Shot by an officer who still has not been identified because police there say there are security concerns, safety concerns for his life. We have a lot of coverage this morning. We want to begin with cnns ana cabrera. Reporter eerily quiet. That was all just a few hours ago, and this is where it all ended, after the flash banks, after the tear gas. Small Group Protesters made their way here to the Police Station, in fact. They were greeted by a heavy police force, riot gear. They had their guns drawn. When people refused to leave here, more people were arrested. Now this is the backdrop as the missouri governor comes here for a second time and we head into another day of uncertainty. Overnight, ferguson erupted, perhaps the most chaotic protest yet, Police Firing tear gas and flash bangs to disperse them. Tv news crew runs for cover as a canister runs directly in front of them. There it goes. Theyre firing on to the crowd. Ouch [ bleep ] they are firing rub beer bullets. Reporter dramatic video captures utter chaos. Police advance on the protesters, sending them running in fear. As officers fire rubber bullets and smoke grenades in this residential neighborhood. At least 18 arrested overnight, including two journalists, detained while police attempted to clear out a local mcdonalds. The altercation caught on camera. Lets go, lets go. We dont have time to ask questions. Reporter this video from after brown was killed captures the heartbreaking moment when a man, believed to be browns uncle, rushes to his life less body and is immediately pushed away from police. Don lemon exclusively the details of what she witnessed. What i saw was when the cop and michael were like wrestling through the wib dough, it looked as if michael was pushing off the and the cop was trying to pull him in. Then the cop shot fired through the window. Michael starts running from the officer. Michael jerks his body as if he was hit. Then he turns around, faces the officer, puts his hands up and the officer continues to shoot him until he goes down to the ground. Reporter another eyewitness describes how the officer repeatedly shot brown even though he was unarmed. He was trying to get away from him. Why did he continue to shoot at him . I dont get that part at all. Why was he killed trying to get away from the officer . Even when he turned around and put his arms in the air, he was killed, shot multiple times. Reporter multiple witnesses tell a similar story while Police Maintain brown assaulted the officer in his car and tried to take his weapon. Shooting at ferguson, 2190 said they had more shots fired in the area. Reporter the police chief now says the officer suffered injuries to his face during the altercation and was taken to a local hospital. He is very shaken about what happened that day and the aftermat aftermath. Reporter earlier wednesday, police asked that all protests be held during the daytime. Thursday nights protests continued as scheduled. Police responded with force. There it goes. Theyre firing on to the crowd. Ouch reporter as the dynamics here continue to be so heated, theres been this trickle down effect. In fact, the school year has been delayed. The start of school was supposed to happen today. Now classes will start on monday, in the hopes that the situation will stabilize. But many fear that things could still escalate. The Group Anonymous, which has been very active on social media, has called for today to be a national day of rage, urging people to protest around the country in solidarity with the people of ferguson. Kate, john . Seems to be getting more and more out of control rather than getting under control at this point. Ana, stay with us. Ray downs, staff writer with the newspaper, the riverfront times. He was also covering last nights protest live, tweeting the dramatic moments as they unfolded. Ray, thanks so much for jumping on with us. How would you describe what happened last night . Weve heard a lot of people saying chaos, unrest. If you look at this video and you look at some of the pictures you were tweeting, how would you describe it . Well, the first thing that started these protests have been angry. They havent been violent. But people are angry. They use Strong Language because they are very angry with police. They are not protests that are a lot of kumbayas. They have a lot of problems with police. Its a deep problem in ferguson. Once police started with the tear gas, things did get chaotic. Thats the perfect word for it. It was chaos. It was intense. It was dramatic. People shouting, crying, scared, angry. All that mixed in one. It was a pretty crazy scene. What did you hear from protesters on the ground . You were there with them covering this scene whachlt did you hear from the protesters . While the tear gassing was happening or before that . Throughout. Throughout all of it. Throughout . Yeah. Throughout, the root of it is peoples problems with the police. They have deep grievances with the police. And they want things to change. They want harassment to stop. They want racial profiling to stop. They want Police Officers who know the area, who know the people and the community in that area so theres a better connection between people and officers. Theres a feeling that the police are not one with the people there in ferguson. And that causes a lot of problems. A lot of that is the root is probably race but a lot of it is also just that disconnect. Thats what people tell me. A lot of distrust going on. Yes. When youre watching this escalate throughout the evening, police saying there are reports of molotov cocktails being thrown at them, then the tear gas began, when youre watching all of this play out, did the Police Response seem reasonable . Thats the question a lot of people are raising this morning. Did the police go above and beyond . Was it excessive . It was extremely excessive. I mean, yes, a molotov cocktail was thrown. I saw what looked like a molotov cocktail a few feet away from me. And other people saw it, too. To kind of reiterate how, you know, different that one or two or three people in the crowd, whatever it was, out of hundreds is i mean people were saying, no, no, doubt. And then someone running, obviously, because they knew what was going to happen, tear gas, armored trucks rolling through the streets, tear gas being thrown on peoples lawns. Yeah, its excessive. To see it, its striking. It looks like an invasion, basically. Ana, what are police saying about their response . Whats the police side of this . The police are saying that they want to make sure that this situation doesnt get more out of control than what weve already seen. We saw looting that happened on sunday. And thats really what they want to avoid. Another situation like that in which theres property where people could potentially be injured. Were not hearing any serious injuries from last night. Well continue to ask those questions, though, about exactly what happened and whether or not this response was justified. Absolutely. And, ray, one final question to you. After a very long nooim night, after everything that you saw and nearly two dozen arrests, what are you expecting to happen today . I dont know. Well have to find out. Hopefully, it wont be worse. But i talked to quite a few people and a lot of them feel that it will get worse before it gets better. Hopefully, thats not true. Ray downs, riverfront times, st. Louis. Ana, thanks for your great reporting as always. Well check back with you throughout the show. A lot to discuss today as it seem that is st. Louis suburb is outraged right now. The idea that it could get worse is chilling at this point. Absolutely. Absolutely. Well have lots more on the violence gripping missouri coming up. The u. S. Military Assessment Team found far fewer refugees hiding from extremist militants than they expected. Officials say that air strikes on the isis positions have allowed thousands to escape on their own. Cnns Barbara Starr is live at the pentagon. Barbara, we were speaking all yesterday morning. This is not the situation that many people expected to find when u. S. Special forces finally stepped foot on that mountain. I think it was very unexpected, john. I was talking to ac senior u. S. Official a short time ago. As he said, if youre going to be wrong about the intelligence, at least this time it was good to be wrong. This morning, over a dozen u. S. Air strikes, fleeing a murderous rampage by isis proving effective. On wednesday, u. S. Special forces were deployed atop mt. Sinjar to assess the situation facing the religious minority. Cnn knew about this special operation on tuesday but agreed to withhold the information until the troops left the mountain, as officials feared for their safety. In less than 24 hours, the Group Discovered most of the yazidis were able to evacuate, destroying key isis checkpoints, opening up an escape corridor, according to u. S. Officials. The president said, when he spoke to the American People, were going to break the siege of this mountain and we broke the siege of the mountain. Meantime, we kept people alive with humanitarian air drops. The few thousand yazidis left, receiving an air drop overnight, topping 114,000 meals and 35,000 gallons of water. U. S. Officials say a Major Mission to evacuate the remaining people is far less likely, as they believe forces supported by u. S. Air strikes can help the people escape. But the Brutal Campaign by isis is far from over. The United Nations announced its highest level of emergency for humanitarian crisis wednesday, estimating more than 400,000 people have now fled their homes in fear of the tyrannical militant group. Is the siege really over as the state Department Suggests . A u. S. Official told me a short time ago that air strikes will continue and they will continue to keep isis at bay if they see them on the move again. John . Those strikes will continue. Important information. Barbara starr, thank you very much. I want to bring in rick francona. Thank you for being with us. Appreciate it. What happened, what we learn ond mt. Sinjar, the refugees not as numerous as we thought. Many were allowed to escape much quicker than we thought. The air strikes and air lifts may have worked better than we thought. How were they able to make this so quickly with the u. S. Forces and why do you think everything that was done worked so quickly . Internal defense, used to going out, working with locals and assessing situations very quickly. They were able to get up there. As we always say theres nothing like american eyeballs on the target. American military people judging what the American Military will have to face. And, you know, professionals looking at the situation. So, i think this is good news. We had an American Team up there, providing a good assessment. What youre looking at right here, these are some of the air lifts, bringing in aid and bringing out some kurds. I dont think this is what got most of the numbers out. Most fleed on foot, maybe even through syria and back into iraq. The question now for the u. S. Military, you heard Barbara Starr say they will continue the air strikes. Do you think that is all they will do . Do you think they will provide more direct aid to the kurds in direct conflict with isis . I do. We cant rely on the iraqi army. Theyve proven themselves to be ineffective. The kurds, on the other hand, have proven themselves to be willing to engage if they had the weaponry. Theyre getting the weaponry. Its flowing. I talked to a friend of mine in erbil. Theyre seeing it already and theyre grateful for it. Weaponry . Are we just giving them weapons . A lot of people ask me do we have u. S. Special forces now on the ground in direct conflict with isis and were just not seeing it or hearing about it . I would hope so. I also know our intelligence operatives are on the ground up there working. They dont count as troops or boots on the ground. We may be providing that direct support, much like we did in afghanistan. The afghanistan model worked for us. You put special forces and cia officers on the ground. They can direct those air strikes and make them much more effective. Theyre there even if were not hearing about it. One of the new crises seems to be these yazidis women and children taken and brought to mosul, an isis stronghold. Is there anything that can be done to get these women and children out of the grips of these militants . Short of going into mosul, fullscale attack, not really. The problem is these women have no special status. Theyre not considered people of the book. Therefore, they have no status. Theyre not even considered to be people. They can be handled as possessions, sold into slavery and do whatever. What can we do about it . Short of liberating mosul, not really much. That doesnt seem likely at this point . Were nowhere near that. Air strikes, Barbara Starr said air strikes will continue. What can the air strikes do in terms of keeping isis movements to a minimum right now . Right now theyre not in baghdad. They tried to move there before. Down here, there may be a little bit up here and theyre up here. Can the air strikes hold them in place . They can. The focus of the air strike sincere very limited, keeping this corridor open around mt. Sinjar. Thats allowing them to get into syria, work with the kurds in syria, and bring them back into camp in the far