Devin Patrick Kelley attended activities at the First Baptist church several times and the pastor was concerned. The pastor did know the man. He did know him . He did know him. He did not want him at his church. Why not . He said because he just thought he was not a good person to be around. Anything specific you can say about what he said regarding that . No. He just said he didnt think he was a good person and didnt want him around his church but he said how do i run him away from a church. Lets bring brian todd in. Brian, youre joining us from his hometown, the gunmans hometown. The pastor whose daughter was among the killed who didnt want kelley around. What more have you learned from the sheriff about why kelley may have targeted this particular church . Reporter wolf, that sheriff of Wilson County told me investigators believe he may have targeted his motherinlaw by going into that church. He may have wanted to target his motherinlaw by wanting to go into that church on that day. We know from authorities the motherinlaw was not at the church at the time of the shooting. She attended the church on occasion but she was not there. Investigators believe he may, may have wanted to target his motherinlaw when he went into the church that day. Also, wolf, we have come here to comal county, the Sheriff Department gave us new information. They say in june of 2013 this suspect devin kelley was investigated for a Sexual Assault. He was not charged in that case. The Sheriffs Office will not make the victim but he was investigated for Sexual Assault. That case is still open but he was not charged in the case. The sheriff telling us that the case stalled probably because the suspect kelley moved out of the state. We have information to indicate he was in colorado sometime in 2014 where there was another case involving cruelty to ani l animal. Also we have obtained documents from comal county. This is the home county where the suspect lived. Documents from the courts here saying that in 2014 Law Enforcement was called to kelleys house because a friend of kelleys girlfriend had told Law Enforcement, had called them and said the friend had been receiving text from kelleys girlfriend saying her boyfriend was abusing her according to this caller who talked to police, the girlfriend identified as danielle fields, the wife of the shooter at the time of the Church Shooting sunday, the girlfriend, danielle shields told her friend that her arms were red and he [ inaudible ] but when authorities got to the home to investigate the texts and what she had told her friend they were told there was no trouble and all teenage drama according to documents we have found, wolf. Good work, brian todd in texas. Thank you very much. Joining us now to discuss this is former atf special agent in charge sam, they have the cell phone of this killer but they cant get into the cell phone at least not yet. This is a big problem. Its a big problem for Law Enforcement and were really seeing that evidence over the last couple of years as we are at these crime scenes, these horrific crime scenes and so desperate to get information at the potential motive, if there are any other coconspirators involved and the encryption piece hampers Law Enforcements efforts to get that critical information. Will they get into the cell phone and see the social media, what he was doing, who he was emailing, texting . Yeah. It depends on the type of cell phone they have. And what kind of software is on it. Theyre going to make every effort but it is a very, very difficult process for Law Enforcement to get into these phones. If they want a thorough investigation they have to get into that cell phone and check to see what he was doing in there. Absolutely. There was stunning red flags as you know, sam, concerning this gunman that clearly didnt prevent him from committing this massacre. He had a history of animal abuse and the subject of a Sexual Assault investigation. He was given a bad conduct discharge from the u. S. Air force. Le all of this years before the shooting the air force failed to relay that Vital Information to the fbi, put him in the database, the fact he had spent a year at a brig, a military brig in a prison for what he did to that stepson of his and what he did to his wife. How do you explain the fact that he was still able after all of that to go out and apparently legally purchase an assaulttype weapon and other guns . Well, ill tell you, wolf, i mean, first and foremost, it breaks my heart every time we have to sit here like this and talk about this particular tragic incident and how the shooter came upon getting the gun. What fell through the cracks. What kind of loopholes or work arounds exist in current federal law. Keep in mind that there are literally thousands upon thousands of firearms transactions that occur every month. Millions of records that exist in the ncic system. Just the sheer volume of nervous that has to go to the fbi that every time a gun purchase is made that they have to access unfortunately at times stuff is going to fall through the cracks. In this particular instance and i dont know every detail but the nature of his discharge did not qualify