Im christi paul. Im victor blackwell. New evidence, new clues but still no concrete answers about what caused a flight from paris to cairo to crash off the coast of egypt. This morning french officials are confirming smoke alerts did indeed go off just moments before the plane plunged into the Mediterranean Sea with 66 people on board. U. S. And egyptian officials suspect it was the result of a terrorist act. So far though there is no claim of responsibility. Today u. S. Navy planes will continue to help comb an area thats about 180 miles off the coast of alexandria for more debris. We are covering this like only cnn can. Our International Diplomatic editor Nic Robertson is at an airbase in greece. Cnns Senior CorrespondentJim Bittermann is live. We are also tracking the underwater search for clues. Ian lee is live for us live in cairo. Talk about the investigation. On what is the focus right now, ian . Reporter as you guys just point out, we do have that new information coming from the french about the acar system which basically sends information about the plane down to the ground. This is information we got last night as well. Now were hearing it for the first time from authorities that there was smoke aboard this plane minutes before it crashed. This is going to be crucial to the investigation. But right now egyptian officials, the military with their international partners, are scouring for the remains of the plane. They have found luggage, theyve found seats, theyve even found body parts but they do need to find these black boxes and more of the plane to really piece together what exactly happened. Those black boxes will be crucial in determining what was the cause, was this terrorism, was this mechanical. Right now that is is the main focus of this investigation. Ian lee, we appreciate it. Want to check in now with Jim Bittermann at pariss Charles De Gaulle airport. I know some of the families of these victims, jim, were briefed by the French Foreign minister there. Do we know what else he may have said to those families specifically . Reporter well, not specifically. I dont think we are going to hear very much. Hes going to perhaps meet the press somewhere in this hour to talk about this meeting with the families. About 70 family members were at that meeting this morning, 50 french and 20 from other nationalities that were involved. In fact they brought in not only the foreign minister but also a representative of the bea, the main accident investigating authority, as well as someone from the prosecutors office. Immediately after the crash was confirmed in fact a criminal investigation was launched by the prosecutors office, as it is almost automatically whenever a french citizen dies overseas. There is that aspect of it. Basically it was an attempt to brief the families, bring them up to speed and reassure them that everything is being done that can be done to bring them news about their relatives. We know what they really want to know is why and we dont have any information obviously on that just yet. Do we know if they gave any timeline . Are they looking forward, jim . Lot of people are talking about this at several International Events coming up, the french open, the Tour De France. What is being done to reassure the folks that travel through frances airport is indeed secure . Thats a big concern for the french government. The whole image problem that goes with this crash that kind of shown the spotlight on the Security Operations here at Charles De Gaulle airport which have over the last year or so been investigated pretty thoroughly. Theyve changed some things around. They lifted the badges of more than 80 employees because they felt they had been involved in radicalization efforts. It is the kind of thing that sends a chill down the spine of anyone who might be planning to come for the Roland Garros tennis tournament which is coming up. We have the euro 2016 soccer tournament which is going to bring millions of people to france. And later on in the summer the Tour De France bicycle race. All these things coming up, as well as the normal tourism season. This kind of thing, if anything casts doubt upon the Security Operations here at the airport or elsewhere in france, it could really have a damaging effect from a tourist standpoint. So i think the french are doing a lot to try to show that theyre doing everything they can in terms of security. No doubt about it. Jim bittermann, we appreciate it so much. Now with us, a terrorism expert and International Security director at the asia pa sick foundation. John, thank you so much. One of the things that stands out here today is that no terror group has come forward to claim responsibility. Because of that, do you believe that terror is at fault here . This is going to be one of the key issues in this whole investigation. Just because no terrorist group has claimed has not claimed responsibility, that doesnt mean that there is no act of terrorism. We know that some terrorist groups prefer to lie low, keep the advantage to themselves, that if they accept responsibility, the focus will be on them, there will be more scrutiny. And also some terrorist groups may not want to reveal their hand too early in case they have more nefarious activities in mind. So it is something that we need to wait and see ultimately the forensic investigation will be a key decider. We may have terrorist groups claiming responsibility and they may prove to be false. So theres going to be a lot of speculation, im afraid. That will continue for some days. A lot of people are watching this and thinking, how safe is my travel this summer . What do you have to say to them . Keep in mind that countries like france have really elevated their own security personnel at airports and other logistical hubs. Theyve withdrawn the security credentials of people working air side at various airports in paris over the last year. We dont know that this is an act of terrorism as yet and thats very important to point out. But we also know that terrorists, if they cant achieve their primary goal, which is to maim and kill, it is to cause major disruptions where people are traveling. It is also designed to impact the way we feel and think about our safety and security. But we mustnt allow them to deter us because these are incidents that will keep pointing out again and again. We do not know that terrorism is the culprit here. There are a lot of things that obviously they are looking at. Im wondering when you hear what jim was just talking about, about whats happening at the airports, as you were just mentioning, and the transparency of egypt and its ability to lead this investigation, a former managing director at the ntsb says the egyptian authorities have the technical savvy and ability in convert with the french and uk to lead this investigation but transparency to him is an issue. What do you make of the fact that egypt officials came out very early on here saying that they do believe this to be terrorism. This is a very important question that you raise. Egyptians in the past have a very bad track record for their transparency. Goes all the way back to 1999 when egyptair 990 crash off nantucket island in the atlantic ocean. The egyptians worked very hard to prevent the full investigation from coming out. The fact that the pilot was suicidal and perhaps even more nefarious agenda in mind. Then with the Metrojet Airline bombing, the russian plane, seven months ago, the egyptians totally downplayed the role of terrorism until it was impossible to deny. The fact that theyve come out so quickly this time to suggest it could be terrorism, it might be, because this plane did not come from egypt. Came from france. Therefore, its almost like theyre palming the blame on to the french in case something bad had actually happened. So well have to wait and see. Egyptians dont have the best track record for transparency but hopefully in this investigation they might be more willing to provide more information as it comes through. I only have a second here, but because of what you just said, because it came from france, of course, it was still at the end of the day egyptair. And because of the track record of egyptian authorities and their transparency, or not in these cases, does that make them more vulnerable to terrorist attack . Certainly, we know that terrorist groups are trying to hit egypt politically, economically, socially, and by going after the aviation industry, that is the soft underbelly of egypts economy and it would hurt their Tourism Industry which is a real mess right now. Okay. We appreciate your insight. Still so many questions. The answers can be found in the flight data recorder, the digital voice recorder, those black boxes that are sitting at the bottom of the sea somewhere. Course, sharing condolences of the french government. We are monitoring this to determine if there is anything coming out of this. Lets listen for a couple of seconds here. As we said again this morning, im saying again as i said this morning to the families acting in transparency. And i commit myself to france paying account as things become known about the different procedures which are put at the service of truth. With this regard again id like to emphasize as i did yesterday and the day before that the informati information, sometimes contradictory information, and too often what appears to be definitive misinterpretations. And so i am very careful about this. Because this puts the families in a tense and painful situation. I want to express myself to you about this. The best response of this information, this partial information, this piecemeal information is that it takes place in the best all right, so that again is the French Foreign minister who just spoke with the families of some of the passengers onboard egyptair 804. There were, again, 15 french citizens on