In North Carolina three university students, all muslims, were shot to death. Police have charged their neighbor, craig hicks with first degree murder. Larry another now i know this is a pretty serious story for a comedy show but it raises some very important questions first question being why did these attacks happen . There are two very different theorys. Theory number one comes from the police. Investigators say the attacks stem from a longrunning dispute over park spaces. Larry that sounds like a pretty insane motive for murder. But im from l. A. Where people shoot you for changing lanes so i get it, okay. I have seen a lot of crazy out there. Members of the Muslim Community suggest a darker motive hate. This has hate crime written all over it. Larry yup, just like emojis it gets more interesting when things get darker. laughter but how can this not be a hate crime . I mean look ive had arguments with people over parking spaces. Ive never followed them to their house well, okay, might have followed them to their house once. Ive never gone inside well, i went inside once. No, he left his door open. Technically he didnt leave it open but it was so easy to jiggle that lock, what was i supposed to do . But the point is, where why does this even matter if it is a hate crime . The effect is muslims in america are beginning to feel targeted and if the government says its a hate crime, maybe people will start to listen. So who is this guy . Neighbors described him as constantly angry, and a Facebook Page believed to have been created by hicks is filled with posts assailing people of religion and faith. Larry that sounds like every Facebook Page. I think i was poked by this nut. In the facebook way. laughter applause all right, what else do we know about him . He continually called to get cars towed off the property where he lived. It actually got to the point where he was no longer allowed to call a car in. If he called, we wouldnt go out. Larry sounds very suspiciously look another guy who used to call the authorities all the time and took justice into his own hands. This could have been North Carolinas version of zimmerman. You know. Going around chasing around a guy because hes black, and claiming he was just trying to protect the neighborhood. Larry seriously, whats going on with all these racist elmer fudds, right . Hewwo. And our very own nightly show contributor, shenaz treasury. You were raised muslim right . Yes. Larry do you think this is a hate crime . Does it feel like a hate crime . I think the more important question is why everyone was so quick to jump to the fact that this hasnt be a hate crime that this had to be about a parking dispute. If you look at the facts, i think the fact that, you know, the daughters had the victims, i should say had said he had come to their door several times with a gun in his waistband. No other neighbors had said that. There were no cars parked. It didnt happen in a parking lot. And more importantly, it was point blank. It was execution style. They were all shot in the head spp he had expressed concern he hated them. Larry he showed more hate than dispute. Exactly. Larry than parking dispute. Exactly. On the flip side, if you think about whether this is or isnt a hate crime, you cant look at this as an isolated incident. In america, in recent amongst, weve seen an increase in antimuslim sentiment not just on the news, and not just from people like bobby jindal who is qoinsed muslims are invaded america. Larry there are a lot of feelings out there. There are a lot of feelings everywhere. Larry dean, youre muslim also, a comic. Yes, i am. Larry a comic and a lawyer. So youre an expert at being hated. laughter why does it matter if these killings are classified as a hate crime . Does that matter to us significantly . It does from a legal point of view just so people understand, if its a hate crime tmeans an enhanced penalty. In this case the man killed three people. Its undisputed. Larry hes going to get punished. It matters, culturally, is there a reason it matters . It does. There are people in america on the right who said islamo phobia say it doesnt exist. They call me names on twitter and say i dont hate you because youre muslim. They do hate me because im muslim. They say youre a terrible muslim, go back to your country which is new jersey. Larry do they say go back to new jersey . They say go back to your country, but i am from jerz. In our community its not covered. This got headlines but in the last few weeks, there was a muslim building in houston burned down. Larry there was a protest going on. There was a march down broadway, and i saw People Holding signs saying, muslim lives matter. That was very emotional to me. I was like why are they take our slogan . laughter is it helpful to the cause to link it to the black lives matter thing . I think there are strength in numbers, man. But its different a different history and a different culture. But, you know larry you dont think it matters though . No, it does matter. It matters that people are talking about it and it matters matters that the dialogues are happening. And, you know, its a good its a good play to run. Larry i know youre from india. I want to get your perspective. Were talking about islamophobia in other places. How is it in other places . You guys are babies when it comes to islamophobia. My sister had to hide her 14year love affair with her boyfriend who she is now married to and she had to height hyde it not just from my family but her friends families. When i was a kid no when i was a kid, i would say they would have arabs on tv and they were always like oil guys with lots of wives. And i thought that was cool. Its true. A lot of our friends has been saying arab is the new blark or muslim is the new black. Larry everybody is trying to be the new black so quick. Its so in vogue. The point im saying there are very few americans who actually know a muslim personally. I think pew and time came out with polls showing nearly 60 of americans never met a muslim. They rely on media, you, and sadly on people like bobby jindal. Larry your boy. Exactly. Who say things and who portray muslims in a kind of consistently negative light hes not being helpful. Yeah. Larry do you think the media is playing a part in this . The media is just great. Look at the images of isis and al qaeda. How you can not feel uncomfortable about muslims when you see that all the time . I think ahmed is right 62 of americans say they dont have a muslim friend. I want to be your muslim friend. I wont help you move or drive you to the airport you dont want a muslim driving you to the airport. The truth is if all you see in the media is whats going on and you have no muslim friend, youre going to think the worst. Thats truly whats going to happen. I think its an important issue for him. And i think not only did he get accused of being a muslim but he also got accused of being a drug dealer. Larry hes had a lot of profiling. A lot of profiling.