as a prohibitive factor thereby preventing him from purchasing the firearm. That would be dishonorable discharge. There are new answers in the law but when you get into federal firearms laws theres technical aspects to it whether it could be a Mental Illness issue, again the air force acknowledges they may have made a major mistake. Believe me, im not justifying it. I think its more in terms of the interpretation whether it could be submitted to the ncic because it did fall under the dishonorable discharge. They got to go back and scrub who else may fit that template if you will. Absolutely. And make sure it doesnt happen again. Sam, thanks very much for joining us. Thank you. 20 people injured in that texas Church Massacre. Ten are in the hospital and four treated at University Hospital in san antonio about a half hour away. The Senior Vice President for Strategic Communications and patient relations is joining us now. Lenny thanks very much for you and the entire staff. Give us an update on the conditions of the four patients undergoing treatment. Yeah. We have four patients as you mentioned. Two adults and two children. All of them are still in trauma, intensive care units. The children are in Critical Condition and the adults have been up grated to serious condition. How difficult has it been dealing with such a horrific tragedy and clearly a very closeknit community . Absolutely. San antonio is about 30 miles away from that community but south texas as a whole looks at itself as one Big Community and there are people here who live in that community, who have family in that community. Ive been in this position here at the hospital for 17 years and by far, this has been the absolute worst situation that ive ever had to help manage. Its just been horrific. So many of the 26 people that were murdered including a 17monthold little child. How tough is it for you and your staff to cope with all of that emotionally . As i said, we have not had anything to this scale ever. Ive talked to a lot of the members of the trauma team. I was here on sunday as the patients started to come in. First of all, i have to commend them for their professionalism. They responded to this with amazing precision and they train for this and it went off really without a hitch but at the same time, were human beings, many of us are parents and sunday night i think, you know, as the adrenalin wears off you begin to crack a little bit. We have done some things, we call it code lavender where were providing support not only to the families and patients but to all of the Staff Members and physicians helping to care for the patients. Thats ongoing yesterday and today. You got to worry about that and its good you have the resources for the folks, the people at the hospital among others to deal with the Emotional Trauma that theyre clearly going through. The four patients that you still have yeah. The four patients that you still have, are they stable, are they eventually going to be able to go home . We sure hope so. The two children remain in Critical Condition. Theyre receiving excellent care and consistent monitoring and the adults have been upgraded to serious condition. Certainly theres more optimism on those cases. But everybody is doing Everything Possible to assure all four of these patients get to go home. I hope so. Thanks very much for joining us. My pleasure. I wish it was under better circumstances. I wish it were, too. Were also hearing for the first time from that brave man who shot and chased off the Church Gunman Stephen Willeford is being hailed as a hero but insists he is not. Willeford says he was just doing what needed to be done. I grabbed a handful of ammunition and started loading my magazine. I ran outside. I didnt even take time to put my shoes on. I noticed a gray suv sitting across from the church or in front of the church across the street from my neighbors house with the drivers side door open. In the middle of the street. I didnt know it at the time but the engine was running. And im trying to survey the situation not knowing whats going on. And then i saw a man in a black tactical helmet with a dark shaded helmet on and obviously, looked to me like it was bulletproof vest. And he had a pistol in his hand and we exchanged gunfire. The people of that church, theyre friends of mine and family and every time i heard a shot i knew that that probably represented a life. I was scared to death. I was. I was scared for me and i was scared for every one of them and i was scared for my own own that lived less than a block away. Im no hero. I am not. I think my god, my lord protected me and gave me the skills to do what needed to be done. And i just wish i could have gotten there faster but i didnt know. I didnt know what was happening. Amazing man, indeed. Thank you for that. Just ahead, emotional new account from those who knew this family that lost eight ones lost in a matter of seconds. Plus from rocket man to lets make a deal, President Trump shifting his tone on north korea ahead of a major speech tonight with very high stakes implication. Cnn is on both sides of the Demilitarized Zone and explosive testimony by one of the president