north. Were using the air strikes to protect erbil, as isis gets closer to erbil, theyre hit on the front lines and held at bay. The problem is that were not going against isis anywhere else. Like syria . And baghdad, theyre being stop bid Ground Forces down there. At some point if were going to take on isis and treat the disease, not just the symptoms, well have to go after isis wherever they are. Thats the whole western part of iraq and the eastern part of syria. You may be able to stem the tide temporarily, but to turn it will take greater effort. Michaela . Thank you so much, john. Pope francis is in south korea this morning, the first trip there by a pontiff in some 25 years. North korea fired at least three shortrange rockets off its east coast this morning. The last one fired about half an hour before the popes arrival in seoul. To the mideast, a new fiveday cease fire seems to be holding in gaza despite a brief round of air strikes. Israel responded to rocket fire moments after a truce was announced. Earlier, the spokesman for the government spoke to cnni this morning about the new agreement. We have accepted these egyptian proposals. The truth is there is nothing new there. Israel has consistently agreed to an unconditional extension of the cease fire. Our problem has been that hamas either rejects or violates these cease fires. Unclear who is responsible for the rocket fire that triggered that latest round of air strikes. Hamas claims they are not responsible. Ebola outbreak, a vaccine that could help protect medical workers in west africa. That could take almost a month to be available. President obama has been briefed on the situation on the ground in ferguson. Almost a week after the shooting theres still no idea of the officer who opened fire. Mo ivory, radio personality very close to our show. Hi, mo. As well as steve cardian, former member of the new York City Department of investigation. Steve, thanks so much for joining us. I think its an important aspect to have you part of this conversation. Were looking at the images. Look at the sight of your screen. You see tear gas and violent reaction from both sides. We spoke with a local newspaper writer, ray downs, from the riverfront times, who quoted our scene to our kate bolduan as an extreme reaction. What can be done here . Theyre dealing with the masses here. A lot of damage has been done. Theres been molotov cocktails thrown at the Police Officers. Theres been a lot of damage. They want to go home at the end of their shift. And theyre going to respond with as much mass of force, if you will, as they need to not only protect the citizens and the property, but also to protect themselves. But is it excessive, steve . It seems to me that kind of response is aggressive and over the amount that would be needed to disperse this crowd. No, i dont think so. They have the masses. Theyre lining up in the cover of darkness. So, its a very dangerous situation. They dont know where the negative things that are going to come at them, the molotov cocktails, rocks being thrown, guns being fired off within the crowd. They dont know who is there, attacking them. Theyre in uniform. The people that are there know who they are. They dont know those that wish them harm. They cant identify them. We know, mo, that this reporter who spoke to us said there were one or two or three bad apples in the bunch. A lot of people were there, protesting, using their words to describe their frustration. He said there was an angry crowd but only one or two were violent. Yeah. Go ahead. Michaela, i take complete exception with what he just said, that they are so concerned about the rage of the masses. First of all, its not masses that are even out there. There are hundreds of people, which cannot be considered masses in a town like that. And you are absolutely correct. There have been one or two or three that have done anything that is dangerous to a militia that has been formed in ferguson against the people that are trying to peacefully protest, a right that they have to peacefully protest. Its completely excessive. We have reporters on the ground, steve. And you hear the words that mo is using, a militia. You understand that this is a community that is reeling from the death of a teenage boy, a black teenage boy. This is also a community that is racially divided. We know that there are about twothirds of the people in the community are black. Yet theres only three black officers on the force. This is a community in pain. How do we address a community in pain that is also having this kind of scene play out . This was a very unfortunate incident. And we dont know exactly what happened. So the response by the community is unwarranted at this time. Oh, my god we have to understand. Absolutely, they have the right to protest. Are you kidding me . They have the right to say what they do. They dont have the right to loot. They dont have the right to burn down homes, throw molotov cocktails at Police Officers. Its totally absurd. First of all, i want to address dozens of people have been arrested not just a few bad apples. Including two journalists that were doing nothing but charging their computers and responding to what was going on. You do not know that all the people that have been arrested have been arrested for any real reason. The same way a boy the same way a boy was executed in the street for no real reason. So for you to say that what we dont know this, all of your we dont know is to the benefit of the Police Officers. None of the we dont know whats going on do you give to the benefit of the people who are peacefully protesting. What hold on, steve. This is exactly the problem that we have in america, that your assumption is that police are acting in the safety of their o own selves instead of excessive force. And thats the reason why they executed a boy in the street. You keep using the word execute. You dont know what happened. Nobody knows what happened. This is the exact problem. This is the exact prop problem. This is the exact problem, michaela, the sumpgs. Let steve respond. I appreciate your passion, mo. If we cant hear each other, we cant have this dialogue. Im sorry. No, its okay. I appreciate your passion. We have to have dialogue. Thats the one thing all three of us can agree on here. Steve, lets talk about this. Youre addressing a situation where theres clearly a lot of frustration. How do we get past this . Today, we cant see another as soon as night falls, we cant see another situation like what played out last night and what happens played out the night before in ferguson. Does this Police Department have this situation under control . I dont think anything its a very unsettled atmosphere there, to say the very least. So Law Enforcement has to be prepared for anything and everything thats going to happen. But are they . Here is the concern, optics of this situation looks like this is a community that is in dire straits and spiraling out of control. Theres a lot of emotion. We dont know i just heard mo say that he was assassinated. We dont know that. So just like the community thats there, not only are they jumping to conclusions, but youre also jumping to conclusions. We dont know what happened. We dont know what happened to the two journalists, why they were detained. Was it for their own safety . Were they in a dangerous situation . These are things that we dont know. So respond. Wait for the investigation to come out. Why loot before you even know exactly what happened . Mo, he makes a good point in the respect that cool heads need to prevail. The fact is that this investigation needs to happen. I know theres frustration over the fact that the name of this officer hasnt been released, that certain eyewitnesses on the ground havent been talked to at this point. I know theres frustration. And at the end of the day, an 18yearold is dead. Mo, how do we use this anger productively . Sure. How do we you and i both know that anger can only get us so far. Absolutely. Violence sometimes is the way the voiceless express their emotions. How do we pull back from that and have a substantive conversation about what needs to happen in ferguson and many other cities in this country . Cool heads do need to prevail. The coolest heads are the people that are in the powerful position. Right now, that is the ferguson Police Department. They are the ones that should be setting the example of cool heads. But they do not have the training. They do not have the management and they do not have the leadership in ferguson to do that. Instead, they are doing what they have always been doing, exerting their power in a nonuseful way. What the police chief responded to a third reporter who asked him why the two journalists were arrested and his response was, oh, god, as if he doesnt even know what to do at this point. If the Ferguson Police chief, if the mayor, if the heads of this whole operation, investigation dont even know how to respond accordingly, then how can you blame the people who want to come out and protest about this injustice that has been done and blame them for the emotion that is high . Im sick of it and so are they. Steve, do you see we know the governor now has the ferguson has the governors attention. The fbi is involved in this investigation. Do you think state or even federal officials need to step in now that the Police Station there, the Police Department is overwhelmed . No. I think that Law Enforcement, they have to control its ferguson its their case. Theyre going to be responsible for that. Theyre bringing in outside help. You know, listen, the atmosphere there, youve got people chanting in the crowds while Law Enforcement is standing by calmly. Theyre chanting kill the police. Law enforcement standing by calmly. They are chanting, they are rioting and people are throwing molotov cocktails. There are people doing that. Not all of the people in that protest audience were violently or saying these things youre saying. There were a few people, were told, on the ground, were chanting those words you were saying. Not everybody has been. Well, the videos that i heard, it was an entire group of people. And im talking somewhere between 50 and 100 that i could see on the screen. Wrong. Wrong. You sound like a Ferguson Police officer. Im sorry. Outrageous. Mo and steve, this obviously is a conversation that we could carry on for some time. And, obviously, more conversations need to be had about what we can do to stop the violent protests in the evening. We know there are peaceful protests going on in the day. The investigation clearly needs to continue here. Obviously theres a fair amount of healing that needs to happen. Mo ivory, steve kardi an. We appreciate it. Thank you for the passion, both of you. Thats what ukraine wants to know about the convoy of nearly 300 russian trucks heading to their border. Russia says theyve partnerd with the red cross to deliver aid but the red cross says they have no idea what Vladimir Putin is talking about. Ukraine has banned the trucks, fearing they carry troops or supplies for the prorussian rebels. The russian Ukrainian Border is a hot bed of tension, thousands of Russian Troops are still near the border. The russian convoy took off from a military base this morning after stopping for a day, not clear exactly where those trucks are headed. Theyre traveling toward a checkpoint near kkharkiv in ukraine. What happens when the trucks arrive at their destination of luhansk . Good morning, john. Lots breaking here right now. Serious concerns here in kiev that that russian convoy may try to force itself into the luhansk region. Citizens have been cut off from the outside world for nearly two weeks now. They need the help, the humanitarian aid. There are fears that this convoy, as you said, could contain other surprises. For example, weapons to help the prorussian rebels who are engaged right now in an intensifying battle with ukrainian soldiers. Also breaking right now, we know that a convoy of ukrainian aid, escorted by the red cross, is also trying to move into the battle zone as we speak. If that convoy could make it safely, it would be the first aid for these families who have been suffering now without electricity, without water, without communications with the outside world. Meantime, within the last hour, Vladimir Putin is speaking in crimea, pledged that russia will do whatever it takes to stop what he called the bloody chaos in eastern ukraine. The question on the mind of those in kiev, does this mean that that convoy could try to force its way in . Parliament passed legislation, laying the legal groundwork, which would allow ukraine to issue sanctions against russia if they take provocative action. Watching that convoy, to see how far it gets. That may be where the action is today. Thank you so much. Historic firsttime visit by pope francis. Just before he arrived north korea launched at least three shortrange rockets, the last one fired about half an hour before his arrival. Aaron Erin Mclaughlin is live, following all the latest developments. Good morning, erin. Reporter good morning, kate. Three rockets launched while the pope was in the air and two after he had landed here in seoul. At no point was the popes safety in danger. They were shortrange missiles fired to the east. Pope francis plane was coming in from the west. It does illustrate this