Texas. This one about an hour from austin. The feds looking at whether its connected to the serial bomber. Stand by. We have much more on that coming up. But first, legal drama here in washington. President trump is looking to add a highprofile, highpowered attorney to his legal team as special counsels russia investigation veers ahead. He is a former solicitor general, former assistant attorney general at the Justice Department. He was part of the legal team that helped overturn the gay marriage ban here in the United States, and he argued the bush versus gore Citizens United cases before the United States supreme court. The overture to olson is part of a legal shakeup. The president has talked about firing ty cobb while john dowd talked about resigning. The addition of the trump legal team, by the way, is joe digeneva and claims people in the Justice Department and the fbi have been trying to frame the president. All of this just nine days after the president tweeted this the failing New York Times purposely wrote a false story stating that i am unhappy with our legal team on the russia case and that im going to add another lawyer to help out. Wrong. I am very happy with my lawyers john dowd, ty cobb and jay sekulow. They are doing a great job and have shown conclusively there was no collusion with russia. Just excuse for losing. The only collusion was that done by the dnc, the democrats and crooked hillary. A hillary flunkie knows nothing about me and is not given access. Clearly she had some pretty good information. Lets bring in our correspondent pamela brown. Pamela, what are you learning about this possible shakeup, the addition coming in for the legal team of the president . Reporter we have learned the legal team has reached out to Theodore Olson to join the legal team. Dunn is not good with this given they are tied to the russia investigation. It is known that the president s aides had reached out to ted olson earlier on when they were searching for lawyers to represent him in the russia probe, and ted olson also declined at that time. But its clear here, wolf, that there isnt growing increasingly agitated and calling Robert Mueller by name for the first time on twitter. He is realizing that the russia probe is seemingly only ramping up. Its not expected to end any time soon despite what he has been told by his lawyers. And wolf, sources tell us that the president s lawyers as well as investigators with Robert Muellers team actually met in person last week to discuss possible topics, more specifics of topics to go over if an interview does happen with the president , including Jeff Sessions role in the firing of james comey and what the president knew about his former National Security adviser Michael Flynn and his conversations about sanctions with sergei kislyak, the former russian ambassador. But wolf, as you know, the president has publicly said hes willing to sit down with Robert Mueller, that hes eager to do so, but privately sources tell us hes been vascillating on that as hes realizing the russia probe is not slowing down any time soon, wolf. Thank you, pamela brown. Well have more live coverage with you later. Lets bring in cnn contributor and analyst ella johnson and gloria borger. You know ted olson well, you know the others. What do you think . As pamela said, weve been trying to report this the last couple of days, and its very clear whats going on from our sources that the president thought this was going to be over. He was listening to his attorneys, and we all know this because we reported it. They were saying, it will be over by november, no, by december, no, early in the new year. There is a subpoena for the Trump Organization. They get a bunch of questions or topics that they look at, including the ones pamela is talking about, which talked about sessions role in the firing of comey, what did the president know about general flynns conversations with the russians. The president says, wait a minute, ive been getting bad advice. This isnt going to end any time soon, and he blows up. And john dowd and he talk over the weekend, im told, and the president dowd ends up sending that tweet, which was clearly approved or encouraged or urged by the president , and dowds tweet was critical of mueller. So i think what the president is trying to do now is figure out where to go. Hes unhappy with everyone because its not over. And as a result, his lawyers are also struggling with what to do next. So i think its a big mess, to be honest about it, and john dowd, however, is the person who has been communicating with mueller all the time. If you were to remove him or he were to remove himself, and hes been the gobetween, i think that looks very bad for the president , and its a difficult situation when youre trying to deal with the special counsel. He clearly is frustrated, ileana, the president. He clearly is not happy that this investigation which he calls a witch hunt, a hoax, is going on and on and on, and theres been some concern he may go ahead and fire mueller, although the speaker responded to those fears earlier today. Listen to this. The special counsel should be free to follow through his investigation to its completion without interference, absolutely. I am confident that hell be able to do that. Ive received assurances that his firing is