s Campaign Advisers, who carter page now admits to meeting and his answer on what advice he gave the then candidate now president. Need i . Then we found out how many years that money would last them. How long do you think well keep oooooohhh you stopped youre gonna leave me back here at year 9 . How did this happen . President trump arriving in south korea today getting ready for a speech to the south Korean National assembly this evening and were seeing a shift in tone from the president. There have been no taunts aimed at kim jongun and no threats of war while north korea says its watching President Trumps visit closely and vowing to bolster what it calls its Nuclear Sword of justice. Cnn is on both sides of the korean border. Sara murray is standing by with the president. Will, what are you hearing from the North Koreans . Reporter wolf, north korean officials in pyongyang told me they will listen very closely to President Trumps speech in south korea, a major speech. The administration has been hinting they may announce whether to put north korea back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, a list they were taken off almost ten years ago during negotiations at that time over north Koreas Nuclear program. We know how that turned out. North korea has a Bigger Nuclear arsenal and more advanced missile capabilities than ever but they feel they are not there yet when it comes to rounding our their Nuclear Program and vowing to conduct more tests at a time of their choose. The question, will that time be during President Trumps trip here in asia and how would the administration respond to that . We heard a conciliatory tone from President Trump in south korea. The North Koreans acknowledge words do matter with President Trump indicating a willing rns to sit down for negotiations however the north korean are looking at the actions of the United States. There were drills happening to kick off in the pacific involving three u. S. Aircraft Carrier Strike groups. A major show of force by the United States that north korea says only encouraging them to showcase their own Nuclear Strength to send in their words a clear message to the Trump Administration after negotiations between the u. S. And north korea have broken down. North koreans not ruling out talks all together but say they feel the need to prove to the Trump Administration they have an Effective Nuclear deterrent and their nukes are here to stay whereas the United States wants full denuclearization of the korean peninsula. Wolf, they say their nukes are here to stay. Will ripley reporting for us. Thanks very much for that report. Will is in pyongyang, north korea. President trump pivoted his message this morning saying north korea should come to the table and make a deal and he then offered this assessment. Will be meeting with the various generals about the situation in north korea. And i think we have a lot of good answers for you over a period of time and ultimately it will all work out. Has to work out. Lets go to our White House Correspondent sara murray. What do we expect to hear from the president s major speech later tonight . Reporter well, wolf, were told the president is going to put the conflict with north korea in a Historical Context and talk up the importance of the alliance between the u. S. And south korea in addition to calling on china, calling on russia to put more pressure on north korea to isolate this nuclear nation. But these are the messages the president has been driving essentially since he took office. What people are going to be watching for is the tone, are we going to see the tone that we have gotten from President Trump state side where hes lobbying nicknames at kim jongun are is he offering a rosier take on diplomatic efforts and making it clear he sees a military option as a last resort. There were some antitrump protests in seoul. What were they protesting . Reporter there were protests and they were chanting things like no trump, no war. Look, there is anxiety here in south korea about the rhetoric that we have heard from President Trump. The people here are the neighbors to north korea. Any decision the u. S. Makes particularly a military decision would have a direct impact on their lives. That is an unease, uncertainty that analysts have said is palpable in this region. I think thats what we saw from the protesters today. Sara murray in seoul. Thanks very much. Well have live coverage of the president s speech later tonight. Here on cnn. A democratic lawmaker walking out of a moment of silence on the house of representatives floor over protest of guns. Ill speak live with the congressman who represents the churchs district, about this and more and what hes been told about the investigation. Plus, he always raises eyebrows when he speaks but one of the president s former Campaign Advisers giving testimony about who knew what involving his own russian contacts during the Trump Campaign. And i couldnt wait to get my pie chart. The most shocking result was that im 26 native american. I had no idea. Just to know this is what im made of, this is where my ancestors came from. Were learning some potentially significant details