In berkeley, demonstrators looting multiple businesses, a peaceful protester trying to stop a leader was hit in the face with a hammer. A guy with a crowbar comes in, starts stealing stuff. Reporter this as a grand jury decided not to indict the officer in eric garners choke hold death. This is the message, we dont want any violence, but keep on keeping on. Reporter just the night before, demonstrators threw things at will is in full riot gear. Some demonstrators say on social media, police were firing rubber bullets. Police have yet to comment. In new york city over the weekend, a few hundred people crashed with police, staging dieins at Grand Central station at a flagship store, in heralds square, the National Outcry even hitting the field. Washington redskins defensive lineman chris baker making the hands up dont shoot gesture after a play and several nba players wearing i cant breathe tee shirts. The new york city mayor says Rudy Guiliani fundamentally misunderstands the reality. You cannot look at an incident in cleveland and new york city and ferguson all happening in a space of weeks and act like will is not a problem. Reporter guiliani says it is racist not to act knowledge block on black crime after he tells his biracial son to take special care around police. You should spend 90 of the time the way they will get killedtial which is by another black. Reporter garners widow says she fears for her children. I am so afraid of what could happen to them in the street by the police. Im afraid of the police. Another demonstration is scheduled today in the capitol, a diein staged there. Powerful images we have seen in these dieins happening around the country. You do have this group that clearly wants this to remain peaceful and you do have a group that is feeling they need to clash with police, maybe its a tactic. Thanks so much for that update. Joining us now from phone is the officer for the berkeley California Police department. Good morning. Good morning, thanks for having me. What happened there last night . We had another demonstration march at the height the group was approximately 600 people. This time the group marched through some of the major businessaries here in berkeley and caused a significant amount of damage for several businesses, breaking out windows and looting the stores. And why is berkeley of all places, do you think, having these violent clashes when bigger cities like philadelphia and new york seem to be more peaceful . You know, at this point its hard to stay specifically why, you know, in this case somebody would take it to the extreme. Berkeley has been known for its protests and abilities to freely express yourself, but to do it in this manner, it is kind of shocking. How many arrests were made last night . Im not sure, the protests started in berkeley, but went into different jurisdictions. But tonight weve made five arrests in relation to the protests. You know, we have also heard police there have used rubber bullets and tear gas. Is that right . We doesnt use any specifically this evening. Yesterday, we did deploy, you know, tear gas and smoke in relation to the violence occurring towards the officers at the time. As you know, several of our officers were struck with bricks and metal pipes and we had several officers injured, both yesterday and we had two officers injured today. So i guess the question is, why not arrest more people . Well its just hard to, with crowds this size, you know and to maintain the safety of the community and the Peaceful Protesters, its hard to self go if and make, you know, the large mass arrests. We do try to pick out the people that are, you know, specifically causing damage to property and are looting so that we can try and make sure that those specific people that seem intent on, you know, committing crimes are arrested for the actions that they are taking. Thanks so much for keeping us up to date. Let us know what happens today and tonight in berkeley. Thank you. Thank you, have a good morning. All right. Lets get the Police Perspective on this, we have the president of the National Organization of black Law Enforcement executives and jeffrey blackwell, the police chief in cincinnati, as you remember went through its own race riot problems. Chief, let me start with you. You understand why people are protesting. Let me ask you, do you think its warranted . Well, i think the country is speaking to us very loud and clear. I wont answer whether its warranted. But we are police chiefs, police agencies, across this country, hear the public loud and clear and we have to have a recommitment to being better at what we do. Mr. Alexander, dr. Alexander, within i say warranted, i dont mean an opinion on thege froms. Im saying the issues that have come out about imbalanced treatments and the meth odds of enforcements used in poor and minority communities, do you think people protesting have a legitimate beef . No, sir, not when it comes to violence. To be able to execute your First Amendment right, we agree with that thats what my friend is saying. But to be violent such as we saw last night and the night before is totally unacceptable. What i would say to that community out there in berkeley is that there is a whole country thats acknowledging the pain of whats going on and something that is not right. But to get your page across, this is not the way to do it. What i would say to that community, chris, is that they need to stop and desist immediately any further violence. If you want to march, you want to protest, thats fine. But to put Police Officers at risk to do what you are doing, to damage those buildings, those businesses, your local economy, is just not acceptable. Chief, the conflict is, obviously, nobody wants to tolerate breaking the law in the name of having better Law Enforcement. Right. It doesnt make sense, it often happens in these situations. The conflict is, you are telling people to stop doing what theyre doing. They dont see change addressing tear grievances yet. So how do you strike the balance . Well, we have to start. The rioting is distracting. As long as this is going on, there can be no dialogue. We can not get to the heavy lifting of some agencies recalibrating or retooling, other agencies that have systemic issues may need to rebuild and start over with their enforcement platforms and everything, their training platform, everything they do strategically, we need better training, more diversified force, not only for the optics of how that looks, but for the internal perspective in role call rooms. When you have diverse forces, they tend to treat People Better and differently. Actions need to get there. The bigger issue is they need to be collaborative with their communities, cant be top driven. It has to be organically grown from the ground up. The problems and the strategies in those cities to address those problems. Chief, i hear what you are saying. Dr. Alexander wrote, i bet for cnn, outlining many of the points saying how to build a more sensitive officer. I have to tell you what im struck by, ill give this to you, doc, recruiting diverse forces, having them to understand their community. If you get them to live in their community, thats great, other than arrest people in their community, spend time with them, thats great. Shouldnt that have been being done all along . One thing we have to remember, chris, there are a lot of departments across the country that are currently doing that and have been doing it for some time. They have been practicing Great Community oriented policing, but there are communities that still struggle with that concept and you are absolutely right, in light of everything thats going on right now, every leadership from elected officials, to appointed physician, rather their chiefs, sheriffs, whatever the case may be, we all should be working very hard, very diligently in the aisle working with our communities and the community has a responsibility as well, too, to work with tear local Law Enforcement agencies towards these issues that we know are going to make a difference Going Forward. And it does cloud the situation when you see the worst of police behavior, you see the worst of the protesters. It does make it very difficult to move forward. You guys are laying out good ideas, lets hope we get to the next phase the question is, what will be the solution of the chief, thank you very much, dr. Alexander, always a pleasure. Chris, president obama calling for patient and persistence in the wake of patient and violent protests. He will speak of the death of Michael Brown, eric garner in an interview airing later today. So that you dont give up when we dont get all the way there. Reporter he says there is hope for progress. As painful as these incidents are, we cant equate to what is happening now to what was happening 50 years ago. You talk to your parents, grandparents, uncles, theyll tell you that, you know, things are better, not good in some case, but better. Reporter this as the president is dealing with a health issue. Hes had a sore throat for weeks and the white house says an unexpected hospital visit this weekend we vealed he has acid reflux. A white house official says a ct scan was done out of an abundance of normal. No autopsy was done or planned and he will be treated. Sunday evening, the president appeared in good spirits. Reporter keeping up the last leader at the Kennedy Center. And the president s voice showed no hint of a sore throat. A white house official says it has not had an impact on his routine or schedule. It doesnt seem to have affected his voice quality, at least detectible to all of us. We will talk to the good doctor sanjay gupta coming up. Despite the National Protests and deepening racial tensions, president obama has decided to keep a controversial profiling practice, the white house says it will allow federal agents to racially profile Airline Passengers to enforce Immigration Laws. Cnn is in washington with more. Good morning, evan. Reporter good morning, mikaela. The Justice Department later today is expanding the federal ban on profiling, the new rules for federal Law Enforcement have been in the works for five years. Theyre more relevant tan ever given protests around the country about police conduct. Now the new rules will ban profiling based on religion, national origin, gender, Sexual Orientation and gender identity. Thats in addition to ethnic and racial profiling. What is still allowed, is profiling at the