Hes on the run as a warrant has been issued for husband arrest. The charge, mass murder. And major questions are facing russian president Vladimir Putin as to his next move. Nick pai ton w Nick Paton Walsh has the latest for us. We are waiting to hear a big word from president putin. Hes been silent despite the fact the former president is gone in a days from a ruler to a man on the run in the south of the country. A remarkable transformation over the weekend here. But we spent some time inside the private residence where we saw examples of the unbelievable wealth he apparently accumulated. The ousted president is. Ed for mass murder and on the run in the south probably seen leaving a private house there. Ukraine is still on the streets watching a new government form, mourning the dead and enjoying a strange period when the people are the only real power around. Moscow has been pretty silent so far. The expresident and the United States hope it stays out militarily u. That would be a grave mistake. Reporter they are digest in the collapse and the wealth of the former president here at his personal retreat. A day at see what many can buy if you dont have anything sensible to do with it. It may be their former owner who is behind the bars. He didnt even drive these cars. In the end he fled in the president ial helicopter. And not in this, a massive river boat for partying. Outside fascination at the life he led and they could only look in on while their country stagnated. Inside, gifts from guests. Months ahead when ukraine comes to terms with a troubled economy and ask where did all the money go, here is part of the answer. President s own vodka. We later got inside his house. A bizarre, enormous empty mansion. It was vacant. Everything laid on, even a tunnel linking the houses across miles and miles of grounds. The luxury literally never seemed to end. In his bedroom, one bell for sex, one for alcohol. It was presumably a joke, but how he lived to the people whose money this was isnt. Such a bizarre atmosphere inside that empty house. No one there seemed to have enjoyed it while he was there, but those missing billions people were now increasingly focused upon. Ukraine said it needs 35 billion, some of it hopes from america to see it out of the economic crisis thats coming to him now. Behind me people are mourning on the square here. A somber atmosphere still. The focus will be on the hard grind ahead of getting this country back on its feet. Thank you for what the look at the past. The question will be how does it get affected Going Forward . The question is obvious and right in front of your face. The e question for us will be in the u. S. , how do you respond . This is what we could see happening with putin. The first, putin could mess with ukraines money to put it blankly. All this began when the ukraine backed out of a deal with the eu to take billions of dollars from russia as well as fuel, oil and gas. What could he do now . He could withhold that money and keep leverage with what happens Going Forward. The second option would be russia could put boots on the ground in ukraine. Putin did it before in georgia in 2008. This it time he could be doing it in defiance of what was requested by the u. S. That puts it on president obama to put teeth behind his talk. Think red line politics from syria. And then the third option, what putin could do is encourage secession in the ukraine. The eastern half is russian in culture and language. Putin could try to break that part off for himself. That would be unacceptable. Not just to the people there, but to the International Community as well. So these are the different options were going to see how it unfolds. Well talk with Christiane Amanpour about which ones are realistic. Thats ground. Work of where we are at Going Forward. Breaking news from egypt where much of the government has now apparently submitted its resignation starting with the Prime Minister. Its unclear who else has joined him. Its unclear their reasons or when. Those resignations will take effect. No word if the interim president has send the resignations either. For some customers, but maybe its a start. No more slowing down for those customers of house of cards. Its buffering, its got all these speed bumps. This is a deal that would connect comcast and netflix directly and take out the middle man. Thats going to be better for you and your viewing pleasure. We know that netflix is on the rise. They have a third of the traffic in those pipes that carry all that stuff. Theres only so much room. That means the rest of the folks that dont have this deal are going to see the buffering, bufrg. Or someone is going to have to spend billions of dollars to make the pipes bigger. So this is scene as the beginning of other agreements. We expect more agreements. So hopefully they will figure out how all of us can get this. The question is here as the Cable Companies are building bigger pipes, who is going to pay for it . It costs a lot of money. Cable Companies Pay for it . You know the answer to that. Come on. Answer the question. Most people think eventually this means the more you use, the more youre going to pay. Does that mean they didnt plan ahead . They didnt anticipate this much usage . All new technologietechnolog gobbling it up. They are trying to figure out who. We are going to pay. Once you get some scale to the competition, the prices will start to come down. As they are ramping up and deciding who is the best inpra structure wise, were going to pay. Were stuck with netflix interruptus. It happened to me over the weekend. You gave a really good analogy a tap with water. When were streaming video or using the stuff that you can on the internet, you want to turn on the switch and the lights go on. Or turn on the facet and the water comes out. I have to pay more for something, but heres l l thing, the more water you use, the more you pay. So how are we going to figure out what the pricing structure is for me for how much i use . Why are you so fascinated by this . You know youre going to pay more to get more. When you pick your speed online, you pay more. How we view the internet, we still view the internet as free and for everyone and its kind of changing. Youre paying for some of your news website subscriptions. You cant get all access all the time for free. Its changing that relationship. We want to know when i turn on the tap, its a full stream and not a trickle. They get you now. When i signed up with whatever time warner cable, which speed do you want. I went cheap because im tight as two coats of paint. Has it been a success after all . Here to offer her take is a reporter for the boston globe. She just got home. Youre wide awake because youre still dealing with the time change. Yeah, i was going to say this is what 27 hours of travel that included 6 security checks looks like. You look fabulous. Thank you for e geing up and coming in. You just returned from sochi. Whats your big lasting impression from the games would you say . I think i walk away oddly surprisingly impressed that they pull pulled it off. A masterful job i, i dont think it was intentional of setting a low bar of expectations because when i arrived there, it was frightening in some respects at how little was finished and then you thought, i dont know how they are going to accomplish this. I dont know how they are going to pull this off. I walk away saying, wow, they actually did this and most of it ran exceptionally smoothly. When you say you were surprised that they pulled it off