east issue and israel. Heres some of his statement from yesterday. [video clip] my leading republican upon has promised that he as president would be neutral between israel and the palestinians. Let me be very, very clear as president , i will not be neutral. [applause] america will stand on apologetically with the nation of israel. [applause] what does that mean specifically . Lets start with todays persian king, the nation of iran. Hillary clinton and donald trump have said they would maintain this iranian deal although donald as promised will negotiate and get a better deal. My view is very different. On the first day in office, i will rip this catastrophic Iranian Nuclear deal to shreds. Northup next is rex from terra linux republican line. Caller yes, i am a republican and i support donald trump because he feels like we need a border because when i was growing up, we could leave our doors unlocked and feel safe. Now, you cant do that. Clintontee if hillary did not have her protection, she would not feel safe. Thank you. Way, on Foreign Policy when it comes to the president ial nominee to go to the Supreme Court, Vice President joe biden will make a speech this coming thursday. It will be the most forceful call yet for the confirmation of Merrick Garland and the speech will be delivered. That speech is set to take twice on thursday by the Vice President. One more call on this topic, eased point michigan, democrats line. Caller good morning. My candidate of choice is Hillary Clinton. That is because im a former soldier in the u. S. Army. Hillary clinton has walked the walk and talked the talk. We hear rhetoric about what cannot be done and what should be done. All from other candidates who have no Foreign Policy experience whatsoever. I am a longtime democrat and yet is a viablers candidate in the public eye but andr 35 years of service, absolutely no agenda on Foreign Policy, i cannot support that. My youngest son is now in the military. Commanderinchief such as Hillary Clinton, i feel as if my son and all the sons of america that are in the military would be under a better, more stable and improved leadership. Update on the brussels report saying that three explosions ripped through tuesdayian capital killing at least 20 people. The federal prosecutor said it was too soon to know how many people died in the bombing. 1515 were0 that reported injured and died. Two blasts were also in the Brussels Airport. This is an ongoing from a bombing that took place early morning. Members of congress are joining us today to talk about a variety of issues. We will be joined by republican representative marsha blackb urn will give us an update on the committees agenda and then we will be joined by Gerry Connolly from maryland who cochairs the Democratic Coalition and will talk about the report on the centrist agenda and is a member of the House Foreign Affairs committee and we will talk about the president s trip to you but as washington journal continues after this. As the director of military and veteran affairs here in ohio, many of our veterans have come into my office to talk about who they want to vote for if they want democrat or republican. Its your civic duty to get out and vote. At stake withe the selections oh i encourage you to get out and do your research and vote for the candidate that best supports your causes on the future of this nation. Ohio and i amedo, supporting Bernie Sanders. He is one of the most important candidates in the field now. Is the most viable alternative to mainstream politicians. He has the most aggressive ideas that are most important to the country. I would encourage everyone to go out and support bernie if possible. Thate most important issue democrats feeling this election is going to be College Tuition as well as jobs. They need to know how to go to school and how to afford it and what their future will look like and what the job market will look like and who will bring jobs back to the u. S. As president of the college democrats, i feel those are the two biggest elections. I was originally going to vote for Bernie Sanders but politicallyt inclined, i ended up voting for hillary because she seems more knowledgeable and she has been in the political environment before. States been secretary of and she has already seen the inner workings of the white house and how the game goes. Washington journal continues. Host our first guest is representative marsha lack earn blackburn. Good morning to you. The committeebout in a bit but i want to get your initial thoughts on the event that took place in brussels with the bombings. What do you make of it and what does it mean for the u. S. Overall . My heart breaks for those who are victims and their families and for those who have family and friends in brussels and cannot get in touch with them and the anguish that goes with that. Forwarddrives the point with the American Public of why people say National Security is the top issue in this president ial cycle. People are very concerned about what is happening area they watched as isis and al qaeda metastasized through the horn of africa after we came out of iraq in a very disjointed manner. They have watched isis come in and fill that void and they are concerned and now with the cells in the u. S. And you look at the arrests that took place at the end of last week and then you wonder what is there. You wonder what is going to be found in the aftermath with the bombs in the markings on the bombs and how integrated the network is and how strong they have grown and their utilization of technology in order to carry out these attacks. It is of tremendous concern. Host what is the best response for the u. S. Right now . What do you think is the appropriate measure now . Guest i think the appropriate thing to do is to exercise some vigilance. When he to handle Due Diligence on exact way what they are able to find out from this. I think the president should come home and be the commanderinchief. As we address this issue. What we have to do is make certain that our military men and women who are deployed are going to be safe. We have already lost a marine Staff Sergeant in the past few days from and isis attack. Haveans that you have to to reveal your military plans and security. My hope is that the president is going to listen closely to those commanders in the field and those on the ground with firsthand knowledge of what is taking place in europe. The other thing that it drives forward is the issue on open borders. You look at what has happened in u. K. Isnd its why the facing the debate and the vote about whether or not to withdraw and to exercise their sovereignty. You look at this ability to move freely around the eu and you ask if that is wise. To have a visas Waiver Program . Is it wise to have an open southern border . When you see the individuals coming across the southern border and you are on the ground work in, with the Border Patrol and some of those stations were individuals have been taken into custody and brought in. They are not necessarily all mexican. You have many other nationalities that are there. Reasonse of the securing that southern border is such a principal issue. The other point that it drives is the discussion arrival of syrian refugees. And the work of the office of Refugee Resettlement and what they are doing in that entire quadrant of the issue. Who is coming here through the Syrian Refugee Program . We know that isis and the terrorist groups have said they want to infiltrate through the migrant and refugee programs. And carefullance watchful approaches where we need to be. Host our guest is joining us to talk about this and other issues and you can call to ask a question. Aside from those issues you lead the selective panel on immigrant lives. Guest this was established by a house resolution, hr461. It puts in place a house panel that will take a deep dive and a look at what its going on with medical practices in the abortion industry and the Business Practices and the procurement industry. Transpiredk at what and came forward in the videos with planned parenthood and people are concerned about this markety where you have a for fetal tissues and fetal body parts. To lookl was assembled at those medical practices, the Business Practices, the relationship between the two, to look at recognition of and abiding to the born to live child act with the lateterm abortion ban. That is what we are doing. We are organized and have had our first hearing. Host one of the things that came out of that came out of the hearing was the topic of subpoenas. To askwhat we did was for some subpoenas from some organizations. We have done over 40 document requests. Not all of the information we received was complete. We issued subpoenas to the university of new mexico and also to southwest womens options which is an Abortion Provider near the university. And stem express which is a Procurement Organization. We are awaiting further information. Onheld a good first hearing the bioethics of fetal tissue research. What was interesting was the amount of agreement that came from the democrats and republicans witnesses. Your viewers and listeners can go to our website which is selected panel on infant lives and pull up that hearing. They can listen for themselves. Host as part of the subpoena information, medical workers and medical students, there were concerns of their safety. Guest everyone is always concern for safety but there in mind, we have recommended that there be the appropriate reactions of in read actions redactions to keep certain Information Private but there is information that the select panel needs in order to complete its work. Will complete our work and report back to congress by the end of the year. We will do that in a timely and effective and efficient manner. They talked about this topic as far as the information and there were concerns. [video clip] instead, the chair has embarked on a partisan and dangerous witchhunt. Reactions are putting the privacy and safety of americans at risk. Over the repeated abduction of the democratic members of the panel, the chair has sent dozens of document requests to academic institutions, medical school, and Health Care Providers across the country. She has already issued three unilateral subpoenas demanding the names of individual researchers, graduate students, medical students, doctors, and clinic personnel and is threatening to issue more. There are no rules in place to protect these names from public disclosure. In fact, the chair step has made it clear that any name turned over to the panel may be released to the public. There is no reason to create such a database. The chairs abuse of her position to compile this information is frankly reminiscent of senator Joe Mccarthys abuse of tactics. We live in a world where researchers the use fetal tissue