in the russia investigation involving former Trump Campaign adviser carter page. A transcript from his six plus hour testimony before the House Intelligence Committee has been release exposing some revealing details about pages trip to russia last summer during the president ial campaign. Cnns reporter is skroining us now. What did you learn . Carter page has previously said his trip to russia during the campaign was a personal trip and that he didnt meet with russian officials but we are now learning quite a different story from what based on his testimony. Page who was invited to speak in russia after joining the Trump Campaign now says that during that trip he met with Russias Deputy Prime Minister and emailed Trump Campaign officials wanting to relay information from that meeting. Page also testified that he told several Trump Campaign officials that he was going on the trip and was asking them for permission and advice according to him. He emailed he says hope hicks, Corey Lewandowski and jd gordon who was a National Security adviser to the campaign. Now gordon tells cnn he doesnt remember the email from page and lewandowski reportedly said page shouldnt represent the campaign while in russia. And also interestingly, page floated the idea of then candidate trump taking a trip to russia. Now, this is the second person on the campaign who had access to senior members of the campaign suggesting donald trump should go to russia. We should note that page told the committee that he was interviewed by the fbi which is investigating russian collusion and was interviewed where he says at least six times. Wolf no matter how anyone views this, we have at least two people that had access to the highest levels of the campaign admitting to talking to russians who as we now know were trying to influence the campaign. Very significant developments. Thank you very much. Meantime, the attorney general of the United States Jeff Sessions is back in the hot seat. The attorney general will appear for an oversight hearing next week in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Following a host of new revelations about his knowledge of contact between the Trump Campaign and russia. Here with us our chief legal analyst jeffrey toobin. All of the general generals past denials will come up. How does he clean this up . His previous testimony had been that he had absolutely no connection during the Trump Campaign with anyone from russia and he didnt know about any contacts between Trump Campaign officials and russia. He has since had to correct his testimony once where he has acknowledged that he spoke to the russian ambassador, he says, in passing. Now, with the guilty plea, there is another occasion where hes apparently been told of contacts between russia and the campaign. Presumably he will say with such a minor and passing comment he didnt notice it but it is never good to have to correct your testimony once much less twice. He went through the six hours of testimony, the transcript was just released by the committee. And he says he went to moscow and he shared information specific information with senior Trump Campaign officials. Most of whom dont remember. It was so insignificant once again, clearly they believe it wasnt all that important. Well, you know, i read the transcript, too. What you need to understand about carter page is what a deeply eccentric figure he is. He took the 5th regarding documents but agreed to testify. He doesnt have a lawyer. His testimony is all over the place. But again, its a similar situation with people with the Trump Campaign. At first they say there were no contacts with russia. Now he acknowledges speaking to this very high level official deputy Prime Minister. It should be pointed out that page is very insistent he wasnt aware of any emails that were hacked. He certainly says he didnt engage in anything improper but again, its another story of someone involved in the Trump Campaign initially denying contacts with the russian government. And later admitting some contacts but nothing he says untoward. As you know, last week the special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted two former top campaign officials, Trump Campaign officials, a Third Campaign official pleaded guilty to criminal charges. Now there are reports out there that the president s former National Security adviser Michael Flynn might be indicted by mueller as well. What do you think . It certainly would be even more significant than the Paul Manafort indictment. He was the Campaign Chairman. He was the Campaign Chairman but Michael Flynn was closer to candidate trump. He was a really intimate adviser for months and became the National Security adviser and was briefly one of the most important people working in the white house. If hes indicted, that would bring the net a lot closer to the president and to people in the very most inner circle in the white house. As bad as the Paul Manafort indictment was and having your Campaign Chairman is not a good thing having him indicted but having Michael Flynn indicted would be an even more serious blow. His first National Security adviser in the white house only lasted about