and because they set the low bar, going in, everyone was afraid of a terrorist attack. Everyone saw construction ongoing and continued to happen while folks were there throughout the games. Some of the runs werent great, the weather was a huge factor. So would you say as you compare to other olympics it was a success or simply the bar was set so low that russia pulled it off . I think it was a success outright. Its very difficult when youre comparing to past Winter Olympics like vancouver, for example. Every Winter Olympics has its own set of challenges. It takes place in its own bubble with vancouver, transportation was a huge problem. Lets not forget that warm weather was also an issue in vancouver. I think overall, it was a success. The venues were spectacular and as advertised. And there were some issues with runs and weather and security was looming over the whole event, u by think of the people i talked to there, they were having a good time. The competitions were engaging and thrilling and all the things you want to see out of a sports competition. And people felt they got to experience a culture that was different and new and exciting in some ways. I dont know if we saw a real version of russian culture, but people got the olympic spirit and the olympic experience in the process. One of the interesting story lines coming out of this olympics is the big names going in didnt necessarily medal. That didnt necessarily pan out. It was the lesser known athletes that we really saw shine, by and large, in this olympics. Youre also specifically talking about team usa. They are facing headlines back home like team usa disappoints, falls short, collapses, what do you think of how team usa did . Is that a fair portrayal of how they did over there . I dont think its that fair a portrayal. Shaun white did come in fourth. Shani, davis did not perform as expected. But there were some of the big names that did come through. You had ted ligety winning the gold and for me was one of the most thrilling performances of the games, 18yearold mckayla winning in the womens slalom competition. You had outside of the americans other teams doing well. Was it a poor games for the americans . You could say that, but it didnt live up to expectations, but there were some names that are going to be coming out of here that were going to look to in the future that will be exciting for fans down the road in olympics and International Sports competition. I guess looking back, especially all the fears going in, by and large, Nothing Happened in terms of the terrorism that was expected. Everyone can say at least we can say at the very least the players and the fans, their families, all were safe as they concluded the olympics. Its great to see you. Welcome home. Thank you. Joining us to talk about this and many topics, congresswoman from florida and chair of the Democratic National committee deb debbi Wasserman Schultz. Thank you for coming in. When you look at the reality, were in 2014. Were in a midterm election. You know what its like on capitol hill . Is there any chance in your mind theres going to be anything significant coming from capitol hill this year . Well, it wont be for lack of president obama and Congressional Democrats trying. At the end of the day, if the republicans in the congress continue to want to do everything they can to stop anything that president obama tries to do, then were going to have an election about that and the two contrasts and the new different paths and visions will be contested in the election and well see where the American People land. That happened in 2012 and they said they. Ed to make sure that we focused on fighting for the middle class and working families and job creation. Thats what president obama is going to try to do on his own. Doesnt it seem like both sides have given up . Its not unusual in an Election Year we focus on politics, not really on legislating. It seems earlier than ever. Look at the president s budget. Hes going to take heat for dropping this modification for Social Security benefits. Im not giving up. Democrats arent giving up. If your question was do i think anything is going to happen, my answer was its not going to be because of the democrats lack of trying. We need willing partners on the other side. The republicans have only wanted to be obstructionists. Thats why we voted to appeal the Affordable Care act instead of working together to try to iron out the kinks and fully implement. Even the governors in town this week have said the Affordable Care act is the law and its here to stay. The other side is the reason we had all the votes is because you actually didnt work obamacare the way you traditionally would. You forced it through and left them no choice but to vote it and the reason that youre going to have trouble working together is youre too antagonistic. Its kind of like you set them up to disagree with you and then say its your fault. How many times has president obama extended his hand across the aisle, said lets sit down and work things out and put things in budget that our party has issues with too get the republicans to understand we want to find common ground. The tea party extremists, sadly, that have been allowed to control the direction of the Republican Party have a strangle hold on their party. Its prevented them. I have been in office 21 years. 13 of those i have been in the minority. I understand it cant be my way or the highway. Obviously i support my partys agenda, but you have to put aside differences, figure out where you can agree so you can move forward. Members said the president has not been good about developing culture with the other side of cooperation. Hes been too stand offish. I dont know that. There are countless times president obama has said lets sit down and Work Together. Its the republicans that walked away from the grand bargain who instead of focusing on the number one issue thats important to job creation and getting the economy turned around that they focus on doing everything they can including shutting the government down. Just to derail giving people access to quality, Affordable Health care. When you talk about the grand bargain, which is never going to happen until exchange in bargain, one element was what i mentioned. Change cpi. Washington saying theres a change how Social Security benefits are calculate d. Has the president explained to democrats why hes dropping that from the budget this year . I havent had a personal conversation with the president about it, but i can tell you that my from having observed and been involved in the process, that is a tough thing. As is the entire question of how you reform Social Security and safety net programs like medicare. Unless you have both sides willing to put some skin in the game. Willing to set down and said were going to spend our Political Capital to make tough decisions together. But you have to have both sides willing to do that. If president obama continually puts himself out there with and as a result the republicans take shots at him and continue to bash us. When he put cpi in his budget last year, they criticized him for proposing to cut benefit when is thats an idea their party has previously embraced. Whether or not thats a good idea needs to be discussed and debated together. But to continue to put out only one side put out the tough side and the other take hot shots, that doesnt make sense. Whats going to change . You have things to worry about. What do you think changes the dynamic . We know the game. Its difficult