are compared to nazi war criminals and extremist have tried to burn clinics to the ground. We live in a world where women have to face a gauntlet of harassment to get the health and where there are threatening websites that identify Reproductive Health families, ders, their and maps of the locations to the clinics and homes. On the day after thanksgiving, gun man drove 60 miles to a planned parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs and killed three people and injured nine others and terrorized doctors and patients. When arrested, he uttered the s as no more baby cart phrase that many of my republican colleagues have invoked. In connection with this panel investigation. Linking individual names to an investigation that the republicans described as examining the harvesting of baby ethicarts and the our practice and they horrific practice puts people in danger. Our words and actions matter. Host a lot of statement there but as far as the point she made, she said there were no rules in place to keep information you talked about, the workers going public, is that true . Guest there are rules in place. The select panel functions as a subcommittee of the energy and commerce committee. There are rules in place. What we need to do is get to the bottom of what is going on. Personllegal when every that came before us agreed it is illegal to sell human body parts in the United States. They also agreed it is a legal for a profit to be made. They also all agreed it that it is illegal and unethical for someone to get pregnant and then have an abortion for the purpose of selling those that the consent form used for many of these women in these Abortion Service providers is misleading. Be an illegal document. Plenty of reason to look at this. I dont know if anybody that thinks it is appropriate for these fetuses to be sold or marketed, and there is tremendous concern that you have this industry that has somehow grown up and is showing tremendous amounts of profit every year. Had, ande documents we people can see it when they go to the website, is the document that shows what they are paid per sample, what the technicians for these organizations are paid. It is terribly disturbing. I have friends that are prochoice, prolife, it does not matter. Is just unseemly and barbaric and say, how can this be happening in our country in the 21st century . Some calls. Take first is from oregon, democratic line. Dan, you are on with Marsha Blackburn, republican of tennessee. Go ahead. An american citizen and a longtime soldier, i was in from 1971 to 1991, i am tired of the republicans calling us all cowards. That we dont know what we are doing and we are afraid to die for our own country. Peddle all you guys do, fear and i am sick of it. Thank you very much. First of all, thank you for your service. A 20 year military career is commendable and i thank you for that service. I will also have to say, i dont know who is calling you cowards saying you exercise fear because it is not me. I have tremendous respect for our men and women in uniform and tremendous respect for our veterans. I have the norm is better and contingent in my district the enormous veteran contingent in my district. Spends a tremendous amount of time with the post district Fort Campbell and at Fort Campbell, we have the hundred in first, the one 60th and the Fifth Division that are there, so i thank you for your call and more importantly, for your service and your vigilance and for caring. Host on the republican line, california. Caller thank you for taking my call. I wanted to talk a little bit today ort transpired , in israel. Esterday i was really and decided at the time on who i was going to vote after listening to everybody, trump to me came out the strongest and hillary to me came out a politician. She cannot weak, and it really turned me completely away from her. Host any response . Guest i think that the american i i said as yo islier, National Security the top issue. Across the board, women, men, every group, and people realize israel is our primary ally in the middle east. They want to see that strong relationship. I cant fully understand and appreciate that. Is saying, people are listening. I have families telling me theyre watching the debates together, they are listening to these speeches, they are in communication with Public Servants on all sorts of a different level. God is a very good thing. To be listening for where the time is going to be, i did not have the opportunity to hear the speeches. I did go over to meet with some of my constituents who are here for that, and i thought it was impressive that just like the caller, they very thoughtfully listened, took notes, and paid attention to what the candidates were saying and they came before them yesterday. Experienceuest has in the senate and represents the seventh district of tennessee. This is in tennessee, i dont know if it is in the seventh district or not, hello. Ander thank you for cspan i appreciate your program very much. I would like to talk about the health care problem. , theyy i understand it are paying 50 less than we are. They are living longer, they have got a better rate than we have, and i also have a daughterinlaw that has been trying to get an operation for the last three months and you will talk about the weighting program, but she has been waiting for three months to try to get insurance to approve a backup. One more thing, you will talk doctors in canada are not as good as the doctors here. I know a boy that was operated ,n as standard will university and they charged him 2800 to do in the operation on the right leg when it should have been on his left, so there are all kind of different stories to present on television as far as doctors in the hospital, so i would like to explain or you would explain to me one more time, by the United States doesnt have the same programs the rest of the world does . Guest good question. I think the rest of the world would like to have the quality of care that the United States has. Whenave a lot of people you look at the specialties and the access of care. This is where they come. Talk with our friends and neighbors that are there on the northern border of the u. S. And the southern canadian border, and they will tell you there is a good bit of travel. We have several areas of the country that even have the medical tourism, if you will, so people that are coming in and want cap access to our health care system. Let me speak specifically to a couple of the points that he made. Athink that when you look infant mortality and some of those issues that he discussed, the metrics that are used in some other countries and the metrics that are used here are different set. You are going to see a little bit of a difference there. The insurance approval issue and what he is talking about with his daughter, we hear a good bit about problems with the. Nsurance that have cropped up after the obamacare policy came on board. Of course, there were problems before. Everyone agrees that this and agrees it cost too much. And then you have this accelerated cost, the increase in outofpocket cost that are and the additional cost for insurance premiums, and then with the narrow network, with fewer doctors that are available to that network, it takes that product, that Health Care Product that is being sold on the exchanges. It does take longer to get the care that you want. Careu have a centralized with more people into the pool, fewer insurance companies, in fewer positions that are offering the product, then your weight times increase. Times increase. This is what happens in the federal government gets involved, and that is one of the reasons that we have repeatedly, and as obamacare was standing up, i would repeatedly ask then secretary of hhs, if ty could look at that test case for hillary care, which was a disaster in the state of tennessee. It was a democratic governor who came in and took 300,000 people off those roles. He did it because the escalation rate of cost of that program was through the roof. In a fiveyear period of time, that cost for that program had quadrupled in cost, and then it big wasction activated on january 1 of 1995. Tothe time you got 20052006, that program was 35. 3 of the state budget. We cannot afford that. When you look at the cost that these programs have to their states, you say, this is a great example of why you need to insert some free Market Concept and put more choice and options in there. The caller is right to be frustrated, and there are some things that can be done. Marketplace, let people out, let them buy whatever they want at whatever price they can afford, and that is legislation that i have had for seven years. It is part of the republican plan for replacement of obamacare, affordability. It allows you to take the Insurance Products you have received to wherever you want to go. When you look at the cost, 25 30 comes under the liability cost. Cant exercise some liability reforms. Some medical malpractice reforms in place and allows liability for thefor positions tort reforms that are necessary to bring down the cost of health care marketplace. Host we have wandered from chattanooga from tennessee we havew wanda from chattanooga. Caller i was wondering why a person would want to come to the United States if they only knew some of the laws that were here. Like when a person is not given a chance to be on Birth Control to control their family size and say that the persons father is unable to get the job and if they were a felon, it causes their parents to go to jail for not being able to to be able to take care of their children, and when they get there, theyll be charged 50 a day for being in the jail, and that is 50 that the jail is charging, 35 that the system is charging to the parent who cannot pay the 35. As far as people wanting to vote for donald trump and any other republican, i advised them to stay where they are and help that they can get their own country together because this country, along with tennessee, is going to the ruins. Appreciate wanda calling. I will say i dont think our country is going to the ruins and i dont think our state is going to the ruins. I truly believe in america, and i think it is one of those you know, i have got to tell you, wanda, people who say our best days are behind us, i disagree with them. I think our best days are in front of us. Anytime we hit an obstacle in this country, the American People rally, and i think that is what you are seeing with this primary election season. You have new voters that are coming out to vote in this primary that have never voted, and you have had millions of people that come out. Quite frankly, i think it is exciting the people of the country so much that they are showing up to votes, so i dont think we are going to ruins. I think that wanda does bring