growing divide between the north and the south. Pope francis today said he wants to help to bridge that. He met with a south korean delegation, including the president earlier today, in which he called for peace and reconciliation, saying peace is the work of justice. And he called on South Koreans to reaffirm their resolve. Now, he has an entire mass dedicated to this issue scheduled for monday. According to media reports, north korea had been invited to send a delegation. That invitation was declined. That, coupled with the welcome that the pope received from the North Koreans this morning seems increasingly difficult for pope francis to be able to get this message of peace and openness across the dmz. Mass evacuation of refugees trapped on iraqs mt. Sinjar is far less likely, thats their wording, to happen. U. S. Military assessment overnight really found that there are fewer refugees trapped than previously believed. But the fight against the militant group isis is far from over. Where does that leave us . Here to discuss managing editor, bobby ghosh and cnn Global Affairs analyst kimberly dozier. Good morning to you. I keep saying this over and over. What a wild change of events, what a different place we are this morning than we were just yesterday, bobby. What do you make of it . The fact that we saw this video of this dire situation, which they believed it really was, tens of thousands of people stuck on mt. Sinjar. Far fewer people up there. The people that are caught up there, they think, are in relatively good condition. So, this Mass Evacuation rescue mission is far less likely to happen. What do you make of kind of the state of play now . It shows you the advantage of having actual eyes on the ground as opposed to sort of cameras in the sky. Yeah. It also shows you when thousands of people are fleeing and youre relying on them to tell you whats going on, they are traumatized, they are in crisis and they are not trained to give you a sort of Fair Assessment of the situation. Also, it shows that the combination of american arial fire power is working and lots of people are getting off that mountain, which is something to take comfort from. It doesnt end the problem. Whats going to happen to these people . Under what circumstances will they be able to go back home in meanwhile, isis still exists, opening up new fronts. Theyre opening up a new front in baghdad. Phase one, to try to get the people off the mountain, is going well. Its only phase one. Thats the big question, i think, kimberly. Ive seen reporting. Weve heard from Top State Department officials overnight. We broke the siege on the mountain. Is the siege of isis really broken, do you believe . They might have broken the siege on that mountain. Thats not the only area where yazidis are under threat. Ive been speaking to yazidi americans who have been talking to their relatives who were captured, who couldnt get away from isis fighters in Islamic State prisons in mosul and other locations. They are talking about horrific conditions. One man is in touch with his sister. She was separated from her husband. She and her children were trucked, along with a lot of other women and children, and described conditions under which the isis fighters come in, take the young women out. Some of them have been raped and then returned. The older women were taken away, never to be seen again, just like the men. And the women and their children dont know whats going to be done to them. And i think this leaves us in a confusing place, if you will, from what the United States role is going for. It seemed pretty clear going into yesterday, bobby. We were going to this mountain to evacuate and help the yazidis that were stuck there. The boots on the ground question, that was going to be debated no matter what. Now it seems that the United States, in terms of their role in the crisis unfolding in iraq, seems a little bit more unclear. What do you think the u. S. Role is . Part of the reason is because the president is slowly backed into this. His instincts are to stay away from the crisis. But the crisis has imposed itself on him. He has defined it in two categories. Were going to get those people off the mountain and protect erbil where theres a large American Population and we have a Longstanding Alliance with the kurds. Were getting the people off the mountain, were now learning. It looks like the isis advance towards erbil at least has been halted. What happens next . Do we simply walk away . Do we say its all over or do we recognize the fact that isis remains a large, clear and present danger across iraq, in multiple places and that if we walkway, theyll come back to that mountain. Theyll come back to erbil. Weve sort of put a bandage on the situation right now. We need to figure out what we do long term. Really, what do you think that is . This temporary effect, if you will, in halting the progress of isis . Its not going away. They seem to only be getting stronger and using what theyve done in iraq as propaganda to get more people to their cause. Is the United States role a smart one at this point, which is were not going to try to take out isis . Were just going to try to stop them and halt them from taking on our personnel in erbil or going up to threaten these folks on mt. Sinjar. It buys time for the Iraqi Government to form for the Prime Minister designate Haider Al Abadi to establish power. That is a huge question, kimberly. Where is the Iraqi Military at this point . Its clearly nowhere. Well, even Prime MinisterNuri Al Maliki is contesting the new Prime Minister designate and is suing to get himself reinstated. He is telling the army to stay out of politics. So, thats a good sign. The question is, what will the shiite militias do. While the u. S. Is helping the iraqi army maintain security, it buys time for that process to shake out. But it also gives the white house time to assess how much do they want to get involved with air strikes . For the iraqi army and them to retake territory, u. S. Officials have told me their private assessment is its going to take american air power and intelligence helping them focus their strikes in a way that pushes the isis fighters back. Got to remember, the isis army is being helped and directed by former baathist military commanders. They have that wealth of experience behind them. Thats why theyre so effective. The u. S. Has to decide how much it wants to get involved in helping iraq push them back. How long is a long term engagement when the president said it could be months that the u. S. Is involved. Thank you very much. Thank you. Were following all of the news out of iraq. A lot of news happening this morning. Lets get right to it. Overnight, ferguson erupted. Now theyre firing into the neighborhoods, into the back of peoples houses. There has been Death Threats to many of our officers. The witness who capture this had video says she also saw the shooting unfold. He turn around, faced the officer, put his hands up and the officer continues to shoot him until he goes down. Reporter this morning over a dozen u. S. Air strikes proving effective. Think carefully before you get into military interventions. I think thats a lesson of the last ten years that the American People have internalized. Good morning. Welcome back to new day. John berman is here. Chris cuomo is off. Overnight, Police Clashed again with demonstrators, fuming over the Police Shooting death of 18yearold Michael Brown. Take a look at this video from a local Radio Station. Authorities used tear gas and flash bangs to try to break up the crowds there after they say molotov cocktails were thrown. Almost two dozen people were arrested, including two reporters who were working, sitting at a Fast Food Restaurant. Officials are doing what they can, they say they are, to stem the confrontations. Missouris governor headed to ferguson again today. President obama being kept uptodate while he is on vacation in marthas vineyard. Now, cnn has obtained video showing the moments after the unarmed teen was shot. Still no identification of the officer who opened fire. This as local police say theyre trying to ensure his safety. Live from missouri with the latest. Ana, it was a long night. It was a long night. Now, john, were seeing what appears to be the calm after the storm, so to speak. We are outside the Ferguson Police station where everything ended last night. We do know that some of those arrest rd still being processed just inside this building behind me. Now on the ground here, people are angry. Theyre still frustrated. All of those emotions continue to boil over. And many are fearful things could still get worse. All this unrest, before it gets better. Overnight, ferguson erupted, perhaps the most chaotic protests and Police Response yet. Angry crowds throwing bottles at Law Enforcement and Police Firing tear gas and flash bangs to disperse them. A tv news crew on the scene runs for cover after a tear gas canister lands directly in front of them. There it goes. Theyre now firing on to the crowd. Ouch [ bleep ] they are firing rubber bullets. Reporter dramatic video shot by a reporter on the ground captures utter chaos. Police advance on the protesters, sending them running in fear. As officers fire rubber bullets and smoke grenades in this residential neighborhood. At least 18 arrested overnight, including two journalists, detained while police attempted to clear out a local mcdonalds, the altercation caught on camera. Lets go. Lets go. We doebt have time to ask questions. Lets go. Reporter this video from after brown was killed captures the heartbreaking moment when a man, believed to be browns uncle, rushes to his lifeless body and is immediately pushed away by police. The witness who captured this video also says she saw the shooting unfold, telling don lemon the details of what she witnessed. What i saw was when the cop and michael were like wrestling through the window. It looked as if michael was pushing off and the cop was trying to pull him in. Then the cop shot a fire through the window. Michael breaks away and starts running away from the officer. The officer gets out of his vehicle and pursues michael as hes shooting the weapon. Michael jerks his body as if hes hit, turns around, faces the officer and puts his hands up and the officer continues to shoot him until he goes down to the ground. Reporter another eyewitness talks about how the officer shoots brown as he goes down to the ground. He was trying to get way from him. Why did he continue to shoot at him . I dont get that part at all. Why was he killed trying to get away from the officer . Even as he turned around and put his arms in the air, he was shot, killed. Assaulting an officer in his car and tried to take his weapon. 2190 said they had more shots fired in the area. Reporter the police chief now says the officer suffered injuries to his face during the altercation and was taken to a local hospital. He is very shaken about what happened that day and the aftermat aftermath. Reporter earlier wednesday, police asked that all protests be held during the daytime. Wednesday nights protests continued as scheduled. Police responded with force. Theyre now firing on to the crowd. Ouch reporter so much of the emotion has to do with the lack of answers in this case. We still dont know exactly what happened in those moments when Michael Brown died. Were hearing from both sides, of course, but no definitive answers. We heard from the prosecutor late yesterday who said there is no timetable for when this investigation will be complete. He says they will do it quickly, thoroughly, but will not be rushed. He says we may not get details until all the evidence is collected, processed and this the handsative grand swrir. Swron, kate . Lack of answers only exacerbating the situation. Ana cabrera there for us on the ground. Jeffrey toobin, thank you for being with us. I want to talk to you really as a really smart guy and an analyst of American Culture here. Look at whats going on in ferguson right now. Molotov cocktails, tear gas on an american street, Law Enforcement personnel that many people look at and say are militarized. You have reporters being taken into custody by Law Enforcement. One, by the way, just tweeted he was never read his miranda rights. What are your general taughts on ferguson right now . That the Ferguson Police are way in over their head, that the governor of missouri needs to step in and get them replaced, frankly. Crowd control is an art and a science and people have been doing it in this country for years. And rubber bullets and tear gas are not the way to do it in the vast majority of circumstances. And theres going to be another tragedy in that city unless Governor Nixon of missouri says we need to get the National Guard there. We need to get people who know what theyre doing, who can calm the situation down because the Ferguson Police just seem completely in over their head. One of the words youre hearing is proportionality, which is a word we were hearing in gaza over the last several weeks. You talk about proportionality, legally speaking, is there a clooe clear line . Its very hard to answer these questions in the abstract. You know, the police are entitled to keep order. But people are also allowed to protest as well. And if you look at the many, many protests that take place in cities like new