to get things done. Its one based on hostility. The people are against both sides. Whats going to change . I think whats going to change it is an election. Were going to have to have another election. Maybe a couple elections until its clear to the republicans that the path that they have chosen, the path of extremism, the path of doing nothing but obstructing the president s ability to get stuff done and choosing not to work with him is going to be rejected by the American People. In the meantime, we need to keep trying. We need to keep showing how we would move the country forward if we had willing partners to sit down and work things out. To Work Together to find that common ground. A lot can happen between now and november. From your perspective, how are the chances looking that democrats could regain control of the house. The way its described to me, its not likely u. We have tremendous opportunities across the country. Were going to pick up seats. Its very clear that a lot of constituents across the country have buyers remorse from the tea party they elected in 2010. The Republican Party has essentially voted in lock step to shut the government down, to follow ted cruz and the tea party off the cliff. We dont all have to agree on everything, but people do want us to sit down and Work Together. In the town Hall Meetings i have in south florida, people say, youre all to blame. They are fed up and sick of government and losing their confidence that we have the ability to get things done that are meaningful. They havent been shown any evidence otherwise. Exactly. Thats why we have to on our side to continue to do our best to Work Together. Sadly, the republicans who actually used to be willing to do that are retiring because they are frustrated. The Republican Party is in a civil war. They are in a battle for what direction their own party will go in. They are beating the heck out of one another. Its hard for any of them to focus on working across the aisle. Well see what happens with their civil war and hopefully it will shake itself out and well elect some willing people on their side to come to the table and work with us on job creation, on getting the economy turns around, on building more opportunities for the middle class so people can work hard and play by the rules and event an opportunity to succeed and achieve their goals. Get the economy stronger and you dont have to battle ab the cost of living adjustment to Social Security because you have the stainability. A lot of issues on the table. Thank you for being here. Coming up on new day, an amendment to an arizona law could make it legal for a business to refuse service to gays and lesbians and other people. Is it a way to defend religious freedom or a license to discriminate . Well talk to someone who helped draft the new amendment. Its a debate, you get in it on it. Heres a proposition for you. Should it be legal for a business to refuse service to gays and lesbians because of religious believes . This is the substance of an amendment passed by the legislature and the legislature says e yes. Those against it say its a license to discriminate. Lets debate. Joining us from washington, d. C. Is an attorney for the Alliance Defending freedom, which was involved in drafting the amendment. Counsellor, thank you for joining us. Its a pleasure to be here. Let me ask you this counsellor, the main proposition for why this is okay in your opinion is that its an existing law and just an extension of a right that already exists. Explain. Theres been a lot of lies and misinformation spread about this bill. And what this bill this bill is not about denying people services. What this bill is advocating for is basic freedom, ensuring that everyone is respected and that the government is not allowed to force or to coerce or compel anyone to violate their believes or to go against their conscious. This is basically to keep the government from discriminating against people of faith. Right. But fundamentally, what it allows, the mechanism is to allow a business own tore refuse to do business with somebody on the basis of it ed ofing their religious believes. If they do conduct that business. So for example, if i come to you and say you sell flowers. I want you to sell flowers for me for my marriage to another man. You can say no, correct . Theres a difference. Theres a basic difference between denying someone a cup of coffee or a piece of pizza or selling someone a pencil versus someone to use their creative ability to create a message to support an event, to support an idea that goes against their believes. Theres a big distinction that government should not force us to ever use our business, use our talents to go against what we fundamentally believe. Theres a big difference between selling a pencil and forcing someone to draw a mural that portray this is. Think about we would not force a muslim to participate in a koranburning ceremony. Is this is america and we should be able to live freely and not be forced to endorse ideas. Counsellor, tell me youre not analogizing burning a koran with gay marriage. Do you see them as the same thing . In this bill, it will not deny anyone any service. No one will be kicked out of a restaurant or denied a cup of coffee or piece of pizza. This it ensures that everyone in the state of arizona, these are common, fundamental freedoms that inherent in history. And this bill simply preks those freedoms and allows people to live according to their faith without the government saying what you can and cannot believe. It allows people to not do business with gays is what it allows. Your organization has a history of trying to hedge the ability to deal with gay marriage and gay rights in the country. All somebody has to do is google your organization. So lets just be open and honest about it. Why is dealing with gays or gay marriage out to a substantial burden of someones religion . Whose religion does that burden . Youre misunderstanding the point entirely. In our photography case, elaine is a wonderful, Young Christian photographer and started her company. She is more than willing to take pictures of homosexuals. She will take passport pictures, anything. What she will not do is use her ability as a photographer to go in and promote and endorse an event she doesnt agree with. How is that a substantial burden . Lets say youre a christian, which im sure most of people youre designing this law would be. How is it a substantial burden to my christianity to take photos of a gay marriage . If im against it, i dont marry another man. It vooilts your religious freedom if the government comes in and forces you to go against, to act in contradiction to what you believe. It doesnt just apply to christians. A jewish baker, you cant make them provide pork sandwiches for a wedding reception. In america the couple in new mexico, theres so many people willing to provide photography to use their e creative expression for that event. Why cant we respect and advocate for tolerance of all viewpoints regardless of whether or not the government agrees with that viewpoint. But arent you arguing against tolerance . Tolerance would be as a Business Owner, i dont e know why you need the law at all. If you dont want to do business with somebody, yaw can. The Gay Community in general is not a protected class under the federal law. Its not like race or religion where you cant discriminate. So you dont need this law unless you need to enforce intolerance. It seems pretty obvious thats what youre doing. I dont think people