board that plane. We know that representatives from egyptair and the egyptian ambassador to france were in on that meeting this morning. So were going to monitor this News Conference from the French Foreign minister and bring you any highlights that come out of that. Now back to the search for clues and answers in this mysterious crash. It is now going on underwater. Recovery teams from several countries including our own u. S. Navy are making several discoveries by the hour including reports of an oil slick in the area where flight 804 is believed to have disappeared. Allison chinchar is here to walk us through what investigators face. Beneath me is the exact spot where we believe most of the debris would end up being. This red line being the last known flight path that it took. Now going in to today we do expect an increase in stormy weather. This is a look at the last 24 hours. Again you can kind of see a lot of these clouds beginning to roll in. That will hinder a lot of the respect rescue efforts but were now concerned about the stuff below because those stormy skies above also have an impact below. Number one, most important, being the choppy seas. That storm will really start to make that sea incredibly choppy, which makes it very difficult for them to not only retrieve debris but also searching for the black box which will likely be under water. The average depth at this point is about 8,000 to 11,000 feet deep. Again, it varies a little bit but overall, relatively flat space. That plays in their favor because it makes it a little bit easier to find the pinger. The thing is, the pinger will work at depths up to around 20,000 feet. But, as those seas get a little choppier throughout the day, if can distort some of the sounds that you hear. We have not only stormy conditions coming in, but we also expect rainy conditions. Very stormy. Wind is going to pick up incredibly as we go through the day as well. So again, those are going to be the concerns Going Forward and it is not just one, it is numerous weather concerns that theyll have to deal with. Allison chinchar, thank you so much for the update. She says trump is an extraordinary salesman who makes promises he wont keep. She has a prediction though about the general election result. Heres what she said. Whatever hes saying, you can bet your life on the fact he will probably not come through. And thats a tremendous characteristic that is sorely needed in the president. That is mind boggling. I dont believe you could really listen to anything he says and really believe that he will actually do it. So whats the bottom line . Who do you actually think will win . Oh, who will win . Donald trump will win. Donald trump. Not a doubt in my mind. Well, trump picks up what he says was an unexpected endorsement from the nra. That happened last evening. He also promised the crowd that he would lead the fight to defend the Second Amendment. Watch. The Second Amendment is under a threat like never before. Crooked Hillary Clinton is the most antigun, antiSecond Amendment candidate ever to run for office, and as i said before, she wants to abolish the Second Amendment. See wants to take your guns away. She wants to abolish. Just remember. Erroll louis joins us now, political anchor for Time Warner Cable news. Good morning, victor. You heard there donald trump repeat the claim that Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the Second Amendment. We know that is not true. But we also know it worked inside the room. Does it work . Is it as potent outside of that room . Well, youre exactly right, victor. He was donald trump was using the rhetoric that comes from the nra leadership. They just kind of cut to the chase and say, anybody whos in favor of sensible gun control wants to take your guns away be, wants to abolish the Second Amendment. Of give it a moments thought and you realize thats just not possible Given Supreme Court rulings and given what it takes to actually amend or change the constitution. Outside the room . Hard to say where it will work. I tend to think just looking at the political map that this is donald trump trying to appeal to some voters and make sure that he can energize and motivate some already conservative voters in states like ohio, pennsylvania, swing states that hes going to need to carry in november if he wants to win. Lets stay in that region. First, Hillary Clinton of course has never said she wanted to ban the Second Amendment. She did disagree with the Supreme Court on have the recording of it at a private fundraiser. Lets play it and talk about that afterward. Here again, the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment and i am going to make that case every chance i get. Immediately after trumps nra speech she tweeted this. Youre wrong, donald trump. We can uphold Second Amendment rights while preventing senseless gun violence. Heres the question does Hillary Clinton want to have this fight in pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, in this area where she has a bit of a weakness and it looks like donald trump has some unexpected strength . My guess is that shes going to need to have that fight and that shes going to welcome that fight, frankly, because this is a race that is shaping up to be polarized and polarizing. What that means is you try and get your base out because youre on some level giving up on pulling voters away from the other guy. In this case somebody who is a solid trump voter. It is not clear what Hillary Clinton would have to do to get nra member who was a trump supporter to come over to her side. Her strategy would then logically have to be to get as many, say, mothers out there, as many people concerned about gun violence out there as possible. They tend to cluster around the cities. Shes going to try and get her base out there. Shes going to have to live up to the pledge that she just played, that shes going to contest the Supreme Courts ruling. That doesnt mean shes going to ignore or try to overturn the Second Amendment. But it does mean shes going to make the case that what the amendment does allow, by the way, is local levels of gun control. Shes going to make the case that those are needed. You mention that Hillary Clinton, as you say, will have to speak and be with groups of mothers who are fighting for gun control. Shes expected to speak or scheduled to speak at a dinner organized by the Trayvon Martin foundation tonight. Erroll louis, well continue this conversation. Parts possibly of the plane. This is our first look at debris from egyptair flight 804. This has been pulled from the Mediterranean Sea. Mangled pieces of the plane. You life jacket you saw. We want to go straight to International Diplomatic editor Nic Robertson live at a military airbase in greece. Obviously these are things investigators have gotten their hands on. Nic, you made a very good point to us during the break. And again, this is something that were just putting together, we do not know for certain. But the fact that that life vest was unpacked, that it was open out of its wrapper, that may that may possibly indicate something, yes . Reporter its possible. Its just too soon to say. Some of the things we can say here, these pieces of debris are very small and that tells us how hard the search is. We know that the search radius is over is about 40 miles radius which gives you an area of about 5,000 square miles out at sea to search so we can get a sense of how tough it is. But when you look at these pieces of debris, there are possibly things that you can infer that these will be early indicators. It is not clear if any of this can be conclusive. But it would give an indication potentially if the life vest is opened, out, as we see it there. That it is no longer wrapped and put away as it would have been under a seat on the aircraft. Potentially the passengers were told to prepare to put on their life vests, that there potentially were moments of time during this catastrophic event. We know none of this is conclusive. It is possible that life vests could have been deployed on the plane, passengers could have been told. Its too soon to say. What we can say with certainly right now, the conditions have changed substantially for search and recovery today. It is much windier. The sea is really choppy. The greek c130 behind me, theyve got two of those. They are on standby today. There is a u. S. Air force orye onp3 aircraft in the skies but it is going to be much harder to spot debris particularly of the size we are seeing in those pictures in these much rougher conditions today. Of course there is still a lot of searching to be done. Very good to know, nic roberts robertson. Thank you so much. As the physical investigation in the search for clues and parts of this plane continues, there is of course the intelligence investigation. Officials in europe are racing to determine what happened on board flight 804. Travelers in the u. S. Are wondering just how safe they are in the countrys airports. Were joined now to discuss that by james woolsey, former director of the cia and a National Security expert. Mr. Woolsey, good morning to you. Good to be with you. I wonder if you saw those photographs and pairing that with the new information were hearing about the acar system and alerts of smoke in the cabin. If have you adjusted your hypothesis at all this is possibly terror, possibly an inside job . I think it is still quite possible that someone inside the system, someone who had access to hangars, access to maintenance, either in egypt or in france, or in any of the other places that it stopped, the aircraft stopped. Could have placed something small and some of these bombs can be as small as a coke can. In the aircraft. It may be just a mechanical failure, in which case i said early on i thought about 80 20 it was likely to be terrorism. So that would be the 20 . On