york, chicago, and los angeles, where people protest even at night and there are not rubber bullets, theyre not tear gassed, there are not reporters being arrested for sitting in mcdonalds. It can be done well and it can be done badly. And crowd control certainly seems to be done very badly by the Ferguson Police. Ana cabrera just reported that the Law EnforcementOfficials Say they will not be rushed in this investigation. There seems to be a lack of transparency and a lack of facts, at least in these early stages. Whats the right timeline here . Has it been too long at this point to identify the shooter . Do they need to come forward with more details about the number of times he was shot and the details of the actual incident . It is certainly too early to decide whether there is any criminal liability on the part of the Police Officer. The fbi and the missouri authorities have to take their time with that. But people need more answers than theyve gotten. Frankly, john, its worse than just no information. What you have is the police selectively leaking stuff that is helpful to the police position. Yesterday you had the police chief saying the officer was hit in the face, which presumably he means to justify the officers behavior. But, you know, thats not only fact out there. How many shots were fired . Who else was present . What were the circumstances . All of that needs to come out sooner rather than later in some sort of organized fashion that is not just leaks to help the police. There have to be some authorities step in that are not the Ferguson Police, because they are very much a participant in this controversy and they cant be the decider and the arbiter as well. Let talk about the fact that is have come it to light. Wolf spoke to a witness on the scene, someone who actually took video from after Michael Brown was shot. You see the family trying to get to him and the Police Holding him off. She also testified that Michael Brown was shot with his hands in the air from several feet away. Now, whatever happened in the car, whatever confrontation there was or wasnt between the officer and Michael Brown if, in fact, he was later shot more times with his hands in the air, how problematic is that for this officer . Its homicide. Its not problematic. Its a crime. Shoot i shooting someone with their hands in the air is, without question, a crime. Now, again, we dont want to make a prejudgment about whether that is the only evidence that we want to make our judgment about. This is obviously a complex situation. There are several witnesses who have come forward. Theyre undoubtedly more witnesses. Just today we were just watching a new cell phone video of apparently the immediate aftermath of the crime. There may be more video out there. But if Michael Brown was shot with his hands in the air, thats homicide and, you know, the officer should be prosecuted. No matter what happened in the car. All right. Lets talk about journalism here, jeffrey. Two reporters were take nooen custody. They were at a mcdonalds, simply charging their computers. Whats allowable and not allowable . Can you ever take journalists into custody like that for simply doing their jobs . You know, we, obviously, were journalists ourselves so we take a special concern when our colleagues are arrested. But, you know, its not special pleading. Its not just our concern for ourselves that when things like this happen. If you look at circumstances where journalists are arrested, it is almost always something that winds up reflecting badly on the people who do the arresting. Obviously, journalists are not above the law. We have to follow the law, like everyone else. But, you know, sitting in a mcdonalds, charging your computer, it is hard to think of any circumstance that would swruf these sort of arrests and, again, this is more evidence of how the Ferguson Police just seems out of its depth and other people have to step in there before more tragedies occur. Jeffrey toobin, great to have you with us. We appreciate your commentary. Michaela . Okay. Some of your headlines right now. U. S. Special ops Assessment Team finds far fewer refugees on mt. Military now backing away from plans that would have amounted to a huge rescue mission on a mountain in iraq, when they discovered far fewer people were trapped there than they originally thought. Thousands of refugees the opportunity to escape these isis militants on their own. Lets get straight to ana koren. They still have incredible times ahead. Reporter without doubt, john. These people, desperate. Theyve come here with just the clothes on their back. Theyve been living in makeshift shelters now for days while this u. N. Camp is being erecollected behind us. Theyre hoping to move within the next few days. The u. N. Has even said they dont have enough tents. This is how dire the situation is. No one was expected the mass exodus, that wave of humanity we saw, cross syria into kurdistan. Now they have to look out for all these people. Food, water, basic necessities, medical assistance. It really is coming in drips and drabs. To pan over here, there is a truck that is run by a local man to give food to children. It was packed with children, packed with people who have gone without meals for days. You look at their faces, john, and they are extremely malnourished. Its highest emergency, highest humanitarian emergency. That goes to really ram home how dire the situation is. Yes, the u. S. Has said the crisis on mt. Sinjar isnt what they first thought. But it is still a crisis. There are thousands of people still trapped on that mountain. The isis militants, they are surrounding it. It is going to require helicopters to fly in, get those people, the elderly, the sick, the young off that mountain to safety. Certainly speaking to the people here, they dont want to say. You know, they really feel that theyve been persecuted for way too long in iraq, the yazidis. They are calling on the International Community to give them asylum. Seeing those little children run behind you, anna, it is a vision. Lets bring in james jeffrey, former u. S. Ambassador to iraq to discuss. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you, kate, for having me on. Of course. I want to we see the video and hear what anna coren is saying from the iraq syrian border. I want to get your take on what we could call a surprising assessment coming out from the u. S. Military since yesterday, that what they found on the mountain is not what they thought they were going to find. Now this massive rescue operation that they were leaning towards is far less likely. What do you make of it . Kate, first of all, this is a success for president obama who ordered in strike and air drops and the crisis certainly isnt what it was a week ago, thanks to that decisive action. Nonetheless, those special forces and u. S. Aid personnel risked their lives. If they say the crisis is over and we can continue with drops then were in a better position. We heard your reporter on the ground, theres still a crisis up there. We have to figure out exactly what is going on and what the administrations next steps are going to be. I think theres a big question. Ive seen some reporting this morning that the eyre strikes have broken the siege of isis. We heard that from a top state official, also said we broke the siege of isis on the mountain. Do you believe the siege, the progress of isis has been broken . Certainly the progress of isis around the country has not been broken at all. It is been halted in places. If it has been broken it shows that air power works. Im always afraid ive made this mistake myself in government, declaring victory too early. Thats an interesting point. You say maybe its been halted but the progress not stopped. With that in mind, ambassador, what do you think the u. S. Role is now . I think there seems to be a bit of confusion, really, i think this morning of what does the United States do now . Kate, first of all, these are always confusing situations, having spent four years in iraq and vietnam as a diplomat and soldier. Thats the way things are. The administration is doing the right thing and should be applauded. Theyre working politically in baghdad to get a new government that will be more inclusive and more effective than the old one and theyre doing the strikes and air drops. They put boots on the ground, at least temporarily, on the mountain to assess the situation. These are good and bold and risky things, and the right things. We need to play this out hour by hour, day by day. How does the political chaos, if you will, or unrest in baghdad, how does it play into all of this . We now have a Prime Minister designate, 30 days that the Prime Minister will be working to put together his cabinet. What do you make of the situation in baghdad and how that plays into the larger crisis in the country . Its key to the entire thing. President obama has been good laying this thing out. First of all, we are capable of using strikes for counterterrorism purposes and if isis pushes into other areas, threatens our own personnel, our infrastructure. But to really roll back isis from these areas where theyve taken over, where they found support particularly in the sunni arab population, we need an effective government in baghdad. Thats what the u. S. Government and, im very happy to say, iraqis of all stripes are working on right now. Im convinced in 30 days well have a new Prime Minister, Haider Al Abadi and a new commitment to try to make this place better and try to roll back these devils. Lets talk about rolling back those devils. I do want to get your take on what you think the United States should do. Do you think the United States, in look at the progress, really remarkable progress that isis has made in iraq and syria, do you think the United States role is to slow isis, stop isis or neither . Right now its to slow it down and then its to work with locals. There are hundreds of thousands of troops still in the iraqi armed forces. There are at least 100,000 more. Its not a question of boots on the ground. Its a question of intelligence, coordination, weapons and air support. These are open areas air support, can be and has been in the last week very effective. If we get an offensive rolling we need to support that. We can see clearly the threat that isis has, the threat of isis for the middle east, for iraq. How much of a threat do you think isis is to the United States . Well, im not the expert there. The attorney swren of the United States and National Director of intelligence. Both have spoken out in the last few weeks this is an extremely serious threat. For your viewers, this is the First Time Since afghanistan and 9 11 where an al qaedalike element has seized territory and basically is trying to set up a government. They will be a magnet for radicals and terrorists from all over the world. And theyre coming to us sooner or later. Do you see a disconnect there, though, in how its described, how much of a threat isis is described as, but the position and the role that the United States is prepared to take right now to take them on . Kate, i think the United States, again, is going in the right direction. I think the president took some bold and potentially risky steps. Given our experience in iraq, given his own reluctance to commit American Forces that he has talked about with the American People, he is going to move slow. I could wish, you could wish hes moving faster. The most important thing right now is that he is moving. Ambassador james jeffrey, thank you very much for your time, mr. Ambassador. Thank you. Of course. Lets take another break. Coming up next on new day, inside politics. Did president obama and Hillary Clinton, did they hug it out . I know that question is burning in your mind. Theyre demonstrating for a fifth straight night over the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. Jay nixon will be back in ferguson today. We understand president obama has been briefed on the situation that continues there. The first day of school in ferguson has now been pushed from today until monday. Overnight in the middle east, violence flaring briefly once again, the fighting erupting moments after negotiators in cairo agreed on a fiveday extension. Hamas, for their part, claims theyre not responsible for the break of the cease fire. Hundreds of trucks, russian claims carrying humanitarian aid, headed for eastern ukraine. Ukraine is protesting the shipment concerned that the convoy could be providing support to prorussian separatists. Sea world profits taking a major dive, Second Quarter earnings coming in at 32 million below expectations. The companys stock is down 31 for the year. Its believed to be fallout from the cnn film blackfish, captive killer whales has provoked violent behavior and caused trainers to die. Interesting. How are you doing, my friend . Im doing great. Not your normal slow august. Lets get in to politics. Lets start, i want to pose a question, local residents, reports out of ferguson, missouri, are asking should residents and should the president be doing more . Were not there. We need to be careful. The president was briefed last night and has issued one statement. He will be briefed again this morning. First africanamerican presid t president. Some in the community are saying why isnt he speaking to the camera . Is that an