have even read this bill. This bill were talkin religious freedom has been on the books in arizona since 1999. For religious organizations. This bill simply closes loopholes to make sure it matches the federal law. I want to be really, really clear on this. It would no way allow anyone to deny someone services. It would not allow them to kick them out of a restaurant or deny them something. It simply wont force artists to create or promote a message to force them to be in a parade or be in an event or endorse that with their business, it wouldnt allow them to do that because of the fundamental respect. If i ask you to cater my gay marriage k you say no . Under this bill that no one would be able to deny anyone services. They couldnt say no to a cup of coffee. Can you cater my gay marriage . Theres a lot of examples and it would depend on what that persons religious believes were. The jewish baker, we could not say he would have to be compelled to provide pork sandwiches for an event. Thats because religion is a protected class. And lgbt is not a protected class. Thats why you cant say to the jewish bake thaer he doesnt provide pork sandwiches, but lgbt is not protected. Why dont you own that proposition and say, yes, thats what my organization is about. Were trying to protect christians who feel this belief and thats what this law is about. No, thats absolutely not what this law is about. Its act protecting religious freedom and protecting the dignity of every single person. And allow i cant understand why you would endorse the government and say, yes, the government can come into my life and compel me to create art or create something that violates what i sincerely believe. This is not a country where thats something we have ever stood up for. If youre against discrimination, if youre against the government saying what you can and cant do in terms of going against religious belief, you should be for this bill. I understand your point, but i dont understand the example under the law as it is right now. Youre extending a right where it didnt exist before to have intolerance. But the government isnt telling anyone to do business with anybody. The Lgbt Community is not a protected class. We have to leave it there. I respect you coming on to make your arguments. This will not be the end of this law. I hope you come back so we can continue the debate. I would love that. Thank you so much. What do you think . Let me know. Newday. Actor alec baldwin making headlines for an article in the new york magazine, taking on media, photographers, former colleagues, executives and other actors. Saying hes done, done with public life. Here to tell us more is the contributing editor from the new york magazine. Good to see you. Tell us the tale. It came out of the blue, sort of a mutual friend of ours who happens to be a journalist asked me if i would be interested in talking to a person about the media and maybe doing a person of this persons view of the media and it turned you want to be alec baldwin. It was very unusual. Not through a publicist. He genuinely wanted to understand what happened to the media such that he arrived at this point where his career had been, you know, seemingly tarnished. He clearly didnt want you to interview him, he wanted to tell the story. We talked about the best way to do this. I said tell me your story and ill edit it into something coherent. Tell us what happened at msnbc. Tell us about the paparazzi. Tell us everything thats happened to you this last year. The whole story is him trying to understand whats happened to him. Whats your big take away. He goes through the incidents that happened publicly. His show with msnbc, his falling out with msnbc, constant issues with the paparazzi. The title of the piece is goodbye public life. Whats your pick take away. Is he done, done . I would describe it as a guy whose trying to break up with a girlfriend and its very painful for him. This is a relationship hes had for years. Its had its ups and downs but now hes done hes saying. He admitted it was a difficult process. Not easy for him to make a clean cut like this but hes trying to. Whether he can do it what does that mean, hes trying. Cant you just say im done . Thats true. I think he also wanted to settle some scores and have the public understand as he, you know, kind of a farewell letter. Well see if its an actual farewell about what happened to him. You got to know him. Full disclosure, i do know him. The point is this, now that you know him a little bit, do you think hes out there crazy, homophobic, racist any of these labels thats been put on him or has he violated the rule of messing with the media and paying the price. Heres what i think. I think that he admitted in the story that hes the kind of person who may rise to a dramatic moment when given one. When a camera is in his face he reacts. He knows this reaction isnt positive for him. Maybe theres a third option, none of the above but i dont think that hes a bad guy at all. A lot of people disagree with you and say hes making consistent homophobic remarks. He tries to take it in your piece intelligently in terms of putting his position forward. Do you think it will sell with people. Will they think differently of him . He comes off angry in this piece. He is angry. Theres a side of him thats bitter. He said im bitter. Im a human being, i feel about whats happened. I wish it didnt happen. The big institutions like the Huffington Post and msnbc is giving credence to tabloid media the sort thats coming after him. Tmz, he has a long history with these guys. Always antagonizing him. He makes a good point. If you look whats going on twitter right now the amazing amount of hate. Maybe he deserves it but he calls it hate, incorporated. This is the new way of people having in public, they get constantly attacked, constantly who you are on your worse day is who you are. I agree with that. The question is he asking for it . He knows he kind of that this isnt a Good Relationship for him to go back to that metaphor and thats why hes trying to figure out how to end it. Tuning hes ending it . Thats something that i cant answer. I hope he does because for his own sake because i think hes a great comic actor. A lot of people even if they dont like him, what they see of him recognize the guy is amazingly talented. His focus on theater. Hes not done acting. He wants to focus on theater less than showbiz. Right. It shows how angry the social media environment is that an angry guy has to back away because its way too angry even for him. Lethal combination. My therapist once said whats the common factor in all these scenarios . Yourself. Thats true. Hes coming to grips with that to some degree. Interesting. Its an interesting story. Thanks very much. Appreciate it. Very interestingly told too. Coming up on new day, cracking down on racial slurs in the nfl. 15 yard penalty if you use the nword on the field. You like that idea . Is that the way to change culture . What does an apron have to do with Car Insurance . An apron is hard work. An apron is pride in what you do. An apron is not quitting until youve made something a little better. What does an apron have to do with Car Insurance . For us, everything. Bellman welcome back, captain obvious. Captain obvious yes i am. All those words are spelled correctly. Stubborn love by the lumineers did you i did. Email . So what did you think of the house . We learn more about his life on the run even escaping through a door beneath the bathtub. Jason collins making