up arething that many people talking about, prison reform. And that is a very valid point. On the Birth Control issue, there are many people now that are saying, you can just go in and buy it over the counter and not have to get a prescription. That is another worthy discussion, so most of those point she brought forward are points that are worthy of discussion and i thank you for calling. Host representative Marsha Blackburn is our guest. Republican mind next, candy, good morning. Kenny, good morning. Thatr the talking points you are using have been disproven in why do you continue to spew them like they are facts . This socalled big deal of baby parts being harvested has been a l theo be wrong, only people looking at charges of thei people whoe made the video. If you had a. If you had a proven way of arresting someone for the socalled body parts election, you would have barred the done it. Everything that you are doing now are lies and i dont know why you continue to spew them, so maybe you can answer that one . Thank you. Guest sure. I would be happy to answer kennys question. You were talking about the indictment in texas of david videos, and that was for a fraudulent drivers license. As i have talked to so many and peoplekenny, that do undercover investigations, they look at that and they say, that could one a very Chilling Effect those that do undercover investigations, programs like 2020 and 60 minutes investigative journalism, so there is a little bit of question. That is the only thing that there was an indictment on. Ofn you look at the issue the fetal tissue and fetal body , this is something that is illegal in the United States. An on the books as illegal. It was confirmed with passage of 1984. R bill in the last time there was a look inthis, it was in two parts, 1988, the nih revitalization act and in 1993 with legislation that dealt with the nih. The hearings that we did was on on thee research was dole research. It was a congressional hearing that looked at this and as i said earlier, there was a tremendous amount of agreement between the democrat and republican witnesses of what should and should not be allowed. Point a to a case where the law is not broken and that progress has been made . As we we will continue look at the Procurement Organization to look at that. Host but nothing at this point . Just beginning to look. Our first hearing was on bioethics and we will turn our attention to other components that we are required to look at. The medical practices, the to seement businesses, if there has been profit and we will continue with that work. The caseler mentioned out of texas, but what about the videos themselves and the way they were edited . Just that cosan the concern . Does that cause concern . Guest i would encourage people to go online and look at the raw footage. You can see that these are comments that people were making themselves, the individuals that were being interviewed. Naysayers in the videos are saying, do not believe what youre years are hearing and your eyes are saying. Are hearing and your eyes are seeing. We are already beginning to see change take place. In the way some of the practices are carried out. Host North Carolina, independent, jim, hi. Caller good morning. I would like to say that i have a great amount of respect for representative blackburn. I have been calling her for quite some time. I try to take an interest in our in Western North carolina so i like to take an interest in the representatives represent us in the local area. Anyway, let me get to the point. I worked in health care for 30 plus years, almost 35. Uporked with unh, and i said one of the first transport teams for unh and one of the highest mortality first rate or county in North Carolina where we transported the babies out to the Regional Medical center in charlotte at the time, this was back in the late 1980s, and anyway, if you have ever been involved in anything like that, you will notice that it is very well, it is profound, the effect that it has a anyone around. Anyway, if people do look at the films, you will see that there was some very questionable things going on, and if you go and some of the other caller s if you go to other countries, we have a higher abortion rate than almost every country in europe. We let the pregnancies go on longer and do later abortions than almost any country, about five weeks, and iran 15 weeks, on the average, i think, was most of the European Countries around 15 weeks, on average, i think, was most of the European Countries. Host was there a specific question . Caller i am sorry. Im rambling, i am passionate about this. Host caller its all right. Caller let me just put it this way. Host it is all right. Caller let me just put it this week, if the government gets involved in total health care, our government will be providing abortions. What are your thoughts on it that would come to pass in the next decade . What do you think our chances are if Something Like that happening . I know that all of this now storm started when the third play with in to hospitals and the billing and insurance, and i think the Insurance Industry has just been a disaster and obamacare is destroying our country. Host we will let our guest respond. Guest i appreciate that and i appreciate the work he has done with the neon ecology units. Those of us that have had family members that were premature births and that have been in the units or worked with them, he was mentioning the lifeline system. We had angel one and angel to that many of us helped raise money for and purchased for vanderbilt and for them to have that. It is emotional and it is a very difficult time for those families, but absolutely fascinating what the specialist can do to save those premature babies, so thank you for your work. This is one of the questions that i hear from individuals all the time. Because they dont think federal funds, taxpayer dollars, should be used to pay for abortions. With the rollout of obamacare, and theassage there confusion at the last minute in order to get the votes from some of the democrats, the prolife democrat to say no money would be used, they are very concerned about keeping that off. It will require members of congress who are prolife to stand up and say, no, you cannot do this. Maybe, the time has come where funds gooing to say, for Womens Health services, which they are supposed to do, moreo into providing services for women and children at these Community Health centers, and not go to services that also provide abortion. Host representative marsha guest and youur recently wrote an oped taking a look at the life of matthew ray. What was the point you were trying to make and the larger issue itself . Itselfthe larger issue is to talk about the impact that women have in so many different roles however they choose to participate in the Public Sector or private sector. I think that Ronald Reagan said it very well at the funeral , there nancy reagan would not have been a Ronald Reagan, and the role of the spouse to be there as a teammate and to be an encourager. That is an Important Role for the first lady. Nancy reagan vigorously embraced that role. Cheered for america, just as she cheered for her husband, so i thought in light of womens history month, that it was very appropriate to recognize the contribution that she had made to our nation. She one of the things advocated was the use of stem cells, especially with her husbands conditions of with alzheimers. Guest there is a way for us to do adult stem cell research, and as a matter of fact, i thought the Washington Post article on the Zika Virus Research talked about utilization of that research. It is not fetal tissue that they have used in that comment it is in that, it has been other cells that have been able to help them with the zika virus. Host and these are . Guest these are cells that come from the adult stem cells, and cells so utilize these that they can mimic certain conditions. Host in new mexico, democrat line, bill, hello. Caller hello. Carson used embryo stem cells or his research, that included nancy reagan and it has been proven. Thank you. This is one of the things that came out of our hearing that we did on bioethics, and i would encourage you to hold that pull that up. There is no need to do harvesting and pulling from fetal tissue from abortions, miscarriage is from cord blood, things of that nature, that there are plenty of cells in the ,ell line that are available and most of the research now, just as with the zika virus that i was talking about, is coming from the adult stem cell line. Something that there should be plenty of work in. If you look at some of the exciting [indiscernible] coming from the adult stem lines and cord blood, and the amount of research that is being done there, you do not need to go about harvesting the body parts. There is plenty of other material that is available. Host georgia, republican line. Here is john. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I would like to ask is thentative blackburn congressional hearing going to get to the bottom of benghazi . Lso, the emails it just amazes me that David Petraeus was fined and they wanted to reduce them in bank, in rank, and this lady running for the presidency this administration is so twofaced. Based on while everything. I want answers about the emails because if they are going to generalwar hero like David Petraeus as a traitor, and my book, a traitor, and you have Hillary Clinton for the lie, dency she did not she did not lie i feel the American Public needs an answer. I am so sick of the democrats talking about Social Security while the republicans are up there working on Social Security. I have never heard one democrat say that that is more important. Thank you. That a couple of things are there. He brought up a point about general petraeus, and we had general petraeus in command at Fort Campbell during my district, two different times during his service, and he is highly regarded and respected and well remembered. We have chairman goudy, who is leading the benghazi committee. They are continuing their work. I think that you will see them move forward at some point soon with their findings. The emails, the investigation is continuing there. I know that the eye is doing their part i know the fbi is doing their part in looking at the investigation, and they have an extensive team that is sir, i think, and you can expect to hear something from the fbi. Social security, we do here a tremendous amount of concern. This is the year that the ssdi fund runs out of the Disability Fund runs out of money. It goes over into the general fund. I hear this from seniors all the , yes, indeed, we need to stabilize those trust funds, and i have had legislation for several years that we continue to work on them move forward because it is the