bordered and airport screening checkpoints, the government says thats fess to enforce Immigration Law and for National Security reasons, but bringing criticism from some civil Rights Groups that want a total ban on profiling. Mikaela, attorney general eric holder is pushing for state and local Law Enforcement to adopt the federal rules as well. All right, evan, thank you so much for that. Tear captors just as navy seals got close to getting them. Defense secretary chuck hagel called the raid, quote, necessary, saying somers life was in imminent danger. Was there any other strategy that could have worked . Yemen, al qaeda and americas war in arabia, a contributor to buzz feed as well. Great to see you this morning. Thanks, so much for having me. You are the perfect person for to us talk to, you have your own terrifying experience where you narrowly avoided being kidnapped in yemen earlier this year. So what did you think when you heard about how this rescue attempt had gone so tragically wrong . Yeah, this is something that obviously strikes home for me, luke somers was taken outside of a Grocery Store on the same street in which the attempt on me was made earlier this year, what tends to happen in these situations is you are thrown outside the city and sold from one gang to another until you end up with al qaeda. Obviously, there were other people held with luke somers, if the attempt had gone slightly differently, i would be there as well. I understand before you went to yemen, you had a plan him you new it was a possibility, you would talk to your fiance about it. What was your plan had you been taken . Right. So this is one of the things you really struggle with when you go to a place like yemen. The last place i had gone there was in 2012. I had been writing and reporting on the country. If 2012, after the arab spring, that was the first time i felt physically unsafe. I had seen videos. There was an attempt on a german dip lo massachusetts he escaped the kidnapping. The would be kid napers chased him down and executed him on the tile floor. That happened in yemen. So i few some of the dangers and you talked to, i talked to the woman who would become my wife. We talked about what to do, who to call what to say in the situation i was taken. One of the things i could never come to grips with is what to do when someone grabs your arm . In my case, they were grabbing my arm coming out of a restaurant and tried to hustle me into a cab. It was a 35second struggle, theyre pulling on my arm, im pulling back. Then the kid napers dropped my arm and the arm of my yemeni friend to chamber a bullet. Thats when we took off running. At that moment, if you get in the car you are kidnapped. If you dont, they shoot. Thankfully, in my case they did not shoot. In luke somers case, they forced him into the car, then obviously it ended very, very tragically this weekend. Of course, you know, there is this ongoing debate about what the u. S. Should do when an american is taken hostage, the policy has been you dont pay for terrorists. Today, luke somers family feel the american strategy was wrong. Heres the statement they put out after this botched capture attempt. They said, we are sure luke would have given support to the ongoing discussions to secure his release in yemen rather than the conflict approach. There have been threats before that have not been carried out. My goal, lukes father, was quite angry, if there was not a rescue attempt he would still be alive. Of course, its impossible to know that, down the u. S. Should rethink their strategy in terms of negotiateing with cantors . Certainly, your heard goes out to luke someers family dealing with the loss of a son and a brother. Its a situation thats difficult. The u. S. Is if a difficult situation. Countries like the United States, south africa, britain, dont pay ransoms for tear hostages, other European Countries do. So what happens is that you tend to be divided up by nationalalities. We seen this in iraq and yemen. The question i have is two to free luke somers, one on november 25th and this last one over the weekend. Im very, i have a lot of questions about why the raid on november 26th took place. There was nothing heard from luke somers for 14 months. Obviously, im not privy to back channel negotiations. F it was only after that failed raid on to have 25th that al qaeda put out a video threatening to kill luke. Fact, thats what we saw unfortunately happen is that they murdered luke as the u. S. Forces were approaching the village. Of course, we know the Pierre Korkie family says they were close they believe to securing his release because they had worked with sillian negotiators. They were willing to pay 200,000 in order to get him out. Okay, he was killed in the rescue attempt as well. Great to talk to you. So great to get your personal experience and expertise. Of course, wed love to know what you think about this. You can find us on twitter. Lets go over to chris. So Rolling Stone, are you following this story . We are. Its changing the situation again. Rotting stone magazine is clarifying their explosive story detailing that alleged detail. On friday, the magazine seemed to be backing away from the story after ald accounts of the story have been surfacing. They say the mistakes are the magazines fault. Not the alleged victims. We have more, what do we know, sarah . Reporter yeah, alisyn, in response to that apology, National Greek organizations have called on uva to reinstate fraternity activities. They have been cancelled after that Rolling Stone article came out. Today is finals week, students that we have talked to here say they want the focus to remain on the broader issue of campus Sexual Assault. Rolling stone magazine now says they are to blame for their story on an alleged gang wrarngs avoid criticizeing jackie, the unidentified accuser at the center of the explosive article, saying these mistakes are on Rolling Stone, not on jackie. The attorney for Uva Fraternity tells cnn several details in the article are wrong. Records show there was no party the night jackie claims she was attacked. There is no side staircase inside the frat house, which the article States Jackie walked down after the attack. And the Fraternity Brother who allegedly brought her there was never even a member of phicappa si. Now they want to keep focus on how the university and students react to reports of Sexual Assault. I remember crying when it happened. I remember saying no. I remember pushing him off of me. Reporter emily powell says she was assaulted last year at uva by a following student fooling first date. Why didnt you go to the hospital the next day . I asked a person who also happened to be a friend of the person who assaulted me to take me to the hospital. Because she had a car. She told me that she would take me in a week, once i had calmed down, which very much felt to me like she thought i was making this up. They threatened they would tell the police i was obsessed with the idea of wrachlt i would accuse anyone of rape. They would say i was mentally unstable. Now, police are still investigating that alleged gang rape of jackie. The girl in Rolling Stone. In the meantime, we talked to her friends, they say its clear to them she did suffer some kind of trauma. Something bad happened to her. They acknowledge some of the details in Rolling Stone may not be accurate. Thats for police to sort out. So confusing and troubling as well thank you for the updates. We will talk about this later. Our chief National Security correspondent jim scuitto traveling with chuck hagel. This is his final time there as defense secretary. He announced his resignation for months. Lets go live. Good morning, jim. Reporter good morning, alisyn. Something of a farewell tour for secretary hagel, his last trip after his announced departure. Also a farewell for u. S. Troops in afghanistan. The transition from a combat role to a training role, although we learn a,000 more will be in afghanistan, 10,800. Than the original,800 to secure a place that secretary hagel said is still a very dangerous place. This is schuk hagels fourth trip to afghanistan, his last as secretary of defense. We tracked him where he met with troops in afghanistan sharing his own experiences, the first enlisted combat veteran to serve as secretary. Do you think it will be lost for the secretarys position to not have that experience in the world . Thats not for me to decide. Everybody brings to tear positions their own set of experiences and their own strengths and i believe my set of experiences fit me very well. Thats chuck hagel. I dont ever judge anybody else. Reporter at the end of this month, they will give up their training role, a new mission as the u. S. Preepairs for a complete withdrawal in two years. The u. S. , we saw how they resolve with the advance of isis. Why are you confident that Afghan Forces will perform better . They want us to help them askis, advise, train. How are we left, iraq was totally different. The Iraqi Government did not want us there. The iraqi people did not want us there. It is training, advise, assist. But u. S. Forces will be able to do force protection and go out and future trallize that threat. In addition, you mentioned combat enabling. How much danger will u. S. Troops be as they transition out of an official combat role . There is totally different from where we have been but i think the bottom line is we have to realize, this is still a war zone. This is still a war. You put men and women in a war zone, theyre still in a war zone. Reporter taliban attacks are down from 2013. Secretary hagels visit comes during a new wave of taliban violence in the capital kabul. Water the most concerning thing you have heard from commanders, the thing that scares you the most . I think this country, first of all, has made tremendous progress. Where afghanistan was five years ago, two or three years ago, there is hardly any comparison, but it still has threats. Al qaeda, taliban, they have built the Afghan Security forces a very Strong Security force institution, so, yes, still challenges ahead but i think every sign is they can do this, but its still a dangerous place. One thing thats clear from our visit there is yes, International Forces transitions, they will go on missions to attack rem navents of al qaeda, they will be flying Close Air Support on their own combat missions, also, theyll be able to go out and attack the taliban when it is