the other hand, what weve seen is not necessarily inconsistent with it being an intentional interference and a terrorist act of some kind. Does the time period, going on into several days now, without a claim of responsibility, does that impact your belief that this could likely be the result of terror . Id say it is a slight down tick that might suggest its not a terrorist group. Sometimes they jump in promptly and take credit, sometimes they wait a while. Its not a rigid rule. There were dozens of airport workers in paris there who were dismissed after the discovery that they possibly were radicalized, or in some part of that scale or spectrum. What would it take to indefinitely vet and monitor all the people who have access to an airplane, and is there any appetite for that type of endeavor in the u. S. . Two take a lot of work but i think it is probably worth the work. Because if you run the recruiting in such a way as the big Company European company does that supplies a lot of the workers on some contracts for cleaning and so forth in american airports, the same way that theyve been running the labor situation in brussels and elsewhere. You end up with a large number of people from the middle east, some of whom many of whom, im sure, are just regular folks who want a job. But when you see, as has been the case in one case in the u. S. , scrawled jihadi graffiti on the inside of a hangar. When you have the events such as occurred in minneapolis a couple of years ago involving a jihadi who worked in government buildings. You have to Pay Attention to that even if you dont want to. Even if it is hard. The question has always been of resources, not intent or desire. Let me ask you very quickly because i know i am running out of time. Would you fly your family to and from Charles De Gaulle . I think id think twice about it. But and especially during the forthcoming soccer championships. I think id be worried about it. I might still decide to do it. I just got back from flying to europe not long ago. But its something that people should start thinking about. All right, former cia director there, i think making news that you would think twice about flying your family to and fra charl from Charles De Gaulle. The first images of debris collected from the mediterranean after the crash of egyptair flight 804. You saw there a life vest in one of those shots. Some of this this is not clear what it is, but this fabric matches the upholstery inside this fuselage. Of course the fuselage still has not yet been found but, again, the first images of the debris found after the crash of egyptair flight 804. We will continue to bring you more images as we receive them and speak with our experts and analysts about what they can conclude from these photographs. As we continue to follow that story, lets go to the political arena together here. Senator Bernie Sanders is racing against the clock to pull off an upset against democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The vermont senator is crisscrossing new mexico and california today ahead of the june 7th primary and vowing to keep fighting until that National Convention in july. Its his rhetoric on the campaign trail though that really amplifies or highlights the party is deeply divided here. Sanders is blasting Democratic Leaders accusing them of rigging the contest in favor of Hillary Clinton. But it is a bad not only a bad idea from a democratic perspective, the idea that a party would, in a significant way, determine who the candidate is before people got involved in the political process. Hillary clinton is not the democratic candidate most likely to defeat donald trump. So lets put this in perspective and get you numbers here. As it stands now, sanders lags behind clinton by more than 700 total delegates. That number does include superdelegates who have not yet voted. Secretary clinton is just 90 delegates from winning the nomination before the democratic flas National Convention. Maria cardona and jonathan tussini. Thank you both for being with us. We appreciate it. Jonathan, i want to start with you, if i could. I know that you have a problem with the delegate count but the fact is, the rules are the rules the way they are. So mathematically, why does he stay in this race . Well, first of all, yes, the rules are rules but respectfully, you have it wrong. Youre right about the pledged delegate difference is about 280 or 285 delegates. It is not true, respectfully, that Hillary Clinton will clinch the nomination as 90 delegates to go. That will not happen until the superdelegates vote at the convention. I just debated governor ed rendell this past couple of days ago on npr and he agreed with me that we will not know who wins the nomination until the convention because nobody will have enough pledged delegates prior to the convention. So let me go to your question. Look. Bernie has acknowledged and i think everybody that supports bernie acknowledges that it is a steep hill. We have to win on the pledged delegate side probably about twothirds of the delegates in california, new jersey, new mexico, the last place that votes is on the 14th of june, district of columbia. Then we have to make the argument to the superdelegates that bernie is the best candidate to face donald trump which all the polls show he is a stronger candidate to donald trump. Well see where that falls out. Maria, to you with that. Listen to what donald trump or to what Bernie Sanders said about that very issue about the numbers showing that he would beat donald trump as opposed to Hillary Clinton. He says not being able to do so and he says it is because of these superdelegates. As all of you know, superdelegates receive those designations because theyre elected officials, theyre in the congress, theyre governors, whatever they may be. But they dont get those votes by having or seeing people elect them, or not getting those votes in response to popular elections. So first of all, maria, is there a threat or a risk that because of these latest polls i want to put one up here. Cbs New York Times poll of registered voters showing sanders 51 trump 38 if there was a general election held right now. Is there a chance as superdelegates watch these numbers come in that they may switch their votes and their allegiance to Hillary Clinton . I highly doubt it, for a couple of reasons. The first one is, anybody worth their salt in politics knows that polls six months out of the general election mean nothing. Lets just ask president mitt romney if those polls actually mean what they said six months prior to the election. In all honesty, people tout polls. Every candidate out there if the poll is in their favor, they tout them. Of course they do. Of course they do. But this far out they mean nothing, period. Thats just what weve seen. This far out of the election in 2012, mitt romney was beating obama by several points and look what happened. Anything can happen in an election. Number one. Number two, the reason why i believe that senator sanders numbers are so strong, not to take away anything from his campaign, hes run a terrific campaign. I have always said it. Its been great for the party, its been great for the debate, its been great for the country. He has not been tested against the republican attack machine. He has never been the focus of extended and continued eviscerating attacks by republicans. Hillary clinton has been that target for 30 years. And she is still standing. And thats why i think you see a lot of people saying that she actually is the strongest candidate to go against trump. Let me just say let me just Say Something about superdelegates. Hang on, jonathan. You had your chance. Superdelegates have never overturned the will of the people. And theyre not going to do so now. When you get to the convention, the person that has the most pledged delegates okay . Not counting the unpledged delegates or superdelegates. The person who has the most pledged delegates is the one whos going to get the nomination. Period. Okay. Jonath jonathan, go ahead. Couple quick points. The first thing is that we have very little experience to go on on superdelegates. Maybe a few times when superdelegates have been in place. So its not true that i mean it is hard to say theyve been in place since 1984. Yes, but in most in a number of cases, there were incumbents running. And in a number of cases, when the actual candidates like Walter Mondale had already clinched the nomination based on pledged delegates. The point now to the poll is, were in a very, very different situation in this country. We have the potential that someone like donald trump could be in the white house and essentially destroy the fabric of our country. I think the poll you showed i agree is very, very indicative. The number you didnt show not a criticism, heres the fundamental thing. Hillary clintons high negatives compared to bernies authenticity and his positive ratings, thats very important when you have to confront attacks. We havent seen necessarily i havent seen the numbers for bernies positives. We have seen the negatives. Not just for Hillary Clinton but also for donald trump. Maria, i think everybody can agree with you that really both of you, saying anything can happen at this point. We appreciate your voices in this. Thank you. Reporter well, from racist Text Messages to questionable officerinvolved shootings, the San FranciscoPolice Department has been embroiled in controversy and now under enormous pressure. The chief of the department has stepped down. He resigned at the request of the citys mayor, ed lee. It comes after a 27yearold africanamerican woman was shot and kill thursday by a San FranciscoPolice Sergeant in what was described as a stolen vehicle. Now there was no indication that the woman was armed or posed a deadly threat to officers and it marked the third time that a