history. First openly gay athlete to play in a major professional sport. The reaction this morning. Your new day continues right now. Welcome back to new day once again. Its monday, february 24th, 8 00 in the east. We begin this hour with breaking news in the ukraine. Ousted president , Viktor Yanukovych now a wanted man for mass murder, but his whereabouts remain a mystery. Meantime ukraine trying to restore calm after those deadly antigovernment protests. An interim president has been appointed and the country is set to vote for their new president in may elections. Nick peyton walsh is in kiev following all the latest developments. Whats it like today, nick . Reporter kate, so much happening here right now. Weve all been waiting to see what russia the big overarching neighbor would do. Viktor yanukovych last reported leaving a private residence in southern ukraine. We heard from the russian Prime Minister who said he doubts the legitimacy of the government here, the russians arent that safe here but interestingly we havent heard from Vladimir Putin, the main man in russia who calls all the shots. Many wondering what hes going to say. The u. S. Warned russia not to get involved. Behind that you cranes are digesting the remarkable scenes of wealth at the residence of the former president , Viktor Yanukovych. The ousted president is wanted for mass murder and on the run in the south, seen leaving a private house there. Ukraine is still on the streets watching a new government form, mourning the dead and enjoying a strange period when the people have the only real power. Moscow has been silent about losing its main ali. The United States hopes it stays out militarily. That would be the grave mistake. Reporter ukrainians digesting the collapse of their past and the wealth of Viktor Yanukovych. Many see what money can buy if you dont have anything sensible to do with it. Soon it may be Viktor Yanukovych who is behind the bars. He didnt even drive these 50s bentley, whatever this is. An American Army jeep. In the end he fled, of course, in the president ial helicopter. And not in this, a massive riverboat for partying. Outside fascination at the life he led and they could only look in on while their country stagnated. Inside, gifts from guests. Months ahead when ukraine comes to terms with a troubled economy and asks where did all the money go, here is part of the answer. The president s own vodka, even the president ial waste gets gilt. We got inside his house. A bizarre empty mansion. It was gawdy but vacant. A tunnel linking the houses across miles and miles of ground. Luxury never seemed to end. In his bedroom one bell for sex, one for alcohol. It was presumably a joke but how he lived to the people his money this was isnt. Whats remarkable was just seeing how little signs of life there really was. All these riches but no one there enjoying it much and these images are really in the minds of people behind me. The square is a scene of mourning, flowers on the ground here as the government tries to explain to you ukranians the mess they are in. Saying they are bankrupt. The money is messing. They need 35 billion this year and next to keep the country afloat. Some of it potentially from america. But behind all that the ongoing drama of the manhunt, the man who was five days ago a president now a fugitive in southern ukraine. Nick peyton walsh, thank you. In other news one of the worlds top drug kings behind bars. Some controversy brewing because the arrest was made in mexico but the u. S. Is fighting to have Joaquin El Chapo guzman face justice here in the u. S. Were learning new details about the legendary criminal who spent 13 years on the run after breaking out of prison. And on the key u. S. Wiretap that led to his arrest. Cnn ted rollins is in chicago with more. Ted . Reporter good morning, chris. Thousands of families here in the u. S. And in mexico have had their lives ruined by this man and the scee cartel. After eluding capture for dozens of years how did authorities nab Joaquin El Chapo guzman, the worlds most ruthless drug lord . Focusing on five wiretaps, the dea, u. S. Immigration and mexican officials tracked guzman down to this hotel in mazatlan, mexico. In the end, it was a single wiretap linking authorities directly to where guzman was staying. Room 401. Federal prosecutors want him extradited to face trial in the u. S. I do think the biggest problem in our convincing mexican authorities to send him back to the United States is that hes a mexican national, most of his killings have taken place on mexican soil and certainly a lot of mexican families would like to see him tried and incarcerated in mexico. Reporter guzman is known for his evasiveness. Police last week raided one of his compounds when he was still inside. The drug lord fled through a secret door beneath a bathtub disappearing in a network of tunnels connecting him to his other six homes. Dubbed public enemy number one by chicagos Crime Commission a title once held by al capone, inditmentes have been filed in four states. The drug king contributed to the death and destruction of millions of lives. He escaped from a prison in 2001. There is corruption in that country. And i would ask that the mexicans consider extraditing him to the United States. Reporter federal prosecutors including prosecutors here in chicago would love to have a crack at guzman. Its unclear whether or not that will happen. One thing to consider, kate, mexico does not have the Death Penalty and they dont extradite to countries that are planning to enforce the Death Penalty so that could be a factor in this decision make being process. Ted thanks very much for that. 12 minutes of playing time and a permanent place in history. Last night in los angeles Jason Collins became the first openly gay athlete ever to play a major professional team sport in the u. S. , starting off his new ten day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, collins managed two rebounds against the lakers. Lets go live to los angeles. You were there. History in the make. Reporter that is true, kate. When you suite in the room with Jason Collins you cant miss him. Hes seven feet tall. He made his biggest impact on the court yesterday. As he took the court early in the second quarter, Jason Collins became the first openly gay athlete to play professional sports in the United States. Collins signed a ten day deal with the Brooklyn Nets before the game. Thats amazing that the nets was willing to open up and allow him to come out and still showcase his talent even though his Sexual Orientation may be different than most. Reporter collins was a free agent when he made the announcement. Many wondered if a team would pick him up. I always try to stay positive, and try to control what i can control, and its my training. So i always try to focus on that, focus on being positive and staying ready. Thats part of being professional. Reporter now that the opportunity is here, colin says his head is in the game. Its about focusing on the task at hand and not thinking about history or anything along those lines. Reporter jason kidd said theres a familiarity with Jason Collins. They played together. Also hes a professional. He knows this game. At the end of the day thats what the nets want to do, they want to win games. As collins is making history on the court, michael sam is doing the same on field. At the nfl combine in indianapolis the missouri defensive end said he wants his athleticism to speak for itself. It is what is it and i just wish you guys will