right thing to do that would force that money to be held that is coming out of your paycheck and into the fund. And then for congress to vote what it will be used for because right now, it is just a stack of ious in a filing cabinet sitting out in the Federal Building in west virginia, and those ious. Re coming to i would encourage all of your theers, go to the trustee, report for the trustee is the medicare and Social Security, and read that warning that they put into their trustees report. They are saying tons of things to do something about this. The callers rights. Eight is running out of money, and the drawdown that is there, and the fact that the funds have been just moved over and that they are being stacked, we do need to wall it off. We need to pass my bill and put those funds where they need to be, in a trust fund and treated like a trust fund. Host delaware, independent line. Frank, good morning. Caller i want to know what all the people running for president have not served in the military and how come we dont have a draft anymore because half the country does not even serve anymore . Thank you. Guest i thought it was very interesting when you get the fact that there is not anybody on the stage for president that has military service, and i think, frank, this is the first time that has occurred. That is a good question. Remembert how people the military services. After the first caller, i thanked him for that 20 year career he had from 1971 to 1991 in the military, when you have to fight for that freedom and defend that flag and defend our nations sovereignty and you are on the front lines, and i see it every time i am out with the troops from Fort Campbell, when they are deployed in different places and you get to meet with them when they are in those Forward Operating bases, it changes my perspective, and meeting with those military families that have a loved one that is deployed, those are individuals that truly love to defend this nation, and they are ready to go out and fight. I am just grateful that god puts that in their heart to want to go pick up that bites, and i do hope that we see more of them continuing other forms of public service. I think for many people, it is troubling to them that the have not had to fight for that freedom that maybe they dont or maybe they take for granted that because they have freedom and can exercise that freedom of freedom ofthat assembly and that freedom of religion that we are always going to have that. Are republican candidates also concerned, what do you think of the ability to take care of instances . Foreign and domestic instances foreign and domestic . Thet any of those three on stage will get that better than Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, and whomever is on the stage, they will have my full support. This is an outsider year, and it has been an outside year from the getgo. I said months ago that i that the nominee would be tromp for up or cruz. I still believe you will see cruz. Or we need to make sure that they win the general and that they are one of the most competent, and capable active president s that we have had. I want to make certain that they stand firmly on the constitution family freedom, hope, opportunity for future generations. Host have you fully supported the candidate . Not. no, i have i have not supported any candidate. I have been a to support each and every one of them. I do think trump or cruz will be the nominee or the next president. Host what is the game client as far as other hearings . Guest we are continuing to work. We want to do different work at the Procurement Organizations profit cannot organizations. Saleannot profit from the of human body parts, so we went to take a look at the Business Practices around these Procurement Organizations and intend to do so. Host and you will continue to subpoena to get information you need to . Guest we will continue to move forward with subpoenas that are necessary. We are determined to complete our work and to deliver a report and find out what is going on in you in the streets, if will, as it has become an to get to the bottom. Hen to know when you are done . Guest we will have to report that is done at the end of this congress or calendar year. Host Marsha Blackburn is the and of the Panel Representative of tennessee. Thank you for your time. We will be joined by Gerald Connolly, democrat from virginia, and he cochairs the new Democrat Coalition. Also, what is happening in brussels and since that occurred overnight, as well as the president s trip to cuba. All that as the washington journal continues. The director of the internet there is of toledo in ohio, many have come to my office talking about who they want to vote for, regardless of democratic or republican, it is your civic duty to get out and vote. Any things are at stake with this election, so i courage you to do your research and vote for the candidate that best supports your causes and the future of this nation. [indiscernible] were in the city of toledo talking to ohio primary voters. Him a lot of progress ideas that are important to the country and i would encourage everyone to go out and support fobernie, if possible. It will be important to watch College Tuition, as well as going to schools and how people afford it,r it and as well as leaving college and what the future will look like, the job market, and to was trying to bring jobs back to the u. S. And things like that, so i things that is one of the big issues during the election cycle. Up voting for hillary because she seems more knowledgeable and she has been in the political environment seeing and she has been the innerworkings of the white house and or everything goes. It on thetune into weekends, usually, it is authors sharing releases. Watching nonfiction authors on booktv is the best television for serious readers. They can delve into conversations. They bring the author after author after author to spotlight the work of fascinating people. Oktv and i am cspan fan. I am a history buff and i enjoy seeing the fabric of our country and how they work and how they are made. I love American Historytv. It is a fantastic show. I had no idea [indiscernible] with American History tv, it gives you that perspective. I am cspan fan. Washington journal continues. Host joining us now is congressman Gerald Connolly, democrat from virginia and he cochairs the new Democrat Coalition. We will be talking about the president trip to cuba and other matters. Good morning. Before we get to legislative anues, i wanted to give update about this mornings apparent terror attacks in brussels. The latesto ap, death toll stands at 26 with at least 136 injured. In brussels isy recommending that americans in belgium stay where they are and avoid public transportation. More than 200 flights to brussels have been diverted or canceled after these three explosions which brought the airport and a subway station in belgiums capital. Congressman, give us your initial reaction to these attacks. You are a member of the Foreign Affairs committee. Guest it struck me personally because i was just in brussels last month for a natorelated meeting. Security was pretty tight and pretty visible when i was there. Attacksion to the paris and the fact that one cell was known to be operating out of brussels, so this is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to ,he victims and to the belgians but it does remind us all about how important vigilance is and that we have got to take this fight to the terrorists. Host to have concerns on the homeland of the subway system in d. C. Or other stations or the airport here . Guest i dont have any specific concerns about any imminent threats here in washington or in the United States. That said, again, brussels reminds us that we have to be vigilant. We cannot let up Emergency Preparedness and the time to track down terrorists perpetrators, and we will have to sustain that. Host these attacks come on the heels of fridays arrest of terror suspect so obvious along bdeselam. A is there a concern that even after the arrest of heads that were spotted from terrorist attacks that we still see them continuing and that the cells continue to operate . Guest absolutely. We dont know yet the details in todays terror attack may very well be related to the capture bdeslam, we do not know. Host we are talking to congressman Gerald Connolly, a democrat from virginia. I wanted to turn now to the president s trip to cuba. Last year, you are one of 26 democrats who voted against the travel restrictions to cuba. Can you tell us why . You oughtont think to give something away for nothing. I am not unsympathetic with what president obama is trying to do. Having said that, for 50 years, the castro brothers welcomed the u. S. Embargo, welcomed the lack of normalization with relationship because it has strengthened them at home and their hands and made them her road figures to parts of the third world. And made them heroine figures to parts of the third world. , if wet of that shift are going to normalize relationships and liberalize trade and investment and economic relations, we should get something for it. What we should get his progress on human rights, progress on the ability to defend, progress on political discourse, progress on past and religious freedoms. Weprogress as democrats and care about, we did, so how about exacting a little leverage while we have it . Leverage we have not had tear before with respect to cuba. I would say that is a critique that has been shared by the Washington PostEditorial Board, and their sentiments very much reflect my own. Host we are talking to congressman Gerald Connolly. We want to get your calls into this discussion. Democrats can call in at 202 7488000. Republicans at 202 7488001. And independents, 202 7488002. Are sayingf you that you wanted to have some leverage in this discussion. Guest no, i am saying that we do have leverage. Why dont we use it . Host what would you like to see . Guest lets loosen up pressure restrictions on the island, lets allow political defense and opposition to occur, to organize, to protest without fear of retribution. Oft the other day on the eve the president s arrival, a group of women coming out of the protestearing white to the regime, or manhandled and in some cases or manhandled and in some cases arrested for protesting peacefully. I am concerned that we have the ability right now to try to influence that, and my view is lets do something, lets use that pressure, that leverage because the situation has changed. The castro brothers actually now they havehich is why accepted president obamas [indiscernible] host would you like to see an end to the castro regime . Guest of course. It has been oppressive, and it has inhibited the ability of cubans to reach their full potential, economically, and