unrealistic expectation or is it the president s responsibility . We talk a lot about when the president is on vacation, that he takes the office with him. Thats still very much the case. This is about optics at this point. You add the Deputy Press Secretary last night, tweeting about this party in the vineyard that the obamas were at. And yet you have all this chaos in ferguson. They need to find a balance. Should the president go there . Yob. I think they need to do a better job than theyre doing. Other politicians as well. Some controversy in the Washington Post, this story last night saying how silent many politicians have been. Senator blunt issue aid statement. Governor nixon then said im going back there. Politicians tend their reflexes to be cautious and step away from this thing. Its striking that jay nixon, talked as a longshot 2016 president ial contender has been so slow reacting to the crisis, especially since he got such good press reacting to the tornadoes in joplin. Theyre concerned about the optics that come across on the cable news networks. Im surprised theyve been so quiet and dismissive of whats going on in missouri. The press secretary talked about the Hillary Clinton obama hug as all this chaos was taking place in missouri. Trayvon martin verdict, some people took issue about that, but spoke about his personal experience. If the white house changes its position, there is a department of justice review under way. Thats part of the white house caution. Theyre reluctant to speak out during an investigation. Lets go back to the hug. Before the hug last night, this was Hillary Clinton at a Birthday Party for jordan vernons wife. In a new atlantic interview that was timed arne the iraq strike. What is Hillary Clinton trying to do, a lot of people thought. Book signing on marthas vineyard. I have differences with the president but hes my pal. Are you going to hug it out with the president . Absolutely. Yeah. Were looking forward to it. Going to be there tonight. Was it a hard choice to no. Read the book. We agreed. We are committed to the values and interest and security of our country together. Jackie, shes a good pitch woman for the book there. But this ham handed as a president ial candidate how theyve walked through this or is it somehow cynically brilliant, hey, were buddies. But shes also getting separation from the president . Im getting flashbacks to the 2008 primary where it was very clear they had differences. The only difference was that obama was in the spotlight and Hillary Clinton seemed like the past. And now it seems like its flipped. There are old wounds here being opened up, definitely. Listen to this this is dick cheney, the former Vice President , who likes to comment on political affairs. Listen to him on the radio show saying he thinks this book tour has damaged her to the point where dick cheney actually said its not a slam dunk anymore shell be the democratic nominee. The book tour got her in a fair amount of trouble. She hasnt been as smooth an item as one might expect. And, you know, shes i think there are a lot of wanna bes over on the democratic side who are holding back because shes sort of occupying the space as the expected preferred option. Im not at all sure that will be true two years from now. Im not sure Many Democrats look and listen to dick cheney as the prognosticator about democratic affairs. Her play was a smart one, ahead of the curve and hedging her bets. If she runs for president , she knows hes unlikely to leave office with high approval ratings. She is hedging her bets. Sneak out some independents, that was her strat swri with the atlantic interview, jeffrey goldberg. Its a smart one. It shows her Political Savvy not her political weakness. A new poll out showing Hillary Clinton falling. She was the secretary of state. She had high numbers. Comes out on a book tour. Were talking her every day. Guess what, her numbers fall. Shes leading chris christie, jeb bush and rand paul buchlt Single Digits in the same poll in april, she highway doubledigit lead overall of them. Im not going to invest a lot of time on that. Get back on the political sphere, you fall. Chris christie, chairman of the republican governors association. He was in alabama yesterday, helping the republican candidate for governor there, who i dont think correct me if im wrong, appears to be in any trouble this election year. South of the mason dixon line, the governor of new jersey says look again. All over the country, certain predispositions and preconceived notions about folks. As i get to know the folks in alabama better over time, theyll understand that im a pretty conservative guy, have a record in new jersey that is conservative, especially when youre fighting every day against a Democratic Legislature as i have been for the last five years. Mr. Conservative. Yeah. And hes using that you know, usually the chairmanship of the rga, might be in a little bit of trouble as you said. Not a lot of trouble in alabama or mississippi for the governor there. He is trying to bulk up his bona fides. Well see who runs against him in the primaries. In the state, mississippi, who doesnt even have a governors race in 2014. Its not a state that republicans have to worry about. This is all about his conservative credentials, messages that could appeal to the right. And raising a little bit of money. That never hurts. Never. This one will be for berman and kate. If you remember Florida Politics at all, Charlie Crist was a republican governor. Is he running now for governor as a democrat and a republican wants to make a little mischief found an old Charlie Crist recording when he was trying to win a republican primary. Listen. Hi. This is Charlie Crist willing to set the record straight, i oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants, support traditional marriage and i have never supported a new tax or big spending program. Floridians need a consistent conservative governor they can trust. I would appreciate your vote on election day. Mischief but fair mischief, right . The entire campaign, you see the rick scott people doing this. The governor has spent tens of millions of dollars attacking Charlie Crist. Robo call will be effective. He can say, wait, ive changed. But life and politics, not fair sometimes. Ouch. Not fair. Its always tough when your words come back to bite you. Record can be a very difficult things sometimes. Appreciate it, my friend. Thanks, john. Coming up next on new day, another night of violent protests in missouri. Reporters are getting caught in the chaos. Two were arrested last night. Joining us to weigh in on that. Comcast business. Built for business. Welcome back. Protesters and police clash for a fifth straight night in ferguson, missouri. This is over the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager. At least 16 people were arrested in this latest escalation. Thats according to cnn affiliate ksek, including two reporters. Stop videotaping. Grab our stuff and go. Hurry up, lets go. Please dont take our video. Lets go. You see me working. This video was taken by a Washington Post reporter who was arrested in that mcdonalds last night. He and a Huffington Post reporter both say they were aggressively handled. They were cuffed, they say. This raises a whole lot of questions about freedom of the press. When should a reporter draw the line between doing his or her job and becoming part of the story . One man has the answers to these questions. Were joined now by brian steltzer, host of reliable sources. Let me state the obvious here. We are journalists. We care about journalism. These people are colleagues of ours. So when we see them treated in ways that may not be what we consider fairly, we tend to stick up for them. Right. It isnt just about sticking up for friends here. This is about freedom of the press. This is about shining the spotlight on a situation going on in an american city. And its because of the photos and the videos and these reports, in this case, tweets, shared in ferguson. Before they were arrested on wednesday night, two of the best reporters on social media as well as traditional media, writing stories for their websites and medias, sharing what they saw on real time. The Police Officers come into this mcdonalds and threatening arrest. People online were very worried about them once they went silent. Let me read you a tweet from ryan riley. S. W. A. T. Just invade mcdonalds where im working, recharging. Asked for i. D. When i took photo. Again, being on the ground, reporting on the ground is so important for just this reason, because sometimes your presence illustrates a larger point here. Thats actually what reilly said to me about last night. There are reporters who have been in worse situations than me. Having a man large man and the policeman struggling to breathe, yelling for help to the officers. He said the officers ignored those cries for help. He doesnt know what happened to that man. Even though he was in police van, he took the attention and tried to move it over to this person. What it illustrates is what some are calling military invasion on the ground. The photos weve seen, photos were showing of these heavily armed forces. These pictures look like theyre from the middle east but theyre from the midwest. And in some ways its a consequence of a decade of wars that the United States has fought. Some of this equipment is now coming home. Were seeing that. Because of social media in particular, people can share photos that they havent seen before. A picture from iraq. On the right, picture of ferguson. Those sometimes can be misleading and taken out of context. There is no real comparison to make between these two stories and two places. Those images are very provocative. They make tensions rise. The moment of the confrontation there with the officers. My hands are behind my back. I said im not resisting. Im not resisting. At which point one officer said youre resisting. Stop resisting. Thats when i was most afraid, more afraid than of the tear gas and rubber bullets. So where does a reporter draw the line . How far should you be willing to push things . They appeared to pack up their stuff and be ready to leave. Some are saying they should have packed up sooner, suggesting they were trying to pick a fight. I dont think thats a case. These are both well respected reporters trying to do their jobs. Thats the sentiment that will come up. By the way, theyre not the only reporters who were arrested. One other reporter, a sit sten reporter, local official named antonio french arrested la of the night, believed to still be in jail. His main job is to be a local official, representing the public. I think he has been one of the best eyes and ears on the ground, posting so many vines and instagrams on the scene. So we have to keep in mind in situations like this nowadays, we need both, traditional media and social media. Citizens accounts from the field. We learn from both of those these days. Look, we need eyes on the ground. No one is saying the reporter shouldnt obey the law or a special set of rule. Police are in the tough situation. We need to be there to show whats going on so these discussions can be had. Be sure to join brian for reliable sources 11 00 am on sunday cnn. Next hour, we will speak one of the reporters who were arrested. Next up for us on new day, the son of an american aid worker with ebola said he thought at one point his mother might not make it. One of the american aid workers who contracted the ebola virus in liberia is getting stronger every day, according to her husband, david writebol, who spoke to cnns elizabeth cohen. Each time i talk to her i get a sense her voice is clearer and brighter, so im imagining that shes getting stronger and she tells me she is Getting Better and feeling stronger. Still very weak and still not necessarily its moving in the right direction. Nancy writebol remains in isolation at Emory University hospital she received the experimental drawing zmapp. Her husband david is under quarantine after returning from africa but showing no signs of the virus. Nancys son Jeremy Writebol joins me from atlanta. I saw you watching your dad there. Have you had a chance to talk to him as well . Ive had an opportunity a couple times to chat with dad on the phone and he seems to be doing very well. Ive been encouraged by his health and progress and glad to have him back in the states again. Lets talk about mom. Does she have any idea how many people have been sending prayers for her and sending good thoughts along the way, been aware of the flurry of news, her name has made . Shes embarrassed by it, i think. She definitely knows that there are tens of thousands, if not millions of people praying for her and is very grateful for just our nations reaching out and concern for her care. Youre there in atlanta. Youve had an opportunity to spend some time with your mom. I want to you walk us through that in a second. Your dad was saying shes getting stronger, albeit still weak. How is she doing today . Today shes doing well. Im looking forward to going to see hadder in a little bit. Each day since shes been at emory theres been progress forward in her condition and care and shes getting stronger and stronger, which is something we really praise the lord for. The consensus is that this serum worked for her then. I think