believed the taliban presents a direct threat to u. S. Forces. That does, as the secretary hagel said, very clearly there, does present danger to the u. S. Forces that will remain there into 2015. Welcome back to new day. We have new polls, theyre very interesting. They reveal just how bad the racial divide is when it comes to trust in police. According to an nbc news poll, 70 of americans say they have fallen as police in berkeley, california use tear gas on protesters and hit concertgoers leaving at the same time. They were taking bottles, pipes and rocks thrown in their direction. The question is, what do we think about the poll numbers . How do we move forward from here . A contributor to real news on the blaze tv and cnn political commentator, oped commentator for the new york times, good to see both of you. Let start with the first number we have here. Have the recent decisions increased or decreased . White people 35 say it decreased. Only 35 . Africanamericans, black people, 70 . Surprised . No, im not surprised by it. I think what we have seen is people have responded to these decisions in very different ways. I think a lot of africanamericans see the decisions themselves not just about those particular cases but outgrowth of either decades or generations. Right. Of enequity. Thats what gets me about the number, though, i would think that africanamericans say we are getting to see what i have felt as markers, 70 said they were affected by these decisions, why are the whites also lower . I think it colt from experience, unfortunately, there is more interaction with africanamericans with police, socioeconomic issues, the interactions initially with the police are different than what most white americans experiences, that contributes to part of that i also think the media plays a larger role in frameing them a certain way, that now we are beating the drum, you are doing polling. You are looking at things where black folks are saying, okay, you feel this way, now they have an opportunity to express it. You have riots, protests, it becomes the national story, so then more people will feel as though they can speak out on the issue. Its how we frame it. The next poll number, do you agree, it applies to whites and blacks . This goes to the heart of the issue. You see the numbers on the poll, the whites strongly agree. You have a divide here. Its not surprised. Its probably deeper than most suspect. What is it in terms of where we go in terms of consensus, charles . You will not get any change. Right. If you have blacks feeling one way, whites feeling another, what do do you . I think a part of this poll question, this debate, we have to see each other. Small groups of people can have huge effects, you can have small groups of flagrantly bad ploefrtss who have a mixed perception of all Police Officers being corrupt. Can you have small groups of criminals who make whole communities feel unsafe. All of that goes into the perception of how people are treated and in how we interact with each other. Theyre probably also the reality. You cant demonize the police. By and large, they are incredibly specifically keeping down the death of young black males. Thats the reality. No matter what numbers you look at. The same thing with the communities, the poorest, worst, if you want to identify problems, a uniquely american fe tom none. The most minority filled, the poorest group, you are still dealing with a small group of people developing that almost. Theyre the ones that want the police in their neighborhood. Why that is is a different discussion. Thats the reality. They want the police there, there has to be a 5050 give and take here. Yes, there is that feeling of misperception and trust, why is that . Community policing is so important. Establishing that relationship is crucial. Malik aziz, the president of the National Black policing association, he was very opened on that as well. You cant put the honus entirely on all the policing. The community plays a role, too. Moving forward, we need more discussions on what brings us toepg, instead of what divides us. I think the way the narrative has gone right now, it has been a wedge issue. You have black folks going one way, how inflammatory the discussions have been, we havent been able to find Common Ground to actnology certain things and move forward. There has to be some self perception as well. Unspoken dhings that go to the nuts and bolts of change, so many Police Officers are reaching out to me. Theyre going to tell us to do all this extra stuff now, to get more involved with the community. They cut our budgets. Now they will say they told us again and thats something we have to watch down the line. One last number about whether or not things have gotten better or worse since president obama came in, they say they dont like the way he has handled the situation. More importantly, things have gotten worse with him. I dont think why we thought it would have gotten better, though . I think there is this idea that somehow silence was harmony. That is not the way it was. There is a lot what we are seeing with president obama is, in part, reaction to him, but not only to him, but also in a reaction to dragging the race discussion out of the shadows, out of academia, having it all the time in our faces. It is very uncomfortable to have. This is very difficult. It challenges us to look at our own biases. He is a democratic president. Are you likely to have always would have disagreed with him anyway. Now you have to examine on top of that, whether or not there is anything else happening, thats a very uncomfortable situation. So i think that six years of us dealing with that, means that complicates that conversation. Other aspect is the president ran on he was going to rise above race, he was supposed to be a postracial presidency. And he never said that. Well, it was portrayed that way. Then when we come in, eric holder comes in, calming the nation cowards, because they dont want to have an honest discussion on race and the racist issues since president obama became president , the way he handles it, people go, i dont know. Interestingly enough, people thought Race Relations were better president bush. Black folks thought Race Relations were better then than now, when discussions come up, people are forced to think about this. They go, wait a minute, you have a president saying this is a deeply racial country. Hes a black president , he was elected twice by a white country. That brings a certain tension to the conversation as well. Look. We have to have this conversation allot. We need to keep it going. Not just when we are in crisis. Thank you very much for being with us. This is one of the stories we are following. But there is a lot of news for you this morning. So lets get to it. We dont want any violence. A new night of violence an looting. Chaos on the streets of berkeley, california. The next thing you know, the windows break. President obama made an unexpected visit to the hospital. He has been complaining of a sore throat for last few weeks. He is still smoking, that could be contributing to his current symptom. A u. S. Hostage is killed in a failed rescue attempt in yemen. Its that element of surprise was taken away. Sit imperfect . Yes. Is there risk . Yes. Good morning, everyone, well come back to new day. There are violent protests to tell you about police and protesters in berkeley, california. Authorities say the situation is under control and they confirm five people were arrested. Some businesses, though, significantly damaged by vandals and looters. This is the fifth day of demonstrations, particularly in new york city, protesters staging dieins and sang carrolls expression anger over the choke hold of eric garner and the shooting death of Michael Brown. Good morning, chris, eight arrests in oakland overnight and five in berkeley. Serious damage between police and protesters. Violence erupting for a second night in california after 500 protesters swarm the freeway. A standoff with Police Officers who arrest a small number of people. In berkeley, demonstrators looting multiple businesses, a Peaceful Protesters was hit in the face with a hammer. A guy with a crowbar comes in, starts stealing stuff. Reporter this after a grand jury decided last week not to indict the officer in eric garners choke hold death. Its the message, we dont want any violence but keep on keeping on. Reporter just the fight before, agitators in berkeley, california broke windows and threw what they could at police in full riot gear. Some demonstrators say on social media, police were firing rubber bullets. Police have yet to comment. In new york city over the weekend, a few hundred people clashed, staging do iins at Grand Central station apples flagship store, macys in heralds square. The National Outcry even hitting the field. It gets away, it goes down. Reporter walk redskins defensive lineman chris breakbaker making the handsup, dont shoot gesture after a play sunday and several nfl players wearing i cant breathe tee shirts. New york city mayor bill deblasio says his predecessor Rudy Guiliani fundamentally doesnt understand. You cant look at this all happening in the space of weeks and act like there isnt a problem. Reporter guiliani blasted deblasio saying it is quote racist not to act knowledge black on black crime after he tells his biracial son to take special care around police. You should spend 90 of your time to talk about the way you will probably get killed, which is by another black. Reporter garner told meet the press she fears for her children. I am so afraid of what could happen to them in the street by the police. Im afraid of the police. Are you . These demonstration versus taken on a different tone and have gotten uglier, five patrol cars were vandalized over the weekend and two of the officers had minor nonlife threatening injuries, already, we are hearing for these protests to continue throughout the week. Thank you so much for that update. Lets talk more about what people can do to strengthen police and their communities, mr. Mayor, thanks for being with us. Thank you, alisyn. You said on one of the sunday shows yesterday, we had two of the worst weeks in American History in recent times. What do you mean by that . I think the decisions or indecisions, if you will, out of ferguson and staten island, the resulting response from people in communities who are angry about what has happened the seeming failure of the