suspect had been shot and kill by San Francisco officers in just the past six months. One of those shootings involved mario woods. Woods was armed with a knife but critics say he was just too far away from officers to pose a deadly threat. Our first look at some of the debris recovered from the crash of egyptair flight 804. The priority right now, finding the main wreckage so investigators can get crucial details from the black box. She wants to abolish the Second Amendment. She wants to take your guns away. Good morning. So grateful to have your company, as always. Good morning to you. Breaking news right at the top. We are seeing first pictures of the debris collected after the crash of egyptair flight 804. These images just released by Egyptian Armed forces. They appear to show here mangled pieces of metal of the plane. You see egyptair there on that hshaped one there. We see here at this point unidentifiable. This looks to be upholstery from inside the cabin, inside the fuselage, though the fuselage has not been recovered. Also a photograph of a life vest here. If you look up near the accreditation here, of the Egyptian Armed forces, you see on the tab eligyptegyptair. So the name of the airline on this life vest. Meanwhile french officials have confirmed smoke alerts went off just moments before the plane plunged into the water with 66 people on board. French officials confirming that just a couple of hours ago. U. S. And egyptian officials suspect this was a terrorist attack but so far no claim of responsibility. Our International Diplomatic editor Nic Robertson is at an airbase in greece. Correspondent Jim Bittermann is in france at Charles De Gaulle airport. Cnns ian lee is live at Cairo International airport. Nic robertson in greece, have investigators pieced together anything more by analyzing what were seeing in these photographs, nic . Reporter not that theyre saying publicly at the moment, victor. Key things would be obviously the voice recorder, the data recorder from the aircraft, or a piece of fuselage that would show some signs of what may have caused the plane to come down, like a blast, difficulties ] well try to get nic on the phone. Were having some technical issue there. Well get back to nic in a moment. Lets go to cnns ian lee live for us in cairo. Ian, what do we know this morning about the smoke alerts that went off moments before the plane vanished . Reporter well, this information came out initially yesterday about this acars system which monitors systems on the plane, relays that down to the ground. It indicated that there was smoke in several parts of the plane closer to the cockpit. Now today we are hearing it from french officials as well verifying that that smoke was present in the final moments of that airplanes flight. Now we dont know exactly what that means, if there was a big fire. Were really this is still very preliminary. We are looking into that. Were also hearing from egyptian officials about the current ongoing search. We just talk to the military and the ministry of Civil Aviation. They say that their main focus right now is finding the fuselage, as well as finding those black boxes. They still have not found them and they told us that once theyre able to, theyll have a better idea of what took place, and especially to help to help verify the smoke what could have caused it, what were the pilots saying, these are all very crucial pieces of evidence. Also, we are seeing that new wreckage, getting clues from that as well but it is still very much early on analyzing that. Meanwhile we do have family members who are waiting. Just like us, they want to know the latest information. There has been some frustration about the quickness of getting that information to them. But of course, this is still very early on in the investigation. But talking to some of the family members, they say right now their priority is to get their bodies back so that they can give their loved ones a proper burial. Remember, 66 people died in this crash. Thoughts and prayers going out to those family members. Without those answers, it is so hard to reconcile anything. Ian lee, appreciate it. Thank you. Back now to Nic Robertson in greece. I think we have him on the phone here. We were discussing the search for those black boxes. Preliminary analysis of the photos we are seeing. Nic . Well, the there are several things we can say. One is that the debris thats been recovered is small. I can tell you the weather conditions out here in the mediterranean are much worse today than they were yesterday. The seas are very choppy. Swells with being white caps, strong, strong wind, which means trying to spot from the air or even from the sea small amounts of debris in the sea is going to be much tougher. That means it is going to be harder to spot and locate what could be the what could be the actual site of the impact, and therefore help lead investigators to the black boxes. I think there is another piece of information we can perhaps at least discuss. We dont know for sure. Life vest that we saw in the photograph from the Egyptian Military, that is not in its wrapper. This is an indication that in those three minutes of the acars warning, the Smoke Detector and other warnings it those three minutes, that those alarms were going off on board the aircraft. Were the crew able to tell the passengers get out your life vests, put on your life vests. We dont know this but these are all be vital pieces of information for investigators and what will be very important, never mind the size of the debris, is can they take some technical swabs to look for explosives, traces of explosives, anything even in those small pieces of debris that could be an early indication that there was some kind of explosion on board the aircraft or what type of smoke even these alarms and detectors were seeing on the aircraft, victor. Nic robertson, we appreciate the latest from there. Thank you. Of course, the question that families in paris and in cairo and in cities around the world are waiting to get an answer to, was this a mechanical failure or something more sinister. Investigators are just beginning to piece together what may have happened based on what theyre seeing. You are looking here at looks like some of the upholstery from one of the chairs in that plane and on this particular picture that life vest, you can see the lefthand side, that tab at the top, does read egyptair. Weve highlighted it there for you. We have a few theories officials are trying to decipher. Tim, first of all, i would have to think that a smuggled bomb is one of the first and foremost theories here. Would that be the case . It is certainly one theory, yes. The French Foreign minister has just said, were exploring all theories but none should be favored at this point. I think that really is critical. Normally investigators look broadly at four different areas. Was it the weather, was it pilot error, was it some sort of technical malfunction or some act of sabotage. Conditions at the time were fine, there was no suggestion that the pilots had rerouted for any reason. That leaves you still with a myriad of different possible explanations for the crash of egyptair 804. Certainly terror is among those possibilities, but so is some sort of merle or technical catastrophe, particularly now with the release of that acars information about smoke at the front of the airplane. Right. Right. And it is interesting to note that these reports, as miles obrien pointed out yesterday, included antiice issues with pilots and windows that are heated where they saw some smoke then in the lavatory and smoke in the avionics bay which is beneath the cockpit and inaccessible during the flight. So if you go with the theory first that perhaps there was a smuggled bomb, do investigators first and foremost then look obviously at where it came from and how it got on that plane . Clearly, thats extremely important. But they will also be painstaking trying to put the wreckage back together again once they find it so determine if there was a device, what it was. Normally the skin of the plane would be blown apart by a bomb. Remember with the malaysian flight that crashed over the ukraine they put that back together and could eventually work out what impact came from a missile at the front of the plane that caused its demise. Putting the physical wreckage back together again is extremely important but also going beyond that, one of the other questions, how was a bomb smuggled aboard. All the systems you have on the ground and elsewhere are only as good as people operating them. Thats one of the potential weaknesses in Civil Aviation worldwide. If it was not terror and we look at where investigators focus at that point then, i would think would the main question be was there a fault in the Maintenance System of this plane. They will be looking at absolutely everything. Was it a peculiar combination of events on this plane . Theyll need so much more information from the flight data recorder, from the voice recorder in the cockpit to see if there is any information in there which of course records not Just Communications with air Traffic Control but Communications Inside the cockpit between the pilots. They need the physical evidence. They need those boxes. They need parts of the plane to begin to put together some sort of picture. Theyll also be looking at maintenance records, clearly. Theyll be being looking again at some of this automated messaging that came from the plane. Theres probably a lot more of it. In any situation like this a Little Information is a very dangerous thing. Such a long way to go before they can unravel the complexities of what might have happened onboard this plane. What kind of Surveillance Video is there in these certain areas of the airport that might indicate what could have happened . Well, here at Charles De