You are in the group of young veterans ive been told several times. And ive had some difficulty because of that to get it through, they always thought i was younger than i was. He looked too young . And healthier than what i was, i had heart problems, surgery and many times my mother and dad, my dad passed away when i was quite young. I was 11 years old, my dad passed away and it was from the First World War that took his life. And it put me in a bad situation as far as financial structure of a home, it made it hard for me. It was hard to get established where we could really go to school like we wanted to, so i did not finish high school. Gardening is one of my greatest delights. This weekend on American History tv on cspan3. Veteran norman about his time serving as a cameraman for the last norman hatch talked about his time later he discusses serving as part of the allied occupation force of japan and seeing the devastation caused by the atomic bomb on nagasaki. The World War Ii Museum conducted this interview in 2013 for its oral history collection. This is the second of a twopart interview. Nobody but a few men had been in combat before. My main job was to teach the photographers that were there as a division protrump section how to operate. When i reported in, i had a meor and a captain senior to. I was at that time a master sergeant. So i had applied for the warrant officer set up, but i didnt know whether i would be approved for it. People did not look on photography even in those later days so to speak of the war as being anything really important. You had to force your way into things to get what you wanted done

I was born and raised in the country. At the time of growing up, my father was in the dairy business. We were farm people and we lived in a farm community. We had 11 kids born to our family. Some of them back in the teens and when the flu hit in 1918, the epidemic came along, we lost most of them. But five of us survived. I wasnt born yet. I wasnt born until 1923. Of course the flu epidemic ended in 1919. We had no military influence in our community at all. There was no bases. People who went in the army back at that time and we didnt know there was any other branch of the service. Because we thought everybody went into the army. The army was the army and included everybody. The army or military service was not too well thought of in those days. You went in the army because you were in trouble with the law or you were too lazy to work. Thats the only reason you went into the military. We had a couple of fellows in our community who apparently didnt like to farm. They didnt like hoeing