not even under consideration. We have a system based upon the rule of law in this country. We have a Justice System and no one is above that Justice System. So what are you hearing, ileana . Look, when you hear paul ryan say that sort of thing, weve heard republican senator Lindsey Graham come out and say that firing Robert Mueller would be an impeachable offense. These republicans are going on tv to talk to the president and set clear parameters for him to tell him that firing bob mueller will turn yinto an even bigger headache for you than bob mueller is right now. Dont go there. But i think there are two points to make on the broader drama with the president. The first is that the legal advice, quote, unquote, that the president has been getting is mixed in with his lawyers attempting to manage him by telling him that this is going to be over soon, dont tweet, and so on. And thats why its gotten tricky because he was clearly going to catch on that this isnt actually over when my lawyers are telling me its going object over. Second point is that the constant of all of the drama surrounding the white house. Personnel drama with his lawyers, the broader personnel with the white house. The broader drama is with the white house. What you hear the president express with his white house personnel and his cabinet, its the same deal with the lawyers. He simply gets frustrated with the people surrounding him. And adam, he clearly wants those lawyers to be mor mor more assertive, go on television and make the case with him. He certainly wants them to whip up the base, keep the base supporting him. I think whats interesting about this also is his frustration goes beyond just russia when it comes to he has this instinct, and he wants to take action, and his advisers, whether area lawyers or his National Security adviser or others, are trying to keep him from doing what his gut is telling him to do. Theyre trying to manage him, like you said. Whether its north korea, do you talk to the leader of north korea . Whether its the iran deal. And he alluded in his Public Statement today in the oval office, wait and see what im going to do in a month from now when that comes up. So constantly you can see that he wants to go further and people are just trying to keep him from going as far as he maybe wants to go. And so what we dont know in the mueller case and what ryan is saying is the president is the kind of person that clearly is willing to go a lot further than what people will tell him he should be doing. So i wouldnt rule out the possibility that in a few months from now, in one of these fits of rage, he does go further. And he clearly is upset that this is going on and on and on, and also that muellers team is looking at Trump Organization business records, which earlier he had told the New York Times would cross a red line. Hes upset at all of that. And you combine that with the fact that hes telling his friends that he knows how to do this job now. He wants to surround himself with people that arent going to tell him no all the time anymore. That was part of the issue with barry cohn, it may be the deal with mcmaster. You have a president that may feels emboldened. I got this job with someone who isnt telling him no. I quickly want to go to austin, texas. There is a News Conference on the latest developments in the serial bomber case. Right now they are investigating this incident. Due to the nature of this incident and past events, we have all of them on scene as a precautionary measure to ensure the community is safe. Again, we are still investigating this incident. Now, if you see anything out of the ordinary or anything suspicious, we are asking that you call 911 immediately. I dont have any further information to provide right now regarding the incident itself. We are, again, currently investigating. [ inaudible question ] i dont have information if there is any type of link. Again, we take these suspicious package calls very seriously, and so we ensure that we have all of our partners out here, including our bomb squad, our executive staff just, again, as a precautionary measure. As of right now, we dont have any type of link to say this is, in fact, related to the san antonio incident. [ inaudible question ] any type of package or suspicious package call that we get at the Department Due to past events, we take it very seriously. Thats why we have everyone out here right now, because we want to make sure the community is safe. Can you tell us who called it in and what made it suspicious . I cant give information on the caller at this point in time. I dont have the details on what exactly made the package suspicious or had it identified as a suspicious package. But again, as police officers, or just as a department, when we receive any type of call like this, we make sure we take all the necessary precautionary measures just to ensure the communitys safety. Im sorry, what was that . [ inaudible question ] i dont have any information regarding any type of detonation of any type of package. Again, you can see right now the scene is still very active. As we have more information, well put it out there, but right now were still investigating this incident. [ inaudible question ] i dont have details or specifics on the actual package itself and what made it suspicious. You