criminal Justice System and at the same time the outpouring of demonstrations and protests, the seeming 48 of relations at times between citizens and the police, the citizens need the police to protect them. The police need citizens to respect them and having Good Community police type of relationship, it really cries out for a Greater National conversation on issues of race, on issues of justice, on shy lens and social equities. All of these issues have been building up. To have these out of different grjs and different locationings backtoback for incidents that people cannot understand why Michael Brown in dead. People cannot understand why eric garner is dead, in light of the video. Please respect our Police Officer, i do, many do, Police Commissioner ramsay is strong on community policing. Our oefrgss are out on the beat on a regular basis. Whether in sfid or anywhere else in the tunt country, let us acknowledge there are some issues and challenges that people are dealing with we have to keep the talk going, if terms of the Justice System. People dont understand, they want to be heard, then they want action. That really is our responsibility. As elected officials, we must hear them, listen well and put steps in place to fix the social equity, the issue of violence in communities. People are tired and theyre starting to lose hope. Thats a dangerous situation. Mr. Mayor, all of those points, there are new polls i think that capture and ask the question, do you agree or disagree Law Enforcement applies different standards, 82 of blacks agree with that statement. That is a true imfor blacks. Whereas only 39 of whites think that thats true. So how have you advised your chief of police to change how that department does business in light of all this . Well, commissioner ramsay and i have talked. This goes back to our earliest conversation even before he was Police Commissioner in philadelphia. Its about how do we treat people . I know how i want to be treated. I am born, raised, educated in philadelphia. I know what it was like in the 60s and 70s and the dysfunctional relationship at times between police and communities especially in the Africanamerican Community and communities of color. I will not stand for that, at the same, we have to be careful. The overwest welling majority of the people want to do their job, took the job for the right reasons. They also want to come home from their shift to their family. This is a dangerous position that these Police Officers have taken, at the same time, because of a few officers or some systems have broken down, we need to make sure we are not pointing everyone with the same bad brush. They have legitimate issues and concerns. To not Pay Attention is at my peril in my opinion. Great to see you on new day. Best of luck whats going on in philadelphia. Heres a look at your headlines, 8 minutes after the hour. Two hostages have been killed in a high risk secretive u. S. Raid in yemen. Luke somers was fatally shot by their captors as u. S. Force attempted to rescue them. The white house ordered this. Korkie, a South African teacher may have been hours away from a negotiated release that the u. S. Did not knowant. Cia tortures, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee tells cnn, extremists could use the report as propaganda. The report is a summary of cia investigations conducted several years ago, it could be released as early as tomorrow. A massive fire shut down two major freeways in the heart of los angeles. They are trying to balance this blaze, a mixed use building under construction. Officials do not believe anyone was living in the building when it broke out. Actress daniel watts will be in a california courtroom today with her boyfriend to face charges of lewd public conduct. You will recall she made headlines in september. She and her boyfriend claim Police Detained them, because she is black, her boy frernd is white. Witnesses reported the couple were having sex in the car with the door opened. Its really the door opened thing that pushes the limit. Kind of. Right . If you are inflicting our actions on the neighborhood. Even in new jersey. Well, hands off new jersey. All right. Secretary of state john kerry is preparing to go headtohead to get authorization for military force against isis . Will they approve . What is isis going to do . Will it stay down for business . John king will lay it out for you on inside politics. Ups is a global company, but most of our employees live in the same communities that we serve. People here know that our operations have an impact locally. Were using more natural gas vehicles than ever before. The trucks are reliable, thats good for business. But they also reduce emissions, and thats good for everyone. It makes me feel very good about the future of our company. Hi. Im new ensure active clear protein drink. Clear huh . Im not juice or fancy water. Ive got 8 grams of protein. New ensure active clear protein. 8 grams protein. Zero fat. Ensure. Take life in. All right. So there are some big topics on the table. We have a key u. S. Senator, authorizing the war the u. S. Is in against isis and a related and controversial report on torture tactics that will be coming out tomorrow. Lets bring in senator tim kaine, serves on the Foreign Relations committee and budget committee. You have it all covered, senator. Glad to be with you. Welcome to new day. Lets talk about this. You are Holding Hearings tomorrow. Will you have secretary of state john kerry there. The obvious pushback is why have a hearing . Why not vote already . Why isnt this happening . Whats your take . Look, its shocking we havent had a vote the president started this war against isil on the 8th of august. We are four months today into this war. Congress hadnt had a debate or a vote. I filed an authorization resolution with an authorization with limitations in september. I have been trying to get a hearing on it. Finally we will have a hearing this week, senator menendez our schar has pushed. We will have an authorization on wednesday or thursday. I am glad we are finally there, it shouldnt have taken this long. Why did it take this long . Some of your brothers or sisters want to sue every president for every action he takes. It seems both sides of the aisle have gave pass with the postdangerous power the president holds. This is the most significant. Whats happened is the leadership sent a message to the president in june, we would rather you do this without us having to vote right away. June 25th was about do not start military action without congress. We were told first we should wait until after the midterms. We will get to i. We should wait until the new year, well get to it. The fact of the matter is the president should not be able to wage unilateral war. You know our fighting men and women are having trouble there, when they come back home, this is a real issue. Here its been skirted. Its the fighting men and women that makes me do this. Constitutionally, congress is supposed to weigh in. The real issue here is you shouldnt have men and women to risk their lives. We have had three deaths as a result of troops unless Congress Says this is a Mission Worth doing. Its really immoral for us to send people into harms way. So thats what this debate is about this week t. Isil threat is a real one. I port the president s mission. I dont support the president not pushing congress and definitely congress at this point. So confident down there. What happens if it winds up disapproving of recalling the war and funding for it. I think the chances of disapproval are low, the president had the votes in september. I get a rough headcount in the senate. It was probably a 2to1 vote. The leadership has debated this. So now lets talk about what poses a risk to our fighting men and women abroad. I would submit this report that comes out tomorrow will do that. I am taking this from chairman mike rogers. Its a torture report basically, what was done under the administration. The practice, if they were true, are no longer done supposedly under the Obama Administration. They have been stopped. Why put out a report that will incite violence, put men and women at risk if they have been stopped, whats the upside . Chris, were a democracy, we feel, i deeply believe that things that are done in the American Peoples name, the American People out to know about this, this administration has been worked on for a number of years, including, its been worked on to redact or structure some of the reporting so that identities are not known i think there is protections in the language. Not on the intellicommittee. I havent seen the report yet. I know how hard they have worked to effectively inform without needlessly exposingtime people to risk 12k34r the cia has hard working men and women, it guarantees our safety and these methods led to that. Do you think its so easy to say to people, look what they did with this water border, nobody is going to like it. Isnt that pandering for the uninitiated of people . Isnt war an ugly business . Isnt this the reality of what it takes sometime . I think we will learn through this, there is two aspects you will see covered in the report. What information did we get because of detention. Nobody is arguing we shouldnt detain terrorists. We need to detain them. What information did we get with respect to detention and enhanced interrogation techniques. I think you will find the detention works. The interrogation didnt. What that means is for the future, we know what works and what doesnt. Thats whats important. Does it concern you that many say backgrounds or off the record to the media and you as well, listen, im not a sadist. I dont want to hurt people. This works, what we do, thats why we do it. Does that discourage you in terms of wanting to expose these methods . You know, if you expose them, you wind up ending them. You do. You wont have the American People saying water boarding, hooray. Its not going to happen. The issue is does it work . We will find out not only what was done, more importantly, if they work. If they dont work, can we quantify them. I have a feeling if they work, few dont need the enhanced interrogation techniques, that tells us what we should be doing Going Forward and not do Going Forward. Great to have you on the set. We watch what happens with the report. We look forward to speaking with you again, alisyn. Chris, as you know the british gate scandal has been doging governor Christian Christie for months. Now, there is a report about what really happened. Will it resolve questions about christies president ial bid and what happened to bridgegate once and for all . Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. 58 seconds on the clock, what am i thinking about . Chris, as you know the politics. The shift in the global economy. You know, the kind that capitalizes on diversity across the credit spectrum and gets exposure to frontier and emerging markets. If you convert 4quarter p e of the s p 500, its yield is doing a lot better. If youve had to become your own investment expert, maybe its time for bny mellon, a different kind of wealth manager. Five american performers honored for their Creative Genius and cultural contributions receiving the coveted Kennedy Senate honors. The honorees, of course, tom hanks as you saw there, comedian lily tomlin, ballerina Patricia Mcbride and sting honored by robb for more than just his music. Not everybody can pull off a name like sting, but this guy can. His wife, trudy, calls him sting. Apparently his kids call him sting. Lets face it. Its not as cool as sting. He did that very well. Good delivery with his jokes. There is a new report that draws some conclusions about the bridgegate scandal. Lets get to inside politics on new day with john king, which rhymes with sting. I guess the question is, will that report sting Chris Christie. Oh. Well get there in just a second. A busy week in washington. Let go inside politics, julie, thanks to the associated press, jonathan martin, the big question in washington this week, this a government shut down week or is this, ill call it question the tea party week in the sense the past several times we have been through this, the Republican Leadership has nervous. The tea parties in this case, theyre mad about the executive actions. They say deny him any money, dont put money in the spending bills, the leadership says, no, we are not shutting down the government. This time the leadership seems a lot less nervous. They think theyve got a hand him on this one. Boehner and mcconnell feel much more confident. They think they have come up with a good plan. They know they will not get the most conservative tea party line members to vote this. They dont think they necessarily need them. They will try to get nancy pelosi to get democrats behind this. She signalled she will not whip her caucus against it. If things go as planned, everybody will get out in time for the holidays without a shutdown. This last act, within it comes to mcdonnell and boehner, their expanded power. Mouch how much is the last act important for setting the tone for a more republican few walk in just a few weeks . I think its hugely important. I think you will see boehner say, hey, a new sheriff here in town. We now run this place, we have to act like we run this place, there is a sense of confidence on the hill last week, you dont seem sort of frantic scramble on the republican side that you did before past deadlines here if recent years. Theyre confident the votes are there. One thing to watch, though, some of those democrats in the house might balk at the idea of not funding dhs next year. But the current proposal is to fund most of the government but dhs only for a short few months. So they have to revisit that one. Thats the agency that does most of the immigration enforcement. Theyll have more members next year. Again, mcconnell and boehner more members think like them. The question is, is that the right guess . Yeah, i think it is. Certainly in the senate it is. I think the question is next year can the senate gop assert their power to push his members . Thats going to be the real tension next year is the hard liners in the house versus the more on the south. The position, a house of representatives, will be the new republican senator come january, defeating mary landrieu. Republicans went from 45. They will have 54. A huge year in the senate. The House Majority is expanding, southern democrats are disappearing. Listen to bill cassidy when he was asked the question, why republicans insurgents in the south. There is one party for the working party right now, the Republican Party, barak obama impedes our jobs. We are a working family region. The Republican Party is the party of the working family. Not that far back. These numbers are from politico. In 1962, every senator, the overwhelming majority, next year, democrats will confirm 39 of 149. Its incredible, we talked about the senate and the house, those are perhaps, if not equally influential, more influential. You can seen the problems that barak obama has had in trying to implement his policies and getting blocked by governors. So democrats, when you talk about problems republicans have, they look at demographics and democrats will have real problems in all of these races, perhaps for years to come if they dont figure out a solution here. Julie, the state legislate irseat, increasingly red. Republicans have a map problem, democrats have a math problem when it comes to the senate and the house, essentially, they have become a rock for republicans. Its tough to win there, i was truck about the popularism and what you see in the south and parts of the west is republicans have a wedge of their own. They want to stopping, for example. Like the new unions. That will play out in pren 2015. Well, speaking of keystone. Chris christie was in canada, he says there is no excuse, another sign that Chris Christie is inching towards a president ial run, his team thinks this is more easy to do, less controversial to do, they are looking into bridgegate. The Committee Says there are unanswered questions. They say they couldnt figure out. They found zero evidence Chris Christie was involved is it behind . Completely behind him or are there still things to worry about . Its important, if there had been a direct connection, at the same, this reminds me a little about benghazi where you have multiple reports and people who want to find something will continue to dig and make this an issue. The big question is the democratic apparentee who obviously has significant legal authority. A job christie, himself, had been done. That will be telling. This is a step forward. Yes, one more committee. Getting this behind him, as long as the swords hang over his next. More of these reports they can get behind him, the better. Its interesting to see, a guy from new jersey, grass roots think hes a pod rat, hes more mitt romney. All systems seem to be go at the moment for Chris Christie, thank you for coming in, you guys came to me last night. Keempb colbert was there, he will interview the president if washington this week. He moves over to replace david letterman, here is stephen colbert, the president and first lady and making a key wrap up 2014 Midterm Election your point. The most powerful and influential person in the world, michelle obama. Lovely first lady, lovely to see you. Good evening. There she is. Looking radiant on camera next to the president , which i assume means she has no future plans to run for office. Thank you for being here, maam. No, there are a lot of democrats who dont have that courage. Alisyn, chris, you know the president at least taking the joke. He got it. He can actually be laughing. Sometimes he gives the courtesy nod, he seems to be liking it. He doesnt like the results of 2014, he can let it go. It falls under the category, its funny, because its true. Amen to that. Good to see you, john king. You dont feed a nickname with that name. Yeah x true. We will start calling you that. Thanks, john. Does he even work here . Dont listen to the naysayer. Take the comcast business speed test. Get faster speeds or more savings, or well give you 150. Comcast business. Built for business. President obama made an unscheduled visit to Walter Reed Hospital over the weekend. According to white house and his doctor, the president had symptoms of a sore throat over the past couple of weeks. Now doctors determine that has been caused by acid reflungs. Lets bring in senior medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. It sounds garl gnarlily. Why would it cause a sore throat . First of all, acid redplux is a fairly common condition. A lot of people describe it as heartburn, they have acid that gurgles up, if you will, into their esophagus and their chest. Typically you have these sfi sphyncters, sometimes acid can get throw up at fight lying flat and they dont have gravity, people wake up with a particularly sore throat. Thats what sort of prompted this exam as pointed out, he had a sore throat a couple weeks now, they were careful to say this wasnt an emergent, rather the president had an opening on his schedule, theyd conduct the exam and the ct which came back as normal, we are told. That is sort of a story the white house is giving us here, pick la. Can you talk about the gravity and lying down, those vows, but there are other things involved here, too. Im assuming from everything ive read, stress, anxiety, can be factors in all of this we can imagine the president of the United States has a fair amount of that, also, smoking, where is the president on his Smoking Cessation programs . Do you know, sanjay . We have asked that question, smoking is a risk factor, current and past smoking. We are told, we asked that question, he has stopped smoking. Is he chewing gum a lot. Nicorette gum, clearly, if he is smoking in anyway, ocasually, it is a specter for acid reflux. The cat scan the ct scan done, that is probably not typical. This is the president of the United States we are talking about. So an abundance of caution again is something that comes into play here him typically, what happens if someone has acid reflux, you give them treatments or recommend dietary changes, to stop that reflux. If it doesnt go away, in his case, they got a cat scan, probably because he does have a history of smoking. If there is a mass there, if this isnt something more serious. They say the cat stan is normal. Lets be clear about that. That i think at first might be a little confounding to people. They kind of rushed him there. They tell us because he had an opening in his schedule. They performed these couple of tests. They want to get a visual on whats going on in the throat and esophagus, right . Thats the first thing they did. I asked about this as well. Sometimes people will get some se days ago for that. They say the president did not get se days ago for