Gaulle, for example, there are 900 cameras trained on sensitive parts of the airport. Huge number. They have started to go through what was recorded that night but there are other things theyre doing as well like interviewing anybody from baggage handlers through caterers, through people on the ramp that night to see if they spotted something suspicious or if there was something amiss. Theyll be taking all of those precautions. But until that point we reach some sort of conclusion, we dont really know if it was anything to do that happened on the ground here. It appears at the moment that that flight left paris in fine shape. Right. Tim lister, thank you so much. Appreciate it. If this was the result of a terror attack, why have we not heard a claim of responsibility from a group like isis or al qaeda . The man who literally wrote the book on isis, our terror expert weighs in this just a moment. In you this morning, the first pictures of debris from egyptair flight 804. Egyptian Officials Say they suspect terrorism was what brought down the plane but no group has yet claimed responsibility. Lets bring in cnn contributor michael weis. Hes also the author of isis, inside the army of terror. Michael, good morning. Good morning. As the days go on now and there is no claim of responsibility, does this make you think more or less likely that it is more or less likely that this is an act of terror . It is bizarre with respect to isis. It is true in the past al qaeda for instance sometimes takes weeks or even months to come and claim responsibility for a terrorist operation but isis has been sort of quick out of the gate. It took them about four hours after the metrojet bombing to say, yeah, we did it. Because of a translation error there was confusion as to the how. There was speculation it might have been a surfacetoair missile. We now know it was an ied or explosive device built into a soda can embedded in the fuel lining of that plane. That does not mean, however, that this is not an act of terrorism. I just read an article in tth Daily Telegraph in the uk, an avionics specialist thinks this was a bomb because of the socalled cascading series of failures that occurred within a very sensitive part of this aircraft. The nerve center, the intelligence main tram of the aircraft which essentially just shut down all the computer systems. If thats the case, putting a bomb in that part of the plane would mean that you would have to have access to the innards of this machine. And that would suggest that somebody in either Charles De Gaulle or one of the other airports that the plane had landed in the past 24 hours, lets say, was working for a terrorist organization. So had infiltrated the security and Aviation Industries of some country, most likely france, because the plane does get swept every time it lands. We dont know. It is a little too soon. I would also say the following. Isis is i dont like to use the word involving with respect to a terrorist organization but it is changing. One of the ways in which it is changing is it is becoming europeanized. The new head of its foreign intelligence xwidivision or arm a french national. Apparently he had a direct hand in planning the paris attacks. He actually presented the plan to beingaghdadi and was promote what is in effect the cia of isis. Ive seen news today al baghdadi is set to release an audio statement soon. We dont know what that could contain. Could have to do with the war on the ground in syria, or it could have something to do with this. We will see. You and i have discussed on this show the continued oneupmanship between isis and al qaeda in this superior or the of global jee lihajihad. Why would it benefit any group to successful carry out a terror attack and not immediately claim responsibility for it . Does this then point to possibly a lone wolf . It could. Or the other option or alternative would be, look, isis is foreign operations. They operate semiautonomously. Well give you cash, well recruit the people that we will send abroad or well put you in touch with a network of fixers and logistics, sort of contact points. But we dont want to know too much, we dont want to know details of what you are doing because the more you talk to us through the telephone or internet the greater the likelihood ss going to be intercepted by western or regional intelligence, signals intelligence is really only thing that the United States has to go on with respect to understanding what isis is up to. It could always be the case that a cell or a group of agents in europe or in the region perpetrated an attack, and isis is just actually being careful and waiting to find out if this in fact was one of their guys. Because one thing you dont want to do theyve done it before is claim credit for something you havent done because then you look like fools. Michael weiss, thank you. We are still waiting for more details after the discovery of these photographs of the debris thats been pulled from the mediterranean. Well continue our coverage throughout the morning. Michael, thanks so much. Sure. Thank you. Meanwhile, france is wrapping up its Airport Security in the wake of the egyptair crash. We now have video in, the first video of debris collected in the search for egyptair flight 804. You see here pieces of foam, what appear to be from a seat on board that plane. Some of this we saw in the fill photographs but there are some personal effects that are captured in this video that was not captured in the initial photographs that were released about 30 minutes ago. There is a purse right there. There are some shoes, as you can see there to the right. And you can see visibly on some of these items that are from the plane the words egyptair. But again, these are just some of the small items that have been collected from the Mediterranean Sea. Looks like thats a piece of shredded carpet from the plane. Then of course, that life vest. One of the things interesting about the vest that Nic Robertson pointed out he is in greece right now that the life vest was found unpackaged but makes you wonder we do not have any confirmation but with the threeminute span based on the acars reports they may have been told to put their life vests on so they may have been opened but we do not have confirmation of that. Just speculation at this point. Just a few, few pieces of the debris, the wreckage. The search continues for those black boxes and the fuselage. But now cnns Senior InternationalJim Bittermann is at pariss Charles De Gaulle airport where security before this crash, jim, was already very high. And now there are new initiatives that are being put into place. Reporter absolutely. They Just Announced yesterday that theyre going to add another 30 Intelligence Officers to the Security Force here at the airport, plus the fact that they are going back over the cctv footage of the people who were involved in handling the egy egyptaircraft and also personnel, did anyone do anything looking suspicious during the moments that it was on the ground here. Plane was on the ground for just over an hour here. But if anything had happened here. There is no reason at this point to say that terrorism is favored by the french authorities in terms of what they suspect brought the plane down. But they are doing this basically because they want to make sure that theyre part their part of the equation has been cleaned as much as possible, examined as much as possible to see if theres any possible suspicion here. It is the kind of thing that started almost within hours after the announcement that a plane had crashed. Even before it is known what brought down egyptair 804, security questions have been raised about its last point of departure, paris busy Charles De Gaulle airport. The plane was on the ground here just over an hour, but in that time could someone have placed a bomb aboard in perhaps hidden in baggage or a food service cart . Or could have terrorist have managed to board with other passengers . Questions that have been raised, in part because of last years bloody terrorist attacks in france. In their aftermath, interior Ministry Officials revealed that 85 security badges which are needed to access secure areas of the airport were revoked last year because the badge holders allegedly showed signs of radicalizati radicalization. Whats more, after the attacks, airport authorities carried out a new security sweep of employees, again looking for anyone who might pose a threat. But 86,000 people work at the airport, and screening for signs of radicalism is a daunting task. Nonetheless, in the wake of the eghipt air crash, without knowing the cause, officials ordered a thorough investigation of anyone who might have come in contact with the plane and a review of video footage which might reveal untoward activity. This is not only a necessity but a principle of cautionary measures. There is not a judgment. There was a failure but it is a way to continue as we always have done to make sure our citizens are safe. Reporter in fact, french officials from the president on down have been trying to reassure everyone in the traveling public that security is their highest concern. Since the egyptair crash its been announced that 30 new intelligence fsofficers will be added to personnel already working at the airport. The French Foreign minister has also said there is no such thing as zero risk. The egyptair crash has put spotlight on security here at a very awkward time. In the next two months the country will host the french open tennis tournament, the european soccer championships and the Tour De France bicycle race. Events which will attract millions of people. Many of whom will travel through the same airport as the egypt airplane did. If there is no cause skaebd for its crash, which dispels doutsz about security, the impact on those events could be devastating. The other bit of reassurance thats going on here is to the families of the victims about 70 of them were welcomed at the Foreign Ministry today. They let them know what the latest is on the investigation, along with the prosecutors office. Thanks so much, Jim Bittermann at Charles De Gaulle. Donald trump winning over the crowd at the National Rifle association convention, slamming Hillary Clinton even saying something about his own sons that is turning a few heads this morning. Vet recommended flea and tick killer. 