are asking the public to determine if there is a specific package but you cant tell us how people recognize its a specific package. It sounds very complicated. If you did not order something, if youre not expecting a package, if its something that doesnt have an official label on it, or even if its just a package itself, please call 911, let the officers handle it. Anything suspicious, something out of the ordinary you dont feel comfortable or you feel unsafe about, please call us so we can assist. So thats the latest from the officer destiny winston in austin, texas. Apparently they found a suspicious package that theyre investigating right now at the airport in austin, texas. This follows yet another explosion of some sort of package at a fedex site about an hour, hour and a half away from austin, not too far from san antonio. In austin, the work of a serial bomber. You know something about these types of investigations. We will. The. I think, wolf, we could connect them even without the evidence. Smalltown bombs are very rare these days, and what were dealing with is a psychopath who is killing randomly, which makes it very difficult to find out who this is. What disturbs me is often these bombers will understand one technique, one kind of bomb, and theyll continue to use it until theyre caught. But this guy has gone to trip wires, hes sending it through fedex, and there is no apparent motivation. Thats whats very disturbing and makes it so difficult. Thats why they put this call. Call for someone who is involved in some sort of plot. You could say after the first few this is a racist deal, but the last one to get someone walking along on a trip wire, i would say they dont have any certain motivation. How do they go about finding this individual if its just one person . Its like the euunabomber. If they cant tie things together with metadata, theres really nothing you can do. This guy appears. Were going to be watching this closely. A school was fired up in maryland before the shooter being taken out by a School Resource officer. Theres been another School Shooting here in the United States, this time in maryland. A student shot and wounded two other students at a high school in the town of great mills. Moments ago police made this statement. This is a reality we hope would never come to fruition. This is our worst nightmare. Today at approximately 7 55 a. M. Braiden High School Student austin rawlins, age 17, produced a handgun while in hallway f in Great Mills High School and shot a great mills High School Student, a female who was 16, and a great mills High School Student, a male, who was 14. The School Resource officer, deputy first class Blaine Gaskell was alerted and immediately responded and engaged the shooter. Blaine gaskell fired the shooter in whats been described to me as almost simultaneously the shooter fired. First aid was immediately initiated by deputies, troopers and School Nursing staff to include a tourniquet placed on the shooting victim and cpr. There is an indication that a prior relationship existed between the shooter and the female victim. We are working as we speak to determine if that was, and if so, the extent of that and if it was part of the motive for this shooting. We continue to interview witnesses, collect forensic evidence from multiple crime scenes and examine the shooters Electronic Devices and all aspects of social media and social media traffic. The 14yearold male student was transported to medstar st. Marys hospital, is in stable condition there. The 16yearold female student was transported to pg shock trauma and she is in icu with lifethreatening critical injuries. I would ask that anyone who has any information please call the hot line thats been established, 1800callfbi. Now i would like to introduce the governor of maryland, dr. Larry hogan. Thank you very much for being here today. First of all, i want to thank sheriff tim cameron and this Incredible Team at the st. Marys Police Department who responded in an incredible way with the support of Law Enforcement agencies from neighboring jurisdictions in Calvert County and Charles County together with state police. We got atf and fbi here. This has been a terrific joint effort. I also want to thank all the First Responders who did an incredible job, and i think everybody went above and beyond the call of duty in this particular incident. Its tragic. Our hearts are broken, and were extremely saddened, and our thoughts and prayers are always with the victims, all the students and their families. No parent should ever have to worry about, when they send their kids off in the morning to school, whether theyre going to come home safely or not. We need more than prayers. I want to thank these First Responders in Law Enforcement for the job they did, but we need more. We have to take action. Weve got one of the most aggressive School Safety plans in america that we introduced several weeks ago as an emergency legislation in office. They refused to take action on it. We put 150 million in School Safety, 50 million a year into a Deputy Sheriff that saved people from being injured or killed today. Not every school has that opportunity. And more Mental Health counselors. Its a tragedy. Were going to continue to support Law Enforcement at every level. All our First Responders are