if, politically they ever had the time, it was long ago, and it is time cuba entered the 21st century. I, like lots of others, look forward to radical reorientation of cuba that is a liberal democracy, i hope, over time. Host we are talking with congressman Gerald Connolly, a democrat from virginia, the cochair of the new Democrat Coalition and a member of the Foreign Affairs committee. We went to bring our callers into this discussion. On the democratic line, the upper from florida. Deborah from florida. Caller one thing that the congressman is saying about cuba on president obama, and i am glad that he went and has taken initiative to open up and work with cuba. My other thing is i wanted to ask you, Bernie Sanders, he is saying that he can get individuals free college and Free Health Care. How do you feel about that . How long do you think that would take him to get the free college and Free Health Care . Do you think the congress will back him on that . Host we will give the congressman attends to respond. Guest those are good questions and thank you for them. I like Bernie Sanders. I have worked with them on some legislative issues and admire. Is work often behind the scenes and in the congress, however, promising andition would be promising universal medicare, again, a laudable goal, that is to say everyone having access to health care is a right and a privilege, i just think that laudable, unattainable. The costs would be prohibited, the tax increases required would be not sustainable, and and listening to him sometimes, i wonder if you works in the same congress that i work in, but there was no appetite for that kind of radical or he refers to it as revolutionary change. I dont think they are attainable the way he has presented them. It is great to promise something free, but the details are just as important. So hard to expand health care access, to reform illegals, to make it for example, to deny coverage based on a preexisting condition, i am not ready to turn my back on the of audible care act and the progress were aking in the hope that maybe Different Program might be better. That may be true in the abstract, but we live in a practical world and reform is often incremental and not revolutionary in our country. I just think that is a promise that cannot be achieved. Host do you have a candidate that you back . Guest i have backed and supported Hillary Clinton. Host getting back to cuba, do you think that the Detention Center at Guantanamo Bay should be closed . Guest i do. That has been a consistent position of mine in the eight years i have been in congress. I think the fight in iraq and afghanistan has been problematic for the United States. That we areidea afraid of allowing our system of justice and incarceration here at home, and we need to go somewhere else way out of sight, out of mind. I visited guantanamo twice, and has beenreat care taken to make sure certain procedures are in place to reflect american sense of just dont i think the purpose of guantanamo, if there was one originally in the early stages of the war in afghanistan and iraq, i think has been fulfilled and i think we are much better off closing the facility. Host do you think the detainees there can and should be housed in the United States . Know, we have been trying to relocate them or dashboard i will point out that we have shown an ability to try and incarcerate terrorists right here at home, and there is nothing to fear. When the american system of justice is on display in those cases, i think america gets stronger and looks rather to the rest of the world. Host we are talking to congressman Gerald Connolly, democrat from virginia. On the republican line, patrick from leesburg, virginia. Caller watching the discussion yesterday in cuba, i felt like we were given validity for that oppressive dictatorship, and the congressman mentioned a few minutes ago about having more open trade and allowing visitors, wouldnt that have been a better negotiating part before we went over there to that regime . Guest yes, i think we should use and have used the leverage we have possessed, which is new. Affect reforms and trade on behalf of the cuban people, and i believe the president will do that then has , butn a different path respectfully, i would have chosen a different path. Host lets change topics little bit to the president ial race. Yesterday, donald trump again unveiling some of his foreignpolicy views. Lets take a look at some of the things he said during yesterdays editorial meeting at the Washington Post. [video clip] donald trump we have many people, many republicans are coming. That is why we will beat Hillary Clinton. We have democrats coming in, what do we have . 20 of the democrats for the last primary, but we have independents coming in vast numbers, and the most amazing thing, we have many, many, many people you would not think that there were this many people that have never voted before. See it every 50th person says, i have never voted. I am talking about 30yearold men, 40yearold women, my oldest is 93 years old from tennessee and has never voted before. This incredible woman and a contributor, a couple of you, and she is so excited and she will be voting. 93 years old from tennessee. I just tell you, this is something amazing happening. The other thing is, michigan is if you look at it, ohio is the state we have to win, right . You have to and florida, virginia, pennsylvania, but they dont talk about michigan but i think we have a good shot at new york. Remember new york values . You think ted cruz is going to win new york . I dont think so. That was donald trump speaking during a press conference at his property at the Old Post Office in washington, d. C. Talking about democrats and republicans coming onto his campaign. What is your reaction to that . There is no doubt that he enthusiasma certain with the republican base. It is not clear that he is met breaking and huge numbers of people that are new or who did not vote in november. I believe Hillary Clinton has gone more votes cumulatively then he has in the primary season, but he talks about new york. Every poll, including recent ones, have shown that he would lose new york in the general election by a large margin. I think it is almost delusional that he might think he could ,arry a state like denver colorado. Is either things that he is going to repeat his exceeding expectations in the general election, but a lot of the critics and skeptics were proved wrong again, or he will represent and will lead the Republican Party to catastrophic loss in november. Theres a lot of circumstantial theence that suggests latter. In exit polling just a week ago or two ago in mini super tuesday, almost 30 of republican primary voters said they would not support him in november. You are not only not winning new york, you are looking at really an epic loss of landslide proportions. And that ought to be concerned on the other side of the aisle and i think it is. I think that is why there is a movement to try to stop tru mp at almost any cost within the conservative franks. They see a looming threat. Host you are a member of the Foreign Affairs committee. Mr. Trump began unveiling his Foreign Affairs agenda this week. Critique of nato. What is your reaction to it . Guest based on when i read, i was deeply concerned. Believe what is going on with ukraine, imea, the aggressive moves in the baltic states, we need to strengthen nato if theyre going to determine further russian aggression. This is no time to talk about weakening nato or dismembering it. Unbelievableis an signal to send to our allies. You also talk about the need to maybe pull back because we were over extended again. Our allies in asia are looking for us to strengthen our role given more aggressive moves by the chinese and the south china sea, their occupation of certain islands, and building up their bases. Air these are aggressive moves by china. About are very concerned and they need a strong United States presence. All, are the pacific represent they fact that donald trump is the first candidate in a long time to be emerging as the leading andidate of the two parties littleeignpolicy is a on the allies or for that matter, close. We are talking to Gerald Connolly, democrat from virginia. He is part of the Foreign Affairs committee and vice chair of the new Democrat Coalition. We went to get to our next caller. Howard from miami, florida. First, and i go backandforth, but i think castro made an overture to the United States to try and normalize relations, and that overture arrived the day after kennedy was assassinated so it did not happen. Everyone knows the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We have had 50 years of the embargo and i believe what obama has done has to be done. You have to treat the environment internally that will empower the people and it does not happen overnight. They will put more and more pressure on the government. They are history. Host lets give the congressman a chance to respond. Guest point well taken. My critique was we have some leverage. Democrats late claim to a passion for human rights advocacy. We are not alone. Friends on the right also share some of that passion. Worship as you will. A passion for free speech. None of that is going on on the cuban island. We are in a position to use leverage while it is still in power to affect change, not in an evolutionary way. That is what i think we should have done and i hope we will still do. Host up next week have willie from louisiana. You are on with congressman Gerald Connolly. Maner i am a 75yearold and a 20yearold veteran. When back in 1968. I want to tell you something about this trump thing. It was kept under service during the vietnam war. You talk about taking the country back. I see the congressional thing on cspan every day. Minorities and who are they talking about taking the country back from . That expression of lets take the country back. From whom . An offensive remark to me and you. Were all americans. We are all in this together. We have different values, different experiences. That is to be expected. Not demonized or despised. That is the breakdown that has occurred. It is not just politicians, as you are alluding to. We have seen it emerged in this Political Campaign among some supporters and some protesters. We need to respect each other even if we do not agree. We need political figures who reinforce that principle, not exploit it. That is the authoritarian streak that concerns me greatly. Americanst century, an political figure would say any platform, i would like to punch that guy in the nose. In the old days, he would be taken out on a stretcher. Maybe i will pay the Legal Expenses of one of my supporters who sucker punched a protester as he was being escorted out of the crowd. Those are disturbing words. We should not say anything but that is wrong about that candidate. Leadership political like Speaker Paul Ryan have called that out. Thuggishnce or behavior by a leading candidate for president disqualifies that person from the office. Host were talking to congressman Gerald Connolly of virginia. Up next we have tom from california. Caller i would like to respond. 