see me as michael sam the Football Player instead of michael sam the gay Football Player. Reporter collins agrees and says life is much better. I dont have to hide who i am. I can be my normal self. The past ten months has been incredible. Reporter and collins seemed very relaxed. He says it felt good out there playing. He said it felt good. He needs to work on learning the plays that the nets have. One other note. He played under the number 46. Moving forward hes playing under number 98. Thats the reference of 1998. Matthew shepard was a university in wyoming. He was murdered in a hate crime and something that Jason Collins said needs to be remembered. Important point. Thank you for bringing that up. I wonder when were talking about him coming out, you think it matters the stature of the athlete that comes out as gay in terms of sending a message or it doesnt matter. You mean does it matter more . I like Jason Collins, im happy for him. Its bold move. Do you think if its a big star would it matter more, mean more . I dont think so. A first is a first. I agree. Its interesting with Jason Collins is one guy in terms ever his skill level. Michael sam could be a big star. I wonder if it makes a difference. Time will tell. You know what time will tell, horrible segue to make this nice weather youre seeing in the northeast will change. Why . The calendar says winter and it seems the weather will prove it to us. Another round of bitter cold in some parts of the country, how cold will it get . Its a matter of science so for that we have to go to the meteorologist who is known as indra petersons. I cant stop laughing. You know what news i have to deliver. Its a monday. We know its already colder and only going to get even colder. Thats the problem here. Lets talk about yesterdays temperatures. Lets reminisce. It felt good. New york was 64. Almost in the 70s. This is what were looking for today. Not bad in the northeast, 30s instead of 50s in the upper midwest thats where temperatures are starting 10, 15 degrees below normal. Lets look at it a different way. Heres the temperatures below freezing or at the freezing mark. Tomorrow seeping further south. Wednesday that cold air goes to the northeast and even down into the southeast. Nashville your high on wednesday below freezing at 31 degrees. I think that paints the picture right there. Its not the only thing. Were talk being about some snow tuesday night wednesday morning new york city. Inch an and a half. Same thing for boston. Warmer than freezing so were talking about some rain, maybe one to two inches. No more scowling. Just own it. Were still in the mid. Winter. We have a few more weeks to go. Thanks to that groundhog. Welcome back to new day. Last nights spectacular olympics closing ceremonies being called a triumph for russian president Vladimir Putin but with ukraine on the brink of civil war after the ouster of its president the spotlight still on putin to see how hell react. More challenging situation than the olympics. Christiane amanpour joins us from london. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for the opportunity to help me understand. If we start with this premise that the olympics were a success, there was no major terror event that many of us were concerned about, cant control the weather but otherwise it was good, does this mean anything for projecting the situation forward for russia in terms of how they conduct themselves in the ukraine . Well, look. People were astounded not just by the terrible bloodshed in the streets of kiev but why would putin at the end of a very successful olympic game be either allowing it or in the know that this kind of crackdown was going to come and many are saying its because just like with the winter games he wanted to show a very strong russia, a russia that is equal on the world stage, a russia that may not be a super power in name but believes still is and ukraine plays heavily into that picture he has of russia and its empire. He still wants a strong russia and the ukraine and former soviet republics play into that. The u. S. Said two things. One ukraine is not about russia and the u. S. , and they have now said to russia stay out of the country during this period. I want you to tell me whether or not you believe either of those two statements remember going to hold weight . Reporter well the first one is really, really very important to focus on, that business of what will putin do. Hes had talks with the german chancellor, angela merkel, secretary kerry had talks with the Russian Foreign minister. The message from the west is clear and simple, stay out, do not send in military forces and we must agree on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of ukraine and allegedly putin has agreed to that, according to the germans after their read out from their phone call with putin. So hes apparently agreed to that. Lets not forget, however, there are thousands of Russian Troops in the ukraine right now because the crimea is where the Russian Naval fleet actually does reside in the black sea area. It doesnt look at this moment putin is planning on any sort of military intervention. This would make this situation a thousand times worse and they have given their word to the west that this wont happen. As for is ukraine, you know, somehow indicative of a split they the eu, u. S. And russia. This has been a problem. What eu is saying to russia its not a zero sum game you can have your dealings with the ukraine, can you have a close relationship with ukraine but guess what we can too. The two are not mutually exclusive. The majority of the ukrainian people want a closer alliance with the west. What happens theres a secession, and two what does the u. S. Do if russia violates the agreement of intervention . Lets just go general with intervention. Maybe its military. Maybe its what they provide to the Government Forces there. But what do you do with those two prospects. Secession. Right now russia doesnt know who is in charge or whats going to happen. They played their cards not very well in this regard having put so much pressure on ukraine and now they see it explode in a way they had not foreseen at all. So what the United States and europe have to do is some very concerted and hands on long term diplomacy. Right now the europeans are talking about a massive aid package to you crane because lets not forget thats one of the problems in ukraine it needed so much economic support, and russia is the one thats been giving to it in a drip, drip kind of way, been giving that support in terms of financial and other kind of aid. The europeans are trying to and the top european Foreign Policy woman Catherine Ashton is over there today and they are trying to figure out some kind of Major Economic aid package and how to keep this place rolling forward. Thats whats going to have to happen, very concerted, hands on, dont take your eye off the ball diplomacy to make sure it doesnt split and can be put back together in a way that satisfies ukraine, satisfies russia, and satisfies the eu and the u. S. Theres an example the former National Security adviser of the u. S. Has just written an article saying finland provides a very same model for russia and ukraine. Finland has a relationship with russia that is both independent and very close ties. Important to find an analogy right now because people are going to look for a workable construct as a solution. Thanks for thing in site. As always great to say. Coming up next on new day imagine enjoying dinner at a restaurant and