going to be here for the community. Were going to be here for the duration. Its outrageous to me we havent taken action yet on Something Like School Safety. Were going to work on getting that done. Thank you. Another School Shooting here in the United States, this time in maryland. Were in great mills. What else are you learning, joe, about this 17yearold gishoote who is dead and about his motive . What we have learned will bring no consolation to family members of the victims of the School Shooting. Nevertheless, officials indicating that apparently there was a private relationship between the shooter and the young woman, the girl who was shot here at the school in Southern Maryland. This was intended to create indiscriminate havoc as the other School Shootings around. Something they havent made clear, and it is important, is the circumstances surrounding the fatal shot that was fired to kill the gunman. The question, of course, there is whether this individual shot himself, in other words, an inflicted gunshot, or whether it was the School Resource officer who responded to the shooting who actually put him down. It goes into the debate of whether to arm personnel, including teachers in schools. Were live here in Southern Maryland waiting for more information. Back to you, wolf. We hope there will be complete full recoveries for the 14yearold male student who was shot and is in stable condition. We hope both of them will wind up okay. Joe, thank you very, very much. Stand big for the White House Press briefing. Sarah sanders reportedly will be briefing reporters any minute now. Well, of course, have live coverage. There are lots of questions reporters will ask, especially the latest developments involving the president of the United States telling roreporte he spoke with russian president Vladimir Putin, russputting out statement that the president congratulated president putin for his election. This is what he said with the crown prince. I had a call with president putin and congratulated him on his electoral victory. The call had to do also with the fact that we will probably get together in the nottoodistant future so that we can discuss arms, we can discuss the arms race. As you know, he made a statement that being in an arms race is not a great thing. That was right after the election, one of the first statements he made. And we are spending 700 billion there are this year on our military, and a lot of it is we are going to remain stronger than any other nation in the world by far. We had a very good call and i suspect we will probably be meeting in the nottoodistant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control, but we will never allow anybody to have anything even close to what we have. And also to discuss ukraine and syria and north korea and various other things. So i think probably well be seeing president putin in the nottoodistant future. It follows a statement the white house put out congratulating the russian leader. John mccain, the chairman of the Senate Arms Service committee, issued this statement. Listen to this. An american president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections. And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in the free and Fair Election to determine their countrys future, including the countless russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist putins regime. Very, very strong words from senator john mccain. Jeff zeleny, our senior white house correspondent, is with us joining the panel as well. The president issued a relatively positive statement about putin and that deeply angered senator mccain. It certainly did. When you listen to the president s words there, its so clear what hes not talking about. Hes not talking about the sanctions issued by his own Treasury Department just last week. Hes not talking about the attack that happened in the United Kingdom there. Hes talking as though he is a leader of a democracy somewhere else not given the context of russia. Again, it falls on senator john mccain to recount the conversation. It reminds me of Sarah Sanders being asked the question was putin a friend or foe, and she really had a hard time answering that. He has never, or seldom, done any scolding at all for the bad things hes done. And the kremlin put out a phone conversation that the president had with president putin. The president never mentioned the poisoning of this exrussian spy in england and his daughter or some of the other sensitive issues, russian meddling in the u. S. President ial election, for example, never came up. The Trump Administration has been in a sort of fascinating position with regard to russia, because even as the president as refused to say anything negative about Vladimir Putin, his administration actually has taken action. They did take action and posed sanctions in the wake of that attack in london, but its been hugely overshadowed by the president s refusal to say anything negative about the russian president , and you can see russia using that to its advantage by playing up the president s kind words toward putin, and i think thats where the president really gets himself into trouble. Adam, if you were following it earlier, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee, the vice chairman, republican and democrat Richard Burke and mark