2013 wasd pork in bought out by a chinese corporation. The Largest Oil Producer in axas is being bought out by Saudi Arabian corporation. I do not understand how you can sit there anad not be honest with the American People. WithMillion People hepatitis c. Our companies should not be bought out by foreign adversaries. I am supporting donald trump. How do you respond . Guest you have covered a lot of ground there. I will simply point out that drug prices are too high. That is why it is important to bring down the cost of drugs and health care for millions of americans. A virus that can lead to more serious conditions and needs to be treated wiwth Affordable Drugs with Affordable Drugs. We had a hearing where an only decided to raise the price of a drug to prohibitive levels. It was the only joined for a particular condition and he took advantage of that legacy once he bought out that company. Negativelot of publicist and has been indicted for an unrelated matter. In some ways, the poster child in the industry are willing to go for the sake of profit, even at the expense of. Eoples health you have chosen to support donald trump. I do know that donald trump has a plan to reduce the cost of drugs or to try to regulate the ability of Drug Companies when they get into the realm of exorbitant prices for drugs that are unique. Host you are a cochair of the new Democrat Coalition, which released a report last week. Guest new Democrat Coalition is democrats who are progressive and are looking at a different kindo of economic message for our party. It is maybe more sympathetic to the business community. The import export ban. We are looking at Innovative Solutions and job generating opportunities. We are looking at the need for investing in infrastructure and the possibility of maybe marrying tax reform to investment. Of capital in overseas banks who are afraid to bring it home because of tax implications. A possibility of negotiating something so that it is winwin. We can make it work for the United States, and providing som e tax relief. Can we make sure we are more competitive by investing in research and development, in making sure we preserve our innovative edge. We have to make those three investments. Report talking about the report that was released, it says it outlines 200 bill and other draft products that the new democrats are using, expanding opportunity and making government work. Time wasa, this announced last year. Bigticket items such as rewriting the tax code to smaller proposals in a wide array of policy areas. We have the president ial elections and the Campaign Rhetoric and it seems to be a lot of partisan divide. Is it more difficult for these ideas to push forward more of a centrist economic agenda . Guest sometimes but sometimes not. We were able to come together on trade authority. We were able to come together on the reauthorization of the import export bank, which was very much resisted by rightwing elements of congress. We petitioned to get it out of the committee and onto the floor. Over 300 votes for it. We think there is a lot of support for what we are trying to do. And here is the point. In terms of the future of the democratic party, our message is worthy American People are. You want to take advantage of our strength and innovation and technology, that is what were promoting. If the democrats are going to win, it is going to be in the suburbs. They are open to this economic message. That is where they live. We believe the democrats have to broaden their appeal and not abandon anything. Make sure it is inclusive for the suburban voters who are looking desperately for Political Leadership that speaks to them and their economic situation. Host we are talking with congressmen Gerald Connolly of virginia of the new Democrat Coalition. Our next caller is on our independent line, mike from lexington, massachusetts. Good morning. Caller good morning, congressman. Going back to something you said earlier. Passion for getting the criminals and fugitives who fled to cuba, getting them back and process in our criminal Justice System . Guest did you say from cuba . Caller the ones that fled to cuba. Fugitives, etc. Guest well, in the process of normalization, they are going to have to be ironed out lots of bilateral agreements, including agreements with respect to criminal code and reciprocity. I do not believe cuba should have been a haven for those who flee justice from the United States. For protecting those who have committed crimes recognized by the international community. Clearly that is an issue that has to be part of the dialogue. Host on the democratic line we have joey from oklahoma city. Caller thank you for taking my call. Can you hear me ok . Great. I think a lot of people are missing or ignoring on purpose what Bernie Sanders message is. His message is to bring into the white house and this time we go into the white house with him. Some of his stuff cannot be done because of congress. If the American People go into the white house with the president , a president not taking money through the Podesta Group and their super pacs. You cannot get Social Security done. Hillary and her biggest problem is trustworthiness and her grouptions to the podesta and the dark money. If we want to take our country back from the rich people that are controlling it, we pick Bernie Sanders. The National Polls and the world berniere all voting for because they do not have a biased media distorting his record. Guest thank you for that free ad for Bernie Sanders. I admire his pluck. I am glad he is presenting his perspective. End of the day, i think that it is not a coparent or achievable economic message. Bernie is appealing to the politics of economic agreements. Donald trump is doing the same on the right. Are to blame for a lot of our ills. Corporate america has taken advantage of us. Wall street needs to be rained in. Eined ix . But what is the f i what about Everything Else we have to worry about . I feel bernie has a narrow message with a lot of residence. It is not without validity. We need competent hands to handle a plethora of issues, including Foreign Policy, which bernie almost never addresses. He doesnt have a deep background in that regard. We do not live in that kind of world. Is not a choice, something we have to do. Whether we want to be engaged or not, the world doesnt wait for us to figure that out. Respectfully i believe Hillary Clinton is one of the most competent people to run for the presidency in my lifetime. I think she will bring a great deal of strength and expertise to the oval office, especially in the kind of political situation we see on the other side of the aisle. Host you serve on the oversight committee. Today there will be a hearing on the heroine and opioid abuse academic. What do you think the governments response should be . Guest we have to look at the root causes of this. We have seen an explosion in opioid prescriptions. Medical oath says to do no harm. Deal with people pain, and that is a good thing. We have gone far beyond that. Millionr over 260 opioid prescriptions were written in this country. The worldpercent of population and account for 80 of the opioid prescriptions. What has happened, we have had an epidemic of opioidrelated deaths, an explosion in heroin addiction. Is all tooor drug often opioid prescription drugs. And so we have to address this in a dialogue with the medical community in setting standards for when and how opioids are prescribed, monitoring how they are used, educating the public. This is the first in what i hope will be a series of hearings highlighting this problem. I talk to colleagues from rural and urban and suburban parts of america, and this is a common refrain. This is an issue we have to address. Host time for one last call on the republican line, max from illinois. Good morning. Caller good morning. I do not understand why hillary should be a candidate, after what you of done, put everything on the private server. President obama, i am so disappointed in him. He will not put boots on the ground. I am going for trump. Host does give the congressman a chance to respond. Are you concern the email issue will be difficult for secretary clinton . Guest so far that involves what Hillary Clinton has said. That is it. There is no evidence she knowingly compromised classified material. Tens of thousands of these emails have been released or about the released by the courts. There is no evidence she willingly compromised anything, hid anything, lied about anything. She chose to use a server she thought was encrypted and protected at home, where she lives with the former president of the United States. Should she have done that . Probably not. Issue the only one to do that . No. Condoleezza rice and colonel powell did Something Like that. It is a favorite on right wing blogs and talk shows to attempt to make this issue bigger then it is. So far there is no evidence it is nothing other than background noise. Hardly something that disqualifies Hillary Clinton from being president of the United States and somehow ove rtakes her tenure of secretary of state. Host congressman Gerald Connolly, democrat from virginia, thank you so much for joining us today. Coming up after the break, back to the latest terror attacks from brussels. We will take your calls. , as the director here in Ohio Veterans talked about who to vote for, regardless if they want to vote republican or democratic, it is your civic duty to vote. I encourage you to vote for the candidate who best supports your causes. [indiscernible] i am supporting Bernie Sanders. He is the most viable alternative. He has the most progressive ideas for the country. I would encourage everyone to support bernie if possible. Isthe most important issues going to be College Tuition as well as jobs. When college kids go to school, they need to know how to afford it. And what the job market is going to look like. Who is trying to bring jobs back to the u. S. I think those of the biggest issues. I am not that lyrically inclined. I voted for hillary. She seemed more knowledgeable and has been in the political environment before. She has been secretary of state and is seen the inner workings of the white house. Washington journal continues. Host we were discussing the terror attacks in brussels. We want to give you the latest. The death toll is increasing. Right now officials are saying at least one and possibly two rifles have been found at the Brussels Airport, which