a month or so. Still, that would be a Major Development. Thank you very much. Jeffrey toobin helping us. Royal family all in the name of corruption control and one of the worlds richest business rival, President Trump i should say now in prison in the Ritz Carlton Hotel in riyadh saudi arabia. President trump tweeted i have great confidence in king cole mon and the crown prince of saudi arabia, they know exactly what they are doing. Some of those they are harshly treating have been milking their country for years. Lets bring in the cnn Global Affairs Vice President , scholar at the Woodrow Wilson National Center here in washington. This is a Major Development right now. But give us first of all some historic perspective aaron, you studied the middle east for a long time, worked in the state department for years on the middle east. How big of a deal is this . Its huge. Ive watched the saudis for four years and both with respect to what mahammad is doing inside the kingdom and his Risk Readiness outside in lebanon against qatar and iran and yemen. Middle eastern leaders simply dont behave this way. They look in the Rearview Mirror instead of looking forward and there are few examples where Saddam Hussein invades kuwait. The middle east is usually colored wolf, as you know in gray, not black and white. Here you got a guy of 30something made a bid for absolute power, kind of new Supreme Leader in saudi arabia and theres a cost perhaps and i think we may feel it as well. But by and large this is one of the most intriguing stories in a region that doesnt produce stuff thats new very often. This is new. And the rhetoric between the saudis and the iranians clearly heating up as this story unfolds, the saudis basically accusing the iranians of engaging in acts of war against saudi arabia, blaming them for a Missile Launch at the Riyadh International airport in recent days and now accusing the audis of telling the lebanese Prime Minister he has to resign because his ally of the iranians is part of the government in lebanon. This could explode the situation unless its controlled quickly. I mean thats certainly the case, wolf. The saudis have three main Foreign Policy priorities, iran, iran and iran and theyre watching iranian influence gain capital in four arab capitals, in beirut, damascus, baghdad and in their own backyard. Now a lot i suspect is hyped up for american consumption because it duck tails with the president who wants to contain if not roll back iranian influence in the region and the great Foreign Policy achievement has been to cast a spell over donald trump. You saw in the tweet today that the president saying he has confidence in the young prince because he knows precisely what hes doing. Thats highly arguable statement, wolf. Hes 32 years old. The crown prince of saudi arabia right now. The amazing thing, the billionaire prince who is often seen as the richest man over there is now arrested with others at the Ritz Carton Hotel in riyadh. Showing viewers some video of that. You know, hes been someone who is certainly well known to americans. Hes invested in some of the Biggest Companies here in the United States. Often likened to the Warren Buffett of saudi arabia. What do you make of that . Hes the poster child for the saudi economy. Youre right. He hobknobs with the great and near great. Investment barnkers and hedge funds. I wonder if arresting him is going to backfire . It will shake Investor Confidence and even the king can decide which saudi he wants to imprison. Its not an attractive advertisement. I think prince talal was too big and too independent for the woodbe kings liking and trying to make an example of him and hes certainly not the first and wont be the last of anybody who gets in the wouldbe kings way. You saw the president tweeting hes totally supporting whats going on in saudi arabia. We know jared kushner, his soninlaw was just there meeting with the crown prince and others. Were going to stay on top of this story. Thanks for joining us. Always a pleasure. More on the breaking news of the investigation of the Church Massacre in texas. The sheriff telling cnn the gunman attended several Church Functions prior to the massacre and were also hearing another red flag involving a rape investigation of the killer. Ill speak live with the congressman representing that district. There is more breaking news coming in to cnn. The invests gags of that Church Massacre in texas. Just in were learning the gunman escaped a Mental Health facility in june of 2012 months after being accused of abusing his exwife and stepchild. This just obtained from the police department. Were told the officers were advise d he was a danger to himself and others and been caught sneaking weapons on to a u. S. Air force base. Democratic congressman Vincent Gonzales represents the county where the massacre took place. Congressman, yet another red flag but despite all of this and were learning a lot more horrendous details about this individual, he was able to legally purchase four weapons in the years that followed, two in the state of texas, two in the state of colorado. How does that happen . Is. Its tragic but obviously a lot of