that, that raises a whole host of other concerns about the Vice President and everything, the senior staff was all made aware. They can spray and sort of anesthetize the back of the throat, put a camera down and take a look specifically at whats happening in the throat, in the back of the throat. What they saw there were changes in the back that were consistent they say with acid reflux. It gets a little enflamed as a result of the acid such touching the back of the throat. Then they got a cat scan to make sure nothing else was going on. No reason for them to think there wasnt anything else going on, this was as you said, precautionary, since you had them, lets double check. Yeah, i think thats a fair assessment. These situations, we can go by what the white house is telling us, what the exams they tell us showed. Why did they get a cat scan at this point . You can say, look, hes the president. He is being very cautious. He has this, as you point out, this remote history of smoking. We are told he stopped. Someone who is a smoker who has changes in the back of their throat, i think you tend to be more aggressive. Make sure nothing else is going on here that can be causing these symptoms. We know dietary changes likely will have to be taken into consideration. Which i wonder if michelle is wagging a thinger at him, our first lady saying, you should have been listening to me before. Sanjay gupta, thank you tore chatting with us, walking through this information. We present it. You got it, any time, thank you. All right, chris. Mick, have you heard the royals are here to take manhattan by storm . Theyre everywhere, Prince William and kate, this is their first trip together to the big apple. So water on tap . Well, beyonce and jayz going on here. We will take you through their agenda. Hey what are you doing . I was thinking about taking this speed test from comcast business. Oh yeah . If they cant give us faster internet or save us money, theyll give us 150 bucks. Sounds like a win win. Guys faster internet . I have never been on the internet and i am doing pretty well. Does he even work here . Dont listen to the naysayer. Take the comcast business speed test. Get faster speeds or more savings, or well give you 150. Comcast business. Built for business. The royals were here, Prince William and the duchess for their first trip to new york city. Prince william heads to d. C. To meet with president obama. Kate, five months pregnant, remember, will meet children in harlem. Tonight theyll attempt the basketball game in brooklyn. They have a lot to do. We havent mentioned beyonce and jayz. Here to break it all down is our own royal correspondent matt foster. Hello. So what are they trying to accomplish here in new york . They are raising money for their cause, also, we are the Financial Capital of the world. They are working closely with the British Government about bringing trade from the u. S. Into the u. K. Its very intensive. Its over two days. And ill be going to harlem with the duchess, where she will be going to the Child Development center, which is one of her key causes. I was at that hotel yesterday benefit they arrived and literally when the motorcade came in, there was this crowd that came across the road. The police were pushing them back. In the u. K. , they would have been a lot closer. A lot of frustration. Tension in the city right now. Not just photo year about tackling illegal trade and wild life. Hes got this 20 minute meeting quite long for someone in his position with president obama today. Hes going to discuss how to tackle that. The way hes dealing with that is try to cut out demand rather than dealing with poachers. Its become a sensitive issue criticizing china. How to get involved without being a politician, without getting involved in politics. Hes going to have a speech at the world bank later on. Hes going to try to compliment china instead of criticize. Its all in delivery of the message. Another thing were all excited about and im curious how it compares in britain and state side is the baby bump. Shes five months pregnant, the duchess is. This morning there are more calls for demonstrations to continue across the country all week long. Thanks for that update al alexand alexandra. Lets start with the National Protests and unrest were seeing in places like berkeley. We understand president obama is going on b. E. T. Tonight, black entertainment television. We have a preview of his interview. Let me play that for you. This isnt going to be solved overnight. This is deeply rooted in our society and important to recognize as painful as incidents are, we cant equate what is happening now to 50 years ago. President obama is is engaged in the National Dialogue happening about all of these issues regarding Law Enforcement and blacks in america. Is there anything else the white house should be doing about this . Well i think any president would have to be engaged in this dialogue. I think in this case a obviously because president obama is the first africanamerican president that more people are looking to him to have a role in the dialogue. Additionally, what hes doing and what a president has to do is have the attorney general eric holder in this case, launch investigations in specific cases where there may be a civil rights case to be made. Whether the grand jury have indicted on a criminal case. There could be a case to be made. What the president is trying to do and its not easy is balance the outrage that a lot of people feel especially in the wake of the eric garner case where you had video, compelling evidence of and Excessive Force by police against the overall argument can which has to be made there has been significant progress made over the years. President obama is an embodiment of that process. Do you think well see charges in the eric garner case . I dont know. Its always difficult to headacmake a federal case around issues like this. Especially in the garner case, they have a better chance of putting together a case than in ferguson. Lets move on and talk about the report on cias enhanced interrogation tactics. Here is what the chairman of house intelligence can Committee Says about the report. He doesnt want it released. Were going to pay a lot of money to countries that take particular countries. Thats not their culture, where theyre from. Intelligence services are supposed to monitor these people. Weve found in the past it doesnt work. Foreign partners tell us this will cause violence and deaths. Our foreign leader who is approach the government and say you do this, this will cause violence and deaths. Our Intelligence Community has assessed this will cause violence and deaths. We have seen what happens when other incidents are used in the propaganda terrorist machine to incite violence. If we have intelligence saying this will cause a violence and deaths to have this released, why are we doing it . Because were the United States and cant brushened the rug a series of incidents this report reveals. A significant amount of care has to be take nn the way the information is packaged and preparing the ground for release of information. Its not news to anyone that water boarding tactics were used, other tactics that amounted to torture were used. This president ended those practices, but will there needs to be an accounting in my view. I think its important for the American People to know what has been done in the name of the United States in the past. I understand the reluctance, the concern about potential violence. I dont think that those are strong must have arguments to make against the idea of releasing the this information. Jay talking about enhanced techniques which some call torture. We all know water boarding, sleep depravation, confinement in small spaces. Will this a address the big question, did tactics lead to sbel jens that was able to stop some sort of terror attack . I havent seen the report. We dont know yet. Overwhelmingly the argument will be made in the report that the tactics, the torture techniques, did not produce a lot of actionable intelligence. On the other side, there are suggestions that some progress was made because of the use of techniques. What opponents of torture argue and i think they have a strong case to make is the intelligence garnered through torture could have been through other means and by in large torture doesnt work. It does produce what weve seen, outrage around the world and hurts the United States more than it helps our cause. Lets talk about the tragedy this weekend. The failed rescue attempt of two hostages. We were trying to get luke somers out of al qaedas hands. Navy seals went in and somehow the terrorists were tipped off and ended up shooting luke somers and Pierre Korkie who his family say he was hours from being released. They had gotten 200,000 reportedly to secure his release. What can the white house do about families that want to take matters into their own hands when their loved one has been capture sd and they feel the administration is not doing enough to get them out. As you saw from the attempt to rescue the american hostage and attempts in the past to do the same, the United States is focused on trying to get american hostages back. These are incredibly difficult operations. Weve seen when the white house authorized these attempts, weve been extraordinarily successful and lucky. This is a tragic outcome. The risk involved with when you send in navy seals in an environment like this is immensely high. Any time the decision is made by the commanderinchief and military leaders to go forward with a mission theres a High Percentage and huge possibility hit could go wrong and hostages could be killed, navy seals could be killed. I think in the end, we have to take those risks in order to try to release these hostages. Of course what makes this particularly sad, korkies family went to bed believing they were hours away from his release. They woke up, and he had been killed. There seems to be a major disconnect in communications. The u. S. Government didnt know his family was trying to secure his release many back channel ways and hadnt communicated with each other. Is there anything the u. S. Can do with that type of communication with victims families . Thats hard especially when not an american family. Were going to have less incite into whats happening with other foreign nationals being held hostage. Hah communication would happen hopefully between governments. The family