is one of two sites that was attacked in brussels today. London police are appealing for video footage is from those who have witnessed the attack. Two deadly explosions in belgian at the airport as well as eddie subway station. We are joined by gabrielle, a reporter from the wall street journal. Can you hear me . Guest i can, yes. Host thank you for joining us today. Can you give us the latest, starting with the death toll and what you are seeing on the ground . Guest i do not have a full confirmed death toll. Dozens of people have died and many are severely injured. It is hard to nail down how me people have died. At least seven curses arrived at the hearses arrive at the airport. Security forces have conducted a third controlled explosion of the third package, suspicious package. At therning around 8 00 departure hall of the airport. Host at least 26 people have been killed, reported by abc, 170 injured. Tell us when you are right now. Guest i am standing about 100, airport infrom the the evacuation zone. Most people have been taken out of the airport. I can see the arrival hall. It has a glass front which is completely shattered. A lot of Police Forces around. A few hours ago hundreds of people inside the airport were let out and transported away in buses. When i arrived here this morning after the explosions were first reported, it was chaotic. People were pulling their suitcases and in total shock. I saw a young man who was bleeding from the head who had been hit by shattered glass on his way to portugal. His teacher and another classmate were injured. I spoke to people close to the last reported horrific injuries blast. Se to the host we are speaking to a reporter from the wall street journal. Give us aays attack, sense of what the anxiety level was in terms of the possibility of a terror attack. Guest something that we were all worried about. Already security was boosted more than a year ago after the attack in paris. And then another expansion of security on the street after the attacks in november. We have had a lot of military and soldiers on the streets. And then there was the fourday thekdown and the captured remaining suspected attacker in paris. He was captured in brussels and authorities were warning he had planned another attack, and security had been increased throughout the city. So far nothing has happened here. It is something we were worried as we were expecting. Another thing has happened right here in the heart of europe. Host as of now, all flights have been canceled out of the airport as well as other mass transit stops. What is the sense there . Is there any sense of the impact . How people will be able to get around . Do you have a sense of that . Guest i am out here at the airport. I see the reports from my colleagues. As you reported, there was another explosion in a metro station after the blast at the airport where people were badly injured. Public Transit System has been shut down. The Prime Minister has urged everybody to stay where they are. People are staying at home, many in their offices. I think it will be a long time before things seen normal. Host ok. Gabrielle, a reporter on the ground in brussels, thank you so much for joining us. Guest thank you. Bye. We are getting some reaction some of our president ial candidates here in the United States. Donald trump tweeted host and john kasich issued a statement the attacks against the very way of life, and against the Democratic Values of our political systems, it has been built. We are taking your calls in reaction to the terror attacks in brussels. Up first on the independent line we have mark from the bronx. You are on. Thank you. Good morning. Thank you for cspan. I was watching this morning. Ibc er people were on on abc. Richard clarke said the only way to prevent this is intelligence. He was the head of counterintelligence and counterterrorism at the cia and after 9 11. Intelligence it is you cant search backpacks to bring an end to this. He said here in america, the Muslim Community is very close, working with the local police department. In brussels and europe and belgium. I dont terribly know whose fault it is. But they are completely apart from the rest of the community. And the fact that the last terrorist who was caught was on the lam for four months, that would never happen in america. Four months to be on the lam. And you cant carpet from this problem out of the way. Vote in back to the stone age or kill them all. You cant do that. Host that was mark on the independent line. Dawned fromave claremont, california calling in on the public line. Good morning. Caller sympathy to all of those tragic deaths that have occurred there. At some point, people are going to ask the democrats and obama, what is he doing to stop this . Doesnt he take some ownership . He fact that he will stand up and call it a terrorist, it is a fundamental problem. We need a leader who calls a spade a spade. Just terrible. At least you knowledge the death of that marine and afghanistan. He has a whole plan of restricting military doing things and it is topsecret control. I know of any marine or private who did what he did or what Hillary Clinton did, they would be in jail. This is a terrible situation. It all starts at the top. To see jerry conley run a middle of the Road Campaign is ridiculous. Host according to cnn, the latest death toll in the paris in the russells attack is up to 34. With over 170 injured. Being reported by the spanish government, saying the attacks show the most brutal and inhumane side of those who know only the language of violence and terror. Linked foreign minister the attacks to the Islamic State armed groups. Calls andking your getting your reactions to todays attacks in brussels at the airport and in a subway station. Up next on the democratic line, we have john from utah. Good morning. Caller good morning. Thank you for the conversation. I am stunned by the American People, how they are so brainwashed into the wrong facts about what is going on. We didnt have this 15 years ago. The reason these people are bad is because we invaded a land that had not been invaded for 14 years. We killed 200,000300,000 of their people and we dont think they are bad . It is not about freedoms. It is not because of our way of life. It is because we they take them. This all started with al qaeda cause we went into iraq. Everybody wants more work and more everything. This is what Bernie Sanders is right about. We need to stop invading muslim countries and creating generations of people who hate us because we have killed entire families and generations of people. And they think we can go back over there and kill more of them and it is ok . What is wrong with people. Endless war and 890 billion a year where we cant Fund Education for 70 billion . Ridiculous. This is the problem with the democrats and the republicans. They dont write bills, lobbyists to. It needs to stop. Host 7 that5 was john on the democratic line. We are taking your calls and getting your concerns and reactions after the terrorist attack in brussels at the airport and also at a subway station. It has claimed dozens of lives with more than 100 injured. Democrats can call in on the democratic line. On thecans call in republican line. Up next on the democratic line, we have david from detroit. David, good morning. Caller thank you. I am a veteran. I served for six years. I served for four years as active. To that goes out willinglyat i will raise my hand to and serve. I served with distinction and i was honorably discharged. What bothers me, ok. It is the fact that we have these people out here. And im going to say it. They are triggerhappy. They want to jump in there. They want everything with war. Everyt go into likeement and area brussels and wipe out all of the have a bit that if we get donald trump and someone like that, it will further escalate rings. We will be at war and we will never be able to end it. Host what do you like to see with the reform policy action from the United States . After this attack . Caller i am glad you asked me that. When september 11 happened, i gathered the data. Lets figure out who is responsible. Lets not go in hammering at everything. Lets just go in and get will be need to get and then do it correctly. Dont just go in there and start indiscriminately dropping war bonds and things of that nature. We have the intelligence and we have the time. We have all of the tools to figure out what we need to do to take place. Host thank you for calling. Camerone minister david said, we must stand with belgium at this very difficult time. World leaders are reacting to this mornings attack. That was at the Brussels Airport and at a subway station in the city. We are taking your reaction. Havehe republican line, we david. From pennsylvania. I am responding a little bit to the man who called from utah. Saying that these attacks and the hatred is basically because of our attacking and invading iraq. He tweeted. Amazingknow, it it is to me that he forgot about september 11. The 9 11 attacks which happened before that. And then it made sense to me because he said he was a Bernie Sanders supporter. Target and that shows is thater really tuesday vigilant and we need to protect ourselves. It isnt necessarily to protect our people. Thank you for cspan. I appreciate it. Ext, we have as run. What is your reaction to the terror attacks in brussels . Caller thank you for having me. Everyone is very involved with what we should do and what we havent been doing. Take a minute and call your parents. Call your kids if you have them. It is scary. And it is awful. And it is hard to handle. But in the end, you think you have to remember to let those around you that you love them. I want to remind everyone today to call those that you love. Up next, we have packed from sacramento california. Good morning. Caller i was calling about brussels. Iear and the panic wanted to say my prayers are with them. Also, i am wondering about the vetting process of the people who were able to get into it. Lly, i was originally about those things. I am originally from sacramento. I am a first time home buyer. Moved in. We have Illegal Immigrants here who are gang members and it is not safe for us to go out. With more people coming in to the United States, i am wondering what is going to help with the vetting process. So that what happened in brussels does not happen here in the United States. Pat callingas in. The brussels mayor says at least 20 people died in the subway attack near the eu headquarters. That was one of two sites where there were attacks. They are reporting that at the subway, at least 20 fatalities at that site alone. The ap is reporting that european Officials Say at least one and possibly two rifles were found in the lounge at the Brussels Airport. We are talking about the