it was part of it. I also think that a bigger part of it was the preventative and protective care that emory has given her, just to help her work through this virus, the medical staff there has been incredible, theyve been compassionate, professional, and thats been really the key i think in helping mom recover. Can you give us some insight into what that treatment is like . How are they caring for her . We know that shes in this isolation unit. We know the cdc is just around the corner, so we know they are very well equipped to deal with this. What does that treatment look like . I this i in one hand its the presence of the doctors and the nurses that are there with her 24 7, monitoring her care, getting her the right fluids and things to be able just to help her body fight this virus. According to your dad, your mom was working in the decontamination unit, actually teaching people how to avoid getting sick, yet she got sick. Yes, that was just a mystery to this whole situation of how she helping doctors decontaminate and prepare themselves for going in to serve other ebola patients and to come out and cleanse themselves, where that happened and how, we dont know, but that was a way that mom was serving there in liberia. Can you give us an idea of how the decision came when she had to choose to say yes, i will try this never before tested on humans, this serum, this zmapp. Tell us about that struggle to make that decision. I really dont know much about the decisionmaking process there, and how mom and dad worked through that. I know she was very sick and needed some help and that was made available and they went forward with it. Your parents have traveled the world over as missionaries doing tremendous work and we know theyve known of the risks when you travel in some of these parts of the world, there are rare Infectious Diseases that you have a chance youre at risk of getting. Did she or your dad ever express concern . I think early on when it became aware there was ebola in western africa, there wasnt even a possibility at the hospital that they were working and serving at, the patients could be received there. There was a heightened sense of concern something might happen in that way but we never anticipated this at all. You never imagine this until like you said, this family, youre inn the midst of it, mom is in isolation at Emory University hospital in atlanta, dad is quarantined, you say hes doing good and hopefully youll have both of your parents without all of this protective gear back in your arms where you can tell them how much you missed them in person. Jeremy writebol thank you for joining us. Hopefully we stay in contact with you as your mom continues to get her strength back. Thank you very much. Well take a short break here on new day. Breaking overnight, chaos on the streets of ferguson, missouri, the most violent night yet, protesters and police clashing, s. W. A. T. Teams using tear gas and rubber bullets. Journalists arrested, the anger and unrest is not going away. Witnesses coming forward only to cnn, what they say happened the day mike brown was killed as the police chief claims the cop who fired the shot was injured in the altercation. U. S. Military personnel have left the mountain where thousands of iraqis were stranded. Those advisers saying a military operation to save them may not be necessary. So whats next . Your new day continues right now. Announcer this is new day with chris cuomo, kate bolduan and michaela pereira. Welcome to new day, its thursday, august 14th, 8 00 in the east. John berman is here, chris is off today. All eyes are on ferguson, missouri, this morning, where a fifth night of protests against police is perhaps the ugliest night yet. Chaos as police unload tear gas against those throwing they say molotov cocktails. This video that youre looking at here is from a local Radio Station there. Two officers were hurt and 16 people arrested, including two reporters who had been working in a Fast Food Restaurant at the time. Missouris governor jay nixon headed to ferguson again today. President obama has been briefed and cell phone video obtained by cnn shows a Family Member being kept abe from Michael Browns poddy after the shooting. The officer remains unidentified right now still because of safety concerns. We get back to cnns ana cabrera live from ferguson. What is it like this morning . John we are just outside the Police Station where all of those protests came to an end just four or five hours ago. You can see it is calm and quiet here, a break in the unrest this morning. We learned that the police chief here in ferguson will be meeting with the parents of Michael Brown today, along with a representative from the naacp, as well as representative of the u. S. Justice Departments CommunityRelations Division who is also here on the ground in ferguson, this as the governor comes to visit here again for a second time in less than a week, and we head into another day of uncertainty. Overnight, ferguson erupted, perhaps the most chaotic protests and Police Response yet. Angry crowds throwing bottles at Law Enforcement and Police Firing tear gas and flash bangs to disperse them. Tv news crew on the scene runs for cover after a tear gas canister lands directly in front of them. Reporter there it is, theyre firing onto the crowd. Ouch [ bleep ] theyre firing rubber bullets. Reporter dramatic video shot by a reporter on the ground captures utter chaos. Police advance on the protesters, sending them running in fear. Stop throwing reporter as officers fire rubber bullets and smoke grenades. 18 arrested overnight including two journalists detained while police attempted to clear out a local mcdonalds. Lets go. No time to ask questions. Reporter new cell phone video from just after brown was killed capturing the heartbreaking moment when a man believed to be browns uncle rushes to his lifeless body and is immediately pushed away by police. The witness who captured this video said she saw the shooting unfold telling don lemon exclusively the details of what she witnessed. What i saw was when the cop and michael were like wrestling through the window, it looked as if michael was pushing off and the cop was trying to pull him in, then the cop shot a fire through the window. Michael breaks away and he starts running away from the officer, the officer gets out of his vehicle and pursues michael as hes shooting his weapon. Michael jerks his body as if hes hit, turns around, faces the officer puts his hands up and the officer continues to shoot him. He tried to get away from him. Why did he continue to shoot at him. Exactly. I still dont get that part at all, like why was he killed trying to get away from the officer. And even when he turned around and put his arms in the air he was shot multiple times. Reporter multiple witnesses tell a similar story, while Police Maintain brown assaulted the officer in his car and tried to take his weapon. Officer shooting out of ferguson, 2190 just said they had more shots fired in the area. Reporter the police chief now says the officer suffered injuries to his face during the altercation and was taken to a local hospital. Hes very shaken about what happened that day, and the aftermath. Hey, hey, ho, ho, they have to go reporter earlier police asked all protests held in the day tame but wednesday nights protest continued as scheduled, Police Responded with force. Theyre firing onto the crowd. Ouch reporter now because things are so heated here on the ground, we are seeing a trickledown effect. We now have learned that the start of the school year has been postponed because of all of this. Classes were supposed to start today but now have been postponed to start on monday, in the hopes that this situation can stabilize or settle down. Many here fear that things could still escalate. We know the Group Anonymous which has been active on social media with a following calling for a national day of rage today, urging people all around the country to come out and protest in solidarity with the people of ferguson. John . Thanks so much. Lets bring in the attorney for Michael Browns family, Benjamin Crump. Mr. Crump, you will remember also represented Trayvon Martins family. Mr. Crump, thanks so much for the time. Thank you. Of course. We were just hearing from our reporter on the ground, ana cabrera. Shes hearing of a meeting between the brown family and the police chief. What. Can you tell us . Not aware of that meeting taking place. We are trying to set a meeting with the members of the Justice Department. Does Michael Browns parents want to meet with the police chief . Theyve been waiting to hear what happened when their son was killed in broad daylight, and theyve been waiting very patiently, but they havent heard any explanations. So they would be open to a meeting if the police chief made himself available . They would be open to a meeting with the police chief to tell them why the officer shot their son in broad daylight. They are very emotional about this, as any parents would be, kate. And thats very understandable. What would they like, you say thats what they want to hear from the police chief what happened that day. What would they like to say or what questions do they have for the police chief if that meeting does take place . They want to know how can you justify shooting their unarmed 18yearold son multiple times in the middle of the street in broad daylight. He had a tshirt, shorts, and flip flops on. Its obvious that he didnt have a weapon. So like all the people in that community, many people around the country, they are just in shock that this could happen to an unarmed teenager in broad daylight. This makes no sense and they feel theres no way it can be justified. And some of the shock were also seeing play out in terms of anger and outrage, we saw really the streets of ferguson, missouri, erupt overnight. I know youve seen some of the video that weve been playing on our air, the reporters have been showing. What does the family say . What is the family making of the violence that they saw overnight . Well theyve been asking that people be responsible and protest peacefully, but not to do irresponsible things and not to be violent. That isnt a appropriate legacy for Michael Brown jr. What we need to do is make sure were concentrating on getting justice for michael, not just being angry, and so theyre sending a message to everybody who truly cares about Michael Brown and his family, lets try to be peaceful, and responsible in our protests, because understand, kate, these people saw, in that community, what happened to this child, and they saw his body laying out there on the ground for hours, and it was very troubling, because many of these people know this family, and they are asking themselves, if it can happen to him, it can happen to my child, and it is very troubling and especially with no transparency. They will give the fact, and say an officer is injured but they wont tell the family how many times their son was shot. Now, how is that fair . As you mentioned, the officer being injured, that is just coming out, that came out yesterday that we learned the police are saying that the officer involved was treated at a hospital for a swollen face. They do maintain that a fight of some kind took place. Do you leave open that possibility . Well, all the witness accounts said that the officer tried to confront michael, and so they all have said that, but we dont know what happened, but what we do know, kate, is this. There is nothing Michael Brown could have done to justify him being executed in broad daylight, and this is the worst Police Shooting i have ever seen and ive seen a lot of them, and it is very troubling, and we have to get answers and it has to be transparent and thats why were calling on the Justice Department and the attorney general to do an independent autopsy, because the trajectory of these bullets are going to be a very important factor in trying to understand this case, because everybodys looking at this case, theres color blind curiosity on this case. Everybody wants to know, not just black people, white people, hispanic people, anybody who is looking is saying how do you justify killing a kid who is unarmed in broad daylight, multiple shots. As horrible as it is, some of the answers that his parents may be seeking may come from an autopsy. Ive seen some reporting that his body has been released to the family. Is that the case . If so, what is the family going to do . Do you have an independent autopsy already set up . Yes, maam. But we want the federal Justice Department to do an autopsy thats completely independent. So st. Louis Law Enforcement agency has done their autopsy, but the family and the community are very distrustful, because they dont feel that in the past, things have been transparent, even with the officers name, you know, the first opportunity to show everybody theyre going to be very open and transparent, they say no, were not going to give the officers name. That has been the big question of the Police Department withholding the identity of the officer. Do you, does the family know the identity of this officer . The family knows nothing, kate, and we want to know the identity of the officer, because we want to know what is his history . Whats in his jacket, as they say. Has he had any issues before like this, has