warner, they came out and said the russians not only interfered in the election, but they also got into some Electoral Systems and some states. The evidence that has come out about what the russians were doing in terms of probing those electrical systems. The Obama Administration approach to the Senate Majority leader mcconnell and tried to get them at the time, in 2016, to take a firmer stance with the states, and mcconnell was extremely skeptical in that meeting when he was approached by the thenObama Administration officials and told what russia was up to. Obviously the dynamics have changed on the hill, at least to a certain extent, where you would have potentially a legislation that would get bipartisan support that would try to encourage states to take more action. But you can tell the republicans are walking this fine line, recognizing they cannot impose and will not impose on states to do certain things because they realize thats a red line that they cant cross. So its unclear with this legislation thats being proposed and with any action thats being called for how much of a difference its actually going to make in the end because there is a reluctance to really going too far in tightening up the systems. As we await the White House Press briefing, i want to bring in ohio counsel tim ryan. Hes a democrat on the appropriations committee. Congressman, thank you for joining us. Let me get your impression of the president of the United States issuing a statement congratulating Vladimir Putin for his election win. Hes trying to destroy our electoral system. Hes aiming and targeting the very fabric of our society. Thats our political elections, our president ial elections, and i come from a pretty pragmatic place outside youngstown, ohio, and i think the average person sitting there watching the president of the United States handling Vladimir Putin with kid gloves like hes doing right now, given everything russia is trying to do, there would be backlash on that type of behavior. So you would an american president does not congratulate a dictator on a sham election. Are you with me on that . Absolutely. This is like Saddam Hussain winning votes in his election. He doesnt let anyone get a word in edgewise about a free and open discussion on the freedom of the people. And then to congratulate him, i think, shows how out of touch the president is. Its really sad that i should ungauge like the president did. Its also scary recall, allowing the gassing of innocent people in syria, trying to disrupt us any way they can. Theyre partnered, and all the ways Vladimir Putin is operating against the United States, against a global society, and the president con grgratulates. Its not good. I want to get to some other issues, but why do you think President Trump is so relatively nice to putin . Some of us have hunches as to whats going on here, but i think the best thing we can do is let mueller continue to do his investigation. It seems like with the indictments of 13 people that hes trying to peel the onion back, and then it may get revealed to us exactly why President Trump is handling him with kid gloves. I will say in the heartland, people would be very skeptical of him and say. Does facebook ceo, Mark Zuckerbe zuckerberg, to come um. I believe he does, and i believe Speaker Paul Ryan needs to in a case a dekt. He needs to discuss openly with the United States of america what were talking about with facebook. There are a lot of. Was trump coordinating his campaign skej umt. There is all kind of things we need to. Just like with the issue of fchld many middle of the electoral process. He needs to answer to that. We need to know who knew what when. Why didnt they let these 50 Million People know . I dont know how donald trump ended up with 50 million americans information. Thanks for joining us. We just received word there is a Major New Development of a legal battle between President Trump and a former apprentice contestant who accused President Trump of harassment. Update our viewers, brian. Reporter azervos will have her day in court. She was an apprentice contestant a few years ago. She contends that donald trump groped her and kissed her. He has called the other accusers liars. Summer azervos with her attorney, gloria allred, sued for defamation. She filed that suit here in new york last year. Trumps lawyers tried to get it thrown out. They issued a motion saying you cant sue a president in a state court. He has immunity in a case like this. So the judge in this case spent many weeks reviewing the arguments on both sides, and just in the past few minutes here, we received the filing that confirms azervos can move forward. That trumps motion to throw this case out has failed. And interestingly, the judge is citing the sloan case from the 90s stating that no one is above the law, that the president can be sued and has no immunity in a case like this. Her accusations of harassment will go forward. He says these people are lying about me. But azervos will have her day in court. And now a former playboy model wants out of a confidentiality agreement. Tell us about that. Yes, this is breaking with the New York Times. This involves a playboy model that essentially silenced her from talking about an alleged affair with donald trump. Again, the allegations about an affair