whos member has become a hostage is communicating at least with their host nation, with their National Government that might be communicating with the United States intelligence to intelligence services. If this played out as the family says it can did, its obviously a terrible tragedy. It is. Lets talk about the president s health. Hes reportedly suffering from acid reflux. Is this something he was plagued with when you were in the white house . No, i dont remember any incident that said to me oh my gosh hes got acid reflux. I heard sanjay gupta talk earlier about the concern of the president s physicians making sure when theres a throat issue shes all clear in that regard since hes an ex smoker. I dont know that with special insight. I imagine thats the case. I can say when it comes the to smoking i was press secretary early 2011 to summer of this year, i never saw the president smoke. I know for a fact after he quit, he quit for good. Thats a good thing. I think my guess is some of this has to do with stress of the job. Its not exactly a serious illness. In a circumstance like this, when youre president of the United States, they check everything to make sure hes okay. Overall hes healthy. Im no doctor, but i too am going with stress of the job of being president. That sounds plausible. Jay carney, great to see you. Thanks for having me. Lets get to michaela for more news. Here are headlines now. Security fishes in pakistan report a drone strike killed a Top Commander in that country with other militants. The drone fired two missiles where taliban had gathered. Defense secretary hagelle confirming the american journalists was killed by captors during the special forces raid meant to free him. South african hostage Pierre Korkie was also killed in the mission. Is this just something that went wrong, or do we have a skewed view of how successful we often are in these measures . Lets bring in phillip mud and former Counter Terrorism official. I want to ask you about the report coming out tomorrow. Lets deal with whats coming out today. Should this be seen as these seals screwed up and didnt get it done . Or is this the reality . People had a false sense of security this stuff is easy. What you see in aftermath is what you saw the past couple of days. Youve got to find, fix, finish a target in the area owned by the bad guys when you dont have perfect intelligence. Half of this was a tremendous success to locate a target like that in the bad lands of yemen with enough specifications to plan a raid. At the end of the day, its whether or not you save the guy isnt it . Sure. Youre going in saying 5060 chance of success in a raid like this is a pretty high ratd. Theres 90100 chance if you dont raid, hes going to get his head cut off. The u. S. Says we heard they were going to kill them if we didnt do this now. Thats why we did it. On the other side you have the families who are saying we had a deal to pay ransom, and they were going to release them tomorrow. That takes us to the issue whether or not you negotiate with terrorists. Listen what mike rogers, chairman of the intelligence committee, had to say about that. When you pay ransom, you get more kidnappings. Thats what we saw across africa, certainly seeing it in yemen as well. I agreed with the president s decision. I dont think this was an easy decision. I think it was the right decision to engage and go in for the rescue attempt. Make the case for what the chairman is saying to me. For me, they will kidnap any way. If up the chance of getting back a loved one, why not chance it . I agree. The white house is undergoing review on what to do in situations like this. Theres other things like prisoner exchanges. Ransoms have problems. The chairman is right. First ransom you pay, groups see this as an this can stream not just an exchange for prisoner. In the world i live in, Counter Terrorism world, operations are cheap. The back end of terrorism, administration side paying the teams of terrorists groups, paying the widows when their spouse dies, paying kids when their father is killed, thats expensive. Id say even though it may look like on american terms relatively small numbers, but for terrorist groups, this is a lot of money. Such tragic circumstances. Everybody was hoping for a better outcome. Question is can you make that happen in a better way Going Forward. You mention cia. The report comes out tomorrow. The question is whether or not you air. Rogers says dont air it. Youll make everybody angry. Everything in it has been cancelled. First of all the department of justice said what the cia did wasnt torture. We jumped over the hurdle saying what we did pushing against the flexible wall is torture. If you judge whether tactics you use, whether you consider torture or not works, people will talk when under duress. Separate question whether you think america should do that. People will talk. We checked what they said based on other data we had. It turned out to be accurate. In your experience, has the u. S. Ever not tortureed . Sure. If you look at the history of what we did before 9 11, his bla tortured a cia officer to death. We were charged after 911 with making sure this didnt happen again. We went to the white house and said if you want this to happen, will things were going to do. They said fine. Ten years later, theres the metropolitan moon walk in d. C. Metropolitan moon walk . Is that term of walk . I just made that up. That was great. On the spot. So youre saying theyre backing away saying they knew what this was we told them. This is washington d. C. I didnt witness a single secret at the cia that didnt come out. You think we kept a secret they didnt know about . Excuse me. That aint the way that city works. They knew. Now its unpopular. I understand what mary saying. Weve had 13 years to reconsider this. Theres a fair debate about american values. Do you want Security Services doing this moving forward . But moving back saying what you did was wrong after we checked every box we could, i dont get it. When you say under duress, straight answer it. When you use techniques, do they work better than when you just detain them . We didnt try just detaining them. People say you could have gotten this information another way from the hundred plus high value guys. History wont know. The problem we will have today in assessing this is a problem historians have had forever. Going back to that time, i was at the table in 0203 we did not have the luxury of time to wait. I sat there friday night saying is the big one going to happen tomorrow . I dont know director, i dont know president bush. We better figure out today. People have told us if this happens again, its on you. Whats going to happen when the report comes out tomorrow . Do you think there will be backlash . I think there will be. In my world of Counter Terrorism, the echo effect lasted years because photos were available last time on the internet. The echo effect will hit the law of independent consequences. Something bad will happen. Non how bad. Yalk people will sit back and watch the show. When we go to break, you can explain what a plexable wall is. For you out there, let us know what you think about these issues. Tweet us. Rolling stone magazine under fire over the discredited report of alleged rape at uva. Thanks. Tonight on cnn, we have a special with five cosby accusers coming together. We interviewed them. Let me play you a small portion of that. I want him to suffer, suffer like weve all suffered all these years. You can ask any of these women, how were your relationships . How were your marriages . How were your jobs . How was your psyche . How were your dreams . Im having nightmares. I want him to get well. Its not going to happen. Im living in a fantasy world. Its like nars schism. Theres no cure. Maybe 25 years of behavioral therapy. Its super official. They lack personal insight. Dr. Drew, you liked it when you heard joan say she wants him to get well. Is it possible . Its possible. Ive interviewed joan. Joan tells me shes been speaking about this experience for years at meetings. This is not new. Its new in the social media. She understands people can be sick. As far as him getting sick, people do get well from personality disorders but have to be highly motivated. I can see where this could motivate someone. Hes on in his life. It takes a long time. Its hard to change people after age 65. It would be difficult if he has these things were alleging. Have you seen in a clinical environment this number of people coming forward and saying it happened and it being elaborate . No. Think about motivation. What would motivate people . There could be a frenzy. At the core you always find something of truth in there. That speaks to the coverage of this which is there is no physical proof. We have people on social media saying these women are lying. Theres no proof. Why didnt they come forward sooner . Were playing their stories because we believe theyre credible and done the best Due Diligence as we can looking into their back stories. Theres no actual evidence. Each story built upon the other making it seem more credit lk and believable. The only evidence to your point is corroborating with other people that knew that person at the time. We have heard a little of that. Thats as close as we can get to prove did they confide in people afterwards . The Public Discourse about rape is extremely healthy with a criminal manner which doesnt exist. Its too late. Theres no way to make this a criminal theres not a legal matter. He cant be charged. Theres maybe civil stuff. Thats probably why his attorneys wont let him speak. Theres Public Discourse, ethnic, moral issues. Theres legal issues. For us to discuss this publicly and empower women to do so is extremely healthy. Well stay focused on that. Those five women, hats off to them. Theyre getting beat up online. Thats the thing i always come back to. When people ive had conversations with people i know, smart people on the street say, doesnt it seem like everybody is coming out after him . I think joan said or one of the other women, i dont remember she said to to get 15 minutes of shame . Why would i want to subject myself to that . Jan ns has been telling me ts story for years. I have a tape in 2006. She feels bad she didnt speak louder sooner. Thats the interesting thing. These women have been speaking out. Thats what the public doesnt know. Weve just started listening. Now we put a camera in