he been through coaching and sensitivity training, has he been through use of force training, these are going to be incredibly important questions when you get down to the crux of the matter of why Michael Brown was executed in broad daylight unarmed. The big question, of course, is that, what happened that day. Those are the answers that his parents deserve, the community deserves. You have also been there for days now. Youve seen the anger. Were seeing the outrage play out on a daily basis. At this point, what do you think will calm people down . I think transparency, kate, and understand, we want to make it loud and clear, we asked everybody, please, respect the rule of law. We dont want anybody to get hurt over trying to stand up for Michael Brown and the tragic way that he was killed. Transparency is the key. People need to have confidence and trust that theres going to be an independent investigation and due process for Michael Brown and his family will get answers so we can say the system works equally unfair for Michael Brown as well as the police. We want equal transparency but right now its been onesided. The Police Officer got hit, and they say they only tell us how many times Michael Brown got hit with bullets. That is not transparency. Benjamin crump, thank you again for your time. Thank you. Well continue to stay on top of the story as we have. The violence breaking out but as he said keeping the focus on finding out what happened to that 18yearold boy, what happened that day saturday, get some answers for his family. They need that at the very least. Thats exactly right. Lets look at our headlines, 13 minutes past the hour, to the middle east where a new fiveday ceasefire appears to be holding in gaza despite a brief round of air strikes. Israel responded to rocket fire moments after a truce was announced. Hamas claims they are not responsible. Meanwhile negotiators in cairo are expected to resume talks for a longterm truce. Pope francis is in south korea this morning, the first trip by a pontiff in some 25 years. Just before he arrived, north korea launched five short range rockets, the last one fired about a half hour before the popes arrival in seoul. During his fiveday trip hes expected to hold mass with families of victims of the ferry disaster. North korean escapees, and also former sex slaves. Good old conventional wisdom taking it on the chin in a new study on salt intake. Researchers say Healthy People can eat about twice the amount of salt thats currently recommended for a daily diet, and that consuming too little sodium can actually be harmful to your health. Oh, this is helpful. The study found theres a sweet spot for salt intake between 3,000 and 6,000 milligrams a day. The research was published in the new england journal of medicine. What do we do with this, folks . Not too much, not too little. Just right. I think that we need to have a modicum amount of balance, no . Oh, michaela, that is the easy answer that no one can stick to. Please. We do tend to binge on one or the other. Were a funny group, us humans. Well continue to ponder that, us humans, in the break. Coming up next on new day, well have much more on the escalating situation in missouri. Well speak with one of the two reporters that were arrested last night in ferguson, but first, we will talk with the pentagon spokesman about what is next in iraq, with a live report from a camp just inside syria, where thousands of yazidis are seeking safety, seeking refuge. Com welcome back, everyone. The possible evacuation of thousands of refugees under siege by isis in Northern Iraq, that evacuation now on hold, after a u. S. Military assessment found far fewer yazidis stranded on mt. Sinjar than previously thought. The pentagon says a rescue mission is less likely to happen. Still, we want to make this career, the humanitarian crisis is far from over. Cnns ivan watson has seen this crisis firsthand from the air, from the ground. This morning hes in a yazidi refugee camp in the syrian iraqi border. Good morning, ivan. Reporter good morning, john. Thats right, the humanitarian crisis far from over, and spilling across borders. We are in syria right now, this is a refugee camp that sprang up in the last ten days. 5,000 families im told living here, and theyre getting some supplies. You can see tents perhaps in the background, getting some food, some medical care but everybody you talk to, under every tent, there is a horrific story of people who fled their homes terrified, who lost loved ones on the way, and during a march through the desert to escape, some of them lost loved ones as well. As one woman i talked to said who hadnt seen her son, he went missing, she called him, and an isis militant answered the phone and told the family whoever we capture we kill, so this is a phenomenon now spilling across borders, numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Ive been talking to rasheed and ismael. Everybody here is yazidi . Yes. Reporter youre all from the sinjar region. Yes. Reporter did you see the isis fighters . Yes. Reporter you saw their flags . Yes. Reporter can you go back home . No, no. Reporter why . Because its dangerous. Reporter its dangerous . Yes. Reporter youve seen people hurt . We dont want to stay in arab country because cant live in any country, other country other country iraq, not have anything, just fighting. Reporter thank you, gentlemen. Just coming back to you, john, people here are saying they cant even live with arabs anymore because they feel theyre in danger and this region is so prone to conflict. John . Ivan, as you say, every person on the run, every person there had their lives turned upside down, every person there living in fear. Ivan watson on the syria iraq border, thanks so much for being with us. We want to talk about the situation on the ground, where ivan is, but also on mt. Sinjar, where the fighting has been raging with u. S. Air strikes over the last few days. We bring in Pentagon Press secretary rear admiral john kirby. Thank you so much for being with us. The New York Times reporting this morning, talking about the siege, the situation on mt. Sinjar, the isis siege of mt. Sinjar. They say that the siege is broken. Have you broken the siege on mt. Sinjar right now . Well, i dont know that we would characterize it in exactly those terms, john. What we do believe is that thanks to the air strikes we conducted on the mountain on isil positions and thanks to the thousands and thousands, tens of thousands of gallons of water and meals that we provided through air drops that we have greatly alleviated the humanitarian crisis on the mountain, and facilitated, frankly, the departure of tens of thousands of refugees from the mountaintop, that they were able to get out safely with Peshmerga Forces supporting them. I dont know that i characterize it as a siege broken but certainly we dont believe the humanitarian crisis up there is near as bad as what we had feared it would be and therefore we dont believe we need at least for the time being to mount any evacuation mission. It is less likely or not likely at all that you will mount this evacuation operation. Thats right. You did say that the air strikes there have been successful on mt. Sinjar. Unt doesnt that indicate to you air strikes might be successful against isis positions in other parts of iraq . Well, we continue to look at the possibility for air strikes in Northern Iraq, for two reasons. One, and the president was clear about this, to protect u. S. Personnel and facilities in and around erbil. The majority of the air strikes have been for that purpose but also to help alleviate that humanitarian crisis in Northern Iraq particularly around the mountain. We believe the strikes were able to disrupt isil activities and their firing upon refugees. They were effective, disruptive. Where else could this be effective right now in this conflict . Were constanting assessing the situation on the ground. You dont want to get ahead of future operations. We have Assessment Teams in iraq, we still have two joint operation centers, one in the north erbil, to get as best a view on the ground as we can. Our direction has been clear from the president on the two missions that we need to be conducting inside iraq right now. I appreciate you dont want to speculate on future operations right now, you dont want to tip your hand but this is evidence at least that some kind of operations are effective in your own words. Is it possible Something Like this might be effective against the isis militants across the border in syria . Im not speculating about future operations. Our focus is protecting u. S. Personnel and facilities and alleviating the humanitarian crisis in conjunction with the two missions we have taken effective strikes against isil positions, isil artillery, mortar positions and vehicles, and were going to continue to look at the situation on the ground, and we have the authority, the president s given us that authority to strike if and when we think its necessary to do so, inside those two missions. How would you characterize the condition of these isis militants inside of iraq . Well, look, theyre not just in the north. Theyve got strongholds further south and the middle of the country. Again our focus is mostly in the north. Where we have hit them, we believe we have been effective. We have rdisrupted their activities, made them rethink what theyre doing up there, no question about it. Elsewhere they remain a significant threat. Nobody is underestimating the b barbarism and the sheer brutality of the guys and what theyre doing. Ultimately this san iraqi fight to fight. We can support them a little bit, and we will, but were not going to become the iraqi air force. This is a fight that they need to fight. Were going to try to facilitate that fight. I appreciate it and dont mean to keep hammering but you keep saying where we have hit them it has been disruptive. Why not hit them in more places . I know you dont want to answer that. I asked to you assess the isis forces on the ground. What about the kurdish forces, the peshmerga right now. Have their fighting capabilities been improved since u. S. Air strikes came into play . Oh, i think so and i think for a number of reasons. First of all theyre good fighters in general. The peshmerga are professional, skilled fighters but the air strikes that weve taken have not only helped take some of the pressure off of them, its bolstered their morale, and as been reported, we are facilitating the provision of supplies and equipment to them, mostly through the Iraqi Security forces that have been providing supplies, weve been transporting supplies so theyre being reconstituted, resupplied. I think air strikes have taken some pressure off of them and also boosted their morale, not that this is a force that needs a whole lot of morale boosting, theyre good fighters. The wall street journal reporting some iranian advisers have been involved in the area right now where this fighting is raging in the north. Can you confirm that, and would you welcome the involvement of the iranians at a certain level . I cant confirm iranian involvement or positions up there. I really dont have that kind of information, john. What we have said in the past is look, we know that iran hasek wits. We know they have shia militia fighting in iraq. Our message has been to iran and all of iraqs neighbors, lets not do anything to further enflame sectarian tensions inside iraq. As bad as it is, for those people who want to help, lets help in such a way that we dont make the situation worse. Admiral kirby, always a pleasure, appreciate it. Thanks, john. Next up on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a Strong Police presence in ferguson, missouri, as protests turn violent for another night. Well speak to a reporter who says he was roughed up and detained under a false arrest. Start a team. Join a team. Walk to end alzheimers. Visit alz. Org walk today. Welcome back to new day, violence youre seeing right there raging overnight in the streets of ferguson, missouri, over the shooting death of an unarmed teenager, Michael Brown, by a Police Officer. This happened on saturday. Police released tear gas and flash bombs on protesters who reportedly threw molotov cocktails. 