37 minutes past the hour right now. So grateful to have you with us here. 6 million. Thats how much donald trump has claimed that he raised for veterans groups back in january. The campaign is backing away from that number now calling it inaccurate. Washington put the amount raised closer to 4. 5 million. Trumps team tells cnn the shortfall emerged when people pledged donations but they never paid up. A cnn investigation from march found only 2. 9 million had been disbursed to groups thus far. Trump campaign has declined to release all of the groups who made donations. Take a listen to mr. Trump on msnbc earlier this week. Libya is a disaster. We knock out libya and you knock out gadhafi and he thinks we did a great job and it is just more destabilization. And isis has the oil. Would you have stayed out of libya . I would have stayed out of libya, yeah. So he said there he would have stayed out of libya. This is what trump said back in 2002. I cant believe what our country is doing. Gadhafi in libya is killing thousands of people. Nobody knows how bad it is. And were sitting around, we have soldiers all over the middle east and were not bringing him in to stop this horrible carnage. We should go in, we should stop this guy which would be very easy and very quick. We could do it surgically. Stop him from doing it and save these lives. So thats libya. Lets now go to the decision to invade iraq. This is trump from the cnn debate in simi valley last year. I am the only person that fought very, very hard against us. And i want a sitting politician. Going into iraq. Now listen to donald trump back in 2002 speaking with howard stern. Are you for invade something iraq . Yeah, i guess so. You know, i wish it was i wish the first time it was done correctly. Now lets go to obamacare. He told our Anderson Cooper at a town hall on february 18th that he liked the mandate and then eight days later at a Republican Debate said, i dont like mandates. Lets talk about this. Joined now by trump supporter and cnn political commentator jeffrey lord, along with host of the ben ferguson show, ben ferguson. Jeffrey, start with the description from the Washington Post on trumps policies. Put it up on the screen. Trump doesnt so much seem to have firm positions as he has words that have come out of his mouth more recently than other words. As he moves to the general election and during the primary he famously said i could go out on 5th avenue and shoot someone and i wouldnt lose supporters. Do you foresee that he will have challenges as these are played backtoback in what will be ads . What will be interviews for the next six months . You know, victor, in listening to what you were saying there, some of these positions, changes were 14 years ago. I mean in 14 years, Ronald Reagan went from being a lib democrat to a conservative candidate for governor of california. People change over time, there is no question about that. Hillary clinton has changed. I remember that bill clinton and al gore once upon a time when they were running for elections in arkansas and tennessee were prolife. Then suddenly they got the glimmer of a National Career ahead of them and they changed. This is what goes on in politics and i certainly dont think that something that somebody believed 14 years earlier should be used as a standard today. Ben, what do you say about the inconsistencies . Though the last one on obamacare is eight days apart. Ben, to you about these inconsistents. Will donald trump be able to brush these off as he has in the primaries . During the primary i was very critical of donald trump, brought up a lot of these inconsistencies of things hes said in the past compared to the present day. It was very clear the voters were more than happy to give or overlook these because what they are getting now is authentic. When it comes to libya, for example, he will explain it as, hey, ive learned from mistakes others have made. The world is a different place, things are different. When you talk about inconsistencies that are eight days apart, those are the ones that can trip you up in a general election. Because if people feel like youre pandering to them based on what you think they want to hear at that exact moment, that can be exploited. So i do think that donald trump is going to have to get tighter with remembering what he said eight days ago. As for the longterm differences, i dont think those are going to matter at all. My Foreign Policy has changed from 2004 to 2014 to 2016. The way i look at the war in iraq and afghanistan is different than it was when we were going to that war. Very conservatives, their foreign policies have changed as well when it comes to how you deal with terrorists and state sponsors of terrorism and do you invade countries instead of maybe pushing people back into their country if they invade others. Those i think are going to be forgiven easily. Lets talk about the nra and his speech yesterday in louisville and what he said about guns and Hillary Clinton. Watch this. The Second Amendment is under a threat like never before. Crook Hillary Clinton is the most antigun, antiSecond Amendment candidate ever to run for office, and as i said before, she wants to abolish the Second Amendment. She wants to take your guns away. She wants to abillish. Just remember that. Ben, i want to stick with you. Does this work outside of the room as well as it appeared to work inside the room . With people that know the history of Hillary Clinton and gun control, absolutely. Bill clinton and Hillary Clinton have been two of the biggest advocates for taking away peoples rights when it comes to firearms. This is going to be an issue that donald trump is going to be able to really connect with people that do not trust her. She doesnt have a knowledge of weapons either. Shes one ever these classic liberals who says this gun looks scary so lets ban it regardless of what caliber the weapon is, what the gun actually does, how many bullets are in the magazine. These are different issues that she has been able to basically just walk out on stage an go these guns are bad, support me, im for gun control. And donald trump got a lot of support yesterday and is going to get support on this Second Amendment issue because Hillary Clinton has made it clear, she wants to limit in an extreme way the guns that americans are allowed to own. Jeffrey, to you on what appeared to be just a contradiction in the room. Donald trump called for potentially the clintons to disarm their secret service agents, get rid of, as he called them, the body guards guns. But secret Service Reportedly did not allow the attendees of his address to bring their guns in to the room. He wants to get rid of gunfree zones. However, some of his properties had gunfree zones. Will he face some challenges based on the inconsistencies of his rhetoric and the distinction he makes for his own properties . I think it is pretty clear matter of fact, he has a permit to carry himself. This does have real consequences. Im talk you to you here from pennsylvania. People tend to think of pennsylvania in the electoral sense in terms of the economy and things like that. There is a very, very significant progun vote here in penn. Candidates have lost elections in Pennsylvania State wide if they are perceived as being antigun. So this is something that in the battle for pennsylvania which is now going to be a key battleground state, this is something that could really do some damage to Hillary Clinton. All right, jeffrey lord, ben ferguson, good to have both of you. Turning to ot democratic side of things, senator Bernie Sanders is calling on Top Democrats and blasting them for rigging the contest against him, he says. The vermont senator is crisscrossing new mexico and california today ahead of the june 7th primary and vowing to keep fighting until the National Convention in july. But it is his rhetoric on the campaign trail that is suggesting this party is so deeply divided. Sanders says it is clear Party Insiders are pushing for clinton. But it is not only a bad idea from a democratic perspective, the idea that a party would in a significant way determine hot candidate is before people got involved in the political process. Hillary clinton is not the democratic candidate most likely to defeat donald trump. Lets put it in perspective what we know. As it stands now, sanders lags behind clinton by more than 700 total delegates. That number does include superdelegates who have not yet voted, we should point out. Hillary clinton is just 90 delegates from winning the nomination before the july National Convention. It is still too early to determine if a bomb brought down 804, but the wreckage will be key to finding the cause. Some of the video is new this morning. Some of the debris that has been collected from that search in the Mediterranean Sea and as the investigation unfolds there are specific signs that investigators will be looking for. Reporter its in the wreckage that investigators will inspect for evidence of a possible explosive device. If we compare the sides, theres a difference. If youre pro life and you want to try and get rid of abortion, you go to washington, d. C. Thank you so much for keeping with us today. Were getting a first look at depl depl depl depl depl depl deplea debris. Meanwhile french officials have confirmed that smoke alerts did indeed go off