folks dropped the ball from the military giving notice to our National Criminal registry and maybe this Health Institution that he was in also there was no communication with other members of the community. I think, you know, my heart and prayers go out to the good people of Wilson County but i think now we need to start having a very serious conversation in washington and in legislatures across the country in getting to the bottom of what the issue is that keeps reoccurring in the United States of america. At a much higher level and it doesnt in other developed countries. I know we get together every time we have an incident like this but its not long before the conversation ends and we move on with our lives. This time we need to stay engaged and find ways to prevent this from being a continuous reoccurrence in the United States. I think we need to start not only talking about gun control laws, but also Mental Health issues and communication between potentially Mental Health officials and gun dealers. I think that should be part of the conversation. There were a lot of gaps in judgment with this young man from the time that he got out of the military to now that he was in a Mental Health institution, to the events that transpired the last few days. Its just awful. And i think that we need to start paying closer attention and trying to get to the route of the problem which has affected america. And as you know, u. S. Air force made a major blunder acknowledged they did not notify the fbi after he served a year in prison for abusing his exwife. Thats correct. And basically hitting this little child repeatedly causing some serious injury to that child. They didnt make a deliberate notification to the fbi. He then went ahead and able to purchase the guns. They said the shooter was a semi automatic. How does that affect the debate over gun control . Well, i think we need to have an intelligent plan Going Forward. Im a gun collector and avid supports man and have the right to bear arms but we need to be smart and careful about it. These 50 clips with capacity of 50 bullets is excertificate i have excessive and needs to be lubed at. And these people that commit assaults on the american public. There should be red flags at every gun dealer when somebody with this profile comes in. God, he spent aier in jail in the military. Dishonorable discharged. History of spousal abuse. I think that should be a red flag. Your colleague in california walked out during a moment of silence. Heres how he explained his actions on Facebook Page flt listen to this. Ive been in too many moments of silences. In just my short career in congress three of the massacres in history has occurred. Ill not be silent. We need to pass gun safety legislation now. Calling for u. S. Background check, ban on assault rifles and bump free stalks as they are called. Is any of that, and you understand whats going on in the u. S. House of representativess right now. Is any of that likely to happen . Its divisive time. I dont know. I would like to see that happen but in all honesty we have a lot of folks on right who may not agree with some of this legislation. But i do believe we should have very tight background checks. We should, if somebody wants to purchase a gun and they have to wait 30day waiting period before they are given the gun that they purchased, i think that should be okay with the public. We need to keep the American People safe. And we need to provide this safety through good legislation. Its happened five times this year. And its happened across the country and state lines and racial and religious barriers. It happens in the Rural Communities and urban communities. So we cant define it in anyone way. But i think Mental Health is a top issue that needs to be considered and creating new legislation. Maybe there needs to be communication between Mental Health officials and Law Enforcement and gun ownership. You know, congressman, in the initial confusion right after we learned of this Church Massacre, and there is always a lot of confusion in the immediate period after a horrific event like this. You were mentioned on cnn and said a name incorrect. Unfortunately. Very unfortunate. But i think we have to step back and learn lessons and make sure it doesnt happen again. Explain what happened here and what lessons we could learn from that. Because Going Forward unfortunate this is going to happen again. Absolutely. And i regret it very much. I was on another National Mainstream media interview and the news producer gave me this name. And i dont follow internet sensations so i wouldnt have known the difference, certainly the Producer Department know the difference. And when i asked the name on cnn this is the name been reported to me i didnt have initial confirmation but i thought i could rely on news producer and even they were duped. So something we need to be careful with moving forward. Especially as the breaking news unfolds, has to be very careful going down the road. Congressman, good luck to you. Our hearts go out to all of them in your district. We will stay in close touch with you. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. Talk to you soon.