18 people were arrested during the chaos including two reporters. This video taken when police entered the mcdonalds where he was charging his phone to do some work. The other reporter arrested ryan riley with the huffing post, both join us by phone. Gentlemen, can you both hear me . Yes, i can hear you. Thank you so much. So ryan, first tell me, lay it out for us, what happened last night to you guys in the mcdonalds . Sure, essentially the mcdonalds is located just down the street from where a lot of the protesters are taking place, a place where journalists can plug in their laptops and phones and recharge and get wifi and get a bit of work done. We were sitting there, i saw slowly the number of Police Officers all dressed in s. W. A. T. Uniforms moving down the street and closing off the street, taking a few photos inside the mcdonalds when the officer walked into the mcdonalds. Eventually they ended up essentially deciding they were going to shut the mcdonalds down because we were spread out and had our laptops spread out you need a little bit of time to get our things together. We were also trying to record because this is sort of an extraordinary moment you had s. W. A. T. Team officers inside a mcdonalds shutting it down, an image youd want to get for your news reports and at that point the officers became upset that we were still filming and while we were trying to pack, and this is all over a very short period of time that we were placed into handcuffs, we were given a countdown of how long we should take to actually pack up our things. So then wesley, why then were you arrested . What did they tell you . They told us very little. Essentially i asked specifically under what charges am i being held, he said for trespassing, so we were trespassing as patrons of a mcdonalds where we both made purchases and had been working for a long period of time. The police i guess now have jurisdiction over private businesses. Well, if they were shutting it down, maybe they were doing it for safety. Im not trying to give them any credit but trying to figure this out and you are as well. Im hearing, so play it out, continue this story for me. So then you were arrested, youve got the handcuffs on or handcuffs they use in these kind of scenes and youre taken to the Police Station. Then what happened . Well to rewind to address that for a second, you know, i would love all of this went down as you can see the video in less than two minutes. There were not any protests within two blocks of us. I would love an explanation from the Police Department about what the eminent risk to our safety was, to be forcibly removed from a mcdonalds while we were trying to pack up our bags. We ended up standing outside the mcdonalds for 15 minutes in the handcuffs. With he were in the same location so what was the Public Safety . I would love for the county police chief, whose officers were doing this, to come on someones show and explain to us what this eminent risk to our own safety was. Believe me and theres been a lot of irresponsible speculation about what happened, oh, we were somehow trying to provoke this or we were somehow trying to, you know, we werent following instruction. This is a situation where we are trying to record what was taking place which was extraordinary and the attitudes the officers had toward all of the people in the establishment, while we were complying with their tightly timeregulated rules for trying to get our things packed up. I think the countdown for me started 45 seconds and quickly went down to 30 and we had all of our things spread out throughout the desk. It takes a while to actually get, you know, two computers and all of your charging equipment into a bag. Believe me, weve been talking about it this morning, ive written many a story from a mcdonalds, recharged many a computer out in the field from a mcdonalds. Any journalist knows you go any story that allows you to charge your devices. We know the scenario. I want to get your take, we spoke to, cnn spoke to the Ferguson Police chief overnight about this and he actually said that he didnt know at the time who the arresting officers were but said that you were two really nice guys, you had a good conversation and pointed out oddly enough hed been interviewed by both of you prior to the attest. Seems a tis connect between the police chief and the guys under his control theyre not under his control and thats the point. Yes, thats the other, i mean the officer who banged my head up against the glass was a st. Louis county officer who refused to identify himself over a dozen times after i was arrested and all of the officers who were surrounding him from multiple jurisdictions refused to any way to give me any sort of name or badge number or any information about the person who assaulted me so its just completely striking that all of these people would just sort of disregard our request for simple information about what happened to us. And wesley, i want to get your take on this. This happened to you guys overnight. We know that you guys are fortunately okay, youre not under arrest anymore. You were released from your holding cell that you were in, but youre going to get it from both sides and Joe Scarborough, one of our friends over at msnbc this morning, he said, and im sure you heard it, i want to get you guys to respond to it, he said you should have listened to the police and should have just moved on. Was that a possibility . Well i would invite joe ska are brough to come down to ferguson and come out of 30 rock where he sits his starbucks smugglely. Invite him to come to ferguson monday afternoon having tear gas and rubber bullets shot at me, mothers and daughters cry, a 19yearold boy crying, he had to run and pull his 21yearold sister out from a cloud of tear gas, i invite Joe Scarborough down here and to do some reporting on the ground, then maybe we can educate the conversation about whats happening here. Frankly as a reporter on the ground, im certainly not perfect, not that i couldnt change little pieces of what ive done but let me be clear about this, i have little patience for talking heads. This is too important. This is a community, a community in the United States of america, where things are on fire. There are things on fire, this community is on edge. Theres so much happening here, and instead of pitting more reporters on the ground we have people like Joe Scarborough running their mouth and no idea what theyre talking about. Do you regret anything that happened last night . I regret the police were heavyhanded. I regret they felt they could infringe on my First Amendment rights to videotape them. I regret when i said my bags fallen, i need to adjust it, i regret that because so much happened as i looked at the coverage, reporters on the ground, so many people are doing good work, so many stories needed to be told, the tear gas, the way the riot police were acting, the local assemblyman arrested still in custody. My job is to be a reporter. I wish the police would have done their job and allowed us to do ours. If theres any regret that you became the story rather than covering the story. Do you feel the same way, ryan . Yes, its really frustrating. We gathered a lot of good material that i would have loved to get out there yesterday, had it not been for the fact that i was detained and whisked away because apparently i didnt pack up my bags quickly enough, some cops got a little hotheaded. Its amazing. Its a distraction honestly and completely unnecessary situation. Were trying to do our jobs here, and the attitude that the officer who we dealt with was extraordinary. Im angry, frankly. You sort of understand some of the frustration honestly that i think people feel, based on the mentality of at least some of the Police Officers that are on the street and obviously they have a very tough job. We dont want to take away from that. Im sure theyre under a lot of pressure, probably dont have as much sleep as they could but the idea that we posed any sort of threat because we werent quickly enough packing up our bags is ludicrous. Well continue to try to get more information of how it transpired in terms of what the position of those Police Officers or that s. W. A. T. Team was, were going to be continuing to seek docomment fr the ferguson Police Department and all of the agencies involved. Ryan, wesley, thank you very much for jumping on the phone, thanks for your good reporting. Well continue to look for your pieces on the Washington Post and the Huffington Post. Thanks for your time, guys. Thanks. Thanks. Were lucky we have guys who care that much on the ground there. They care. Say what you want, maybe more facts will come out in the altercation, but to care that much about reporting the story is important and were lucky to have them there. Its not easy to be in the middle of it. Theyre there to do a job. Cooler heads definitely need to prevail. The protests, the clashes shouldnt happen. Cooler heads need to prevail as Benjamin Crump says, as the family of Michael Brown say, but regardless, these guys got caught up in something and i appreciate that. What i also appreciate, too, is that sort of outsiders, coming from outside of the community, are there, and are that impassioned about the story. Thats an important thing, and thats why we need to have journalists on the ground to show whats going on, because people think oh, its just the Community Getting riled. No, its not. Its a good thing we have good news organizations, the Washington Post and the Huffington Post standing by their reporters. Well look back at how the 60s Counter Culture transformed america with a man who had a very intriguing view. Moderate to severe is tough, but ive managed. I got to be pretty good at managing my symptoms, except that managing my symptoms was all i was doing. When i finally told my doctor, he said my crohns was not under control. He said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohns disease. And that in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. And many achieved remission. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. If youre still just managing your symptoms, ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. So i can reach ally bank 24 7, but there are24 7branches . Its just im a little reluctant to try new things. Whats wrong with trying new things . Feel that in your muscles . Yeah. I do. Try a new way to bank, where no branches equals great rates. We moved up and lived right down the street from the psychedelic shop. People were growing their hair long, wearing beads, playing music on the street. It was an incredible environment at that point at the beginning. Thats when it was just like one big giant family. That was a look at tonights episode of the cnn emmynominated series the sixties sex, drugs, rock n roll. They say if you can remember the 60s you werent there. Our next guest is famed photographer bob gruen, not only remembers the 60s but responsible for photographing rock legends, john lennon, tina turner. He joins us now, what a pleasure to have you here. Thank you for having me. You got a view so very few did. What was your experience . And its hard to sum it up in a minute. How was your experience of the 60s different from what we may have seen . Well i was there and i took part of it, the turn on, tune in and drop out, i did that and lived with a rock n roll band and it was a lot of fun. You did it from behind the lens. You were the guy in the room who wasnt really in the room but was in the room. I was there. I did document it. I always felt there was something important i needed to show to other people. Show and tell was my favorite subject and i like to see exciting things and tell people about them what was the story you were trying to tell . The excitement that was going on, you know, like when bob dylan played in newport with the rock n roll band he was expressing rock n roll is the new folk music of america. How did you gain trust and gain access so easily . By not bothering them, not intruding, and being part of what was going on and gaining trust, not exposing them and work with them and show things in a good light. You know, those of us that were born after that time but have very much felt its influence often try to find ourselves trying to understand what made that decade so special. You talk about freedom. You talk about the revolution that was behind some of the music. What is your sense . In growing up in the 50s after the Second World War we were imbueed with the spirit it was a free country and i remember being 5 years old and not wanting to go to a flag raising at camp. I said its a free country, i can do what i want and i think that was an important feeling that we all had and still have, and then in the 60s it kind of just grew a lot more and people wanted to experiment and they were free to do so. Do you find messages in todays music . Messages . Yes, do you find the same kind of spirit alive in todays music or is it a different kind of expression or rebellion . Its a little different nowadays, people are going back to the jimi hendrix records, the janis joplin records. Buffalo springfield, you know, very serious message, and another thing was like when bob dylan wrote songs out of the folk music era but putting it to rock n roll, people started to believe they could write their own songs, you didnt have to have a song writer and the singer. The singer could write his own songs and say what he wanted to say. You look around at the images we have on the wall and im sure it takes you back and you can tell the story behind each one of them. I remember being there. And you can probably remember the sounds and the smells. I remember what it sounded like and felt like, yes. Do you have favorites . Its like choosing your favorite child, i cant do that but some of my favorites, bob dylan at newport, john lennon at the statue of liberty because people relate to the statue of liberty as personal freedom and think of john lennon in the same way. Youre still going to rock clubs . Oh, yes. Four or five times a week i hear. Im sorry to say this on cnn i dont really like to watch tv. I like to go out. I hear people say that, shocking as it might be to hear it while on tv. People have to get out there and experience life. You absolutely do. Thank you for being here. Tremendous life youre enjoying, the sixties sex, drugs and rock n roll premieres tonight 9 00 a. M. Thanks so much, bob.