terrorist attacks in brussels this morning. We are taking your calls and getting your reactions. Up next, we have charles. He is calling on the republican line from arkansas. Caller thank you for cspan. It is nice to be able to give the people a voice. It really upsets me to see what is going on in this country. Criminals can run for office, like Hillary Clinton. Bernie sanders has never done nothing in his life. Except be a senator. He will run this country into the ground. They are bringing these people over here not vetted. And they are going to take us out. Host charles, who is your candidate . How do you think they will handle terror . For donaldll, i am trump. I recently switched from democrat to republican because i started watching the senate in believend i cannot these democrats in the senate. Harry reid and all of them. I just dont understand how they think. And iow, i switched over like what donald trump has to say. Host next on the line we have on the independent line, sherry, calling from chicago. What is your reaction to the terror attacks . Caller well, i agree with the individual who called from utah 45 callers ago. Ourve the u. S. Is interventionism and our regime change, it is creating so much anger. And you report you so. Reap what you sow. And wedont stop this get out of these wars, we can look forward to more of this. We have already spent half of the money that we take in from taxes on the military. And more. It could be spent here, building bridges and repairing roads. Repairing water pipes and sending people to college. This is ridiculous. I dont know how we got here. Host are you satisfied with the level of security here in the United States . Or are you afraid that caller im not afraid in the least. I have a higher probability of being killed by gunfire where i live there and i do of being taken out by a terrorist. I do not go to sleep at night worrying about the terrorists. I worry about our friends in the world as the United States. Honestly. I used to support Hillary Clinton when i started to look into what was going on with all of the constant war. And i realized the secretary of state, she got us into gaddafi, and that created a vacuum. Isis has created a whole village. And she is advocating to take out a solid in syria. Need to bad man but we use diplomacy and we need to get out of the wars. This isnt benefiting anybody. Host that was sherry calling in from chicago. I wanted to give an update for the latest from the associated press. They just tweeted that the death toll is at least 31 at this point. In this bombs that struck the Brussels Airport and the subway station in that city at least 31 people have died. Im sure those numbers will continue to change throughout the morning as this just happened a few hours ago. We are talking about the terror attacks in brussels. With our viewers. On our democratic line, we have james from tennessee. Good morning. Caller i would just like to make a comment. I am a disabled veteran, i served in vietnam and berlin, germany. And i love america. But i predicted myself that this would bring a divide with america and amongst the people of america. The different races and climates. It is truly sad, the rhetoric and the hatred that stains from this great country. And for the people who are not informed, please, get informed before you speak out. Because the rhetoric and the hatred that you are spreading is going to cause more of the same activity. Please, take heed of the hatred. Host up next, we have routes on the republican line. Calling from alabama. Good morning. Caller good morning. I think what we ought to do is that when we get any immigrants from anywhere, especially from the muslim countries around instead of letting them congregate in one place, we should send them to different places. That we shouldnt do like president obama is doing. We should let the people know that we wille here keep an eye on them. If you have a dictator, killing people, would you want to do instead of working with people, i think you ought to send a missile fright into their capital while they are there to kill the leader and itll scare everyone of the rest of the people in the country and they that one man is forcing the country to be crazy. Host we are keeping an eye on the latest news out of brussels. Brussels is indicating that 20 people died and 106 people were injured in the attack on the subway station this morning, that came 90 minutes after the attack on the air or to. Alone, 20way station people have died and 106 people are injured. 11 people were killed and 81 people were injured in explosions in the Brussels Airport. We are taking fewer calls about this attack and getting reaction from it. On the independent line, we have brian from michigan. Good morning. We lost brian. We go to the democratic line, ozone park, new york. What is your reaction . Caller yes. It is so sad. You know, all of the killings happening in the world, it is very sad. Just like it is happening now in brussels, all of the innocent people are killed. Alsoerica and russia and otherer syria aberrant countries, they are killing millions of people. But i think the solution is to caused all of these problems. And solve it. I think that is the solution. And what donald trump said scares me because he is saying a lot of scary stuff like the families of the people, the terrorists, when most of the families did not even know what their kids are doing. Just like all of the parents, doesnt know if their kids are involved with drugs or anything. So i dont think that is fair to do. And i am scared at what he is saying is going to create problems here in america between americans. Because he is dividing americans. He is attacking everyone and turning everyone on each other. That scares me. Because im afraid of what is going on over there. People killing each other and hating each other. People will attack each other and that scares me. Host ok. Of next on the republican line, we have carl from michigan. N to theyour reactio terrorist attacks in brussels this morning . Caller good morning. Thank you for all of your efforts. That was a great call from sherry, she was responding to utah in regards to these things happening. This is continuing interventionist policies. Those two exchanges between the callers, we invaded iraq. And then another caller what about 9 11 . Did you forget . Yes, they were saudis and not iraqis. We are the biggest arms dealers in the world. And we sell this to both sides to make sure this will never stop. Congress might want to look at the a umf the four donald trump or Hillary Clinton wins. Thank you for hearing my call. Host up next on the independent line we have matthew from indiana. Good morning. Caller i just wanted to say s at every Political Party i mess. We have democrats who have no clue what they really want to do , and the republicans want to put the hammer down on everybody. The simple fact is that america has created so many of its own problems over several decades. We propped up saddam and then we got him out. We got Osama Bin Laden to fight the soviets and now we need to take a step back and look at our policies which obviously are not working and maybe we should just back off. It is obvious we cannot control what is happening in other countries. We are letting our company suffer. All we do is we go over there and we kill thousands of people and we erase the populace and we walk away and expect nothing to happen. It is foolish. Slate and the simple madness. And then you look at the congress. We might as well have mentally handicapped monkeys. Host at was matthew from indiana. Up next we have james from mobile, alabama. What is your reaction this morning . Well, i dont really trust the media anymore. And i dont know if this actually happened. But if it did happen, the eu keeps saying that the us is near the eu headquarters in brussels, you have to remember that the United States went into the middle east and started bombing people. Then they got the eu and the countries in europe like france and brussels and the rest of those countries to go in and help them. If you drop bombs on people all the time, guess what . They will be mad at you. They wont sit back and let you continue to drop arms on them. If we want to stop some of this and so many callers have tried to point this out, but nobody is hearing it, the media is not doing a good job, we are dropping bombs on those peoples families. Host that was james calling in from mobile. Up next we have jesse from the republican line from pennsylvania. Good morning. Caller good morning. About five years ago i had the occasion to spend five days across from the entrance to the Brussels Airport. I can speak from air i can speak for experience, i was waiting for a flight that didnt and income. So i went back and forth many times. Security at that point, five years ago, was very scarce. And there other things, i wont anyway, i found that the security was nonexistent. You go right up to the gate and insight to the counters to check in on flights at go back out. And the hotel was right next to the entrance, convenient. Host let me ask you this. It appears that this particular attack happened outside of the departures area, before the security checkpoint. Are you concerned about security here in the United States . Would you see at airports and subway stations . Caller absolutely. I have flown a lot and i think we all should at every airport, we should have security at the door. Just set up a checkpoint at the doors. I have another radical solution and that is to not allow any luggage to go with the passengers. Put it on a different plane. In. that was 70 calling we have mike from georgia. What is your reaction to this mornings attacks . Caller i just feel sorry for those people. This would never happen in the u. S. The u. S. Is a strong country. Of hisy thing im scared about these individual in the ver. , if it does, it will ne happen in the u. S. I dont think a lot of people know the importance of prayer. It is very important that we pray. We pray every day for safety. Because what was his name trump, we dont eat that kind of a person to run this country. Host i want to get to a few more calls before the show. Up next on the republican line, glenn calling from florida. Caller yes. Thank you to cspan. Following up on the young lady of minutes ago, talking about the security of airports, i have an idea. Excuse me. Im having a coughing spell. Host we only have a few seconds. Damage proof from bombs. Electronic equipment would set [coughing]b host he is having trouble with the cough. Lugo to our independent line. Robert from maryland. What is your reaction to this terrorist attack . Caller yes, i am also a disabled vietnam veteran. And in our war, we left 2 Million People grieving. My comment is this. It doesnt matter what the politics is.