then finding out Carbon Monoxide was leaking the whole time. The nightmare played out at a new york mall leaving a man dead and dozens sick. This is the third incident this month. So why it is happening so often . Also this. At night and when its cloudy, we use more natural gas. This ensures we can produce Clean Electricity whenever our customers need it. All right. Welcome back. Time for the five things you need to know for your new day. At number one, ukraines ousted president now wanted for mass murder. A warrant has been issued for Viktor Yanukovych. The parliamentary speaker is now the president. Jason collins is the first openly gay man to play in a major sport. The pentagon planning to shrink the u. S. Army to its smallest force since before world war ii. The New York Times says defense secretary hagel is expected to reveal that plan today. Paula deen apologizing and mounting her come back after seeing her career come back after racial comments she acknowledged she made in the past. And say adieu, farewell, so long to sochi. The olympics are over. Russia led the way with 33 medals over all. The games were capped off with an elaborate closing ceremony own t and the torch was passed to south korea for the 2018 olympics. A father of two was killed inside a new york restaurant because of an apparent Carbon Monoxide poisoning. More than two dozen people were sickened, including First Responders. This is one of multiple incidents just this month that left many hospitalized from the deadly gas. So is enough being done to keep people safe . What do you need to know . It seems like common sense we should have a Carbon Monoxide detector in our own homes but even people who are vigilante are not thinking about it when they are in public places. If its anything we can learn from what happened in long island over the weekend most of us need to recognize the signs that theres a problem. This morning clues in the deadly Carbon Monoxide accident at a busy new york mall. Steven nelson found unconscious in the basement of the legal seafoods he managed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. 27 people, seven of them First Responders sent to hospitals with symptoms of Carbon Monoxide exposure. Its news you dont expect to here. The restaurant didnt have a Carbon Monoxide detector, huntington town Officials Say new york state fire code doesnt require them in restaurants. We always assume something is in place, but, you know, the reality is there isnt anything in place. This is sort of a sad wake up call for everyone. Officials say the deadly gas spread through the rested rants basement because of a leak in the flue piper the water heater. Responds in a motel found high levels of Carbon Monoxide. Early this month another water heater leak in a hotel in maryland sent nine people to hospital. Last year, three people died in the same room at a North Carolina hotel almost two months apart. Fire officials traced the Carbon Monoxide to ventilation pipes for a pool heater that was placed near an air conditioning unit for their room. The gas is odorless and tasteless. You wont know its there without a detector. If its severe enough youll pass out and go in a coma and die. Reporter risk goes up when the temperature goes down. It usually starts in the basement or ground floor where heating equipment is kept. We hold a match right by the flue. Youll see the flame go up. If it starts blowing out towards you theres something wrong. Great tip there. The centers for Disease Control says every near more than 500 people died because of unintentional exposure to Carbon Monoxide. I spoke to firefighters in new york city they carry on them Carbon Monoxide detectors and tell us oftentimes they will walk in and the alarm will sound right away. It can be as simple as that. Seems simple but clearly not everyone is getting the message. Thanks so much. Got to have one in your house, you have to check the battery and they have a certain half life, they are not useful any more. You have to stay on top of it. Its not like smoke where you get a warning. It matters. Coming up on new day Something Else that matters. What do you think of this . The nfl wants to deal with these problems that have come up about their culture and use of the nword and bullying. Heres one of the suggestions that may happen. A 15 yard penalty if you use the nword or another offensive word. What do you think . Is that a good way to clean up the image . Is that a good way to change the game also ahead americas therapist, dr. Drew has a family struggle of his own. His did your is going public with her very personal battle with an eating disorder. She will join us to talk about why shes coming forward. Thats ahead. Captain obvious im in a hotel. And a hotel is the Perfect Place to talk to you about hotels. Allyoucaneat is a hotel policy that allows you to eat all that you can. The hotel gym is short for gymnasium. The hotel pool is usually filled with water. And the best dot com for booking hotels, is hotels. Com. Its on the internet, but you probably knew that. Or maybe not, i dont really know you. Bellman welcome back, captain obvious. Captain obvious yes i am. All those words are spelled correctly. Guys are already coming after me on twitter. This is no ordinary penalty. The new rule being proposed in the nfl would do this. Automatic 15 yard penalty for on field use of an offensive term or the nword, for example. Is it necessary or is it just the league going too far to clean up its image. Lets debate. Great to have both of you. Before we get to you, lets be clear what the nfl is saying. Heres their statement. Its a potential rule modification being discussed. Our game officials already have substantial authority to police verbal abuse unsportsman like conduct and understand the league as perspective on respect. Somebody tweeted me what if an official uses the term. Lets start. How do you see it. Is it good, bad, indifferent . What a lawyer would call diminimus. This is the least they could do. If the rule was just like oh, we should have regulations against offensive language there would be a debate and the debate would go what kind of offensive language. Of course the nword. Thats part of the debate. Of course the nword should facebook youre going penalize offensive language. Should you penalize it . I think so. I think the nfl is trying to deal with its pr issues. Is trying to deal with some of the things that happened in the be Jonathan Martin case. Its a Million Dollar workplace. You can say were not going to have our players engaging this activity and because nfl players know how to react to rules it will stamp it off. They dont take their helmets off any more why do they say the nword. Is it as simple as that . There should be a rule on it. It should be a message to the culture of the nfl this should to be done . Well, the power of all rules and laws is not just having it written down on paper but the ability to enforce and punishment for enforcing. Lets talk about enforcing. How will referees accurately figure out who said the n wofrd, especially in a huddle, especially when the action is going so high. We talk so much about the power of seattles fan base and how loud it gets in their stadium. How are you going to tell who is saying the nword when the sea hawk fan base is going crazy. I agree with the enforcement issue. Thats a challenging beast to contain. Let he had ask you, you think that something needs to be done. Is there a better way . Well, the problem with the nfl is that its kind of its grabbing at