front of them. That and is it that is the soil ready to have this conversation . Women felt they would be shaped but made to feel responsible for this. Why would they want to be tainted like that . Brian, one factor for you. There are some of these women this is all soft because we dont know a lot of this situation beyond what they came out with who had relationships with him after the event that they woke up in a weird place. They kept going. Now, what does that mean do you think in terms of a reporting responsibility . What do you think it means psychologically . It requires more skepticism, more challenge and followups. On the other hand doesnt it also require thinking about where he was at on the top of the world in the top of the Entertainment Industry . It speaks to victim mentality. We hear about women in Domestic Abuse situations that stay with the person that are the abusers. Thats the question when asking follow up questions. The extraordinary thing of a human being, when weve been terrorized early in life, were attracted to people that put us in those situations. He was speaking about it in comedy acts and being gloer fied by it. That was not healthy, not a good time. Times have changed. I want to talk about the Rolling Stones if ifiasco. These women on College Campuses are more comfortable speaking out. Where do we stand with the Rolling Stone reporting . Did this gang rape happen or did it not . Many jackies friends believe something trauma aic happened to her. Thats the first name of the accuser. The last name is not public. I spoke to a fellow student who have felt this reporter came in with an agenda, wanting to write a story that would be ugly for the university. There are ugly issues at the university. She felt the reporter went too far. Rolling stone were reviewing the pieces figuring what went wrong. Well hear what the next steps are. Their concern is theres one thing about the story itself if hit checks out or not. Now the concern is theyre concerned that people that are or have been victims are going to feel shamed again, come out of the darkness. Or theyll slow the conversation on College Campuses which is active now. They have great posters that say how do you know when shn is consenting or register consent . We see this on a regular layway sis, more than its exposed to the audience. You take it too far, further than you need to, to juice the story. The victim told the reporter as i understand she was afraid of retaliation. She didnt want the Fraternity Brothers to know she was talking out. If youre a victim of crime and they ask you not to contact the alleged criminal, thats a tough situation to be in. Ultimately Rolling Stones made the wrong decision a agreeing not to contact the alleged attacker. One of the alleged attackers said they barely know jackie at all. Had the attackers retaliated, that would have also been the wrong call. You dont always hear the whole story. This is an important subject. If you go out seeking a story, sometimes youre not going to get the full truth. I dont want to assume thats what happened in this case. Weve been trying to contact the writer. If you call her, her voice mailbox is full. Shes not talking. I wonder if its a case she was trying to tell a story that might have gotten in the way not to lose the forest for the trees. The subject of what happens with Sexual Assault on campus is real. Whether she was attack add by one man or seven that is still a tragedy. The fact the university did not follow up, investigate and suspend or expel students, thats the story. And to suggest theres no problem on College Campuses we have issues. People are work hard. Journalism affects everything it touches. This is affecting the larger story. Stick around. We want to talk to you more. We havent had a chance to hear your voice here about why these stories are resinating so deeply right now. Is it like you were saying last block, a moment that were experiencing here in america . Of course. For some reason i dont know that i can articulate in meaningful way except this is a lot about social media. It gets out. Theres a tendency now for some reason to form mobs. Im not saying these demonstrators are mobs. Online in social media, the behavior is a mob mentality. Line s are drawn right . Lines are drawn, but people are swept in mobs without thinking about what theyre doing. Whats the end game . Why are we doing this . Why are we angry . Theyre not clear about that. Hopefully theyll achieve something productive. In the meantime a, its gratification of a mob. There are things to be angry about though. I understand the word mob. There are so many reasons for protestors to be out there. There are so many injustices that a should be protested. Ive been surprised since the the crash of 2008 to the markets that we didnt see more protests among young people. Im a millennial. I think especially folks younger than me that experienced the crash in a profound way and havent gotten jobs since or gotten their lives together since. Thats what im struck by in the faces of protests, young faces. Especially in new york. I want to look at poll numbers that i think were interesting. First of all, the Bloomberg Politics poll. A grand jury in new york decided not to bring charges against a white Police Officer in the death of an unarmed black man. The question they asked, do you agree or disagree with the decision . 60 strongly disagree. Versus this is the part i find contrasting. The brown decision. 52 agree. Youre not surprised by the difference. Is it presence of the video . Its very different cases. Facts are different. To a lot of people it doesnt feel different. Its a narrative to many about the Police Brutality the. The black white thing is the same. Garners wife says she doesnt think its about race. The fact is there was obviously Excessive Force and why. People were not surprised in the Legal Community that Darren Wilson wasnt indicted, especially with the role of the prosecutor. Thats where the criticism should be placed. Garner is a more troubling situation. Isnt it big issues and Standard Police have to reach in order to be prosecuted . They have to be intending to harm somebody. Theres nowhere else in our country that people, when they kill somebody with their car, as a physician, that they have to prove intent to kill thats because they have the allowance of force as part of their job. I understand that. All the more reason there should be laws creating the ceiling in which they have to be measured. Physicians are assumed to be quite the opposite. We too are held accountable if somebody dies. Its not there in police. Thats what people are angry about. In the brown case, the camera was supposed to help us. Here it is in video, still no help. Thats why people are outraged. The video makes a huge difference. The fact we could see it over and over again it was supposed to be the answer. Here it is on video. It is the answer to its part of what would make it better. It made National News and got people on the streets. What about changing the standard to some standard whereby police, other than intent to harm, theres some other standard you can inadvertently hurt machine and be held accountable to some level . Legally they go before a grand jury. He was presented with the same list of crimes anybody would have in this situation. The only difference is an officer is assumed theres a good reason for them to use force sometimes. As whereas with a citizen, you have to show your life was in danger all the time. In many states, for a cop, you have to show you were in fear of something being done to you. Thats what happens in the Michael Brown case. He was in fear. In los angeles, we have this police force where you never saw lethal force. Canine units and rubber bullets and all kinds of things. They got many trouble for using lethal force. There are alternatives if we create laws and systems. Its expensive. Thats the problem. One thing about laws. I feel i understand why there are so many young people in the streets. On the other hand we didnt see them come to the polls last month, didnt see them try to affect the political process. Even in ferguson and communities around st. Louis where this case was sensitive. We didnt see them try to affect change. Im not saying demonstrators are mobs. Were getting swept into stuff on a feeling basis on social media. Its translating to things we want to do in real life. No matter what we know this. Theres an active dialogue going on. The question is bring the noise down and thought up. Exactly. The crisis and moment is going to pass. What will really change . Thats when the dialogue needs to kick in. Thats when you need leaders. I said from the beginning, in ferguson there was a vacuum of leadership. I still see it now. This cant be the president. This is done at the local level. Great to see you. It should go without saying, Police Community relations are not horrible everywhere. An officer goes above and beyond for a woman who desperately needs it. This is the good stuff. Well show you this great relationship. Will that be all, sir . Thank you. Ordering chinese food is a very predictable experience. I order b14. I get b14. No surprises. Buying business internet, on the other hand, can be a roller coaster White Knuckle thrill ride. Reliably fast internet starts at 89. 95 a month. Comcast business. Built for business. All right. Its time for the good stuff. Yes, i picked it for a reason. Police are in the spotlight for worst that can happen in pursuit of their job. There are a lot of good cops serving and protecting. Dorothy shepherd was all by herself, just went through knee and back surgery. She was in rough shape. She struck me as someone that needed someone to care and actually help her out. He said ill give you my cell phone if you ever need anything. Call me. As it turns out the next day i did need a ride. She called the officers cell phone. He hung up on her. No, no, no. He gave her a ride. The rides didnt stop there. For the next six months, officer john holder took dorothy everywhere. To her doctor appointments, Grocery Store, all while he was off duty. Okay. The officer wasnt looking for attention for this. Somebody snapped a photo of him helping dorothy at the Grocery Store. It went viral generating thousands of likes and more importantly a lot of good will. Thought it was Pretty Amazing all the great comments that people made because a lot of times Law Enforcement is seen in the negative light.