with trump are many years old. But she was paid for her silence ahead of the president ial election. Mcdo you ugal is now challengint agreement. This is a lot like the Stormy Daniels case. Of course, Stormy Daniels is also suing, seeking to validate the agreement she signed. We know she is set to speech this sunday. This administration is making sure their government does that by allowing them to be more productive by cutting their taxes and empowering them to make their own decisions about investing and their operations and by working to make sure our trade agreements are fair and other countries play by the rules. A proclamation, declaring today at 45th annual national ag day. The president was pleased to welcome Saudi Crown Prince to the white house. This meeting provided an opportunity to make progress on a range of issues, including syria and its sponsors, yemen, the gcc and Israeli Palestinian peace efforts. We were able to engage with saudi leadership as we do on an ongoing basis to increase regional issues, advanced shared objectives and new channels and capabilities to nugsallize these interactions. This afternoon the president also met will also meet with top Law Enforcement officials, members of congress, administration and leaders to discuss the threats of lawless sanctuary cities. Sanctuary jurisdictions release thousands of criminal aliens out of our prisons and jails and back into our communities. Such policies threaten the safety and security of our people. Every American Family deserves to live in a safety and security in their home and their neighborhood. Sanctuary cities make that goal much more difficult to achieve and the president is committed to restorie ining rule of law i these cities. Were continuing to monitor situations both in austin, texas, and in maryland. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims involved in these situations and well continue to work with state and local Law Enforcement officials around both of those. And with that, ill take your questions. John . Sarah, let me start by asking what the president said about potentially meeting with Vladimir Putin, quote, soon. Theres nothing that will put them in the same city at the same time until november at the earliest. Would that include a visit by putin to the white house or the president going to russia . There are no specific plans made at this time but we want to continue to have a dialogue with russia, continue to talk about some of the shared interests we have, whether its north korea, iran and particularly, as the president noted today, slowing the tensions when it comes to an arms race, something that is clearly important to both leaders. Now that putin has won yet another term as president , is President Trump concerned that he will continue his aggressive posture toward the rest of the world and maybe even increase that posture . Look, well continue to maintain the position that weve had and be tough when necessary. At the same time, we want to continue to have dialogue so that we can work on some of the issues that concern both countries and were going to continue to do that while also continuing to be tough on a number of things, including sanctions on russia, rebuild in our own military and exporting energy, things that we know are not great for russia. Get your reaction to a statement that senator john mccain, chairman of the Armed Service committee put out. Im quoting him directly here. An american president does not leave the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections. By doing so with Vladimir Putin, every russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and Fair Election including countless russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist the regime. How do you respond . The president once again has maintained that its important for us to have a dialogue with russia so that we can focus on some areas of shared interests. At the same time, were going to continue to be tough on them. The president joined other countries in these calls, both germany and france reached out as well as president obama in 2012. These are conversations that sometimes take place and certainly the president finds there to be an importance in having that dialogue with russia so that we can talk about some of the big problems that face the world. Disagree with senator mccains characterization of this as a sham election. We disagree with the fact that we shouldnt have conversations with russia. There are important topics that we should be able to discuss and that is why the president is going to continue to have that dialogue. At the same time, weve been very clear in the actions weve taken that were going to be tough on russia, particularly when it comes to areas that we feel where theyve stepped out of place, we placed tough sanctions on russia and a number of other things where we have shown exactly what our position is. You brought up the context to johns question about timing. You mentioned north korea and iran, is it the president s intention to meet with Vladimir Putin before he sees kim jongun or makes the decision on the Nuclear Iran Deal . We dont have any plans at this time. Nothing in that readout says anything about election meddling. Did the president not raise the issue in that call . I do not believe it came up on that call.