just moments before the plane plunged into the water. U. S. And egyptian officials meanwhile suspect that it was the result of a terrorist attack, but so far theres no claim of responsibility. We know today u. S. Navy planes help comb an area for more of that debris. The latest on the search efforts and the clues that we can find from what can be december covered thus far. The conditions though, much harder in the search and recovery. It is much windier today. It will be very hard to see the debris on the surface. We know from the images and the pictures that the pieces that have been recovered are relatively small. In the type of seas that there are out in the mediterranean today. But when you look at these pieces of debris there are possibly things that you can infer. These will be early indicators and its not clear that this can be conclusive, but if the life vest is open, out as we see it there, the most important thing to find the voice and flight data recorders, that means pinpointing where the aircraft went down and as you try to gather all the pieces in that debris field in these windy conditions today, rough seas, that is going to be a tough job. All right. We do have some new pictures, we understand. We have some new pictures coming in in just a moment, but what we see here we showed you just a bit at the top here of the video thats come in from Egyptian Armed forces of the pieces of debris. Just a few pieces here from that egypt air flight 804. And take note that some of the pieces of debris we do clearly see the words egypt air. Yes, printed own that life vest you see here. It is unpacked, and well our experts analyze it. That means anything substantive as this Investigation Continues. All right. Investigators meanwhile hope that finding the plane debris is going to lead them more quickly to the wreckage in its entirety. Lets talk about this. Get a sense of what is to come. David is an expert on underwater search and exploration. So david, thank you for being back with us here. It took nearly two year to find the other black boxes, do you believe that there is a very good sense of where this plane is and because of the weather theyre dealing with today, theyre talking about wind and very choppy water, isnt it true that with weather like that it actually sadly expands the search territory day by day . It does a couple of things. It changes the current and the way things are going to be drifting on the surface. So any models that you want to backtrack are going to have to include that in the model so it makes that a bit more tough, but the goal is, in fact, to one, you know, the humanitarian task, the human remains recovering those and the evidence to try to point to where the plane impacted the water and that turns it over to the underwater search which is a whole other effort. There are these small pieces of debris that well get a look at today. How likely is it, do you think, that this plane is intact in terms of the nose, the wings, the tail, the body of the plane . Well, more likely than not, there are bigger pieces of the aircraft. These are similar to the pieces that were recovered from air france 447 in 2009 and there were some larger pieces of fuselage that were sitting on the bottomnd im thinking that one of those on the bottom of the sea will contain the black box, so i dont think the entire plane is in such small pieces but finding the big pieces is going to require quite an underwater effort. Thank you. We appreciate your expertise on this. And were live in cairo for us as this Investigation Continues and the search on one side continues for the fuselage d the black boxes of course. Is this intelligence investigation, let us get up to date on that element. Reporter right. The search going on right now for those black boxes, for the fuselage, really trying to determine what exactly happened to the plane and really thats where the clues are going to be coming from. Was this a terrorist attack or was this mechanical . And weve heard a lot of theory over the last couple of days of what it possibly have been. Yesterday we did get this report about the smoke in the cabin. When we talk oegyptian officials what theyre talking is it is still too soon to tell. Theyre still collecting the evidence out there and they have recovered some of the pieces of the plane and when you do look at them you notice they are fairly small pieces, so Going Forward again, the search is for the fuselage, those black bongss and then theyll have a better idea of what brought down the plane. Thank you so much. And as he mentioned and weve discussed this morning the search continues for the planes black boxes. The flight data recorder, what well learn once theyre found. Our aviation experts join us in a moment. Also, an aviation safety and security advisor giving us perspective on this new video. Some of the debris that has been collected. Weve also seen some video of a purse, of some shoes, of some fabric. Theres the purse and maybe well show some fabric that looks like it could have been shredded parts of carpet from that plaeb. A life vest removed from its holder which may be significant possibly as investigators now heres the life vest. It says egypt air. Nick robertson pointing out it was unwrapped which may indicate, may not, we do not know but may indicate that there was enough time that those passengers could be told to put those life jackets on. Mary is with us now, a cnn inspector general. As you look at this new video that is coming in today to us just in the last hour or so, what is your First Impression . Well, my First Impression is it impacted the water as a plane falling from the sky. I dont see any burned areas yet, but of course this is just such a tiny part of the plane, it doesnt mean it wasnt on fire or there wasnt a hot burning explosion and on that life vest if it was the demonstration model, it should say demo on it because the co 2 cartridge would be deactivated and i dont see that it says for demo only. But from the messages that came in yesterday, the emergency messages from the plane itself, it looks like they had a 3 to 4 minutes that they knew what was going on. The pilot windows, the smoke in the lavatory and 3, that there was smoke in the aif i dont knowics what is your first inclination when you hear those reports . All of these are in close mox similarity to each other. One would be to guess that something went off in that area. Some kind of either a small device or an explosive device that didnt take theplay plane out of the sky, but did damage in that area. Of course, the flip side looking at it from a mechanical standpoint, if something was going on in that space, the overheating or even the warning elements then that could have caused a cascading electrical failure and these warnings could be indications that the electrical system is having problems and failing, so those messages can go either way. It can mean some kind of device exploded or burned or that there was a fire set in a area or that you were having a massive problem with the electrical system and then the problem cascaded very quickly in about three minutes. There are more than 100 computers on this air bus 320 and they work in unison, so if one element is off, so to speak, does that kree yacht a domino effect and it could cripple the whole net work or pilots are trained to manage Something Like that . Yes, they are and both boeing and the air bus fly by wire, the planes are designed to try to save themselves so when you have systems start failing the plane will take other systems offline to keep that plane flying. What weve seen in other air disasters in the past though, if it is a mechanical failure and the pilots realize whats going on which they should have, then they do have time to get out a may day call, but thats not their First Priority. Their First Priority is to keep flying and we dont know that they didnt. One of the things that could have happened also are the communication systems. Is there explosive residue possibly on that debris that were seeing today . Yes, this debris is very, very important that they get that back and start analyzing it right away. There could be explosive residue and as much as they can pick up now before its in the water for a long time, every second matters. So appreciate your expertise. Thank you. Thank you. All right. As we get the first pictures of egypt air debris, what investigators will be looking for to determine what exactly took down this plane and the search continues right now for the fuselage and those black boxes. Thats the planes last point of departure before it crashed off the coast of egypt. Lets check in with jim bitterman. Hes at Charles De Gaulle airport. What is the airport doing in this investigation . Im sure going over their procedures but also a part of the investigation of air 8 o4. Almost immediately after the plane went down the french began looking over what happened here in the airport in the last minutes before it took off and theyre going through the surveillance cameras. Theyve got according to some reports 900 different cameras. Of course not all would be involved but also the people that was involved. Whos involved with the baggage handling and that sort of thing. Going through all those records trying to find someone that might be suspicious or any act that might seem suspicious. What happened here today but the foreign minister welcomed about 70 family members. Families that were related to the victims that crashed. Oofrench and other nationalties. They were brought in to hear the latest about the investigation thats going into the crash and the foreign minister warned against any kind of speculation about what the cause of the crash might be. Translator at this time im speaking to you, all theories are being considered and noun is favored. Our objective is doubled. Solidarity with the families but also transparency to them about the circumstances of the disappearance of this flight. The what we are told and we werent allowed in to this meeting, were told they had the opportunity to meet with the accident investigators, the dea which was the chief agency called to the ntsb and the United States and also to talk to the paris prosecutors who were involved immediately after the crash, any time a french citizen loses his leaf the office automatly opens up and we dont know exactly what happened because the press wasnt allowed in. Multifacetted, multilevelled investigation happening around the world. Thanks so much. Not the only airport obviously people are paying attention to. We have plans to get on planes and vacations usually start at airports. Yes, rachel crane is live at new yorks la guardia airport. And rachel, you and i and christy, weve discussed over the last couple of weeks the long lines there at tsa and now theyre the concerns of just how safe these flights are. What are you hearing from travelers . Good morning. Passengers, they are acutely aware of the need for Security Check points but theyre still incredibly frustrated by these insanely long lines. The crash of egypt air flight 804 is raising questions not just for investigators overseas but also among Security Officials here in the United States. We still dont know what happened there. Were fellowing the investigation closely. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the people who were lost but its a stark reminder that what we do is important and we need to do it well and efficiently. In recent weeks, the tsa has been plagued of complaints of long lines, and in some cases missed flights. 60 to 90 minutes is the average wait but some passengers say they waited nearly three hours and ended up missing their flights. We were just in security for almost two hours and ran to our gate and it was three minutes shy of the door closing. I got here about two and a half hours early and it still wasnt enough time. In a press Conference Friday the agencys administrator apologized to passengers and focused on security. That is the most important job of tsa and events have reinforce and reminded us that individuals and groups do remain intense on attacking the aviation system. Please thank them for the work that they do. The long lines are not their fault. The long lines are caused by lots of other things. Tougher security protocols and increase in passengers ahead of Summer Travel season and baggage fees are all factors leading to security line congestion and the solution might not be more agents according to one former official. The whole focus seems to have been from avoiding terrorist attacks on tsa and lets add more tsa people standing around as we walk through the magnetic detectors. That strikes me perhaps not front and center of what we need to do. Theyre adding more hoping they will bring down wait times and increased security. What i want to make sure of is that we do everything humanly possible to make Airline Travel safe. I wish we didnt have to face this madness, but we do. Now, the tsa is encouraging americans to sign up for precheck. They currently have about 2. 5 Million People signed up to for the service and hope to increase that to help speed up these lines. Joining us now the aviation and security advisor. Good morning to you. Good morning. So the developments weve been discussing relate to the system and the alerts that were sent out over a 3minute period relating to the windshield and smoke as well. Give us an idea of what the system is. Okay. Its called aircraft communicati communication, a device that is on the aircraft on the nose of the aircraft, which sends signals to the ground to the company. Pretty much like on the automobile system where we go to a shop and the mechanic takes a scan to find out what is wrong with the car. The same thing with the airplane. It emits a series of codes, numbers to the ground and tells them exactly how the aircraft is functioning. In the case of the technical aspect, now here what we found out yesterday is that the airplane was flying at 39,000 feet at cruising altitude. Within three minutes the system sends four key signals, codes. The first one, the copilots window recorded a heigher than usual heat. The electronic bay or the aif avionics bay went off. Also the forward lavatory Smoke Detector went off and heres the key, the flight director system went completely dead and the aircraft ceased transmitting signals. Let me jump in here. I know we have a graphic here that shows where all these parts of the plane are so lets put that up. Does this does this revelation to you reenforce or undermine the theory that a bomb took down this plane . Quite frankly, victor, i dont think so. Us who are in the nst gaugs process finding out what happened with the airplane crashes and so forth, we take our time. We cannot jump into early conclusions, but a bomb is an explosive device which creates an explosion within the aircraft. This is something that started in a series, and it reminds me of swiss air 111 which crashed over nova scotia and there were a few accidents leading to the systems of the aircraft falling in sequence. This is exactly the same. It was one after the other one and when you lose all the Flight Control systems, remember, the electronic bay is the brains of the plane. If you disable the electronics bay, especially this airplane, heavily computerized airplane, it will not be under control anymore. Thats one of the questions i think a lot of people are having, if this happened instantaneously how are these alerts coming over the series of 2 to 3 minutes . The answer will be found in that flight data recorder until we get that thanks for helping us analyze the information we do have. Thank you. But despite changing demographics, a democratic win in georgia is far from certain. President obama lost to mitt romney in 2012 by a larger margin than he did in 2008. Share with you knee new images, the first images that we are getting from debris recovered from the ocean where egyptair flight 804 crashed. You see that part of the plane there with the words egyptair very distinctly on them. We have seen some personal it s items, a purse, some shoes and even ripped up or torn pieces of carpet but this again some of the debris that has been recovered as that search continues in the sea this morningnt and heres the thing. I was just talking about that piece of carpet. Tourism is a vital part of the egyptian economy. If investigators find terrorism took down flight 804 it would be the third attack on egyptian aviation in six months. Back in november a bomb killed more than 200 people on a plane that had taken off from an egyptian resort. Were joined by christina. Im curious, what are the early indications youre seeing about the economy there . This is certainly not good. I mean, if this turns out to be a terrorist attack it would be the second in six months. A third attack on egyptian aviation actually was a hijacking back in march. All of this raises concerns about security and flying in and out of egypt and as you said, tourism is a vital part of the economy and the country has been struggling to get visitors back into the country since 2010. If you look at the numbers tourism reached a peak as far as the number of visitors go back in 2010 and it has declined every year since. So has the amount of money that tourists spent in the country. Thats cut by a half and if you go back in time, this is all linked to this really all started back in 2011 with the spring and the subsequent protests there. That made visitors scared to visit the country and it hasnt recovered. About a year ago there were discussions that visitors were trickling back into the country. The Washington Post ran a headline on that, so the country was in a position to start actually attracting tourism and then these aviation disasters completely knocked it off course. And it is just to put some context around this, a tremendous part of the economy, its got some amazing resorts. Right there you see 11. 4 of all economic activity, jobs, its a huge job creator in the country so this is an important part of the economy and also if you talk to terrorism experts around the world, they really see the link between a struggling economic circumstance and terrorism and radicalization. If people feel like they dont have the opportunity, it increases the chance for radicalization and thats why this discussion of economy is so critical in this kind of an attack. All right. So good to have you her. Thank you. All right. A loss for some republicans trying to pass a state law that would have made abortion a felony. A bill that would have criminalized abortion in oklahoma has been vetoed. According to the bill anyone who performs an abortion except in instances to save the life of the mother could be found guilty of a felony and sentenced up to 3 years in pron. The governor shot it down calling it ak big wous. It comes at a time when she is being considered as a possible running mate for donald trump. And sources in oklahoma tell us that this was a really difficult decision, because she is such a staunch opponent to abortion. Its something that she really wrestled with internally, but she did it bah as she said in a statement, the bill is ambiguous and so vague that doctors cannot be certain what medical circumstances would be necessary to preserve the life of a mother. Oklahomas Legislature Passed this bill thursday. The language found it anyone performing an abortion could be charged with abortion. Of course abortion rights activists called foul. The president of the state medical association calling it disappointing and an obvious move to intimidate doctors. Oklahoma is facing a pretty severe budget crisis, so the idea of her forking over hundreds of thousands of dollars in a vie doe is what led to this.