strauss. This issue got in the forefront not because of what happens on the field and this is what i mean. Were focused on richy incognito caught on tape using the nrn word. The nfl is predominantly africanamerican and its the africanamerican players using the word on field. How will you use that nuance. Thats a strong point. I was going to say also the issue of the Comfort Level of the referees. How comfortable would a white referee be in punishing a black player for using the nword. How comfortable will black referees. You have your color politics. This could decide a game a game thats all about intimidation and they say the ugly things all day long. They manufacture them to get an effect. The question comes down is this pc run amuck where were focused on what you say as opposed to do. We wont change culture well just change you for lip service. It is political correctness. Sometimes that means dont be a racist. I think its fine thank you. Most of the guys in the league are black. Are they racist. Its a fraught issue. They may be ignorant. Its a generational thing. Every day in Public Schools theres white teachers that have black studio audience. It seems if discretion is used and i cant see referees throwing left and right for teammates saying it. If discretion is used and one or two penalties are called it could change the culture a little bit. Doesnt it make the referees more like a hall monitor. They have a lot they have to keep their eyes on. It would have to be blatantly in their face. Which then makes me think arent there already rules on the books . Cant you say unsportsman like conduct. The thing i find interesting. So were focused in on the nword and how you are going to enforce it while at the same time the nfl continues to market the rword and has a Football Team in washington thats based on a racial slur. So, again, it seems like they are grasping for straws. You need to figure out what are you going to do with the Football Player drag his knocked out fiancee out of an elevator or other players being arrested for dui. Thats whats impacting your culture. The slurs on the field is part of it too. The thing thats damaging the culture are the things thats illegal. Imagine the first came thats affected by this call and what the outrage would be there especially what you two are saying. You have big problems to deal with it in big ways. Who know if its a step in the direction. What do you think . Tweet it newday. Coming up on new day addiction hitting close to home for dr. Drew. She writes candid articles online she has fought an eating disorder since seventh grade suffering from what she called the weight of perfection. Now for the first time shes talking nationally about her struggle and shes joining us, of course, on new day this morning. Thank you so much for coming in. Thank you for having me. It takes a lot for someone to speak out and it took a lot for you to speak out. I want to get your take on why it was important for you to speak out so publicly. This is a very thoughtful and long piece you wrote originally. You said in this one part. I had hit rock bottom four months prior and had put myself into therapy purging eight times in one day to cope with the emotional stress of being home during spring break, had finally scared me enough to take action. Obviously my father works in Mental Health and so i knew what i needed to do to take care of my semblgs and it got to the point where i didnt want to live like that any more and i put myself in therapy and ive been in therapy ever since and im two years recovered. Talking about it has been very helpful in my recovery. A lot of people have reached out and talking about it gives me clarity and im comfortable talking about it and not ashamed. Its important to talk about because its a stigmatized issue. Part of the reason, you know, people dont talk about it is because its so stigmatized. If we can talk about it it would solve a lot of the problem. With a famous name im sure you considered this was going to get a lot of attention. Did you consider that . Were you surprised . You know, i wrote this in november so when i First Published it i was nervous. Obviously i wasnt ready for it to come out yesterday. Im very open about it and very comfortable talking about it. But it was definitely a surprise so many months later for it to be published. What was the moment . Youve been battling with bulimia and anorexia since seventh grade. When was the moment after you went into therapy you decided you wanted to speak out . Only recently. This fall. I wrote the piece, a friend of mine did something happen . I was just ready to talk about it. There was a moment where i was like this is it. This is what i want to do. I want to help people with this. I dont want to suffer in silence. Your father is a good friend of our show, dr. Drew. He gave a statement saying in many different ways hes so proud of you. So proud of you in speaking out so, proud of you that you needed help and you sought therapy and been active in your therapy and proud of you that you are now using your insights to help others. But if you read this piece it definitely made me wonder how did your mother react . Because it was your relationship with her . Right. That you point to as part of the problem. Right. It was hard to write that. But i think that honesty is really important in a relationship. And through writing this we understood each other better and we had to have a conversation about it and we had to really work out our kinks. I think that writing has helped seen my perspective. So, you work with the motherdaughter relationship is complicated and, you know, ive had the privilege to be able to write about it and my mom being okay about it and support me throughout all of it. I love her regardless. Its hard. Its hard. Youre stronger because of that. Exactly. You know folks are wondering. So many people unfortunately battle eating disorders and do it alone your folks look at this and say how is it possible that even dr. Drews daughter, one of the most famous therapists in the country, how could this also happen to her . Right. What do you say to them . I think its a product of our culture. Were obsessed with fatphobic. It can happen to anybody. Were not immune. Were put on a pedestal to be this perfect family and were not. Were just people. This can happen to anybody. Even if its not an eating disorder were very, very comfortable with disorder eating and so its a product of our culture and not just my family alone. But i think thats a good point to make is that even dr. Drews daughter can have a disorder too. It can affect every family. Right. You seem perfect. How are you often the outside doesnt mirror the inside when people are struggling with things. How are you doing today . Where are you on your recovery . Its been a crazy 24 hours. Im sure. But im doing great with my recovery. Im organizing a body positive eating disorder awareness this week. Because its National Eating disorder Awareness Week coinciding. Im in a good place. Im excited. Im making some lemonade out of lemons. Best thing you can do. Everyone would agree. Thanks for your strength. Thanks for coming on and speaking so openly on a very big stage about this. Thank you very, very much. Good luck with school. Thank you. Only a junior. Much wiser than i was in my junior year. Chris, back over to you. We need it. Its a problem that affects so many families and so many people out there. Well take a break here on new day. When we come back take a look at this guy. He clearly lost a bet.
